नारद उवाच ।
गालवं वैनतेयोऽथ प्रहसन्निदमब्रवीत् ।
दिष्ट्या कृतार्थं पश्यामि भवन्तमिह वै द्विज ॥१॥
1. nārada uvāca ,
gālavaṁ vainateyo'tha prahasannidamabravīt ,
diṣṭyā kṛtārthaṁ paśyāmi bhavantamiha vai dvija.

1. Nārada said: Then the son of Vinatā (Garuḍa), laughing, said this to Gālava: 'Fortunately, I see you here, O Brahmin (dvija), with your purpose accomplished!'
गालवस्तु वचः श्रुत्वा वैनतेयेन भाषितम् ।
चतुर्भागावशिष्टं तदाचख्यौ कार्यमस्य हि ॥२॥
2. gālavastu vacaḥ śrutvā vainateyena bhāṣitam ,
caturbhāgāvaśiṣṭaṁ tadācakhyau kāryamasya hi.

caturbhāgāvaśiṣṭam tat ācakhyau kāryam asya hi
2. Having heard the words spoken by Vainateya (Garuda), Gālava then recounted the remaining one-fourth of his task.
सुपर्णस्त्वब्रवीदेनं गालवं पततां वरः ।
प्रयत्नस्ते न कर्तव्यो नैष संपत्स्यते तव ॥३॥
3. suparṇastvabravīdenaṁ gālavaṁ patatāṁ varaḥ ,
prayatnaste na kartavyo naiṣa saṁpatsyate tava.
3. suparṇaḥ tu abravīt enam gālavam patatām varaḥ
prayatnaḥ te na kartavyaḥ na eṣaḥ saṃpatsyate tava
3. But Suparṇa (Garuda), the best among flyers, said to Gālava, "You should not make this effort; it will not be accomplished for you."
पुरा हि कन्यकुब्जे वै गाधेः सत्यवतीं सुताम् ।
भार्यार्थेऽवरयत्कन्यामृचीकस्तेन भाषितः ॥४॥
4. purā hi kanyakubje vai gādheḥ satyavatīṁ sutām ,
bhāryārthe'varayatkanyāmṛcīkastena bhāṣitaḥ.

4. Indeed, long ago, in Kanyakubja, Ṛcīka sought Satyavatī, the daughter of Gādhi, as his wife; he then made this statement:
एकतःश्यामकर्णानां हयानां चन्द्रवर्चसाम् ।
भगवन्दीयतां मह्यं सहस्रमिति गालव ॥५॥
5. ekataḥśyāmakarṇānāṁ hayānāṁ candravarcasām ,
bhagavandīyatāṁ mahyaṁ sahasramiti gālava.
5. ekataḥ śyāmakarṇānām hayānām candravarcasām
bhagavan dīyatām mahyam sahasram iti gālava
5. (Ṛcīka said to Gādhi): 'O Lord, let a thousand horses, each with black ears and the brilliance of the moon, be given to me!'
ऋचीकस्तु तथेत्युक्त्वा वरुणस्यालयं गतः ।
अश्वतीर्थे हयाँल्लब्ध्वा दत्तवान्पार्थिवाय वै ॥६॥
6. ṛcīkastu tathetyuktvā varuṇasyālayaṁ gataḥ ,
aśvatīrthe hayāँllabdhvā dattavānpārthivāya vai.
6. ṛcīkaḥ tu tathā iti uktvā varuṇasya ālayam gataḥ
aśvatīrthe hayān labdhvā dattavān pārthivāya vai
6. Ricika, having agreed, went to Varuna's abode. At Aśvatīrtha, he obtained the horses and indeed gave them to the king.
इष्ट्वा ते पुण्डरीकेण दत्ता राज्ञा द्विजातिषु ।
तेभ्यो द्वे द्वे शते क्रीत्वा प्राप्तास्ते पार्थिवैस्तदा ॥७॥
7. iṣṭvā te puṇḍarīkeṇa dattā rājñā dvijātiṣu ,
tebhyo dve dve śate krītvā prāptāste pārthivaistadā.

7. rājñā puṇḍarīkeṇa iṣṭvā te dattā dvijātiṣu tadā

7. After the king had performed the Puṇḍarīka (a specific Vedic ritual), those gifts were distributed by him to the Brahmins. Subsequently, other rulers purchased two hundred of these items from each of those Brahmins, thus acquiring them.
अपराण्यपि चत्वारि शतानि द्विजसत्तम ।
नीयमानानि संतारे हृतान्यासन्वितस्तया ।
एवं न शक्यमप्राप्यं प्राप्तुं गालव कर्हिचित् ॥८॥
8. aparāṇyapi catvāri śatāni dvijasattama ,
nīyamānāni saṁtāre hṛtānyāsanvitastayā ,
evaṁ na śakyamaprāpyaṁ prāptuṁ gālava karhicit.
8. aparāṇi api catvāri śatāni
dvijasattama nīyamānāni saṃtāre hṛtāni
āsan vitastayā evam na śakyam
aprāpyam prāptum gālava karhicit
8. O best of the twice-born (dvijāti), another four hundred (horses), while being transported across the river, were carried away by Vitastā. In this way, O Gālava, it is never possible to obtain what is unobtainable.
इमामश्वशताभ्यां वै द्वाभ्यां तस्मै निवेदय ।
विश्वामित्राय धर्मात्मन्षड्भिरश्वशतैः सह ।
ततोऽसि गतसंमोहः कृतकृत्यो द्विजर्षभ ॥९॥
9. imāmaśvaśatābhyāṁ vai dvābhyāṁ tasmai nivedaya ,
viśvāmitrāya dharmātmanṣaḍbhiraśvaśataiḥ saha ,
tato'si gatasaṁmohaḥ kṛtakṛtyo dvijarṣabha.
9. imām aśvaśatābhyām vai dvābhyām tasmai
nivedaya viśvāmitrāya dharmātman
ṣaḍbhiḥ aśvaśataiḥ saha tataḥ asi
gatasaṃmohaḥ kṛtakṛtyaḥ dvijarṣabha
9. O righteous one (dharmātman), present this (girl) to Viśvāmitra along with two hundred horses and six hundred horses. Then, O best of the twice-born (dvijāti), you will be free from delusion and your task will be accomplished.
गालवस्तं तथेत्युक्त्वा सुपर्णसहितस्ततः ।
आदायाश्वांश्च कन्यां च विश्वामित्रमुपागमत् ॥१०॥
10. gālavastaṁ tathetyuktvā suparṇasahitastataḥ ,
ādāyāśvāṁśca kanyāṁ ca viśvāmitramupāgamat.
10. gālavaḥ tam tathā iti uktvā suparṇasahitaḥ tataḥ
ādāya aśvān ca kanyām ca viśvāmitram upāgamat
10. Having assented to him, Gālava, accompanied by Suparṇa, then took the horses and the maiden and approached Viśvāmitra.
गालव उवाच ।
अश्वानां काङ्क्षितार्थानां षडिमानि शतानि वै ।
शतद्वयेन कन्येयं भवता प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥११॥
11. gālava uvāca ,
aśvānāṁ kāṅkṣitārthānāṁ ṣaḍimāni śatāni vai ,
śatadvayena kanyeyaṁ bhavatā pratigṛhyatām.
11. gālavaḥ uvāca aśvānām kāṅkṣitārthānām ṣaṭ imāni śatāni
vai śatadvayena kanyā iyam bhavatā pratigṛhyatām
11. Gālava said: 'Here are these six hundred horses of the kind you desired. Let this maiden be accepted by you for two hundred (horses).'
अस्यां राजर्षिभिः पुत्रा जाता वै धार्मिकास्त्रयः ।
चतुर्थं जनयत्वेकं भवानपि नरोत्तम ॥१२॥
12. asyāṁ rājarṣibhiḥ putrā jātā vai dhārmikāstrayaḥ ,
caturthaṁ janayatvekaṁ bhavānapi narottama.
12. asyām rājarṣibhiḥ putrāḥ jātāḥ vai dhārmikāḥ trayaḥ
caturtham janayatu ekam bhavān api narottama
12. Indeed, three righteous (dharma) sons were born from her through royal sages (rājarṣis). O best of men, may you also father a fourth (son).
पूर्णान्येवं शतान्यष्टौ तुरगाणां भवन्तु ते ।
भवतो ह्यनृणो भूत्वा तपः कुर्यां यथासुखम् ॥१३॥
13. pūrṇānyevaṁ śatānyaṣṭau turagāṇāṁ bhavantu te ,
bhavato hyanṛṇo bhūtvā tapaḥ kuryāṁ yathāsukham.
13. pūrṇāni evam śatāni aṣṭau turagāṇām bhavantu te
bhavataḥ hi anṛṇaḥ bhūtvā tapaḥ kuryām yathāsukham
13. In this way, let these eight full hundreds of horses be yours. For then, having been freed from debt to you, I can perform my austerities (tapas) as I please.
नारद उवाच ।
विश्वामित्रस्तु तं दृष्ट्वा गालवं सह पक्षिणा ।
कन्यां च तां वरारोहामिदमित्यब्रवीद्वचः ॥१४॥
14. nārada uvāca ,
viśvāmitrastu taṁ dṛṣṭvā gālavaṁ saha pakṣiṇā ,
kanyāṁ ca tāṁ varārohāmidamityabravīdvacaḥ.
14. nāradaḥ uvāca viśvāmitraḥ tu tam dṛṣṭvā gālavaṃ saha
pakṣiṇā kanyām ca tām varārohām idam iti abravīt vacaḥ
14. Nārada said: Viśvāmitra, upon seeing Gālava along with the bird and that beautiful maiden, spoke these words.
किमियं पूर्वमेवेह न दत्ता मम गालव ।
पुत्रा ममैव चत्वारो भवेयुः कुलभावनाः ॥१५॥
15. kimiyaṁ pūrvameveha na dattā mama gālava ,
putrā mamaiva catvāro bhaveyuḥ kulabhāvanāḥ.
15. kim iyam pūrvam eva iha na dattā mama gālava
putrāḥ mama eva catvāraḥ bhaveyuḥ kulabhāvanāḥ
15. O Gālava, why was she not given to me earlier, right here? Then, four sons, who would perpetuate my lineage, could have been born to me.
प्रतिगृह्णामि ते कन्यामेकपुत्रफलाय वै ।
अश्वाश्चाश्रममासाद्य तिष्ठन्तु मम सर्वशः ॥१६॥
16. pratigṛhṇāmi te kanyāmekaputraphalāya vai ,
aśvāścāśramamāsādya tiṣṭhantu mama sarvaśaḥ.
16. pratigṛhṇāmi te kanyām ekaputraphalāya vai
aśvāḥ ca āśramam āsādya tiṣṭhantu mama sarvaśaḥ
16. I accept your daughter (kanyā) for the purpose of having one son. And indeed, let all the horses, having reached my hermitage (āśrama), remain there permanently.
स तया रममाणोऽथ विश्वामित्रो महाद्युतिः ।
आत्मजं जनयामास माधवीपुत्रमष्टकम् ॥१७॥
17. sa tayā ramamāṇo'tha viśvāmitro mahādyutiḥ ,
ātmajaṁ janayāmāsa mādhavīputramaṣṭakam.
17. saḥ tayā ramamāṇaḥ atha viśvāmitraḥ mahādyutiḥ
ātmajam janayāmāsa mādhavīputram aṣṭakam
17. Then, the glorious Viśvāmitra, delighting with her, begot his own son (ātmajam), Aṣṭaka, the son of Mādhavī.
जातमात्रं सुतं तं च विश्वामित्रो महाद्युतिः ।
संयोज्यार्थैस्तथा धर्मैरश्वैस्तैः समयोजयत् ॥१८॥
18. jātamātraṁ sutaṁ taṁ ca viśvāmitro mahādyutiḥ ,
saṁyojyārthaistathā dharmairaśvaistaiḥ samayojayat.
18. jātamātram sutam tam ca viśvāmitraḥ mahādyutiḥ saṃyojya
arthaiḥ tathā dharmaiḥ aśvaiḥ taiḥ samayojayat
18. The greatly radiant Viśvāmitra also endowed that son, as soon as he was born, with wealth, with righteous conduct (dharma), and with those very horses.
अथाष्टकः पुरं प्रायात्तदा सोमपुरप्रभम् ।
निर्यात्य कन्यां शिष्याय कौशिकोऽपि वनं ययौ ॥१९॥
19. athāṣṭakaḥ puraṁ prāyāttadā somapuraprabham ,
niryātya kanyāṁ śiṣyāya kauśiko'pi vanaṁ yayau.
19. atha aṣṭakaḥ puram prāyāt tadā somapuraprabham |
niryātya kanyām śiṣyāya kauśikaḥ api vanam yayau
19. Then Aṣṭaka went to the city, splendid like Somapura. Kauśika (Viśvāmitra), having returned the maiden (Madhavi) to his disciple (Gālava), also went to the forest.
गालवोऽपि सुपर्णेन सह निर्यात्य दक्षिणाम् ।
मनसाभिप्रतीतेन कन्यामिदमुवाच ह ॥२०॥
20. gālavo'pi suparṇena saha niryātya dakṣiṇām ,
manasābhipratītena kanyāmidamuvāca ha.
20. gālavaḥ api suparṇena saha niryātya dakṣiṇām
| manasā abhipratītena kanyām idam uvāca ha
20. Gālava also, having returned the teacher's fee (dakṣiṇā) with Suparṇa (Garuḍa), and being mentally satisfied, spoke this to the maiden (Madhavi).
जातो दानपतिः पुत्रस्त्वया शूरस्तथापरः ।
सत्यधर्मरतश्चान्यो यज्वा चापि तथापरः ॥२१॥
21. jāto dānapatiḥ putrastvayā śūrastathāparaḥ ,
satyadharmarataścānyo yajvā cāpi tathāparaḥ.
21. jātaḥ dānapatiḥ putraḥ tvayā śūraḥ tathā aparaḥ
satyadharmarataḥ ca anyaḥ yajvā ca api tathā aparaḥ
21. tvayā putraḥ jātaḥ dānapatiḥ tathā aparaḥ śūraḥ ca
anyaḥ satyadharmarataḥ ca api tathā aparaḥ yajvā
21. By you was born a son, a great giver (dānapati), and likewise another [son who is] a hero. And another [son is] devoted to truth and natural law (dharma), and yet another is a performer of Vedic rituals (yajña).
तदागच्छ वरारोहे तारितस्ते पिता सुतैः ।
चत्वारश्चैव राजानस्तथाहं च सुमध्यमे ॥२२॥
22. tadāgaccha varārohe tāritaste pitā sutaiḥ ,
catvāraścaiva rājānastathāhaṁ ca sumadhyame.
22. tadā āgaccha varārohe tāritaḥ te pitā sutaiḥ
catvāraḥ ca eva rājānaḥ tathā aham ca sumadhyame
22. Then come, O lady with beautiful hips. Your father has been rescued by his sons, and indeed by the four kings and by me, O slender-waisted one.
गालवस्त्वभ्यनुज्ञाय सुपर्णं पन्नगाशनम् ।
पितुर्निर्यात्य तां कन्यां प्रययौ वनमेव ह ॥२३॥
23. gālavastvabhyanujñāya suparṇaṁ pannagāśanam ,
piturniryātya tāṁ kanyāṁ prayayau vanameva ha.
23. gālavaḥ tu abhyanuñjñāya suparṇaṃ pannagāśanam
pituḥ niryātya tāṃ kanyāṃ prāyayau vanam eva ha
23. But Galava, having taken leave of Suparna, the eater of serpents (pannagāśana), and having returned that maiden to her father, truly departed for the forest.
