वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तत्तु वाक्यमनादृत्य सोऽर्थवन्मातृभाषितम् ।
पुनः प्रतस्थे संरम्भात्सकाशमकृतात्मनाम् ॥१॥

1. Vaiśampāyana said: But he, disregarding that meaningful advice spoken by his mother, again departed in his agitation towards the company of those whose souls (ātman) were undisciplined.
ततः सभाया निर्गम्य मन्त्रयामास कौरवः ।
सौबलेन मताक्षेण राज्ञा शकुनिना सह ॥२॥
2. tataḥ sabhāyā nirgamya mantrayāmāsa kauravaḥ ,
saubalena matākṣeṇa rājñā śakuninā saha.

2. Then, having exited the assembly hall, the Kuru prince (Duryodhana) consulted with King Shakuni, the son of Subala, who was adept at dice.
दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेः सौबलस्य च ।
दुःशासनचतुर्थानामिदमासीद्विचेष्टितम् ॥३॥
3. duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneḥ saubalasya ca ,

3. This was the maneuver of Duryodhana, Karṇa, Śakuni (son of Subala), and Duḥśāsana, who was the fourth among them.
पुरायमस्मान्गृह्णाति क्षिप्रकारी जनार्दनः ।
सहितो धृतराष्ट्रेण राज्ञा शांतनवेन च ॥४॥
4. purāyamasmāngṛhṇāti kṣiprakārī janārdanaḥ ,
sahito dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa rājñā śāṁtanavena ca.
4. purā ayam asmān gṛhṇāti kṣiprakārī Janārdanaḥ

4. Lest this swift-acting Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa) seizes us while he is accompanied by King Dhṛtarāṣṭra and Bhīṣma (son of Śāntanu).
वयमेव हृषीकेशं निगृह्णीम बलादिव ।
प्रसह्य पुरुषव्याघ्रमिन्द्रो वैरोचनिं यथा ॥५॥
5. vayameva hṛṣīkeśaṁ nigṛhṇīma balādiva ,
prasahya puruṣavyāghramindro vairocaniṁ yathā.

prasahya puruṣavyāghram Indraḥ Vairocanim yathā

5. Indeed, let us ourselves seize Hṛṣīkeśa (Kṛṣṇa) by force, having forcibly overpowered this supreme cosmic person (puruṣa) (lit. tiger among men), just as Indra (seized) Bali (son of Virocana).
श्रुत्वा गृहीतं वार्ष्णेयं पाण्डवा हतचेतसः ।
निरुत्साहा भविष्यन्ति भग्नदंष्ट्रा इवोरगाः ॥६॥
6. śrutvā gṛhītaṁ vārṣṇeyaṁ pāṇḍavā hatacetasaḥ ,
nirutsāhā bhaviṣyanti bhagnadaṁṣṭrā ivoragāḥ.

nirutsāhāḥ bhaviṣyanti bhagnadaṃṣṭrāḥ iva uragāḥ
6. Vārṣṇeyam gṛhītam śrutvā Pāṇḍavāḥ hatacetasaḥ
nirutsāhāḥ bhagnadaṃṣṭrāḥ uragāḥ iva bhaviṣyanti
6. Having heard that Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa) has been apprehended, the Pāṇḍavas will become disheartened and despondent, like serpents with broken fangs.
अयं ह्येषां महाबाहुः सर्वेषां शर्म वर्म च ।
अस्मिन्गृहीते वरदे ऋषभे सर्वसात्वताम् ।
निरुद्यमा भविष्यन्ति पाण्डवाः सोमकैः सह ॥७॥
7. ayaṁ hyeṣāṁ mahābāhuḥ sarveṣāṁ śarma varma ca ,
asmingṛhīte varade ṛṣabhe sarvasātvatām ,
nirudyamā bhaviṣyanti pāṇḍavāḥ somakaiḥ saha.
7. ayam hi eṣām mahābāhuḥ sarveṣām
śarma varma ca asmin gṛhīte varade
ṛṣabhe sarvasātvatām nirudyamaḥ
bhaviṣyanti pāṇḍavāḥ somakaiḥ saha
7. hi ayam mahābāhuḥ sarveṣām śarma ca varma eṣām (asti).
asmin varade ṛṣabhe sarvasātvatām gṛhīte,
pāṇḍavāḥ somakaiḥ saha nirudyamaḥ bhaviṣyanti.
7. Indeed, this mighty-armed one is the protection and shield for all of them. If this bestower of boons, the chief among all Sātvatas, is apprehended, the Pāṇḍavas, along with the Somakas, will become utterly helpless.
तस्माद्वयमिहैवैनं केशवं क्षिप्रकारिणम् ।
क्रोशतो धृतराष्ट्रस्य बद्ध्वा योत्स्यामहे रिपून् ॥८॥
8. tasmādvayamihaivainaṁ keśavaṁ kṣiprakāriṇam ,
krośato dhṛtarāṣṭrasya baddhvā yotsyāmahe ripūn.
8. tasmāt vayam iha eva enam keśavam kṣiprakāriṇam
krośataḥ dhṛtarāṣṭrasya baddhvā yotsyāmahe ripūn
8. tasmāt,
vayam enam kṣiprakāriṇam keśavam iha eva dhṛtarāṣṭrasya krośataḥ baddhvā ripūn yotsyāmahe.
8. Therefore, we, right here, will bind this swift-acting Keśava and fight our enemies, even as Dhṛtarāṣṭra protests.
तेषां पापमभिप्रायं पापानां दुष्टचेतसाम् ।
इङ्गितज्ञः कविः क्षिप्रमन्वबुध्यत सात्यकिः ॥९॥
9. teṣāṁ pāpamabhiprāyaṁ pāpānāṁ duṣṭacetasām ,
iṅgitajñaḥ kaviḥ kṣipramanvabudhyata sātyakiḥ.
9. teṣām pāpam abhiprāyam pāpānām duṣṭacetasām
iṅgitajñaḥ kaviḥ kṣipram anvabudhyata sātyakiḥ
9. iṅgitajñaḥ kaviḥ sātyakiḥ,
teṣām pāpānām duṣṭacetasām pāpam abhiprāyam kṣipram anvabudhyata.
9. Sātyaki, a wise one who understood intentions, quickly comprehended the sinful purpose of those wicked-minded, sinful people.
तदर्थमभिनिष्क्रम्य हार्दिक्येन सहास्थितः ।
अब्रवीत्कृतवर्माणं क्षिप्रं योजय वाहिनीम् ॥१०॥
10. tadarthamabhiniṣkramya hārdikyena sahāsthitaḥ ,
abravītkṛtavarmāṇaṁ kṣipraṁ yojaya vāhinīm.
10. tadartham abhiniṣkramya hārdikyena saha āsthitaḥ
abravīt kṛtavarmāṇam kṣipram yojaya vāhinīm
10. tadartham abhiniṣkramya,
hārdikyena saha āsthitaḥ (sātyakiḥ) kṛtavarmāṇam abravīt: "kṣipram vāhinīm yojaya.
"
10. Having gone forth for that purpose, he stood there with Hārdikya and told Kṛtavarmā, 'Quickly mobilize the army!'
व्यूढानीकः सभाद्वारमुपतिष्ठस्व दंशितः ।
यावदाख्याम्यहं चैतत्कृष्णायाक्लिष्टकर्मणे ॥११॥
11. vyūḍhānīkaḥ sabhādvāramupatiṣṭhasva daṁśitaḥ ,
yāvadākhyāmyahaṁ caitatkṛṣṇāyākliṣṭakarmaṇe.
11. vyūḍhānīkaḥ sabhādvāram upatiṣṭhasva daṃśitaḥ
yāvat ākhyāmi aham ca etat kṛṣṇāya akliṣṭakarmaṇe
11. vyūḍhānīkaḥ daṃśitaḥ sabhādvāram upatiṣṭhasva
yāvat aham ca etat akliṣṭakarmaṇe kṛṣṇāya ākhyāmi
11. Deploy your army and, being fully armed, wait at the entrance of the assembly hall until I explain this matter to Krishna, the one of unwearied deeds (karma).
स प्रविश्य सभां वीरः सिंहो गिरिगुहामिव ।
आचष्ट तमभिप्रायं केशवाय महात्मने ॥१२॥
12. sa praviśya sabhāṁ vīraḥ siṁho giriguhāmiva ,
ācaṣṭa tamabhiprāyaṁ keśavāya mahātmane.
12. saḥ praviśya sabhām vīraḥ siṃhaḥ giriguhām
iva ācaṣṭa tam abhiprāyam keśavāya mahātmane
12. saḥ vīraḥ sabhām praviśya siṃhaḥ giriguhām
iva tam abhiprāyam mahātmane keśavāya ācaṣṭa
12. That hero, having entered the assembly hall like a lion entering a mountain cave, related that intention to the great-souled (mahātman) Keśava.
धृतराष्ट्रं ततश्चैव विदुरं चान्वभाषत ।
तेषामेतमभिप्रायमाचचक्षे स्मयन्निव ॥१३॥
13. dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ tataścaiva viduraṁ cānvabhāṣata ,
teṣāmetamabhiprāyamācacakṣe smayanniva.
13. dhṛtarāṣṭram tataḥ ca eva viduram ca anvabhāṣata
teṣām etam abhiprāyam ācacukṣe smayan iva
13. tataḥ ca eva dhṛtarāṣṭram viduram ca anvabhāṣata
smayan iva teṣām etam abhiprāyam ācacukṣe
13. And then he addressed Dhritarashtra and Vidura. As if smiling, he explained this intention of theirs.
धर्मादपेतमर्थाच्च कर्म साधुविगर्हितम् ।
मन्दाः कर्तुमिहेच्छन्ति न चावाप्यं कथंचन ॥१४॥
14. dharmādapetamarthācca karma sādhuvigarhitam ,
mandāḥ kartumihecchanti na cāvāpyaṁ kathaṁcana.
14. dharmāt apetam arthāt ca karma sādhuvigarhitam
mandāḥ kartum iha icchanti na ca avāpyam kathaṃcana
14. iha mandāḥ dharmāt arthāt ca apetam sādhuvigarhitam
karma kartum icchanti ca na kathaṃcana avāpyam
14. Dull-witted individuals here desire to perform an action (karma) that deviates from both natural law (dharma) and practical purpose (artha), and is censured by virtuous people. Moreover, such a thing is not achievable by any means whatsoever.
पुरा विकुर्वते मूढाः पापात्मानः समागताः ।
धर्षिताः काममन्युभ्यां क्रोधलोभवशानुगाः ॥१५॥
15. purā vikurvate mūḍhāḥ pāpātmānaḥ samāgatāḥ ,
dharṣitāḥ kāmamanyubhyāṁ krodhalobhavaśānugāḥ.
15. purā vikurvate mūḍhāḥ pāpātmānaḥ samāgatāḥ
dharṣitāḥ kāmamanyubhyām krodhalobhavaśānugāḥ
15. purā samāgatāḥ mūḍhāḥ pāpātmānaḥ kāmamanyubhyām
dharṣitāḥ krodhalobhavaśānugāḥ vikurvate
15. In the past, foolish and wicked individuals, who had gathered together, committed improper deeds. They were overpowered by desire and rage, succumbing to the control of anger and greed.
इमं हि पुण्डरीकाक्षं जिघृक्षन्त्यल्पचेतसः ।
पटेनाग्निं प्रज्वलितं यथा बाला यथा जडाः ॥१६॥
16. imaṁ hi puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ jighṛkṣantyalpacetasaḥ ,
paṭenāgniṁ prajvalitaṁ yathā bālā yathā jaḍāḥ.
16. imam hi puṇḍarīkākṣam jighṛkṣanti alpacetasaḥ
paṭena agnim prajvalitam yathā bālāḥ yathā jaḍāḥ
16. hi alpacetasaḥ imam puṇḍarīkākṣam jighṛkṣanti yathā
bālāḥ yathā jaḍāḥ paṭena prajvalitam agnim (jighṛkṣanti)
16. Indeed, these foolish, small-minded individuals wish to seize this lotus-eyed one (Lord Krishna), just as children or dull-witted people attempt to grasp a blazing fire with a mere cloth.
सात्यकेस्तद्वचः श्रुत्वा विदुरो दीर्घदर्शिवान् ।
धृतराष्ट्रं महाबाहुमब्रवीत्कुरुसंसदि ॥१७॥
17. sātyakestadvacaḥ śrutvā viduro dīrghadarśivān ,
dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ mahābāhumabravītkurusaṁsadi.
17. sātyakeḥ tat vacaḥ śrutvā viduraḥ dīrghadarśivān
dhṛtarāṣṭram mahābāhum abravīt kurusaṃsadi
17. sātyakeḥ tat vacaḥ śrutvā dīrghadarśivān viduraḥ
kurusaṃsadi mahābāhum dhṛtarāṣṭram abravīt
17. Having heard those words from Satyaki, the far-sighted Vidura then addressed the mighty-armed Dhritarashtra in the assembly of the Kurus.
राजन्परीतकालास्ते पुत्राः सर्वे परंतप ।
अयशस्यमशक्यं च कर्म कर्तुं समुद्यताः ॥१८॥
18. rājanparītakālāste putrāḥ sarve paraṁtapa ,
ayaśasyamaśakyaṁ ca karma kartuṁ samudyatāḥ.
18. rājan parītakālāḥ te putrāḥ sarve paraṃtapa
ayaśasyam aśakyam ca karma kartum samudyatāḥ
18. rājan paraṃtapa te sarve putrāḥ parītakālāḥ (santaḥ)
ayaśasyam aśakyam ca karma kartum samudyatāḥ
18. O King, scorcher of foes, all your sons, whose time is near, are prepared to undertake a deed that is both disgraceful and impossible.
इमं हि पुण्डरीकाक्षमभिभूय प्रसह्य च ।
निग्रहीतुं किलेच्छन्ति सहिता वासवानुजम् ॥१९॥
19. imaṁ hi puṇḍarīkākṣamabhibhūya prasahya ca ,
nigrahītuṁ kilecchanti sahitā vāsavānujam.
19. imam hi puṇḍarīkākṣam abhibhūya prasahya ca
nigrahītum kila icchanti sahitāḥ vāsavānujam
19. hi sahitāḥ (te) imam puṇḍarīkākṣam vāsavānujam
abhibhūya ca prasahya nigrahītum kila icchanti
19. Indeed, it is said that they, united, desire to overpower and forcibly seize this lotus-eyed one, the younger brother of Indra.
इमं पुरुषशार्दूलमप्रधृष्यं दुरासदम् ।
आसाद्य न भविष्यन्ति पतंगा इव पावकम् ॥२०॥
20. imaṁ puruṣaśārdūlamapradhṛṣyaṁ durāsadam ,
āsādya na bhaviṣyanti pataṁgā iva pāvakam.
20. imam puruṣaśārdūlam apradhṛṣyam durāsadam
āsādya na bhaviṣyanti pataṅgāḥ iva pāvakam
20. imam apradhṛṣyam durāsadam puruṣaśārdūlam āsādya,
pataṅgāḥ iva pāvakam na bhaviṣyanti
20. Having approached this unconquerable (apradhṛṣyam), unassailable (durāsadam) tiger among men, they will not survive, just like moths perish by fire (pāvakam).
अयमिच्छन्हि तान्सर्वान्यतमानाञ्जनार्दनः ।
सिंहो मृगानिव क्रुद्धो गमयेद्यमसादनम् ॥२१॥
21. ayamicchanhi tānsarvānyatamānāñjanārdanaḥ ,
siṁho mṛgāniva kruddho gamayedyamasādanam.
21. ayam icchan hi tān sarvān yatamānān janārdanaḥ
siṃhaḥ mṛgān iva kruddhaḥ gamayet yamasādanam
21. ayam janārdanaḥ hi icchan,
kruddhaḥ siṃhaḥ mṛgān iva,
tān sarvān yatamānān yamasādanam gamayet
21. Indeed, this Janardana (janārdanaḥ), if he wished, would send all those striving ones to the abode of Yama (yamasādanam), just as an enraged lion drives deer to their doom.
न त्वयं निन्दितं कर्म कुर्यात्कृष्णः कथंचन ।
न च धर्मादपक्रामेदच्युतः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥२२॥
22. na tvayaṁ ninditaṁ karma kuryātkṛṣṇaḥ kathaṁcana ,
na ca dharmādapakrāmedacyutaḥ puruṣottamaḥ.
22. na tu ayam ninditam karma kuryāt kṛṣṇaḥ kathaṃcana
na ca dharmāt apakrāmet acyutaḥ puruṣottamaḥ
22. tu ayam kṛṣṇaḥ ninditam karma kathaṃcana na kuryāt.
ca acyutaḥ puruṣottamaḥ dharmāt na apakrāmet
22. But this Krishna (kṛṣṇaḥ) would never by any means perform a despicable action (karma). And Acyuta (acyutaḥ), the supreme person (puruṣottamaḥ), would never deviate from his natural law (dharma).
विदुरेणैवमुक्ते तु केशवो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
धृतराष्ट्रमभिप्रेक्ष्य सुहृदां शृण्वतां मिथः ॥२३॥
23. vidureṇaivamukte tu keśavo vākyamabravīt ,
dhṛtarāṣṭramabhiprekṣya suhṛdāṁ śṛṇvatāṁ mithaḥ.
23. vidureṇa evam ukte tu keśavaḥ vākyam abravīt
dhṛtarāṣṭram abhiprekṣya suhṛdām śṛṇvatām mithaḥ
23. vidureṇa evam ukte tu keśavaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭram
abhiprekṣya suhṛdām śṛṇvatām mithaḥ vākyam abravīt
23. When Vidura had spoken in this manner, Keshava (Krishna), looking towards Dhritarashtra, uttered these words in the presence of listening friends.
राजन्नेते यदि क्रुद्धा मां निगृह्णीयुरोजसा ।
एते वा मामहं वैनाननुजानीहि पार्थिव ॥२४॥
24. rājannete yadi kruddhā māṁ nigṛhṇīyurojasā ,
ete vā māmahaṁ vainānanujānīhi pārthiva.
24. rājan ete yadi kruddhāḥ mām nigṛhṇīyuḥ ojasā
ete vā mām aham vai enān anujānīhi pārthiva
24. rājan pārthiva yadi ete kruddhāḥ ojasā mām
nigṛhṇīyuḥ (then) ete vā mām aham vai enān anujānīhi
24. O King, if these (Kauravas), enraged, attempt to seize me by force, then let them seize me, or I shall certainly seize them. O King (pārthiva), grant me permission!
एतान्हि सर्वान्संरब्धान्नियन्तुमहमुत्सहे ।
न त्वहं निन्दितं कर्म कुर्यां पापं कथंचन ॥२५॥
25. etānhi sarvānsaṁrabdhānniyantumahamutsahe ,
na tvahaṁ ninditaṁ karma kuryāṁ pāpaṁ kathaṁcana.
25. etān hi sarvān saṃrabdhān niyantum aham utsahe na
tu aham ninditam karma kuryām pāpam kathaṃcana
25. hi aham etān sarvān saṃrabdhān niyantum utsahe tu
aham ninditam pāpam karma kathaṃcana na kuryām
25. Indeed, I am capable of restraining all these enraged ones, but I would never, by any means, perform a blameworthy or sinful action.
पाण्डवार्थे हि लुभ्यन्तः स्वार्थाद्धास्यन्ति ते सुताः ।
एते चेदेवमिच्छन्ति कृतकार्यो युधिष्ठिरः ॥२६॥
26. pāṇḍavārthe hi lubhyantaḥ svārthāddhāsyanti te sutāḥ ,
ete cedevamicchanti kṛtakāryo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
26. pāṇḍavārthe hi lubhyantaḥ svārthāt hāsyanti te
sutāḥ ete cet evam icchanti kṛtakāryaḥ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
26. hi te sutāḥ pāṇḍavārthe lubhyantaḥ svārthāt hāsyanti cet
ete evam icchanti (then) yudhiṣṭhiraḥ kṛtakāryaḥ (bhavati)
26. Indeed, if your sons act greedily regarding the Pandavas, they will lose their own welfare. If they (your sons) truly wish for this, then Yudhishthira will have achieved his purpose.
अद्यैव ह्यहमेतांश्च ये चैताननु भारत ।
निगृह्य राजन्पार्थेभ्यो दद्यां किं दुष्कृतं भवेत् ॥२७॥
27. adyaiva hyahametāṁśca ye caitānanu bhārata ,
nigṛhya rājanpārthebhyo dadyāṁ kiṁ duṣkṛtaṁ bhavet.
27. adya eva hi aham etān ca ye ca etān anu bhārata
nigṛhya rājan pārtkebhyaḥ dadyām kim duṣkṛtam bhavet
27. bhārata rājan hi adya eva aham etān ca ye ca etān
anu nigṛhya pārtkebhyaḥ dadyām kim duṣkṛtam bhavet
27. O Bhārata, today itself I could indeed seize these (Kauravas) and those who follow them. O King, if I were to seize them and give them to the Pārthas (Pāṇḍavas), what great misdeed (duṣkṛta) would that be (implying it would be a huge misdeed)!
इदं तु न प्रवर्तेयं निन्दितं कर्म भारत ।
संनिधौ ते महाराज क्रोधजं पापबुद्धिजम् ॥२८॥
28. idaṁ tu na pravarteyaṁ ninditaṁ karma bhārata ,
saṁnidhau te mahārāja krodhajaṁ pāpabuddhijam.
28. idam tu na pravartayeyam ninditam karma bhārata
sannidhau te mahārāja krodhajam pāpabuddhijam
28. bhārata mahārāja tu idam ninditam karma krodhajam
pāpabuddhijam te sannidhau na pravartayeyam
28. But, O Bhārata, this censurable action (karma), born of anger and originating from sinful intent, I would certainly not undertake in your presence, O great king.
एष दुर्योधनो राजन्यथेच्छति तथास्तु तत् ।
अहं तु सर्वान्समयाननुजानामि भारत ॥२९॥
29. eṣa duryodhano rājanyathecchati tathāstu tat ,
ahaṁ tu sarvānsamayānanujānāmi bhārata.
29. eṣaḥ duryodhanaḥ rājan yathā icchati tathā astu
tat aham tu sarvān samayān anujānāmi bhārata
29. rājan eṣaḥ duryodhanaḥ yathā icchati tat tathā
astu bhārata tu aham sarvān samayān anujānāmi
29. O King, let this Duryodhana have it as he wishes. But I, O Bhārata, approve of all the agreements (samaya).
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु विदुरं धृतराष्ट्रोऽभ्यभाषत ।
क्षिप्रमानय तं पापं राज्यलुब्धं सुयोधनम् ॥३०॥
30. etacchrutvā tu viduraṁ dhṛtarāṣṭro'bhyabhāṣata ,
kṣipramānaya taṁ pāpaṁ rājyalubdhaṁ suyodhanam.
30. etat śrutvā tu viduram dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ abhyabhāṣata
kṣipram ānaya tam pāpam rājyalubdham suyodhanam

30. Having heard this, Dhṛtarāṣṭra then addressed Vidura: 'Quickly bring that sinful, kingdom-greedy Suyodhana!'
सहमित्रं सहामात्यं ससोदर्यं सहानुगम् ।
शक्नुयां यदि पन्थानमवतारयितुं पुनः ॥३१॥
31. sahamitraṁ sahāmātyaṁ sasodaryaṁ sahānugam ,
śaknuyāṁ yadi panthānamavatārayituṁ punaḥ.
31. saha-mitram saha-amātyam saha-sodaryam saha-anugam
śaknuyām yadi panthānam avatārayitum punaḥ
31. yadi śaknuyām punaḥ saha-mitram saha-amātyam
saha-sodaryam saha-anugam panthānam avatārayitum
31. If I could again lead him, along with his friends, ministers, siblings, and followers, away from this path.
ततो दुर्योधनं क्षत्ता पुनः प्रावेशयत्सभाम् ।
अकामं भ्रातृभिः सार्धं राजभिः परिवारितम् ॥३२॥
32. tato duryodhanaṁ kṣattā punaḥ prāveśayatsabhām ,
akāmaṁ bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdhaṁ rājabhiḥ parivāritam.
32. tataḥ duryodhanam kṣattā punaḥ prāveśayat sabhām
akāmam bhrātṛbhiḥ sārdham rājabhiḥ parivāritam

32. Then the charioteer (Vidura) again made Duryodhana enter the assembly hall, unwilling, accompanied by his brothers and surrounded by kings.
अथ दुर्योधनं राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽभ्यभाषत ।
कर्णदुःशासनाभ्यां च राजभिश्चाभिसंवृतम् ॥३३॥
33. atha duryodhanaṁ rājā dhṛtarāṣṭro'bhyabhāṣata ,
karṇaduḥśāsanābhyāṁ ca rājabhiścābhisaṁvṛtam.

33. Then King Dhritarashtra addressed Duryodhana, who was surrounded by Karna and Duhshasana, and also by other kings.
नृशंस पापभूयिष्ठ क्षुद्रकर्मसहायवान् ।
पापैः सहायैः संहत्य पापं कर्म चिकीर्षसि ॥३४॥
34. nṛśaṁsa pāpabhūyiṣṭha kṣudrakarmasahāyavān ,
pāpaiḥ sahāyaiḥ saṁhatya pāpaṁ karma cikīrṣasi.
34. nṛśaṃsa pāpabhūyiṣṭha kṣudra-karma-sahāyavān
pāpaiḥ sahāyaiḥ saṃhatya pāpam karma cikīrṣasi
34. he nṛśaṃsa he pāpabhūyiṣṭha he kṣudra-karma-sahāyavān,
pāpaiḥ sahāyaiḥ saṃhatya pāpam karma cikīrṣasi
34. O cruel one, most steeped in sin, whose helpers are associated with despicable actions! Having allied with wicked companions, you intend to commit a sinful act (karma).
अशक्यमयशस्यं च सद्भिश्चापि विगर्हितम् ।
यथा त्वादृशको मूढो व्यवस्येत्कुलपांसनः ॥३५॥
35. aśakyamayaśasyaṁ ca sadbhiścāpi vigarhitam ,
yathā tvādṛśako mūḍho vyavasyetkulapāṁsanaḥ.
35. aśakyam ayaśasyam ca sadbhiḥ ca api vigarhitam
| yathā tvādṛśakaḥ mūḍhaḥ vyavasyet kulapāṃsanaḥ
35. yathā tvādṛśakaḥ mūḍhaḥ kulapāṃsanaḥ aśakyam
ayaśasyam ca sadbhiḥ ca api vigarhitam vyavasyet
35. How could a foolish person like you, a disgrace to your family, undertake something impossible, dishonorable, and condemned even by virtuous people?
त्वमिमं पुण्डरीकाक्षमप्रधृष्यं दुरासदम् ।
पापैः सहायैः संहत्य निग्रहीतुं किलेच्छसि ॥३६॥
36. tvamimaṁ puṇḍarīkākṣamapradhṛṣyaṁ durāsadam ,
pāpaiḥ sahāyaiḥ saṁhatya nigrahītuṁ kilecchasi.
36. tvam imam puṇḍarīkākṣam apradhṛṣyam durāsadam |
pāpaiḥ sahāyaiḥ saṃhatya nigrahītum kila icchasi
36. tvam kila pāpaiḥ sahāyaiḥ saṃhatya imam puṇḍarīkākṣam
apradhṛṣyam durāsadam nigrahītum icchasi
36. You indeed wish to subdue this lotus-eyed one (puṇḍarīkākṣa), who is unconquerable and unassailable, having united with wicked allies.
यो न शक्यो बलात्कर्तुं देवैरपि सवासवैः ।
तं त्वं प्रार्थयसे मन्द बालश्चन्द्रमसं यथा ॥३७॥
37. yo na śakyo balātkartuṁ devairapi savāsavaiḥ ,
taṁ tvaṁ prārthayase manda bālaścandramasaṁ yathā.
37. yaḥ na śakyaḥ balāt kartum devaiḥ api savāsavaiḥ |
tam tvam prārthayase manda bālaḥ candramasam yathā
37. manda,
tvam tam prārthayase yaḥ balāt devaiḥ savāsavaiḥ api kartum na śakyaḥ,
yathā bālaḥ candramasam (prārthayate)
37. O fool (manda)! You seek to overpower him, who cannot be brought under control by force even by the gods with Indra, just as a child reaches for the moon.
देवैर्मनुष्यैर्गन्धर्वैरसुरैरुरगैश्च यः ।
न सोढुं समरे शक्यस्तं न बुध्यसि केशवम् ॥३८॥
38. devairmanuṣyairgandharvairasurairuragaiśca yaḥ ,
na soḍhuṁ samare śakyastaṁ na budhyasi keśavam.
38. devaiḥ manuṣyaiḥ gandharvaiḥ asuraiḥ uragaiḥ ca yaḥ
| na soḍhum samare śakyaḥ tam na budhyasi keśavam
38. tvam tam keśavam na budhyasi,
yaḥ devaiḥ manuṣyaiḥ gandharvaiḥ asuraiḥ uragaiḥ ca samare soḍhum na śakyaḥ
38. You do not understand Keshava, who cannot be withstood in battle by gods, humans, Gandharvas, Asuras, or even serpents.
दुर्ग्रहः पाणिना वायुर्दुःस्पर्शः पाणिना शशी ।
दुर्धरा पृथिवी मूर्ध्ना दुर्ग्रहः केशवो बलात् ॥३९॥
39. durgrahaḥ pāṇinā vāyurduḥsparśaḥ pāṇinā śaśī ,
durdharā pṛthivī mūrdhnā durgrahaḥ keśavo balāt.
39. durgrahaḥ pāṇinā vāyuḥ duḥsparśaḥ pāṇinā śaśī
durdharā pṛthivī mūrdhnā durgrahaḥ keśavaḥ balāt
39. vāyuḥ pāṇinā durgrahaḥ śaśī pāṇinā duḥsparśaḥ

39. Air is difficult to grasp with the hand, and the moon is difficult to touch with the hand. The earth is difficult to bear on one's head. Similarly, Keśava (Krishna) is difficult to seize by force.
इत्युक्ते धृतराष्ट्रेण क्षत्तापि विदुरोऽब्रवीत् ।
दुर्योधनमभिप्रेक्ष्य धार्तराष्ट्रममर्षणम् ॥४०॥
40. ityukte dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa kṣattāpi viduro'bravīt ,
duryodhanamabhiprekṣya dhārtarāṣṭramamarṣaṇam.
40. iti ukte dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa kṣattā api viduraḥ abravīt
duryodhanam abhiprekṣya dhārtarāṣṭram amarṣaṇam
40. dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa iti ukte (sati),
kṣattā viduraḥ api (tam) duryodhanam amarṣaṇam dhārtarāṣṭram abhiprekṣya abravīt.
40. When this was said by Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Vidura, the chamberlain, also spoke, after looking at Duryodhana, the intolerant son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
सौभद्वारे वानरेन्द्रो द्विविदो नाम नामतः ।
शिलावर्षेण महता छादयामास केशवम् ॥४१॥
41. saubhadvāre vānarendro dvivido nāma nāmataḥ ,
śilāvarṣeṇa mahatā chādayāmāsa keśavam.

śilāvarṣeṇa mahatā chādayāmāsa keśavam
41. saubhadvāre dvividaḥ nāma nāmataḥ vānarendraḥ mahatā śilāvarṣeṇa keśavam chādayāmāsa.
41. At the gate of Saubha, the chief of monkeys named Dvivida covered Keśava (Krishna) with a great shower of stones.
ग्रहीतुकामो विक्रम्य सर्वयत्नेन माधवम् ।
ग्रहीतुं नाशकत्तत्र तं त्वं प्रार्थयसे बलात् ॥४२॥
42. grahītukāmo vikramya sarvayatnena mādhavam ,
grahītuṁ nāśakattatra taṁ tvaṁ prārthayase balāt.
42. grahītukāmaḥ vikramya sarvayātneṇa mādhavam
grahītum na aśakat tatra tam tvam prārthayase balāt
42. (yaḥ) mādhavam grahītukāmaḥ sarvayātneṇa vikramya (tam) grahītum tatra na aśakat (adya) tvam tam balāt prārthayase.
42. Even though one desired to seize Mādhava (Krishna) and exerted all effort, he was unable to capture him. Yet, you (Duryodhana) seek to take him by force.
निर्मोचने षट्सहस्राः पाशैर्बद्ध्वा महासुराः ।
ग्रहीतुं नाशकंश्चैनं तं त्वं प्रार्थयसे बलात् ॥४३॥
43. nirmocane ṣaṭsahasrāḥ pāśairbaddhvā mahāsurāḥ ,
grahītuṁ nāśakaṁścainaṁ taṁ tvaṁ prārthayase balāt.
43. nirmocane ṣaṭsahasrāḥ pāśaiḥ baddhvā mahāsurāḥ
grahītum na aśakan ca enam tam tvam prārthayase balāt
43. ṣaṭsahasrāḥ mahāsurāḥ pāśaiḥ baddhvā enam grahītum na aśakan ca.
tvam tam balāt prārthayase.
43. Even for the purpose of liberating others, six thousand great asuras, having bound (beings) with ropes, were unable to seize him. Yet you forcibly entreat him.
प्राग्ज्योतिषगतं शौरिं नरकः सह दानवैः ।
ग्रहीतुं नाशकत्तत्र तं त्वं प्रार्थयसे बलात् ॥४४॥
44. prāgjyotiṣagataṁ śauriṁ narakaḥ saha dānavaiḥ ,
grahītuṁ nāśakattatra taṁ tvaṁ prārthayase balāt.
44. prāgjyotiṣagatam śaurim narakaḥ saha dānavaiḥ
grahītum na aśakat tatra tam tvam prārthayase balāt
44. narakaḥ dānavaiḥ saha prāgjyotiṣagatam śaurim tatra grahītum na aśakat.

44. Even Naraka, accompanied by the Danavas, was unable to seize Krishna (śauri) in Pragjyotisha, yet you forcibly entreat him.
अनेन हि हता बाल्ये पूतना शिशुना तथा ।
गोवर्धनो धारितश्च गवार्थे भरतर्षभ ॥४५॥
45. anena hi hatā bālye pūtanā śiśunā tathā ,
govardhano dhāritaśca gavārthe bharatarṣabha.
45. anena hi hatā bālye pūtanā śiśunā tathā
govardhanaḥ dhāritaḥ ca gavārthe bharatarṣabha
45. bharatarṣabha,
anena śiśunā bālye pūtanā hi hatā,
tathā gavārthe govardhanaḥ ca dhāritaḥ.
45. O best among the Bharatas (bharatarṣabha), this child indeed killed Putana (pūtanā) in his childhood, and also, for the sake of the cows, Govardhana (govardhana) was lifted.
अरिष्टो धेनुकश्चैव चाणूरश्च महाबलः ।
अश्वराजश्च निहतः कंसश्चारिष्टमाचरन् ॥४६॥
46. ariṣṭo dhenukaścaiva cāṇūraśca mahābalaḥ ,
aśvarājaśca nihataḥ kaṁsaścāriṣṭamācaran.
46. ariṣṭaḥ dhenukaḥ ca eva cāṇūraḥ ca mahābalaḥ
aśvarājaḥ ca nihataḥ kaṃsaḥ ca ariṣṭam ācaran
46. ariṣṭaḥ ca dhenukaḥ ca eva,
mahābalaḥ cāṇūraḥ ca,
aśvarājaḥ ca nihataḥ.
ariṣṭam ācaran kaṃsaḥ ca (nihataḥ).
46. Arishta (ariṣṭa) and Dhenuka (dhenuka), and indeed the mighty Chanura (cāṇūra), and Ashvaraja (aśvarāja) were slain. And Kamsa (kaṃsa), who was committing evil deeds, (was also slain).
जरासंधश्च वक्रश्च शिशुपालश्च वीर्यवान् ।
बाणश्च निहतः संख्ये राजानश्च निषूदिताः ॥४७॥
47. jarāsaṁdhaśca vakraśca śiśupālaśca vīryavān ,
bāṇaśca nihataḥ saṁkhye rājānaśca niṣūditāḥ.
47. jarāsaṃdhaḥ ca vakraḥ ca śiśupālaḥ ca vīryavān
bāṇaḥ ca nihataḥ saṃkhye rājānaḥ ca niṣūditāḥ
47. jarāsaṃdhaḥ ca vakraḥ ca śiśupālaḥ ca vīryavān
bāṇaḥ ca saṃkhye nihataḥ ca rājānaḥ niṣūditāḥ
47. Jarāsaṃdha, Vakra, and the mighty Śiśupāla, along with Bāṇa, were slain in battle; and other kings were vanquished.
वरुणो निर्जितो राजा पावकश्चामितौजसा ।
पारिजातं च हरता जितः साक्षाच्छचीपतिः ॥४८॥
48. varuṇo nirjito rājā pāvakaścāmitaujasā ,
pārijātaṁ ca haratā jitaḥ sākṣācchacīpatiḥ.
48. varuṇaḥ nirjitaḥ rājā pāvakaḥ ca amitaojasā
pārijātam ca haratā jitaḥ sākṣāt śacīpatiḥ
48. rājā varuṇaḥ nirjitaḥ ca pāvakaḥ amitaojasā
ca pārijātam haratā sākṣāt śacīpatiḥ jitaḥ
48. King Varuṇa was vanquished, and Agni (Pāvaka) was overcome by his immeasurable prowess. Even Śacīpati (Indra) himself was conquered by him when he took the Pārijāta tree.
एकार्णवे शयानेन हतौ तौ मधुकैटभौ ।
जन्मान्तरमुपागम्य हयग्रीवस्तथा हतः ॥४९॥
49. ekārṇave śayānena hatau tau madhukaiṭabhau ,
janmāntaramupāgamya hayagrīvastathā hataḥ.

janmāntaram upāgamya hayagrīvaḥ tathā hataḥ
49. ekārṇave śayānena tau madhukaiṭabhau hatau

49. The two demons, Madhu and Kaiṭabha, were slain by the one (Viṣṇu) lying on the primordial ocean. Similarly, assuming another birth, Hayagrīva was also killed.
अयं कर्ता न क्रियते कारणं चापि पौरुषे ।
यद्यदिच्छेदयं शौरिस्तत्तत्कुर्यादयत्नतः ॥५०॥
50. ayaṁ kartā na kriyate kāraṇaṁ cāpi pauruṣe ,
yadyadicchedayaṁ śauristattatkuryādayatnataḥ.
50. ayam kartā na kriyate kāraṇam ca api pauruṣe yat
yat icchet ayam śauriḥ tat tat kuryāt ayatnataḥ
50. ayam kartā na kriyate ayam ca api pauruṣe kāraṇam
ayam śauriḥ yat yat icchet tat tat ayatnataḥ kuryāt
50. This doer (Viṣṇu/Kṛṣṇa) is uncreated; he is also the cause of all activity (pauruṣa). Whatever this Śauri (Kṛṣṇa) desires, he accomplishes it effortlessly.
तं न बुध्यसि गोविन्दं घोरविक्रममच्युतम् ।
आशीविषमिव क्रुद्धं तेजोराशिमनिर्जितम् ॥५१॥
51. taṁ na budhyasi govindaṁ ghoravikramamacyutam ,
āśīviṣamiva kruddhaṁ tejorāśimanirjitam.
51. tam na budhyasi govindam ghoravikramam acyutam
āśīviṣam iva kruddham tejorāśim anirjitam
51. tam ghoravikramam acyutam kruddham āśīviṣam
iva anirjitam tejorāśim govindam na budhyasi
51. You do not understand that Govinda, the infallible one (acyutam), possesses formidable valor (ghoravikramam) and is like an enraged venomous snake, an unconquerable mass of splendor.
प्रधर्षयन्महाबाहुं कृष्णमक्लिष्टकारिणम् ।
पतंगोऽग्निमिवासाद्य सामात्यो न भविष्यसि ॥५२॥
52. pradharṣayanmahābāhuṁ kṛṣṇamakliṣṭakāriṇam ,
pataṁgo'gnimivāsādya sāmātyo na bhaviṣyasi.
52. pradharṣayan mahābāhum kṛṣṇam akliṣṭakāriṇam
pataṅgaḥ agnim iva āsādya sa-amātyaḥ na bhaviṣyasi
52. mahābāhum akliṣṭakāriṇam kṛṣṇam pradharṣayan
agnim āsādya pataṅgaḥ iva sa-amātyaḥ na bhaviṣyasi
52. By assailing the mighty-armed Kṛṣṇa, who performs deeds effortlessly (akliṣṭakāriṇam), you, along with your ministers, will not survive, just as a moth perishes upon approaching a fire.
