तस्मिञ्शब्दे मृदौ जाते पाण्डवैर्निहते बले ।
अश्वैः सप्तशतैः शिष्टैरुपावर्तत सौबलः ॥१॥

1. Sañjaya said: As the tumultuous sound of battle subsided and the army was being destroyed by the Pāṇḍavas, the son of Subala (Śakuni) retreated with seven hundred remaining horses.
स यात्वा वाहिनीं तूर्णमब्रवीत्त्वरयन्युधि ।
युध्यध्वमिति संहृष्टाः पुनः पुनररिंदमः ।
अपृच्छत्क्षत्रियांस्तत्र क्व नु राजा महारथः ॥२॥
2. sa yātvā vāhinīṁ tūrṇamabravīttvarayanyudhi ,
yudhyadhvamiti saṁhṛṣṭāḥ punaḥ punarariṁdamaḥ ,
apṛcchatkṣatriyāṁstatra kva nu rājā mahārathaḥ.

tvarayan yudhi yudhyadhvam iti saṃhṛṣṭāḥ
punaḥ punaḥ arindamaḥ apṛcchat

2. He, the subduer of enemies (Śakuni), having swiftly gone to the army, repeatedly urged (the warriors) in battle, saying, 'Fight!' (The warriors were) invigorated. There he asked the Kṣatriyas, 'Where now is the great charioteer king?'
शकुनेस्तु वचः श्रुत्वा त ऊचुर्भरतर्षभ ।
असौ तिष्ठति कौरव्यो रणमध्ये महारथः ॥३॥
3. śakunestu vacaḥ śrutvā ta ūcurbharatarṣabha ,
asau tiṣṭhati kauravyo raṇamadhye mahārathaḥ.

3. O best among the Bharatas, after hearing Śakuni's words, they said: "That Kuru warrior, a great charioteer, stands in the midst of the battle."
यत्रैतत्सुमहच्छत्रं पूर्णचन्द्रसमप्रभम् ।
यत्रैते सतलत्राणा रथास्तिष्ठन्ति दंशिताः ॥४॥
4. yatraitatsumahacchatraṁ pūrṇacandrasamaprabham ,
yatraite satalatrāṇā rathāstiṣṭhanti daṁśitāḥ.

4. Where this magnificent umbrella shines with the brilliance of the full moon, and where these chariots, equipped with bowstrings and fully armored, stand.
यत्रैष शब्दस्तुमुलः पर्जन्यनिनदोपमः ।
तत्र गच्छ द्रुतं राजंस्ततो द्रक्ष्यसि कौरवम् ॥५॥
5. yatraiṣa śabdastumulaḥ parjanyaninadopamaḥ ,
tatra gaccha drutaṁ rājaṁstato drakṣyasi kauravam.
5. yatra eṣa śabdaḥ tumulaḥ parjanyanindopamaḥ tatra
gaccha drutam rājan tataḥ drakṣyasi kauravam
5. rājan yatra eṣa parjanyanindopamaḥ tumulaḥ śabdaḥ

5. O king, go quickly to where this tumultuous sound, resembling the roar of thunder, emanates; there you will then see the Kuru warrior (Duryodhana).
एवमुक्तस्तु तैः शूरैः शकुनिः सौबलस्तदा ।
प्रययौ तत्र यत्रासौ पुत्रस्तव नराधिप ।
सर्वतः संवृतो वीरैः समरेष्वनिवर्तिभिः ॥६॥
6. evamuktastu taiḥ śūraiḥ śakuniḥ saubalastadā ,
prayayau tatra yatrāsau putrastava narādhipa ,
sarvataḥ saṁvṛto vīraiḥ samareṣvanivartibhiḥ.
6. evam uktaḥ tu taiḥ śūraiḥ śakuniḥ
saubalaḥ tadā prayayau tatra yatra
asau putraḥ tava narādhipa sarvataḥ
saṃvṛtaḥ vīraiḥ samareṣu anivartibhiḥ
6. narādhipa evam taiḥ śūraiḥ uktaḥ tu
saubalaḥ śakuniḥ tadā tatra prayayau
yatra asau tava putraḥ anivartibhiḥ
vīraiḥ samareṣu sarvataḥ saṃvṛtaḥ (āsīt)
6. O king of men, after Śakuni, the son of Subala, was thus addressed by those heroes, he then proceeded to where your son (Duryodhana) was, surrounded on all sides by valiant warriors who never retreat in battles.
ततो दुर्योधनं दृष्ट्वा रथानीके व्यवस्थितम् ।
सरथांस्तावकान्सर्वान्हर्षयञ्शकुनिस्ततः ॥७॥
7. tato duryodhanaṁ dṛṣṭvā rathānīke vyavasthitam ,
sarathāṁstāvakānsarvānharṣayañśakunistataḥ.
7. tataḥ duryodhanam dṛṣṭvā rathānīke vyavasthitam
sa-rathān tāvakān sarvān harṣayan śakuniḥ tataḥ
7. tataḥ śakuniḥ duryodhanam rathānīke vyavasthitam dṛṣṭvā,
tataḥ sarvān sa-rathān tāvakān harṣayan
7. Then, seeing Duryodhana arrayed in the chariot formation, Shakuni, in turn, began gladdening all your chariot-mounted warriors.
दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यं हृष्टरूपो विशां पते ।
कृतकार्यमिवात्मानं मन्यमानोऽब्रवीन्नृपम् ॥८॥
8. duryodhanamidaṁ vākyaṁ hṛṣṭarūpo viśāṁ pate ,
kṛtakāryamivātmānaṁ manyamāno'bravīnnṛpam.
8. duryodhanam idam vākyam hṛṣṭa-rūpaḥ viśām pate
kṛta-kāryam iva ātmānam manyamānaḥ abravīt nṛpam
8. viśām pate,
hṛṣṭa-rūpaḥ kṛta-kāryam iva ātmānam manyamānaḥ nṛpam duryodhanam idam vākyam abravīt.
8. O lord of the people (viśām pate), Shakuni, joyful in appearance and considering himself (ātman) to have accomplished his task, spoke this statement to King Duryodhana.
जहि राजन्रथानीकमश्वाः सर्वे जिता मया ।
नात्यक्त्वा जीवितं संख्ये शक्यो जेतुं युधिष्ठिरः ॥९॥
9. jahi rājanrathānīkamaśvāḥ sarve jitā mayā ,
nātyaktvā jīvitaṁ saṁkhye śakyo jetuṁ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
9. jahi rājan rathānīkam aśvāḥ sarve jitāḥ mayā na
atyaktvā jīvitam saṅkhye śakyaḥ jetum yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
9. rājan,
rathānīkam jahi! sarve aśvāḥ mayā jitāḥ.
saṅkhye jīvitam na atyaktvā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ jetum na śakyaḥ.
9. "O King, destroy the chariot array! All their horses have been conquered by me. Yudhishthira cannot be defeated in battle without abandoning one's own life."
हते तस्मिन्रथानीके पाण्डवेनाभिपालिते ।
गजानेतान्हनिष्यामः पदातींश्चेतरांस्तथा ॥१०॥
10. hate tasminrathānīke pāṇḍavenābhipālite ,
gajānetānhaniṣyāmaḥ padātīṁścetarāṁstathā.
10. hate tasmin rathānīke pāṇḍavena abhipālite
gajān etān haniṣyāmaḥ padātīn ca itarān tathā
10. pāṇḍavena abhipālite tasmin rathānīke hate,
etān gajān ca itarān padātīn tathā haniṣyāmaḥ.
10. Once that chariot formation, protected by the Pandava (pāṇḍava), is destroyed, we will then kill these elephants as well as the other foot soldiers.
श्रुत्वा तु वचनं तस्य तावका जयगृद्धिनः ।
जवेनाभ्यपतन्हृष्टाः पाण्डवानामनीकिनीम् ॥११॥
11. śrutvā tu vacanaṁ tasya tāvakā jayagṛddhinaḥ ,
javenābhyapatanhṛṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavānāmanīkinīm.
11. śrutvā tu vacanam tasya tāvakāḥ jayagṛddhinaḥ
javena abhyapatan hṛṣṭāḥ pāṇḍavānām anīkinīm
11. tāvakāḥ jayagṛddhinaḥ hṛṣṭāḥ tasya vacanam

11. Having heard his words, your men, greedy for victory and delighted, swiftly rushed upon the army of the Pāṇḍavas.
सर्वे विवृततूणीराः प्रगृहीतशरासनाः ।
शरासनानि धुन्वानाः सिंहनादं प्रचक्रिरे ॥१२॥
12. sarve vivṛtatūṇīrāḥ pragṛhītaśarāsanāḥ ,
śarāsanāni dhunvānāḥ siṁhanādaṁ pracakrire.
12. sarve vivṛtatūṇīrāḥ pragṛhītaśarāsanāḥ
śarāsanāni dhunvānāḥ siṃhanādam pracakrire

12. All of them, with their quivers open and bows grasped, twanging their bows, let out a lion's roar.
ततो ज्यातलनिर्घोषः पुनरासीद्विशां पते ।
प्रादुरासीच्छराणां च सुमुक्तानां सुदारुणः ॥१३॥
13. tato jyātalanirghoṣaḥ punarāsīdviśāṁ pate ,
prādurāsīccharāṇāṁ ca sumuktānāṁ sudāruṇaḥ.
13. tataḥ jyātalanirghoṣaḥ punaḥ āsīt viśām pate
prāduḥ āsīt śarāṇām ca sumuktānām sudāruṇaḥ
13. tataḥ punaḥ viśām pate jyātalanirghoṣaḥ āsīt
ca sumuktānām śarāṇām sudāruṇaḥ prāduḥ āsīt
13. Then again, O lord of men, there was the loud sound of bowstrings, and also the exceedingly dreadful sound of arrows well-released.
तान्समीपगतान्दृष्ट्वा जवेनोद्यतकार्मुकान् ।
उवाच देवकीपुत्रं कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ॥१४॥
14. tānsamīpagatāndṛṣṭvā javenodyatakārmukān ,
uvāca devakīputraṁ kuntīputro dhanaṁjayaḥ.
14. tān samīpagatān dṛṣṭvā javena udyatakārmukān
uvāca devakīputram kuntīputraḥ dhanañjayaḥ
14. kuntīputraḥ dhanañjayaḥ samīpagatān javena
udyatakārmukān tān dṛṣṭvā devakīputram uvāca
14. Having seen those (warriors) who had swiftly approached with their bows raised, Dhanañjaya, the son of Kuntī, spoke to Devakī's son (Kṛṣṇa).
चोदयाश्वानसंभ्रान्तः प्रविशैतद्बलार्णवम् ।
अन्तमद्य गमिष्यामि शत्रूणां निशितैः शरैः ॥१५॥
15. codayāśvānasaṁbhrāntaḥ praviśaitadbalārṇavam ,
antamadya gamiṣyāmi śatrūṇāṁ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ.
15. codaya aśvān asaṃbhrāntaḥ praviśa etat balārṇavam
antam adya gamiṣyāmi śatrūṇām niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
15. asaṃbhrāntaḥ aśvān codaya etat balārṇavam praviśa
adya niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ śatrūṇām antam gamiṣyāmi
15. Drive the horses without confusion; enter this ocean of forces. Today, I will reach the end of the enemies with sharpened arrows.
अष्टादश दिनान्यद्य युद्धस्यास्य जनार्दन ।
वर्तमानस्य महतः समासाद्य परस्परम् ॥१६॥
16. aṣṭādaśa dinānyadya yuddhasyāsya janārdana ,
vartamānasya mahataḥ samāsādya parasparam.
16. aṣṭādaśa dināni adya yuddhasya asya janārdana
vartamānasya mahataḥ samāsādya parasparam
16. janārdana adya asya mahataḥ parasparam
samāsādya vartamānasya yuddhasya aṣṭādaśa dināni
16. Eighteen days have passed today, Janārdana, of this great war which has been occurring mutually.
अनन्तकल्पा ध्वजिनी भूत्वा ह्येषां महात्मनाम् ।
क्षयमद्य गता युद्धे पश्य दैवं यथाविधम् ॥१७॥
17. anantakalpā dhvajinī bhūtvā hyeṣāṁ mahātmanām ,
kṣayamadya gatā yuddhe paśya daivaṁ yathāvidham.
17. anantakalpā dhvajinī bhūtvā hi eṣām mahātmanām
kṣayam adya gatā yuddhe paśya daivam yathāvidham
17. hi anantakalpā dhvajinī eṣām mahātmanām bhūtvā
adya yuddhe kṣayam gatā daivam yathāvidham paśya
17. Having been an immeasurable (anantakalpa) army for these great souls (mahātman), today it has met its destruction in battle. Behold fate (daiva) as it is!
समुद्रकल्पं तु बलं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य माधव ।
अस्मानासाद्य संजातं गोष्पदोपममच्युत ॥१८॥
18. samudrakalpaṁ tu balaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrasya mādhava ,
asmānāsādya saṁjātaṁ goṣpadopamamacyuta.
18. samudrakalpam tu balam dhārtarāṣṭrasya mādhava
asmān āsādya saṃjātam goṣpadopamam acyuta
18. mādhava acyuta tu dhārtarāṣṭrasya samudrakalpam
balam asmān āsādya goṣpadopamam saṃjātam
18. But the army of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, which was like an ocean (samudrakalpa), Madhava, has become like a cow's hoof-print (goṣpadopama) after encountering us, Acyuta.
हते भीष्मे च संदध्याच्छिवं स्यादिह माधव ।
न च तत्कृतवान्मूढो धार्तराष्ट्रः सुबालिशः ॥१९॥
19. hate bhīṣme ca saṁdadhyācchivaṁ syādiha mādhava ,
na ca tatkṛtavānmūḍho dhārtarāṣṭraḥ subāliśaḥ.
19. hate bhīṣme ca saṃdadhyāt śivam syāt iha mādhava
na ca tat kṛtavān mūḍhaḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ subāliśaḥ
19. mādhava,
bhīṣme hate ca,
iha śivam syāt saṃdadhyāt.
ca mūḍhaḥ subāliśaḥ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ tat na kṛtavān.
19. O Madhava, even after Bhishma was slain, peace could have been established, and auspiciousness would have ensued here. But that foolish and utterly childish son of Dhritarashtra (Dhārtarāṣṭra) did not do that.
उक्तं भीष्मेण यद्वाक्यं हितं पथ्यं च माधव ।
तच्चापि नासौ कृतवान्वीतबुद्धिः सुयोधनः ॥२०॥
20. uktaṁ bhīṣmeṇa yadvākyaṁ hitaṁ pathyaṁ ca mādhava ,
taccāpi nāsau kṛtavānvītabuddhiḥ suyodhanaḥ.
20. uktam bhīṣmeṇa yat vākyam hitam pathyam ca mādhava
tat ca api na asau kṛtavān vītabuddhiḥ suyodhanaḥ
20. mādhava,
bhīṣmeṇa yat hitam ca pathyam vākyam uktam,
tat ca api,
vītabuddhiḥ asau suyodhanaḥ na kṛtavān.
20. O Madhava, even that beneficial and wholesome advice which was spoken by Bhishma, that Suyodhana, being utterly devoid of intelligence, also did not follow.
तस्मिंस्तु पतिते भीष्मे प्रच्युते पृथिवीतले ।
न जाने कारणं किं नु येन युद्धमवर्तत ॥२१॥
21. tasmiṁstu patite bhīṣme pracyute pṛthivītale ,
na jāne kāraṇaṁ kiṁ nu yena yuddhamavartata.
21. tasmin tu patite bhīṣme pracyute pṛthivītale
na jāne kāraṇam kim nu yena yuddham avartata
21. tu tasmin bhīṣme pṛthivītale patite pracyute,
yena yuddham avartata,
kim kāraṇam nu na jāne.
21. But when that Bhishma had fallen, cast down upon the surface of the earth, I truly do not know what cause there was by which the battle (yuddha) continued.
मूढांस्तु सर्वथा मन्ये धार्तराष्ट्रान्सुबालिशान् ।
पतिते शंतनोः पुत्रे येऽकार्षुः संयुगं पुनः ॥२२॥
22. mūḍhāṁstu sarvathā manye dhārtarāṣṭrānsubāliśān ,
patite śaṁtanoḥ putre ye'kārṣuḥ saṁyugaṁ punaḥ.
22. mūḍhān tu sarvathā manye dhārtarāṣṭrān subāliśān
patite śaṃtanoḥ putre ye akārṣuḥ saṃyugam punaḥ
22. tu dhārtarāṣṭrān sarvathā mūḍhān subāliśān manye,
ye śaṃtanoḥ putre patite punaḥ saṃyugam akārṣuḥ.
22. But I consider the sons of Dhritarashtra (Dhārtarāṣṭra) to be utterly foolish and exceedingly childish, for they waged battle (saṃyuga) again even after the son of Shantanu (Bhishma) had fallen.
अनन्तरं च निहते द्रोणे ब्रह्मविदां वरे ।
राधेये च विकर्णे च नैवाशाम्यत वैशसम् ॥२३॥
23. anantaraṁ ca nihate droṇe brahmavidāṁ vare ,
rādheye ca vikarṇe ca naivāśāmyata vaiśasam.
23. anantaram ca nihate droṇe brahmavidām vare
rādheye ca vikarṇe ca na eva aśāmyata vaiśasam
23. anantaram ca droṇe brahmavidām vare rādheye
ca vikarṇe ca nihate vaiśasam na eva aśāmyata
23. And afterwards, even when Drona, the foremost among the knowers of (brahman), along with Radheya (Karna) and Vikarna, had been slain, the slaughter (vaiśasam) did not indeed subside.
अल्पावशिष्टे सैन्येऽस्मिन्सूतपुत्रे च पातिते ।
सपुत्रे वै नरव्याघ्रे नैवाशाम्यत वैशसम् ॥२४॥
24. alpāvaśiṣṭe sainye'sminsūtaputre ca pātite ,
saputre vai naravyāghre naivāśāmyata vaiśasam.
24. alpāvaśiṣṭe sainye asmin sūtaputre ca pātite
saputre vai naravyāghre na eva aśāmyata vaiśasam
24. asmin sainye alpāvaśiṣṭe sūtaputre naravyāghre
saputre ca pātite vai vaiśasam na eva aśāmyata
24. Even when this army had only a few remaining, and when the son of Suta (Karna), that tiger among men, had fallen along with his son, the slaughter (vaiśasam) did not indeed subside.
श्रुतायुषि हते शूरे जलसंधे च पौरवे ।
श्रुतायुधे च नृपतौ नैवाशाम्यत वैशसम् ॥२५॥
25. śrutāyuṣi hate śūre jalasaṁdhe ca paurave ,
śrutāyudhe ca nṛpatau naivāśāmyata vaiśasam.
25. śrutāyuṣi hate śūre jalasaṃdhe ca paurave
śrutāyudhe ca nṛpatau na eva aśāmyata vaiśasam
25. śūre śrutāyuṣi hate jalasaṃdhe paurave ca
śrutāyudhe nṛpatau ca vaiśasam na eva aśāmyata
25. Even when the hero Śrutāyu was slain, and when Jaḷasaṃdha, a descendant of Puru, and King Śrutāyudha were slain, the slaughter (vaiśasam) did not indeed subside.
भूरिश्रवसि शल्ये च शाल्वे चैव जनार्दन ।
आवन्त्येषु च वीरेषु नैवाशाम्यत वैशसम् ॥२६॥
26. bhūriśravasi śalye ca śālve caiva janārdana ,
āvantyeṣu ca vīreṣu naivāśāmyata vaiśasam.
26. bhūriśravasi śalye ca śālve ca eva janārdana
āvantyeṣu ca vīreṣu na eva aśāmyata vaiśasam
26. janārdana bhūriśravasi śalye ca śālve ca eva
āvantyeṣu vīreṣu ca vaiśasam na eva aśāmyata
26. O Janārdana, even when Bhūriśravas, Śalya, and indeed Śālva, as well as the Avantya heroes, were slain, the slaughter (vaiśasam) did not indeed subside.
जयद्रथे च निहते राक्षसे चाप्यलायुधे ।
बाह्लिके सोमदत्ते च नैवाशाम्यत वैशसम् ॥२७॥
27. jayadrathe ca nihate rākṣase cāpyalāyudhe ,
bāhlike somadatte ca naivāśāmyata vaiśasam.
27. jayadrathe ca nihate rākṣase ca api alāyudhe
bāhlīke somadatte ca na eva aśāmyata vaiśasam
27. jayadrathe nihate ca rākṣase alāyudhe ca api
bāhlīke somadatte ca vaiśasam na eva aśāmyata
27. Even after Jayadratha was killed, and likewise the demon Alayudha, along with Bahlika and Somadatta, the massacre certainly did not subside.
भगदत्ते हते शूरे काम्बोजे च सुदक्षिणे ।
दुःशासने च निहते नैवाशाम्यत वैशसम् ॥२८॥
28. bhagadatte hate śūre kāmboje ca sudakṣiṇe ,
duḥśāsane ca nihate naivāśāmyata vaiśasam.

duḥśāsane ca nihate na eva aśāmyata vaiśasam
28. bhagadatte śūre hate ca kāmboje sudakṣiṇe

28. Even after the heroic Bhagadatta was slain, and Sudakshina, the Kamboja king, and Dushasana were also killed, the massacre certainly did not subside.
दृष्ट्वा च निहताञ्शूरान्पृथङ्माण्डलिकान्नृपान् ।
बलिनश्च रणे कृष्ण नैवाशाम्यत वैशसम् ॥२९॥
29. dṛṣṭvā ca nihatāñśūrānpṛthaṅmāṇḍalikānnṛpān ,
balinaśca raṇe kṛṣṇa naivāśāmyata vaiśasam.
29. dṛṣṭvā ca nihatān śūrān pṛthak māṇḍalikān nṛpān
balinaḥ ca raṇe kṛṣṇa na eva aśāmyata vaiśasam
29. kṛṣṇa raṇe nihatān śūrān pṛthak māṇḍalikān nṛpān
balinaḥ ca dṛṣṭvā ca vaiśasam na eva aśāmyata
29. And even after seeing brave kings, various provincial rulers, and mighty warriors killed in battle, O Krishna, the massacre certainly did not subside.
अक्षौहिणीपतीन्दृष्ट्वा भीमसेनेन पातितान् ।
मोहाद्वा यदि वा लोभान्नैवाशाम्यत वैशसम् ॥३०॥
30. akṣauhiṇīpatīndṛṣṭvā bhīmasenena pātitān ,
mohādvā yadi vā lobhānnaivāśāmyata vaiśasam.
30. akṣauhiṇīpatīn dṛṣṭvā bhīmasenena pātitān mohāt
vā yadi vā lobhāt na eva aśāmyata vaiśasam

30. Even after seeing the commanders of akṣauhiṇīs (armies) brought down by Bhimasena, whether due to delusion or greed, the massacre certainly did not subside.
को नु राजकुले जातः कौरवेयो विशेषतः ।
निरर्थकं महद्वैरं कुर्यादन्यः सुयोधनात् ॥३१॥
31. ko nu rājakule jātaḥ kauraveyo viśeṣataḥ ,
nirarthakaṁ mahadvairaṁ kuryādanyaḥ suyodhanāt.
31. kaḥ nu rājakule jātaḥ kauraveyaḥ viśeṣataḥ
nirarthakam mahat vairam kuryāt anyaḥ suyodhanāt
31. suyodhanāt anyaḥ rājakule jātaḥ viśeṣataḥ

31. Who else, born into a royal family, especially one of the Kuru lineage, would create such great, meaningless hostility, other than Suyodhana?
गुणतोऽभ्यधिकं ज्ञात्वा बलतः शौर्यतोऽपि वा ।
अमूढः को नु युध्येत जानन्प्राज्ञो हिताहितम् ॥३२॥
32. guṇato'bhyadhikaṁ jñātvā balataḥ śauryato'pi vā ,
amūḍhaḥ ko nu yudhyeta jānanprājño hitāhitam.
32. guṇataḥ abhyadhikam jñātvā balataḥ śauryataḥ api
vā amūḍhaḥ kaḥ nu yudhyeta jānan prājñaḥ hitāhitam
32. amūḍhaḥ prājñaḥ kaḥ nu guṇataḥ balataḥ śauryataḥ
api vā abhyadhikam jñātvā hitāhitam jānan yudhyeta
32. Who, being a wise and undeluded person, would indeed fight after realizing (another person to be) superior in qualities, strength, or even valor, especially when knowing what is beneficial and what is harmful?
यन्न तस्य मनो ह्यासीत्त्वयोक्तस्य हितं वचः ।
प्रशमे पाण्डवैः सार्धं सोऽन्यस्य शृणुयात्कथम् ॥३३॥
33. yanna tasya mano hyāsīttvayoktasya hitaṁ vacaḥ ,
praśame pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdhaṁ so'nyasya śṛṇuyātkatham.
33. yat na tasya manaḥ hi āsīt tvayā uktasya hitam vacaḥ
praśame pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham saḥ anyasya śṛṇuyāt katham
33. yat tasya manaḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ sārdham praśame tvayā uktasya hitam vacaḥ hi na āsīt,
saḥ anyasya katham śṛṇuyāt
33. Since his mind was not indeed receptive to the beneficial words spoken by you concerning reconciliation with the Pāṇḍavas, how would he possibly listen to anyone else?
येन शांतनवो भीष्मो द्रोणो विदुर एव च ।
प्रत्याख्याताः शमस्यार्थे किं नु तस्याद्य भेषजम् ॥३४॥
34. yena śāṁtanavo bhīṣmo droṇo vidura eva ca ,
pratyākhyātāḥ śamasyārthe kiṁ nu tasyādya bheṣajam.
34. yena śāntanavaḥ bhīṣmaḥ droṇaḥ viduraḥ eva ca
pratyākhyātāḥ śamasya arthe kim nu tasya adya bheṣajam
34. yena śāntanavaḥ bhīṣmaḥ droṇaḥ viduraḥ eva ca śamasya arthe pratyākhyātāḥ,
tasya adya kim nu bheṣajam
34. Since he (Duryodhana) rejected Bhīṣma (the son of Śantanu), Droṇa, and even Vidura, all for the sake of peace, what indeed is the remedy for him today?
मौर्ख्याद्येन पिता वृद्धः प्रत्याख्यातो जनार्दन ।
तथा माता हितं वाक्यं भाषमाणा हितैषिणी ।
प्रत्याख्याता ह्यसत्कृत्य स कस्मै रोचयेद्वचः ॥३५॥
35. maurkhyādyena pitā vṛddhaḥ pratyākhyāto janārdana ,
tathā mātā hitaṁ vākyaṁ bhāṣamāṇā hitaiṣiṇī ,
pratyākhyātā hyasatkṛtya sa kasmai rocayedvacaḥ.
35. maurkhyāt yena pitā vṛddhaḥ pratyākhyātaḥ
janārdana tathā mātā hitam vākyam
bhāṣamāṇā hitaiṣiṇī pratyākhyātā
hi asatkṛtya saḥ kasmai rocayet vacaḥ

bhāṣamāṇā hitaiṣiṇī mātā hi asatkṛtya
pratyākhyātā saḥ kasmai vacaḥ rocayet
35. O Janardana, by whom an old father has been repudiated out of foolishness, and similarly, a well-wishing mother speaking beneficial words has been rejected after being disrespected - to whom will such a person's words be pleasing?
कुलान्तकरणो व्यक्तं जात एष जनार्दन ।
तथास्य दृश्यते चेष्टा नीतिश्चैव विशां पते ।
नैष दास्यति नो राज्यमिति मे मतिरच्युत ॥३६॥
36. kulāntakaraṇo vyaktaṁ jāta eṣa janārdana ,
tathāsya dṛśyate ceṣṭā nītiścaiva viśāṁ pate ,
naiṣa dāsyati no rājyamiti me matiracyuta.
36. kulāntakaraṇaḥ vyaktam jātaḥ eṣaḥ
janārdana tathā asya dṛśyate ceṣṭā
nītiḥ ca eva viśām pate na eṣaḥ
dāsyati naḥ rājyam iti me matiḥ acyuta
36. janārdana eṣaḥ vyaktam kulāntakaraṇaḥ
jātaḥ tathā ca viśām pate asya
ceṣṭā nītiḥ ca eva dṛśyate acyuta eṣaḥ
na naḥ rājyam dāsyati iti me matiḥ
36. O Janardana, this one is clearly born to destroy the family. O Lord of people, his conduct and policy are seen to be such. This is my opinion (mati), O Acyuta, that he will not give us the kingdom.
उक्तोऽहं बहुशस्तात विदुरेण महात्मना ।
न जीवन्दास्यते भागं धार्तराष्ट्रः कथंचन ॥३७॥
37. ukto'haṁ bahuśastāta vidureṇa mahātmanā ,
na jīvandāsyate bhāgaṁ dhārtarāṣṭraḥ kathaṁcana.
37. uktaḥ aham bahuśaḥ tāta vidureṇa mahātmanā na
jīvan dāsyate bhāgam dhārtarāṣṭraḥ kathaṃcana
37. tāta aham mahātmanā vidureṇa bahuśaḥ uktaḥ [yad]
dhārtarāṣṭraḥ jīvan kathaṃcana bhāgam na dāsyate
37. My dear (tāta), the great-souled (mahātman) Vidura has told me many times: 'Dhritarashtra's son (Duryodhana) will not give (us) any share by any means as long as he lives.'
यावत्प्राणा धमिष्यन्ति धार्तराष्ट्रस्य मानद ।
तावद्युष्मास्वपापेषु प्रचरिष्यति पातकम् ॥३८॥
38. yāvatprāṇā dhamiṣyanti dhārtarāṣṭrasya mānada ,
tāvadyuṣmāsvapāpeṣu pracariṣyati pātakam.
38. yāvat prāṇāḥ dhamiṣyanti dhārtarāṣṭrasya mānada
tāvat yuṣmāsu apāpeṣu pracariṣyati pātakam
38. mānada yāvat dhārtarāṣṭrasya prāṇāḥ dhamiṣyanti
tāvat apāpeṣu yuṣmāsu pātakam pracariṣyati
38. O giver of honor (mānada), as long as life (prāṇa) remains in Dhritarashtra's son, misfortune will continue to prevail among you, even though you are faultless.
न स युक्तोऽन्यथा जेतुमृते युद्धेन माधव ।
इत्यब्रवीत्सदा मां हि विदुरः सत्यदर्शनः ॥३९॥
39. na sa yukto'nyathā jetumṛte yuddhena mādhava ,
ityabravītsadā māṁ hi viduraḥ satyadarśanaḥ.
39. na saḥ yuktaḥ anyathā jetum ṛte yuddhena mādhava
iti abravīt sadā mām hi viduraḥ satyadarśanaḥ
39. mādhava saḥ anyathā yuddhena ṛte jetum na yuktaḥ
iti satyadarśanaḥ viduraḥ mām hi sadā abravīt
39. O Madhava, he is not capable of conquering in any other way except through battle. Vidura, who possesses true vision, always told me this.
तत्सर्वमद्य जानामि व्यवसायं दुरात्मनः ।
यदुक्तं वचनं तेन विदुरेण महात्मना ॥४०॥
40. tatsarvamadya jānāmi vyavasāyaṁ durātmanaḥ ,
yaduktaṁ vacanaṁ tena vidureṇa mahātmanā.
40. tat sarvam adya jānāmi vyavasāyam durātmanaḥ
yat uktam vacanam tena vidureṇa mahātmanā
40. adya tat sarvam durātmanaḥ vyavasāyam jānāmi
yat vacanam tena mahātmanā vidureṇa uktam
40. Today I understand the entire scheme of that wicked person, a scheme about which the great-souled (mahātman) Vidura had spoken.
यो हि श्रुत्वा वचः पथ्यं जामदग्न्याद्यथातथम् ।
अवामन्यत दुर्बुद्धिर्ध्रुवं नाशमुखे स्थितः ॥४१॥
41. yo hi śrutvā vacaḥ pathyaṁ jāmadagnyādyathātatham ,
avāmanyata durbuddhirdhruvaṁ nāśamukhe sthitaḥ.
41. yaḥ hi śrutvā vacaḥ pathyam jāmadagnyāt yathātatham
avāmanyata durbuddhiḥ dhruvam nāśamukhe sthitaḥ
41. yaḥ durbuddhiḥ hi jāmadagnyāt yathātatham pathyam
vacaḥ śrutvā avāmanyata saḥ dhruvam nāśamukhe sthitaḥ
41. He who, being foolish, indeed disregarded the beneficial advice he heard truthfully from Jamadagni's son (Parashurama), is surely poised on the brink of ruin.
उक्तं हि बहुभिः सिद्धैर्जातमात्रे सुयोधने ।
एनं प्राप्य दुरात्मानं क्षयं क्षत्रं गमिष्यति ॥४२॥
42. uktaṁ hi bahubhiḥ siddhairjātamātre suyodhane ,
enaṁ prāpya durātmānaṁ kṣayaṁ kṣatraṁ gamiṣyati.
42. uktam hi bahubhiḥ siddhaiḥ jātamātre suyodhane
enam prāpya durātmānam kṣayam kṣatram gamiṣyati
42. hi jātamātre suyodhane bahubhiḥ siddhaiḥ uktam (yat)
enam durātmānam prāpya kṣatram kṣayam gamiṣyati
42. Indeed, as soon as Suyodhana (Duryodhana) was born, it was declared by many perfected beings (siddhas) that, on account of this wicked person, the kṣatriya class would face destruction.
तदिदं वचनं तेषां निरुक्तं वै जनार्दन ।
क्षयं याता हि राजानो दुर्योधनकृते भृशम् ॥४३॥
43. tadidaṁ vacanaṁ teṣāṁ niruktaṁ vai janārdana ,
kṣayaṁ yātā hi rājāno duryodhanakṛte bhṛśam.
43. tat idam vacanam teṣām niruktam vai janārdana
kṣayam yātāḥ hi rājānaḥ duryodhanakṛte bhṛśam
43. janārdana tat idam teṣām vacanam vai niruktam
hi rājānaḥ duryodhanakṛte bhṛśam kṣayam yātāḥ
43. O Janardana, this statement was indeed declared by them: 'The kings have certainly met great ruin because of Duryodhana.'
सोऽद्य सर्वान्रणे योधान्निहनिष्यामि माधव ।
क्षत्रियेषु हतेष्वाशु शून्ये च शिबिरे कृते ॥४४॥
44. so'dya sarvānraṇe yodhānnihaniṣyāmi mādhava ,
kṣatriyeṣu hateṣvāśu śūnye ca śibire kṛte.
44. saḥ adya sarvān raṇe yodhān nihaniṣyāmi mādhava
kṣatriyeṣu hateṣu āśu śūnye ca śibire kṛte
44. mādhava saḥ adya raṇe sarvān yodhān nihaniṣyāmi
ca kṣatriyeṣu āśu hateṣu śibire śūnye kṛte
44. O Madhava, today I will slay all the warriors in battle. When the kṣatriyas have been quickly killed and the camp is rendered desolate...
वधाय चात्मनोऽस्माभिः संयुगं रोचयिष्यति ।
तदन्तं हि भवेद्वैरमनुमानेन माधव ॥४५॥
45. vadhāya cātmano'smābhiḥ saṁyugaṁ rocayiṣyati ,
tadantaṁ hi bhavedvairamanumānena mādhava.
45. vadhāya ca ātmanaḥ asmābhiḥ saṃyugam rocayiṣyati
tat antam hi bhavet vairam anumānena mādhava
45. ca asmābhiḥ ātmanaḥ vadhāya saṃyugam rocayiṣyati
mādhava anumānena tat vairam hi antam bhavet
45. And he will indeed prefer battle for his own destruction at our hands. O Madhava, by inference, that enmity (vaira) will truly come to an end.
एवं पश्यामि वार्ष्णेय चिन्तयन्प्रज्ञया स्वया ।
विदुरस्य च वाक्येन चेष्टया च दुरात्मनः ॥४६॥
46. evaṁ paśyāmi vārṣṇeya cintayanprajñayā svayā ,
vidurasya ca vākyena ceṣṭayā ca durātmanaḥ.
46. evam paśyāmi vārṣṇeya cintayan prajñayā svayā
vidurasya ca vākyena ceṣṭayā ca durātmanaḥ
46. vārṣṇeya aham evam svayā prajñayā cintayan
paśyāmi ca vidurasya vākyena ca durātmanaḥ ceṣṭayā
46. O Vārṣṇeya, I thus perceive, pondering with my own intellect (prajñā), and also through the words of Vidura and the actions of that wicked person (durātman).
संयाहि भारतीं वीर यावद्धन्मि शितैः शरैः ।
दुर्योधनं दुरात्मानं वाहिनीं चास्य संयुगे ॥४७॥
47. saṁyāhi bhāratīṁ vīra yāvaddhanmi śitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
duryodhanaṁ durātmānaṁ vāhinīṁ cāsya saṁyuge.
47. saṃyāhi bhāratīm vīra yāvat hanmi śitaiḥ śaraiḥ
duryodhanaṃ durātmānam vāhinīm ca asya saṃyuge
47. vīra saṃyāhi bhāratīm yāvat śitaiḥ śaraiḥ durātmānam
duryodhanaṃ ca asya vāhinīm saṃyuge hanmi
47. O hero, advance to the battle (bhāratīm) while I slay the evil-minded Duryodhana and his army in combat with my sharp arrows.
क्षेममद्य करिष्यामि धर्मराजस्य माधव ।
हत्वैतद्दुर्बलं सैन्यं धार्तराष्ट्रस्य पश्यतः ॥४८॥
48. kṣemamadya kariṣyāmi dharmarājasya mādhava ,
hatvaitaddurbalaṁ sainyaṁ dhārtarāṣṭrasya paśyataḥ.
48. kṣemam adya kariṣyāmi dharmarājasya mādhava hatvā
etat durbalam sainyam dhārtarāṣṭrasya paśyataḥ
48. mādhava adya dharmarājasya kṣemam kariṣyāmi
dhārtarāṣṭrasya paśyataḥ etat durbalam sainyam hatvā
48. O Madhava, today I will secure the well-being (kṣemam) of Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira), having destroyed this weak army while Dhritarashtra's son (Duryodhana) watches.
संजय उवाच ।
अभीशुहस्तो दाशार्हस्तथोक्तः सव्यसाचिना ।
तद्बलौघममित्राणामभीतः प्राविशद्रणे ॥४९॥
49. saṁjaya uvāca ,
abhīśuhasto dāśārhastathoktaḥ savyasācinā ,
tadbalaughamamitrāṇāmabhītaḥ prāviśadraṇe.

savyasācinā tat balaugham amitrāṇām abhītaḥ prāviśat raṇe

49. Sanjaya said: Thus addressed by Savyasacin (Arjuna), Daśārha's descendant (Krishna), with the reins in his hand, fearlessly entered that mass of enemy forces in the battle.
शरासनवरं घोरं शक्तिकण्टकसंवृतम् ।
गदापरिघपन्थानं रथनागमहाद्रुमम् ॥५०॥
50. śarāsanavaraṁ ghoraṁ śaktikaṇṭakasaṁvṛtam ,
gadāparighapanthānaṁ rathanāgamahādrumam.

50. (He entered the enemy host, which was) dreadful, outstanding with bows, covered with thorny spears, with maces and iron clubs forming its pathways, and chariots and elephants standing like great trees.
हयपत्तिलताकीर्णं गाहमानो महायशाः ।
व्यचरत्तत्र गोविन्दो रथेनातिपताकिना ॥५१॥
51. hayapattilatākīrṇaṁ gāhamāno mahāyaśāḥ ,
vyacarattatra govindo rathenātipatākinā.

51. The greatly renowned Govinda (Krishna), entering that area crowded with multitudes of horses and foot soldiers, moved about there with his chariot, which was adorned with many banners.
ते हयाः पाण्डुरा राजन्वहन्तोऽर्जुनमाहवे ।
दिक्षु सर्वास्वदृश्यन्त दाशार्हेण प्रचोदिताः ॥५२॥
52. te hayāḥ pāṇḍurā rājanvahanto'rjunamāhave ,
dikṣu sarvāsvadṛśyanta dāśārheṇa pracoditāḥ.
52. te hayāḥ pāṇḍurā rājan vahantaḥ arjunam āhave
dikṣu sarvāsu adṛśyanta dāśārheṇa pracoditāḥ
52. rājan,
dāśārheṇa pracoditāḥ te pāṇḍurāḥ hayāḥ āhave arjunam vahantaḥ sarvāsu dikṣu adṛśyanta
52. O king, those pale horses, carrying Arjuna in the battle, were seen in all directions, impelled by the Dāśārha (Krishna).
ततः प्रायाद्रथेनाजौ सव्यसाची परंतपः ।
किरञ्शरशतांस्तीक्ष्णान्वारिधारा इवाम्बुदः ॥५३॥
53. tataḥ prāyādrathenājau savyasācī paraṁtapaḥ ,
kirañśaraśatāṁstīkṣṇānvāridhārā ivāmbudaḥ.
53. tataḥ prāyāt rathena ājau savyasācī paraṃtapaḥ
kiran śaraśatān tīkṣṇān vāridhārāḥ iva ambudaḥ
53. tataḥ paraṃtapaḥ savyasācī ājau rathena prāyāt,
ambudaḥ vāridhārāḥ iva tīkṣṇān śaraśatān kiran
53. Then, the tormentor of foes, Savyasācin (Arjuna), advanced in battle with his chariot, showering hundreds of sharp arrows just as a cloud pours forth streams of water.
प्रादुरासीन्महाञ्शब्दः शराणां नतपर्वणाम् ।
इषुभिश्छाद्यमानानां समरे सव्यसाचिना ॥५४॥
54. prādurāsīnmahāñśabdaḥ śarāṇāṁ nataparvaṇām ,
iṣubhiśchādyamānānāṁ samare savyasācinā.

54. A tremendous sound arose from the arrows, which had bent joints, and from those (enemies) who were being covered by the arrows of Savyasācin (Arjuna) in battle.
असज्जन्तस्तनुत्रेषु शरौघाः प्रापतन्भुवि ।
इन्द्राशनिसमस्पर्शा गाण्डीवप्रेषिताः शराः ॥५५॥
55. asajjantastanutreṣu śaraughāḥ prāpatanbhuvi ,
indrāśanisamasparśā gāṇḍīvapreṣitāḥ śarāḥ.
55. asajjantaḥ tanutreṣu śara oghāḥ prāpatan bhuvi
indra aśani sama sparśāḥ gāṇḍīva preṣitāḥ śarāḥ
55. gāṇḍīvapreṣitāḥ indra aśani sama sparśāḥ śarāḥ
tanutreṣu asajjantaḥ śara oghāḥ bhuvi prāpatan
55. The arrows, launched from the Gaṇḍīva bow, whose impact was like Indra's thunderbolt, did not get stuck in armors but fell to the ground in torrents.
नरान्नागान्समाहत्य हयांश्चापि विशां पते ।
अपतन्त रणे बाणाः पतंगा इव घोषिणः ॥५६॥
56. narānnāgānsamāhatya hayāṁścāpi viśāṁ pate ,
apatanta raṇe bāṇāḥ pataṁgā iva ghoṣiṇaḥ.

apatanta raṇe bāṇāḥ pataṅgāḥ iva ghoṣiṇaḥ
56. viśām pate,

56. O Lord of the people (viśāṃ pate), the arrows, which hissed and resembled moths or grasshoppers, struck men, elephants, and also horses, before falling down on the battlefield.
आसीत्सर्वमवच्छन्नं गाण्डीवप्रेषितैः शरैः ।
न प्राज्ञायन्त समरे दिशो वा प्रदिशोऽपि वा ॥५७॥
57. āsītsarvamavacchannaṁ gāṇḍīvapreṣitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
na prājñāyanta samare diśo vā pradiśo'pi vā.
57. āsīt sarvam avacchannam gāṇḍīvapreṣitaiḥ śaraiḥ
na prājñāyanta samare diśaḥ vā pradiśaḥ api vā
57. gāṇḍīvapreṣitaiḥ śaraiḥ sarvam avacchannam āsīt.

57. The entire battlefield was covered by the arrows launched from the Gaṇḍīva bow. In the battle, neither the main directions nor the intermediate directions could be distinguished.
सर्वमासीज्जगत्पूर्णं पार्थनामाङ्कितैः शरैः ।
रुक्मपुङ्खैस्तैलधौतैः कर्मारपरिमार्जितैः ॥५८॥
58. sarvamāsījjagatpūrṇaṁ pārthanāmāṅkitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
rukmapuṅkhaistailadhautaiḥ karmāraparimārjitaiḥ.

58. The entire world (jagat) was filled with arrows that bore the name of Pārtha (Arjuna), possessing golden shafts, cleaned with oil, and meticulously polished by skilled smiths.
ते दह्यमानाः पार्थेन पावकेनेव कुञ्जराः ।
समासीदन्त कौरव्या वध्यमानाः शितैः शरैः ॥५९॥
59. te dahyamānāḥ pārthena pāvakeneva kuñjarāḥ ,
samāsīdanta kauravyā vadhyamānāḥ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ.

59. Being scorched by Partha (Arjuna) as if by fire, those Kauravas, like elephants, were assailed, being struck down by sharp arrows.
शरचापधरः पार्थः प्रज्वलन्निव भारत ।
ददाह समरे योधान्कक्षमग्निरिव ज्वलन् ॥६०॥
60. śaracāpadharaḥ pārthaḥ prajvalanniva bhārata ,
dadāha samare yodhānkakṣamagniriva jvalan.

60. O Bhārata, Partha (Arjuna), bearing his bow and arrows, blazing as if he were fire, consumed the warriors in battle, just as a blazing fire burns up dry grass.
यथा वनान्ते वनपैर्विसृष्टः कक्षं दहेत्कृष्णगतिः सघोषः ।
भूरिद्रुमं शुष्कलतावितानं भृशं समृद्धो ज्वलनः प्रतापी ॥६१॥
61. yathā vanānte vanapairvisṛṣṭaḥ; kakṣaṁ dahetkṛṣṇagatiḥ saghoṣaḥ ,
bhūridrumaṁ śuṣkalatāvitānaṁ; bhṛśaṁ samṛddho jvalanaḥ pratāpī.

kakṣam dahet kṛṣṇagatiḥ saghoṣaḥ
bhūridrumam śuṣkalatāvitānam

saghoṣaḥ kṛṣṇagatiḥ bhūridrumam
śuṣkalatāvitānam kakṣam dahet
61. Just as a greatly thriving and powerful fire, released by forest dwellers at the edge of a forest, roaring and leaving a dark trail of smoke, would consume a dry forest abundant with trees and an expanse of dry creepers.
एवं स नाराचगणप्रतापी शरार्चिरुच्चावचतिग्मतेजाः ।
ददाह सर्वां तव पुत्रसेनाममृष्यमाणस्तरसा तरस्वी ॥६२॥
62. evaṁ sa nārācagaṇapratāpī; śarārciruccāvacatigmatejāḥ ,
dadāha sarvāṁ tava putrasenā;mamṛṣyamāṇastarasā tarasvī.
62. evam saḥ nārācagaṇapratāpī śarārciḥ uccāvacatigmatejāḥ
dadāha sarvām tava putrasenām amṛṣyamāṇaḥ tarasā tarasvī
62. evam saḥ nārācagaṇapratāpī śarārciḥ uccāvacatigmatejāḥ
tarasvī amṛṣyamāṇaḥ tarasā tava sarvām putrasenām dadāha
62. Thus he (Arjuna), mighty with his multitude of arrows, whose arrows were like flames, and who possessed diverse, fierce energy, consumed your entire son's army with great force, unable to tolerate them.
तस्येषवः प्राणहराः सुमुक्ता नासज्जन्वै वर्मसु रुक्मपुङ्खाः ।
न च द्वितीयं प्रमुमोच बाणं नरे हये वा परमद्विपे वा ॥६३॥
63. tasyeṣavaḥ prāṇaharāḥ sumuktā; nāsajjanvai varmasu rukmapuṅkhāḥ ,
na ca dvitīyaṁ pramumoca bāṇaṁ; nare haye vā paramadvipe vā.
63. tasya iṣavaḥ prāṇaharāḥ sumuktāḥ
na asajjan vai varmasu rukmapuṅkhāḥ
na ca dvitīyam pramumoca
bāṇam nare haye vā paramadvipe vā
63. tasya prāṇaharāḥ sumuktāḥ rukmapuṅkhāḥ iṣavaḥ varmasu vai na asajjan.
na ca nare haye vā paramadvipe vā dvitīyam bāṇam pramumoca.
63. His life-taking, well-shot arrows, feathered with gold, did not stick in the armor. Indeed, he did not need to release a second arrow at a man, a horse, or a mighty elephant.
अनेकरूपाकृतिभिर्हि बाणैर्महारथानीकमनुप्रविश्य ।
स एव एकस्तव पुत्रसेनां जघान दैत्यानिव वज्रपाणिः ॥६४॥
64. anekarūpākṛtibhirhi bāṇai;rmahārathānīkamanupraviśya ,
sa eva ekastava putrasenāṁ; jaghāna daityāniva vajrapāṇiḥ.
64. anekarūpākṛtibhiḥ hi bāṇaiḥ mahārathānīkam anuprāviśya saḥ
eva ekaḥ tava putrasenām jaghāna daityān iva vajrapāṇiḥ
64. hi anekarūpākṛtibhiḥ bāṇaiḥ mahārathānīkam anuprāviśya saḥ ekaḥ eva vajrapāṇiḥ daityān iva tava putrasenām jaghāna.
64. Indeed, penetrating the army of great charioteers with arrows of many forms and shapes, he alone destroyed your son's army, just as Vajrapāṇi (Indra) destroyed the demons.
