Sañjaya said: Having slain the king of Pragjyotisha, who was a constant and beloved friend of Indra and possessed immeasurable prowess, Partha (Arjuna) then performed a circumambulation (pradakṣiṇa).

Then, the two sons of the Gandhara king, the brothers Vrishaka and Achala, who were conquerors of enemy cities, advanced towards Arjuna in battle.

Those two heroic archers, having come upon Arjuna, severely pierced him from both front and back with extremely swift and sharp arrows.

Pārtha (Arjuna), with sharp arrows, utterly destroyed Vṛṣaka's horses, charioteer, bow, umbrella, chariot, and banner, as well as those of Saubala (Śakuni).

Then Arjuna, with showers of arrows and various other weapons, again made the Gāndhāras, who had Saubala (Śakuni) as their chief, confused and agitated.

Then, enraged, Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), with his arrows, dispatched five hundred brave Gāndhāra warriors, who had raised their weapons, to the world of death.

But the mighty-armed one (Arjuna), quickly dismounting from his chariot whose horses had been killed, ascended his brother's chariot and took another bow.

Your two great-souled brothers-in-law, the kings Vṛṣakācala, violently struck Arjuna, just as Vṛtra and Bala once struck Indra.

10.
Indeed, the two Gāndhāras, having hit their mark, struck Arjuna (the Pāṇḍava) again, just as the months of summer and the rainy season afflict the world with heat and water.

Arjuna destroyed that great weapon of darkness with a mighty weapon of light. When that (darkness weapon) was destroyed, terrifying floods of water appeared.

Then, to destroy that water, Arjuna deployed the Āditya (Sun) weapon. Consequently, most of the water was dried up by that weapon.

Thus, Arjuna, laughing, swiftly destroyed with the power of his weapons the many kinds of illusions (māyā) that Saubala (Shakuni) had created one after another.

27.
Thus, with his illusions (māyā) destroyed, Shakuni, terrified and wounded by Arjuna's arrows, fled on swift horses like an ordinary person.

Then Arjuna, displaying his preeminence in archery to his enemies, showered the Kaurava army with a volley of arrows.

That army of your son, O great king, being struck by Arjuna, became divided, like the Gaṅgā river encountering a mountain.

Some of the great charioteers there, O king, being afflicted by Arjuna (kirīṭin), retreated towards Droṇa, while others retreated towards Duryodhana.

Then I could not see that army, for it was indeed enveloped in darkness; and the roar of Gāṇḍīva (Arjuna's bow) was heard by me from the south.

The roar of conchs and drums, the sound of other instruments, and the twang of Gāṇḍīva (Arjuna's bow), surpassing everything, reached the sky.

Then again, a battle of skillful warriors ensued from the south. Arjuna fought well, but I followed Droṇa.

O Bhārata (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), Arjuna, in due course, scattered the various armies of your sons, just as the wind scatters clouds in the sky.

Greatly distressed, your warriors, being struck by Arjuna (Pārtha), became so distraught that many of them, fleeing here and there, ended up killing their own comrades.

The body-piercing arrows, feathered with heron plumes, that were released by Arjuna, descended like swarms of locusts, completely covering all ten directions.

O respected one, those arrows, after piercing through horses, chariot-warriors, elephants, and even foot-soldiers, then penetrated the earth, just as snakes enter an anthill.

And he (Arjuna) did not need to release a second arrow upon elephants, horses, or men; for each of them, struck by a single arrow, fell down lifeless.

Then, the battlefield, a strange sight, resounded with the cries of dogs, jackals, and vultures. It was filled with men, horses, and elephants, slain and brought down from all sides, all having been showered with arrows.

A father abandons his son, and a friend abandons a dear friend. Likewise, a son, tormented by arrows, abandons his father. Then, people, solely intent on their own self-preservation, and tormented by Pārtha, abandon even their mounts.
