वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इक्ष्वाकुवंशप्रभवो राजासीत्पृथिवीपतिः ।
महाभिष इति ख्यातः सत्यवाक्सत्यविक्रमः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ikṣvākuvaṁśaprabhavo rājāsītpṛthivīpatiḥ ,
mahābhiṣa iti khyātaḥ satyavāksatyavikramaḥ.
1. vaiśampāyana uvāca ikṣvākuvaṃśaprabhavaḥ rājā āsīt
pṛthivīpatiḥ mahābhiṣa iti khyātaḥ satyavāk satyavikramaḥ
1. Vaiśampāyana said: There was a king, the lord of the earth, born in the Ikshvaku lineage, known as Mahābhiṣa. He was truthful in speech and truly valorous.
सोऽश्वमेधसहस्रेण वाजपेयशतेन च ।
तोषयामास देवेन्द्रं स्वर्गं लेभे ततः प्रभुः ॥२॥
2. so'śvamedhasahasreṇa vājapeyaśatena ca ,
toṣayāmāsa devendraṁ svargaṁ lebhe tataḥ prabhuḥ.
2. saḥ aśvamedhasahasreṇa vājapeyaśatena ca
toṣayāmāsa devendram svargam lebhe tataḥ prabhuḥ
2. He (King Mahābhiṣa) pleased the lord of the gods (Indra) with a thousand ashvamedha yagyas and a hundred vājapeya yagyas. Thereupon, that lord attained heaven.
ततः कदाचिद्ब्रह्माणमुपासां चक्रिरे सुराः ।
तत्र राजर्षयो आसन्स च राजा महाभिषः ॥३॥
3. tataḥ kadācidbrahmāṇamupāsāṁ cakrire surāḥ ,
tatra rājarṣayo āsansa ca rājā mahābhiṣaḥ.
3. tataḥ kadācit brahmāṇam upāsām cakrire surāḥ
tatra rājarṣayaḥ āsan saḥ ca rājā mahābhiṣaḥ
3. Then, one day, the gods worshipped Brahmā. Royal sages were present there, and King Mahābhiṣa was also among them.
अथ गङ्गा सरिच्छ्रेष्ठा समुपायात्पितामहम् ।
तस्या वासः समुद्धूतं मारुतेन शशिप्रभम् ॥४॥
4. atha gaṅgā saricchreṣṭhā samupāyātpitāmaham ,
tasyā vāsaḥ samuddhūtaṁ mārutena śaśiprabham.
4. atha gaṅgā saricchreṣṭhā samupāyāt pitāmaham
tasyāḥ vāsaḥ samuddhūtam mārutena śaśiprabham
4. Then, Gaṅgā, the foremost of rivers, approached Brahmā. Her garment, radiant as the moon, was lifted up by the wind.
ततोऽभवन्सुरगणाः सहसावाङ्मुखास्तदा ।
महाभिषस्तु राजर्षिरशङ्को दृष्टवान्नदीम् ॥५॥
5. tato'bhavansuragaṇāḥ sahasāvāṅmukhāstadā ,
mahābhiṣastu rājarṣiraśaṅko dṛṣṭavānnadīm.
5. tataḥ abhavan suragaṇāḥ sahasā avāṅmukhāḥ tadā
mahābhiṣaḥ tu rājarṣiḥ aśaṅkaḥ dṛṣṭavān nadīm
5. Then, the hosts of gods suddenly became downcast. But King Mahābhiṣa, the royal sage, fearless, gazed upon the river.
अपध्यातो भगवता ब्रह्मणा स महाभिषः ।
उक्तश्च जातो मर्त्येषु पुनर्लोकानवाप्स्यसि ॥६॥
6. apadhyāto bhagavatā brahmaṇā sa mahābhiṣaḥ ,
uktaśca jāto martyeṣu punarlokānavāpsyasi.
6. apadhyātaḥ bhagavatā brahmaṇā sa mahābhiṣaḥ
uktaḥ ca jātaḥ martyeṣu punar lokān avāpsyasi
6. He, Mahābhiṣa, having been cursed by the divine Brahma, was told, 'You will be born among mortals, and then you will again attain the [higher] worlds.'
स चिन्तयित्वा नृपतिर्नृपान्सर्वांस्तपोधनान् ।
प्रतीपं रोचयामास पितरं भूरिवर्चसम् ॥७॥
7. sa cintayitvā nṛpatirnṛpānsarvāṁstapodhanān ,
pratīpaṁ rocayāmāsa pitaraṁ bhūrivarcasam.
7. sa cintayitvā nṛpatiḥ nṛpān sarvān tapodhanān
pratīpam rocayāmāsa pitaram bhūrivarcasam
7. Having considered all those kings and sages whose wealth was tapas, that king chose his glorious father, Pratīpa.
महाभिषं तु तं दृष्ट्वा नदी धैर्याच्च्युतं नृपम् ।
तमेव मनसाध्यायमुपावर्तत्सरिद्वरा ॥८॥
8. mahābhiṣaṁ tu taṁ dṛṣṭvā nadī dhairyāccyutaṁ nṛpam ,
tameva manasādhyāyamupāvartatsaridvarā.
8. mahābhiṣam tu tam dṛṣṭvā nadī dhairyāt cyutam
nṛpam tam eva manasā adhyāyam upāvartat saridvarā
8. But having seen that King Mahābhiṣa, who had fallen from his steadfastness, the best of rivers (Ganga), with mental contemplation, approached him.
सा तु विध्वस्तवपुषः कश्मलाभिहतौजसः ।
ददर्श पथि गच्छन्ती वसून्देवान्दिवौकसः ॥९॥
9. sā tu vidhvastavapuṣaḥ kaśmalābhihataujasaḥ ,
dadarśa pathi gacchantī vasūndevāndivaukasaḥ.
9. sā tu vidhvastavapuṣaḥ kaśmalābhihataujasaḥ
dadarśa pathi gacchantī vasūn devān divaukasaḥ
9. But as she was going on the path, she saw the Vasus - gods and dwellers of heaven - whose forms were wasted and whose vital energy was overcome by impurity.
तथारूपांश्च तान्दृष्ट्वा पप्रच्छ सरितां वरा ।
किमिदं नष्टरूपाः स्थ कच्चित्क्षेमं दिवौकसाम् ॥१०॥
10. tathārūpāṁśca tāndṛṣṭvā papraccha saritāṁ varā ,
kimidaṁ naṣṭarūpāḥ stha kaccitkṣemaṁ divaukasām.
10. tathārūpān ca tān dṛṣṭvā papraccha saritām varā
kim idam naṣṭarūpāḥ stha kaccit kṣemam divaukasām
10. And having seen them in such a state, the best of rivers (Ganga) asked, 'What is this? Why are your forms wasted? Is all well with the dwellers of heaven?'
तामूचुर्वसवो देवाः शप्ताः स्मो वै महानदि ।
अल्पेऽपराधे संरम्भाद्वसिष्ठेन महात्मना ॥११॥
11. tāmūcurvasavo devāḥ śaptāḥ smo vai mahānadi ,
alpe'parādhe saṁrambhādvasiṣṭhena mahātmanā.
11. tām ūcuḥ vasavaḥ devāḥ śaptāḥ smaḥ vai mahānadi
alpe aparādhe saṃrambhāt vasiṣṭhena mahātmanā
11. The Vasu gods said to her, "O great river, we have indeed been cursed by the great-souled Vasishtha out of fury for a minor offense."
विमूढा हि वयं सर्वे प्रच्छन्नमृषिसत्तमम् ।
संध्यां वसिष्ठमासीनं तमत्यभिसृताः पुरा ॥१२॥
12. vimūḍhā hi vayaṁ sarve pracchannamṛṣisattamam ,
saṁdhyāṁ vasiṣṭhamāsīnaṁ tamatyabhisṛtāḥ purā.
12. vimūḍhāḥ hi vayam sarve pracchannam ṛṣisattamam
saṃdhyām vasiṣṭham āsīnam tam atyabhisṛtāḥ purā
12. Indeed, we were all bewildered, and formerly, we rushed past him, the best of sages, Vasishtha, who was seated concealed while performing his twilight devotions.
तेन कोपाद्वयं शप्ता योनौ संभवतेति ह ।
न शक्यमन्यथा कर्तुं यदुक्तं ब्रह्मवादिना ॥१३॥
13. tena kopādvayaṁ śaptā yonau saṁbhavateti ha ,
na śakyamanyathā kartuṁ yaduktaṁ brahmavādinā.
13. tena kopāt vayam śaptāḥ yonau saṃbhavata iti ha
na śakyam anyathā kartum yat uktam brahmavādinā
13. By him, out of anger, we were cursed, "You shall be born in a womb!" Indeed, what has been spoken by the knower of Brahman cannot be altered.
त्वं तस्मान्मानुषी भूत्वा सूष्व पुत्रान्वसून्भुवि ।
न मानुषीणां जठरं प्रविशेमाशुभं वयम् ॥१४॥
14. tvaṁ tasmānmānuṣī bhūtvā sūṣva putrānvasūnbhuvi ,
na mānuṣīṇāṁ jaṭharaṁ praviśemāśubhaṁ vayam.
14. tvam tasmāt mānuṣī bhūtvā sūṣva putrān vasūn bhuvi
na mānuṣīṇām jaṭharam praviśema aśubham vayam
14. Therefore, becoming a human woman, you bear sons – the Vasus – on Earth. We cannot enter the inauspicious wombs of human women.
इत्युक्ता तान्वसून्गङ्गा तथेत्युक्त्वाब्रवीदिदम् ।
मर्त्येषु पुरुषश्रेष्ठः को वः कर्ता भविष्यति ॥१५॥
15. ityuktā tānvasūngaṅgā tathetyuktvābravīdidam ,
martyeṣu puruṣaśreṣṭhaḥ ko vaḥ kartā bhaviṣyati.
15. iti uktā tān vasūn gaṅgā tathā iti uktvā abravīt idam
martyeṣu puruṣaśreṣṭhaḥ kaḥ vaḥ kartā bhaviṣyati
15. Thus addressed by them, Ganga, having said "So be it" to those Vasus, spoke this: "Among mortals, who will be your father, the best of men?"
वसव ऊचुः ।
प्रतीपस्य सुतो राजा शंतनुर्नाम धार्मिकः ।
भविता मानुषे लोके स नः कर्ता भविष्यति ॥१६॥
16. vasava ūcuḥ ,
pratīpasya suto rājā śaṁtanurnāma dhārmikaḥ ,
bhavitā mānuṣe loke sa naḥ kartā bhaviṣyati.
16. vasavaḥ ūcuḥ pratīpasya sutaḥ rājā śaṃtanuḥ nāma
dhārmikaḥ bhavitā mānuṣe loke saḥ naḥ kartā bhaviṣyati
16. The Vasus said: 'King Śaṃtanu, the righteous son of Pratipa, will be born in the human world, and he will be our helper.'
गङ्गोवाच ।
ममाप्येवं मतं देवा यथावदत मानघाः ।
प्रियं तस्य करिष्यामि युष्माकं चैतदीप्सितम् ॥१७॥
17. gaṅgovāca ,
mamāpyevaṁ mataṁ devā yathāvadata mānaghāḥ ,
priyaṁ tasya kariṣyāmi yuṣmākaṁ caitadīpsitam.
17. gaṅgā uvāca mama api evam matam devāḥ yathā avadata
mānaghāḥ priyam tasya kariṣyāmi yuṣmākam ca etat īpsitam
17. Gaṅgā said: 'My view, O faultless gods, is also just as you have spoken. I will do what is dear to him, and this is also your desire.'
वसव ऊचुः ।
जातान्कुमारान्स्वानप्सु प्रक्षेप्तुं वै त्वमर्हसि ।
यथा नचिरकालं नो निष्कृतिः स्यात्त्रिलोकगे ॥१८॥
18. vasava ūcuḥ ,
jātānkumārānsvānapsu prakṣeptuṁ vai tvamarhasi ,
yathā nacirakālaṁ no niṣkṛtiḥ syāttrilokage.
18. vasavaḥ ūcuḥ jātān kumārān svān apsu prakṣeptum vai tvam
arhasi yathā na cirakālam naḥ niṣkṛtiḥ syāt trilokage
18. The Vasus said: 'Indeed, you must throw your born sons into the water, so that our liberation, O dweller of the three worlds, may come about soon.'
गङ्गोवाच ।
एवमेतत्करिष्यामि पुत्रस्तस्य विधीयताम् ।
नास्य मोघः संगमः स्यात्पुत्रहेतोर्मया सह ॥१९॥
19. gaṅgovāca ,
evametatkariṣyāmi putrastasya vidhīyatām ,
nāsya moghaḥ saṁgamaḥ syātputrahetormayā saha.
19. gaṅgā uvāca evam etat kariṣyāmi putraḥ tasya vidhīyatām
na asya moghaḥ saṃgamaḥ syāt putrahetoḥ mayā saha
19. Gaṅgā said: 'I will indeed do this. Let a son be granted to him, for his union with me should not be fruitless concerning a son.'
वसव ऊचुः ।
तुरीयार्धं प्रदास्यामो वीर्यस्यैकैकशो वयम् ।
तेन वीर्येण पुत्रस्ते भविता तस्य चेप्सितः ॥२०॥
20. vasava ūcuḥ ,
turīyārdhaṁ pradāsyāmo vīryasyaikaikaśo vayam ,
tena vīryeṇa putraste bhavitā tasya cepsitaḥ.
20. vasavaḥ ūcuḥ turīyārdham pradāsyāmaḥ vīryasya ekaikaśaḥ
vayam tena vīryeṇa putraḥ te bhavitā tasya ca īpsitaḥ
20. The Vasus said: 'We will each contribute a quarter of our virya (potency). With that combined potency, your son will be born, and he will be desired by him.'
न संपत्स्यति मर्त्येषु पुनस्तस्य तु संततिः ।
तस्मादपुत्रः पुत्रस्ते भविष्यति स वीर्यवान् ॥२१॥
21. na saṁpatsyati martyeṣu punastasya tu saṁtatiḥ ,
tasmādaputraḥ putraste bhaviṣyati sa vīryavān.
21. na saṃpatsyati martyeṣu punaḥ tasya tu saṃtatiḥ
tasmāt aputraḥ putraḥ te bhaviṣyati saḥ vīryavān
21. His lineage will certainly not thrive again among mortals. Therefore, that valorous one will be your son, but he will be without sons himself.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवं ते समयं कृत्वा गङ्गया वसवः सह ।
जग्मुः प्रहृष्टमनसो यथासंकल्पमञ्जसा ॥२२॥
22. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evaṁ te samayaṁ kṛtvā gaṅgayā vasavaḥ saha ,
jagmuḥ prahṛṣṭamanaso yathāsaṁkalpamañjasā.
22. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca evam te samayam kṛtvā gaṅgayā vasavaḥ
saha jagmuḥ prahr̥ṣṭamanasaḥ yathāsaṃkalpam añjasā
22. Vaiśampāyana said: Having thus made an agreement with Gaṅgā, the Vasus, with joyful minds, departed swiftly according to their resolve.
