वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततो गच्छन्महाबाहुरेकोऽमात्यान्विसृज्य तान् ।
नापश्यदाश्रमे तस्मिंस्तमृषिं संशितव्रतम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato gacchanmahābāhureko'mātyānvisṛjya tān ,
nāpaśyadāśrame tasmiṁstamṛṣiṁ saṁśitavratam.
1. vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ gacchan mahābāhuḥ ekaḥ amātyān
visṛjya tān na apaśyat āśrame tasmin tam ṛṣim saṃśitavratam
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, the mighty-armed king, proceeding alone after dismissing his ministers, did not see the sage of firm vows in that hermitage.
सोऽपश्यमानस्तमृषिं शून्यं दृष्ट्वा तमाश्रमम् ।
उवाच क इहेत्युच्चैर्वनं संनादयन्निव ॥२॥
2. so'paśyamānastamṛṣiṁ śūnyaṁ dṛṣṭvā tamāśramam ,
uvāca ka ihetyuccairvanaṁ saṁnādayanniva.
2. saḥ apaśyamānaḥ tam ṛṣim śūnyam dṛṣṭvā tam āśramam
uvāca kaḥ iha iti uccaiḥ vanam saṃnādayan iva
2. Not seeing that sage, and finding the hermitage empty, he loudly exclaimed, "Who is here?" as if making the forest reverberate.
श्रुत्वाथ तस्य तं शब्दं कन्या श्रीरिव रूपिणी ।
निश्चक्रामाश्रमात्तस्मात्तापसीवेषधारिणी ॥३॥
3. śrutvātha tasya taṁ śabdaṁ kanyā śrīriva rūpiṇī ,
niścakrāmāśramāttasmāttāpasīveṣadhāriṇī.
3. śrutvā atha tasya tam śabdam kanyā śrīḥ iva rūpiṇī
niścakrāma āśramāt tasmāt tāpasīveṣadhāriṇī
3. Then, hearing his sound, a maiden, beautiful like the goddess Śrī and dressed as an ascetic woman, emerged from that hermitage.
सा तं दृष्ट्वैव राजानं दुःषन्तमसितेक्षणा ।
स्वागतं त इति क्षिप्रमुवाच प्रतिपूज्य च ॥४॥
4. sā taṁ dṛṣṭvaiva rājānaṁ duḥṣantamasitekṣaṇā ,
svāgataṁ ta iti kṣipramuvāca pratipūjya ca.
4. sā tam dṛṣṭvā eva rājānam duḥṣantam asitekṣaṇā
svāgatam te iti kṣipram uvāca pratipūjya ca
4. As soon as the dark-eyed maiden saw King Duṣyanta, she quickly welcomed him, saying, "Welcome to you!" after honoring him.
आसनेनार्चयित्वा च पाद्येनार्घ्येण चैव हि ।
पप्रच्छानामयं राजन्कुशलं च नराधिपम् ॥५॥
5. āsanenārcayitvā ca pādyenārghyeṇa caiva hi ,
papracchānāmayaṁ rājankuśalaṁ ca narādhipam.
5. āsanena arcayitvā ca pādyena arghyeṇa ca eva hi
papraccha anāmayam rājan kuśalam ca narādhipam
5. And after honoring the king with a seat, water for his feet, and an arghya offering, she asked him, "O King, are you well and prosperous?" (or simply, asked the king about his welfare and prosperity).
यथावदर्चयित्वा सा पृष्ट्वा चानामयं तदा ।
उवाच स्मयमानेव किं कार्यं क्रियतामिति ॥६॥
6. yathāvadarcayitvā sā pṛṣṭvā cānāmayaṁ tadā ,
uvāca smayamāneva kiṁ kāryaṁ kriyatāmiti.
6. yathāvat arcayitvā sā pṛṣṭvā ca anāmayam tadā
uvāca smayamānā iva kim kāryam kriyatām iti
6. After duly worshipping him and then inquiring about his well-being, she spoke, as if smiling, "What work should be done?"
तामब्रवीत्ततो राजा कन्यां मधुरभाषिणीम् ।
दृष्ट्वा सर्वानवद्याङ्गीं यथावत्प्रतिपूजितः ॥७॥
7. tāmabravīttato rājā kanyāṁ madhurabhāṣiṇīm ,
dṛṣṭvā sarvānavadyāṅgīṁ yathāvatpratipūjitaḥ.
7. tām abravīt tataḥ rājā kanyām madhurabhāṣiṇīm
dṛṣṭvā sarva-anavadyāṅgīm yathāvat pratipūjitaḥ
7. Then the king, after being properly honored and having seen that sweet-speaking girl whose body was flawless in every respect, spoke to her.
आगतोऽहं महाभागमृषिं कण्वमुपासितुम् ।
क्व गतो भगवान्भद्रे तन्ममाचक्ष्व शोभने ॥८॥
8. āgato'haṁ mahābhāgamṛṣiṁ kaṇvamupāsitum ,
kva gato bhagavānbhadre tanmamācakṣva śobhane.
8. āgataḥ aham mahābhāgam ṛṣim kaṇvam upāsitum kva
gataḥ bhagavān bhadre tat mama ācakṣva śobhane
8. I have come to attend upon the venerable sage Kaṇva. O auspicious and beautiful lady, please tell me where the revered one has gone.
शकुन्तलोवाच ।
गतः पिता मे भगवान्फलान्याहर्तुमाश्रमात् ।
मुहूर्तं संप्रतीक्षस्व द्रक्ष्यस्येनमिहागतम् ॥९॥
9. śakuntalovāca ,
gataḥ pitā me bhagavānphalānyāhartumāśramāt ,
muhūrtaṁ saṁpratīkṣasva drakṣyasyenamihāgatam.
9. śakuntalā uvāca gataḥ pitā me bhagavān phalāni āhartum
āśramāt muhūrtam sampratīkṣasva drakṣyasi enam iha āgatam
9. Śakuntalā replied, "My venerable father has gone from the hermitage to gather fruits. Please wait for a moment; you will see him when he returns here."
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
अपश्यमानस्तमृषिं तया चोक्तस्तथा नृपः ।
तां च दृष्ट्वा वरारोहां श्रीमतीं चारुहासिनीम् ॥१०॥
10. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
apaśyamānastamṛṣiṁ tayā coktastathā nṛpaḥ ,
tāṁ ca dṛṣṭvā varārohāṁ śrīmatīṁ cāruhāsinīm.
10. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca apaśyamānaḥ tam ṛṣim tayā ca uktaḥ
tathā nṛpaḥ tām ca dṛṣṭvā varārohām śrīmatīm cāruhāsinīm
10. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "The king, not seeing that sage and having been told thus by her, and having seen that glorious, sweetly smiling lady with beautiful hips..."
विभ्राजमानां वपुषा तपसा च दमेन च ।
रूपयौवनसंपन्नामित्युवाच महीपतिः ॥११॥
11. vibhrājamānāṁ vapuṣā tapasā ca damena ca ,
rūpayauvanasaṁpannāmityuvāca mahīpatiḥ.
11. vibhrājamānām vapuṣā tapasā ca damena ca
rūpayauvanasampannām iti uvāca mahīpatiḥ
11. The king spoke to her, who was radiant in form, glowing with austerity and self-control, and endowed with beauty and youth.
कासि कस्यासि सुश्रोणि किमर्थं चागता वनम् ।
एवंरूपगुणोपेता कुतस्त्वमसि शोभने ॥१२॥
12. kāsi kasyāsi suśroṇi kimarthaṁ cāgatā vanam ,
evaṁrūpaguṇopetā kutastvamasi śobhane.
12. kā asi kasyāḥ asi suśroṇi kimartham ca āgatā
vanam evamrūpaguṇopetā kutaḥ tvam asi śobhane
12. Who are you, and whose daughter are you, O beautiful lady? For what purpose have you come to this forest? From where do you hail, O beautiful one, possessed of such form and qualities?
दर्शनादेव हि शुभे त्वया मेऽपहृतं मनः ।
इच्छामि त्वामहं ज्ञातुं तन्ममाचक्ष्व शोभने ॥१३॥
13. darśanādeva hi śubhe tvayā me'pahṛtaṁ manaḥ ,
icchāmi tvāmahaṁ jñātuṁ tanmamācakṣva śobhane.
13. darśanāt eva hi śubhe tvayā me apahṛtam manaḥ
icchāmi tvām aham jñātum tat mama ācakṣva śobhane
13. O auspicious one, merely at the sight of you, my mind has been captivated by you. I wish to know you; therefore, tell me about yourself, O beautiful one.
एवमुक्ता तदा कन्या तेन राज्ञा तदाश्रमे ।
उवाच हसती वाक्यमिदं सुमधुराक्षरम् ॥१४॥
14. evamuktā tadā kanyā tena rājñā tadāśrame ,
uvāca hasatī vākyamidaṁ sumadhurākṣaram.
14. evam uktā tadā kanyā tena rājñā tadāśrame
uvāca hasatī vākyam idam sumadhurākṣaram
14. Thus addressed by that king in his hermitage, the maiden then spoke, laughing, these words in a very sweet voice.
कण्वष्याहं भगवतो दुःषन्त दुहिता मता ।
तपस्विनो धृतिमतो धर्मज्ञस्य यशस्विनः ॥१५॥
15. kaṇvaṣyāhaṁ bhagavato duḥṣanta duhitā matā ,
tapasvino dhṛtimato dharmajñasya yaśasvinaḥ.
15. kaṇvasya aham bhagavataḥ duḥṣanta duhitā matā
tapasvinaḥ dhṛtimataḥ dharmajñasya yaśasvinaḥ
15. O Duṣyanta, I am known as the daughter of the revered Sage Kaṇva, who is an ascetic, resolute, a knower of dharma, and renowned.
दुःषन्त उवाच ।
ऊर्ध्वरेता महाभागो भगवाँल्लोकपूजितः ।
चलेद्धि वृत्ताद्धर्मोऽपि न चलेत्संशितव्रतः ॥१६॥
16. duḥṣanta uvāca ,
ūrdhvaretā mahābhāgo bhagavāँllokapūjitaḥ ,
caleddhi vṛttāddharmo'pi na caletsaṁśitavrataḥ.
16. duṣyanta uvāca ūrdhvaretāḥ mahābhāgaḥ bhagavān loka-pūjitaḥ
calet hi vṛttāt dharmaḥ api na calet saṃśita-vrataḥ
16. Duṣyanta said: 'An illustrious, celibate ascetic, revered by the world, whose vows are firm, would never deviate, though dharma itself might waver from its course of conduct.'
कथं त्वं तस्य दुहिता संभूता वरवर्णिनी ।
संशयो मे महानत्र तं मे छेत्तुमिहार्हसि ॥१७॥
17. kathaṁ tvaṁ tasya duhitā saṁbhūtā varavarṇinī ,
saṁśayo me mahānatra taṁ me chettumihārhasi.
17. katham tvam tasya duhitā saṃbhūtā varavarṇinī
saṃśayaḥ me mahān atra tam me chettum iha arhasi
17. How is it that you, beautiful lady, became his daughter? I have a great doubt about this, and you should resolve it for me here.
शकुन्तलोवाच ।
यथायमागमो मह्यं यथा चेदमभूत्पुरा ।
शृणु राजन्यथातत्त्वं यथास्मि दुहिता मुनेः ॥१८॥
18. śakuntalovāca ,
yathāyamāgamo mahyaṁ yathā cedamabhūtpurā ,
śṛṇu rājanyathātattvaṁ yathāsmi duhitā muneḥ.
18. śakuntalā uvāca yathā ayam āgamaḥ mahyam yathā ca idam
abhūt purā śṛṇu rājan yathā-tattvam yathā asmi duhitā muneḥ
18. Śakuntalā said: 'Listen, O King, to the truth of how I came to know this, how this happened in the past, and how I am the daughter of the sage.'
ऋषिः कश्चिदिहागम्य मम जन्माभ्यचोदयत् ।
तस्मै प्रोवाच भगवान्यथा तच्छृणु पार्थिव ॥१९॥
19. ṛṣiḥ kaścidihāgamya mama janmābhyacodayat ,
tasmai provāca bhagavānyathā tacchṛṇu pārthiva.
19. ṛṣiḥ kaścit iha āgamya mama janma abhyacodayat
tasmai provāca bhagavān yathā tat śṛṇu pārthiva
19. A certain sage, having arrived here, caused my birth. O King, listen to how the revered one (Indra) spoke to him (Viśvāmitra) regarding that.
तप्यमानः किल पुरा विश्वामित्रो महत्तपः ।
सुभृशं तापयामास शक्रं सुरगणेश्वरम् ॥२०॥
20. tapyamānaḥ kila purā viśvāmitro mahattapaḥ ,
subhṛśaṁ tāpayāmāsa śakraṁ suragaṇeśvaram.
20. tapyamānaḥ kila purā viśvāmitraḥ mahat tapaḥ
subhṛśam tāpayāmāsa śakram sura-gaṇa-īśvaram
20. It is said that in ancient times, Viśvāmitra, while performing great tapas, intensely distressed Śakra (Indra), the lord of the hosts of gods.
तपसा दीप्तवीर्योऽयं स्थानान्मां च्यावयेदिति ।
भीतः पुरंदरस्तस्मान्मेनकामिदमब्रवीत् ॥२१॥
21. tapasā dīptavīryo'yaṁ sthānānmāṁ cyāvayediti ,
bhītaḥ puraṁdarastasmānmenakāmidamabravīt.
21. tapasā dīptavīryaḥ ayam sthānāt mām cyāvayet iti
bhītaḥ purandaraḥ tasmāt menakām idam abravīt
21. This one, whose power is blazing due to austerities, might displace me from my position—thinking thus, Purandara (Indra), frightened by him, said this to Menaka.
गुणैर्दिव्यैरप्सरसां मेनके त्वं विशिष्यसे ।
श्रेयो मे कुरु कल्याणि यत्त्वां वक्ष्यामि तच्छृणु ॥२२॥
22. guṇairdivyairapsarasāṁ menake tvaṁ viśiṣyase ,
śreyo me kuru kalyāṇi yattvāṁ vakṣyāmi tacchṛṇu.
22. guṇaiḥ divyaiḥ apsarasām menake tvam viśiṣyase
śreyaḥ me kuru kalyāṇi yat tvām vakṣyāmi tat śṛṇu
22. Menaka, you are distinguished among the Apsaras with your divine qualities. O auspicious one, do what is beneficial for me; listen to what I will tell you.
असावादित्यसंकाशो विश्वामित्रो महातपाः ।
तप्यमानस्तपो घोरं मम कम्पयते मनः ॥२३॥
23. asāvādityasaṁkāśo viśvāmitro mahātapāḥ ,
tapyamānastapo ghoraṁ mama kampayate manaḥ.
23. asau ādityasaṃkāśaḥ viśvāmitraḥ mahātapāḥ
tapyamānaḥ tapaḥ ghoram mama kampayate manaḥ
23. That Viśvāmitra, radiant as the sun and performing great austerities, is engaged in severe penance, and this shakes my mind.
मेनके तव भारोऽयं विश्वामित्रः सुमध्यमे ।
संशितात्मा सुदुर्धर्ष उग्रे तपसि वर्तते ॥२४॥
24. menake tava bhāro'yaṁ viśvāmitraḥ sumadhyame ,
saṁśitātmā sudurdharṣa ugre tapasi vartate.
24. menake tava bhāraḥ ayam viśvāmitraḥ sumadhyame
saṃśita-ātmā sudurdharṣaḥ ugre tapasi vartate
24. O Menaka, O slender-waisted one, this Viśvāmitra is your responsibility. With his mind disciplined and formidable, he is engaged in severe austerities.
स मां न च्यावयेत्स्थानात्तं वै गत्वा प्रलोभय ।
चर तस्य तपोविघ्नं कुरु मे प्रियमुत्तमम् ॥२५॥
25. sa māṁ na cyāvayetsthānāttaṁ vai gatvā pralobhaya ,
cara tasya tapovighnaṁ kuru me priyamuttamam.
25. saḥ mām na cyāvayet sthānāt tam vai gatvā pralobhaya
cara tasya tapovighnam kuru me priyam uttamam
25. So that he may not displace me from my position, you must go and entice him. Create an obstruction to his austerities and do this supreme favor for me.
रूपयौवनमाधुर्यचेष्टितस्मितभाषितैः ।
लोभयित्वा वरारोहे तपसः संनिवर्तय ॥२६॥
26. rūpayauvanamādhuryaceṣṭitasmitabhāṣitaiḥ ,
lobhayitvā varārohe tapasaḥ saṁnivartaya.
26. rūpayauvanamādhuryaceṣṭitasmitabhāṣitaiḥ
lobhayitvā varārohe tapasaḥ saṃnivartaya
26. O beautiful lady, having enticed him with your beauty, youth, charm, gestures, smiles, and words, divert him from his tapas.
मेनकोवाच ।
महातेजाः स भगवान्सदैव च महातपाः ।
कोपनश्च तथा ह्येनं जानाति भगवानपि ॥२७॥
27. menakovāca ,
mahātejāḥ sa bhagavānsadaiva ca mahātapāḥ ,
kopanaśca tathā hyenaṁ jānāti bhagavānapi.
27. menakā uvāca mahātejāḥ saḥ bhagavān sadā eva ca
mahātapāḥ kopanaḥ ca tathā hi enam jānāti bhagavān api
27. Menaka said: 'That venerable one possesses great energy and is always a great ascetic. He is also very wrathful, and indeed, even you, my lord (Indra), know him to be so.'
तेजसस्तपसश्चैव कोपस्य च महात्मनः ।
त्वमप्युद्विजसे यस्य नोद्विजेयमहं कथम् ॥२८॥
28. tejasastapasaścaiva kopasya ca mahātmanaḥ ,
tvamapyudvijase yasya nodvijeyamahaṁ katham.
28. tejasaḥ tapasaḥ ca eva kopasya ca mahātmanaḥ
tvam api udvijase yasya na udvijeya aham katham
28. Even you tremble on account of the energy, tapas, and wrath of that great soul. How then should I not tremble?
महाभागं वसिष्ठं यः पुत्रैरिष्टैर्व्ययोजयत् ।
क्षत्रे जातश्च यः पूर्वमभवद्ब्राह्मणो बलात् ॥२९॥
29. mahābhāgaṁ vasiṣṭhaṁ yaḥ putrairiṣṭairvyayojayat ,
kṣatre jātaśca yaḥ pūrvamabhavadbrāhmaṇo balāt.
29. mahābhāgaṃ vasiṣṭhaṃ yaḥ putraiḥ iṣṭaiḥ vyayojayat
kṣatre jātaḥ ca yaḥ pūrvam abhavat brāhmaṇaḥ balāt
29. He (Viśvāmitra) who separated the venerable Vasiṣṭha from his beloved sons, and who, though born a kṣatriya, previously became a Brahmin by his own power.
शौचार्थं यो नदीं चक्रे दुर्गमां बहुभिर्जलैः ।
यां तां पुण्यतमां लोके कौशिकीति विदुर्जनाः ॥३०॥
30. śaucārthaṁ yo nadīṁ cakre durgamāṁ bahubhirjalaiḥ ,
yāṁ tāṁ puṇyatamāṁ loke kauśikīti vidurjanāḥ.
30. śaucārthaṃ yaḥ nadīṃ cakre durgamāṃ bahubhiḥ jalaiḥ
yāṃ tāṃ puṇyatamāṃ loke kauśikī iti viduḥ janāḥ
30. He (Viśvāmitra) who, for the sake of purification, created a river, made impassable by abundant waters—that very river which people in the world know as the most sacred Kauśikī.
बभार यत्रास्य पुरा काले दुर्गे महात्मनः ।
दारान्मतङ्गो धर्मात्मा राजर्षिर्व्याधतां गतः ॥३१॥
31. babhāra yatrāsya purā kāle durge mahātmanaḥ ,
dārānmataṅgo dharmātmā rājarṣirvyādhatāṁ gataḥ.
31. babhāra yatra asya purā kāle durge mahātmanaḥ
dārān mataṅgaḥ dharmātmā rājarṣiḥ vyādhatām gataḥ
31. Where, in ancient times, the great-souled royal sage Matanga, who had become a hunter, supported his wives in a difficult situation.
अतीतकाले दुर्भिक्षे यत्रैत्य पुनराश्रमम् ।
मुनिः पारेति नद्या वै नाम चक्रे तदा प्रभुः ॥३२॥
32. atītakāle durbhikṣe yatraitya punarāśramam ,
muniḥ pāreti nadyā vai nāma cakre tadā prabhuḥ.
32. atītakāle durbhikṣe yatra etya punaḥ āśramam
muniḥ pārā iti nadyāḥ vai nāma cakre tadā prabhuḥ
32. Where, in ancient times during a famine, the powerful sage, having returned to his hermitage, then indeed named that river 'Pārā'.
मतङ्गं याजयां चक्रे यत्र प्रीतमनाः स्वयम् ।
त्वं च सोमं भयाद्यस्य गतः पातुं शुरेश्वर ॥३३॥
33. mataṅgaṁ yājayāṁ cakre yatra prītamanāḥ svayam ,
tvaṁ ca somaṁ bhayādyasya gataḥ pātuṁ śureśvara.
33. mataṅgam yājayām cakre yatra prītamanāḥ svayam
tvam ca somam bhayāt yasya gataḥ pātum sureśvara
33. Where he himself, with a pleased mind, caused Matanga to perform a yagya; and you, O Lord of gods, out of fear of whom, went to drink Soma.
अति नक्षत्रवंशांश्च क्रुद्धो नक्षत्रसंपदा ।
प्रति श्रवणपूर्वाणि नक्षत्राणि ससर्ज यः ॥३४॥
34. ati nakṣatravaṁśāṁśca kruddho nakṣatrasaṁpadā ,
prati śravaṇapūrvāṇi nakṣatrāṇi sasarja yaḥ.
34. ati nakṣatravamśān ca kruddhaḥ nakṣatrasampadā
prati śravaṇapūrvāṇi nakṣatrāṇi sasarja yaḥ
34. Who, enraged by the multitude of constellations, created new constellations, beginning with Śravaṇa, surpassing even the existing celestial lineages.
एतानि यस्य कर्माणि तस्याहं भृशमुद्विजे ।
यथा मां न दहेत्क्रुद्धस्तथाज्ञापय मां विभो ॥३५॥
35. etāni yasya karmāṇi tasyāhaṁ bhṛśamudvije ,
yathā māṁ na dahetkruddhastathājñāpaya māṁ vibho.
35. etāni yasya karmāṇi tasya aham bhṛśam udvije yathā
mām na dahet kruddhaḥ tathā ājñāpaya mām vibho
35. I am greatly terrified by one whose actions are such. O Lord, instruct me so that he, when enraged, may not burn me.
तेजसा निर्दहेल्लोकान्कम्पयेद्धरणीं पदा ।
संक्षिपेच्च महामेरुं तूर्णमावर्तयेत्तथा ॥३६॥
36. tejasā nirdahellokānkampayeddharaṇīṁ padā ,
saṁkṣipecca mahāmeruṁ tūrṇamāvartayettathā.
36. tejasā nirdhet lokān kampayet dharaṇīm padā
saṃkṣipet ca mahāmerum tūrṇam āvartayet tathā
36. He could burn the worlds with his splendor, shake the earth with his foot, and swiftly contract and revolve the great Mount Meru.
तादृशं तपसा युक्तं प्रदीप्तमिव पावकम् ।
कथमस्मद्विधा बाला जितेन्द्रियमभिस्पृशेत् ॥३७॥
37. tādṛśaṁ tapasā yuktaṁ pradīptamiva pāvakam ,
kathamasmadvidhā bālā jitendriyamabhispṛśet.
37. tādṛśam tapasā yuktam pradīptam iva pāvakam
katham asmadvidhā bālā jitendriyam abhisspṛśet
37. How can a young girl like me touch such a one, who is endowed with tapas, blazing like fire, and has mastered his senses?
हुताशनमुखं दीप्तं सूर्यचन्द्राक्षितारकम् ।
कालजिह्वं सुरश्रेष्ठ कथमस्मद्विधा स्पृशेत् ॥३८॥
38. hutāśanamukhaṁ dīptaṁ sūryacandrākṣitārakam ,
kālajihvaṁ suraśreṣṭha kathamasmadvidhā spṛśet.
38. hutāśanamukham dīptam sūryacandrākṣitārakam
kālajihvam suraśreṣṭha katham asmadvidhā spṛśet
38. O best among the gods, how can one like me touch him, whose mouth is fire, who is radiant, whose eyes are the sun, moon, and stars, and whose tongue is Time?
यमश्च सोमश्च महर्षयश्च साध्या विश्वे वालखिल्याश्च सर्वे ।
एतेऽपि यस्योद्विजन्ते प्रभावात्कस्मात्तस्मान्मादृशी नोद्विजेत ॥३९॥
39. yamaśca somaśca maharṣayaśca; sādhyā viśve vālakhilyāśca sarve ,
ete'pi yasyodvijante prabhāvā;tkasmāttasmānmādṛśī nodvijeta.
39. yamaḥ ca somaḥ ca maharṣayaḥ ca
sādhyāḥ viśve vālikhilyāḥ ca sarve
ete api yasya udvijante prabhāvāt
kasmāt tasmāt mādṛśī na udvijeta
39. Yama, Soma, the great sages, all the Sādhyas and Vālikhilyas—even these are agitated by his power. Why, then, should one like me not be agitated by him?
त्वयैवमुक्ता च कथं समीपमृषेर्न गच्छेयमहं सुरेन्द्र ।
रक्षां तु मे चिन्तय देवराज यथा त्वदर्थं रक्षिताहं चरेयम् ॥४०॥
40. tvayaivamuktā ca kathaṁ samīpa;mṛṣerna gaccheyamahaṁ surendra ,
rakṣāṁ tu me cintaya devarāja; yathā tvadarthaṁ rakṣitāhaṁ careyam.
40. tvayā evam uktā ca katham samīpam
ṛṣeḥ na gaccheyam aham surendra
rakṣām tu me cintaya devarāja yathā
tvadartham rakṣitā aham careyam
40. And after being spoken to thus by you, O king of gods, how can I not approach the sage? But you, O king of gods, must ensure my protection, so that I, being protected, may accomplish your purpose.
कामं तु मे मारुतस्तत्र वासः प्रक्रीडिताया विवृणोतु देव ।
भवेच्च मे मन्मथस्तत्र कार्ये सहायभूतस्तव देवप्रसादात् ॥४१॥
41. kāmaṁ tu me mārutastatra vāsaḥ; prakrīḍitāyā vivṛṇotu deva ,
bhavecca me manmathastatra kārye; sahāyabhūtastava devaprasādāt.
41. kāmam tu me mārutaḥ tatra vāsaḥ
prakrīḍitāyāḥ vivṛṇotu deva |
bhavet ca me manmathaḥ tatra
kārye sahāyabhūtaḥ tava devaprasādāt
41. O god, may the wind god indeed uncover my garment there as I amuse myself. And may Kama become my helper in this endeavor, by your divine grace.
वनाच्च वायुः सुरभिः प्रवायेत्तस्मिन्काले तमृषिं लोभयन्त्याः ।
तथेत्युक्त्वा विहिते चैव तस्मिंस्ततो ययौ साश्रमं कौशिकस्य ॥४२॥
42. vanācca vāyuḥ surabhiḥ pravāye;ttasminkāle tamṛṣiṁ lobhayantyāḥ ,
tathetyuktvā vihite caiva tasmiṁ;stato yayau sāśramaṁ kauśikasya.
42. vanāt ca vāyuḥ surabhiḥ pravāyet
tasmin kāle tam ṛṣim lobhayantyāḥ |
tathā iti uktvā vihite ca eva tasmin
tataḥ yayau sa-āśramam kauśikasya
42. And may a fragrant wind blow from the forest at that time, as she entices that sage. Having said 'So be it,' and that having been accomplished, she then went to Vishvamitra's hermitage.
