युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
एवमेतत्करिष्यामि यथात्थ पृथिवीपते ।
भूयश्चैवानुशास्योऽहं भवता पार्थिवर्षभ ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
evametatkariṣyāmi yathāttha pṛthivīpate ,
bhūyaścaivānuśāsyo'haṁ bhavatā pārthivarṣabha.

1. Yudhiṣṭhira said, 'O King, I will certainly do this as you have said. Moreover, O best of rulers, I am to be instructed by you.'
भीष्मे स्वर्गमनुप्राप्ते गते च मधुसूदने ।
विदुरे संजये चैव कोऽन्यो मां वक्तुमर्हति ॥२॥
2. bhīṣme svargamanuprāpte gate ca madhusūdane ,
vidure saṁjaye caiva ko'nyo māṁ vaktumarhati.

vidure saṃjaye ca eva kaḥ anyaḥ mām vaktum arhati

2. With Bhīṣma having attained heaven, and Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa) having departed, and with Vidura and Sañjaya also gone, who else is qualified to instruct me?
यत्तु मामनुशास्तीह भवानद्य हिते स्थितः ।
कर्तास्म्येतन्महीपाल निर्वृतो भव भारत ॥३॥
3. yattu māmanuśāstīha bhavānadya hite sthitaḥ ,
kartāsmyetanmahīpāla nirvṛto bhava bhārata.
3. yat tu mām anuśāsti iha bhavān adya hite sthitaḥ
kartā asmi etat mahīpāla nirvṛtaḥ bhava bhārata
3. mahīpāla bhārata tu adya iha hite sthitaḥ bhavān
yat mām anuśāsti etat kartā asmi nirvṛtaḥ bhava
3. But whatever you instruct me here today, O King, who are intent on my welfare, I will certainly carry that out. Be content, O Bhārata (Bhīṣma).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तः स राजर्षिर्धर्मराजेन धीमता ।
कौन्तेयं समनुज्ञातुमियेष भरतर्षभ ॥४॥
4. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktaḥ sa rājarṣirdharmarājena dhīmatā ,
kaunteyaṁ samanujñātumiyeṣa bharatarṣabha.
4. vaiśampāyana uvāca evam uktaḥ saḥ rājarṣiḥ dharmarājena
dhīmatā kaunteyam samanujñātum iyeṣa bharatarṣabha

4. Vaiśampāyana said: 'O best among the Bhāratas, thus addressed by the wise king (dharma-rāja) Yudhiṣṭhira, that royal sage (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) desired to bid farewell to Yudhiṣṭhira.'
पुत्र विश्रम्यतां तावन्ममापि बलवाञ्श्रमः ।
इत्युक्त्वा प्राविशद्राजा गान्धार्या भवनं तदा ॥५॥
5. putra viśramyatāṁ tāvanmamāpi balavāñśramaḥ ,
ityuktvā prāviśadrājā gāndhāryā bhavanaṁ tadā.
5. putra viśramyatām tāvat mama api balavān śramaḥ
iti uktvā prāviśat rājā gāndhāryāḥ bhavanam tadā
5. putra tāvat viśramyatām mama api balavān śramaḥ
iti uktvā tadā rājā gāndhāryāḥ bhavanam prāviśat
5. 'Son, rest for a while, as I too am greatly fatigued,' having said this, the king then entered Gāndhārī's abode.
तमासनगतं देवी गान्धारी धर्मचारिणी ।
उवाच काले कालज्ञा प्रजापतिसमं पतिम् ॥६॥
6. tamāsanagataṁ devī gāndhārī dharmacāriṇī ,
uvāca kāle kālajñā prajāpatisamaṁ patim.
6. tam āsanagatam devī gāndhārī dharmacāriṇī
uvāca kāle kālajñā prajāpatisamam patim
6. devī gāndhārī dharmacāriṇī kālajñā kāle
āsanagatam prajāpatisamam tam patim uvāca
6. Then the revered Gāndhārī, who was devoted to natural law (dharma) and knew the proper time, spoke at the opportune moment to her husband, who was seated and resembled a creator (Prajāpati).
अनुज्ञातः स्वयं तेन व्यासेनापि महर्षिणा ।
युधिष्ठिरस्यानुमते कदारण्यं गमिष्यसि ॥७॥
7. anujñātaḥ svayaṁ tena vyāsenāpi maharṣiṇā ,
yudhiṣṭhirasyānumate kadāraṇyaṁ gamiṣyasi.
7. anujñātaḥ svayam tena vyāsena api maharṣiṇā
yudhiṣṭhirasya anumate kadā araṇyam gamiṣyasi
7. svayam tena maharṣiṇā vyāsena api yudhiṣṭhirasya
anumate anujñātaḥ araṇyam kadā gamiṣyasi
7. Having been permitted (to go to the forest) by your own will, and also by that great sage Vyāsa, and with Yudhiṣṭhira's consent, when will you depart for the forest?
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
गान्धार्यहमनुज्ञातः स्वयं पित्रा महात्मना ।
युधिष्ठिरस्यानुमते गन्तास्मि नचिराद्वनम् ॥८॥
8. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
gāndhāryahamanujñātaḥ svayaṁ pitrā mahātmanā ,
yudhiṣṭhirasyānumate gantāsmi nacirādvanam.
8. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca gāndhāri aham anujñātaḥ svayam pitrā
mahātmanā yudhiṣṭhirasya anumate gantā asmi na cirāt vanam
8. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said, "Gandhari, I have been given permission by the great-souled father himself, and with Yudhiṣṭhira's consent, I shall soon go to the forest."
अहं हि नाम सर्वेषां तेषां दुर्द्यूतदेविनाम् ।
पुत्राणां दातुमिच्छामि प्रेत्यभावानुगं वसु ।
सर्वप्रकृतिसांनिध्यं कारयित्वा स्ववेश्मनि ॥९॥
9. ahaṁ hi nāma sarveṣāṁ teṣāṁ durdyūtadevinām ,
putrāṇāṁ dātumicchāmi pretyabhāvānugaṁ vasu ,
sarvaprakṛtisāṁnidhyaṁ kārayitvā svaveśmani.
9. aham hi nāma sarveṣām teṣām
durdyūtadevinām putrāṇām dātum icchāmi
pretyabhāvānugam vasu
sarvaprakṛtisāṃnidhyam kārayitvā svaveśmani
9. Indeed, I wish to give to all those sons of mine who played that terrible game of dice, wealth that will follow them after death, after having assembled all the citizens and attendants in my own house.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा धर्मराजाय प्रेषयामास पार्थिवः ।
स च तद्वचनात्सर्वं समानिन्ये महीपतिः ॥१०॥
10. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktvā dharmarājāya preṣayāmāsa pārthivaḥ ,
sa ca tadvacanātsarvaṁ samāninye mahīpatiḥ.
10. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca iti uktvā dharmarājāya preṣayāmāsa
pārthivaḥ saḥ ca tat vacanāt sarvam samāninye mahīpatiḥ
10. Vaiśampāyana said: Having spoken thus to the king of righteousness (dharma-rāja), the sovereign (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) sent a message. And that king (Yudhiṣṭhira), by virtue of his (Dhṛtarāṣṭra's) words, assembled everything.
ततो निष्क्रम्य नृपतिस्तस्मादन्तःपुरात्तदा ।
सर्वं सुहृज्जनं चैव सर्वाश्च प्रकृतीस्तथा ।
समवेतांश्च तान्सर्वान्पौरजानपदानथ ॥११॥
11. tato niṣkramya nṛpatistasmādantaḥpurāttadā ,
sarvaṁ suhṛjjanaṁ caiva sarvāśca prakṛtīstathā ,
samavetāṁśca tānsarvānpaurajānapadānatha.
11. tataḥ niṣkramya nṛpatiḥ tasmāt
antaḥpurāt tadā sarvam suhṛj-janam ca
eva sarvāḥ ca prakṛtīḥ tathā samavetān
ca tān sarvān paurajānapadān atha
11. Then, having exited from that inner palace at that time, the king (Yudhiṣṭhira) thereupon gathered all his friends, all the attendants (prakṛti) and, indeed, all those assembled city dwellers and country folk.
ब्राह्मणांश्च महीपालान्नानादेशसमागतान् ।
ततः प्राह महातेजा धृतराष्ट्रो महीपतिः ॥१२॥
12. brāhmaṇāṁśca mahīpālānnānādeśasamāgatān ,
tataḥ prāha mahātejā dhṛtarāṣṭro mahīpatiḥ.
12. brāhmaṇān ca mahīpālān nānādeśasamāgatān
tataḥ praha mahātejāḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mahīpatiḥ
12. tataḥ mahātejāḥ mahīpatiḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ
nānādeśasamāgatān brāhmaṇān ca mahīpālān praha
12. Then, the greatly glorious King Dhṛtarāṣṭra spoke to the brahmins and rulers who had assembled from various countries.
शृण्वन्त्येकाग्रमनसो ब्राह्मणाः कुरुजाङ्गलाः ।
क्षत्रियाश्चैव वैश्याश्च शूद्राश्चैव समागताः ॥१३॥
13. śṛṇvantyekāgramanaso brāhmaṇāḥ kurujāṅgalāḥ ,
kṣatriyāścaiva vaiśyāśca śūdrāścaiva samāgatāḥ.
13. śṛṇvanti ekāgramanasaḥ brāhmaṇāḥ kurujāṅgalāḥ
kṣatriyāḥ ca eva vaiśyāḥ ca śūdrāḥ ca eva samāgatāḥ
13. kurujāṅgalāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyāḥ ca eva vaiśyāḥ
ca śūdrāḥ ca eva samāgatāḥ ekāgramanasaḥ śṛṇvanti
13. The brahmins from Kurujāṅgala, and indeed the kṣatriyas, vaiśyas, and śūdras who have assembled, listen with concentrated minds.
भवन्तः कुरवश्चैव बहुकालं सहोषिताः ।
परस्परस्य सुहृदः परस्परहिते रताः ॥१४॥
14. bhavantaḥ kuravaścaiva bahukālaṁ sahoṣitāḥ ,
parasparasya suhṛdaḥ parasparahite ratāḥ.
14. bhavantaḥ kuravaḥ ca eva bahukālam sahoṣitāḥ
parasparasya suhṛdaḥ parasparahite ratāḥ
14. bhavantaḥ ca eva kuravaḥ bahukālam sahoṣitāḥ
suhṛdaḥ parasparasya parasparahite ratāḥ
14. You, and indeed the Kauravas, have lived together for a long time. You are friends to one another, devoted to each other's welfare.
यदिदानीमहं ब्रूयामस्मिन्काल उपस्थिते ।
तथा भवद्भिः कर्तव्यमविचार्य वचो मम ॥१५॥
15. yadidānīmahaṁ brūyāmasminkāla upasthite ,
tathā bhavadbhiḥ kartavyamavicārya vaco mama.
15. yat idānīm aham brūyām asmin kāle upasthite
tathā bhavadbhiḥ kartavyam avicārya vacaḥ mama
15. idānīm asmin kāle upasthite aham yat brūyām,
mama vacaḥ tathā avicārya bhavadbhiḥ kartavyam
15. Whatever I may speak now, at this opportune moment, that word of mine should be carried out by you without hesitation.
अरण्यगमने बुद्धिर्गान्धारीसहितस्य मे ।
व्यासस्यानुमते राज्ञस्तथा कुन्तीसुतस्य च ।
भवन्तोऽप्यनुजानन्तु मा वोऽन्या भूद्विचारणा ॥१६॥
16. araṇyagamane buddhirgāndhārīsahitasya me ,
vyāsasyānumate rājñastathā kuntīsutasya ca ,
bhavanto'pyanujānantu mā vo'nyā bhūdvicāraṇā.
16. araṇyagamane buddhiḥ gāndhārīsahitasya
me vyāsasya anumate rājñaḥ
tathā kuntīsutasya ca bhavantaḥ api
anujānantu mā vaḥ anyā bhūt vicāraṇā
16. me gāndhārīsahitasya araṇyagamane
buddhiḥ vyāsasya rājñaḥ tathā
kuntīsutasya ca anumate bhavantaḥ api
anujānantu vaḥ anyā vicāraṇā mā bhūt
16. My intention, along with Gāndhārī, is to go to the forest. This is with the approval of Vyāsa, the king, and also Kuntī's son. May all of you (present here) also grant permission, and let there be no other consideration on your part.
अस्माकं भवतां चैव येयं प्रीतिर्हि शाश्वती ।
न चान्येष्वस्ति देशेषु राज्ञामिति मतिर्मम ॥१७॥
17. asmākaṁ bhavatāṁ caiva yeyaṁ prītirhi śāśvatī ,
na cānyeṣvasti deśeṣu rājñāmiti matirmama.
17. asmākaṃ bhavatāṃ ca eva yā iyaṃ prītiḥ hi śāśvatī
na ca anyeṣu asti deśeṣu rājñām iti matiḥ mama
17. yā iyaṃ asmākaṃ bhavatāṃ ca eva śāśvatī prītiḥ hi
asti anyeṣu deśeṣu rājñām ca na asti iti mama matiḥ
17. Indeed, this eternal affection exists between us and you. It is my opinion that such a bond does not exist among other kings in other lands.
श्रान्तोऽस्मि वयसानेन तथा पुत्रविनाकृतः ।
उपवासकृशश्चास्मि गान्धारीसहितोऽनघाः ॥१८॥
18. śrānto'smi vayasānena tathā putravinākṛtaḥ ,
upavāsakṛśaścāsmi gāndhārīsahito'naghāḥ.
18. śrāntaḥ asmi vayasā anena tathā putravinākṛtaḥ
upavāsakṛśaḥ ca asmi gāndhārīsahitaḥ anaghāḥ
18. anaghāḥ anena vayasā śrāntaḥ asmi tathā
putravinākṛtaḥ gāndhārīsahitaḥ ca upavāsakṛśaḥ asmi
18. I am exhausted by this old age and bereft of sons. Moreover, I am emaciated by fasting, accompanied by Gāndhārī, O sinless ones!
युधिष्ठिरगते राज्ये प्राप्तश्चास्मि सुखं महत् ।
मन्ये दुर्योधनैश्वर्याद्विशिष्टमिति सत्तमाः ॥१९॥
19. yudhiṣṭhiragate rājye prāptaścāsmi sukhaṁ mahat ,
manye duryodhanaiśvaryādviśiṣṭamiti sattamāḥ.
19. yudhiṣṭhiragate rājye prāptaḥ ca asmi sukhaṃ mahat
manye duryodhanaiśvaryāt viśiṣṭaṃ iti sattamāḥ
19. sattamāḥ rājye yudhiṣṭhiragate mahat sukhaṃ prāptaḥ
ca asmi duryodhanaiśvaryāt viśiṣṭaṃ iti manye
19. Now that the kingdom has passed to Yudhiṣṭhira, I have attained great happiness. I consider this happiness to be superior to the prosperity enjoyed by Duryodhana, O best among men!
मम त्वन्धस्य वृद्धस्य हतपुत्रस्य का गतिः ।
ऋते वनं महाभागास्तन्मानुज्ञातुमर्हथ ॥२०॥
20. mama tvandhasya vṛddhasya hataputrasya kā gatiḥ ,
ṛte vanaṁ mahābhāgāstanmānujñātumarhatha.
20. mama tu andhasya vṛddhasya hataputrasya kā gatiḥ
ṛte vanam mahābhāgāḥ tat mā anujñātum arhatha
20. mahābhāgāḥ,
andhasya vṛddhasya hataputrasya mama tu ṛte vanam kā gatiḥ? tat mā anujñātum arhatha
20. Indeed, what future remains for me, who am blind, aged, and whose sons have been slain, other than the forest? Therefore, O noble ones, you ought to grant me permission.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सर्वे ते कुरुजाङ्गलाः ।
बाष्पसंदिग्धया वाचा रुरुदुर्भरतर्षभ ॥२१॥
21. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā sarve te kurujāṅgalāḥ ,
bāṣpasaṁdigdhayā vācā rurudurbharatarṣabha.
21. tasya tat vacanam śrutvā sarve te kurujāṅgalāḥ
bāṣpasaṃdigdhayā vācā ruruduḥ bharatarṣabha
21. bharatarṣabha,
tasya tat vacanam śrutvā sarve te kurujāṅgalāḥ bāṣpasaṃdigdhayā vācā ruruduḥ
21. O best of the Bhāratas, having heard his words, all those people of Kurujāṅgala wept with voices choked by tears.
तानविब्रुवतः किंचिद्दुःखशोकपरायणान् ।
पुनरेव महातेजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥२२॥
22. tānavibruvataḥ kiṁcidduḥkhaśokaparāyaṇān ,
punareva mahātejā dhṛtarāṣṭro'bravīdidam.
22. tān avibruvataḥ kiñcit duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇān
punar eva mahātejāḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ abravīt idam
22. mahātejāḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ duḥkhaśokaparāyaṇān
kiñcit avibruvataḥ tān punar eva idam abravīt
22. To them, who said nothing, being completely overcome by grief and sorrow, the greatly energetic Dhṛtarāṣṭra again spoke these words.
