भीष्म उवाच ।
एवमुक्तस्तदा रामो जहि भीष्ममिति प्रभो ।
उवाच रुदतीं कन्यां चोदयन्तीं पुनः पुनः ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
evamuktastadā rāmo jahi bhīṣmamiti prabho ,
uvāca rudatīṁ kanyāṁ codayantīṁ punaḥ punaḥ.

काश्ये कामं न गृह्णामि शस्त्रं वै वरवर्णिनि ।
ऋते ब्रह्मविदां हेतोः किमन्यत्करवाणि ते ॥२॥
2. kāśye kāmaṁ na gṛhṇāmi śastraṁ vai varavarṇini ,
ṛte brahmavidāṁ hetoḥ kimanyatkaravāṇi te.
2. kāśye kāmam na gṛhṇāmi śastram vai varavarṇini
ṛte brahmavidām hetoḥ kim anyat karavāṇi te
2. kāśye varavarṇini,
kāmam vai śastram na gṛhṇāmi.
brahmavidām hetoḥ ṛte,
te anyat kim karavāṇi?
2. O princess of Kashi, O fair-complexioned one, I certainly do not wield a weapon. Indeed, what else can I do for you, except for the sake of those who know (brahman)?
वाचा भीष्मश्च शाल्वश्च मम राज्ञि वशानुगौ ।
भविष्यतोऽनवद्याङ्गि तत्करिष्यामि मा शुचः ॥३॥
3. vācā bhīṣmaśca śālvaśca mama rājñi vaśānugau ,
bhaviṣyato'navadyāṅgi tatkariṣyāmi mā śucaḥ.
3. vācā bhīṣmaḥ ca śālvaḥ ca mama rājñi vaśānugau
bhaviṣyataḥ anavadyāṅgi tat kariṣyāmi mā śucaḥ
3. rājñi anavadyāṅgi mama vācā bhīṣmaḥ ca śālvaḥ
ca vaśānugau bhaviṣyataḥ tat kariṣyāmi mā śucaḥ
3. O queen, O lady of flawless limbs, by my word, Bhishma and Shalva will both become obedient. I will accomplish that; do not grieve.
न तु शस्त्रं ग्रहीष्यामि कथंचिदपि भामिनि ।
ऋते नियोगाद्विप्राणामेष मे समयः कृतः ॥४॥
4. na tu śastraṁ grahīṣyāmi kathaṁcidapi bhāmini ,
ṛte niyogādviprāṇāmeṣa me samayaḥ kṛtaḥ.
4. na tu śastraṃ grahīṣyāmi kathaṃcit api bhāmini
ṛte niyogāt viprāṇām eṣaḥ me samayaḥ kṛtaḥ
4. bhāmini tu aham śastraṃ kathaṃcit api na grahīṣyāmi
viprāṇām niyogāt ṛte eṣaḥ samayaḥ me kṛtaḥ
4. But I will certainly not take up a weapon by any means, O passionate lady, except by the command of the Brahmins. This promise (samaya) has been made by me.
अम्बोवाच ।
मम दुःखं भगवता व्यपनेयं यतस्ततः ।
तत्तु भीष्मप्रसूतं मे तं जहीश्वर माचिरम् ॥५॥
5. ambovāca ,
mama duḥkhaṁ bhagavatā vyapaneyaṁ yatastataḥ ,
tattu bhīṣmaprasūtaṁ me taṁ jahīśvara māciram.
5. ambā uvāca mama duḥkham bhagavatā vyapaneyam yataḥ tataḥ
tat tu bhīṣma prasūtam me tam jahi īśvara mā aciram
5. ambā uvāca īśvara mama duḥkham bhagavatā yataḥ tataḥ
vyapaneyam tu tat me bhīṣma prasūtam tam mā aciram jahi
5. Amba said: My sorrow must be removed by you, O Lord, in whatever way possible. But that sorrow of mine originates from Bhishma. Therefore, O Lord, kill him without delay.
राम उवाच ।
काशिकन्ये पुनर्ब्रूहि भीष्मस्ते चरणावुभौ ।
शिरसा वन्दनार्होऽपि ग्रहीष्यति गिरा मम ॥६॥
6. rāma uvāca ,
kāśikanye punarbrūhi bhīṣmaste caraṇāvubhau ,
śirasā vandanārho'pi grahīṣyati girā mama.
6. rāmaḥ uvāca kāśika kanye punar brūhi bhīṣmaḥ te caraṇau
ubhau śirasā vandanārhaḥ api grahīṣyati girā mama
6. rāmaḥ uvāca kāśika kanye punar brūhi mama girā bhīṣmaḥ
vandanārhaḥ api te ubhau caraṇau śirasā grahīṣyati
6. Rama said: O princess of Kashi, say this again: 'Bhishma, though worthy of veneration, will grasp both your feet with his head at my word'.
अम्बोवाच ।
जहि भीष्मं रणे राम मम चेदिच्छसि प्रियम् ।
प्रतिश्रुतं च यदि तत्सत्यं कर्तुमिहार्हसि ॥७॥
7. ambovāca ,
jahi bhīṣmaṁ raṇe rāma mama cedicchasi priyam ,
pratiśrutaṁ ca yadi tatsatyaṁ kartumihārhasi.
7. ambā uvāca jahi bhīṣmam raṇe rāma mama cet icchasi
priyam pratiśrutam ca yadi tat satyam kartum iha arhasi
7. ambā uvāca rāma,
cet mama priyam icchasi,
raṇe bhīṣmam jahi ca yadi tat pratiśrutam,
(tvam) iha satyam kartum arhasi
7. Ambā said: "Rāma, if you wish to do me a favor, kill Bhīṣma in battle. And if that which was promised (pratiśruta) by you here, you ought to make it true."
भीष्म उवाच ।
तयोः संवदतोरेवं राजन्रामाम्बयोस्तदा ।
अकृतव्रणो जामदग्न्यमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥८॥
8. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tayoḥ saṁvadatorevaṁ rājanrāmāmbayostadā ,
akṛtavraṇo jāmadagnyamidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
8. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca tayoḥ saṃvadatoḥ evam rājan rāmāmbayoḥ
tadā akṛtavraṇaḥ jāmadagnyam idam vacanam abravīt
8. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca rājan,
tadā evam tayoḥ rāmāmbayoḥ saṃvadatoḥ,
akṛtavraṇaḥ idam vacanam jāmadagnyam abravīt
8. Bhīṣma said: "O King, while Rāma and Ambā were thus conversing, Akṛtavraṇa then spoke this word to Jāmadagnya (Paraśurāma)."
शरणागतां महाबाहो कन्यां न त्यक्तुमर्हसि ।
जहि भीष्मं रणे राम गर्जन्तमसुरं यथा ॥९॥
9. śaraṇāgatāṁ mahābāho kanyāṁ na tyaktumarhasi ,
jahi bhīṣmaṁ raṇe rāma garjantamasuraṁ yathā.
9. śaraṇāgatām mahābāho kanyām na tyaktum arhasi
jahi bhīṣmam raṇe rāma garjantam asuram yathā
9. mahābāho,
śaraṇāgatām kanyām na tyaktum arhasi rāma,
garjantam asuram yathā raṇe bhīṣmam jahi
9. "O mighty-armed one (mahābāho), you ought not to abandon the maiden (kanyā) who has sought refuge. Rāma, kill Bhīṣma in battle, just like one would kill a roaring demon (asura)."
यदि भीष्मस्त्वयाहूतो रणे राम महामुने ।
निर्जितोऽस्मीति वा ब्रूयात्कुर्याद्वा वचनं तव ॥१०॥
10. yadi bhīṣmastvayāhūto raṇe rāma mahāmune ,
nirjito'smīti vā brūyātkuryādvā vacanaṁ tava.
10. yadi bhīṣmaḥ tvayā āhūtaḥ raṇe rāma mahāmune
nirjitaḥ asmi iti vā brūyāt kuryāt vā vacanam tava
10. mahāmune rāma,
yadi bhīṣmaḥ tvayā raṇe āhūtaḥ,
(tadā saḥ) nirjitaḥ asmi iti vā brūyāt,
vā tava vacanam kuryāt
10. "O great sage (mahāmune) Rāma, if Bhīṣma is summoned by you in battle, he should either declare, 'I am conquered (nirjita),' or he should fulfill your command."
कृतमस्या भवेत्कार्यं कन्याया भृगुनन्दन ।
वाक्यं सत्यं च ते वीर भविष्यति कृतं विभो ॥११॥
11. kṛtamasyā bhavetkāryaṁ kanyāyā bhṛgunandana ,
vākyaṁ satyaṁ ca te vīra bhaviṣyati kṛtaṁ vibho.
11. kṛtam asyāḥ bhavet kāryam kanyāyāḥ bhṛgunandana
vākyam satyam ca te vīra bhaviṣyati kṛtam vibho
11. bhṛgunandana vibho vīra asyāḥ kanyāyāḥ kāryam
kṛtam bhavet te vākyam ca satyam kṛtam bhaviṣyati
11. O son of Bhrigu, O powerful one, O hero, the task of this maiden shall be accomplished, and your word shall be made true.
इयं चापि प्रतिज्ञा ते तदा राम महामुने ।
जित्वा वै क्षत्रियान्सर्वान्ब्राह्मणेषु प्रतिश्रुतम् ॥१२॥
12. iyaṁ cāpi pratijñā te tadā rāma mahāmune ,
jitvā vai kṣatriyānsarvānbrāhmaṇeṣu pratiśrutam.
12. iyam ca api pratijñā te tadā rāma mahāmune jitvā
vai kṣatriyān sarvān brāhmaṇeṣu pratiśrutam
12. rāma mahāmune tadā iyam te pratijñā ca api sarvān
kṣatriyān jitvā brāhmaṇeṣu vai pratiśrutam
12. O Rāma, O great sage, this was also your promise (pratijñā) then: that having conquered all kṣatriyas, you pledged (this) to the brāhmaṇas.
ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियो वैश्यः शूद्रश्चैव रणे यदि ।
ब्रह्मद्विड्भविता तं वै हनिष्यामीति भार्गव ॥१३॥
13. brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyo vaiśyaḥ śūdraścaiva raṇe yadi ,
brahmadviḍbhavitā taṁ vai haniṣyāmīti bhārgava.
13. brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyaḥ vaiśyaḥ śūdraḥ ca eva raṇe yadi
brahmadviṭ bhavitā tam vai haniṣyāmi iti bhārgava
13. bhārgava yadi raṇe brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyaḥ vaiśyaḥ śūdraḥ
ca eva brahmadviṭ bhavitā tam vai haniṣyāmi iti
13. O Bhārgava, (you said) 'If a brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya, or śūdra, indeed, becomes a hater of brāhmaṇas (brahma-dviṭ) in battle, then I will certainly kill him,'
शरणं हि प्रपन्नानां भीतानां जीवितार्थिनाम् ।
न शक्ष्यामि परित्यागं कर्तुं जीवन्कथंचन ॥१४॥
14. śaraṇaṁ hi prapannānāṁ bhītānāṁ jīvitārthinām ,
na śakṣyāmi parityāgaṁ kartuṁ jīvankathaṁcana.
14. śaraṇam hi prapannānām bhītānām jīvitārthinām
na śakṣyāmi parityāgam kartum jīvan kathaṃcana
14. hi śaraṇam prapannānām bhītānām jīvitārthinām
parityāgam jīvan kathaṃcana kartum na śakṣyāmi
14. Indeed, I cannot abandon in any way, while I am alive, those who have sought refuge, who are afraid, and who desire life.
यश्च क्षत्रं रणे कृत्स्नं विजेष्यति समागतम् ।
दृप्तात्मानमहं तं च हनिष्यामीति भार्गव ॥१५॥
15. yaśca kṣatraṁ raṇe kṛtsnaṁ vijeṣyati samāgatam ,
dṛptātmānamahaṁ taṁ ca haniṣyāmīti bhārgava.
15. yaḥ ca kṣatram raṇe kṛtsnam vijesyati samāgatam
dṛptātmānam aham tam ca haniṣyāmi iti bhārgava
15. bhārgava yaḥ ca raṇe samāgatam kṛtsnam kṣatram
vijesyati tam dṛptātmānam aham ca haniṣyāmi iti
15. O Bhargava, I will slay that arrogant one who will conquer the entire assembled warrior class (kṣatram) in battle.
स एवं विजयी राम भीष्मः कुरुकुलोद्वहः ।
तेन युध्यस्व संग्रामे समेत्य भृगुनन्दन ॥१६॥
16. sa evaṁ vijayī rāma bhīṣmaḥ kurukulodvahaḥ ,
tena yudhyasva saṁgrāme sametya bhṛgunandana.
16. saḥ evam vijayī rāma bhīṣmaḥ kurukulodvahaḥ
tena yudhyasva saṃgrāme sametya bhṛgunandana
16. rāma saḥ evam vijayī bhīṣmaḥ kurukulodvahaḥ
bhṛgunandana tena sametya saṃgrāme yudhyasva
16. O Rāma, that Bhīṣma, the upholder of the Kuru lineage (kurukula), is indeed victorious. O descendant of Bhrigu, engage him and fight with him in battle.
राम उवाच ।
स्मराम्यहं पूर्वकृतां प्रतिज्ञामृषिसत्तम ।
तथैव च करिष्यामि यथा साम्नैव लप्स्यते ॥१७॥
17. rāma uvāca ,
smarāmyahaṁ pūrvakṛtāṁ pratijñāmṛṣisattama ,
tathaiva ca kariṣyāmi yathā sāmnaiva lapsyate.
17. rāmaḥ uvāca smarāmi aham pūrvakṛtām pratijñām ṛṣisattama
tathā eva ca kariṣyāmi yathā sāmnā eva lapsyate
17. rāmaḥ uvāca ṛṣisattama aham pūrvakṛtām pratijñām
smarāmi ca tathā eva kariṣyāmi yathā sāmnā eva lapsyate
17. Rāma said: 'O best among sages (ṛṣisattama), I remember the vow (pratijñā) made previously. And I will act in such a way that it will be achieved by peaceful means (sāman) alone.'
कार्यमेतन्महद्ब्रह्मन्काशिकन्यामनोगतम् ।
गमिष्यामि स्वयं तत्र कन्यामादाय यत्र सः ॥१८॥
18. kāryametanmahadbrahmankāśikanyāmanogatam ,
gamiṣyāmi svayaṁ tatra kanyāmādāya yatra saḥ.
18. kāryam etat mahat brahman kāśikanyāmanogatam
gamiṣyāmi svayam tatra kanyām ādāya yatra saḥ
18. brahman etat mahat kāśikanyāmanogatam kāryam aham
svayam kanyām ādāya yatra saḥ tatra gamiṣyāmi
18. O Brahmin (brahman), this great task, which is the desire of the Kāśī princess, I myself will go there, taking the maiden, to where he is.
यदि भीष्मो रणश्लाघी न करिष्यति मे वचः ।
हनिष्याम्येनमुद्रिक्तमिति मे निश्चिता मतिः ॥१९॥
19. yadi bhīṣmo raṇaślāghī na kariṣyati me vacaḥ ,
haniṣyāmyenamudriktamiti me niścitā matiḥ.
19. yadi bhīṣmaḥ raṇaślāghī na kariṣyati me vacaḥ
haniṣyāmi enam udriktam iti me niścitā matiḥ
19. yadi raṇaślāghī bhīṣmaḥ me vacaḥ na kariṣyati,
enam udriktam (aham) haniṣyāmi.
iti me matiḥ niścitā (asti).
19. If Bhishma, who takes pride in battle, does not heed my words, I will kill him when he becomes arrogant. This is my firm resolve.
न हि बाणा मयोत्सृष्टाः सज्जन्तीह शरीरिणाम् ।
कायेषु विदितं तुभ्यं पुरा क्षत्रियसंगरे ॥२०॥
20. na hi bāṇā mayotsṛṣṭāḥ sajjantīha śarīriṇām ,
kāyeṣu viditaṁ tubhyaṁ purā kṣatriyasaṁgare.
20. na hi bāṇāḥ mayā utsṛṣṭāḥ sajjanti iha śarīriṇām
kāyeṣu viditam tubhyam purā kṣatriyasaṃgare
20. hi mayā utsṛṣṭāḥ bāṇāḥ iha śarīriṇām kāyeṣu na sajjanti.
(etat) tubhyam purā kṣatriyasaṃgare viditam.
20. Indeed, the arrows released by me do not remain embedded in the bodies of warriors. This is known to you from previous battles among kshatriyas.
भीष्म उवाच ।
एवमुक्त्वा ततो रामः सह तैर्ब्रह्मवादिभिः ।
प्रयाणाय मतिं कृत्वा समुत्तस्थौ महामनाः ॥२१॥
21. bhīṣma uvāca ,
evamuktvā tato rāmaḥ saha tairbrahmavādibhiḥ ,
prayāṇāya matiṁ kṛtvā samuttasthau mahāmanāḥ.
21. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca evam uktvā tataḥ rāmaḥ saha taiḥ
brahmavādibhiḥ prayāṇāya matim kṛtvā samuttasthau mahāmanāḥ
21. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca.
evam uktvā tataḥ mahāmanāḥ rāmaḥ taiḥ brahmavādibhiḥ saha prayāṇāya matim kṛtvā samuttasthau.
21. Bhishma said: Having spoken thus, the magnanimous Rama then rose, having resolved to depart, accompanied by those expounders of brahman (brahman).
ततस्ते तामुषित्वा तु रजनीं तत्र तापसाः ।
हुताग्नयो जप्तजप्याः प्रतस्थुर्मज्जिघांसया ॥२२॥
22. tataste tāmuṣitvā tu rajanīṁ tatra tāpasāḥ ,
hutāgnayo japtajapyāḥ pratasthurmajjighāṁsayā.
22. tataḥ te tām uṣitvā tu rajanīm tatra tāpasāḥ
hutāgnayaḥ japtajapyāḥ pratastur mat-jighāṃsayā
22. tataḥ tu te tāpasāḥ tām rajanīm tatra uṣitvā,
hutāgnayaḥ japtajapyāḥ (santaḥ),
mat-jighāṃsayā pratastur.
22. Then those ascetics, having spent that night there, having performed their fire offerings and recited their prayers, set out with the intention of killing me.
अभ्यगच्छत्ततो रामः सह तैर्ब्राह्मणर्षभैः ।
कुरुक्षेत्रं महाराज कन्यया सह भारत ॥२३॥
23. abhyagacchattato rāmaḥ saha tairbrāhmaṇarṣabhaiḥ ,
kurukṣetraṁ mahārāja kanyayā saha bhārata.
23. abhyagacchat tataḥ rāmaḥ saha taiḥ brāhmaṇarṣabhaiḥ
kurukṣetram mahārāja kanyayā saha bhārata
23. mahārāja bhārata tataḥ rāmaḥ taiḥ brāhmaṇarṣabhaiḥ
saha kanyayā saha kurukṣetram abhyagacchat
23. O great king (mahārāja), O descendant of Bharata (bhārata), thereafter Rama, accompanied by those foremost brahmins and the maiden, proceeded to Kurukshetra.
न्यविशन्त ततः सर्वे परिगृह्य सरस्वतीम् ।
तापसास्ते महात्मानो भृगुश्रेष्ठपुरस्कृताः ॥२४॥
24. nyaviśanta tataḥ sarve parigṛhya sarasvatīm ,
tāpasāste mahātmāno bhṛguśreṣṭhapuraskṛtāḥ.
24. nyaviśanta tataḥ sarve parigṛhya sarasvatīm
tāpasāḥ te mahātmānaḥ bhṛguśreṣṭhapuraskṛtāḥ
24. tataḥ te sarve mahātmānaḥ bhṛguśreṣṭhapuraskṛtāḥ
tāpasāḥ sarasvatīm parigṛhya nyaviśanta
24. Thereafter, all those great-souled ascetics, led by the foremost of the Bhrigus, settled down, having approached the Sarasvati (river).
