एवमुक्तस्तया शक्रः संदिदेश सदागतिम् ।

Shakuntala said: Thus spoken to by her, Indra commanded Vayu. Then, at that time, Menaka departed with Vayu.
अथापश्यद्वरारोहा तपसा दग्धकिल्बिषम् ।
विश्वामित्रं तपस्यन्तं मेनका भीरुराश्रमे ॥२॥

Then, the beautiful-hipped Menaka, feeling fearful, saw Vishvamitra in the hermitage, who had burned away his sins through tapas and was engaged in performing more tapas.
अभिवाद्य ततः सा तं प्राक्रीडदृषिसंनिधौ ।
अपोवाह च वासोऽस्या मारुतः शशिसंनिभम् ॥३॥

Then, having greeted him, she sported in the sage's presence. And the wind god blew away her garment, which was radiant like the moon.
सागच्छत्त्वरिता भूमिं वासस्तदभिलिङ्गती ।
उत्स्मयन्तीव सव्रीडं मारुतं वरवर्णिनी ॥४॥

4. sāgacchattvaritā bhūmiṁ vāsastadabhiliṅgatī ,

Hurriedly, the beautiful woman went to the ground, clinging to her garment as it was being blown by the wind, smiling shyly as if playfully.
गृद्धां वाससि संभ्रान्तां मेनकां मुनिसत्तमः ।
अनिर्देश्यवयोरूपामपश्यद्विवृतां तदा ॥५॥

5. gṛddhāṁ vāsasi saṁbhrāntāṁ menakāṁ munisattamaḥ ,

Then, the best of sages saw Menaka, agitated and entangled in her garment, her indescribable youth and beauty exposed.
तस्या रूपगुणं दृष्ट्वा स तु विप्रर्षभस्तदा ।
चकार भावं संसर्गे तया कामवशं गतः ॥६॥

6. tasyā rūpaguṇaṁ dṛṣṭvā sa tu viprarṣabhastadā ,
cakāra bhāvaṁ saṁsarge tayā kāmavaśaṁ gataḥ.

tasyāḥ rūpaguṇam dṛṣṭvā saḥ tu viprarṣabhaḥ tadā

Having then seen her beauty and qualities, that best of sages, overcome by desire, intended to unite with her.
न्यमन्त्रयत चाप्येनां सा चाप्यैच्छदनिन्दिता ।
तौ तत्र सुचिरं कालं वने व्यहरतामुभौ ।
रममाणौ यथाकामं यथैकदिवसं तथा ॥७॥
तौ तत्र सुचिरं कालं वने व्यहरतामुभौ ।

7. nyamantrayata cāpyenāṁ sā cāpyaicchadaninditā ,
tau tatra suciraṁ kālaṁ vane vyaharatāmubhau ,
ramamāṇau yathākāmaṁ yathaikadivasaṁ tathā.

And he invited her, and the blameless one also agreed. Both of them dallied there in the forest for a very long time, delighting as they wished, as if it were only a single day.
जनयामास स मुनिर्मेनकायां शकुन्तलाम् ।
प्रस्थे हिमवतो रम्ये मालिनीमभितो नदीम् ॥८॥

8. janayāmāsa sa munirmenakāyāṁ śakuntalām ,

That sage begot Shakuntala in Menaka, on the beautiful plateau of the Himalayas, near the Malini river.
जातमुत्सृज्य तं गर्भं मेनका मालिनीमनु ।
कृतकार्या ततस्तूर्णमगच्छच्छक्रसंसदम् ॥९॥

9. jātamutsṛjya taṁ garbhaṁ menakā mālinīmanu ,
kṛtakāryā tatastūrṇamagacchacchakrasaṁsadam.

Menaka, having abandoned that newborn child near the Malini River, and having accomplished her task, then quickly went to Indra's assembly.
तं वने विजने गर्भं सिंहव्याघ्रसमाकुले ।
दृष्ट्वा शयानं शकुनाः समन्तात्पर्यवारयन् ॥१०॥

10. taṁ vane vijane garbhaṁ siṁhavyāghrasamākule ,

Having seen that child lying in the desolate forest, which was full of lions and tigers, birds surrounded it from all sides.
नेमां हिंस्युर्वने बालां क्रव्यादा मांसगृद्धिनः ।
पर्यरक्षन्त तां तत्र शकुन्ता मेनकात्मजाम् ॥११॥

11. nemāṁ hiṁsyurvane bālāṁ kravyādā māṁsagṛddhinaḥ ,
paryarakṣanta tāṁ tatra śakuntā menakātmajām.

Lest the carnivorous, flesh-greedy animals in the forest harm this child, the birds there protected Menaka's daughter.
उपस्प्रष्टुं गतश्चाहमपश्यं शयितामिमाम् ।
निर्जने विपिनेऽरण्ये शकुन्तैः परिवारिताम् ।
आनयित्वा ततश्चैनां दुहितृत्वे न्ययोजयम् ॥१२॥
निर्जने विपिनेऽरण्ये शकुन्तैः परिवारिताम् ।

12. upaspraṣṭuṁ gataścāhamapaśyaṁ śayitāmimām ,

ānayitvā tataścaināṁ duhitṛtve nyayojayam.

And I, having gone to bathe, saw this (child) lying in the desolate, dense forest, surrounded by birds. Then, having brought her, I appointed her to the status of a daughter.
शरीरकृत्प्राणदाता यस्य चान्नानि भुञ्जते ।
क्रमेण ते त्रयोऽप्युक्ताः पितरो धर्मनिश्चये ॥१३॥

13. śarīrakṛtprāṇadātā yasya cānnāni bhuñjate ,
krameṇa te trayo'pyuktāḥ pitaro dharmaniścaye.

The one who creates the body, the one who gives life, and the one whose food is consumed - these three are successively declared to be fathers in the determination of dharma.
निर्जने च वने यस्माच्छकुन्तैः परिरक्षिता ।
शकुन्तलेति नामास्याः कृतं चापि ततो मया ॥१४॥

14. nirjane ca vane yasmācchakuntaiḥ parirakṣitā ,
śakuntaleti nāmāsyāḥ kṛtaṁ cāpi tato mayā.

Because she was protected by birds in a desolate forest, I therefore named her Shakuntala.
एवं दुहितरं विद्धि मम सौम्य शकुन्तलाम् ।
शकुन्तला च पितरं मन्यते मामनिन्दिता ॥१५॥

O gentle one, know this Shakuntala as my daughter. And the blameless Shakuntala considers me her father.
एतदाचष्ट पृष्टः सन्मम जन्म महर्षये ।
सुतां कण्वस्य मामेवं विद्धि त्वं मनुजाधिप ॥१६॥

16. etadācaṣṭa pṛṣṭaḥ sanmama janma maharṣaye ,
sutāṁ kaṇvasya māmevaṁ viddhi tvaṁ manujādhipa.

etat ācaṣṭa pṛṣṭaḥ san mama janma maharṣaye

When asked, he recounted my birth to the great sage. O ruler of men, know me thus as the daughter of Kanva.
कण्वं हि पितरं मन्ये पितरं स्वमजानती ।
इति ते कथितं राजन्यथावृत्तं श्रुतं मया ॥१७॥

17. kaṇvaṁ hi pitaraṁ manye pitaraṁ svamajānatī ,

Indeed, I consider Kanva my father, as I do not know my own father. O king, this is what happened, recounted to you as I heard it.
