घटोत्कचे तु निहते सूतपुत्रेण तां निशाम् ।
दुःखामर्षवशं प्राप्तो धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥१॥

1. Sañjaya said: That night, after Ghatotkaca was killed by Karṇa, the son of Sūta, Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of the natural law (dharma), was overcome by grief and indignation.
दृष्ट्व भीमेन महतीं वार्यमाणां चमूं तव ।
धृष्टद्युम्नमुवाचेदं कुम्भयोनिं निवारय ॥२॥
2. dṛṣṭva bhīmena mahatīṁ vāryamāṇāṁ camūṁ tava ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnamuvācedaṁ kumbhayoniṁ nivāraya.

2. Having seen your mighty army being checked by Bhīma, (Yudhiṣṭhira) said this to Dhṛṣṭadyumna: "Restrain Droṇa!"
त्वं हि द्रोणविनाशाय समुत्पन्नो हुताशनात् ।
सशरः कवची खड्गी धन्वी च परतापनः ।
अभिद्रव रणे हृष्टो न च ते भीः कथंचन ॥३॥
3. tvaṁ hi droṇavināśāya samutpanno hutāśanāt ,
saśaraḥ kavacī khaḍgī dhanvī ca paratāpanaḥ ,
abhidrava raṇe hṛṣṭo na ca te bhīḥ kathaṁcana.

3. Indeed, you were born from fire for the destruction of Droṇa. You are armed with arrows, armor, a sword, and a bow, and you torment your enemies. Attack in battle, joyful, and let there be no fear for you whatsoever.
जनमेजयः शिखण्डी च दौर्मुखिश्च यशोधनः ।
अभिद्रवन्तु संहृष्टाः कुम्भयोनिं समन्ततः ॥४॥
4. janamejayaḥ śikhaṇḍī ca daurmukhiśca yaśodhanaḥ ,
abhidravantu saṁhṛṣṭāḥ kumbhayoniṁ samantataḥ.

4. Let Janamejaya, Śikhaṇḍī, Daurmukhi, and Yaśodhana, all greatly delighted, attack Droṇa from all sides.
नकुलः सहदेवश्च द्रौपदेयाः प्रभद्रकाः ।
द्रुपदश्च विराटश्च पुत्रभ्रातृसमन्वितौ ॥५॥
5. nakulaḥ sahadevaśca draupadeyāḥ prabhadrakāḥ ,
drupadaśca virāṭaśca putrabhrātṛsamanvitau.

5. Nakula and Sahadeva, as well as the valiant sons of Draupadi, and Drupada and Virata, accompanied by their sons and brothers.
सात्यकिः केकयाश्चैव पाण्डवश्च धनंजयः ।
अभिद्रवन्तु वेगेन भारद्वाजवधेप्सया ॥६॥
6. sātyakiḥ kekayāścaiva pāṇḍavaśca dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
abhidravantu vegena bhāradvājavadhepsayā.

6. Satyaki, the Kekayas, and indeed the Pāṇḍava Dhananjaya (Arjuna) himself, should charge swiftly, desirous of slaying the son of Bharadvāja (Droṇa).
तथैव रथिनः सर्वे हस्त्यश्वं यच्च किंचन ।
पादाताश्च रणे द्रोणं प्रापयन्तु महारथम् ॥७॥
7. tathaiva rathinaḥ sarve hastyaśvaṁ yacca kiṁcana ,
pādātāśca raṇe droṇaṁ prāpayantu mahāratham.

7. Likewise, all the charioteers and foot soldiers should bring the great warrior Droṇa, the elephant and horse forces, and whatever else there may be, into battle.
तथाज्ञप्तास्तु ते सर्वे पाण्डवेन महात्मना ।
अभ्यद्रवन्त वेगेन कुम्भयोनिं युयुत्सया ॥८॥
8. tathājñaptāstu te sarve pāṇḍavena mahātmanā ,
abhyadravanta vegena kumbhayoniṁ yuyutsayā.

abhyadravanta vegena kumbhayonim yuyutsayā

8. Thus commanded by the great-souled Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), all of them swiftly charged towards Droṇa, the pot-born, with an eagerness for battle.
आगच्छतस्तान्सहसा सर्वोद्योगेन पाण्डवान् ।
प्रतिजग्राह समरे द्रोणः शस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥९॥
9. āgacchatastānsahasā sarvodyogena pāṇḍavān ,
pratijagrāha samare droṇaḥ śastrabhṛtāṁ varaḥ.

9. Drona, the foremost among weapon-bearers, swiftly confronted the Pandavas who were advancing with their full strength in battle.
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा सर्वोद्योगेन पाण्डवान् ।
अभ्यद्रवत्सुसंक्रुद्ध इच्छन्द्रोणस्य जीवितम् ॥१०॥
10. tato duryodhano rājā sarvodyogena pāṇḍavān ,
abhyadravatsusaṁkruddha icchandroṇasya jīvitam.
10. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ rājā sarvodyogena pāṇḍavān
abhyadravat susaṃkruddhaḥ icchan droṇasya jīvitam
10. tataḥ rājā duryodhanaḥ susaṃkruddhaḥ droṇasya
jīvitam icchan sarvodyogena pāṇḍavān abhyadravat
10. Then King Duryodhana, greatly enraged and desiring Drona's life, rushed towards the Pandavas with all his might.
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं श्रान्तवाहनसैनिकम् ।
पाण्डवानां कुरूणां च गर्जतामितरेतरम् ॥११॥
11. tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṁ śrāntavāhanasainikam ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ kurūṇāṁ ca garjatāmitaretaram.
11. tataḥ pravavṛte yuddham śrāntavāhanasainikam
pāṇḍavānām kurūṇām ca garjatām itaretaram

11. Then a battle ensued, one in which both mounts and soldiers were exhausted, between the Pandavas and the Kurus, who were roaring at each other.
निद्रान्धास्ते महाराज परिश्रान्ताश्च संयुगे ।
नाभ्यपद्यन्त समरे कांचिच्चेष्टां महारथाः ॥१२॥
12. nidrāndhāste mahārāja pariśrāntāśca saṁyuge ,
nābhyapadyanta samare kāṁcicceṣṭāṁ mahārathāḥ.
12. nidrāndhāḥ te mahārāja pariśrāntāḥ ca saṃyuge na
abhyapadyanta samare kāṃcit ceṣṭām mahārathāḥ
12. mahārāja,
te mahārathāḥ nidrāndhāḥ ca saṃyuge pariśrāntāḥ samare kāṃcit ceṣṭām na abhyapadyanta
12. O great king, those great warriors, being blinded by sleep and utterly exhausted from the combat, could not accomplish any significant action in battle.
त्रियामा रजनी चैषा घोररूपा भयानका ।
सहस्रयामप्रतिमा बभूव प्राणहारिणी ।
वध्यतां च तथा तेषां क्षतानां च विशेषतः ॥१३॥
13. triyāmā rajanī caiṣā ghorarūpā bhayānakā ,
sahasrayāmapratimā babhūva prāṇahāriṇī ,
vadhyatāṁ ca tathā teṣāṁ kṣatānāṁ ca viśeṣataḥ.
13. triyāmā rajanī ca eṣā ghorarūpā
bhayānakā | sahasrayāmapratimā
babhūva prāṇahāriṇī | vadhyatām ca
tathā teṣām kṣatānām ca viśeṣataḥ
13. eṣā triyāmā ghorarūpā bhayānakā

13. This night, which lasted three watches, became terrifying in form, dreadful, and seemed to resemble a thousand watches, consuming lives. And so, among them, especially the wounded, were being killed.
अहो रात्रिः समाजज्ञे निद्रान्धानां विशेषतः ।
सर्वे ह्यासन्निरुत्साहाः क्षत्रिया दीनचेतसः ।
तव चैव परेषां च गतास्त्रा विगतेषवः ॥१४॥
14. aho rātriḥ samājajñe nidrāndhānāṁ viśeṣataḥ ,
sarve hyāsannirutsāhāḥ kṣatriyā dīnacetasaḥ ,
tava caiva pareṣāṁ ca gatāstrā vigateṣavaḥ.
14. aho rātriḥ samājajñe nidrāndhānām
viśeṣataḥ | sarve hi āsan nirutsāhāḥ
kṣatriyāḥ dīnacetasaḥ | tava ca
eva pareṣām ca gatāstrāḥ vigateṣavaḥ

samājajñe hi sarve kṣatriyāḥ tava
ca eva pareṣām ca nirutsāhāḥ
dīnacetasaḥ gatāstrāḥ vigateṣavaḥ āsan
14. Alas, night fell, especially upon those blinded by sleep. Indeed, all the kṣatriyas, both on your side and the enemy's, were disheartened and devoid of enthusiasm, having lost their weapons and arrows.
ते तथा पारयन्तश्च ह्रीमन्तश्च विशेषतः ।
स्वधर्ममनुपश्यन्तो न जहुः स्वामनीकिनीम् ॥१५॥
15. te tathā pārayantaśca hrīmantaśca viśeṣataḥ ,
svadharmamanupaśyanto na jahuḥ svāmanīkinīm.
15. te tathā pārayantaḥ ca hrīmantaḥ ca viśeṣataḥ |
svadharmam anupaśyantaḥ na jahuḥ svām anīkinīm
15. tathā te pārayantaḥ ca hrīmantaḥ ca viśeṣataḥ
svadharmam anupaśyantaḥ svām anīkinīm na jahuḥ
15. Thus, they, particularly those who were enduring and conscientious, considering their own natural law (dharma), did not abandon their army.
शस्त्राण्यन्ये समुत्सृज्य निद्रान्धाः शेरते जनाः ।
गजेष्वन्ये रथेष्वन्ये हयेष्वन्ये च भारत ॥१६॥
16. śastrāṇyanye samutsṛjya nidrāndhāḥ śerate janāḥ ,
gajeṣvanye ratheṣvanye hayeṣvanye ca bhārata.
16. śastrāṇi anye samutsṛjya nidrāndhāḥ śerate janāḥ
| gajeṣu anye ratheṣu anye hayeṣu anye ca bhārata
16. bhārata,
anye janāḥ nidrāndhāḥ śastrāṇi samutsṛjya śerate anye gajeṣu,
anye ratheṣu,
anye ca hayeṣu
16. O Bhārata, some people, blinded by sleep, have cast aside their weapons and are sleeping. Others are sleeping on elephants, others on chariots, and still others on horses.
निद्रान्धा नो बुबुधिरे कांचिच्चेष्टां नराधिपाः ।
तेऽन्योन्यं समरे योधाः प्रेषयन्त यमक्षयम् ॥१७॥
17. nidrāndhā no bubudhire kāṁcicceṣṭāṁ narādhipāḥ ,
te'nyonyaṁ samare yodhāḥ preṣayanta yamakṣayam.
17. nidrāndhāḥ no bubudhire kāṃcit ceṣṭām narādhipāḥ
te anyonyam samare yodhāḥ preṣayanta yamakṣayam
17. narādhipāḥ nidrāndhāḥ kāṃcit ceṣṭām no bubudhire
te yodhāḥ samare anyonyam yamakṣayam preṣayanta
17. The kings, blinded by sleep, did not perceive any movement. In that battle, those warriors sent each other to the abode of Yama (yamakṣayam), meaning death.
स्वप्नायमानास्त्वपरे परानिति विचेतसः ।
आत्मानं समरे जघ्नुः स्वानेव च परानपि ॥१८॥
18. svapnāyamānāstvapare parāniti vicetasaḥ ,
ātmānaṁ samare jaghnuḥ svāneva ca parānapi.
18. svapnāyamānāḥ tu apare parān iti vicetasaḥ
ātmānam samare jaghnuḥ svān eva ca parān api
18. apare tu vicetasaḥ svapnāyamānāḥ parān iti
samare ātmānam jaghnuḥ ca svān eva parān api
18. Still others, confused and as if dreaming, thought, "These are enemies!" and killed themselves (ātman) in battle. They also killed their own people as well as others.
नानावाचो विमुञ्चन्तो निद्रान्धास्ते महारणे ।
योद्धव्यमिति तिष्ठन्तो निद्रासंसक्तलोचनाः ॥१९॥
19. nānāvāco vimuñcanto nidrāndhāste mahāraṇe ,
yoddhavyamiti tiṣṭhanto nidrāsaṁsaktalocanāḥ.
19. nānāvācaḥ vimuñcantaḥ nidrāndhāḥ te mahāraṇe
yoddhavyam iti tiṣṭhantaḥ nidrāsansaktalocanāḥ
19. te nidrāndhāḥ nidrāsansaktalocanāḥ mahāraṇe
nānāvācaḥ vimuñcantaḥ yoddhavyam iti tiṣṭhantaḥ
19. In that great battle, those sleep-blinded warriors, with eyes heavy with sleep, stood there uttering various cries, thinking, "We must fight!"
संमर्द्यान्ये रणे केचिन्निद्रान्धाश्च परस्परम् ।
जघ्नुः शूरा रणे राजंस्तस्मिंस्तमसि दारुणे ॥२०॥
20. saṁmardyānye raṇe kecinnidrāndhāśca parasparam ,
jaghnuḥ śūrā raṇe rājaṁstasmiṁstamasi dāruṇe.
20. saṃmardya anye raṇe kecit nidrāndhāḥ ca parasparam
jaghnuḥ śūrāḥ raṇe rājan tasmin tamasi dāruṇe
20. rājan tasmin dāruṇe tamasi raṇe kecit nidrāndhāḥ
śūrāḥ anye saṃmardya ca parasparam jaghnuḥ
20. O King, in that terrible darkness and battle, some sleep-blinded, brave warriors, crushing others, struck each other.
हन्यमानं तथात्मानं परेभ्यो बहवो जनाः ।
नाभ्यजानन्त समरे निद्रया मोहिता भृशम् ॥२१॥
21. hanyamānaṁ tathātmānaṁ parebhyo bahavo janāḥ ,
nābhyajānanta samare nidrayā mohitā bhṛśam.
21. hanyamānam tathā ātmānam parebhyaḥ bahavaḥ janāḥ
na abhyajānanta samare nidrayā mohitāḥ bhṛśam
21. bahavaḥ janāḥ nidrayā bhṛśam mohitāḥ samare
parebhyaḥ hanyamānam tathā ātmānam na abhyajānanta
21. Many people, greatly bewildered by sleep, thus did not recognize their own selves (ātman) being slain by the enemies in battle.
तेषामेतादृशीं चेष्टां विज्ञाय पुरुषर्षभः ।
उवाच वाक्यं बीभत्सुरुच्चैः संनादयन्दिशः ॥२२॥
22. teṣāmetādṛśīṁ ceṣṭāṁ vijñāya puruṣarṣabhaḥ ,
uvāca vākyaṁ bībhatsuruccaiḥ saṁnādayandiśaḥ.
22. teṣām etādṛśīm ceṣṭām vijñāya puruṣarṣabhaḥ
uvāca vākyam bībhatsuḥ uccaiḥ saṃnādayan diśaḥ
22. puruṣarṣabhaḥ bībhatsuḥ teṣām etādṛśīm ceṣṭām
vijñāya uccaiḥ diśaḥ saṃnādayan vākyam uvāca
22. Having observed their such condition, the best among men (puruṣarṣabha) [Arjuna], feeling disgusted, spoke loudly, making the directions resound.
श्रान्ता भवन्तो निद्रान्धाः सर्व एव सवाहनाः ।
तमसा चावृते सैन्ये रजसा बहुलेन च ॥२३॥
23. śrāntā bhavanto nidrāndhāḥ sarva eva savāhanāḥ ,
tamasā cāvṛte sainye rajasā bahulena ca.
23. śrāntāḥ bhavantaḥ nidrāndhāḥ sarve eva sa-vāhanāḥ
tamasā ca āvṛte sainye rajasā bahulena ca
23. bhavantaḥ sarve eva sa-vāhanāḥ śrāntāḥ nidrāndhāḥ.
ca sainye tamasā ca bahulena rajasā āvṛte.
23. You are all exhausted and blinded by sleep, along with your mounts. Moreover, the army is enveloped by darkness and by dense dust.
ते यूयं यदि मन्यध्वमुपारमत सैनिकाः ।
निमीलयत चात्रैव रणभूमौ मुहूर्तकम् ॥२४॥
24. te yūyaṁ yadi manyadhvamupāramata sainikāḥ ,
nimīlayata cātraiva raṇabhūmau muhūrtakam.
24. te yūyam yadi manyadhvam upāramata sainikāḥ
nimīlayata ca atra eva raṇa-bhūmau muhūrtakam
24. te yūyam sainikāḥ yadi manyadhvam,
upāramata.
ca atra eva raṇa-bhūmau muhūrtakam nimīlayata.
24. Therefore, you soldiers, if you agree, cease [fighting] and close your eyes right here on the battlefield for a moment.
ततो विनिद्रा विश्रान्ताश्चन्द्रमस्युदिते पुनः ।
संसाधयिष्यथान्योन्यं स्वर्गाय कुरुपाण्डवाः ॥२५॥
25. tato vinidrā viśrāntāścandramasyudite punaḥ ,
saṁsādhayiṣyathānyonyaṁ svargāya kurupāṇḍavāḥ.
25. tataḥ vinidrāḥ viśrāntāḥ candramasi udite punaḥ
saṃsādhayiṣyatha anyonyam svargāya kurupāṇḍavāḥ
25. kurupāṇḍavāḥ tataḥ candramasi udite punaḥ vinidrāḥ
viśrāntāḥ anyonyam svargāya saṃsādhayiṣyatha
25. Then, O Kurus and Pandavas, when the moon has risen again, you will be fully awake and rested, and you will fight each other for the sake of heaven (svarga).
तद्वचः सर्वधर्मज्ञा धार्मिकस्य निशम्य ते ।
अरोचयन्त सैन्यानि तथा चान्योन्यमब्रुवन् ॥२६॥
26. tadvacaḥ sarvadharmajñā dhārmikasya niśamya te ,
arocayanta sainyāni tathā cānyonyamabruvan.
26. tat vacaḥ sarvadharmajñāḥ dhārmikasya niśamya te
arocayanta sainyāni tathā ca anyonyam abruvan
26. te sarvadharmajñāḥ dhārmikasya tat vacaḥ niśamya
sainyāni arocayanta tathā ca anyonyam abruvan
26. Having heard that speech of the righteous one, those knowers of all natural law (dharma) approved of the armies and thus spoke to each other.
चुक्रुशुः कर्ण कर्णेति राजन्दुर्योधनेति च ।
उपारमत पाण्डूनां विरता हि वरूथिनी ॥२७॥
27. cukruśuḥ karṇa karṇeti rājanduryodhaneti ca ,
upāramata pāṇḍūnāṁ viratā hi varūthinī.
27. cukruśuḥ karṇa karṇa iti rājan duryodhana
iti ca upāramata pāṇḍūnām viratā hi varūthinī
27. rājan te karṇa karṇa iti duryodhana iti ca
cukruśuḥ pāṇḍūnām hi varūthinī viratā upāramata
27. O king (rājan), they cried out, 'Karṇa! Karṇa!' and 'Duryodhana!' Indeed, the army of the Pandavas had ceased (fighting) and withdrawn.
तथा विक्रोशमानस्य फल्गुनस्य ततस्ततः ।
उपारमत पाण्डूनां सेना तव च भारत ॥२८॥
28. tathā vikrośamānasya phalgunasya tatastataḥ ,
upāramata pāṇḍūnāṁ senā tava ca bhārata.
28. tathā vikrośamānasya phālgunasya tataḥ tataḥ
upāramata pāṇḍūnām senā tava ca bhārata
28. bhārata tathā phālgunasya tatastataḥ
vikrośamānasya pāṇḍūnām ca tava senā upāramata
28. Thus, while Arjuna was loudly crying out from various directions, both the army of the Pandavas and your army, O descendant of Bharata (Bhārata), ceased (fighting).
तामस्य वाचं देवाश्च ऋषयश्च महात्मनः ।
सर्वसैन्यानि चाक्षुद्राः प्रहृष्टाः प्रत्यपूजयन् ॥२९॥
29. tāmasya vācaṁ devāśca ṛṣayaśca mahātmanaḥ ,
sarvasainyāni cākṣudrāḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ pratyapūjayan.
29. tām asya vācam devāḥ ca ṛṣayaḥ ca mahātmanaḥ
sarvasainyāni ca akṣudrāḥ prahr̥ṣṭāḥ pratyapūjayan
29. devāḥ ca mahātmanaḥ ṛṣayaḥ ca sarvasainyāni ca
akṣudrāḥ prahr̥ṣṭāḥ asya tām vācam pratyapūjayan
29. Both the gods and the great-souled (mahātmanaḥ) sages, along with all the mighty (akṣudrāḥ) armies, delighted, acclaimed his speech in return.
तत्संपूज्य वचोऽक्रूरं सर्वसैन्यानि भारत ।
मुहूर्तमस्वपन्राजञ्श्रान्तानि भरतर्षभ ॥३०॥
30. tatsaṁpūjya vaco'krūraṁ sarvasainyāni bhārata ,
muhūrtamasvapanrājañśrāntāni bharatarṣabha.
30. tat sampūjya vacaḥ akrūram sarvasainyāni bhārata
muhūrtam asvapan rājan śrāntāni bharatarṣabha
30. bhārata rājan bharatarṣabha,
sarvasainyāni śrāntāni tat akrūram vacaḥ sampūjya muhūrtam asvapan
30. O Bhārata, O King, best among the Bhāratas (bharatarṣabha), having acclaimed that speech of Akrūra, all the weary (śrāntāni) armies then slept for a moment.
सा तु संप्राप्य विश्रामं ध्वजिनी तव भारत ।
सुखमाप्तवती वीरमर्जुनं प्रत्यपूजयत् ॥३१॥
31. sā tu saṁprāpya viśrāmaṁ dhvajinī tava bhārata ,
sukhamāptavatī vīramarjunaṁ pratyapūjayat.
31. sā tu samprapya viśrāmam dhvajinī tava bhārata
sukham āptavatī vīram arjunam pratyapūjayat
31. bhārata,
tava sā dhvajinī tu viśrāmam samprāpya sukham āptavatī,
vīram arjunam pratyapūjayat
31. But that army (dhvajinī) of yours, O Bhārata, having comfortably obtained rest (viśrāmam), then honored the hero Arjuna in return.
त्वयि वेदास्तथास्त्राणि त्वयि बुद्धिपराक्रमौ ।
धर्मस्त्वयि महाबाहो दया भूतेषु चानघ ॥३२॥
32. tvayi vedāstathāstrāṇi tvayi buddhiparākramau ,
dharmastvayi mahābāho dayā bhūteṣu cānagha.
32. tvayi vedāḥ tathā astrāṇi tvayi buddhiparākramau
dharmaḥ tvayi mahābāho dayā bhūteṣu ca anagha
32. mahābāho anagha,
tvayi vedāḥ tathā astrāṇi,
tvayi buddhiparākramau,
ca tvayi dharmaḥ bhūteṣu dayā
32. O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), O sinless one (anagha), in you are the Vedas and the knowledge of weapons (astrāṇi). In you are intelligence and valor. And in you are the natural law (dharma) and compassion for all beings.
यच्चाश्वस्तास्तवेच्छामः शर्म पार्थ तदस्तु ते ।
मनसश्च प्रियानर्थान्वीर क्षिप्रमवाप्नुहि ॥३३॥
33. yaccāśvastāstavecchāmaḥ śarma pārtha tadastu te ,
manasaśca priyānarthānvīra kṣipramavāpnuhi.
33. yat ca āśvastāḥ tava icchāmaḥ śarma pārtha tat astu
te manasaḥ ca priyān arthān vīra kṣipram avāpnuhi
33. pārtha vīra ca āśvastāḥ yat tava icchāmaḥ tat śarma
te astu ca manasaḥ priyān arthān kṣipram avāpnuhi
33. And being reassured, whatever we wish for you, O Pārtha, may that well-being be yours. And O hero, quickly attain the cherished objects of your heart.
इति ते तं नरव्याघ्रं प्रशंसन्तो महारथाः ।
निद्रया समवाक्षिप्तास्तूष्णीमासन्विशां पते ॥३४॥
34. iti te taṁ naravyāghraṁ praśaṁsanto mahārathāḥ ,
nidrayā samavākṣiptāstūṣṇīmāsanviśāṁ pate.
34. iti te tam naravyāghram praśaṃsantaḥ mahārathāḥ
nidrayā samavākṣiptāḥ tūṣṇīm āsan viśām pate
34. viśām pate iti praśaṃsantaḥ te mahārathāḥ tam

34. Thus, those great chariot-warriors, praising that tiger among men (Arjuna), fell silent, overcome by sleep, O lord of men.
अश्वपृष्ठेषु चाप्यन्ये रथनीडेषु चापरे ।
गजस्कन्धगताश्चान्ये शेरते चापरे क्षितौ ॥३५॥
35. aśvapṛṣṭheṣu cāpyanye rathanīḍeṣu cāpare ,
gajaskandhagatāścānye śerate cāpare kṣitau.
35. aśvapṛṣṭheṣu ca api anye rathanīḍeṣu ca apare
gajaskandhagatāḥ ca anye śerate ca apare kṣitau
35. ca anye aśvapṛṣṭheṣu api ca apare rathanīḍeṣu
ca anye gajaskandhagatāḥ śerate ca apare kṣitau
35. And some lay on horses' backs, while others in chariot compartments. Still others were seated on elephants' shoulders, and yet others slept on the ground.
सायुधाः सगदाश्चैव सखड्गाः सपरश्वधाः ।
सप्रासकवचाश्चान्ये नराः सुप्ताः पृथक्पृथक् ॥३६॥
36. sāyudhāḥ sagadāścaiva sakhaḍgāḥ saparaśvadhāḥ ,
saprāsakavacāścānye narāḥ suptāḥ pṛthakpṛthak.
36. sa-āyudhāḥ sa-gadāḥ ca eva sa-khaḍgāḥ sa-paraśvadhāḥ
sa-prāsakavacāḥ ca anye narāḥ suptāḥ pṛthak pṛthak

36. Some men, armed with weapons, with maces, and with swords, with axes, and others with spears and armor, slept scattered about.
गजास्ते पन्नगाभोगैर्हस्तैर्भूरेणुरूषितैः ।
निद्रान्धा वसुधां चक्रुर्घ्राणनिःश्वासशीतलाम् ॥३७॥
37. gajāste pannagābhogairhastairbhūreṇurūṣitaiḥ ,
nidrāndhā vasudhāṁ cakrurghrāṇaniḥśvāsaśītalām.
37. gajāḥ te pannagābhogaiḥ hastaiḥ bhūreṇurūṣitaiḥ
nidrāndhāḥ vasudhām cakruḥ ghrāṇaniḥśvāsasītalām

37. Those elephants, drowsy and their trunks resembling the bodies of snakes and covered with the dust of the earth, made the ground cool with the breath from their nostrils.
गजाः शुशुभिरे तत्र निःश्वसन्तो महीतले ।
विशीर्णा गिरयो यद्वन्निःश्वसद्भिर्महोरगैः ॥३८॥
38. gajāḥ śuśubhire tatra niḥśvasanto mahītale ,
viśīrṇā girayo yadvanniḥśvasadbhirmahoragaiḥ.

38. The elephants, sighing deeply on the ground, looked splendid there, just as disintegrated mountains appear (magnificent) with great, sighing serpents.
समां च विषमां चक्रुः खुराग्रैर्विक्षतां महीम् ।
हयाः काञ्चनयोक्त्राश्च केसरालम्बिभिर्युगैः ।
सुषुपुस्तत्र राजेन्द्र युक्ता वाहेषु सर्वशः ॥३९॥
39. samāṁ ca viṣamāṁ cakruḥ khurāgrairvikṣatāṁ mahīm ,
hayāḥ kāñcanayoktrāśca kesarālambibhiryugaiḥ ,
suṣupustatra rājendra yuktā vāheṣu sarvaśaḥ.

39. O king of kings (rājendra), the horses, adorned with golden harnesses and with yokes hanging from their manes, trampled the ground with the tips of their hooves, making the torn earth both level and uneven. They slept there, fully harnessed to their conveyances everywhere.
तत्तथा निद्रया भग्नमवाचमस्वपद्बलम् ।
कुशलैरिव विन्यस्तं पटे चित्रमिवाद्भुतम् ॥४०॥
40. tattathā nidrayā bhagnamavācamasvapadbalam ,
kuśalairiva vinyastaṁ paṭe citramivādbhutam.
40. tat tathā nidrayā bhagnam avācam asvapat balam
kuśalaiḥ iva vinyastam paṭe citram iva adbhutam
40. nidrayā bhagnam avācam tat balam tathā asvapat,
iva kuśalaiḥ paṭe vinyastam adbhutam citram iva
40. That army, thus overcome by sleep and silent, slept as if it were a wonderful painting, skillfully arranged on a canvas.
ते क्षत्रियाः कुण्डलिनो युवानः परस्परं सायकविक्षताङ्गाः ।
कुम्भेषु लीनाः सुषुपुर्गजानां कुचेषु लग्ना इव कामिनीनाम् ॥४१॥
41. te kṣatriyāḥ kuṇḍalino yuvānaḥ; parasparaṁ sāyakavikṣatāṅgāḥ ,
kumbheṣu līnāḥ suṣupurgajānāṁ; kuceṣu lagnā iva kāminīnām.
41. te kṣatriyāḥ kuṇḍalinaḥ yuvānaḥ parasparam sāyakavikṣatāṅgāḥ
kumbheṣu līnāḥ suṣupuḥ gajānām kuceṣu lagnāḥ iva kāminīnām

41. Those young Kṣatriya warriors, wearing earrings and with bodies wounded by each other's arrows, lay (slept/died) on the frontal globes of elephants as if clinging to the breasts of women.
ततः कुमुदनाथेन कामिनीगण्डपाण्डुना ।
नेत्रानन्देन चन्द्रेण माहेन्द्री दिगलंकृता ॥४२॥
42. tataḥ kumudanāthena kāminīgaṇḍapāṇḍunā ,
netrānandena candreṇa māhendrī digalaṁkṛtā.

42. Then, the eastern direction (māhendrī dik) was adorned by the moon, which was the lord of water lilies, as pale as the cheek of a beloved woman, and a delight to the eyes.
ततो मुहूर्ताद्भगवान्पुरस्ताच्छशलक्षणः ।
अरुणं दर्शयामास ग्रसञ्ज्योतिःप्रभं प्रभुः ॥४३॥
43. tato muhūrtādbhagavānpurastācchaśalakṣaṇaḥ ,
aruṇaṁ darśayāmāsa grasañjyotiḥprabhaṁ prabhuḥ.
43. tataḥ muhūrtāt bhagavān purastāt śasalakṣaṇaḥ
aruṇam darśayāmāsa grasan jyotiḥprabham prabhuḥ

43. Then, after a moment, the glorious lord (the moon), marked with a hare (śasalakṣaṇa), from the east, caused the dawn (aruṇa) to appear, while at the same time obscuring its own luminous splendor (jyotiḥprabham).
अरुणस्य तु तस्यानु जातरूपसमप्रभम् ।
रश्मिजालं महच्चन्द्रो मन्दं मन्दमवासृजत् ॥४४॥
44. aruṇasya tu tasyānu jātarūpasamaprabham ,
raśmijālaṁ mahaccandro mandaṁ mandamavāsṛjat.

raśmijālam mahat candraḥ mandam mandam avasṛjat
44. tu tasya aruṇasya anu mahān candraḥ
jātarūpasamaprabham raśmijālam mandam mandam avasṛjat
44. But after that (Aruna), the great moon slowly and gradually released a network of rays that possessed a splendor equal to gold.
उत्सारयन्तः प्रभया तमस्ते चन्द्ररश्मयः ।
पर्यगच्छञ्शनैः सर्वा दिशः खं च क्षितिं तथा ॥४५॥
45. utsārayantaḥ prabhayā tamaste candraraśmayaḥ ,
paryagacchañśanaiḥ sarvā diśaḥ khaṁ ca kṣitiṁ tathā.
45. utsārayantaḥ prabhayā tamaḥ te candraraśmayaḥ
paryagacchan śanaiḥ sarvāḥ diśaḥ khaṃ ca kṣitim tathā
45. te candraraśmayaḥ प्रभया tamaḥ utsārayantaḥ śanaiḥ

45. Those moonbeams, dispelling the darkness with their brilliance, gradually spread across all directions, the sky, and the earth.
ततो मुहूर्ताद्भुवनं ज्योतिर्भूतमिवाभवत् ।
अप्रख्यमप्रकाशं च जगामाशु तमस्तथा ॥४६॥
46. tato muhūrtādbhuvanaṁ jyotirbhūtamivābhavat ,
aprakhyamaprakāśaṁ ca jagāmāśu tamastathā.
46. tataḥ muhūrtāt bhuvanaṃ jyotirbhūtam iva abhavat
aprakhyam aprakāśaṃ ca jagāma āśu tamaḥ tathā
46. tataḥ muhūrtāt bhuvanaṃ jyotirbhūtam iva abhavat
tathā aprakhyam aprakāśaṃ tamaḥ ca āśu jagāma
46. Then, in a moment, the world became as if imbued with light. And similarly, the indistinct and unilluminated darkness quickly vanished.
प्रतिप्रकाशिते लोके दिवाभूते निशाकरे ।
विचेरुर्न विचेरुश्च राजन्नक्तंचरास्ततः ॥४७॥
47. pratiprakāśite loke divābhūte niśākare ,
vicerurna viceruśca rājannaktaṁcarāstataḥ.

47. rājan,

47. O King, when the world was completely illuminated, and the moon, the maker of night, had become like day, the nocturnal beings consequently did not wander at all.
बोध्यमानं तु तत्सैन्यं राजंश्चन्द्रस्य रश्मिभिः ।
बुबुधे शतपत्राणां वनं महदिवाम्भसि ॥४८॥
48. bodhyamānaṁ tu tatsainyaṁ rājaṁścandrasya raśmibhiḥ ,
bubudhe śatapatrāṇāṁ vanaṁ mahadivāmbhasi.
48. bodhyamānaṃ tu tat sainyaṃ rājan candrasya raśmibhiḥ
bubudhe śatapatrāṇāṃ vanaṃ mahat iva ambhasi
48. rājan tu tat sainyaṃ candrasya raśmibhiḥ bodhyamānaṃ
ambhasi mahat śatapatrāṇāṃ vanaṃ iva bubudhe
48. But, O King, that army, being awakened by the moon's rays, became aware, just as a great mass of lotuses in water awakens (opens).
यथा चन्द्रोदयोद्धूतः क्षुभितः सागरो भवेत् ।
तथा चन्द्रोदयोद्धूतः स बभूव बलार्णवः ॥४९॥
49. yathā candrodayoddhūtaḥ kṣubhitaḥ sāgaro bhavet ,
tathā candrodayoddhūtaḥ sa babhūva balārṇavaḥ.
49. yathā candrodayoddhūtaḥ kṣubhitaḥ sāgaraḥ bhavet
tathā candrodayoddhūtaḥ saḥ babhūva balārṇavaḥ
49. yathā sāgaraḥ candrodayoddhūtaḥ kṣubhitaḥ bhavet
tathā saḥ balārṇavaḥ candrodayoddhūtaḥ babhūva
49. Just as an ocean becomes agitated and turbulent, stirred by the rising moon, so too did that ocean-like army become agitated by the moonrise.
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं पुनरेव विशां पते ।
लोके लोकविनाशाय परं लोकमभीप्सताम् ॥५०॥
50. tataḥ pravavṛte yuddhaṁ punareva viśāṁ pate ,
loke lokavināśāya paraṁ lokamabhīpsatām.

50. O lord of the people, the battle then commenced again, destined for the destruction of the world, by those who longed for the higher world.
