हैडिम्बं निहतं दृष्ट्वा विकीर्णमिव पर्वतम् ।
पाण्डवा दीनमनसः सर्वे बाष्पाकुलेक्षणाः ॥१॥
1. saṁjaya uvāca ,
haiḍimbaṁ nihataṁ dṛṣṭvā vikīrṇamiva parvatam ,
pāṇḍavā dīnamanasaḥ sarve bāṣpākulekṣaṇāḥ.

1. Sañjaya said: When they saw Hidiṃba's son (Ghaṭotkaca) killed and scattered like a mountain, all the Pāṇḍavas became dispirited, their eyes full of tears.
वासुदेवस्तु हर्षेण महताभिपरिप्लुतः ।
ननाद सिंहवन्नादं व्यथयन्निव भारत ।
विनद्य च महानादं पर्यष्वजत फल्गुनम् ॥२॥
2. vāsudevastu harṣeṇa mahatābhipariplutaḥ ,
nanāda siṁhavannādaṁ vyathayanniva bhārata ,
vinadya ca mahānādaṁ paryaṣvajata phalgunam.
2. vāsudevaḥ tu harṣeṇa mahatā
abhipariplutaḥ nanāda siṃhavat nādam
vyathayan iva bhārata vinadya ca
mahānādam paryasvajata phālgunam
2. bhārata,
mahatā harṣeṇa abhipariplutaḥ vāsudevaḥ tu siṃhavat nādam nanāda,
iva vyathayan.
ca mahānādam vinadya phālgunam paryasvajata.
2. O Bhārata, Vāsudeva (Krishna), overwhelmed with great joy, roared a lion-like roar, as if terrifying [all]. And having uttered a mighty roar, he embraced Phālguna (Arjuna).
स विनद्य महानादमभीशून्संनियम्य च ।
ननर्त हर्षसंवीतो वातोद्धूत इव द्रुमः ॥३॥
3. sa vinadya mahānādamabhīśūnsaṁniyamya ca ,
nanarta harṣasaṁvīto vātoddhūta iva drumaḥ.
3. saḥ vinadya mahānādam abhīśūn saṃniyamya ca
nanarta harṣasaṃvītaḥ vāta uddhūtaḥ iva drumaḥ
3. saḥ mahānādam vinadya ca abhīśūn saṃniyamya,
harṣasaṃvītaḥ,
vāta uddhūtaḥ drumaḥ iva nanarta.
3. Having uttered that mighty roar and having restrained the reins, he (Krishna), filled with joy, danced like a tree shaken by the wind.
ततो विनिर्भ्राम्य पुनः पार्थमास्फोट्य चासकृत् ।
रथोपस्थगतो भीमं प्राणदत्पुनरच्युतः ॥४॥
4. tato vinirbhrāmya punaḥ pārthamāsphoṭya cāsakṛt ,
rathopasthagato bhīmaṁ prāṇadatpunaracyutaḥ.
4. tataḥ vinirbhrāmya punaḥ pārtham āsphoṭya ca asakṛt
rathopasthagataḥ bhīmam prāṇadat punaḥ acyutaḥ
4. tataḥ acyutaḥ punaḥ pārtham vinirbhrāmya ca asakṛt āsphoṭya,
rathopasthagataḥ,
punaḥ bhīmam prāṇadat.
4. Then, Acyuta (Krishna), having repeatedly spun around and clapped his hands in triumph, being seated in the chariot, again loudly cheered Bhīma.
प्रहृष्टमनसं ज्ञात्वा वासुदेवं महाबलम् ।
अब्रवीदर्जुनो राजन्नातिहृष्टमना इव ॥५॥
5. prahṛṣṭamanasaṁ jñātvā vāsudevaṁ mahābalam ,
abravīdarjuno rājannātihṛṣṭamanā iva.
5. prahr̥ṣṭamanasam jñātvā vāsudevam mahābalam
abravīt arjunaḥ rājan na atihr̥ṣṭamanāḥ iva
5. rājan,
prahr̥ṣṭamanasam mahābalam vāsudevam jñātvā,
arjunaḥ na atihr̥ṣṭamanāḥ iva abravīt.
5. O King, Arjuna spoke, having perceived Vāsudeva (Krishna), who was of great strength and whose mind was exceedingly joyous, [but Arjuna himself spoke] as if he were not excessively joyful in mind.
अतिहर्षोऽयमस्थाने तवाद्य मधुसूदन ।
शोकस्थाने परे प्राप्ते हैडिम्बस्य वधेन वै ॥६॥
6. atiharṣo'yamasthāne tavādya madhusūdana ,
śokasthāne pare prāpte haiḍimbasya vadhena vai.
6. atiharṣaḥ ayam asthāne tava adya madhusūdana
śokasthane pare prāpte haiḍimbasya vadhena vai
6. madhusūdana tava ayam atiharṣaḥ adya asthāne
haiḍimbasya vadhena vai pare śokasthane prāpte
6. O Madhusūdana, this excessive joy of yours today is inappropriate, for a great cause for sorrow has indeed arrived with the slaying of Hidimba's son.
विमुखानि च सैन्यानि हतं दृष्ट्वा घटोत्कचम् ।
वयं च भृशमाविग्ना हैडिम्बस्य निपातनात् ॥७॥
7. vimukhāni ca sainyāni hataṁ dṛṣṭvā ghaṭotkacam ,
vayaṁ ca bhṛśamāvignā haiḍimbasya nipātanāt.
7. vimukhāni ca sainyāni hatam dṛṣṭvā ghaṭotkacam
vayam ca bhṛśam āvignāḥ haiḍimbasya nipātanāt
7. ghaṭotkacam hatam dṛṣṭvā sainyāni ca vimukhāni
vayam ca haiḍimbasya nipātanāt bhṛśam āvignāḥ
7. And our armies are disheartened, having seen Ghaṭotkaca slain, and we ourselves are greatly agitated by the fall of Hidimba's son.
नैतत्कारणमल्पं हि भविष्यति जनार्दन ।
तदद्य शंस मे पृष्टः सत्यं सत्यवतां वर ॥८॥
8. naitatkāraṇamalpaṁ hi bhaviṣyati janārdana ,
tadadya śaṁsa me pṛṣṭaḥ satyaṁ satyavatāṁ vara.
8. na etat kāraṇam alpam hi bhaviṣyati janārdana
tat adya śaṃsa me pṛṣṭaḥ satyam satyavatām vara
8. janārdana etat kāraṇam alpam na hi bhaviṣyati
tat satyavatām vara adya me pṛṣṭaḥ satyam śaṃsa
8. This cause will certainly not be a small one, O Janārdana. Therefore, being asked by me, declare the truth today, O best among truth-tellers.
यद्येतन्न रहस्यं ते वक्तुमर्हस्यरिंदम ।
धैर्यस्य वैकृतं ब्रूहि त्वमद्य मधुसूदन ॥९॥
9. yadyetanna rahasyaṁ te vaktumarhasyariṁdama ,
dhairyasya vaikṛtaṁ brūhi tvamadya madhusūdana.
9. yadi etat na rahasyam te vaktum arhasi ariṃdama
dhairyasya vaikṛtam brūhi tvam adya madhusūdana
9. ariṃdama yadi etat te rahasyam na (asti) vaktum arhasi
madhusūdana tvam adya dhairyasya vaikṛtam brūhi
9. If this is not a secret to you, O destroyer of foes, you ought to tell it. O Madhusūdana, speak today about the distortion of your fortitude.
समुद्रस्येव संक्षोभो मेरोरिव विसर्पणम् ।
तथैतल्लाघवं मन्ये तव कर्म जनार्दन ॥१०॥
10. samudrasyeva saṁkṣobho meroriva visarpaṇam ,
tathaitallāghavaṁ manye tava karma janārdana.
10. samundrasya iva saṃkṣobhaḥ meroḥ iva visarpaṇam
tathā etat lāghavam manye tava karma janārdana
10. janārdana! samundrasya iva saṃkṣobhaḥ,
meroḥ iva visarpaṇam,
tathā etat tava karma lāghavam (iti) manye.
10. O Janārdana, I consider this action (karma) of yours, performed with such ease, to be like the agitation of the ocean or the shifting of Mount Meru.
वासुदेव उवाच ।
अतिहर्षमिमं प्राप्तं शृणु मे त्वं धनंजय ।
अतीव मनसः सद्यः प्रसादकरमुत्तमम् ॥११॥
11. vāsudeva uvāca ,
atiharṣamimaṁ prāptaṁ śṛṇu me tvaṁ dhanaṁjaya ,
atīva manasaḥ sadyaḥ prasādakaramuttamam.
11. vāsudeva uvāca atiharṣam imam prāptam śṛṇu me tvam
dhanañjaya atīva manasaḥ sadyaḥ prasādakaram uttamam
11. vāsudeva uvāca dhanañjaya! tvam me imam atiharṣam prāptam śṛṇu,
(idam) atīva manasaḥ sadyaḥ prasādakaram uttamam (asti).
11. Vāsudeva said: O Dhanañjaya, listen to me concerning this exceedingly joyful and excellent news that has been obtained, which instantly brings great delight to the mind.
शक्तिं घटोत्कचेनेमां व्यंसयित्वा महाद्युते ।
कर्णं निहतमेवाजौ विद्धि सद्यो धनंजय ॥१२॥
12. śaktiṁ ghaṭotkacenemāṁ vyaṁsayitvā mahādyute ,
karṇaṁ nihatamevājau viddhi sadyo dhanaṁjaya.
12. śaktim ghaṭotkacena imām vyaṃsayitvā mahādyute
karṇam nihatam eva ājau viddhi sadyaḥ dhanañjaya
12. dhanañjaya! mahādyute! ghaṭotkacena imām śaktim vyaṃsayitvā,
karṇam ājau sadyaḥ nihatam eva viddhi.
12. O Dhanañjaya, O greatly radiant one! Know that now, with this divine weapon (śakti) having been expended by Ghaṭotkaca, Karṇa is as good as slain in battle immediately.
शक्तिहस्तं पुनः कर्णं को लोकेऽस्ति पुमानिह ।
य एनमभितस्तिष्ठेत्कार्त्तिकेयमिवाहवे ॥१३॥
13. śaktihastaṁ punaḥ karṇaṁ ko loke'sti pumāniha ,
ya enamabhitastiṣṭhetkārttikeyamivāhave.
13. śaktihastam punaḥ karṇam kaḥ loke asti pumān iha
yaḥ enam abhitaḥ tiṣṭhet kārttikeyam iva āhave
13. punaḥ,
śaktihastam karṇam,
(yathā) kārttikeyam iva,
āhave,
yaḥ enam abhitaḥ tiṣṭhet,
iha loke kaḥ pumān asti?
13. But if Karṇa were still to wield the divine weapon (śakti), what man in this world could stand against him in battle, just as one would stand against Kārttikeya?
दिष्ट्यापनीतकवचो दिष्ट्यापहृतकुण्डलः ।
दिष्ट्या च व्यंसिता शक्तिरमोघास्य घटोत्कचे ॥१४॥
14. diṣṭyāpanītakavaco diṣṭyāpahṛtakuṇḍalaḥ ,
diṣṭyā ca vyaṁsitā śaktiramoghāsya ghaṭotkace.
14. diṣṭyā apanītakavacaḥ diṣṭyā apahṛtakuṇḍalaḥ
diṣṭyā ca vyaṃsitā śaktiḥ amoghā asya ghaṭotkace
14. diṣṭyā asya apanītakavacaḥ diṣṭyā apahṛtakuṇḍalaḥ
ca diṣṭyā amoghā śaktiḥ ghaṭotkace vyaṃsitā
14. Fortunately, his armor was removed; fortunately, his earrings were taken; and fortunately, his unfailing divine power (śakti) was expended on Ghaṭotkaca.
यदि हि स्यात्सकवचस्तथैव च सकुण्डलः ।
सामरानपि लोकांस्त्रीनेकः कर्णो जयेद्बली ॥१५॥
15. yadi hi syātsakavacastathaiva ca sakuṇḍalaḥ ,
sāmarānapi lokāṁstrīnekaḥ karṇo jayedbalī.
15. yadi hi syāt sakavacaḥ tathā eva ca sakuṇḍalaḥ
sāmarān api lokān trīn ekaḥ karṇaḥ jayet balī
15. yadi hi sakavacaḥ ca tathā eva sakuṇḍalaḥ syāt,
balī ekaḥ karṇaḥ sāmarān api trīn lokān jayet
15. If indeed he (Karna) were with his armor and also with his earrings, then that powerful Karna alone would conquer the three worlds, even together with their gods.
वासवो वा कुबेरो वा वरुणो वा जलेश्वरः ।
यमो वा नोत्सहेत्कर्णं रणे प्रतिसमासितुम् ॥१६॥
16. vāsavo vā kubero vā varuṇo vā jaleśvaraḥ ,
yamo vā notsahetkarṇaṁ raṇe pratisamāsitum.
16. vāsavaḥ vā kuberaḥ vā varuṇaḥ vā jaleśvaraḥ
yamaḥ vā na utsahet karṇaṃ raṇe pratisamāsitum
16. vāsavaḥ vā kuberaḥ vā varuṇaḥ जलेश्वरः वा yamaḥ vā,
raṇe karṇaṃ pratisamāsitum na utsahet
16. Neither Indra (Vāsava), nor Kubera, nor Varuna, the lord of waters, nor even Yama would dare to stand against Karna in battle.
गाण्डीवमायम्य भवांश्चक्रं वाहं सुदर्शनम् ।
न शक्तौ स्वो रणे जेतुं तथायुक्तं नरर्षभम् ॥१७॥
17. gāṇḍīvamāyamya bhavāṁścakraṁ vāhaṁ sudarśanam ,
na śaktau svo raṇe jetuṁ tathāyuktaṁ nararṣabham.
17. gāṇḍīvaṃ āyamya bhavān ca cakraṃ vāhaṃ sudarśanam
na śaktau svaḥ raṇe jetuṃ tathāyuktam nararṣabham
17. aham gāṇḍīvaṃ āyamya,
bhavān ca sudarśanam cakraṃ vāhaṃ [dhārayan api],
raṇe tathāyuktam nararṣabham jetuṃ na śaktau svaḥ
17. Even after I have drawn my Gaṇḍīva bow, and you are wielding your Sudarśana discus, we two would not be able to conquer that best among men (Karna), who is thus empowered, in battle.
त्वद्धितार्थं तु शक्रेण मायया हृतकुण्डलः ।
विहीनकवचश्चायं कृतः परपुरंजयः ॥१८॥
18. tvaddhitārthaṁ tu śakreṇa māyayā hṛtakuṇḍalaḥ ,
vihīnakavacaścāyaṁ kṛtaḥ parapuraṁjayaḥ.
18. tvat-hita-artham tu śakreṇa māyayā hṛtakuṇḍalaḥ
vihīnakavacaḥ ca ayam kṛtaḥ parapurañjayaḥ
18. ayam parapurañjayaḥ tvat-hita-artham tu śakreṇa
māyayā hṛtakuṇḍalaḥ vihīnakavacaḥ ca kṛtaḥ
18. Indeed, for your welfare, this conqueror of enemy cities was, by Indra, through trickery (māyā), deprived of his armor and had his earrings taken.
उत्कृत्य कवचं यस्मात्कुण्डले विमले च ते ।
प्रादाच्छक्राय कर्णो वै तेन वैकर्तनः स्मृतः ॥१९॥
19. utkṛtya kavacaṁ yasmātkuṇḍale vimale ca te ,
prādācchakrāya karṇo vai tena vaikartanaḥ smṛtaḥ.
19. utkṛtya kavacam yasmāt kuṇḍale vimale ca te
prādāt śakrāya karṇaḥ vai tena vaikartanaḥ smṛtaḥ
19. yasmāt karṇaḥ kavacam ca te vimale kuṇḍale utkṛtya śakrāya vai prādāt,
tena vaikartanaḥ smṛtaḥ
19. Because Karna, having cut off his armor and those two immaculate earrings, indeed gave them to Indra, he is therefore remembered as Vaikartana.
आशीविष इव क्रुद्धः स्तम्भितो मन्त्रतेजसा ।
तथाद्य भाति कर्णो मे शान्तज्वाल इवानलः ॥२०॥
20. āśīviṣa iva kruddhaḥ stambhito mantratejasā ,
tathādya bhāti karṇo me śāntajvāla ivānalaḥ.
20. āśīviṣaḥ iva kruddhaḥ stambhitaḥ mantra-tejasā
tathā adya bhāti karṇaḥ me śāntajvālaḥ iva analaḥ
20. adya karṇaḥ me kruddhaḥ āśīviṣaḥ iva mantra-tejasā stambhitaḥ,
tathā śāntajvālaḥ analaḥ iva bhāti
20. Today, Karna appears to me like an enraged venomous snake paralyzed by the power of a mantra, or like a fire whose flames have been extinguished.
यदा प्रभृति कर्णाय शक्तिर्दत्ता महात्मना ।
वासवेन महाबाहो प्राप्ता यासौ घटोत्कचे ॥२१॥
21. yadā prabhṛti karṇāya śaktirdattā mahātmanā ,
vāsavena mahābāho prāptā yāsau ghaṭotkace.
21. yadā prabhṛti karṇāya śaktiḥ dattā mahātmanā
vāsavena mahābāho prāptā yā asau ghaṭotkace
21. mahābāho,
yadā prabhṛti mahātmanā vāsavena karṇāya śaktiḥ dattā,
yā asau ghaṭotkace prāptā
21. O mighty-armed one! Since the time that spear (śakti) was given to Karna by the great-souled Vasava (Indra), it was that very spear which reached Ghatotkaca.
कुण्डलाभ्यां निमायाथ दिव्येन कवचेन च ।
तां प्राप्यामन्यत वृषा सततं त्वां हतं रणे ॥२२॥
22. kuṇḍalābhyāṁ nimāyātha divyena kavacena ca ,
tāṁ prāpyāmanyata vṛṣā satataṁ tvāṁ hataṁ raṇe.
22. kuṇḍalābhyām nimāya atha divyena kavacena ca
tām prāpya amanyata vṛṣā satatam tvām hatam raṇe
22. vṛṣā kuṇḍalābhyām divyena kavacena ca nimāya
tām prāpya satatam tvām raṇe hatam amanyata
22. And having secured the earrings and the divine armor, Vṛṣa (Karṇa), having thus obtained that (protection/power), constantly believed that you had been slain in battle.
एवं गतेऽपि शक्योऽयं हन्तुं नान्येन केनचित् ।
ऋते त्वा पुरुषव्याघ्र शपे सत्येन चानघ ॥२३॥
23. evaṁ gate'pi śakyo'yaṁ hantuṁ nānyena kenacit ,
ṛte tvā puruṣavyāghra śape satyena cānagha.
23. evam gate api śakyaḥ ayam hantum na anyena kenacit
ṛte tvā puruṣavyāghra śape satyena ca anagha
23. anagha puruṣavyāghra evam gate api ayam tvā ṛte anyena kenacit na hantum śakyaḥ.
satyena ca śape.
23. Even in this situation, this one (Karṇa) cannot be killed by anyone else, O tiger among men, except by you. I swear by truth, O sinless one.
ब्रह्मण्यः सत्यवादी च तपस्वी नियतव्रतः ।
रिपुष्वपि दयावांश्च तस्मात्कर्णो वृषा स्मृतः ॥२४॥
24. brahmaṇyaḥ satyavādī ca tapasvī niyatavrataḥ ,
ripuṣvapi dayāvāṁśca tasmātkarṇo vṛṣā smṛtaḥ.
24. brāhmaṇyaḥ satyavādī ca tapasvī niyatavrataḥ
ripuṣu api dayāvān ca tasmāt karṇaḥ vṛṣā smṛtaḥ
24. satyavādī brāhmaṇyaḥ tapasvī niyatavrataḥ ripuṣu api dayāvān ca (asti).
tasmāt karṇaḥ vṛṣā smṛtaḥ.
24. He is devoted to Brahmins, a speaker of truth, an ascetic (tapasvī) firm in his vows, and compassionate even towards his enemies. Therefore, Karṇa is remembered as Vṛṣa.
युद्धशौण्डो महाबाहुर्नित्योद्यतशरासनः ।
केसरीव वने मर्दन्मत्तमातङ्गयूथपान् ।
विमदान्रथशार्दूलान्कुरुते रणमूर्धनि ॥२५॥
25. yuddhaśauṇḍo mahābāhurnityodyataśarāsanaḥ ,
kesarīva vane mardanmattamātaṅgayūthapān ,
vimadānrathaśārdūlānkurute raṇamūrdhani.
25. yuddhaśauṇḍaḥ mahābāhuḥ
nityodyataśarāsanaḥ kesarī iva vane mardan
mattamātaṅgayūthapān vimadān
rathaśārdūlān kurute raṇamūrdhani
25. yuddhaśauṇḍaḥ mahābāhuḥ nityodyataśarāsanaḥ
(saḥ) vane kesarī iva
mattamātaṅgayūthapān mardan (san)
raṇamūrdhani rathaśārdūlān vimadān kurute
25. He is skilled in battle, mighty-armed, and always has his bow ready. Like a lion crushing the leaders of intoxicated elephant herds in a forest, he renders even the foremost charioteers (rathashārdūlān) humbled (vimadān) at the forefront of battle.
मध्यंगत इवादित्यो यो न शक्यो निरीक्षितुम् ।
त्वदीयैः पुरुषव्याघ्र योधमुख्यैर्महात्मभिः ।
शरजालसहस्रांशुः शरदीव दिवाकरः ॥२६॥
26. madhyaṁgata ivādityo yo na śakyo nirīkṣitum ,
tvadīyaiḥ puruṣavyāghra yodhamukhyairmahātmabhiḥ ,
śarajālasahasrāṁśuḥ śaradīva divākaraḥ.
26. madhyamgataḥ iva ādityaḥ yaḥ na śakyaḥ
nirīkṣitum tvadīyaiḥ puruṣavyāghra
yodhamukhyaiḥ mahātmabhiḥ
śarajālasahasrāṃśuḥ śaradi iva divākaraḥ
26. puruṣavyāghra yaḥ madhyamgataḥ ādityaḥ iva (asti) saḥ tvadīyaiḥ mahātmabhiḥ yodhamukhyaiḥ na nirīkṣitum śakyaḥ (asti).
śaradi divākaraḥ iva śarajālasahasrāṃśuḥ (asti).
26. O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), just as the sun (āditya) at its zenith cannot be gazed upon directly, so he cannot be gazed upon by your great-souled (mahātman) chief warriors. He is like the autumnal sun (divākara), whose thousands of rays are like dense networks of arrows.
तपान्ते तोयदो यद्वच्छरधाराः क्षरत्यसौ ।
दिव्यास्त्रजलदः कर्णः पर्जन्य इव वृष्टिमान् ।
सोऽद्य मानुषतां प्राप्तो विमुक्तः शक्रदत्तया ॥२७॥
27. tapānte toyado yadvaccharadhārāḥ kṣaratyasau ,
divyāstrajaladaḥ karṇaḥ parjanya iva vṛṣṭimān ,
so'dya mānuṣatāṁ prāpto vimuktaḥ śakradattayā.
27. tapānte toyadaḥ yadvat śaradhārāḥ
kṣarati asau divyāstrajaladaḥ karṇaḥ
parjanyaḥ iva vṛṣṭimān saḥ adya
mānuṣatām prāptaḥ vimuktaḥ śakradattayā
27. yadvat toyadaḥ tapānte (jaladhārāḥ) kṣarati asau divyāstrajaladaḥ karṇaḥ parjanyaḥ vṛṣṭimān iva śaradhārāḥ kṣarati.
saḥ adya mānuṣatām prāptaḥ śakradattayā vimuktaḥ (asti).
27. Just as a cloud (toyada) at the end of the hot season (tapānta) showers its streams of water, so does Karṇa, a cloud (jalada) of divine weapons (divyāstra), shower streams of arrows, like a rain-bearing cloud (parjanya). Having attained a human state (mānuṣatā) today, he is now free from the divine weapon bestowed by Indra (śakra).
एको हि योगोऽस्य भवेद्वधाय छिद्रे ह्येनं स्वप्रमत्तः प्रमत्तम् ।
कृच्छ्रप्राप्तं रथचक्रे निमग्ने हन्याः पूर्वं त्वं तु संज्ञां विचार्य ॥२८॥
28. eko hi yogo'sya bhavedvadhāya; chidre hyenaṁ svapramattaḥ pramattam ,
kṛcchraprāptaṁ rathacakre nimagne; hanyāḥ pūrvaṁ tvaṁ tu saṁjñāṁ vicārya.
28. ekaḥ hi yogaḥ asya bhavet vadhāya
chidre hi enam svapramattaḥ pramattam
kṛcchraprāptam rathacakre nimagne
hanyāḥ pūrvam tvam tu saṃjñām vicārya
28. hi asya vadhāya ekaḥ yogaḥ bhavet.
tvam tu saṃjñām vicārya hi svapramattaḥ (san) pramattam chidre (sthitam) rathacakre nimagne kṛcchraprāptam enam pūrvam hanyāḥ.
28. Indeed, there is only one way (yoga) for his demise. You, being vigilant, should strike him when he is in a vulnerable position (chidra) and heedless (pramatta), especially when he has fallen into dire difficulty with his chariot wheel stuck. You must kill him first, after carefully considering your pledge (saṃjñā).
जरासंधश्चेदिराजो महात्मा महाबलश्चैकलव्यो निषादः ।
एकैकशो निहताः सर्व एव योगैस्तैस्तैस्त्वद्धितार्थं मयैव ॥२९॥
29. jarāsaṁdhaścedirājo mahātmā; mahābalaścaikalavyo niṣādaḥ ,
ekaikaśo nihatāḥ sarva eva; yogaistaistaistvaddhitārthaṁ mayaiva.
29. Jarāsaṃdhaḥ Cedirājaḥ mahātmā
mahābalaḥ ca ekalavyaḥ niṣādaḥ
ekaikaśaḥ nihatāḥ sarve eva yogaiḥ
taiḥ taiḥ tvaddhitārtham mayā eva
29. Jarāsaṃdhaḥ ca Cedirājaḥ mahātmā mahābalaḥ ca ekalavyaḥ niṣādaḥ sarve eva ekaikaśaḥ taiḥ taiḥ yogaiḥ tvaddhitārtham mayā eva nihatāḥ (santi).
29. Jarāsandha, and the great-souled (mahātman) and mighty king of Cedi, and Ekalavya the Niṣāda—all of them were killed one by one by me alone, through various stratagems (yoga), for your benefit.
अथापरे निहता राक्षसेन्द्रा हिडिम्बकिर्मीरबकप्रधानाः ।
अलायुधः परसैन्यावमर्दी घटोत्कचश्चोग्रकर्मा तरस्वी ॥३०॥
30. athāpare nihatā rākṣasendrā; hiḍimbakirmīrabakapradhānāḥ ,
alāyudhaḥ parasainyāvamardī; ghaṭotkacaścograkarmā tarasvī.
30. atha apare nihātāḥ rākṣasendrāḥ hiḍimbakirmīrabakaprādhānāḥ
alāyudhaḥ parasainyāvamardī ghaṭotkacaḥ ca ugrakarmā tarasvī
30. atha apare rākṣasendrāḥ hiḍimbakirmīrabakaprādhānāḥ alāyudhaḥ
parasainyāvamardī ca ugrakarmā tarasvī ghaṭotkacaḥ nihātāḥ
30. Then, other chiefs of Rākṣasas (demons) were killed, foremost among them Hiḍimba, Kirmīra, and Baka. Also among these was Alāyudha, the destroyer of enemy armies, and Ghaṭotkaca, who was powerful and performed terrible deeds.
