आमन्त्रये त्वा नरदेवदेव गच्छाम्यहं पाण्डव स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु ।
कच्चिन्न वाचा वृजिनं हि किंचिदुच्चारितं मे मनसोऽभिषङ्गात् ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
āmantraye tvā naradevadeva; gacchāmyahaṁ pāṇḍava svasti te'stu ,
kaccinna vācā vṛjinaṁ hi kiṁci;duccāritaṁ me manaso'bhiṣaṅgāt.

te astu kaccit na vācā vṛjinam hi
kiṃcit uccāritam me manasaḥ abhiṣaṅgāt
1. Sañjaya said: O lord of kings (naradevadeva), I bid you farewell (āmantraye). I am departing, O Pāṇḍava. May there be well-being (svasti) for you. I hope indeed no wrong (vṛjinam) was spoken by me through my words (vācā) due to any emotional bias (manaso'bhiṣaṅgāt).
जनार्दनं भीमसेनार्जुनौ च माद्रीसुतौ सात्यकिं चेकितानम् ।
आमन्त्र्य गच्छामि शिवं सुखं वः सौम्येन मां पश्यत चक्षुषा नृपाः ॥२॥
2. janārdanaṁ bhīmasenārjunau ca; mādrīsutau sātyakiṁ cekitānam ,
āmantrya gacchāmi śivaṁ sukhaṁ vaḥ; saumyena māṁ paśyata cakṣuṣā nṛpāḥ.

gacchāmi śivam sukham vaḥ
saumyena mām paśyata cakṣuṣā nṛpāḥ
2. Bidding farewell (āmantrya) to Janārdana, Bhīmasena and Arjuna, the two sons of Mādrī (mādrīsutau), Sātyaki, and Cekitāna, I depart. May there be well-being (śivam) and happiness (sukham) for you all. O kings (nṛpāḥ), look upon me with a gentle (saumyena) eye (cakṣuṣā).
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
अनुज्ञातः संजय स्वस्ति गच्छ न नोऽकार्षीरप्रियं जातु किंचित् ।
विद्मश्च त्वा ते च वयं च सर्वे शुद्धात्मानं मध्यगतं सभास्थम् ॥३॥
3. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
anujñātaḥ saṁjaya svasti gaccha; na no'kārṣīrapriyaṁ jātu kiṁcit ,
vidmaśca tvā te ca vayaṁ ca sarve; śuddhātmānaṁ madhyagataṁ sabhāstham.
3. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca anujñātaḥ sañjaya
svasti gaccha na naḥ akārṣīḥ apriyam jātu
kiñcit vidmaḥ ca tvā te ca vayam ca
sarve śuddhātmānam madhyagatam sabhāstham
3. Yudhishthira said: Sanjaya, you have our permission; depart safely. You have never done anything unwelcome to us. Both we and everyone else here know you to be pure of heart (ātman), impartial, and a steady presence in this assembly.
आप्तो दूतः संजय सुप्रियोऽसि कल्याणवाक्शीलवान्दृष्टिमांश्च ।
न मुह्येस्त्वं संजय जातु मत्या न च क्रुध्येरुच्यमानोऽपि तथ्यम् ॥४॥
4. āpto dūtaḥ saṁjaya supriyo'si; kalyāṇavākśīlavāndṛṣṭimāṁśca ,
na muhyestvaṁ saṁjaya jātu matyā; na ca krudhyerucyamāno'pi tathyam.
4. āptaḥ dūtaḥ sañjaya supriyaḥ asi
kalyāṇavāk śīlavān dṛṣṭimān ca na
muhyeḥ tvam sañjaya jātu matyā na
ca krudhyeḥ ucyamānaḥ api tathyām
4. Sanjaya, you are a reliable messenger, very dear to us, eloquent with auspicious speech, of good character, and insightful. O Sanjaya, your intellect (mati) is never deluded, and you do not become angry even when truth is spoken to you.
न मर्मगां जातु वक्तासि रूक्षां नोपस्तुतिं कटुकां नोत शुक्ताम् ।
धर्मारामामर्थवतीमहिंस्रामेतां वाचं तव जानामि सूत ॥५॥
5. na marmagāṁ jātu vaktāsi rūkṣāṁ; nopastutiṁ kaṭukāṁ nota śuktām ,
dharmārāmāmarthavatīmahiṁsrā;metāṁ vācaṁ tava jānāmi sūta.
5. na marmagām jātu vaktā asi rūkṣām
na upastutim kaṭukām na uta
śuktām dharmārāmām arthavatīm ahiṃsrām
etām vācam tava jānāmi sūta
5. O charioteer (sūta), you never utter harsh words that wound deeply, nor bitter praise, nor indeed any dry or insipid remarks. I know your speech to be committed to righteousness (dharma), meaningful, and non-violent.
त्वमेव नः प्रियतमोऽसि दूत इहागच्छेद्विदुरो वा द्वितीयः ।
अभीक्ष्णदृष्टोऽसि पुरा हि नस्त्वं धनंजयस्यात्मसमः सखासि ॥६॥
6. tvameva naḥ priyatamo'si dūta; ihāgacchedviduro vā dvitīyaḥ ,
abhīkṣṇadṛṣṭo'si purā hi nastvaṁ; dhanaṁjayasyātmasamaḥ sakhāsi.
6. tvam eva naḥ priyatamaḥ asi dūtaḥ
iha āgacchet viduraḥ vā dvitīyaḥ
abhīkṣṇadṛṣṭaḥ asi purā hi naḥ tvam
dhanañjayasya ātmasamaḥ sakhā asi
6. You are our dearest messenger; only Vidura could be a second to you in coming here. Indeed, you have been seen by us frequently before, and you are a friend equal to Dhananjaya (Arjuna) himself.
इतो गत्वा संजय क्षिप्रमेव उपातिष्ठेथा ब्राह्मणान्ये तदर्हाः ।
विशुद्धवीर्यांश्चरणोपपन्नान्कुले जातान्सर्वधर्मोपपन्नान् ॥७॥
7. ito gatvā saṁjaya kṣiprameva; upātiṣṭhethā brāhmaṇānye tadarhāḥ ,
viśuddhavīryāṁścaraṇopapannā;nkule jātānsarvadharmopapannān.
7. itaḥ gatvā sañjaya kṣipram eva
upātiṣṭhethāḥ brāhmaṇān ye tadarhāḥ
viśuddhavīryān ca caraṇopapannān
kule jātān sarvadharmopapannān
7. O Sañjaya, go from here quickly and approach those worthy Brahmins who are of pure strength, endowed with proper conduct, born in good families, and possessing all (dharma) virtues.
स्वाध्यायिनो ब्राह्मणा भिक्षवश्च तपस्विनो ये च नित्या वनेषु ।
अभिवाद्या वै मद्वचनेन वृद्धास्तथेतरेषां कुशलं वदेथाः ॥८॥
8. svādhyāyino brāhmaṇā bhikṣavaśca; tapasvino ye ca nityā vaneṣu ,
abhivādyā vai madvacanena vṛddhā;stathetareṣāṁ kuśalaṁ vadethāḥ.
8. svādhyāyinaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ bhikṣavaḥ
ca tapasvinaḥ ye ca nityāḥ vaneṣu
abhivādyāḥ vai madvacanena vṛddhāḥ
tathā itareṣām kuśalam vadethāḥ
8. You should greet, on my behalf, the Vedic scholars (svādhyāyin), the Brahmins, the mendicants, and also the ascetics who always dwell in the forests. Furthermore, you should greet the elders, and likewise, you should inquire about the welfare of the others.
पुरोहितं धृतराष्ट्रस्य राज्ञ आचार्याश्च ऋत्विजो ये च तस्य ।
तैश्च त्वं तात सहितैर्यथार्हं संगच्छेथाः कुशलेनैव सूत ॥९॥
9. purohitaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya rājña; ācāryāśca ṛtvijo ye ca tasya ,
taiśca tvaṁ tāta sahitairyathārhaṁ; saṁgacchethāḥ kuśalenaiva sūta.
9. purohitam dhṛtarāṣṭrasya rājñaḥ
ācāryāḥ ca ṛtvijaḥ ye ca tasya
taiḥ ca tvam tāta sahitaiḥ yathārham
saṅgacchethāḥ kuśalena eva sūta
9. And with them—the priest of King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, his teachers, and his ritual priests—you, my dear one, O Sūta, should appropriately meet, indeed inquiring about their well-being.
आचार्य इष्टोऽनपगो विधेयो वेदानीप्सन्ब्रह्मचर्यं चचार ।
योऽस्त्रं चतुष्पात्पुनरेव चक्रे द्रोणः प्रसन्नोऽभिवाद्यो यथार्हम् ॥१०॥
10. ācārya iṣṭo'napago vidheyo; vedānīpsanbrahmacaryaṁ cacāra ,
yo'straṁ catuṣpātpunareva cakre; droṇaḥ prasanno'bhivādyo yathārham.
10. ācāryaḥ iṣṭaḥ anapagaḥ vidheyaḥ
vedān īpsan brahmacaryam cacāra yaḥ
astram catuṣpāt punaḥ eva cakre
droṇaḥ prasannaḥ abhivādyaḥ yathārham
10. Droṇa, the beloved, steadfast, and compliant teacher, who practiced (brahmacarya) celibacy to obtain knowledge of the Vedas, and who indeed once again established the complete science of arms (astra), that gracious Droṇa should be greeted respectfully.
अधीतविद्यश्चरणोपपन्नो योऽस्त्रं चतुष्पात्पुनरेव चक्रे ।
गन्धर्वपुत्रप्रतिमं तरस्विनं तमश्वत्थामानं कुशलं स्म पृच्छेः ॥११॥
11. adhītavidyaścaraṇopapanno; yo'straṁ catuṣpātpunareva cakre ,
gandharvaputrapratimaṁ tarasvinaṁ; tamaśvatthāmānaṁ kuśalaṁ sma pṛccheḥ.
11. adhītavidyaḥ caraṇopapannaḥ yaḥ
astram catuṣpāt punaḥ eva cakre
gandharvaputrapratimam tarasvinam
tam aśvatthāmānam kuśalam sma pṛccheḥ
11. You should inquire about the well-being of that mighty Ashvatthaman, who resembles a son of a Gandharva, and who, having mastered knowledge and being endowed with good conduct, skillfully (or completely) recreated the divine weapon.
शारद्वतस्यावसथं स्म गत्वा महारथस्यास्त्रविदां वरस्य ।
त्वं मामभीक्ष्णं परिकीर्तयन्वै कृपस्य पादौ संजय पाणिना स्पृशेः ॥१२॥
12. śāradvatasyāvasathaṁ sma gatvā; mahārathasyāstravidāṁ varasya ,
tvaṁ māmabhīkṣṇaṁ parikīrtayanvai; kṛpasya pādau saṁjaya pāṇinā spṛśeḥ.
12. śāradvatasya āvasatham sma gatvā
mahārathasya astravidām varasya tvam
mām abhīkṣṇam parikīrtayan vai
kṛpasya pādau saṃjaya pāṇinā spṛśeḥ
12. Sanjaya, after going to the dwelling of Sharadvata (Kripa), the great chariot-warrior and best among those who know divine weapons, you should repeatedly mention me and touch Kripa's feet with your hand.
यस्मिञ्शौर्यमानृशंस्यं तपश्च प्रज्ञा शीलं श्रुतिसत्त्वे धृतिश्च ।
पादौ गृहीत्वा कुरुसत्तमस्य भीष्मस्य मां तत्र निवेदयेथाः ॥१३॥
13. yasmiñśauryamānṛśaṁsyaṁ tapaśca; prajñā śīlaṁ śrutisattve dhṛtiśca ,
pādau gṛhītvā kurusattamasya; bhīṣmasya māṁ tatra nivedayethāḥ.
13. yasmin śauryam ānṛśaṃsyam tapaḥ
ca prajñā śīlam śrutisattve dhṛtiḥ
ca pādau gṛhītvā kurusattamasya
bhīṣmasya mām tatra nivedayethāḥ
13. You should inform Bhishma, the best of the Kurus – in whom reside valor, humanity, asceticism (tapas), wisdom, excellent character, sacred knowledge, courage, and steadfastness – about me, after grasping his feet.
प्रज्ञाचक्षुर्यः प्रणेता कुरूणां बहुश्रुतो वृद्धसेवी मनीषी ।
तस्मै राज्ञे स्थविरायाभिवाद्य आचक्षीथाः संजय मामरोगम् ॥१४॥
14. prajñācakṣuryaḥ praṇetā kurūṇāṁ; bahuśruto vṛddhasevī manīṣī ,
tasmai rājñe sthavirāyābhivādya; ācakṣīthāḥ saṁjaya māmarogam.
14. prajñācakṣuḥ yaḥ praṇetā kurūṇām
bahuśrutaḥ vṛddhasevī manīṣī
tasmai rājñe sthavirāya abhivādya
ācakṣīthāḥ saṃjaya mām arogam
14. Sanjaya, after saluting that aged king – who is wise (prajñā-cakṣu), the leader of the Kurus, very learned, respectful of elders, and sagacious – you should inform him that I am well.
ज्येष्ठः पुत्रो धृतराष्ट्रस्य मन्दो मूर्खः शठः संजय पापशीलः ।
प्रशास्ता वै पृथिवी येन सर्वा सुयोधनं कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥१५॥
15. jyeṣṭhaḥ putro dhṛtarāṣṭrasya mando; mūrkhaḥ śaṭhaḥ saṁjaya pāpaśīlaḥ ,
praśāstā vai pṛthivī yena sarvā; suyodhanaṁ kuśalaṁ tāta pṛccheḥ.
15. jyeṣṭhaḥ putraḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya
mandaḥ mūrkhaḥ śaṭhaḥ saṃjaya pāpaśīlaḥ
praśāstā vai pṛthivī yena
sarvā suyodhanaṃ kuśalaṃ tāta pṛccheḥ
15. O Sanjaya, Dhritarashtra's eldest son is dull-witted, foolish, deceitful, and sinful by nature. He is indeed the one by whom all the earth is ruled. O dear one, you should inquire about Suyodhana's well-being.
भ्राता कनीयानपि तस्य मन्दस्तथाशीलः संजय सोऽपि शश्वत् ।
महेष्वासः शूरतमः कुरूणां दुःशासनं कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥१६॥
16. bhrātā kanīyānapi tasya manda;stathāśīlaḥ saṁjaya so'pi śaśvat ,
maheṣvāsaḥ śūratamaḥ kurūṇāṁ; duḥśāsanaṁ kuśalaṁ tāta pṛccheḥ.
16. bhrātā kanīyān api tasya mandaḥ
tathāśīlaḥ saṃjaya saḥ api śaśvat
maheṣvāsaḥ śūratamaḥ kurūṇāṃ
duḥśāsanaṃ kuśalaṃ tāta pṛccheḥ
16. O Sanjaya, his younger brother is also dull-witted and of a similar nature, always remaining so. He is a great archer and the bravest among the Kurus. O dear one, you should inquire about Duhshasana's well-being.
वृन्दारकं कविमर्थेष्वमूढं महाप्रज्ञं सर्वधर्मोपपन्नम् ।
न तस्य युद्धं रोचते वै कदाचिद्वैश्यापुत्रं कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥१७॥
17. vṛndārakaṁ kavimartheṣvamūḍhaṁ; mahāprajñaṁ sarvadharmopapannam ,
na tasya yuddhaṁ rocate vai kadāci;dvaiśyāputraṁ kuśalaṁ tāta pṛccheḥ.
17. vṛndārakaṃ kavim artheṣu amūḍhaṃ
mahāprajñaṃ sarvadhamopapannam na
tasya yuddhaṃ rocate vai kadācit
vaiśyāputraṃ kuśalaṃ tāta pṛccheḥ
17. O dear one, you should inquire about the well-being of the son of the Vaishya woman (Vidura), who is Vrindaraka, the poet, unbewildered in matters of purpose, profoundly wise, and endowed with all aspects of natural law (dharma). Indeed, war never pleases him.
निकर्तने देवने योऽद्वितीयश्छन्नोपधः साधुदेवी मताक्षः ।
यो दुर्जयो देवितव्येन संख्ये स चित्रसेनः कुशलं तात वाच्यः ॥१८॥
18. nikartane devane yo'dvitīya;śchannopadhaḥ sādhudevī matākṣaḥ ,
yo durjayo devitavyena saṁkhye; sa citrasenaḥ kuśalaṁ tāta vācyaḥ.
18. nikartane devane yaḥ advitīyaḥ
channopadhaḥ sādhudevī matākṣaḥ
yaḥ durjayaḥ devitavyena saṃkhye
saḥ citrasenaḥ kuśalaṃ tāta vācyaḥ
18. O dear one, you should report about the well-being of Chitrasena, who is unrivalled in cheating and gambling. He is one with hidden trickery, a skilled gambler, and proficient with dice. He is difficult to defeat in any contest through gambling.
यस्य कामो वर्तते नित्यमेव नान्यः शमाद्भारतानामिति स्म ।
स बाह्लिकानामृषभो मनस्वी पुरा यथा माभिवदेत्प्रसन्नः ॥१९॥
19. yasya kāmo vartate nityameva; nānyaḥ śamādbhāratānāmiti sma ,
sa bāhlikānāmṛṣabho manasvī; purā yathā mābhivadetprasannaḥ.
19. yasya kāmaḥ vartate nityam eva na
anyaḥ śamāt bhāratānām iti sma
saḥ bāhlikānām ṛṣabhaḥ manasvī
purā yathā mā abhivadet prasannaḥ
19. It is said that his constant desire is nothing but peace (śama) among the Bhāratas. May that intelligent lord (ṛṣabha) of the Bāhlikas speak to me with delight, as he did before.
गुणैरनेकैः प्रवरैश्च युक्तो विज्ञानवान्नैव च निष्ठुरो यः ।
स्नेहादमर्षं सहते सदैव स सोमदत्तः पूजनीयो मतो मे ॥२०॥
20. guṇairanekaiḥ pravaraiśca yukto; vijñānavānnaiva ca niṣṭhuro yaḥ ,
snehādamarṣaṁ sahate sadaiva; sa somadattaḥ pūjanīyo mato me.
20. guṇaiḥ anekaiḥ pravaraiḥ ca yuktaḥ
vijñānavān na eva ca niṣṭhuraḥ
yaḥ snehāt amarṣam sahate sadā eva
saḥ somadattaḥ pūjanīyaḥ mataḥ me
20. He who is endowed with many excellent qualities, is knowledgeable, and never cruel, and who always tolerates anger out of affection—that Somadatta, in my opinion, is worthy of reverence.
अर्हत्तमः कुरुषु सौमदत्तिः स नो भ्राता संजय मत्सखा च ।
महेष्वासो रथिनामुत्तमो यः सहामात्यः कुशलं तस्य पृच्छेः ॥२१॥
21. arhattamaḥ kuruṣu saumadattiḥ; sa no bhrātā saṁjaya matsakhā ca ,
maheṣvāso rathināmuttamo yaḥ; sahāmātyaḥ kuśalaṁ tasya pṛccheḥ.
21. arhattamaḥ kuruṣu saumadattiḥ saḥ
naḥ bhrātā saṃjaya mat sakhā ca
mahā-iṣvāsaḥ rathinām uttamaḥ yaḥ
saha-āmātyaḥ kuśalam tasya pṛccheḥ
21. Sañjaya, Somadatta's son (Bhūriśravas), who is the most worthy among the Kurus, is our brother and my friend. He is a great archer and the best of charioteers, accompanied by his ministers; you should inquire about his well-being.
ये चैवान्ये कुरुमुख्या युवानः पुत्राः पौत्रा भ्रातरश्चैव ये नः ।
यं यमेषां येन येनाभिगच्छेरनामयं मद्वचनेन वाच्यः ॥२२॥
22. ye caivānye kurumukhyā yuvānaḥ; putrāḥ pautrā bhrātaraścaiva ye naḥ ,
yaṁ yameṣāṁ yena yenābhigacche;ranāmayaṁ madvacanena vācyaḥ.
22. ye ca eva anye kuru-mukhyāḥ yuvānaḥ
putrāḥ pautrāḥ bhrātaraḥ ca eva
ye naḥ yam yam eṣām yena yena
abhigaccheḥ anāmayam mat vacanena vācyaḥ
22. And for all those other prominent Kuru youths among our kin—our sons, grandsons, and brothers—to whichever of them you approach, by whatever means, you should convey my words of well-being.
ये राजानः पाण्डवायोधनाय समानीता धार्तराष्ट्रेण केचित् ।
वसातयः शाल्वकाः केकयाश्च तथाम्बष्ठा ये त्रिगर्ताश्च मुख्याः ॥२३॥
23. ye rājānaḥ pāṇḍavāyodhanāya; samānītā dhārtarāṣṭreṇa kecit ,
vasātayaḥ śālvakāḥ kekayāśca; tathāmbaṣṭhā ye trigartāśca mukhyāḥ.
23. ye rājānaḥ pāṇḍavāyodhanāya
samānītāḥ dhārtarāṣṭreṇa kecit vasātayaḥ
śālvakāḥ kekayāḥ ca tathā
ambaṣṭhāḥ ye trigartāḥ ca mukhyāḥ
23. Those kings whom Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son (Duryodhana) assembled for the battle against the Pāṇḍavas include some Vasātis, Śālvas, and Kekayas, as well as the prominent Ambaṣṭhas and Trigartas.
प्राच्योदीच्या दाक्षिणात्याश्च शूरास्तथा प्रतीच्याः पार्वतीयाश्च सर्वे ।
अनृशंसाः शीलवृत्तोपपन्नास्तेषां सर्वेषां कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥२४॥
24. prācyodīcyā dākṣiṇātyāśca śūrā;stathā pratīcyāḥ pārvatīyāśca sarve ,
anṛśaṁsāḥ śīlavṛttopapannā;steṣāṁ sarveṣāṁ kuśalaṁ tāta pṛccheḥ.
24. prācyodīcyāḥ dākṣiṇātyāḥ ca śūrāḥ
tathā pratīcyāḥ pārvatīyāḥ ca
sarve anṛśaṃsāḥ śīlavṛttopapannāḥ
teṣām sarveṣām kuśalam tāta pṛccheḥ
24. My dear (son), you should inquire about the well-being of all those brave warriors from the east, north, and south, as well as those from the west and the mountain regions, who are benevolent and endowed with good character and conduct.
हस्त्यारोहा रथिनः सादिनश्च पदातयश्चार्यसंघा महान्तः ।
आख्याय मां कुशलिनं स्म तेषामनामयं परिपृच्छेः समग्रान् ॥२५॥
25. hastyārohā rathinaḥ sādinaśca; padātayaścāryasaṁghā mahāntaḥ ,
ākhyāya māṁ kuśalinaṁ sma teṣā;manāmayaṁ paripṛccheḥ samagrān.
25. hastyārohāḥ rathinaḥ sādinaḥ ca
padātayaḥ ca aryasaṅghāḥ mahāntaḥ
ākhyāya mām kuśalinam sma
teṣām anāmayam paripṛccheḥ samagrān
25. Having informed them that I am well, you should thoroughly inquire about the well-being of all those great elephant riders, chariot warriors, cavalrymen, and foot soldiers, who form noble assemblies.
तथा राज्ञो ह्यर्थयुक्तानमात्यान्दौवारिकान्ये च सेनां नयन्ति ।
आयव्ययं ये गणयन्ति युक्ता अर्थांश्च ये महतश्चिन्तयन्ति ॥२६॥
26. tathā rājño hyarthayuktānamātyā;ndauvārikānye ca senāṁ nayanti ,
āyavyayaṁ ye gaṇayanti yuktā; arthāṁśca ye mahataścintayanti.
26. tathā rājñaḥ ha arthayuktān amātyān
dauvārikān ye ca senām nayanti
āyavyayam ye gaṇayanti yuktāḥ
arthān ca ye mahataḥ cintayanti
26. Similarly, (you should inquire about) the king's astute ministers, the gatekeepers, and those who lead the army; and those who diligently calculate income and expenditure, as well as those who consider important affairs.
गान्धारराजः शकुनिः पार्वतीयो निकर्तने योऽद्वितीयोऽक्षदेवी ।
मानं कुर्वन्धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सूत मिथ्याबुद्धेः कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥२७॥
27. gāndhārarājaḥ śakuniḥ pārvatīyo; nikartane yo'dvitīyo'kṣadevī ,
mānaṁ kurvandhārtarāṣṭrasya sūta; mithyābuddheḥ kuśalaṁ tāta pṛccheḥ.

mānaṃ kurvan dhārtarāṣṭrasya sūta

27. O charioteer, you should inquire about the well-being of Shakuni, the king of Gandhara, who hails from the mountains, who is unrivaled in deception and dice-playing, and who, with his foolish intellect, shows deference to Dhritarashtra's son (Duryodhana).
यः पाण्डवानेकरथेन वीरः समुत्सहत्यप्रधृष्यान्विजेतुम् ।
यो मुह्यतां मोहयिताद्वितीयो वैकर्तनं कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥२८॥
28. yaḥ pāṇḍavānekarathena vīraḥ; samutsahatyapradhṛṣyānvijetum ,
yo muhyatāṁ mohayitādvitīyo; vaikartanaṁ kuśalaṁ tāta pṛccheḥ.

yaḥ muhyatām mohayitā advitīyaḥ
vaikartanaṃ kuśalaṃ tāta pṛccheḥ
28. O dear one, you should inquire about the well-being of Vaikartana (Karṇa), that hero who attempts to conquer the invincible Pāṇḍavas with a single chariot, and who is an unrivaled bewilderer of the bewildered.
स एव भक्तः स गुरुः स भृत्यः स वै पिता स च माता सुहृच्च ।
अगाधबुद्धिर्विदुरो दीर्घदर्शी स नो मन्त्री कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥२९॥
29. sa eva bhaktaḥ sa guruḥ sa bhṛtyaḥ; sa vai pitā sa ca mātā suhṛcca ,
agādhabuddhirviduro dīrghadarśī; sa no mantrī kuśalaṁ tāta pṛccheḥ.
29. sa eva bhaktaḥ sa guruḥ sa bhṛtyaḥ
sa vai pitā sa ca mātā suhṛt ca
agādhabuddhiḥ viduraḥ dīrghadarśī
sa naḥ mantrī kuśalaṃ tāta pṛccheḥ
29. O dear one, you should inquire about the well-being of Vidura, our minister, who possesses profound intellect and is far-sighted. He is truly a loyal one, a teacher (guru), a servant, indeed a father, a mother, and a friend.
वृद्धाः स्त्रियो याश्च गुणोपपन्ना या ज्ञायन्ते संजय मातरस्ताः ।
ताभिः सर्वाभिः सहिताभिः समेत्य स्त्रीभिर्वृद्धाभिरभिवादं वदेथाः ॥३०॥
30. vṛddhāḥ striyo yāśca guṇopapannā; yā jñāyante saṁjaya mātarastāḥ ,
tābhiḥ sarvābhiḥ sahitābhiḥ sametya; strībhirvṛddhābhirabhivādaṁ vadethāḥ.
30. vṛddhāḥ striyaḥ yāḥ ca guṇopapannāḥ
yāḥ jñāyante sañjaya mātaraḥ tāḥ
tābhiḥ sarvābhiḥ sahitābhiḥ sametya
strībhiḥ vṛddhābhiḥ abhivādaṃ vadethāḥ
30. O Sañjaya, you should go and, after meeting with all of those elderly women who are virtuous and are considered mothers, offer your respectful greetings.
कच्चित्पुत्रा जीवपुत्राः सुसम्यग्वर्तन्ते वो वृत्तिमनृशंसरूपाम् ।
इति स्मोक्त्वा संजय ब्रूहि पश्चादजातशत्रुः कुशली सपुत्रः ॥३१॥
31. kaccitputrā jīvaputrāḥ susamya;gvartante vo vṛttimanṛśaṁsarūpām ,
iti smoktvā saṁjaya brūhi paścā;dajātaśatruḥ kuśalī saputraḥ.

vartante vaḥ vṛttim anṛśaṃsarūpām
| iti sma uktvā saṃjaya brūhi
paścāt ajātaśatruḥ kuśalī saputraḥ
31. Sanjaya, first, please inquire if our sons, those with living children, are conducting themselves very properly in a livelihood (vṛtti) that is characterized by non-cruelty. Afterwards, tell me if Ajatashatru (Yudhishthira) is well, along with his sons.
या नो भार्याः संजय वेत्थ तत्र तासां सर्वासां कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ।
सुसंगुप्ताः सुरभयोऽनवद्याः कच्चिद्गृहानावसथाप्रमत्ताः ॥३२॥
32. yā no bhāryāḥ saṁjaya vettha tatra; tāsāṁ sarvāsāṁ kuśalaṁ tāta pṛccheḥ ,
susaṁguptāḥ surabhayo'navadyāḥ; kaccidgṛhānāvasathāpramattāḥ.
32. yāḥ naḥ bhāryāḥ saṃjaya vettha tatra
tāsām sarvāsām kuśalam tāta pṛccheḥ
| susaṃguptāḥ surabhayaḥ anavadyāḥ
kaccit gṛhān āvasatha apramattāḥ
32. Sanjaya, my dear, concerning those wives of ours whom you know, please inquire about the well-being of all of them. I hope that, being well-protected, virtuous, and blameless, they are dwelling in their homes attentively.
कच्चिद्वृत्तिं श्वशुरेषु भद्राः कल्याणीं वर्तध्वमनृशंसरूपाम् ।
यथा च वः स्युः पतयोऽनुकूलास्तथा वृत्तिमात्मनः स्थापयध्वम् ॥३३॥
33. kaccidvṛttiṁ śvaśureṣu bhadrāḥ; kalyāṇīṁ vartadhvamanṛśaṁsarūpām ,
yathā ca vaḥ syuḥ patayo'nukūlā;stathā vṛttimātmanaḥ sthāpayadhvam.
33. kaccit vṛttim śvaśureṣu bhadrāḥ
kalyāṇīm vartadhvam anṛśaṃsarūpām |
yathā ca vaḥ syuḥ patayaḥ anukūlāḥ
tathā vṛttim ātmanaḥ sthāpayadhvam
33. O auspicious ladies, I hope you are conducting yourselves in a blessed and non-cruel manner towards your fathers-in-law. Also, establish your own conduct (vṛtti) in such a way that your husbands may remain favorable to you.
या नः स्नुषाः संजय वेत्थ तत्र प्राप्ताः कुलेभ्यश्च गुणोपपन्नाः ।
प्रजावत्यो ब्रूहि समेत्य ताश्च युधिष्ठिरो वोऽभ्यवदत्प्रसन्नः ॥३४॥
34. yā naḥ snuṣāḥ saṁjaya vettha tatra; prāptāḥ kulebhyaśca guṇopapannāḥ ,
prajāvatyo brūhi sametya tāśca; yudhiṣṭhiro vo'bhyavadatprasannaḥ.

prāptāḥ kulebhyaḥ ca guṇopapannāḥ

yudhiṣṭhiraḥ vaḥ abhyavadat prasannaḥ
34. Sanjaya, regarding those daughters-in-law of ours whom you know—those who have come from noble families, are endowed with good qualities, and have children—go and meet them. Tell them that Yudhishthira (Ajātaśatru) has addressed them, being pleased.
कन्याः स्वजेथाः सदनेषु संजय अनामयं मद्वचनेन पृष्ट्वा ।
कल्याणा वः सन्तु पतयोऽनुकूला यूयं पतीनां भवतानुकूलाः ॥३५॥
35. kanyāḥ svajethāḥ sadaneṣu saṁjaya; anāmayaṁ madvacanena pṛṣṭvā ,
kalyāṇā vaḥ santu patayo'nukūlā; yūyaṁ patīnāṁ bhavatānukūlāḥ.
35. kanyāḥ svajethāḥ sadaneṣu saṃjaya
anāmayam madvacanena pṛṣṭvā
kalyāṇāḥ vaḥ santu patayaḥ anukūlāḥ
yūyam patīnām bhavata anukūlāḥ
35. Sañjaya, you should affectionately greet the girls in their homes after inquiring about their well-being on my behalf. May your husbands be favorable to you all, and may you all be favorable to your husbands.
अलंकृता वस्त्रवत्यः सुगन्धा अबीभत्साः सुखिता भोगवत्यः ।
लघु यासां दर्शनं वाक्च लघ्वी वेशस्त्रियः कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥३६॥
36. alaṁkṛtā vastravatyaḥ sugandhā; abībhatsāḥ sukhitā bhogavatyaḥ ,
laghu yāsāṁ darśanaṁ vākca laghvī; veśastriyaḥ kuśalaṁ tāta pṛccheḥ.
36. alaṃkṛtāḥ vastravatyaḥ sugandhāḥ
abībhatsāḥ sukhitāḥ bhogavatyaḥ |
laghu yāsāṃ darśanaṃ vāk ca laghvī
veśastriyaḥ kuśalaṃ tāta pṛccheḥ
36. O dear one, you should inquire about the welfare of the courtesans who are adorned, well-dressed, fragrant, appealing, happy, and enjoying pleasures, whose appearance is accessible and whose speech is light.
दासीपुत्रा ये च दासाः कुरूणां तदाश्रया बहवः कुब्जखञ्जाः ।
आख्याय मां कुशलिनं स्म तेभ्यो अनामयं परिपृच्छेर्जघन्यम् ॥३७॥
37. dāsīputrā ye ca dāsāḥ kurūṇāṁ; tadāśrayā bahavaḥ kubjakhañjāḥ ,
ākhyāya māṁ kuśalinaṁ sma tebhyo; anāmayaṁ paripṛccherjaghanyam.
37. dāsīputrāḥ ye ca dāsāḥ kurūṇām
tadāśrayāḥ bahavaḥ kubjakhañjāḥ |
ākhyāya māṃ kuśalinaṃ sma tebhyaḥ
anāmayam paripṛccheḥ jaghanyam
37. You should also thoroughly inquire about the well-being of the sons of maidservants, and those servants of the Kurus who are their many dependents, including the hunchbacks and cripples, after informing them that I am well, especially even the lowest among them.
कच्चिद्वृत्तिर्वर्तते वै पुराणी कच्चिद्भोगान्धार्तराष्ट्रो ददाति ।
अङ्गहीनान्कृपणान्वामनांश्च आनृशंस्याद्धृतराष्ट्रो बिभर्ति ॥३८॥
38. kaccidvṛttirvartate vai purāṇī; kaccidbhogāndhārtarāṣṭro dadāti ,
aṅgahīnānkṛpaṇānvāmanāṁśca; ānṛśaṁsyāddhṛtarāṣṭro bibharti.
38. kaccit vṛttiḥ vartate vai purāṇī
kaccit bhogān dhārtarāṣṭraḥ dadāti
| aṅgahīnān kṛpaṇān vāmanān
ca ānṛśaṃsyāt dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ bibharti
38. I hope their traditional livelihood continues to exist. I hope Dhṛtarāṣṭra provides them with provisions. Out of kindness (ānṛśaṃsya), Dhṛtarāṣṭra maintains the physically disabled, the wretched, and the dwarfs.
अन्धाश्च सर्वे स्थविरास्तथैव हस्ताजीवा बहवो येऽत्र सन्ति ।
आख्याय मां कुशलिनं स्म तेषामनामयं परिपृच्छेर्जघन्यम् ॥३९॥
39. andhāśca sarve sthavirāstathaiva; hastājīvā bahavo ye'tra santi ,
ākhyāya māṁ kuśalinaṁ sma teṣā;manāmayaṁ paripṛccherjaghanyam.
39. andhāḥ ca sarve sthavirāḥ tathā
eva hasta ājīvāḥ bahavaḥ ye atra
santi ākhyāya mām kuśalinam sma
teṣām anāmayam paripṛccheḥ jaghanyam
39. All those who are blind and aged, and also the many manual laborers who are present here—after informing them of my well-being, you should inquire thoroughly about their health, especially among the most vulnerable.
मा भैष्ट दुःखेन कुजीवितेन नूनं कृतं परलोकेषु पापम् ।
निगृह्य शत्रून्सुहृदोऽनुगृह्य वासोभिरन्नेन च वो भरिष्ये ॥४०॥
40. mā bhaiṣṭa duḥkhena kujīvitena; nūnaṁ kṛtaṁ paralokeṣu pāpam ,
nigṛhya śatrūnsuhṛdo'nugṛhya; vāsobhirannena ca vo bhariṣye.
40. mā bhaiṣṭa duḥkhena kujīvitena
nūnam kṛtam paralokeṣu pāpam
nigṛhya śatrūn suhṛdaḥ anugṛhya
vāsobhiḥ annena ca vaḥ bhariṣye
40. Do not fear because of suffering or a miserable existence; indeed, sin (karma) was certainly committed in other worlds (saṃsāra). Having subdued enemies and shown favor to friends, I will sustain you with clothes and food.
सन्त्येव मे ब्राह्मणेभ्यः कृतानि भावीन्यथो नो बत वर्तयन्ति ।
पश्याम्यहं युक्तरूपांस्तथैव तामेव सिद्धिं श्रावयेथा नृपं तम् ॥४१॥
41. santyeva me brāhmaṇebhyaḥ kṛtāni; bhāvīnyatho no bata vartayanti ,
paśyāmyahaṁ yuktarūpāṁstathaiva; tāmeva siddhiṁ śrāvayethā nṛpaṁ tam.
41. santi eva me brāhmaṇebhyaḥ kṛtāni
bhāvīni atho na u bata vartayanti
paśyāmi aham yuktarūpān tathā eva
tām eva siddhim śrāvayethāḥ nṛpam tam
41. Indeed, there are good deeds performed by me for the Brahmins, as well as those intended for the future; but alas, they are not being effectively maintained (for the Brahmins). I myself perceive appropriate methods, and you should similarly inform that king of that very achievement (siddhi).
ये चानाथा दुर्बलाः सर्वकालमात्मन्येव प्रयतन्तेऽथ मूढाः ।
तांश्चापि त्वं कृपणान्सर्वथैव अस्मद्वाक्यात्कुशलं तात पृच्छेः ॥४२॥
42. ye cānāthā durbalāḥ sarvakāla;mātmanyeva prayatante'tha mūḍhāḥ ,
tāṁścāpi tvaṁ kṛpaṇānsarvathaiva; asmadvākyātkuśalaṁ tāta pṛccheḥ.
42. ye ca anāthāḥ durbalāḥ sarvakālam
ātmani eva prayatante atha mūḍhāḥ
tān ca api tvam kṛpaṇān sarvathā
eva asmat vākyāt kuśalam tāta pṛccheḥ
42. And those who are helpless, weak, and foolish, who always strive (for existence) solely by themselves—you, dear one, at my instruction, should inquire about the well-being of all those miserable ones in every way.
ये चाप्यन्ये संश्रिता धार्तराष्ट्रान्नानादिग्भ्योऽभ्यागताः सूतपुत्र ।
दृष्ट्वा तांश्चैवार्हतश्चापि सर्वान्संपृच्छेथाः कुशलं चाव्ययं च ॥४३॥
43. ye cāpyanye saṁśritā dhārtarāṣṭrā;nnānādigbhyo'bhyāgatāḥ sūtaputra ,
dṛṣṭvā tāṁścaivārhataścāpi sarvā;nsaṁpṛcchethāḥ kuśalaṁ cāvyayaṁ ca.
43. ye ca api anye saṃśritāḥ dhārtarāṣṭrān
nānā digbhyaḥ abhyāgatāḥ sūtaputra
dṛṣṭvā tān ca eva arhataḥ ca api sarvān
sampṛcchethāḥ kuśalaṃ ca avyayaṃ ca
43. O son of Sūta, you should inquire about the well-being and lasting welfare of all those others who have taken refuge with the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having arrived from various directions, and also of all those worthy individuals.
एवं सर्वानागताभ्यागतांश्च राज्ञो दूतान्सर्वदिग्भ्योऽभ्युपेतान् ।
पृष्ट्वा सर्वान्कुशलं तांश्च सूत पश्चादहं कुशली तेषु वाच्यः ॥४४॥
44. evaṁ sarvānāgatābhyāgatāṁśca; rājño dūtānsarvadigbhyo'bhyupetān ,
pṛṣṭvā sarvānkuśalaṁ tāṁśca sūta; paścādahaṁ kuśalī teṣu vācyaḥ.
44. evaṃ sarvān āgatābhyāgatān ca rājñaḥ
dūtān sarvadigbhyaḥ abhyupetān
pṛṣṭvā sarvān kuśalaṃ tān ca sūta
paścāt ahaṃ kuśalī teṣu vācyaḥ
44. O Sūta, in this manner, after you have inquired about the well-being of all those who have arrived and assembled, and also of the king's messengers who have come from all directions, then I should be declared to them as being well.
न हीदृशाः सन्त्यपरे पृथिव्यां ये योधका धार्तराष्ट्रेण लब्धाः ।
धर्मस्तु नित्यो मम धर्म एव महाबलः शत्रुनिबर्हणाय ॥४५॥
45. na hīdṛśāḥ santyapare pṛthivyāṁ; ye yodhakā dhārtarāṣṭreṇa labdhāḥ ,
dharmastu nityo mama dharma eva; mahābalaḥ śatrunibarhaṇāya.
45. na hi īdṛśāḥ santi apare pṛthivyāṃ
ye yodhakāḥ dhārtarāṣṭreṇa
labdhāḥ dharmaḥ tu nityaḥ mama
dharmaḥ eva mahābalaḥ śatrunibarhaṇāya
45. Indeed, there are no other warriors on earth like those acquired by Dhṛtarāṣṭra's son. But my own intrinsic nature (dharma) is constant and indeed very powerful for the destruction of enemies.
इदं पुनर्वचनं धार्तराष्ट्रं सुयोधनं संजय श्रावयेथाः ।
यस्ते शरीरे हृदयं दुनोति कामः कुरूनसपत्नोऽनुशिष्याम् ॥४६॥
46. idaṁ punarvacanaṁ dhārtarāṣṭraṁ; suyodhanaṁ saṁjaya śrāvayethāḥ ,
yaste śarīre hṛdayaṁ dunoti; kāmaḥ kurūnasapatno'nuśiṣyām.
46. idaṃ punaḥ vacanaṃ dhārtarāṣṭraṃ
suyodhanaṃ saṃjaya śrāvayethāḥ
yaḥ te śarīre hṛdayaṃ dunoti
kāmaḥ kurūn asapatnaḥ anuśiṣyām
46. O Sañjaya, you should, moreover, convey this message to Suyodhana, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra: 'The desire that I (Yudhiṣṭhira) should rule the Kurus unopposed is what pains your heart.'
न विद्यते युक्तिरेतस्य काचिन्नैवंविधाः स्याम यथा प्रियं ते ।
ददस्व वा शक्रपुरं ममैव युध्यस्व वा भारतमुख्य वीर ॥४७॥
47. na vidyate yuktiretasya kāci;nnaivaṁvidhāḥ syāma yathā priyaṁ te ,
dadasva vā śakrapuraṁ mamaiva; yudhyasva vā bhāratamukhya vīra.
47. na vidyate yuktiḥ etasya kācit na
evamvidhāḥ syāma yathā priyam
te dadhasva vā śakrapuram mama
eva yudhyasva vā bhāratamukhya vīra
47. There is no justification for this, nor should we be such (that we act) as you desire. Either grant me Indra's city, or fight, O foremost hero among the Bhāratas.
