अष्टावक्र उवाच ।
तथास्तु साधयिष्यामि तत्र यास्याम्यसंशयम् ।
यत्र त्वं वदसे साधो भवान्भवतु सत्यवाक् ॥१॥
1. aṣṭāvakra uvāca ,
tathāstu sādhayiṣyāmi tatra yāsyāmyasaṁśayam ,
yatra tvaṁ vadase sādho bhavānbhavatu satyavāk.

1. Aṣṭāvakra said, 'So be it! I will certainly accomplish it and go there, just as you say, O good one. May you be truthful!'
भीष्म उवाच ।
ततोऽगच्छत्स भगवानुत्तरामुत्तमां दिशम् ।
हिमवन्तं गिरिश्रेष्ठं सिद्धचारणसेवितम् ॥२॥
2. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tato'gacchatsa bhagavānuttarāmuttamāṁ diśam ,
himavantaṁ giriśreṣṭhaṁ siddhacāraṇasevitam.
2. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca | tataḥ agacchat saḥ bhagavān uttarām
uttamām diśam | himavantam giriśreṣṭham siddhacāraṇasevitam
2. Bhīṣma said: 'Then that revered one went to the northern and most excellent direction, to the Himālaya, the foremost of mountains, which is frequented by Siddhas and Cāraṇas.'
स गत्वा द्विजशार्दूलो हिमवन्तं महागिरिम् ।
अभ्यगच्छन्नदीं पुण्यां बाहुदां धर्मदायिनीम् ॥३॥
3. sa gatvā dvijaśārdūlo himavantaṁ mahāgirim ,
abhyagacchannadīṁ puṇyāṁ bāhudāṁ dharmadāyinīm.
3. saḥ gatvā dvijaśārdūlaḥ himavantam mahāgirim |
abhyagacchat nadīm puṇyām bāhudām dharmadāyinīm
3. Having gone to the Himālaya, that great mountain, he, the foremost among the twice-born, approached the sacred Bāhudā river, which bestows merit (dharma).
अशोके विमले तीर्थे स्नात्वा तर्प्य च देवताः ।
तत्र वासाय शयने कौश्ये सुखमुवास ह ॥४॥
4. aśoke vimale tīrthe snātvā tarpya ca devatāḥ ,
tatra vāsāya śayane kauśye sukhamuvāsa ha.

4. Having bathed in the pure, immaculate sacred bathing place (tīrtha) named Aśoka and offered oblations to the deities, he comfortably resided there on a silken bed.
ततो रात्र्यां व्यतीतायां प्रातरुत्थाय स द्विजः ।
स्नात्वा प्रादुश्चकाराग्निं हुत्वा चैव विधानतः ॥५॥
5. tato rātryāṁ vyatītāyāṁ prātarutthāya sa dvijaḥ ,
snātvā prāduścakārāgniṁ hutvā caiva vidhānataḥ.
5. tataḥ rātryām vyatītāyām prātaḥ utthāya saḥ dvijaḥ
snātvā prāduḥ cakāra agnim hutvā ca eva vidhānataḥ

5. Then, after the night had passed, that brahmin (dvija) rose in the morning, bathed, and kindled the fire, offering oblations strictly according to the prescribed rites.
रुद्राणीकूपमासाद्य ह्रदे तत्र समाश्वसत् ।
विश्रान्तश्च समुत्थाय कैलासमभितो ययौ ॥६॥
6. rudrāṇīkūpamāsādya hrade tatra samāśvasat ,
viśrāntaśca samutthāya kailāsamabhito yayau.

6. Having reached Rudrāṇī's well, he rested there in the lake. And having completely refreshed himself, he rose and proceeded towards Mount Kailāsa.
सोऽपश्यत्काञ्चनद्वारं दीप्यमानमिव श्रिया ।
मन्दाकिनीं च नलिनीं धनदस्य महात्मनः ॥७॥
7. so'paśyatkāñcanadvāraṁ dīpyamānamiva śriyā ,
mandākinīṁ ca nalinīṁ dhanadasya mahātmanaḥ.
7. saḥ apaśyat kāñcanadvāram dīpyamānam iva śriyā
mandākinīm ca nalinīm dhanadasya mahātmanaḥ
7. saḥ śriyā iva dīpyamānam kāñcanadvāram ca
mahātmanaḥ dhanadasya mandākinīm nalinīm ca apaśyat
7. He saw a golden gate, shining as if with splendor, and also the Mandākinī river and a lotus pond belonging to the great-souled Kubera, the bestower of wealth.
अथ ते राक्षसाः सर्वे येऽभिरक्षन्ति पद्मिनीम् ।
प्रत्युत्थिता भगवन्तं मणिभद्रपुरोगमाः ॥८॥
8. atha te rākṣasāḥ sarve ye'bhirakṣanti padminīm ,
pratyutthitā bhagavantaṁ maṇibhadrapurogamāḥ.
8. atha te rākṣasāḥ sarve ye abhirakṣanti padminīm
pratyutthitāḥ bhagavantam maṇibhadrapurogamāḥ
8. atha maṇibhadrapurogamāḥ ye padminīm abhirakṣanti

8. Then, all those rākṣasas who guarded the lotus pond, with Maṇibhadra at their head, rose to greet the venerable lord.
स तान्प्रत्यर्चयामास राक्षसान्भीमविक्रमान् ।
निवेदयत मां क्षिप्रं धनदायेति चाब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. sa tānpratyarcayāmāsa rākṣasānbhīmavikramān ,
nivedayata māṁ kṣipraṁ dhanadāyeti cābravīt.
9. saḥ tān pratyarcayāmāsa rākṣasān bhīmavikramān
nivedayata mām kṣipram dhanadāya iti ca abravīt
9. saḥ tān bhīmavikramān rākṣasān pratyarcayāmāsa ca
iti 'mām kṣipram dhanadāya nivedayata' abravīt
9. He greeted in return those rākṣasas of formidable prowess and said, 'Announce me quickly to Dhanada (Kubera)!'
ते राक्षसास्तदा राजन्भगवन्तमथाब्रुवन् ।
असौ वैश्रवणो राजा स्वयमायाति तेऽन्तिकम् ॥१०॥
10. te rākṣasāstadā rājanbhagavantamathābruvan ,
asau vaiśravaṇo rājā svayamāyāti te'ntikam.
10. te rākṣasāḥ tadā rājan bhagavantam atha abruvan
asau vaiśravaṇaḥ rājā svayam āyāti te antikām
10. rājan tadā te rākṣasāḥ bhagavantam atha abruvan
'asau rājā vaiśravaṇaḥ svayam te antikām āyāti'
10. Then, O King, those rākṣasas said to the venerable lord, 'King Vaiśravaṇa himself is coming to your presence.'
विदितो भगवानस्य कार्यमागमने च यत् ।
पश्यैनं त्वं महाभागं ज्वलन्तमिव तेजसा ॥११॥
11. vidito bhagavānasya kāryamāgamane ca yat ,
paśyainaṁ tvaṁ mahābhāgaṁ jvalantamiva tejasā.
11. viditaḥ bhagavān asya kāryam āgamane ca yat
paśya enam tvam mahābhāgam jvalantam iva tejasā
11. bhagavān asya yat āgamane kāryam ca viditaḥ
tvam tejasā jvalantam iva enam mahābhāgam paśya
11. Venerable sir, your presence and its purpose are already known to him. Now, behold this greatly fortunate one, shining as if with his own splendor.
ततो वैश्रवणोऽभ्येत्य अष्टावक्रमनिन्दितम् ।
विधिवत्कुशलं पृष्ट्वा ततो ब्रह्मर्षिमब्रवीत् ॥१२॥
12. tato vaiśravaṇo'bhyetya aṣṭāvakramaninditam ,
vidhivatkuśalaṁ pṛṣṭvā tato brahmarṣimabravīt.
12. tataḥ vaiśravaṇaḥ abhyetya aṣṭāvakram aninditam
vidhivat kuśalam pṛṣṭvā tataḥ brahmarṣim abravīt
12. vaiśravaṇaḥ tataḥ aninditam aṣṭāvakram abhyetya
vidhivat kuśalam pṛṣṭvā tataḥ brahmarṣim abravīt
12. Then Vaiśravaṇa, having approached the blameless Aṣṭāvakra, and after formally inquiring about his well-being, spoke to that brahmin sage (brahmarṣi).
सुखं प्राप्तो भवान्कच्चित्किं वा मत्तश्चिकीर्षसि ।
ब्रूहि सर्वं करिष्यामि यन्मां त्वं वक्ष्यसि द्विज ॥१३॥
13. sukhaṁ prāpto bhavānkaccitkiṁ vā mattaścikīrṣasi ,
brūhi sarvaṁ kariṣyāmi yanmāṁ tvaṁ vakṣyasi dvija.
13. sukham prāptaḥ bhavān kaccit kim vā mattaḥ cikīrṣasi
brūhi sarvam kariṣyāmi yat mām tvam vakṣyasi dvija
13. bhavān sukham prāptaḥ kaccit vā mattaḥ kim cikīrṣasi
dvija brūhi tvam yat mām vakṣyasi sarvam kariṣyāmi
13. I hope you have arrived safely and well? What do you wish to accomplish through me? Tell me, O brahmin (dvija), I will do everything that you instruct me to do.
भवनं प्रविश त्वं मे यथाकामं द्विजोत्तम ।
सत्कृतः कृतकार्यश्च भवान्यास्यत्यविघ्नतः ॥१४॥
14. bhavanaṁ praviśa tvaṁ me yathākāmaṁ dvijottama ,
satkṛtaḥ kṛtakāryaśca bhavānyāsyatyavighnataḥ.
14. bhavanam praviśa tvam me yathākāmam dvijottama
satkṛtaḥ kṛtakāryaḥ ca bhavān yāsyati avighnataḥ
14. dvijottama tvam me bhavanam yathākāmam praviśa
bhavān satkṛtaḥ ca kṛtakāryaḥ avighnataḥ yāsyati
14. O best of brahmins (dvijottama), you may enter my palace as you desire. Having been honored and having achieved your objective, you will depart without any obstacles.
प्राविशद्भवनं स्वं वै गृहीत्वा तं द्विजोत्तमम् ।
आसनं स्वं ददौ चैव पाद्यमर्घ्यं तथैव च ॥१५॥
15. prāviśadbhavanaṁ svaṁ vai gṛhītvā taṁ dvijottamam ,
āsanaṁ svaṁ dadau caiva pādyamarghyaṁ tathaiva ca.
15. prāviśat bhavanam svam vai gṛhītvā tam dvijottamam
āsanam svam dadau ca eva pādyam arghyam tathā eva ca
15. vai tam dvijottamam gṛhītvā svam bhavanam prāviśat
ca eva svam āsanam pādyam arghyam ca tathaiva dadau
15. Indeed, having respectfully received that best of brahmins (dvijottama), he entered his own palace. He then offered his own seat, water for the feet (pādya), and water for respectful offering (arghya).
अथोपविष्टयोस्तत्र मणिभद्रपुरोगमाः ।
निषेदुस्तत्र कौबेरा यक्षगन्धर्वराक्षसाः ॥१६॥
16. athopaviṣṭayostatra maṇibhadrapurogamāḥ ,
niṣedustatra kauberā yakṣagandharvarākṣasāḥ.
16. atha upaviṣṭayoḥ tatra maṇibhadrapurogamāḥ
niṣeduḥ tatra kauberāḥ yakṣagandharvarākṣasāḥ
16. atha tatra upaviṣṭayoḥ maṇibhadrapurogamāḥ
kauberāḥ yakṣagandharvarākṣasāḥ tatra niṣeduḥ
16. Then, as those two were seated there, the attendants of Kubera - namely, the Yakṣas, Gandharvas, and Rākṣasas, led by Maṇibhadra - also took their seats there.
ततस्तेषां निषण्णानां धनदो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
भवच्छन्दं समाज्ञाय नृत्येरन्नप्सरोगणाः ॥१७॥
17. tatasteṣāṁ niṣaṇṇānāṁ dhanado vākyamabravīt ,
bhavacchandaṁ samājñāya nṛtyerannapsarogaṇāḥ.
17. tataḥ teṣām niṣaṇṇānām dhanadaḥ vākyam abravīt
bhavat chandam samājñāya nṛtyeran apsarasogaṇāḥ
17. tataḥ teṣām niṣaṇṇānām dhanadaḥ vākyam abravīt
bhavat chandam samājñāya apsarasogaṇāḥ nṛtyeran
17. Then, to those who had been seated, Dhanada (Kubera) spoke these words: "Having understood your wish, let the troops of Apsarases perform their dance."
आतिथ्यं परमं कार्यं शुश्रूषा भवतस्तथा ।
संवर्ततामित्युवाच मुनिर्मधुरया गिरा ॥१८॥
18. ātithyaṁ paramaṁ kāryaṁ śuśrūṣā bhavatastathā ,
saṁvartatāmityuvāca munirmadhurayā girā.
18. ātithyam paramam kāryam śuśrūṣā bhavataḥ tathā
saṃvartatām iti uvāca muniḥ madhurayā girā
18. ātithyam paramam kāryam tathā bhavataḥ śuśrūṣā;
muniḥ madhurayā girā saṃvartatām iti uvāca
18. Supreme hospitality (ātithya) and service (śuśrūṣā) should be rendered to you; "Let it proceed!" said the sage with sweet words.
अथोर्वरा मिश्रकेशी रम्भा चैवोर्वशी तथा ।
अलम्बुसा घृताची च चित्रा चित्राङ्गदा रुचिः ॥१९॥
19. athorvarā miśrakeśī rambhā caivorvaśī tathā ,
alambusā ghṛtācī ca citrā citrāṅgadā ruciḥ.
19. atha ūrvarā miśrakeśī rambhā ca eva urvaśī
tathā alambusā ghṛtācī ca citrā citrāṅgadā ruciḥ
19. atha ūrvarā miśrakeśī rambhā ca eva urvaśī
tathā alambusā ghṛtācī ca citrā citrāṅgadā ruciḥ
19. Then Ūrvarā, Miśrakeśī, Rambhā, and also Urvaśī; similarly Alambusā, Ghṛtācī, Citrā, Citrāṅgadā, and Ruci were present.
मनोहरा सुकेशी च सुमुखी हासिनी प्रभा ।
विद्युता प्रशमा दान्ता विद्योता रतिरेव च ॥२०॥
20. manoharā sukeśī ca sumukhī hāsinī prabhā ,
vidyutā praśamā dāntā vidyotā ratireva ca.
20. manoharā sukeśī ca sumukhī hāsinī prabhā
vidyutā praśamā dāntā vidyotā ratiḥ eva ca
20. manoharā sukeśī ca sumukhī hāsinī prabhā
vidyutā praśamā dāntā vidyotā ratiḥ eva ca
20. Manoharā, Sukeśī, Sumukhī, Hāsinī, Prabhā, Vidyutā, Praśamā, Dāntā, Vidyotā, and Rati as well.
एताश्चान्याश्च वै बह्व्यः प्रनृत्ताप्सरसः शुभाः ।
अवादयंश्च गन्धर्वा वाद्यानि विविधानि च ॥२१॥
21. etāścānyāśca vai bahvyaḥ pranṛttāpsarasaḥ śubhāḥ ,
avādayaṁśca gandharvā vādyāni vividhāni ca.
21. etāḥ ca anyāḥ ca vai bahvyaḥ pranṛttāpsarasaḥ
śubhāḥ avādayan ca gandharvāḥ vādyāni vividhāni ca
21. etāḥ ca anyāḥ ca vai bahvyaḥ śubhāḥ pranṛttāpsarasaḥ
ca gandharvāḥ vividhāni vādyāni avādayan
21. And these, as well as many other beautiful dancing apsaras, and the Gandharvas (gandharva) played various musical instruments.
अथ प्रवृत्ते गान्धर्वे दिव्ये ऋषिरुपावसत् ।
दिव्यं संवत्सरं तत्र रमन्वै सुमहातपाः ॥२२॥
22. atha pravṛtte gāndharve divye ṛṣirupāvasat ,
divyaṁ saṁvatsaraṁ tatra ramanvai sumahātapāḥ.
22. atha pravṛtte gāndharve divye ṛṣiḥ upāvasat
divyam saṃvatsaram tatra raman vai sumahātapaḥ
22. atha divye gāndharve pravṛtte sumahātapaḥ ṛṣiḥ
tatra divyam saṃvatsaram raman vai upāvasat
22. Then, when the divine musical performance (gāndharva) commenced, the sage (ṛṣi), who possessed great spiritual fervor (tapas), indeed resided there, delighting for a divine year.
ततो वैश्रवणो राजा भगवन्तमुवाच ह ।
साग्रः संवत्सरो यातस्तव विप्रेह पश्यतः ॥२३॥
23. tato vaiśravaṇo rājā bhagavantamuvāca ha ,
sāgraḥ saṁvatsaro yātastava vipreha paśyataḥ.
23. tataḥ vaiśravaṇaḥ rājā bhagavantam uvāca ha
sa-agraḥ saṃvatsaraḥ yātaḥ tava vipra iha paśyataḥ
23. tataḥ rājā vaiśravaṇaḥ ha bhagavantam uvāca
vipra tava iha paśyataḥ sāgraḥ saṃvatsaraḥ yātaḥ
23. Then King Vaiśravaṇa (vaiśravaṇa) said to the venerable one (bhagavat): "O Brahmin (vipra), more than a year has passed while you were observing here."
हार्योऽयं विषयो ब्रह्मन्गान्धर्वो नाम नामतः ।
छन्दतो वर्ततां विप्र यथा वदति वा भवान् ॥२४॥
24. hāryo'yaṁ viṣayo brahmangāndharvo nāma nāmataḥ ,
chandato vartatāṁ vipra yathā vadati vā bhavān.
24. hāryaḥ ayam viṣayaḥ brahman gāndharvaḥ nāma nāmataḥ
chandataḥ vartatām vipra yathā vadati vā bhavān
24. brahman ayam viṣayaḥ nāmataḥ gāndharvaḥ nāma hāryaḥ
vipra chandataḥ vartatām vā yathā bhavān vadati
24. O Brahmin, this matter, named 'Gandharva,' is to be chosen. Let it proceed according to your wish, O priest, or as your honor states.
अतिथिः पूजनीयस्त्वमिदं च भवतो गृहम् ।
सर्वमाज्ञाप्यतामाशु परवन्तो वयं त्वयि ॥२५॥
25. atithiḥ pūjanīyastvamidaṁ ca bhavato gṛham ,
sarvamājñāpyatāmāśu paravanto vayaṁ tvayi.
25. atithiḥ pūjanīyaḥ tvam idam ca bhavataḥ gṛham
sarvam ājñāpyatām āśu paravantaḥ vayam tvayi
25. tvam pūjanīyaḥ atithiḥ ca idam bhavataḥ gṛham
sarvam āśu ājñāpyatām vayam tvayi paravantaḥ
25. You are an honored guest, and this is your house. Let everything be commanded quickly, for we are dependent on you.
अथ वैश्रवणं प्रीतो भगवान्प्रत्यभाषत ।
अर्चितोऽस्मि यथान्यायं गमिष्यामि धनेश्वर ॥२६॥
26. atha vaiśravaṇaṁ prīto bhagavānpratyabhāṣata ,
arcito'smi yathānyāyaṁ gamiṣyāmi dhaneśvara.
26. atha vaiśravaṇam prītaḥ bhagavān pratyabhāṣata
arcitaḥ asmi yathānyāyam gamiṣyāmi dhaneśvara
26. atha prītaḥ bhagavān vaiśravaṇam pratyabhāṣata
dhaneśvara yathānyāyam arcitaḥ asmi gamiṣyāmi
26. Then the revered one, being pleased, replied to Vaiśravaṇa: 'I have been properly honored, O lord of wealth, and now I will depart.'
प्रीतोऽस्मि सदृशं चैव तव सर्वं धनाधिप ।
तव प्रसादाद्भगवन्महर्षेश्च महात्मनः ।
नियोगादद्य यास्यामि वृद्धिमानृद्धिमान्भव ॥२७॥
27. prīto'smi sadṛśaṁ caiva tava sarvaṁ dhanādhipa ,
tava prasādādbhagavanmaharṣeśca mahātmanaḥ ,
niyogādadya yāsyāmi vṛddhimānṛddhimānbhava.
27. prītaḥ asmi sadṛśam ca eva tava sarvam
dhanādhipa tava prasādāt bhagavan
maharṣeḥ ca mahātmanaḥ niyogāt
adya yāsyāmi vṛddhimān ṛddhimān bhava
27. dhanādhipa prītaḥ asmi ca eva tava
sarvam sadṛśam bhagavan tava prasādāt
ca maharṣeḥ mahātmanaḥ niyogāt
adya yāsyāmi vṛddhimān ṛddhimān bhava
27. I am pleased, and indeed all your (deeds), O lord of wealth, are fitting. O revered one, by your grace and by the command of the great and great-souled (mahātman) sage, I will depart today. May you be prosperous and abundant!
अथ निष्क्रम्य भगवान्प्रययावुत्तरामुखः ।
कैलासं मन्दरं हैमं सर्वाननुचचार ह ॥२८॥
28. atha niṣkramya bhagavānprayayāvuttarāmukhaḥ ,
kailāsaṁ mandaraṁ haimaṁ sarvānanucacāra ha.
28. atha niṣkramya bhagavān prayayau uttarāmukhaḥ
kailāsam mandaram haimam sarvān anucacāra ha
28. atha bhagavān niṣkramya uttarāmukhaḥ prayayau
kailāsam mandaram haimam sarvān ha anucacāra
28. Then, having departed, the venerable Lord proceeded facing north. He indeed visited Kailasa, Mandara, Haima, and all such mountains.
तानतीत्य महाशैलान्कैरातं स्थानमुत्तमम् ।
प्रदक्षिणं ततश्चक्रे प्रयतः शिरसा नमन् ।
धरणीमवतीर्याथ पूतात्मासौ तदाभवत् ॥२९॥
29. tānatītya mahāśailānkairātaṁ sthānamuttamam ,
pradakṣiṇaṁ tataścakre prayataḥ śirasā naman ,
dharaṇīmavatīryātha pūtātmāsau tadābhavat.
29. tān atītya mahāśailān kairātam sthānam
uttamam pradakṣiṇam tataḥ cakre
prayataḥ śirasā naman dharaṇīm
avatīrya atha pūtātmā asau tadā abhavat
29. tān mahāśailān atītya uttamam kairātam

29. Having passed beyond those great mountains, he then respectfully performed a circumambulation of the excellent Kirata abode, bowing his head. After descending to the earth, he became pure-souled at that time.
स तं प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा त्रिः शैलं चोत्तरामुखः ।
समेन भूमिभागेन ययौ प्रीतिपुरस्कृतः ॥३०॥
30. sa taṁ pradakṣiṇaṁ kṛtvā triḥ śailaṁ cottarāmukhaḥ ,
samena bhūmibhāgena yayau prītipuraskṛtaḥ.
30. saḥ tam pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā triḥ śailam ca uttarāmukhaḥ
samena bhūmibhāgena yayau prītipuraskṛtaḥ
30. saḥ uttarāmukhaḥ prītipuraskṛtaḥ tam śailam triḥ
pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā ca samena bhūmibhāgena yayau
30. Having performed a circumambulation of that mountain three times, he, facing north, proceeded joyfully over an even part of the ground.
ततोऽपरं वनोद्देशं रमणीयमपश्यत ।
सर्वर्तुभिर्मूलफलैः पक्षिभिश्च समन्वितम् ।
रमणीयैर्वनोद्देशैस्तत्र तत्र विभूषितम् ॥३१॥
31. tato'paraṁ vanoddeśaṁ ramaṇīyamapaśyata ,
sarvartubhirmūlaphalaiḥ pakṣibhiśca samanvitam ,
ramaṇīyairvanoddeśaistatra tatra vibhūṣitam.

31. Then he saw another beautiful forest region, endowed with all seasons, roots and fruits, and birds. It was adorned here and there with charming groves.
तत्राश्रमपदं दिव्यं ददर्श भगवानथ ।
शैलांश्च विविधाकारान्काञ्चनान्रत्नभूषितान् ।
मणिभूमौ निविष्टाश्च पुष्करिण्यस्तथैव च ॥३२॥
32. tatrāśramapadaṁ divyaṁ dadarśa bhagavānatha ,
śailāṁśca vividhākārānkāñcanānratnabhūṣitān ,
maṇibhūmau niviṣṭāśca puṣkariṇyastathaiva ca.

32. Then, the revered one (bhagavān) saw a divine hermitage there. He also beheld various mountains, golden and adorned with jewels, and lotus ponds situated on gem-studded ground as well.
अन्यान्यपि सुरम्याणि ददर्श सुबहून्यथ ।
भृशं तस्य मनो रेमे महर्षेर्भावितात्मनः ॥३३॥
33. anyānyapi suramyāṇi dadarśa subahūnyatha ,
bhṛśaṁ tasya mano reme maharṣerbhāvitātmanaḥ.
33. anyāni api suramyāṇi dadarśa subahūni atha
bhṛśam tasya manaḥ reme maharṣeḥ bhāvitātmanaḥ
33. atha saḥ subahūni anyāni api suramyāṇi dadarśa
tasya bhāvitātmanaḥ maharṣeḥ manaḥ bhṛśam reme
33. Then, he saw many other very charming things. The mind of that great sage, whose self (ātman) was purified, greatly rejoiced.
स तत्र काञ्चनं दिव्यं सर्वरत्नमयं गृहम् ।
ददर्शाद्भुतसंकाशं धनदस्य गृहाद्वरम् ॥३४॥
34. sa tatra kāñcanaṁ divyaṁ sarvaratnamayaṁ gṛham ,
dadarśādbhutasaṁkāśaṁ dhanadasya gṛhādvaram.

dadarśa adbhutasaṃkāśam dhanadasya gṛhāt varam

34. He saw there a divine, golden house, made of all jewels, appearing wondrous, and superior to the abode of Dhanada (Kubera).
महान्तो यत्र विविधाः प्रासादाः पर्वतोपमाः ।
विमानानि च रम्याणि रत्नानि विविधानि च ॥३५॥
35. mahānto yatra vividhāḥ prāsādāḥ parvatopamāḥ ,
vimānāni ca ramyāṇi ratnāni vividhāni ca.
35. mahāntaḥ yatra vividhāḥ prāsādāḥ parvatopamāḥ
vimānāni ca ramyāṇi ratnāni vividhāni ca

35. Where there were great, various palaces resembling mountains, and charming aerial cars, and various jewels.
मन्दारपुष्पैः संकीर्णा तथा मन्दाकिनी नदी ।
स्वयंप्रभाश्च मणयो वज्रैर्भूमिश्च भूषिता ॥३६॥
36. mandārapuṣpaiḥ saṁkīrṇā tathā mandākinī nadī ,
svayaṁprabhāśca maṇayo vajrairbhūmiśca bhūṣitā.
36. mandārapuṣpaiḥ saṃkīrṇā tathā mandākinī nadī
svayaṃprabhāḥ ca maṇayaḥ vajraiḥ bhūmiḥ ca bhūṣitā

36. The Mandakini river was covered with Mandara flowers, and the ground was adorned with self-luminous jewels and diamonds.
नानाविधैश्च भवनैर्विचित्रमणितोरणैः ।
मुक्ताजालपरिक्षिप्तैर्मणिरत्नविभूषितैः ।
मनोदृष्टिहरै रम्यैः सर्वतः संवृतं शुभैः ॥३७॥
37. nānāvidhaiśca bhavanairvicitramaṇitoraṇaiḥ ,
muktājālaparikṣiptairmaṇiratnavibhūṣitaiḥ ,
manodṛṣṭiharai ramyaiḥ sarvataḥ saṁvṛtaṁ śubhaiḥ.
37. nānāvidhaiḥ ca bhavanaiḥ
vicitramaṇitoraṇaiḥ muktājālaparikṣiptaiḥ
maṇiratnavibhūṣitaiḥ manodṛṣṭiharaiḥ
ramyaiḥ sarvataḥ saṃvṛtam śubhaiḥ
37. sarvataḥ saṃvṛtam nānāvidhaiḥ ca
bhavanaiḥ vicitramaṇitoraṇaiḥ
muktājālaparikṣiptaiḥ maṇiratnavibhūṣitaiḥ
manodṛṣṭiharaiḥ ramyaiḥ śubhaiḥ
37. Everywhere, it was surrounded by delightful and auspicious mansions of various kinds, with wonderful jeweled gateways, covered with nets of pearls, and adorned with gems and jewels that captivated both the mind and the sight.
ऋषिः समन्ततोऽपश्यत्तत्र तत्र मनोरमम् ।
ततोऽभवत्तस्य चिन्ता क्व मे वासो भवेदिति ॥३८॥
38. ṛṣiḥ samantato'paśyattatra tatra manoramam ,
tato'bhavattasya cintā kva me vāso bhavediti.
38. ṛṣiḥ samantataḥ apaśyat tatra tatra manoramam |
tataḥ abhavat tasya cintā kva me vāsaḥ bhavet iti
38. ṛṣiḥ samantataḥ tatra tatra manoramam apaśyat
tataḥ tasya cintā abhavat "me vāsaḥ kva bhavet" iti
38. The sage looked all around and saw delightful sights here and there. Then, a thought arose in him: "Where should my dwelling be?"
अथ द्वारं समभितो गत्वा स्थित्वा ततोऽब्रवीत् ।
अतिथिं मामनुप्राप्तमनुजानन्तु येऽत्र वै ॥३९॥
39. atha dvāraṁ samabhito gatvā sthitvā tato'bravīt ,
atithiṁ māmanuprāptamanujānantu ye'tra vai.
39. atha dvāram samabhitaḥ gatvā sthitvā tataḥ abravīt
| atithiṃ mām anuprāptam anujānantu ye atra vai
39. atha dvāram samabhitaḥ gatvā sthitvā tataḥ abravīt
atithiṃ mām anuprāptam ye atra vai anujānantu
39. Then, having gone and stood by the gate, he said, "May those who are present here please grant permission to me, who has arrived as a guest."
अथ कन्यापरिवृता गृहात्तस्माद्विनिःसृताः ।
नानारूपाः सप्त विभो कन्याः सर्वा मनोहराः ॥४०॥
40. atha kanyāparivṛtā gṛhāttasmādviniḥsṛtāḥ ,
nānārūpāḥ sapta vibho kanyāḥ sarvā manoharāḥ.
40. atha kanyāparivṛtāḥ gṛhāt tasmāt viniḥsṛtāḥ
nānārūpāḥ sapta vibho kanyāḥ sarvāḥ manoharāḥ
40. vibho atha sapta manoharāḥ nānārūpāḥ kanyāḥ
sarvāḥ kanyāparivṛtāḥ viniḥsṛtāḥ tasmāt gṛhāt
40. Then, O lord, seven captivating maidens of various forms, all accompanied by other maidens, emerged from that house.
यां यामपश्यत्कन्यां स सा सा तस्य मनोऽहरत् ।
नाशक्नुवद्धारयितुं मनोऽथास्यावसीदति ॥४१॥
41. yāṁ yāmapaśyatkanyāṁ sa sā sā tasya mano'harat ,
nāśaknuvaddhārayituṁ mano'thāsyāvasīdati.
41. yām yām apaśyat kanyām saḥ sā sā tasya manaḥ aharat
na aśaknuvat dhārayitum manaḥ atha asya avasīdati
41. saḥ yām yām kanyām apaśyat sā sā tasya manaḥ aharat
saḥ na aśaknuvat dhārayitum asya manaḥ atha avasīdati
41. Whichever maiden he saw, that very maiden captivated his mind. He was unable to control his mind, and then his mind became dejected.
ततो धृतिः समुत्पन्ना तस्य विप्रस्य धीमतः ।
अथ तं प्रमदाः प्राहुर्भगवान्प्रविशत्विति ॥४२॥
42. tato dhṛtiḥ samutpannā tasya viprasya dhīmataḥ ,
atha taṁ pramadāḥ prāhurbhagavānpraviśatviti.
42. tataḥ dhṛtiḥ samutpannā tasya viprasya dhīmataḥ
atha tam pramadāḥ prāhuḥ bhagavān praviśatu iti
42. tataḥ dhṛtiḥ samutpannā tasya dhīmataḥ viprasya
atha pramadāḥ tam prāhuḥ bhagavān praviśatu iti
42. Then, a firm resolve arose in that wise Brahmin. Thereupon, the maidens said to him, 'O venerable one, please enter!'
स च तासां सुरूपाणां तस्यैव भवनस्य च ।
कौतूहलसमाविष्टः प्रविवेश गृहं द्विजः ॥४३॥
43. sa ca tāsāṁ surūpāṇāṁ tasyaiva bhavanasya ca ,
kautūhalasamāviṣṭaḥ praviveśa gṛhaṁ dvijaḥ.
43. saḥ ca tāsām surūpāṇām tasya eva bhavanasya
ca kautūhalasamāviṣṭaḥ praviveśa gṛham dvijaḥ
43. ca saḥ dvijaḥ tāsām surūpāṇām ca tasya eva
bhavanasya kautūhalasamāviṣṭaḥ gṛham praviveśa
43. And that Brahmin, filled with curiosity about those beautiful maidens and also about that very mansion, entered the house.
तत्रापश्यज्जरायुक्तामरजोम्बरधारिणीम् ।
वृद्धां पर्यङ्कमासीनां सर्वाभरणभूषिताम् ॥४४॥
44. tatrāpaśyajjarāyuktāmarajombaradhāriṇīm ,
vṛddhāṁ paryaṅkamāsīnāṁ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitām.
44. tatra apaśyat jarāyuktām arajombaradhāriṇīm
vṛddhām paryaṅkam āsīnām sarvābharaṇabhūṣitām

44. There he saw an aged woman, wearing spotless garments, seated on a couch and adorned with all ornaments.
स्वस्तीति चाथ तेनोक्ता सा स्त्री प्रत्यवदत्तदा ।
प्रत्युत्थाय च तं विप्रमास्यतामित्युवाच ह ॥४५॥
45. svastīti cātha tenoktā sā strī pratyavadattadā ,
pratyutthāya ca taṁ vipramāsyatāmityuvāca ha.
45. svasti iti ca atha tena uktā sā strī pratyavadat
tadā pratyutthāya ca tam vipram āsyatām iti uvāca ha
45. atha tena svasti iti uktā sā strī tadā pratyavadat
ca pratyutthāya ca tam vipram āsyatām iti uvāca ha
45. Then, when she was addressed by him with the greeting 'svasti' (svasti), that woman replied. And rising, she said to that Brahmin (vipra), 'Please be seated'.
अष्टावक्र उवाच ।
सर्वाः स्वानालयान्यान्तु एका मामुपतिष्ठतु ।
सुप्रज्ञाता सुप्रशान्ता शेषा गच्छन्तु च्छन्दतः ॥४६॥
46. aṣṭāvakra uvāca ,
sarvāḥ svānālayānyāntu ekā māmupatiṣṭhatu ,
suprajñātā supraśāntā śeṣā gacchantu cchandataḥ.
46. aṣṭāvakra uvāca sarvāḥ svālayān yāntu ekā mām upatiṣṭhatu
suprājñātā suprāśāntā śeṣāḥ gacchantu chandataḥ
46. aṣṭāvakra uvāca sarvāḥ svālayān yāntu ekā suprājñātā
suprāśāntā mām upatiṣṭhatu śeṣāḥ chandataḥ gacchantu
46. Aṣṭāvakra said: 'Let all (the maidens) go to their own homes; let one attend upon me - the one who is very wise and very peaceful. Let the remaining ones go as they please.'
ततः प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य कन्यास्तास्तमृषिं तदा ।
निराक्रामन्गृहात्तस्मात्सा वृद्धाथ व्यतिष्ठत ॥४७॥
47. tataḥ pradakṣiṇīkṛtya kanyāstāstamṛṣiṁ tadā ,
nirākrāmangṛhāttasmātsā vṛddhātha vyatiṣṭhata.
47. tataḥ pradakṣiṇī-kṛtya kanyāḥ tāḥ tam ṛṣim tadā
niḥ-akrāman gṛhāt tasmāt sā vṛddhā atha vyatiṣṭhata
47. tataḥ tadā tāḥ kanyāḥ tam ṛṣim pradakṣiṇī-kṛtya
niḥ-akrāman gṛhāt tasmāt sā vṛddhā atha vyatiṣṭhata
47. Then, having circumambulated that sage (ṛṣi), those maidens then departed from that house. That old woman, however, remained.
अथ तां संविशन्प्राह शयने भास्वरे तदा ।
त्वयापि सुप्यतां भद्रे रजनी ह्यतिवर्तते ॥४८॥
48. atha tāṁ saṁviśanprāha śayane bhāsvare tadā ,
tvayāpi supyatāṁ bhadre rajanī hyativartate.
48. atha tām saṃviśan prāha śayane bhāsvare tadā
tvayā api supyatām bhadre rajanī hi ativartate
48. Then, approaching her on the resplendent couch, he said, "You too should sleep, O gentle lady, for the night is indeed passing."
संलापात्तेन विप्रेण तथा सा तत्र भाषिता ।
द्वितीये शयने दिव्ये संविवेश महाप्रभे ॥४९॥
49. saṁlāpāttena vipreṇa tathā sā tatra bhāṣitā ,
dvitīye śayane divye saṁviveśa mahāprabhe.
49. saṃlāpāt tena vipreṇa tathā sā tatra bhāṣitā
dvitīye śayane divye saṃviveśa mahāprabhe
49. After being addressed by that brahmin in conversation, she sat down there on the second divine and greatly resplendent couch.
अथ सा वेपमानाङ्गी निमित्तं शीतजं तदा ।
व्यपदिश्य महर्षेर्वै शयनं चाध्यरोहत ॥५०॥
50. atha sā vepamānāṅgī nimittaṁ śītajaṁ tadā ,
vyapadiśya maharṣervai śayanaṁ cādhyarohata.
50. atha sā vepamānāṅgī nimittam śītajam tadā
vyapadiśya maharṣeḥ vai śayanam ca adhyarohat
50. Then, with trembling limbs, she cited cold as a pretext and indeed ascended the great sage's bed.
स्वागतं स्वागतेनास्तु भगवांस्तामभाषत ।
सोपागूहद्भुजाभ्यां तु ऋषिं प्रीत्या नरर्षभ ॥५१॥
51. svāgataṁ svāgatenāstu bhagavāṁstāmabhāṣata ,
sopāgūhadbhujābhyāṁ tu ṛṣiṁ prītyā nararṣabha.
51. svāgatam svāgatena astu bhagavān tām abhāṣata
saḥ upāgūhat bhujābhyām tu ṛṣim prītyā nararṣabha
51. "Welcome! May it be well with welcome," the venerable one said to her. And he, with his arms, lovingly embraced her, the sage (ṛṣi), O best among men!
निर्विकारमृषिं चापि काष्ठकुड्योपमं तदा ।
दुःखिता प्रेक्ष्य संजल्पमकार्षीदृषिणा सह ॥५२॥
52. nirvikāramṛṣiṁ cāpi kāṣṭhakuḍyopamaṁ tadā ,
duḥkhitā prekṣya saṁjalpamakārṣīdṛṣiṇā saha.
52. nirvikāram ṛṣim ca api kāṣṭhakuḍyopamam tadā
duḥkhitā prekṣya saṃjalpam akārṣīt ṛṣiṇā saha
52. tadā duḥkhitā kāṣṭhakuḍyopamam nirvikāram ṛṣim
ca api prekṣya ṛṣiṇā saha saṃjalpam akārṣīt
52. Seeing the sage (ṛṣi) who was then unperturbed, like a log or a wall, she, distressed, began a conversation with him.
ब्रह्मन्न कामकारोऽस्ति स्त्रीणां पुरुषतो धृतिः ।
कामेन मोहिता चाहं त्वां भजन्तीं भजस्व माम् ॥५३॥
53. brahmanna kāmakāro'sti strīṇāṁ puruṣato dhṛtiḥ ,
kāmena mohitā cāhaṁ tvāṁ bhajantīṁ bhajasva mām.
53. brahman na kāmakāraḥ asti strīṇām puruṣataḥ dhṛtiḥ
kāmena mohitā ca aham tvām bhajantīm bhajasva mām
53. brahman strīṇām puruṣataḥ dhṛtiḥ na kāmakāraḥ asti
ca aham kāmena mohitā tvām bhajantīm mām bhajasva
53. O (brahman), women have no independent will; their steadfastness (dhṛti) comes from a man. And I, bewildered by desire (kāma), am devoted to you, so accept me!
प्रहृष्टो भव विप्रर्षे समागच्छ मया सह ।
उपगूह च मां विप्र कामार्ताहं भृशं त्वयि ॥५४॥
54. prahṛṣṭo bhava viprarṣe samāgaccha mayā saha ,
upagūha ca māṁ vipra kāmārtāhaṁ bhṛśaṁ tvayi.
54. prahṛṣṭaḥ bhava viprarṣe samāgaccha mayā saha
upagūha ca mām vipra kāmārtā aham bhṛśam tvayi
54. viprarṣe prahṛṣṭaḥ bhava mayā saha samāgaccha
ca vipra mām upagūha aham tvayi bhṛśam kāmārtā
54. O (brahmin-sage), be joyful and come with me. And, O (brahman), embrace me, for I am intensely afflicted by desire (kāma) for you.
एतद्धि तव धर्मात्मंस्तपसः पूज्यते फलम् ।
प्रार्थितं दर्शनादेव भजमानां भजस्व माम् ॥५५॥
55. etaddhi tava dharmātmaṁstapasaḥ pūjyate phalam ,
prārthitaṁ darśanādeva bhajamānāṁ bhajasva mām.
55. etat hi tava dharmātman tapasaḥ pūjyate phalam
prārthitam darśanāt eva bhajamānām bhajasva mām
55. dharmātman hi etat tava tapasaḥ phalam pūjyate
darśanāt eva prārthitam bhajamānām mām bhajasva
55. Indeed, O virtuous soul (dharmātman), this is the revered fruit of your asceticism (tapas). Accept me, who is devoted to you, as this (request) has been made merely by my appearance.
सद्म चेदं वनं चेदं यच्चान्यदपि पश्यसि ।
प्रभुत्वं तव सर्वत्र मयि चैव न संशयः ॥५६॥
56. sadma cedaṁ vanaṁ cedaṁ yaccānyadapi paśyasi ,
prabhutvaṁ tava sarvatra mayi caiva na saṁśayaḥ.
56. sadma ca idam vanam ca idam yat ca anyat api paśyasi
prabhutvam tava sarvatra mayi ca eva na saṃśayaḥ
56. idam sadma ca idam vanam ca yat ca anyat api paśyasi
tava prabhutvam sarvatra mayi ca eva na saṃśayaḥ
56. This abode, and this forest, and whatever else you see - your dominion is everywhere, and over me, indeed, there is no doubt.
सर्वान्कामान्विधास्यामि रमस्व सहितो मया ।
रमणीये वने विप्र सर्वकामफलप्रदे ॥५७॥
57. sarvānkāmānvidhāsyāmi ramasva sahito mayā ,
ramaṇīye vane vipra sarvakāmaphalaprade.
57. sarvān kāmān vidhāsyāmi ramasva sahitaḥ mayā
ramaṇīye vane vipra sarvakāmaphalaprade
57. vipra sarvān kāmān vidhāsyāmi mayā sahitaḥ
ramasva ramaṇīye sarvakāmaphalaprade vane
57. O Brahmin, I will fulfill all your desires. Enjoy yourself with me in this beautiful forest, which grants the fruits of all desires.
त्वद्वशाहं भविष्यामि रंस्यसे च मया सह ।
सर्वान्कामानुपाश्नानो ये दिव्या ये च मानुषाः ॥५८॥
58. tvadvaśāhaṁ bhaviṣyāmi raṁsyase ca mayā saha ,
sarvānkāmānupāśnāno ye divyā ye ca mānuṣāḥ.
58. tvadvaśā aham bhaviṣyāmi raṃsyase ca mayā saha
sarvān kāmān upāśnānaḥ ye divyāḥ ye ca mānuṣāḥ
58. aham tvadvaśā bhaviṣyāmi ca mayā saha raṃsyase
sarvān ye divyāḥ ye ca mānuṣāḥ kāmān upāśnānaḥ
58. I shall be under your control, and you will enjoy with me, fulfilling all desires, both divine and human.
नातः परं हि नारीणां कार्यं किंचन विद्यते ।
यथा पुरुषसंसर्गः परमेतद्धि नः फलम् ॥५९॥
59. nātaḥ paraṁ hi nārīṇāṁ kāryaṁ kiṁcana vidyate ,
yathā puruṣasaṁsargaḥ parametaddhi naḥ phalam.
59. na ataḥ param hi nārīṇām kāryam kiṃcana vidyate
yathā puruṣasaṃsargaḥ param etat hi naḥ phalam
59. hi nārīṇām ataḥ param kiṃcana kāryam na vidyate
yathā puruṣasaṃsargaḥ etat hi naḥ param phalam
59. Indeed, for women, there is no other duty (kārya) whatsoever higher than this: that union with a man (puruṣa) is truly our supreme reward.
आत्मच्छन्देन वर्तन्ते नार्यो मन्मथचोदिताः ।
न च दह्यन्ति गच्छन्त्यः सुतप्तैरपि पांसुभिः ॥६०॥
60. ātmacchandena vartante nāryo manmathacoditāḥ ,
na ca dahyanti gacchantyaḥ sutaptairapi pāṁsubhiḥ.
60. ātmacchandena vartante nāryaḥ manmathacoditāḥ na
ca dahyanti gacchantyaḥ sutaptaiḥ api pāṃsubhiḥ
60. nāryaḥ manmathacoditāḥ ātmacchandena vartante ca

60. Women, impelled by passion, act according to their own will. And even when walking on very hot dust, they are not burned.
अष्टावक्र उवाच ।
परदारानहं भद्रे न गच्छेयं कथंचन ।
दूषितं धर्मशास्त्रेषु परदाराभिमर्शनम् ॥६१॥
61. aṣṭāvakra uvāca ,
paradārānahaṁ bhadre na gaccheyaṁ kathaṁcana ,
dūṣitaṁ dharmaśāstreṣu paradārābhimarśanam.

61. Aṣṭāvakra said: "O noble lady, I would never approach another man's wife by any means. Approaching another's wife is condemned in the scriptures concerning natural law (dharmaśāstras)."
भद्रे निवेष्टुकामं मां विद्धि सत्येन वै शपे ।
विषयेष्वनभिज्ञोऽहं धर्मार्थं किल संततिः ॥६२॥
62. bhadre niveṣṭukāmaṁ māṁ viddhi satyena vai śape ,
viṣayeṣvanabhijño'haṁ dharmārthaṁ kila saṁtatiḥ.

viṣayeṣu anabhijñaḥ aham dharmārtham kila saṃtatiḥ
62. bhadre,
mām niveṣṭukāmam viddhi aham satyena vai śape aham viṣayeṣu anabhijñaḥ saṃtatiḥ kila dharmārtham
62. O noble lady, know me to be desirous of marrying. I truly swear by truth. I am ignorant of worldly pleasures. Progeny, indeed, is for the sake of upholding natural law (dharma).
एवं लोकान्गमिष्यामि पुत्रैरिति न संशयः ।
भद्रे धर्मं विजानीष्व ज्ञात्वा चोपरमस्व ह ॥६३॥
63. evaṁ lokāngamiṣyāmi putrairiti na saṁśayaḥ ,
bhadre dharmaṁ vijānīṣva jñātvā coparamasva ha.
63. evam lokān gamiṣyāmi putraiḥ iti na saṃśayaḥ
bhadre dharmam vijānīṣva jñātvā ca uparamasva ha
63. evam putraiḥ lokān gamiṣyāmi iti na saṃśayaḥ bhadre,
dharmam vijānīṣva ca jñātvā ha uparamasva
63. "Thus, I shall go to the worlds with sons" – there is no doubt about this. O noble lady, understand natural law (dharma), and having known it, do indeed desist.
स्त्र्युवाच ।
नानिलोऽग्निर्न वरुणो न चान्ये त्रिदशा द्विज ।
प्रियाः स्त्रीणां यथा कामो रतिशीला हि योषितः ॥६४॥
64. stryuvāca ,
nānilo'gnirna varuṇo na cānye tridaśā dvija ,
priyāḥ strīṇāṁ yathā kāmo ratiśīlā hi yoṣitaḥ.
64. strī uvāca na anilaḥ na agniḥ na varuṇaḥ na ca anye tridaśā
dvija priyāḥ strīṇām yathā kāmaḥ ratiśīlāḥ hi yoṣitaḥ
64. strī uvāca dvija strīṇām priyāḥ yathā kāmaḥ na anilaḥ na
agniḥ na varuṇaḥ ca na anye tridaśāḥ hi yoṣitaḥ ratiśīlāḥ
64. The woman said, "Neither the wind, nor fire, nor Varuna, nor any other deities, O twice-born, are as dear to women as desire (kāma); for women are indeed by nature fond of sensual pleasure."
सहस्रैका यता नारी प्राप्नोतीह कदाचन ।
तथा शतसहस्रेषु यदि काचित्पतिव्रता ॥६५॥
65. sahasraikā yatā nārī prāpnotīha kadācana ,
tathā śatasahasreṣu yadi kācitpativratā.

tathā śatasahasreṣu yadi kācit pativratā
65. iha kadācana sahasraikā yatā nārī prāpnoti
tathā śatasahasreṣu yadi kācit pativratā
65. Hardly one woman in a thousand here (on earth) attains [true virtue or fidelity]. Similarly, among hundreds of thousands, there might be one who is a truly devoted wife (pativratā).
नैता जानन्ति पितरं न कुलं न च मातरम् ।
न भ्रातॄन्न च भर्तारं न पुत्रान्न च देवरान् ॥६६॥
66. naitā jānanti pitaraṁ na kulaṁ na ca mātaram ,
na bhrātṝnna ca bhartāraṁ na putrānna ca devarān.
66. na etāḥ jānanti pitaram na kulam na ca mātaram na
bhrātṝn na ca bhartāram na putrān na ca devarān
66. etāḥ na jānanti pitaram na kulam ca na mātaram na
bhrātṝn ca na bhartāram na putrān ca na devarān
66. These women know neither father, nor family, nor mother; nor brothers, nor husband, nor sons, nor brothers-in-law.
लीलायन्त्यः कुलं घ्नन्ति कूलानीव सरिद्वराः ।
दोषांश्च मन्दान्मन्दासु प्रजापतिरभाषत ॥६७॥
67. līlāyantyaḥ kulaṁ ghnanti kūlānīva saridvarāḥ ,
doṣāṁśca mandānmandāsu prajāpatirabhāṣata.
67. līlāyantyaḥ kulam ghnanti kūlāni iva saritvarāḥ
doṣān ca mandān mandāsu prajāpatiḥ abhāṣata
67. līlāyantyaḥ kulam ghnanti iva saritvarāḥ kūlāni
prajāpatiḥ ca abhāṣata mandān doṣān mandāsu
67. Wantonly sporting, they bring ruin to their families, just as great rivers erode their banks. And (the creator) Prajapati declared these faults, even minor ones, to be present even in women of gentle disposition.
भीष्म उवाच ।
ततः स ऋषिरेकाग्रस्तां स्त्रियं प्रत्यभाषत ।
आस्यतां रुचिरं छन्दः किं वा कार्यं ब्रवीहि मे ॥६८॥
68. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tataḥ sa ṛṣirekāgrastāṁ striyaṁ pratyabhāṣata ,
āsyatāṁ ruciraṁ chandaḥ kiṁ vā kāryaṁ bravīhi me.

abhāṣata | āsyatām ruciram chandaḥ kim vā kāryam bravīhi me

68. Bhishma said: Then that sage addressed the woman, who was standing with one-pointed concentration, saying, "Please be seated comfortably, as you wish. What is your purpose, or what task do you have for me? Please tell me."
सा स्त्री प्रोवाच भगवन्द्रक्ष्यसे देशकालतः ।
वस तावन्महाप्राज्ञ कृतकृत्यो गमिष्यसि ॥६९॥
69. sā strī provāca bhagavandrakṣyase deśakālataḥ ,
vasa tāvanmahāprājña kṛtakṛtyo gamiṣyasi.
69. sā strī provāca bhagavan drakṣyase deśakālataḥ
| vasa tāvat mahāprājña kṛtakṛtyaḥ gamiṣyasi
69. sā strī provāca bhagavan,
deśakālataḥ drakṣyase mahāprājña,
tāvat vasa kṛtakṛtyaḥ gamiṣyasi
69. That woman replied, "O venerable one, you will perceive (my purpose) in due course, considering the circumstances. Please stay here for now, O greatly wise one; you will depart after your task is accomplished."
ब्रह्मर्षिस्तामथोवाच स तथेति युधिष्ठिर ।
वत्स्येऽहं यावदुत्साहो भवत्या नात्र संशयः ॥७०॥
70. brahmarṣistāmathovāca sa tatheti yudhiṣṭhira ,
vatsye'haṁ yāvadutsāho bhavatyā nātra saṁśayaḥ.
70. brahmarṣiḥ tām atha uvāca saḥ tathā iti yudhiṣṭhira |
vatsye aham yāvat utsāhaḥ bhavatyāḥ na atra saṃśayaḥ
70. yudhiṣṭhira,
brahmarṣiḥ atha tām uvāca saḥ iti tathā aham yāvat bhavatyāḥ utsāhaḥ (asti),
(tāvat) vatsye atra saṃśayaḥ na (asti)
70. The royal sage (brahmarṣi) then said to her, "So be it," O Yudhishthira. "I shall reside here as long as your resolve (utsāha) endures; there is no doubt about this."
अथर्षिरभिसंप्रेक्ष्य स्त्रियं तां जरयान्विताम् ।
चिन्तां परमिकां भेजे संतप्त इव चाभवत् ॥७१॥
71. atharṣirabhisaṁprekṣya striyaṁ tāṁ jarayānvitām ,
cintāṁ paramikāṁ bheje saṁtapta iva cābhavat.
71. atha ṛṣiḥ abhisaṃprekṣya striyam tām jarayā anvitām
| cintām paramikām bheje saṃtaptaḥ iva ca abhavat
71. atha ṛṣiḥ jarayā anvitām tām striyam abhisaṃprekṣya
paramikām cintām bheje ca saṃtaptaḥ iva abhavat
71. Then the sage, having thoroughly observed that woman who was afflicted with old age, fell into deep worry and became as if tormented.
यद्यदङ्गं हि सोऽपश्यत्तस्या विप्रर्षभस्तदा ।
नारमत्तत्र तत्रास्य दृष्टी रूपपराजिता ॥७२॥
72. yadyadaṅgaṁ hi so'paśyattasyā viprarṣabhastadā ,
nāramattatra tatrāsya dṛṣṭī rūpaparājitā.
72. yat yat aṅgaṃ hi saḥ apaśyat tasyāḥ viprarṣabhaḥ
tadā | na aramat tatra tatra asya dṛṣṭī rūpaparājitā
72. tadā hi saḥ viprarṣabhaḥ tasyāḥ yat yat aṅgaṃ
apaśyat rūpaparājitā asya dṛṣṭī tatra tatra na aramat
72. Whatever part of her body the eminent brahmin (viprarṣabha) saw then, his two eyes, vanquished by her beauty, could not detach themselves from that very spot.
देवतेयं गृहस्यास्य शापान्नूनं विरूपिता ।
अस्याश्च कारणं वेत्तुं न युक्तं सहसा मया ॥७३॥
73. devateyaṁ gṛhasyāsya śāpānnūnaṁ virūpitā ,
asyāśca kāraṇaṁ vettuṁ na yuktaṁ sahasā mayā.
73. devatā iyaṃ gṛhasya asya śāpāt nūnaṃ virūpitā
| asyāḥ ca kāraṇaṃ vettuṃ na yuktaṃ sahasā mayā
73. iyaṃ asya gṛhasya devatā nūnaṃ śāpāt virūpitā
ca asyāḥ kāraṇaṃ vettuṃ mayā sahasā na yuktaṃ
73. This deity of this house has certainly been disfigured by a curse. And it is not proper for me to hastily ascertain the cause of her condition.
इति चिन्ताविषक्तस्य तमर्थं ज्ञातुमिच्छतः ।
व्यगमत्तदहःशेषं मनसा व्याकुलेन तु ॥७४॥
74. iti cintāviṣaktasya tamarthaṁ jñātumicchataḥ ,
vyagamattadahaḥśeṣaṁ manasā vyākulena tu.
74. iti cintāviṣaktasya taṃ arthaṃ jñātuṃ icchataḥ
| vyagamat tat ahaḥ śeṣaṃ manasā vyākulena tu
74. iti cintāviṣaktasya taṃ arthaṃ jñātuṃ icchataḥ

74. While he was absorbed in these thoughts, desiring to understand that matter, the remainder of that day passed with his mind greatly disturbed.
अथ सा स्त्री तदोवाच भगवन्पश्य वै रवेः ।
रूपं संध्याभ्रसंयुक्तं किमुपस्थाप्यतां तव ॥७५॥
75. atha sā strī tadovāca bhagavanpaśya vai raveḥ ,
rūpaṁ saṁdhyābhrasaṁyuktaṁ kimupasthāpyatāṁ tava.
75. atha sā strī tadā uvāca | bhagavan paśya vai raveḥ
| rūpaṃ sandhyābhrasaṃyuktaṃ kim upasthāpyatāṃ tava
75. atha sā strī tadā uvāca bhagavan vai raveḥ
sandhyābhrasaṃyuktaṃ rūpaṃ paśya tava kim upasthāpyatāṃ
75. Then that woman said, 'O revered one, behold the form of the sun, accompanied by the evening clouds. What shall be presented to you?'
स उवाच तदा तां स्त्रीं स्नानोदकमिहानय ।
उपासिष्ये ततः संध्यां वाग्यतो नियतेन्द्रियः ॥७६॥
76. sa uvāca tadā tāṁ strīṁ snānodakamihānaya ,
upāsiṣye tataḥ saṁdhyāṁ vāgyato niyatendriyaḥ.
76. sa uvāca tadā tām strīm snānodakam iha ānaya
upāsiṣye tataḥ saṃdhyām vāgyataḥ niyatendriyaḥ
76. sa tadā tām strīm uvāca iha snānodakam ānaya
tataḥ vāgyataḥ niyatendriyaḥ saṃdhyām upāsiṣye
76. He then said to that woman, "Bring the bath-water here. Then I shall perform the twilight worship (saṃdhyā) with speech restrained and senses controlled."
