भीमसेनं ततो द्रौणी राजन्विव्याध पत्रिणा ।
त्वरया परया युक्तो दर्शयन्नस्त्रलाघवम् ॥१॥

bhīmasenaṁ tato drauṇī rājanvivyādha patriṇā ,

1. Sañjaya said: "Then, O King, Droṇi, demonstrating his agility in using weapons and possessed of supreme speed, pierced Bhīmasena with an arrow."
अथैनं पुनराजघ्ने नवत्या निशितैः शरैः ।
सर्वमर्माणि संप्रेक्ष्य मर्मज्ञो लघुहस्तवत् ॥२॥
2. athainaṁ punarājaghne navatyā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
sarvamarmāṇi saṁprekṣya marmajño laghuhastavat.
2. atha enam punaḥ ājaghne navatyā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
sarvamarmāṇi samprekṣya marmajñaḥ laghuhastavat

2. Then, the expert in vital spots (marmajña), who was like one with light hands (laghuhastavat), having carefully observed all his vital spots, struck him again with ninety sharpened arrows.
भीमसेनः समाकीर्णो द्रौणिना निशितैः शरैः ।
रराज समरे राजन्रश्मिवानिव भास्करः ॥३॥
3. bhīmasenaḥ samākīrṇo drauṇinā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
rarāja samare rājanraśmivāniva bhāskaraḥ.

3. O king, Bhimasena, though completely covered by sharp arrows from Drona's son (Ashvatthama), shone brilliantly in battle, just like the radiant sun.
ततः शरसहस्रेण सुप्रयुक्तेन पाण्डवः ।
द्रोणपुत्रमवच्छाद्य सिंहनादममुञ्चत ॥४॥
4. tataḥ śarasahasreṇa suprayuktena pāṇḍavaḥ ,
droṇaputramavacchādya siṁhanādamamuñcata.

4. Then, the son of Pandu (Bhima), having completely covered Drona's son (Ashvatthama) with a thousand well-aimed arrows, let out a lion's roar.
शरैः शरांस्ततो द्रौणिः संवार्य युधि पाण्डवम् ।
ललाटेऽभ्यहनद्राजन्नाराचेन स्मयन्निव ॥५॥
5. śaraiḥ śarāṁstato drauṇiḥ saṁvārya yudhi pāṇḍavam ,
lalāṭe'bhyahanadrājannārācena smayanniva.

5. O king, then Drona's son (Ashvatthama), having parried the Pandava's (Bhima's) arrows in battle, struck him on the forehead with an iron arrow, as if smiling.
ललाटस्थं ततो बाणं धारयामास पाण्डवः ।
यथा शृङ्गं वने दृप्तः खड्गो धारयते नृप ॥६॥
6. lalāṭasthaṁ tato bāṇaṁ dhārayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ ,
yathā śṛṅgaṁ vane dṛptaḥ khaḍgo dhārayate nṛpa.
6. lalāṭastham tataḥ bāṇam dhārayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ
yathā śṛṅgam vane dṛptaḥ khaḍgaḥ dhārayate nṛpa
6. nṛpa tataḥ pāṇḍavaḥ lalāṭastham bāṇam dhārayāmāsa

6. O king, the Pandava (Bhima) then bore that arrow fixed on his forehead, just as a proud rhinoceros carries its horn in the forest.
ततो द्रौणिं रणे भीमो यतमानं पराक्रमी ।
त्रिभिर्विव्याध नाराचैर्ललाटे विस्मयन्निव ॥७॥
7. tato drauṇiṁ raṇe bhīmo yatamānaṁ parākramī ,
tribhirvivyādha nārācairlalāṭe vismayanniva.
7. tataḥ Drauṇim raṇe Bhīmaḥ yatamanam parākramī
tribhiḥ vivyādha nārācaiḥ lalāṭe vismayan iva

7. Then, the valiant Bhima, as if in wonder, pierced Drauṇi, who was exerting himself in battle, on the forehead with three arrows.
ललाटस्थैस्ततो बाणैर्ब्राह्मणः स व्यरोचत ।
प्रावृषीव यथा सिक्तस्त्रिशृङ्गः पर्वतोत्तमः ॥८॥
8. lalāṭasthaistato bāṇairbrāhmaṇaḥ sa vyarocata ,
prāvṛṣīva yathā siktastriśṛṅgaḥ parvatottamaḥ.
8. lalāṭasthaiḥ tataḥ bāṇaiḥ brāhmaṇaḥ sa vyarocata
prāvṛṣī iva yathā siktaḥ triśṛṅgaḥ parvatottamaḥ
8. tataḥ saḥ brāhmaṇaḥ lalāṭasthaiḥ bāṇaiḥ vyarocata,
yathā prāvṛṣī iva siktaḥ triśṛṅgaḥ parvatottamaḥ
8. Then, with those arrows fixed on his forehead, that Brahmin (brāhmaṇa) shone like an excellent three-peaked mountain, sprinkled with rain in the monsoon season.
ततः शरशतैर्द्रौणिमर्दयामास पाण्डवः ।
न चैनं कम्पयामास मातरिश्वेव पर्वतम् ॥९॥
9. tataḥ śaraśatairdrauṇimardayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ ,
na cainaṁ kampayāmāsa mātariśveva parvatam.
9. tataḥ śaraśataiḥ Drauṇim ardayāmāsa Pāṇḍavaḥ
na ca enam kampayāmāsa mātariśvā iva parvatam
9. tataḥ Pāṇḍavaḥ śaraśataiḥ Drauṇim ardayāmāsa ca enam na kampayāmāsa,
mātariśvā iva parvatam
9. Then, the Pāṇḍava (Pāṇḍava) afflicted Drauṇi with hundreds of arrows. But he did not cause him to tremble, just as the wind god (mātariśvan) does not cause a mountain to tremble.
तथैव पाण्डवं युद्धे द्रौणिः शरशतैः शितैः ।
नाकम्पयत संहृष्टो वार्योघ इव पर्वतम् ॥१०॥
10. tathaiva pāṇḍavaṁ yuddhe drauṇiḥ śaraśataiḥ śitaiḥ ,
nākampayata saṁhṛṣṭo vāryogha iva parvatam.
10. tathā eva Pāṇḍavam yuddhe Drauṇiḥ śaraśataiḥ śitaiḥ
na akampayata saṃhṛṣṭaḥ vāryoghaḥ iva parvatam
10. tathā eva saṃhṛṣṭaḥ Drauṇiḥ yuddhe śitaiḥ śaraśataiḥ Pāṇḍavam na akampayata,
vāryoghaḥ iva parvatam
10. In the same way, Drauṇi, greatly rejoiced, did not cause the Pāṇḍava (Pāṇḍava) to tremble in battle with hundreds of sharp arrows, just as a torrent of water (vāryogha) does not cause a mountain to tremble.
तावन्योन्यं शरैर्घोरैश्छादयानौ महारथौ ।
रथचर्यागतौ शूरौ शुशुभाते रणोत्कटौ ॥११॥
11. tāvanyonyaṁ śarairghoraiśchādayānau mahārathau ,
rathacaryāgatau śūrau śuśubhāte raṇotkaṭau.
11. tau anyonyam śaraiḥ ghoraiḥ chādayānau mahārathau
rathacaryāgatau śūrau śuśubhāte raṇotkaṭau
11. tau mahārathau śūrau raṇotkaṭau rathacaryāgatau
ghoraiḥ śaraiḥ anyonyam chādayānau śuśubhāte
11. Those two great charioteers, heroic and fierce in battle, covering each other with terrible arrows while engaged in chariot warfare, shone brilliantly.
आदित्याविव संदीप्तौ लोकक्षयकरावुभौ ।
स्वरश्मिभिरिवान्योन्यं तापयन्तौ शरोत्तमैः ॥१२॥
12. ādityāviva saṁdīptau lokakṣayakarāvubhau ,
svaraśmibhirivānyonyaṁ tāpayantau śarottamaiḥ.
12. ādityau iva saṃdīptau lokakṣayakarau ubhau
svarasmi-bhiḥ iva anyonyam tāpayantau śarottamaiḥ
12. ubhau ādityau iva saṃdīptau lokakṣayakarau
svarasmi-bhiḥ iva śarottamaiḥ anyonyam tāpayantau
12. Both of them, blazing intensely like two suns, bringing destruction to the worlds, tormented each other as if with their own rays, employing their excellent arrows.
कृतप्रतिकृते यत्नं कुर्वाणौ च महारणे ।
कृतप्रतिकृते यत्नं चक्राते तावभीतवत् ॥१३॥
13. kṛtapratikṛte yatnaṁ kurvāṇau ca mahāraṇe ,
kṛtapratikṛte yatnaṁ cakrāte tāvabhītavat.
13. kṛtapratikṛte yatnam kurvāṇau ca mahāraṇe
kṛtapratikṛte yatnam cakrāte tau abhītavat
13. ca mahāraṇe tau kṛtapratikṛte yatnam kurvāṇau
abhītavat kṛtapratikṛte yatnam cakrāte
13. And in the great battle, making an effort for attack and counter-attack (kṛtapratikṛta), those two fearlessly exerted themselves in action and reaction.
व्याघ्राविव च संग्रामे चेरतुस्तौ महारथौ ।
शरदंष्ट्रौ दुराधर्षौ चापव्यात्तौ भयानकौ ॥१४॥
14. vyāghrāviva ca saṁgrāme ceratustau mahārathau ,
śaradaṁṣṭrau durādharṣau cāpavyāttau bhayānakau.
14. vyāghrau iva ca saṃgrāme ceratuḥ tau mahārathau
śaradaṃṣṭrau durādharṣau cāpavyāttau bhayānakau
14. ca saṃgrāme tau mahārathau vyāghrau iva śaradaṃṣṭrau
durādharṣau cāpavyāttau bhayānakau ceratuḥ
14. And in the battle, those two great charioteers ranged like two tigers, having arrows for fangs and bows as wide-open mouths, unassailable and terrifying.
अभूतां तावदृश्यौ च शरजालैः समन्ततः ।
मेघजालैरिव च्छन्नौ गगने चन्द्रभास्करौ ॥१५॥
15. abhūtāṁ tāvadṛśyau ca śarajālaiḥ samantataḥ ,
meghajālairiva cchannau gagane candrabhāskarau.
15. abhūtām tāvat adṛśyau ca śarajālaiḥ samantataḥ
meghajālaiḥ iva channau gagane candrabhāskarau
15. tāvat śarajālaiḥ samantataḥ channau ca adṛśyau
abhūtām yathā gagane meghajālaiḥ iva candrabhāskarau
15. Meanwhile, both of them became invisible, completely covered by volleys of arrows, just as the moon and the sun are obscured by masses of clouds in the sky.
प्रकाशौ च मुहूर्तेन तत्रैवास्तामरिंदमौ ।
विमुक्तौ मेघजालेन शशिसूर्यौ यथा दिवि ॥१६॥
16. prakāśau ca muhūrtena tatraivāstāmariṁdamau ,
vimuktau meghajālena śaśisūryau yathā divi.
16. prakāśau ca muhūrtena tatra eva āstām ariṃdamau
vimuktau meghajālena śaśisūryau yathā divi
16. ca muhūrtena tatra eva ariṃdamau prakāśau āstām
yathā śaśisūryau meghajālena divi vimuktau
16. And instantly, the two subduers of enemies became visible right there, just as the moon and sun appear released from a mass of clouds in the sky.
अपसव्यं ततश्चक्रे द्रौणिस्तत्र वृकोदरम् ।
किरञ्शरशतैरुग्रैर्धाराभिरिव पर्वतम् ॥१७॥
17. apasavyaṁ tataścakre drauṇistatra vṛkodaram ,
kirañśaraśatairugrairdhārābhiriva parvatam.
17. apasavyam tataḥ cakre drauṇiḥ tatra vṛkodaram
kiran śaraśataiḥ ugraiḥ dhārābhiḥ iva parvatam
17. tataḥ drauṇiḥ tatra vṛkodaram apasavyam cakre
ugraiḥ śaraśataiḥ kiran dhārābhiḥ iva parvatam
17. Then, Droṇi (Aśvatthāman) maneuvered to the left (apasavyam) against Vṛkodara (Bhīma) there, showering him with hundreds of fierce arrows, just as (rain) torrents deluge a mountain.
न तु तन्ममृषे भीमः शत्रोर्विजयलक्षणम् ।
प्रतिचक्रे च तं राजन्पाण्डवोऽप्यपसव्यतः ॥१८॥
18. na tu tanmamṛṣe bhīmaḥ śatrorvijayalakṣaṇam ,
praticakre ca taṁ rājanpāṇḍavo'pyapasavyataḥ.
18. na tu tat mamṛṣe bhīmaḥ śatroḥ vijayalakṣaṇam
praticakre ca tam rājan pāṇḍavaḥ api apasavyataḥ
18. tu bhīmaḥ śatroḥ vijayalakṣaṇam tat na mamṛṣe ca
rājan pāṇḍavaḥ api tam apasavyataḥ praticakre
18. But Bhīma certainly did not tolerate that display of the enemy's impending victory. And, O king, that Pāṇḍava (Bhīma) also counterattacked him by moving to his left (apasavyataḥ).
मण्डलानां विभागेषु गतप्रत्यागतेषु च ।
बभूव तुमुलं युद्धं तयोस्तत्र महामृधे ॥१९॥
19. maṇḍalānāṁ vibhāgeṣu gatapratyāgateṣu ca ,
babhūva tumulaṁ yuddhaṁ tayostatra mahāmṛdhe.
19. maṇḍalānām vibhāgeṣu gatapratyāgateṣu ca
babhūva tumulam yuddham tayoḥ tatra mahāmṛdhe
19. tayoḥ tatra mahāmṛdhe maṇḍalānām vibhāgeṣu
ca gatapratyāgateṣu tumulam yuddham babhūva
19. In the sections of their battle formations, and amidst their advances and retreats, a tumultuous battle took place there between those two in that great conflict.
चरित्वा विविधान्मार्गान्मण्डलं स्थानमेव च ।
शरैः पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टैरन्योन्यमभिजघ्नतुः ॥२०॥
20. caritvā vividhānmārgānmaṇḍalaṁ sthānameva ca ,
śaraiḥ pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭairanyonyamabhijaghnatuḥ.
20. caritvā vividhān mārgān maṇḍalam sthānam eva ca
śaraiḥ pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭaiḥ anyonyam abhijaghnatuḥ
20. vividhān mārgān maṇḍalam sthānam eva ca caritvā
pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭaiḥ śaraiḥ anyonyam abhijaghnatuḥ
20. Moving through various paths, employing circular maneuvers, and holding their positions, they struck each other with arrows released from fully drawn bows.
अन्योन्यस्य वधे यत्नं चक्रतुस्तौ महारथौ ।
ईषतुर्विरथं चैव कर्तुमन्योन्यमाहवे ॥२१॥
21. anyonyasya vadhe yatnaṁ cakratustau mahārathau ,
īṣaturvirathaṁ caiva kartumanyonyamāhave.
21. anyonyasya vadhe yatnam cakratuḥ tau mahārathau
īṣatuḥ viratham ca eva kartum anyonyam āhave
21. tau mahārathau anyonyasya vadhe yatnam cakratuḥ
ca eva āhave anyonyam viratham kartum īṣatuḥ
21. Those two great warriors made an effort to kill each other, and indeed, they both wished to render the other chariot-less in battle.
ततो द्रौणिर्महास्त्राणि प्रादुश्चक्रे महारथः ।
तान्यस्त्रैरेव समरे प्रतिजघ्नेऽस्य पाण्डवः ॥२२॥
22. tato drauṇirmahāstrāṇi prāduścakre mahārathaḥ ,
tānyastraireva samare pratijaghne'sya pāṇḍavaḥ.
22. tataḥ drauṇiḥ mahāstrāṇi prāduḥ cakre mahārathaḥ
tāni astraiḥ eva samare pratijaghne asya pāṇḍavaḥ
22. tataḥ mahārathaḥ drauṇiḥ mahāstrāṇi prāduḥ cakre
pāṇḍavaḥ samare asya tāni astraiḥ eva pratijaghne
22. Then Droṇi (Aśvatthāman), the great warrior, manifested great weapons (astrāṇi). In battle, the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna) countered his (weapons) with his own weapons (astrāṇi).
ततो घोरं महाराज अस्त्रयुद्धमवर्तत ।
ग्रहयुद्धं यथा घोरं प्रजासंहरणे अभूत् ॥२३॥
23. tato ghoraṁ mahārāja astrayuddhamavartata ,
grahayuddhaṁ yathā ghoraṁ prajāsaṁharaṇe abhūt.
23. tataḥ ghoram mahārāja astra-yuddham avartata
graha-yuddham yathā ghoram prajā-saṃharaṇe abhūt
23. mahārāja,
tataḥ ghoram astra-yuddham avartata; yathā prajā-saṃharaṇe ghoram graha-yuddham abhūt
23. O great king, a terrible battle using missiles then occurred, as dreadful as the conflict of planets at the time of universal dissolution.
ते बाणाः समसज्जन्त क्षिप्तास्ताभ्यां तु भारत ।
द्योतयन्तो दिशः सर्वास्तच्च सैन्यं समन्ततः ॥२४॥
24. te bāṇāḥ samasajjanta kṣiptāstābhyāṁ tu bhārata ,
dyotayanto diśaḥ sarvāstacca sainyaṁ samantataḥ.
24. te bāṇāḥ samasajjanta kṣiptāḥ tābhyām tu bhārata
dyotayantaḥ diśaḥ sarvāḥ tat ca sainyam samantataḥ
24. bhārata,
tābhyām kṣiptāḥ te bāṇāḥ samasajjanta,
sarvāḥ diśaḥ ca tat sainyam samantataḥ dyotayantaḥ
24. O descendant of Bharata, those arrows, hurled by the two warriors, clashed together, illuminating all directions and the entire army on all sides.
बाणसंघावृतं घोरमाकाशं समपद्यत ।
उक्लापातकृतं यद्वत्प्रजानां संक्षये नृप ॥२५॥
25. bāṇasaṁghāvṛtaṁ ghoramākāśaṁ samapadyata ,
uklāpātakṛtaṁ yadvatprajānāṁ saṁkṣaye nṛpa.
25. bāṇa-saṃghāvṛtam ghoram ākāśam samapadyata
ulkā-pāta-kṛtam yadvat prajānām saṃkṣaye nṛpa
25. nṛpa,
ghoram ākāśam bāṇa-saṃghāvṛtam samapadyata,
yadvat prajānām saṃkṣaye ulkā-pāta-kṛtam (ākāśam bhavati)
25. O king, the dreadful sky became completely covered by masses of arrows, just as it appears at the destruction of beings due to a shower of meteors.
बाणाभिघातात्संजज्ञे तत्र भारत पावकः ।
सविस्फुलिङ्गो दीप्तार्चिः सोऽदहद्वाहिनीद्वयम् ॥२६॥
26. bāṇābhighātātsaṁjajñe tatra bhārata pāvakaḥ ,
savisphuliṅgo dīptārciḥ so'dahadvāhinīdvayam.
26. bāṇa-abhighātāt sañjajñe tatra bhārata pāvakaḥ
sa-visphuliṅgaḥ dīptārciḥ saḥ adahat vāhinī-dvayam
26. bhārata,
tatra bāṇa-abhighātāt sa-visphuliṅgaḥ dīptārciḥ pāvakaḥ sañjajñe.
saḥ vāhinī-dvayam adahat.
26. O descendant of Bharata, from the impact of the arrows, a fire arose there, complete with sparks and blazing flames, and that fire consumed both armies.
तत्र सिद्धा महाराज संपतन्तोऽब्रुवन्वचः ।
अति युद्धानि सर्वाणि युद्धमेतत्ततोऽधिकम् ॥२७॥
27. tatra siddhā mahārāja saṁpatanto'bruvanvacaḥ ,
ati yuddhāni sarvāṇi yuddhametattato'dhikam.
27. tatra siddhāḥ mahārāja saṃpatantaḥ abruvan vacaḥ
ati yuddhāni sarvāṇi yuddham etat tataḥ adhikam
27. mahārāja tatra saṃpatantaḥ siddhāḥ vacaḥ abruvan
etat yuddham sarvāṇi yuddhāni ati tataḥ adhikam
27. O great king, the Siddhas, descending there, spoke these words: "This battle surpasses all previous battles; indeed, it is far greater than any of them."
सर्वयुद्धानि चैतस्य कलां नार्हन्ति षोडशीम् ।
नैतादृशं पुनर्युद्धं न भूतं न भविष्यति ॥२८॥
28. sarvayuddhāni caitasya kalāṁ nārhanti ṣoḍaśīm ,
naitādṛśaṁ punaryuddhaṁ na bhūtaṁ na bhaviṣyati.
28. sarvayuddhāni ca etasya kalām na arhanti ṣoḍaśīm
na etādṛśam punaḥ yuddham na bhūtam na bhaviṣyati
28. ca sarvayuddhāni etasya kalām ṣoḍaśīm na arhanti
punaḥ etādṛśam yuddham na bhūtam na bhaviṣyati
28. Indeed, all other battles do not deserve even a sixteenth part of this one. Such a battle has never occurred in the past, nor will it ever happen again in the future.
अहो ज्ञानेन संयुक्तावुभौ चोग्रपराक्रमौ ।
अहो भीमे बलं भीममेतयोश्च कृतास्त्रता ॥२९॥
29. aho jñānena saṁyuktāvubhau cograparākramau ,
aho bhīme balaṁ bhīmametayośca kṛtāstratā.
29. aho jñānena saṃyuktau ubhau ca ugraparākramau
aho bhīme balam bhīmam etayoḥ ca kṛtāstratā
29. aho ubhau ca jñānena saṃyuktau ugraparākramau
aho bhīme balam bhīmam ca etayoḥ kṛtāstratā
29. Oh, how remarkable that both are endowed with knowledge and possess fierce valor! And how astonishing is Bhima's tremendous strength, as well as the mastery of weapons demonstrated by these two!
अहो वीर्यस्य सारत्वमहो सौष्ठवमेतयोः ।
स्थितावेतौ हि समरे कालान्तकयमोपमौ ॥३०॥
30. aho vīryasya sāratvamaho sauṣṭhavametayoḥ ,

30. Oh, what an essence of valor! Oh, what superb dexterity these two possess! Indeed, these two stand in battle resembling Kāla, Antaka, and Yama – the very embodiments of death.
रुद्रौ द्वाविव संभूतौ यथा द्वाविव भास्करौ ।
यमौ वा पुरुषव्याघ्रौ घोररूपाविमौ रणे ॥३१॥
31. rudrau dvāviva saṁbhūtau yathā dvāviva bhāskarau ,
yamau vā puruṣavyāghrau ghorarūpāvimau raṇe.

yamau vā puruṣavyāghrau ghorarūpau imau raṇe
31. imau puruṣavyāghrau raṇe dvau rudrau iva,
yathā dvau bhāskarau iva,
vā yamau ghorarūpau saṃbhūtau.
31. These two, formidable tigers among men (puruṣavyāghrau) in battle, appeared like two Rudras, or like two suns, or even like two Yamas, possessing terrifying forms.
श्रूयन्ते स्म तदा वाचः सिद्धानां वै मुहुर्मुहुः ।
सिंहनादश्च संजज्ञे समेतानां दिवौकसाम् ।
अद्भुतं चाप्यचिन्त्यं च दृष्ट्वा कर्म तयोर्मृधे ॥३२॥
32. śrūyante sma tadā vācaḥ siddhānāṁ vai muhurmuhuḥ ,
siṁhanādaśca saṁjajñe sametānāṁ divaukasām ,
adbhutaṁ cāpyacintyaṁ ca dṛṣṭvā karma tayormṛdhe.
32. śrūyante sma tadā vācaḥ siddhānām vai
muhurmuhuḥ siṃhanādaḥ ca saṃjajñe
sametānām divaukasām adbhutam ca api
acintyam ca dṛṣṭvā karma tayoḥ mṛdhe
32. tadā siddhānām vācaḥ vai muhurmuhuḥ śrūyante sma.
tayoḥ adbhutam ca acintyam ca karma mṛdhe dṛṣṭvā sametānām divaukasām ca siṃhanādaḥ saṃjajñe.
32. At that time, the words of the perfected beings (siddhas) were repeatedly heard. And a lion's roar arose from the assembled celestials, as they witnessed the wondrous and inconceivable deed of those two in battle.
तौ शूरौ समरे राजन्परस्परकृतागसौ ।
परस्परमुदैक्षेतां क्रोधादुद्वृत्य चक्षुषी ॥३३॥
33. tau śūrau samare rājanparasparakṛtāgasau ,
parasparamudaikṣetāṁ krodhādudvṛtya cakṣuṣī.

parasparam udaikṣetām krodhāt udvṛtya cakṣuṣī

33. O King, those two heroes, who had mutually wronged each other in battle, looked at each other, their eyes wide with anger.
क्रोधरक्तेक्षणौ तौ तु क्रोधात्प्रस्फुरिताधरौ ।
क्रोधात्संदष्टदशनौ संदष्टदशनच्छदौ ॥३४॥
34. krodharaktekṣaṇau tau tu krodhātprasphuritādharau ,
krodhātsaṁdaṣṭadaśanau saṁdaṣṭadaśanacchadau.

34. tau tu krodharaktekṣaṇau,

saṃdaṣṭadaśanacchadau (ca āsītām).
34. Indeed, those two had eyes red with anger, lips trembling from anger, teeth gnashed from anger, and lips bitten due to anger.
अन्योन्यं छादयन्तौ स्म शरवृष्ट्या महारथौ ।
शराम्बुधारौ समरे शस्त्रविद्युत्प्रकाशिनौ ॥३५॥
35. anyonyaṁ chādayantau sma śaravṛṣṭyā mahārathau ,
śarāmbudhārau samare śastravidyutprakāśinau.

35. The two great warriors, covering each other with a shower of arrows, shone in battle like lightning with their weapons, discharging streams of arrows like water.
तावन्योन्यं ध्वजौ विद्ध्वा सारथी च महारथौ ।
अन्योन्यस्य हयान्विद्ध्वा बिभिदाते परस्परम् ॥३६॥
36. tāvanyonyaṁ dhvajau viddhvā sārathī ca mahārathau ,
anyonyasya hayānviddhvā bibhidāte parasparam.

36. The two great warriors first pierced each other's banners and charioteers. Then, having pierced each other's horses, they proceeded to strike each other.
ततः क्रुद्धौ महाराज बाणौ गृह्य महाहवे ।
उभौ चिक्षिपतुस्तूर्णमन्योन्यस्य वधैषिणौ ॥३७॥
37. tataḥ kruddhau mahārāja bāṇau gṛhya mahāhave ,
ubhau cikṣipatustūrṇamanyonyasya vadhaiṣiṇau.

37. Then, O great king, both enraged warriors, intent on killing each other, quickly seized arrows in that great battle and hurled them.
तौ सायकौ महाराज द्योतमानौ चमूमुखे ।
आजघ्नाते समासाद्य वज्रवेगौ दुरासदौ ॥३८॥
38. tau sāyakau mahārāja dyotamānau camūmukhe ,
ājaghnāte samāsādya vajravegau durāsadau.

38. O great king, those two brilliant and irresistible arrows, possessing the speed of a thunderbolt, met and struck each other at the vanguard of the army.
तौ परस्परवेगाच्च शराभ्यां च भृशाहतौ ।
निपेततुर्महावीरौ स्वरथोपस्थयोस्तदा ॥३९॥
39. tau parasparavegācca śarābhyāṁ ca bhṛśāhatau ,
nipetaturmahāvīrau svarathopasthayostadā.

39. At that moment, those two great heroes, greatly wounded by the force of their encounter and by each other's arrows, fell down onto the floors of their respective chariots.
ततस्तु सारथिर्ज्ञात्वा द्रोणपुत्रमचेतनम् ।
अपोवाह रणाद्राजन्सर्वक्षत्रस्य पश्यतः ॥४०॥
40. tatastu sārathirjñātvā droṇaputramacetanam ,
apovāha raṇādrājansarvakṣatrasya paśyataḥ.

apovāha raṇāt rājan sarvakṣatrasya paśyataḥ

40. O King, then his charioteer, realizing that Drona's son (Aśvatthāman) was unconscious, drove him away from the battlefield as all the kṣatriyas (warriors) watched.
तथैव पाण्डवं राजन्विह्वलन्तं मुहुर्मुहुः ।
अपोवाह रथेनाजौ सारथिः शत्रुतापनम् ॥४१॥
41. tathaiva pāṇḍavaṁ rājanvihvalantaṁ muhurmuhuḥ ,
apovāha rathenājau sārathiḥ śatrutāpanam.
41. tatha eva pāṇḍavam rājan vihvalantam muhuḥ
muhuḥ apovāha rathena ājau sārathiḥ śatrutāpanam

41. O King, similarly, his charioteer (Kṛṣṇa) drove the Pāṇḍava (Arjuna), the tormentor of enemies, who was repeatedly reeling and overcome, away from the battle in his chariot.
