ऋश्यशृङ्ग उवाच ।
इहागतो जटिलो ब्रह्मचारी न वै ह्रस्वो नातिदीर्घो मनस्वी ।
सुवर्णवर्णः कमलायताक्षः सुतः सुराणामिव शोभमानः ॥१॥
1. ṛśyaśṛṅga uvāca ,
ihāgato jaṭilo brahmacārī; na vai hrasvo nātidīrgho manasvī ,
suvarṇavarṇaḥ kamalāyatākṣaḥ; sutaḥ surāṇāmiva śobhamānaḥ.
1. ṛśyaśṛṅgaḥ uvāca iha āgataḥ jaṭilaḥ
brahmacārī na vai hrasvaḥ na atidīrghaḥ
manasvī suvarṇavarṇaḥ kamalāyatākṣaḥ
sutaḥ surāṇām iva śobhamānaḥ
1. Ṛṣyaśṛṅga said: 'A celibate student (brahmacārī) with matted locks has arrived here. He is certainly neither short nor excessively tall, and he is intelligent. He has a golden complexion and broad eyes like a lotus. He shines like a son of the gods.'
समृद्धरूपः सवितेव दीप्तः सुशुक्लकृष्णाक्षतरश्चकोरैः ।
नीलाः प्रसन्नाश्च जटाः सुगन्धा हिरण्यरज्जुग्रथिताः सुदीर्घाः ॥२॥
2. samṛddharūpaḥ saviteva dīptaḥ; suśuklakṛṣṇākṣataraścakoraiḥ ,
nīlāḥ prasannāśca jaṭāḥ sugandhā; hiraṇyarajjugrathitāḥ sudīrghāḥ.
2. samṛddharūpaḥ savitā iva dīptaḥ
suśuklakṛṣṇākṣataraḥ cakoraiḥ
nīlāḥ prasannāḥ ca jaṭāḥ sugandhāḥ
hiraṇyarajjugrathitāḥ sudīrghāḥ
2. His form is perfect, and he shines like the sun. His eyes are very white, black, and red-streaked, resembling those of cakora birds. His matted locks are dark blue, lustrous, fragrant, and very long, bound with golden cords.
आधाररूपा पुनरस्य कण्ठे विभ्राजते विद्युदिवान्तरिक्षे ।
द्वौ चास्य पिण्डावधरेण कण्ठमजातरोमौ सुमनोहरौ च ॥३॥
3. ādhārarūpā punarasya kaṇṭhe; vibhrājate vidyudivāntarikṣe ,
dvau cāsya piṇḍāvadhareṇa kaṇṭha;majātaromau sumanoharau ca.
3. ādhārarūpā punar asya kaṇṭhe
vibhrājate vidyut iva antarikṣe
dvau ca asya piṇḍau adharena
kaṇṭham ajātaromau sumanoharau ca
3. A necklace, serving as a support, shines brilliantly on her neck, like lightning in the sky. Furthermore, two charming and hairless fleshy parts are present below her throat.
विलग्नमध्यश्च स नाभिदेशे कटिश्च तस्यातिकृतप्रमाणा ।
तथास्य चीरान्तरिता प्रभाति हिरण्मयी मेखला मे यथेयम् ॥४॥
4. vilagnamadhyaśca sa nābhideśe; kaṭiśca tasyātikṛtapramāṇā ,
tathāsya cīrāntaritā prabhāti; hiraṇmayī mekhalā me yatheyam.
4. vilagnamadhyaḥ ca saḥ nābhideśe
kaṭiḥ ca tasya atikṛtapramāṇā
tathā asya cīrāntaritā prabhāti
hiraṇmayī mekhalā me yathā iyam
4. Her waist is slender at the navel region, and her hips are perfectly proportioned. Likewise, her golden girdle, hidden by her bark-garments, shines forth just as this one (girdle) of mine (does).
अन्यच्च तस्याद्भुतदर्शनीयं विकूजितं पादयोः संप्रभाति ।
पाण्योश्च तद्वत्स्वनवन्निबद्धौ कलापकावक्षमाला यथेयम् ॥५॥
5. anyacca tasyādbhutadarśanīyaṁ; vikūjitaṁ pādayoḥ saṁprabhāti ,
pāṇyośca tadvatsvanavannibaddhau; kalāpakāvakṣamālā yatheyam.
5. anyat ca tasya adbhutadarśanīyam
vikūjitam pādayoḥ samprabhāti
pāṇyoḥ ca tadvat svanavat nibaddhau
kalāpakau akṣamālā yathā iyam
5. And another wonderfully visible tinkling sound emanates from her feet. Likewise, on her hands, two resonant and fastened bracelets (kalāpakas) are present, just like this rosary (akṣamālā) (of mine).
विचेष्टमानस्य च तस्य तानि कूजन्ति हंसा सरसीव मत्ताः ।
चीराणि तस्याद्भुतदर्शनानि नेमानि तद्वन्मम रूपवन्ति ॥६॥
6. viceṣṭamānasya ca tasya tāni; kūjanti haṁsā sarasīva mattāḥ ,
cīrāṇi tasyādbhutadarśanāni; nemāni tadvanmama rūpavanti.
6. viceṣṭamānasya ca tasya tāni
kūjanti haṃsāḥ sarasi iva mattāḥ
cīrāṇi tasya adbhutadarśanāni
na imāni tadvat mama rūpavanti
6. And as she moves, her ornaments (or their sounds) tinkle like intoxicated swans in a lake. Her bark-garments are wonderfully visible, but these bark-garments of mine are not beautiful like those.
वक्त्रं च तस्याद्भुतदर्शनीयं प्रव्याहृतं ह्लादयतीव चेतः ।
पुंस्कोकिलस्येव च तस्य वाणी तां शृण्वतो मे व्यथितोऽन्तरात्मा ॥७॥
7. vaktraṁ ca tasyādbhutadarśanīyaṁ; pravyāhṛtaṁ hlādayatīva cetaḥ ,
puṁskokilasyeva ca tasya vāṇī; tāṁ śṛṇvato me vyathito'ntarātmā.
7. vaktram ca tasya adbhuta-darśanīyam
pravyāhṛtam hlādayati iva cetaḥ
| puṃskokilasya iva ca tasya vāṇī
tām śṛṇvataḥ me vyathitaḥ antarātman
7. And his face is wonderfully beautiful to behold; his utterance, as if, delights the mind. Moreover, his voice is like that of a male cuckoo; hearing it, my inner self (antarātman) is distressed.
यथा वनं माधवमासि मध्ये समीरितं श्वसनेनाभिवाति ।
तथा स वात्युत्तमपुण्यगन्धी निषेव्यमाणः पवनेन तात ॥८॥
8. yathā vanaṁ mādhavamāsi madhye; samīritaṁ śvasanenābhivāti ,
tathā sa vātyuttamapuṇyagandhī; niṣevyamāṇaḥ pavanena tāta.
8. yathā vanam mādhava-māsi madhye
samīritam śvasanena abhivāti
| tathā sa vāti uttama-puṇya-gandhī
niṣevyamāṇaḥ pavanena tāta
8. Just as a forest, stirred by the wind, diffuses its fragrance in the middle of the month of Madhava (spring), so too, dear father, he, served by the wind, spreads a supreme, sacred scent.
सुसंयताश्चापि जटा विभक्ता द्वैधीकृता भान्ति समा ललाटे ।
कर्णौ च चित्रैरिव चक्रवालैः समावृतौ तस्य सुरूपवद्भिः ॥९॥
9. susaṁyatāścāpi jaṭā vibhaktā; dvaidhīkṛtā bhānti samā lalāṭe ,
karṇau ca citrairiva cakravālaiḥ; samāvṛtau tasya surūpavadbhiḥ.
9. susaṃyatāḥ ca api jaṭāḥ vibhaktāḥ
dvaidhīkṛtāḥ bhānti samāḥ lalāṭe
| karṇau ca citraiḥ iva cakravālaiḥ
samāvṛtau tasya surūpavadbhiḥ
9. And his well-restrained, divided, and parted matted locks appear evenly on his forehead. Furthermore, his two ears are covered by beautiful, circular (ornaments), as if by wondrous discs.
तथा फलं वृत्तमथो विचित्रं समाहनत्पाणिना दक्षिणेन ।
तद्भूमिमासाद्य पुनः पुनश्च समुत्पतत्यद्भुतरूपमुच्चैः ॥१०॥
10. tathā phalaṁ vṛttamatho vicitraṁ; samāhanatpāṇinā dakṣiṇena ,
tadbhūmimāsādya punaḥ punaśca; samutpatatyadbhutarūpamuccaiḥ.
10. tathā phalam vṛttam atho vicitram
samāhanat pāṇinā dakṣiṇena |
tat bhūmim āsādya punaḥ punaḥ ca
samutpatati adbhuta-rūpam uccaiḥ
10. Then he struck the round, indeed wondrous fruit with his right hand. And that fruit, after reaching the ground again and again, springs up high in a wondrous manner.
तच्चापि हत्वा परिवर्ततेऽसौ वातेरितो वृक्ष इवावघूर्णः ।
तं प्रेक्ष्य मे पुत्रमिवामराणां प्रीतिः परा तात रतिश्च जाता ॥११॥
11. taccāpi hatvā parivartate'sau; vāterito vṛkṣa ivāvaghūrṇaḥ ,
taṁ prekṣya me putramivāmarāṇāṁ; prītiḥ parā tāta ratiśca jātā.
11. tat ca api hatvā parivartate asau
vāta īritaḥ vṛkṣaḥ iva avaghūrṇaḥ
tam prekṣya me putram iva amarāṇām
prītiḥ parā tāta ratiḥ ca jātā
11. Having slain that too, he whirls about, swaying like a tree agitated by the wind. Seeing him, O father, a supreme affection and delight arose in me, as if he were my own son, (a joy) similar to that of the gods (amara).
स मे समाश्लिष्य पुनः शरीरं जटासु गृह्याभ्यवनाम्य वक्त्रम् ।
वक्त्रेण वक्त्रं प्रणिधाय शब्दं चकार तन्मेऽजनयत्प्रहर्षम् ॥१२॥
12. sa me samāśliṣya punaḥ śarīraṁ; jaṭāsu gṛhyābhyavanāmya vaktram ,
vaktreṇa vaktraṁ praṇidhāya śabdaṁ; cakāra tanme'janayatpraharṣam.
12. saḥ me samāśliṣya punar śarīram
jaṭāsu gṛhya abhyavanamya vaktram
vaktrena vaktram praṇidhāya śabdam
cakāra tat me ajanayat praharṣam
12. He embraced my body again. Then, taking hold of my matted locks, he brought my face down, and placing his mouth to my mouth, he made a sound. That sound generated great joy in me.
न चापि पाद्यं बहु मन्यतेऽसौ फलानि चेमानि मयाहृतानि ।
एवंव्रतोऽस्मीति च मामवोचत्फलानि चान्यानि नवान्यदान्मे ॥१३॥
13. na cāpi pādyaṁ bahu manyate'sau; phalāni cemāni mayāhṛtāni ,
evaṁvrato'smīti ca māmavoca;tphalāni cānyāni navānyadānme.
13. na ca api pādyam bahu manyate asau
phalāni ca imāni mayā āhṛtāni
evam vrataḥ asmi iti ca mām avocāt
phalāni ca anyāni navāni adāt me
13. He does not much regard the foot-offering, nor these fruits I brought. He told me, 'I am one whose vow (vrata) is such,' and then he gave me other, fresh fruits.
मयोपयुक्तानि फलानि तानि नेमानि तुल्यानि रसेन तेषाम् ।
न चापि तेषां त्वगियं यथैषां साराणि नैषामिव सन्ति तेषाम् ॥१४॥
14. mayopayuktāni phalāni tāni; nemāni tulyāni rasena teṣām ,
na cāpi teṣāṁ tvagiyaṁ yathaiṣāṁ; sārāṇi naiṣāmiva santi teṣām.
14. mayā upayuktāni phalāni tāni na
imāni tulyāni rasena teṣām na
ca api teṣām tvak iyam yathā eṣām
sārāṇi na eṣām iva santi teṣām
14. The fruits I consumed are not equal in taste to these. Nor is their skin like the skin of these, and their essences are not like the essences of these (fruits).
तोयानि चैवातिरसानि मह्यं प्रादात्स वै पातुमुदाररूपः ।
पीत्वैव यान्यभ्यधिकः प्रहर्षो ममाभवद्भूश्चलितेव चासीत् ॥१५॥
15. toyāni caivātirasāni mahyaṁ; prādātsa vai pātumudārarūpaḥ ,
pītvaiva yānyabhyadhikaḥ praharṣo; mamābhavadbhūścaliteva cāsīt.
15. toyāni ca eva atirasāni mahyam
prādāt sa vai pātum udārarūpaḥ pītvā
eva yāni abhyadhikaḥ praharṣaḥ
mama abhavat bhūḥ calitā iva ca āsīt
15. That noble-looking person indeed gave me very delicious waters to drink. After drinking them, I experienced an exceedingly great joy, and it was as if the earth itself had moved.
इमानि चित्राणि च गन्धवन्ति माल्यानि तस्योद्ग्रथितानि पट्टैः ।
यानि प्रकीर्येह गतः स्वमेव स आश्रमं तपसा द्योतमानः ॥१६॥
16. imāni citrāṇi ca gandhavanti; mālyāni tasyodgrathitāni paṭṭaiḥ ,
yāni prakīryeha gataḥ svameva; sa āśramaṁ tapasā dyotamānaḥ.
16. imāni citrāṇi ca gandhavanti
mālyāni tasya udgrathitāni paṭṭaiḥ
yāni prakīrya iha gataḥ svam
eva sa āśramam tapasā dyotamānaḥ
16. These wonderful and fragrant garlands, strung with ribbons by him, he scattered here, and then returned to his own hermitage (āśrama), shining with the power of his spiritual austerities (tapas).
गतेन तेनास्मि कृतो विचेता गात्रं च मे संपरितप्यतीव ।
इच्छामि तस्यान्तिकमाशु गन्तुं तं चेह नित्यं परिवर्तमानम् ॥१७॥
17. gatena tenāsmi kṛto vicetā; gātraṁ ca me saṁparitapyatīva ,
icchāmi tasyāntikamāśu gantuṁ; taṁ ceha nityaṁ parivartamānam.
17. gatena tena asmi kṛtaḥ vicetā
gātram ca me saṃparitapyati iva
icchāmi tasya antikam āśu gantum
tam ca iha nityam parivartamānam
17. By his departure, I have been made distraught, and my body feels as if it is burning. I desire to quickly go into his presence, and to be with him as he constantly moves about here.
गच्छामि तस्यान्तिकमेव तात का नाम सा व्रतचर्या च तस्य ।
इच्छाम्यहं चरितुं तेन सार्धं यथा तपः स चरत्युग्रकर्मा ॥१८॥
18. gacchāmi tasyāntikameva tāta; kā nāma sā vratacaryā ca tasya ,
icchāmyahaṁ carituṁ tena sārdhaṁ; yathā tapaḥ sa caratyugrakarmā.
18. gacchāmi tasya antikam eva tāta
kā nāma sā vratacaryā ca tasya
icchāmi aham caritum tena sārdham
yathā tapaḥ sa carati ugrakarmā
18. O father, I will indeed go to his presence! What, pray tell, is that ascetic practice (vrata-caryā) of his? I desire to perform spiritual austerities (tapas) with him, just as he, who performs fierce deeds, practices them.
