Sañjaya said: Having conquered the Yavanas and Kambojas, Yuyudhāna, that excellent charioteer, then proceeded to Arjuna, going right through the midst of your army.
शरदंष्ट्रो नरव्याघ्रो विचित्रकवचच्छविः ।
मृगान्व्याघ्र इवाजिघ्रंस्तव सैन्यमभीषयत् ॥२॥

That tiger among men (naravyāghraḥ), with sharp fangs and the splendor of variegated armor, terrified your army, just as a tiger stalks and frightens deer.
स रथेन चरन्मार्गान्धनुरभ्रामयद्भृशम् ।
रुक्मपृष्ठं महावेगं रुक्मचन्द्रकसंकुलम् ॥३॥

Moving in his chariot along the battle paths, he vigorously twirled his bow, which had a golden back, was very swift, and was embellished with golden crescent ornaments.
रुक्माङ्गदशिरस्त्राणो रुक्मवर्मसमावृतः ।
रुक्मध्वजवरः शूरो मेरुशृङ्ग इवाबभौ ॥४॥

The hero, adorned with golden armlets and a golden helmet, enveloped in golden armor, and distinguished by an excellent golden banner, shone like a peak of Mount Meru.
सधनुर्मण्डलः संख्ये तेजोभास्वररश्मिवान् ।
शरदीवोदितः सूर्यो नृसूर्यो विरराज ह ॥५॥

In battle, with his bow drawn into a circular arc, and shining with brilliant rays, that sun among men truly blazed forth like the sun risen in autumn.
वृषभस्कन्धविक्रान्तो वृषभाक्षो नरर्षभः ।
तावकानां बभौ मध्ये गवां मध्ये यथा वृषः ॥६॥

6. vṛṣabhaskandhavikrānto vṛṣabhākṣo nararṣabhaḥ ,

The best of men (nararṣabhaḥ), with shoulders as mighty as a bull's and eyes like a bull's, shone among your warriors just as a bull stands out among cows.
मत्तद्विरदसंकाशं मत्तद्विरदगामिनम् ।
प्रभिन्नमिव मातङ्गं यूथमध्ये व्यवस्थितम् ।
व्याघ्रा इव जिघांसन्तस्त्वदीयाभ्यद्रवन्रणे ॥७॥

7. mattadviradasaṁkāśaṁ mattadviradagāminam ,
prabhinnamiva mātaṅgaṁ yūthamadhye vyavasthitam ,
vyāghrā iva jighāṁsantastvadīyābhyadravanraṇe.

Your warriors, intent on killing like tigers, rushed into battle against him who stood among his troops like a rutting elephant (mātaṅga), resembling a frenzied elephant (dvirada) and moving with its gait.
द्रोणानीकमतिक्रान्तं भोजानीकं च दुस्तरम् ।
जलसंधार्णवं तीर्त्वा काम्बोजानां च वाहिनीम् ॥८॥

8. droṇānīkamatikrāntaṁ bhojānīkaṁ ca dustaram ,
jalasaṁdhārṇavaṁ tīrtvā kāmbojānāṁ ca vāhinīm.

Having surmounted Droṇa's army, and having crossed Bhōja's army which was formidable to overcome, and having traversed the ocean-like army of Jalasandha, as well as the force of the Kāmbojas -
हार्दिक्यमकरान्मुक्तं तीर्णं वै सैन्यसागरम् ।
परिवव्रुः सुसंक्रुद्धास्त्वदीयाः सात्यकिं रथाः ॥९॥

9. hārdikyamakarānmuktaṁ tīrṇaṁ vai sainyasāgaram ,

Your highly enraged charioteers then surrounded Sātyaki, who had indeed crossed the ocean of armies, an ocean which had been cleared of the crocodile-like warriors of Hārdikya.
दुर्योधनश्चित्रसेनो दुःशासनविविंशती ।
शकुनिर्दुःसहश्चैव युवा दुर्मर्षणः क्रथः ॥१०॥

Among them were Duryodhana, Citrasena, Duḥśāsana, Viviṃśati, Śakuni, Duḥsaha, and indeed Yuvan, Durmarṣaṇa, and Kratha.
अन्ये च बहवः शूराः शस्त्रवन्तो दुरासदाः ।
पृष्ठतः सात्यकिं यान्तमन्वधावन्नमर्षिताः ॥११॥

11. anye ca bahavaḥ śūrāḥ śastravanto durāsadāḥ ,

anye ca bahavaḥ śūrāḥ śastravantaḥ durāsadāḥ

And many other armed, formidable, and infuriated heroes also pursued Sātyaki from behind as he proceeded.
अथ शब्दो महानासीत्तव सैन्यस्य मारिष ।
मारुतोद्धूतवेगस्य सागरस्येव पर्वणि ॥१२॥

12. atha śabdo mahānāsīttava sainyasya māriṣa ,

Now, O respected one, the roar of your army was immense, like that of an ocean whose powerful currents are stirred by the wind during a high tide.
तानभिद्रवतः सर्वान्समीक्ष्य शिनिपुंगवः ।
शनैर्याहीति यन्तारमब्रवीत्प्रहसन्निव ॥१३॥

13. tānabhidravataḥ sarvānsamīkṣya śinipuṁgavaḥ ,
śanairyāhīti yantāramabravītprahasanniva.

śanaiḥ yāhi iti yantāram abravīt prahasan iva

yantāram abravīt,

Observing all those warriors rushing towards them, Sātyaki, the foremost of the Śinis, spoke to his charioteer, saying, "Go slowly," as if he were laughing.
इदमेति समुद्धूतं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य यद्बलम् ।
मामेवाभिमुखं तूर्णं गजाश्वरथपत्तिमत् ॥१४॥

14. idameti samuddhūtaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrasya yadbalam ,

Look, this agitated army of Dhṛtarāṣṭra's sons, equipped with elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry, is swiftly advancing directly towards me.
नादयन्वै दिशः सर्वा रथघोषेण सारथे ।
पृथिवीं चान्तरिक्षं च कम्पयन्सागरानपि ॥१५॥

15.
O charioteer, it is indeed causing all directions to reverberate with the roar of its chariots, shaking the earth, the sky, and even the oceans.
एतद्बलार्णवं तात वारयिष्ये महारणे ।
पौर्णमास्यामिवोद्धूतं वेलेव सलिलाशयम् ॥१६॥

16. etadbalārṇavaṁ tāta vārayiṣye mahāraṇe ,
paurṇamāsyāmivoddhūtaṁ veleva salilāśayam.

Dear one, in this great battle, I will restrain this ocean-like army, just as a shore holds back a body of water agitated on a full moon day.
पश्य मे सूत विक्रान्तमिन्द्रस्येव महामृधे ।
एष सैन्यानि शत्रूणां विधमामि शितैः शरैः ॥१७॥

17. paśya me sūta vikrāntamindrasyeva mahāmṛdhe ,
eṣa sainyāni śatrūṇāṁ vidhamāmi śitaiḥ śaraiḥ.

Charioteer, behold my valor in this great battle, like that of Indra. I will indeed scatter the enemies' armies with sharp arrows.
निहतानाहवे पश्य पदात्यश्वरथद्विपान् ।

In battle, behold thousands of infantry, cavalry, chariots, and elephants, deprived of life (vigata-asu), slain by my fire-like arrows.
इत्येवं ब्रुवतस्तस्य सात्यकेरमितौजसः ।
समीपं सैनिकास्ते तु शीघ्रमीयुर्युयुत्सवः ।
जह्याद्रवस्व तिष्ठेति पश्य पश्येति वादिनः ॥१९॥

19. ityevaṁ bruvatastasya sātyakeramitaujasaḥ ,
samīpaṁ sainikāste tu śīghramīyuryuyutsavaḥ ,
jahyādravasva tiṣṭheti paśya paśyeti vādinaḥ.

jahyādravasva tiṣṭheti paśya paśyeti vādinaḥ.

iti evam bruvataḥ tasya sātyakeḥ
amita-ojasaḥ samīpam sainikāḥ te tu
śīghram īyuḥ yuyutsavaḥ jahyāt dravasva
tiṣṭha iti paśya paśya iti vādinaḥ
amita-ojasaḥ samīpam sainikāḥ te tu
śīghram īyuḥ yuyutsavaḥ jahyāt dravasva

iti evam amitojasaḥ tasya sātyakeḥ
bruvataḥ te sainikāḥ tu yuyutsavaḥ
śīghram samīpam īyuḥ jahyāt dravasva
tiṣṭha iti paśya paśya iti vādinaḥ
bruvataḥ te sainikāḥ tu yuyutsavaḥ
śīghram samīpam īyuḥ jahyāt dravasva

As Satyakī, of immeasurable prowess, spoke thus, those soldiers, eager to fight, quickly approached him, shouting: 'Strike!', 'Run!', 'Stand!', and 'Behold! Behold!'
तानेवं ब्रुवतो वीरान्सात्यकिर्निशितैः शरैः ।
जघान त्रिशतानश्वान्कुञ्जरांश्च चतुःशतान् ॥२०॥

Satyaki, with his sharp arrows, killed three hundred horses and four hundred elephants belonging to those warriors who were speaking in that manner.

A tumultuous and destructive combat, resembling the battle between gods and demons, then began between him (Satyaki) and those bowmen.

O venerable one, the grandson of Shini (Satyaki) confronted your son's army, which was like a mass of clouds, with arrows that resembled venomous snakes.

O great king, though that valorous hero (Satyaki) was being obscured by a barrage of arrows in battle, he fearlessly killed many of your men.

O King, O Lord, I witnessed a very great marvel there: not a single arrow from Satyaki ever went in vain.

That great ocean of an army, teeming with chariots, elephants, and horses, and agitated by waves of infantry, reached the boundary (velā) of Śaineya (Satyaki) and stood firm.

That army, with its bewildered men, elephants, and horses, repeatedly moved in circles. Being struck down from all sides by his (Satyaki's) arrows, it wandered here and there, just like cows distressed by the cold.

There I saw no infantryman, no chariot, no elephant, no rider, and no horse that was unhit by the arrows of Yuyudhana (Satyaki).

O King (Dhṛtarāṣṭra), Arjuna did not cause such destruction in that battle as Satyaki inflicted upon the armies. O best of Bharatas, the grandson of Shini (Satyaki) is fighting in a manner that surpasses even Arjuna.

Then King Duryodhana pierced Satyaki's charioteer with three sharp arrows, and with four (other sharp arrows), he struck four of his horses.

And having pierced Satyaki with three (arrows), he (Duryodhana) again struck him with eight (more). Duḥśāsana, for his part, pierced the chief of the Shinis (Satyaki) with sixteen (arrows).

Shakuni struck (Satyaki) with twenty-five (arrows), and Citrasena with five. Duḥsaha then pierced Satyaki in the chest with fifteen (arrows).

O great king, the foremost among the Vṛṣṇis (Sātyaki), smiling despite being struck by arrows, pierced all of them with three arrows each.

Having deeply wounded his enemies with extremely sharp arrows, Śaineya (Sātyaki), with swift valor, moved about in the battle like a hawk.

Having cut Saubala's (Śakuni's) bow and severed his arm-guard, he (Sātyaki) then pierced Duryodhana with three arrows in the middle of his chest.

The foremost of the Śinis (Sātyaki) pierced Citrasena with a hundred (arrows), Duḥsaha with ten, and Duḥśāsana with twenty.

Then, O lord of men, your brother-in-law, taking another bow, struck Satyaki with eight arrows, and again pierced him with five.

Duryodhana, O Bhārata, having struck Madhava (Satyaki) with seventy-three arrows, then pierced his (Satyaki's) charioteer with three sharp arrows.

O lord, when that charioteer had fallen, your son's chariot was carried away from the battlefield by those horses, which had become frantic.

O Bhārata, seeing that army scattered there, Sātyaki showered (them) with sharp arrows, which had golden shafts and were honed on stone.
