जनमेजय उवाच ।
पितामहस्य मे यज्ञे धर्मपुत्रस्य धीमतः ।
यदाश्चर्यमभूत्किंचित्तद्भवान्वक्तुमर्हति ॥१॥
1. janamejaya uvāca ,
pitāmahasya me yajñe dharmaputrasya dhīmataḥ ,

1. Janamejaya said: 'You (your honor) should recount whatever marvel occurred during the [yajña] (Vedic ritual) of my wise grandfather, the son of [dharma].'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
श्रूयतां राजशार्दूल महदाश्चर्यमुत्तमम् ।
अश्वमेधे महायज्ञे निवृत्ते यदभूद्विभो ॥२॥
2. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śrūyatāṁ rājaśārdūla mahadāścaryamuttamam ,
aśvamedhe mahāyajñe nivṛtte yadabhūdvibho.
2. Vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca śrūyatām rājaśārdūla mahat āścaryam
uttamam aśvamedhe mahāyajñe nivṛtte yat abhūt vibho

2. Vaiśampāyana said: "O tiger among kings, O lord, listen to the great and most excellent wonder that occurred upon the completion of the great horse Vedic ritual (aśvamedha yajña)."
तर्पितेषु द्विजाग्र्येषु ज्ञातिसंबन्धिबन्धुषु ।
दीनान्धकृपणे चापि तदा भरतसत्तम ॥३॥
3. tarpiteṣu dvijāgryeṣu jñātisaṁbandhibandhuṣu ,
dīnāndhakṛpaṇe cāpi tadā bharatasattama.

ca api tadā bharatasattama

3. O best among the Bhāratas (Bharatasattama), at that time, when the foremost twice-born priests, relatives, kinsmen, and friends had been satisfied, and even the poor, blind, and helpless had been attended to.
घुष्यमाणे महादाने दिक्षु सर्वासु भारत ।
पतत्सु पुष्पवर्षेषु धर्मराजस्य मूर्धनि ॥४॥
4. ghuṣyamāṇe mahādāne dikṣu sarvāsu bhārata ,
patatsu puṣpavarṣeṣu dharmarājasya mūrdhani.

4. O Bhārata, at that time, as a great gift (dāna) was being proclaimed in all directions, and showers of flowers were falling upon the head of the King of natural law (dharma-rāja), Yudhiṣṭhira.
बिलान्निष्क्रम्य नकुलो रुक्मपार्श्वस्तदानघ ।
वज्राशनिसमं नादममुञ्चत विशां पते ॥५॥
5. bilānniṣkramya nakulo rukmapārśvastadānagha ,
vajrāśanisamaṁ nādamamuñcata viśāṁ pate.
5. bilāt niṣkramya nakulaḥ rukmapārśvaḥ tadā
anagha vajrāśanisamam nādam amuñcata viśām pate
5. anagha viśām pate tadā rukmapārśvaḥ nakulaḥ
bilāt niṣkramya vajrāśanisamam nādam amuñcata
5. O sinless one (anagha), O lord of the people (viśāṃ pate), then a mongoose with golden sides emerged from its hole and uttered a roar like a thunderbolt.
सकृदुत्सृज्य तं नादं त्रासयानो मृगद्विजान् ।
मानुषं वचनं प्राह धृष्टो बिलशयो महान् ॥६॥
6. sakṛdutsṛjya taṁ nādaṁ trāsayāno mṛgadvijān ,
mānuṣaṁ vacanaṁ prāha dhṛṣṭo bilaśayo mahān.
6. sakṛt utsṛjya tam nādam trāsayānaḥ mṛgadvijān
mānuṣam vacanam prāha dhṛṣṭaḥ bilaśayaḥ mahān
6. mahān dhṛṣṭaḥ bilaśayaḥ sakṛt tam nādam utsṛjya
mṛgadvijān trāsayānaḥ mānuṣam vacanam prāha
6. Once, having let out that roar and frightened the deer and birds, the great and audacious cave-dweller spoke human words.
सक्तुप्रस्थेन वो नायं यज्ञस्तुल्यो नराधिपाः ।
उञ्छवृत्तेर्वदान्यस्य कुरुक्षेत्रनिवासिनः ॥७॥
7. saktuprasthena vo nāyaṁ yajñastulyo narādhipāḥ ,
uñchavṛttervadānyasya kurukṣetranivāsinaḥ.
7. saktuprasthena vaḥ na ayam yajñaḥ tulyaḥ narādhipāḥ
uñchavṛtteḥ vadānyasya kurukṣetranivāsinaḥ
7. narādhipāḥ vaḥ ayam yajñaḥ uñchavṛtteḥ vadānyasya
kurukṣetranivāsinaḥ saktuprasthena tulyaḥ na
7. O kings, this "Vedic ritual" (yajña) of yours is not comparable to that of the generous gleaner who resides in Kurukṣetra, not even by a "prastha" of barley meal.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा नकुलस्य विशां पते ।
विस्मयं परमं जग्मुः सर्वे ते ब्राह्मणर्षभाः ॥८॥
8. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā nakulasya viśāṁ pate ,
vismayaṁ paramaṁ jagmuḥ sarve te brāhmaṇarṣabhāḥ.
8. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā nakulasya viśām pate
vismayam paramam jagmuḥ sarve te brāhmaṇarṣabhāḥ
8. viśām pate sarve te brāhmaṇarṣabhāḥ nakulasya
tasya tat vacanam śrutvā paramam vismayam jagmuḥ
8. O lord of the people, upon hearing those words of the mongoose, all those foremost among the Brahmins were greatly astonished.
ततः समेत्य नकुलं पर्यपृच्छन्त ते द्विजाः ।
कुतस्त्वं समनुप्राप्तो यज्ञं साधुसमागमम् ॥९॥
9. tataḥ sametya nakulaṁ paryapṛcchanta te dvijāḥ ,
kutastvaṁ samanuprāpto yajñaṁ sādhusamāgamam.
9. tataḥ sametya nakulam paryapṛcchanta te dvijāḥ
kutaḥ tvam samanuprāptaḥ yajñam sādhusamāgamam
9. tataḥ te dvijāḥ nakulam sametya paryapṛcchanta
tvam kutaḥ sādhusamāgamam yajñam samanuprāptaḥ
9. Thereupon, those Brahmins approached the mongoose and asked, 'From where have you arrived at this "Vedic ritual" (yajña), which is an assembly of virtuous people?'
किं बलं परमं तुभ्यं किं श्रुतं किं परायणम् ।
कथं भवन्तं विद्याम यो नो यज्ञं विगर्हसे ॥१०॥
10. kiṁ balaṁ paramaṁ tubhyaṁ kiṁ śrutaṁ kiṁ parāyaṇam ,
kathaṁ bhavantaṁ vidyāma yo no yajñaṁ vigarhase.
10. kim balam paramam tubhyam kim śrutam kim parāyaṇam
katham bhavantam vidyāma yaḥ naḥ yajñam vigarhase
10. yaḥ naḥ yajñam vigarhase tubhyam paramam balam kim
śrutam kim parāyaṇam kim bhavantam katham vidyāma
10. What is your supreme strength, what is your scriptural knowledge, and what is your ultimate refuge? How can we know you, who criticize our Vedic ritual (yajña)?
अविलुप्यागमं कृत्स्नं विधिज्ञैर्याजकैः कृतम् ।
यथागमं यथान्यायं कर्तव्यं च यथाकृतम् ॥११॥
11. avilupyāgamaṁ kṛtsnaṁ vidhijñairyājakaiḥ kṛtam ,
yathāgamaṁ yathānyāyaṁ kartavyaṁ ca yathākṛtam.
11. avilupya āgamam kṛtsnam vidhijñaiḥ yājakaiḥ kṛtam
yathā āgamam yathā nyāyam kartavyam ca yathā kṛtam
11. kṛtsnam āgamam avilupya vidhijñaiḥ yājakaiḥ kṛtam
yathā āgamam yathā nyāyam ca yathā kṛtam kartavyam
11. Without violating the entire sacred tradition (āgama), (it should be) performed by priests who know the rituals, according to the sacred texts and according to propriety, and it should be done as it has been done.
पूजार्हाः पूजिताश्चात्र विधिवच्छास्त्रचक्षुषा ।
मन्त्रपूतं हुतश्चाग्निर्दत्तं देयममत्सरम् ॥१२॥
12. pūjārhāḥ pūjitāścātra vidhivacchāstracakṣuṣā ,
mantrapūtaṁ hutaścāgnirdattaṁ deyamamatsaram.
12. pūjārhāḥ pūjitāḥ ca atra vidhivat śāstracakṣuṣā
mantrapūtam hutaḥ ca agniḥ dattam deyam amatsaram
12. atra pūjārhāḥ ca vidhivat śāstracakṣuṣā pūjitāḥ
ca agniḥ mantrapūtam hutaḥ deyam dattam amatsaram
12. Here, those worthy of reverence have been duly honored by persons guided by the sacred texts (śāstra). The fire (agni) has been offered purified by mantras, and the proper offering (dāna) was given without jealousy.
तुष्टा द्विजर्षभाश्चात्र दानैर्बहुविधैरपि ।
क्षत्रियाश्च सुयुद्धेन श्राद्धैरपि पितामहाः ॥१३॥
13. tuṣṭā dvijarṣabhāścātra dānairbahuvidhairapi ,
kṣatriyāśca suyuddhena śrāddhairapi pitāmahāḥ.
13. tuṣṭāḥ dvijarṣabhāḥ ca atra dānaiḥ bahuvidhaiḥ api
kṣatriyāḥ ca suyuddhena śrāddhaiḥ api pitāmahāḥ
13. atra dvijarṣabhāḥ ca bahuvidhaiḥ dānaiḥ api tuṣṭāḥ
ca kṣatriyāḥ suyuddhena api pitāmahāḥ śrāddhaiḥ
13. Here, the most excellent of the twice-born were satisfied by various kinds of gifts (dāna); the kṣatriyas by honorable combat; and the ancestors by ancestral offerings (śrāddha).
पालनेन विशस्तुष्टाः कामैस्तुष्टा वरस्त्रियः ।
अनुक्रोशैस्तथा शूद्रा दानशेषैः पृथग्जनाः ॥१४॥
14. pālanena viśastuṣṭāḥ kāmaistuṣṭā varastriyaḥ ,
anukrośaistathā śūdrā dānaśeṣaiḥ pṛthagjanāḥ.
14. pālanena viśaḥ tuṣṭāḥ kāmaiḥ tuṣṭāḥ varastriyaḥ
anukrośaiḥ tathā śūdrāḥ dānaśeṣaiḥ pṛthagjanāḥ
14. viśaḥ pālanena tuṣṭāḥ varastriyaḥ kāmaiḥ tuṣṭāḥ
tathā śūdrāḥ anukrośaiḥ pṛthagjanāḥ dānaśeṣaiḥ
14. The Vaiśyas are content with proper governance, and noble women are pleased by their desires. Similarly, Śūdras are satisfied by compassion, and ordinary people by the remains of charitable offerings.
ज्ञातिसंबन्धिनस्तुष्टाः शौचेन च नृपस्य नः ।
देवा हविर्भिः पुण्यैश्च रक्षणैः शरणागताः ॥१५॥
15. jñātisaṁbandhinastuṣṭāḥ śaucena ca nṛpasya naḥ ,
devā havirbhiḥ puṇyaiśca rakṣaṇaiḥ śaraṇāgatāḥ.
15. jñātisambandhinaḥ tuṣṭāḥ śaucena ca nṛpasya naḥ
devāḥ havirbhiḥ puṇyaiḥ ca rakṣaṇaiḥ śaraṇāgatāḥ
15. naḥ nṛpasya jñātisambandhinaḥ śaucena ca tuṣṭāḥ
devāḥ havirbhiḥ ca puṇyaiḥ śaraṇāgatāḥ rakṣaṇaiḥ
15. Our kinsmen and relatives are pleased by the king's purity. The gods are satisfied by sacred offerings and pious deeds, and those seeking refuge (śaraṇāgatāḥ) are pleased by protection.
यदत्र तथ्यं तद्ब्रूहि सत्यसंध द्विजातिषु ।
यथाश्रुतं यथादृष्टं पृष्टो ब्राह्मणकाम्यया ॥१६॥
16. yadatra tathyaṁ tadbrūhi satyasaṁdha dvijātiṣu ,
yathāśrutaṁ yathādṛṣṭaṁ pṛṣṭo brāhmaṇakāmyayā.
16. yat atra tathyam tat brūhi satyasaṃdha dvijātiṣu
yathāśrutam yathādṛṣṭam pṛṣṭaḥ brāhmaṇakāmyayā
16. satyasaṃdha yat atra tathyam tat dvijātiṣu brūhi
brāhmaṇakāmyayā pṛṣṭaḥ yathāśrutam yathādṛṣṭam
16. O truthful one, explain what is truly the case in this matter concerning the twice-born (dvijāti), just as you have heard and as you have seen, since you have been questioned out of the Brahmins' desire.
श्रद्धेयवाक्यः प्राज्ञस्त्वं दिव्यं रूपं बिभर्षि च ।
समागतश्च विप्रैस्त्वं तत्त्वतो वक्तुमर्हसि ॥१७॥
17. śraddheyavākyaḥ prājñastvaṁ divyaṁ rūpaṁ bibharṣi ca ,
samāgataśca vipraistvaṁ tattvato vaktumarhasi.
17. śraddheyavākyaḥ prājñaḥ tvam divyam rūpam bibharṣi
ca samāgataḥ ca vipraiḥ tvam tattvataḥ vaktum arhasi
17. tvam śraddheyavākyaḥ prājñaḥ ca divyam rūpam bibharṣi
ca tvam vipraiḥ samāgataḥ tattvataḥ vaktum arhasi
17. You are trustworthy and wise, and you possess a divine form. Furthermore, since you have gathered with the Brahmins, you should speak the truth.
इति पृष्टो द्विजैस्तैः स प्रहस्य नकुलोऽब्रवीत् ।
नैषानृता मया वाणी प्रोक्ता दर्पेण वा द्विजाः ॥१८॥
18. iti pṛṣṭo dvijaistaiḥ sa prahasya nakulo'bravīt ,
naiṣānṛtā mayā vāṇī proktā darpeṇa vā dvijāḥ.
18. iti pṛṣṭaḥ dvijaiḥ taiḥ saḥ prahasya nakulaḥ abravīt
na eṣā anṛtā mayā vāṇī proktā darpeṇa vā dvijāḥ
18. nakulaḥ saḥ taiḥ dvijaiḥ pṛṣṭaḥ prahasya abravīt
dvijāḥ mayā proktā eṣā vāṇī na anṛtā vā darpeṇa
18. When asked thus by those Brahmins, the mongoose laughed and said, 'O Brahmins, this statement I made is not false, nor was it spoken out of arrogance.'
यन्मयोक्तमिदं किंचिद्युष्माभिश्चाप्युपश्रुतम् ।
सक्तुप्रस्थेन वो नायं यज्ञस्तुल्यो नराधिपाः ।
उञ्छवृत्तेर्वदान्यस्य कुरुक्षेत्रनिवासिनः ॥१९॥
19. yanmayoktamidaṁ kiṁcidyuṣmābhiścāpyupaśrutam ,
saktuprasthena vo nāyaṁ yajñastulyo narādhipāḥ ,
uñchavṛttervadānyasya kurukṣetranivāsinaḥ.
19. yat mayā uktam idam kiñcit yuṣmābhiḥ
ca api upaśrutam saktuprasthena vaḥ na
ayam yajñaḥ tulyaḥ narādhipāḥ
uñchavṛtteḥ vadānyasya kurukṣetranivāsinaḥ
19. narādhipāḥ mayā yat idam kiñcit uktam
ca yuṣmābhiḥ api upaśrutam vaḥ ayam
yajñaḥ uñchavṛtteḥ vadānyasya
kurukṣetranivāsinaḥ saktuprasthena tulyaḥ na
19. O kings, whatever little I said, and what you have also heard, this (Vedic ritual) of yours is not comparable to the (Vedic ritual) involving a prastha of barley-meal, performed by the generous gleaner who resided in Kurukṣetra.
इत्यवश्यं मयैतद्वो वक्तव्यं द्विजपुंगवाः ।
शृणुताव्यग्रमनसः शंसतो मे द्विजर्षभाः ॥२०॥
20. ityavaśyaṁ mayaitadvo vaktavyaṁ dvijapuṁgavāḥ ,
śṛṇutāvyagramanasaḥ śaṁsato me dvijarṣabhāḥ.
20. iti avaśyam mayā etat vaḥ vaktavyam dvijapuṅgavāḥ
śṛṇuta avyagramanasaḥ śaṃsataḥ me dvijarṣabhāḥ
20. dvijapuṅgavāḥ iti etat avaśyam mayā vaḥ vaktavyam
dvijarṣabhāḥ avyagramanasaḥ me śaṃsataḥ śṛṇuta
20. Therefore, O excellent Brahmins, this must certainly be told by me to you. O best of Brahmins, listen with calm minds as I speak.
अनुभूतं च दृष्टं च यन्मयाद्भुतमुत्तमम् ।
उञ्छवृत्तेर्यथावृत्तं कुरुक्षेत्रनिवासिनः ॥२१॥
21. anubhūtaṁ ca dṛṣṭaṁ ca yanmayādbhutamuttamam ,
uñchavṛtteryathāvṛttaṁ kurukṣetranivāsinaḥ.
21. anubhūtam ca dṛṣṭam ca yat mayā adbhutam uttamam
uñchavṛtteḥ yathāvṛttam kurukṣetranivāsinaḥ
21. mayā yat adbhutam uttamam anubhūtam ca dṛṣṭam
ca uñchavṛtteḥ kurukṣetranivāsinaḥ yathāvṛttam
21. I will tell of what I have personally experienced and witnessed, a most wonderful and excellent event, specifically the full account of the gleaner who lived in Kurukṣetra.
स्वर्गं येन द्विजः प्राप्तः सभार्यः ससुतस्नुषः ।
यथा चार्धं शरीरस्य ममेदं काञ्चनीकृतम् ॥२२॥
22. svargaṁ yena dvijaḥ prāptaḥ sabhāryaḥ sasutasnuṣaḥ ,
yathā cārdhaṁ śarīrasya mamedaṁ kāñcanīkṛtam.
22. svargam yena dvijaḥ prāptaḥ sa-bhāryaḥ sa-suta-snuṣaḥ
yathā ca ardham śarīrasya mama idam kāñcanī-kṛtam
22. yena dvijaḥ sa-bhāryaḥ sa-suta-snuṣaḥ svargam prāptaḥ
yathā ca mama śarīrasya ardham idam kāñcanī-kṛtam
22. Through which the brahmin (dvija) attained heaven (svarga) with his wife, sons, and daughters-in-law, just as this half of my body was turned golden.
