युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
राजन्किं करवामस्ते प्रशाध्यस्मांस्त्वमीश्वरः ।
नित्यं हि स्थातुमिच्छामस्तव भारत शासने ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
rājankiṁ karavāmaste praśādhyasmāṁstvamīśvaraḥ ,
nityaṁ hi sthātumicchāmastava bhārata śāsane.
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca rājan kim karavāmaḥ te praśādhi asmān
tvam īśvaraḥ nityam hi sthātum icchāmaḥ tava bhārata śāsane
1. Yudhiṣṭhira said, "O King, what service can we render to you? Please govern us, for you are our lord. Indeed, O Bhārata, we always desire to remain under your guidance."
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
अजातशत्रो भद्रं ते अरिष्टं स्वस्ति गच्छत ।
अनुज्ञाताः सहधनाः स्वराज्यमनुशासत ॥२॥
2. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
ajātaśatro bhadraṁ te ariṣṭaṁ svasti gacchata ,
anujñātāḥ sahadhanāḥ svarājyamanuśāsata.
2. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ajātaśatro bhadram te ariṣṭam svasti
gacchata anujñātāḥ sahadhanāḥ svarājyam anuśāsata
2. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said, "O Ajātaśatru, may you have well-being. Depart safely and without harm. Having been permitted, along with your wealth, go and rule your own kingdom."
इदं त्वेवावबोद्धव्यं वृद्धस्य मम शासनम् ।
धिया निगदितं कृत्स्नं पथ्यं निःश्रेयसं परम् ॥३॥
3. idaṁ tvevāvaboddhavyaṁ vṛddhasya mama śāsanam ,
dhiyā nigaditaṁ kṛtsnaṁ pathyaṁ niḥśreyasaṁ param.
3. idam tu eva avaboddhavyam vṛddhasya mama śāsanam
dhiyā nigaditam kṛtsnam pathyam niḥśreyasam param
3. Indeed, this instruction from me, an old man, must be fully understood. It has been entirely imparted with wisdom, and it is wholesome, leading to the ultimate well-being (niḥśreyasa).
वेत्थ त्वं तात धर्माणां गतिं सूक्ष्मां युधिष्ठिर ।
विनीतोऽसि महाप्राज्ञ वृद्धानां पर्युपासिता ॥४॥
4. vettha tvaṁ tāta dharmāṇāṁ gatiṁ sūkṣmāṁ yudhiṣṭhira ,
vinīto'si mahāprājña vṛddhānāṁ paryupāsitā.
4. vettha tvam tāta dharmāṇām gatim sūkṣmām yudhiṣṭhira
vinītaḥ asi mahāprājña vṛddhānām paryupāsitā
4. O Yudhiṣṭhira, my dear son, you understand the subtle path of natural law (dharma). You are modest, O greatly wise one, and you have diligently attended upon the elders.
यतो बुद्धिस्ततः शान्तिः प्रशमं गच्छ भारत ।
नादारौ क्रमते शस्त्रं दारौ शस्त्रं निपात्यते ॥५॥
5. yato buddhistataḥ śāntiḥ praśamaṁ gaccha bhārata ,
nādārau kramate śastraṁ dārau śastraṁ nipātyate.
5. yatas buddhiḥ tataḥ śāntiḥ praśamam gaccha bhārata
na adārau kramate śastram dārau śastram nipātyate
5. Where there is wisdom (buddhi), there is peace. Therefore, attain tranquility, O Bhārata. A weapon is not employed against that which is not a proper target; rather, a weapon is struck down upon a proper target.
न वैराण्यभिजानन्ति गुणान्पश्यन्ति नागुणान् ।
विरोधं नाधिगच्छन्ति ये त उत्तमपूरुषाः ॥६॥
6. na vairāṇyabhijānanti guṇānpaśyanti nāguṇān ,
virodhaṁ nādhigacchanti ye ta uttamapūruṣāḥ.
6. na vairāṇi abhijānanti guṇān paśyanti na aguṇān
virodham na adhigacchanti ye te uttamapuruṣāḥ
6. The excellent persons (puruṣa) do not acknowledge enmities. They perceive qualities and not faults, and they do not recognize conflict. Such are the excellent persons (puruṣa).
संवादे परुषाण्याहुर्युधिष्ठिर नराधमाः ।
प्रत्याहुर्मध्यमास्त्वेतानुक्ताः परुषमुत्तरम् ॥७॥
7. saṁvāde paruṣāṇyāhuryudhiṣṭhira narādhamāḥ ,
pratyāhurmadhyamāstvetānuktāḥ paruṣamuttaram.
7. saṃvāde paruṣāṇi āhuḥ yudhiṣṭhira narādhamāḥ
prati āhuḥ madhyamāḥ tu etān uktāḥ paruṣam uttaram
7. O Yudhiṣṭhira, the worst of men (narādhama) speak harsh words in conversation. However, the mediocre ones, when addressed harshly, retort with harsh replies to them.
नैवोक्ता नैव चानुक्ता अहिताः परुषा गिरः ।
प्रतिजल्पन्ति वै धीराः सदा उत्तमपूरुषाः ॥८॥
8. naivoktā naiva cānuktā ahitāḥ paruṣā giraḥ ,
pratijalpanti vai dhīrāḥ sadā uttamapūruṣāḥ.
8. na eva uktāḥ na eva ca anuktāḥ ahitāḥ paruṣāḥ
giraḥ pratijalpanti vai dhīrāḥ sadā uttamapuruṣāḥ
8. Harmful, harsh words are neither uttered nor kept unsaid by the wise (dhīra). Indeed, excellent persons (puruṣa) always respond.
स्मरन्ति सुकृतान्येव न वैराणि कृतान्यपि ।
सन्तः प्रतिविजानन्तो लब्ध्वा प्रत्ययमात्मनः ॥९॥
9. smaranti sukṛtānyeva na vairāṇi kṛtānyapi ,
santaḥ prativijānanto labdhvā pratyayamātmanaḥ.
9. smaranti sukṛtāni eva na vairāṇi kṛtāni api
santaḥ prativijānantaḥ labdhvā pratyayam ātmanaḥ
9. Good people (santaḥ), having obtained a clear understanding of their inner self (ātman), remember only the good deeds that were performed, and not even the acts of hostility that have been committed.
तथाचरितमार्येण त्वयास्मिन्सत्समागमे ।
दुर्योधनस्य पारुष्यं तत्तात हृदि मा कृथाः ॥१०॥
10. tathācaritamāryeṇa tvayāsminsatsamāgame ,
duryodhanasya pāruṣyaṁ tattāta hṛdi mā kṛthāḥ.
10. tathā ācaritam āryeṇa tvayā asmin satsamāgame
duryodhanasya pāruṣyam tat tāta hṛdi mā kṛthāḥ
10. My dear son (tāta), you have behaved thus nobly in this assembly of virtuous people (satsamāgama). Therefore, do not harbor Duryodhana's harshness in your heart.
मातरं चैव गान्धारीं मां च त्वद्गुणकाङ्क्षिणम् ।
उपस्थितं वृद्धमन्धं पितरं पश्य भारत ॥११॥
11. mātaraṁ caiva gāndhārīṁ māṁ ca tvadguṇakāṅkṣiṇam ,
upasthitaṁ vṛddhamandhaṁ pitaraṁ paśya bhārata.
11. mātaram ca eva gāndhārīm mām ca tvadguṇakāṅkṣiṇam
upasthitam vṛddham andham pitaram paśya bhārata
11. O Bhārata, behold your mother Gandhari, and me, your aged, blind father, who stands here desiring your virtues.
प्रेक्षापूर्वं मया द्यूतमिदमासीदुपेक्षितम् ।
मित्राणि द्रष्टुकामेन पुत्राणां च बलाबलम् ॥१२॥
12. prekṣāpūrvaṁ mayā dyūtamidamāsīdupekṣitam ,
mitrāṇi draṣṭukāmena putrāṇāṁ ca balābalam.
12. prekṣāpūrvam mayā dyūtam idam āsīt upekṣitam
mitrāṇi draṣṭukāmena putrāṇām ca balābalam
12. This game of dice was intentionally permitted by me, as I desired to discern the strengths and weaknesses of both my friends and my sons.
अशोच्याः कुरवो राजन्येषां त्वमनुशासिता ।
मन्त्री च विदुरो धीमान्सर्वशास्त्रविशारदः ॥१३॥
13. aśocyāḥ kuravo rājanyeṣāṁ tvamanuśāsitā ,
mantrī ca viduro dhīmānsarvaśāstraviśāradaḥ.
13. aśocyāḥ kuravaḥ rājan yeṣām tvam anuśāsitā
mantrī ca viduraḥ dhīmān sarvaśāstra-viśāradaḥ
13. O King, the Kurus are not to be grieved for, as you are their ruler and wise Vidura, an expert in all scriptures, is their minister.
त्वयि धर्मोऽर्जुने वीर्यं भीमसेने पराक्रमः ।
श्रद्धा च गुरुशुश्रूषा यमयोः पुरुषाग्र्ययोः ॥१४॥
14. tvayi dharmo'rjune vīryaṁ bhīmasene parākramaḥ ,
śraddhā ca guruśuśrūṣā yamayoḥ puruṣāgryayoḥ.
14. tvayi dharmaḥ arjune vīryam bhīmasene parākramaḥ
śraddhā ca guruśuśrūṣā yamayoḥ puruṣāgryayoḥ
14. In you (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) resides adherence to natural law (dharma), in Arjuna, valor; in Bhimasena, prowess. And in the foremost among men, the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva), there is faith (śraddhā) and service to their preceptor (guruśuśrūṣā).
अजातशत्रो भद्रं ते खाण्डवप्रस्थमाविश ।
भ्रातृभिस्तेऽस्तु सौभ्रात्रं धर्मे ते धीयतां मनः ॥१५॥
15. ajātaśatro bhadraṁ te khāṇḍavaprasthamāviśa ,
bhrātṛbhiste'stu saubhrātraṁ dharme te dhīyatāṁ manaḥ.
15. ajātaśatro bhadram te khāṇḍavaprastham āviśa bhrātṛbhiḥ
te astu saubhrātram dharme te dhīyatām manaḥ
15. O Ajātaśatru (Yudhiṣṭhira), may good fortune be upon you. Enter Khaṇḍavaprastha. Let there be good brotherhood (saubhrātram) with your brothers, and let your mind be placed in natural law (dharma).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्तो भरतश्रेष्ठो धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
कृत्वार्यसमयं सर्वं प्रतस्थे भ्रातृभिः सह ॥१६॥
16. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityukto bharataśreṣṭho dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
kṛtvāryasamayaṁ sarvaṁ pratasthe bhrātṛbhiḥ saha.
16. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca iti uktaḥ
bharataśreṣṭhaḥ dharmarājaḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ kṛtvā āryasamayam
sarvam pratasthe bhrātṛbhiḥ saha
16. Vaiśampāyana said: Thus addressed, Yudhiṣṭhira, the foremost of the Bhāratas and the King of natural law (dharma), having fulfilled the entire agreement of the noble ones, set out with his brothers.
ते रथान्मेघसंकाशानास्थाय सह कृष्णया ।
प्रययुर्हृष्टमनस इन्द्रप्रस्थं पुरोत्तमम् ॥१७॥
17. te rathānmeghasaṁkāśānāsthāya saha kṛṣṇayā ,
prayayurhṛṣṭamanasa indraprasthaṁ purottamam.
17. te rathān meghasaṃkāśān āsthāya saha kṛṣṇayā
prayayuḥ hṛṣṭamanasaḥ indraprastham purottamam
17. With cheerful hearts, they mounted chariots that resembled clouds and, accompanied by Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), set forth for Indraprastha, the finest of cities.
