Yudhiṣṭhira said: "Grandfather, in the Vedic (scriptures), a person is said to possess a lifespan of a hundred years and a hundred powers. Why then do people die, even children?"
आयुष्मान्केन भवति स्वल्पायुर्वापि मानवः ।
केन वा लभते कीर्तिं केन वा लभते श्रियम् ॥२॥

2. āyuṣmānkena bhavati svalpāyurvāpi mānavaḥ ,

By what means does a human become long-lived, or conversely, short-lived? By what does one achieve renown, and by what does one attain prosperity?
तपसा ब्रह्मचर्येण जपैर्होमैस्तथौषधैः ।
जन्मना यदि वाचारात्तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥३॥

3. tapasā brahmacaryeṇa japairhomaistathauṣadhaiḥ ,
janmanā yadi vācārāttanme brūhi pitāmaha.

Grandfather, tell me, is it through ascetic practice (tapas), celibacy (brahmacarya), chanting (japa), Vedic fire rituals (homa), or medicines? Or is it by birth, or by one's conduct (ācāra)?
भीष्म उवाच ।
अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि यन्मां त्वमनुपृच्छसि ।
अल्पायुर्येन भवति दीर्घायुर्वापि मानवः ॥४॥
अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि यन्मां त्वमनुपृच्छसि ।
अल्पायुर्येन भवति दीर्घायुर्वापि मानवः ॥४॥
4. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atra te vartayiṣyāmi yanmāṁ tvamanupṛcchasi ,
alpāyuryena bhavati dīrghāyurvāpi mānavaḥ.

Bhīṣma said: "Regarding that which you ask of me, I shall now explain here how a human being becomes short-lived or long-lived."
येन वा लभते कीर्तिं येन वा लभते श्रियम् ।
यथा च वर्तन्पुरुषः श्रेयसा संप्रयुज्यते ॥५॥

By which one gains fame and by which one gains prosperity; the way a person conducts himself, he becomes associated with welfare.
आचाराल्लभते ह्यायुराचाराल्लभते श्रियम् ।
आचारात्कीर्तिमाप्नोति पुरुषः प्रेत्य चेह च ॥६॥

6. ācārāllabhate hyāyurācārāllabhate śriyam ,
ācārātkīrtimāpnoti puruṣaḥ pretya ceha ca.

ācārāt śriyam labhate,

Through proper conduct (ācāra), one obtains longevity, and through proper conduct, one obtains prosperity. A person attains fame through proper conduct both after death and in this world.
दुराचारो हि पुरुषो नेहायुर्विन्दते महत् ।
त्रसन्ति यस्माद्भूतानि तथा परिभवन्ति च ॥७॥

7. durācāro hi puruṣo nehāyurvindate mahat ,
trasanti yasmādbhūtāni tathā paribhavanti ca.

durācāraḥ hi puruṣaḥ na iha āyuḥ vindate mahat
trasanti yasmāt bhūtāni tathā paribhavanti ca

durācāraḥ puruṣaḥ iha mahat āyuḥ na vindate.

7.
Indeed, a person of bad conduct does not attain great longevity in this world. This is because living beings fear him and also despise him.
तस्मात्कुर्यादिहाचारं य इच्छेद्भूतिमात्मनः ।
अपि पापशरीरस्य आचारो हन्त्यलक्षणम् ॥८॥

8. tasmātkuryādihācāraṁ ya icchedbhūtimātmanaḥ ,
api pāpaśarīrasya ācāro hantyalakṣaṇam.

tasmāt kuryāt iha ācāram yaḥ icchet bhūtim
ātmanaḥ api pāpaśarīrasya ācāraḥ hanti alakṣaṇam
ātmanaḥ api pāpaśarīrasya ācāraḥ hanti alakṣaṇam

tasmāt yaḥ ātmanaḥ bhūtim icchet,
saḥ iha ācāram kuryāt.
api pāpaśarīrasya ācāraḥ alakṣaṇam hanti
saḥ iha ācāram kuryāt.
api pāpaśarīrasya ācāraḥ alakṣaṇam hanti
8.
Therefore, whoever desires his own welfare (ātman) should practice proper conduct (ācāra) in this world. Even for a person with a sinful body, proper conduct (ācāra) destroys inauspicious signs.
आचारलक्षणो धर्मः सन्तश्चाचारलक्षणाः ।
साधूनां च यथा वृत्तमेतदाचारलक्षणम् ॥९॥
साधूनां च यथा वृत्तमेतदाचारलक्षणम् ॥९॥
9. ācāralakṣaṇo dharmaḥ santaścācāralakṣaṇāḥ ,
sādhūnāṁ ca yathā vṛttametadācāralakṣaṇam.

ācāralakṣaṇaḥ dharmaḥ santaḥ ca ācāralakṣaṇāḥ

Good conduct defines the natural law (dharma); virtuous individuals are themselves characterized by good conduct. The behavior of noble persons is indeed the very essence of good conduct.
अप्यदृष्टं श्रुतं वापि पुरुषं धर्मचारिणम् ।
भूतिकर्माणि कुर्वाणं तं जनाः कुर्वते प्रियम् ॥१०॥

10. apyadṛṣṭaṁ śrutaṁ vāpi puruṣaṁ dharmacāriṇam ,
bhūtikarmāṇi kurvāṇaṁ taṁ janāḥ kurvate priyam.
bhūtikarmāṇi kurvāṇaṁ taṁ janāḥ kurvate priyam.
10.
api adṛṣṭam śrutam vā api puruṣam dharmacāriṇam
bhūtikarmāṇi kurvāṇam tam janāḥ kurvate priyam
bhūtikarmāṇi kurvāṇam tam janāḥ kurvate priyam

janāḥ adṛṣṭam vā śrutam api api dharmacāriṇam
bhūtikarmāṇi kurvāṇam tam puruṣam priyam kurvate
bhūtikarmāṇi kurvāṇam tam puruṣam priyam kurvate
10.
People hold dear even a person who is unseen or unheard, provided he follows natural law (dharma) and performs actions conducive to prosperity.
ये नास्तिका निष्क्रियाश्च गुरुशास्त्रातिलङ्घिनः ।
अधर्मज्ञा दुराचारास्ते भवन्ति गतायुषः ॥११॥

11. ye nāstikā niṣkriyāśca guruśāstrātilaṅghinaḥ ,
adharmajñā durācārāste bhavanti gatāyuṣaḥ.

ye nāstikāḥ niṣkriyāḥ ca guruśāstrātilaṅghinaḥ
adharmajñāḥ durācārāḥ te bhavanti gatāyuṣaḥ

ye nāstikāḥ ca niṣkriyāḥ guruśāstrātilaṅghinaḥ
adharmajñāḥ durācārāḥ te gatāyuṣaḥ bhavanti
adharmajñāḥ durācārāḥ te gatāyuṣaḥ bhavanti
11.
Those who are atheists, inactive in good deeds, who transgress the teachings of gurus and scriptures, who are ignorant of natural law (dharma), and who practice bad conduct - they become short-lived.
विशीला भिन्नमर्यादा नित्यं संकीर्णमैथुनाः ।
अल्पायुषो भवन्तीह नरा निरयगामिनः ॥१२॥

12. viśīlā bhinnamaryādā nityaṁ saṁkīrṇamaithunāḥ ,
alpāyuṣo bhavantīha narā nirayagāminaḥ.
alpāyuṣo bhavantīha narā nirayagāminaḥ.

viśīlāḥ bhinnamaryādāḥ nityam saṃkīrṇamaithunāḥ
alpāyuṣaḥ bhavanti iha narāḥ nirayagāminaḥ

iha viśīlāḥ bhinnamaryādāḥ nityam saṃkīrṇamaithunāḥ

Men who are of immoral character, who transgress established boundaries, and who constantly engage in impure sexual acts, become short-lived in this world and are destined for hell.
सर्वलक्षणहीनोऽपि समुदाचारवान्नरः ।
श्रद्दधानोऽनसूयश्च शतं वर्षाणि जीवति ॥१३॥
श्रद्दधानोऽनसूयश्च शतं वर्षाणि जीवति ॥१३॥
13. sarvalakṣaṇahīno'pi samudācāravānnaraḥ ,
śraddadhāno'nasūyaśca śataṁ varṣāṇi jīvati.

sarvalakṣaṇahīnaḥ api samudācāravān naraḥ
śraddadhānaḥ anasūyuḥ ca śatam varṣāṇi jīvati

naraḥ sarvalakṣaṇahīnaḥ api samudācāravān
śraddadhānaḥ ca anasūyuḥ śatam varṣāṇi jīvati

13.
A person, even if devoid of all auspicious physical characteristics, but who possesses good conduct, is full of faith (śraddhā), and free from envy, lives for a hundred years.
अक्रोधनः सत्यवादी भूतानामविहिंसकः ।
अनसूयुरजिह्मश्च शतं वर्षाणि जीवति ॥१४॥

14. akrodhanaḥ satyavādī bhūtānāmavihiṁsakaḥ ,
anasūyurajihmaśca śataṁ varṣāṇi jīvati.

akrodhanaḥ satyavādī bhūtānām avihiṃsakaḥ
anasūyuḥ ajihmaḥ ca śatam varṣāṇi jīvati

akrodhanaḥ satyavādī bhūtānām avihiṃsakaḥ
anasūyuḥ ca ajihmaḥ (saḥ) śatam varṣāṇi jīvati

14.
A person who is not prone to anger, speaks the truth, does not harm living beings, is free from envy, and is honest, lives for a hundred years.
लोष्टमर्दी तृणच्छेदी नखखादी च यो नरः ।
नित्योच्छिष्टः संकुसुको नेहायुर्विन्दते महत् ॥१५॥

15. loṣṭamardī tṛṇacchedī nakhakhādī ca yo naraḥ ,
nityocchiṣṭaḥ saṁkusuko nehāyurvindate mahat.
nityocchiṣṭaḥ saṁkusuko nehāyurvindate mahat.

loṣṭamardī tṛṇacchedī nakhakhādī ca yaḥ naraḥ nitya
ucchiṣṭaḥ saṃkusukaḥ na iha āyuḥ vindate mahat
ucchiṣṭaḥ saṃkusukaḥ na iha āyuḥ vindate mahat
15.
yaḥ naraḥ loṣṭamardī tṛṇacchedī nakhakhādī ca nitya ucchiṣṭaḥ saṃkusukaḥ,
(saḥ) iha mahat āyuḥ na vindate
(saḥ) iha mahat āyuḥ na vindate
15.
That person who crushes clods of earth, tears at grass, and bites their nails, who is always unclean and prone to complaining, does not attain a great lifespan in this world.
ब्राह्मे मुहूर्ते बुध्येत धर्मार्थौ चानुचिन्तयेत् ।
उत्थायाचम्य तिष्ठेत पूर्वां संध्यां कृताञ्जलिः ॥१६॥

16. brāhme muhūrte budhyeta dharmārthau cānucintayet ,
utthāyācamya tiṣṭheta pūrvāṁ saṁdhyāṁ kṛtāñjaliḥ.
utthāyācamya tiṣṭheta pūrvāṁ saṁdhyāṁ kṛtāñjaliḥ.
16.
brāhme muhūrte budhyeta dharmārthau ca anucintayet
utthāya ācamya tiṣṭheta pūrvām saṃdhyām kṛtāñjaliḥ
utthāya ācamya tiṣṭheta pūrvām saṃdhyām kṛtāñjaliḥ
16.
(janaḥ) brāhme muhūrte budhyeta ca dharmārthau anucintayet
(saḥ) utthāya ācamya kṛtāñjaliḥ pūrvām saṃdhyām tiṣṭheta
(saḥ) utthāya ācamya kṛtāñjaliḥ pūrvām saṃdhyām tiṣṭheta
16.
One should awaken during the brāhma muhūrta (the auspicious hour before dawn) and contemplate the goals of righteousness (dharma) and material prosperity. Having risen and performed ritual sipping, one should stand with clasped hands for the morning twilight ritual.
एवमेवापरां संध्यां समुपासीत वाग्यतः ।
नेक्षेतादित्यमुद्यन्तं नास्तं यान्तं कदाचन ॥१७॥
नेक्षेतादित्यमुद्यन्तं नास्तं यान्तं कदाचन ॥१७॥
17. evamevāparāṁ saṁdhyāṁ samupāsīta vāgyataḥ ,
nekṣetādityamudyantaṁ nāstaṁ yāntaṁ kadācana.
nekṣetādityamudyantaṁ nāstaṁ yāntaṁ kadācana.

evam eva aparām sandhyām samupāsīta vāgyataḥ na
īkṣeta ādityam udyantam na astam yāntam kadācana
īkṣeta ādityam udyantam na astam yāntam kadācana

Likewise, one should observe the other twilight ritual (sandhyā), controlling one's speech. One should never gaze upon the rising sun, nor upon the setting sun.
ऋषयो दीर्घसंध्यत्वाद्दीर्घमायुरवाप्नुवन् ।
तस्मात्तिष्ठेत्सदा पूर्वां पश्चिमां चैव वाग्यतः ॥१८॥
तस्मात्तिष्ठेत्सदा पूर्वां पश्चिमां चैव वाग्यतः ॥१८॥
18. ṛṣayo dīrghasaṁdhyatvāddīrghamāyuravāpnuvan ,
tasmāttiṣṭhetsadā pūrvāṁ paścimāṁ caiva vāgyataḥ.
tasmāttiṣṭhetsadā pūrvāṁ paścimāṁ caiva vāgyataḥ.
18.
ṛṣayaḥ dīrghasandhyatvāt dīrgham āyuḥ avāpnuvan
tasmāt tiṣṭhet sadā pūrvām paścimām ca eva vāgyataḥ
tasmāt tiṣṭhet sadā pūrvām paścimām ca eva vāgyataḥ
18.
Sages (ṛṣi) attained long life due to their prolonged observance of the twilight ritual (sandhyā). Therefore, one should always remain, controlling one's speech, for both the morning and evening twilight rituals.
ये च पूर्वामुपासन्ते द्विजाः संध्यां न पश्चिमाम् ।
सर्वांस्तान्धार्मिको राजा शूद्रकर्माणि कारयेत् ॥१९॥

19. ye ca pūrvāmupāsante dvijāḥ saṁdhyāṁ na paścimām ,
sarvāṁstāndhārmiko rājā śūdrakarmāṇi kārayet.

ye ca pūrvām upāsante dvijāḥ sandhyām na paścimām
sarvān tān dhārmikaḥ rājā śūdrakarmāṇi kārayet
sarvān tān dhārmikaḥ rājā śūdrakarmāṇi kārayet
19.
And those twice-born (dvija) who observe the morning twilight ritual (sandhyā) but not the evening one, a king dedicated to natural law (dharma) should compel all of them to perform the duties of a śūdra (śūdra).
परदारा न गन्तव्याः सर्ववर्णेषु कर्हिचित् ।
न हीदृशमनायुष्यं लोके किंचन विद्यते ।
यादृशं पुरुषस्येह परदारोपसेवनम् ॥२०॥
न हीदृशमनायुष्यं लोके किंचन विद्यते ।
यादृशं पुरुषस्येह परदारोपसेवनम् ॥२०॥
20. paradārā na gantavyāḥ sarvavarṇeṣu karhicit ,
na hīdṛśamanāyuṣyaṁ loke kiṁcana vidyate ,
yādṛśaṁ puruṣasyeha paradāropasevanam.
na hīdṛśamanāyuṣyaṁ loke kiṁcana vidyate ,
yādṛśaṁ puruṣasyeha paradāropasevanam.
20.
paradārāḥ na gantavyāḥ sarvavarṇeṣu
karhicit na hi īdṛśam anāyuṣyam
loke kim cana vidyate yādṛśam
puruṣasya iha paradāropasevanam
karhicit na hi īdṛśam anāyuṣyam
loke kim cana vidyate yādṛśam
puruṣasya iha paradāropasevanam
20.
The wives of others should never be approached, regardless of social class. For indeed, there is nothing in this world that shortens life as much as a man's sexual intercourse with another's wife.
प्रसाधनं च केशानामञ्जनं दन्तधावनम् ।
पूर्वाह्ण एव कुर्वीत देवतानां च पूजनम् ॥२१॥

21. prasādhanaṁ ca keśānāmañjanaṁ dantadhāvanam ,
pūrvāhṇa eva kurvīta devatānāṁ ca pūjanam.

One should perform the grooming of hair, the application of collyrium, cleaning of teeth, and the worship of deities in the forenoon itself.

One should not discharge excrement in a field or near a village. Furthermore, one should never relieve oneself (both urine and excrement) in water.

One should always eat, facing east, with controlled speech, and without reviling the food. One should mentally sprinkle a portion (as an offering) and, having eaten, should touch water while invoking "agni" (fire).

One should never step on husks, hair, ashes, or skull fragments. Furthermore, one should completely avoid another's personal space by keeping a distance.

One should eat with wet feet, but one should not go to sleep with wet feet. Indeed, a person who eats with wet feet lives for a hundred years.

One who is ritually impure (after eating) should never gaze upon these three radiant entities: the sun, the moon, and all the constellations.

Indeed, the vital breaths (prāṇāḥ) of a young man rise upwards when an elder approaches. By rising up to greet and showing reverence, one regains those vital breaths.

One should greet elders and offer them a seat. One should sit near them with folded hands, and follow behind them when they depart.

One should not sit on a broken seat and should avoid a broken metal vessel. One should not eat wearing a single garment, nor should one bathe naked. One should certainly not sleep naked, and one should not lie down while impure from eating.

One who is impure from eating should not touch their head, for all vital energies (prāṇa) reside there. One should avoid hair-pulling and blows to the head.

One should never scratch the head with both hands. Nor should one frequently bathe the head, for then one's lifespan will not be diminished.

A person who has bathed their head with oil should not touch any part of their body. They should also not eat sesame paste. By following these rules, one obtains a long life.

Regarding this (matter), those who know the ancient lore (purāvidaḥ) recite verses (gāthāḥ) that were proclaimed by Yama: "I sever his life (āyus), and likewise I take away his progeny."

यश्चानध्यायकालेऽपि मोहादभ्यस्यति द्विजः ।
तस्माद्युक्तोऽप्यनध्याये नाधीयीत कदाचन ॥४०॥

The twice-born (dvija) who speaks while ritually impure (ucchiṣṭa) and also engages in sacred study (svādhyāya), and who, even during a period forbidden for study (anadhyāyakāla), practices due to delusion (moha) – for this reason, even if otherwise prepared, one should never study during such a forbidden period.

Those who urinate facing the sun, the wind, a cow, or a twice-born (dvija), or upon a road, will have their lifespan shortened.

One should pass both urine and feces facing north during the day, and facing south during the night. In this way, one's lifespan is not diminished.

43.
A person desiring a long lifespan should not disregard three 'weak' ones: a twice-born (brāhmaṇa), a warrior (kṣatriya), and a snake. For all three are truly venomous.
दहत्याशीविषः क्रुद्धो यावत्पश्यति चक्षुषा ।
क्षत्रियोऽपि दहेत्क्रुद्धो यावत्स्पृशति तेजसा ॥४४॥

An enraged venomous serpent burns [with its venom] as long as it gazes with its eye. Similarly, an enraged warrior (kṣatriya) can burn [others] as long as he touches [them] with his fiery energy.

तस्मादेतत्त्रयं यत्नादुपसेवेत पण्डितः ॥४५॥

Indeed, a brāhmaṇa can destroy a family (kula) through contemplation (dhyāna) and even by a mere glance. Therefore, a wise person (paṇḍita) should carefully guard these three (mind, speech, and body).
गुरुणा वैरनिर्बन्धो न कर्तव्यः कदाचन ।
अनुमान्यः प्रसाद्यश्च गुरुः क्रुद्धो युधिष्ठिर ॥४६॥

A persistent enmity with a teacher (guru) should never be established. An angered teacher (guru) must be persuaded and appeased, O Yudhiṣṭhira.

गुरुनिन्दा दहत्यायुर्मनुष्याणां न संशयः ॥४७॥

47. samyaṅmithyāpravṛtte'pi vartitavyaṁ gurāviha ,

Even if a teacher (guru) behaves wrongly, one should still act properly towards him in this world. There is no doubt that criticism of a teacher (guru) diminishes the lifespan of human beings.

Urination should be done far from the dwelling, and the washing of feet far away. Similarly, the disposal of food remnants should also be done at a distance by one who desires his own well-being.

One should not travel too early (before dawn), nor too late in the evening (after dusk), nor at noon. One should not go with unknown people, nor alone, nor with those of low status.

वृद्धाय भारतप्ताय गर्भिण्यै दुर्बलाय च ॥५०॥

The right of way should be given to a brahmin, to cows, and to kings. Also (it should be given) to the elderly, to those burdened, to a pregnant woman, and to the weak.

One should perform clockwise circumambulation (pradakṣiṇa) around well-known trees. And one should always treat all crossroads with clockwise circumambulation.

One should never frequent crossroads at midday, during the night, or at midnight. Similarly, one should avoid them at both twilight periods (dawn and dusk).

A student (brahmacārin) should not wear sandals or clothes that have been used by others. He should always maintain strict adherence to his vows and should not step on another's foot with his own.

One should always observe the vow of celibacy (brahmacarya) on the new moon day, the full moon day, the fourteenth day of both fortnights, and the eighth day of all fortnights.

One should not eat meat unnecessarily, nor should one engage in slander. He should avoid abuse, censure, and malicious tale-bearing.

One should not be a tormentor, nor speak cruelly, nor should one assail another from a position of inferiority. One should not utter such harsh, condemnation-provoking speech by which another person might be agitated.

Word-arrows shoot forth from the mouth; those struck by them grieve day and night. Such arrows penetrate the vital points of another. Therefore, a wise person should not unleash them upon others.
रोहते सायकैर्विद्धं वनं परशुना हतम् ।
वाचा दुरुक्तं बीभत्सं न संरोहति वाक्क्षतम् ॥५८॥

A forest, even if pierced by arrows or cut down by an axe, grows back. But a wound from words (vākkṣatam), harsh and offensive, does not heal.

रूपद्रविणहीनांश्च सत्त्वहीनांश्च नाक्षिपेत् ॥५९॥

One should not insult those who are deficient in limbs, or possess extra limbs, or are devoid of knowledge, or are elderly; nor those lacking beauty, wealth, or inner strength (sattva).
नास्तिक्यं वेदनिन्दां च देवतानां च कुत्सनम् ।
द्वेषस्तम्भाभिमानांश्च तैक्ष्ण्यं च परिवर्जयेत् ॥६०॥

One should avoid atheism, condemnation of the Vedas, and defamation of deities. Furthermore, hatred, stubbornness, arrogance, and harshness should be completely shunned.
परस्य दण्डं नोद्यच्छेत्क्रोद्धो नैनं निपातयेत् ।
अन्यत्र पुत्राच्छिष्याद्वा शिक्षार्थं ताडनं स्मृतम् ॥६१॥

One should not raise a rod against another, nor should one strike him in anger. Chastisement for the purpose of instruction is traditionally remembered (smṛtam) as permissible only for a son or a disciple.

One should not revile brahmins (brāhmaṇa), nor should one prognosticate by (mentioning) the constellations. One should not declare the lunar day (tithi) of the fortnight, for by observing these, one's life (āyus) will not be harmed.

After urinating and defecating, or after having stepped onto a street, one should perform foot-washing before (Vedic) recitation (svādhyāya) and eating.

The gods (deva) ordained three purifiers for brahmins (brāhmaṇa): the unseen, that which is cleansed by water, and that which is praised by speech.

आत्मार्थं न प्रकर्तव्यं देवार्थं तु प्रकल्पयेत् ॥६५॥

Samyāva, kṛsara, meat, śaṣkulī, and pāyasa should not be prepared for one's own sake (ātman); rather, one should prepare them for the sake of the deities.

वाग्यतो दन्तकाष्ठं च नित्यमेव समाचरेत् ।
न चाभ्युदितशायी स्यात्प्रायश्चित्ती तथा भवेत् ॥६६॥

One should constantly attend to the sacred fire (agni) and always offer alms. With controlled speech, one should always use a tooth-stick. One should not remain sleeping after sunrise; otherwise, one would become liable for expiation.

Having risen, one should first and foremost greet one's mother and father. Or, one should similarly greet one's preceptor (ācārya), and thereby attain a long life.

One should always perform purification rituals while facing north and maintaining full concentration.

Without first performing the worship of deities, one should never go anywhere else, except, however, to a teacher (guru), an elder, a righteous person (dhārmika), or a wise person.

Intelligent people should not look at a dirty mirror. And one should never approach an unknown woman, or a pregnant woman (for intimacy).

One should not sleep with their head facing north, nor similarly with their head facing west. However, a learned person should sleep with their head facing east, or alternatively, facing south.

One should not sleep on a broken or torn bed, nor in a concealed place, nor entangled (with others inappropriately), nor ever lying diagonally.

One should never bathe naked, nor at night. And after bathing, a discerning person should not rub their limbs (too vigorously).

स्रजश्च नावकर्षेत न बहिर्धारयेत च ॥७५॥

75.
One should not anoint oneself without having bathed. After bathing, one should not shake out (dry) their garments. Rather, a person should always wear garments while they are still wet. Furthermore, one should not pull off garlands, nor wear them outside.
रक्तमाल्यं न धार्यं स्याच्छुक्लं धार्यं तु पण्डितैः ।
वर्जयित्वा तु कमलं तथा कुवलयं विभो ॥७६॥

Red garlands should not be worn, but white ones should be worn by the wise. This rule, however, excludes the lotus and the blue water lily, O lord.

काञ्चनी चैव या माला न सा दुष्यति कर्हिचित् ।
स्नातस्य वर्णकं नित्यमार्द्रं दद्याद्विशां पते ॥७७॥

77.
O lord of the people, a red mark or garment should be placed on the head, and similarly, an ornament of forest origin. Moreover, any golden garland never becomes impure. One should always offer moist fragrant paste to a person who has just bathed.

A wise person should not wear garments improperly (e.g., inside out or back to front). Similarly, a garment worn by another should not be worn, nor should an incomplete or damaged one.

O best of men, a different garment should be worn for sleeping. Another kind (of garment) for the streets, and yet another indeed for the worship of the gods.

पृथगेवानुलिम्पेत केसरेण च बुद्धिमान् ॥८०॥

A wise person should anoint themselves separately with priyaṅgu, sandalwood, bael, tagara, and saffron.

One should undertake a fast (upavāsa), having bathed, purified, and adorned. On all festive occasions, one should always remain a celibate student (brahmacārī).
नालीढया परिहतं भक्षयीत कदाचन ।

One should never eat food that has been licked (by another) or rejected. Likewise, one should not merely look at food from which the best portion has not been offered (to others), nor should one fail to make an offering.
न संनिकृष्टो मेधावी नाशुचिर्न च सत्सु च ।
प्रतिषिद्धान्न धर्मेषु भक्षान्भुञ्जीत पृष्ठतः ॥८३॥

83.
A wise person (medhāvī) should not eat while being too close (to the food), nor while impure, nor in the presence of good people. He should not eat forbidden foods in the context of food-related religious duties (dharma), nor secretly.
पिप्पलं च वटं चैव शणशाकं तथैव च ।
उदुम्बरं न खादेच्च भवार्थी पुरुषोत्तमः ॥८४॥

A superior man (puruṣottama) who desires welfare should not eat pippala (holy fig), vaṭa (banyan), hemp-greens, or udumbara (cluster fig).

One should avoid goat meat, beef, and peacock meat. Similarly, one should avoid dried meat and any meat that is stale.

A learned person should not eat salt from their hand, nor should they eat during the nights. One should not eat curds mixed with roasted flour, and should avoid meat eaten without purpose.

Indeed, one should not eat food that contains hair. Similarly, one should not partake in the ancestor worship (śrāddha) of others. One should eat in the evening and morning, but not in between these times, remaining self-controlled.

भूमौ सदैव नाश्नीयान्नानासीनो न शब्दवत् ॥८८॥

One should eat with controlled speech, not wearing only one garment, and never while reclining. One should always avoid eating directly on the ground. One should eat while seated, and not noisily.

O lord of the people, an intelligent person should first offer food with water to guests and only then partake of food. A person whose mind is distracted, however, should not eat.

विषं हालाहलं भुङ्क्ते योऽप्रदाय सुहृज्जने ॥९०॥

O lord of men, one who eats the same food in a common line without offering it to his well-wishers, indeed consumes deadly poison (hālāhalam).

Drinking water, rice pudding, ghee, curds, barley meal, and honey - the remnants of these, once set aside, should certainly not be offered to anyone.

O tiger among men, one who is eating should certainly not harbor any doubt. And indeed, curds should not be consumed as an after-drink by one who desires prosperity (bhava).

Having performed the ritual sipping of water (ācamana) and drained water with the hand, one should then pour water over the big toe of the right foot.

A person, composed and skilled in the practice, who places his hand on his head and touches the fire, attains pre-eminence among his relatives.

Having touched the vital airs (prāṇas) with water and the navel with the palm of the hand, one should indeed then set forth, but not with a wet hand.

The space between the thumb and index finger is declared to be the brāhma tīrtha (sacred zone for brahmins). However, here, the area behind the little finger is called the deva-tīrtha (sacred zone for the gods).

O Bhārata, one should perform ancestral rites properly by using the middle part between the thumb and the index finger, after having touched water.

One should never speak slander of others or anything unpleasant. A person desiring prosperity should not generate any anger (manyu).

One should not desire conversation with outcasts, and should also avoid seeing them. One should not associate with them; by doing so, one obtains a long life.

One should not engage in sexual intercourse during the day, nor with a maiden, nor with an unchaste woman. One should also not engage with an unbathed woman; by observing these rules, one obtains a long life.

When a ritual is about to be performed, a person, having sipped water at their own designated pure spot (tīrtha), and having drunk water three times and wiped their mouth twice, becomes ritually purified.

And a person, having touched their sense organs once and sprinkled water three times, should perform the ancestral rites and divine rites through actions (karma) prescribed by the Vedas.

O Kaurava, listen from me concerning the purification (śauca) that pertains to brahmins. And likewise, (one should obtain purification) by speaking what is prescribed and beneficial at the beginning and end of meals.
सर्वशौचेषु ब्राह्मेण तीर्थेन समुपस्पृशेत् ।
निष्ठीव्य तु तथा क्षुत्वा स्पृश्यापो हि शुचिर्भवेत् ॥१०४॥

In all acts of purification (śauca), one should perform ablution using the brahminical method (brāhmaṇa tīrtha). Indeed, after spitting, or similarly after sneezing, one should touch water to become ritually pure.
वृद्धो ज्ञातिस्तथा मित्रं दरिद्रो यो भवेदपि ।
गृहे वासयितव्यास्ते धन्यमायुष्यमेव च ॥१०५॥

Old relatives, friends, and even those who may be poor, should be given residence in one's home. This certainly brings blessings and longevity.

Pigeons, parrots, and mynas are considered auspicious in a home. Similarly, these and bats do not bring misfortune or sin (pāpa) to houses.

When ominous birds, vultures, (kapota) doves, and bees take residence there, then one should certainly perform a pacification (śānti) ritual.

One should not approach forbidden women (agamyāḥ), nor the wives of kings and friends. Similarly, O Yudhiṣṭhira, [one should avoid improper relations with the womenfolk] of physicians, children, elders, and servants.

O Bhārata, after having a daughter, she should be given in marriage to an intelligent man from a respectable family. Sons should be settled, and servants should be acquired from other families.

नक्षत्रे न च कुर्वीत यस्मिञ्जातो भवेन्नरः ।
न प्रोष्ठपदयोः कार्यं तथाग्नेये च भारत ॥११९॥

O Bhārata, after taking a ritual head-bath, one should then perform rites dedicated to the gods and ancestors. However, one should not perform these rites in the specific lunar mansion (nakṣatra) in which one was born. Similarly, these rites should not be performed during the Proṣṭhapada lunar mansions nor in the Agneya (Kṛttikā) lunar mansion.
दारुणेषु च सर्वेषु प्रत्यहं च विवर्जयेत् ।

One should not speak ill of others, nor of oneself. Indeed, O best of Bharatas, such blame is not conducive to one's intrinsic nature (dharma).

One should avoid an aged woman, and indeed, a renunciate woman; similarly, one should also avoid a woman devoted to another husband. Furthermore, one should shun a woman of excessively dark complexion and a woman belonging to a higher social class (varṇa).

A discerning person should not marry a woman of ignoble or improper birth. You should not marry a woman who is pale or afflicted with leprosy.

One should avoid a woman born in a family afflicted with epilepsy, as well as a woman of degraded status. And, O lord of men (manujeśvara), one should avoid a woman born in a family with vitiligo - these three types.

She who is endowed with auspicious features and is praised for her good signs, who is charming and beautiful to behold - her you, your honor (bhavān), should marry.

One should carefully kindle the sacred fires and perform all those well-ordained rituals that are declared by the Brahmins in the Vedas.

One should not harbor jealousy (īrṣyā) towards wives, and wives should be protected in every way. Jealousy is detrimental to longevity, therefore one should abandon jealousy.

Daytime sleep, and likewise sleeping until after sunrise, is detrimental to longevity. Similarly, those who sleep at dawn or at night while in a state of ritual impurity from having eaten (ucchiṣṭa) also shorten their life.

Adultery (pāradārya) is detrimental to longevity, and similarly, the ritual impurity (ucchiṣṭatā) from a barber. O Bhārata, these should certainly not be practiced at all, nor should one cultivate their repetition.

During twilight (sandhyā), one should not eat, nor bathe, nor evacuate feces. One should be self-controlled at that time and should not engage in any activity.

O best of men, the instruction (anuśāsanam) of mother, father, and teachers must certainly be followed; whether it is beneficial or even harmful, it should not be deliberated upon.

O king (narādhipa), effort must be made in the science of archery (dhanurveda) and in the Vedas. And on the backs of elephants and horses, and in charioteering, you must indeed be diligent, O supreme ruler (rājendra)! A diligent person prospers in happiness.

O Bhārata (descendant of Bharata), you must also understand the science of logic (yuktiśāstra) and the science of grammar (śabdaśāstra). And O king (narādhipa), the science of music (gandharvaśāstra) and the (sixty-four) arts (kalāḥ) must also be thoroughly known.

Relatives, kinsmen, and friends should always be honored. Vedic rituals (yajñas) should be performed according to one's capacity, along with various gifts. Thereafter, O king, one should resort to the forest (araṇyam).

Indeed, among all traditions, good conduct is declared to be the best. The natural law (dharma) originates from good conduct, and from this natural law (dharma), longevity greatly increases.
