युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
न मां प्रीणयते राज्यं त्वय्येवं दुःखिते नृप ।
धिङ्मामस्तु सुदुर्बुद्धिं राज्यसक्तं प्रमादिनम् ॥१॥
1. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
na māṁ prīṇayate rājyaṁ tvayyevaṁ duḥkhite nṛpa ,
dhiṅmāmastu sudurbuddhiṁ rājyasaktaṁ pramādinam.

nṛpa dhik mām astu sudurbuddhim rājyasaktam pramādinam
1. Yudhishthira said: "The kingdom does not please me, O King, while you are in such distress. Shame upon me, the extremely foolish, negligent one, who is attached to this kingdom."
योऽहं भवन्तं दुःखार्तमुपवासकृशं नृप ।
यताहारं क्षितिशयं नाविन्दं भ्रातृभिः सह ॥२॥
2. yo'haṁ bhavantaṁ duḥkhārtamupavāsakṛśaṁ nṛpa ,
yatāhāraṁ kṣitiśayaṁ nāvindaṁ bhrātṛbhiḥ saha.
2. yaḥ aham bhavantam duḥkhārtam upavāsakṛśam nṛpa
yatāhāram kṣitiśayam na avindam bhrātṛbhiḥ saha
2. O King, how is it that I, along with my brothers, did not realize your state: afflicted by sorrow, emaciated by fasting, with a restricted diet, and lying on the bare ground?
अहोऽस्मि वञ्चितो मूढो भवता गूढबुद्धिना ।
विश्वासयित्वा पूर्वं मां यदिदं दुःखमश्नुथाः ॥३॥
3. aho'smi vañcito mūḍho bhavatā gūḍhabuddhinā ,
viśvāsayitvā pūrvaṁ māṁ yadidaṁ duḥkhamaśnuthāḥ.
3. aho asmi vañcitaḥ mūḍhaḥ bhavatā gūḍhabuddhinā
viśvāsayitvā pūrvam mām yat idam duḥkham aśnuthāḥ
3. Alas, I am deceived and foolish, (deceived) by you, whose intentions were concealed, who, after having first reassured me, now experiences this sorrow.
किं मे राज्येन भोगैर्वा किं यज्ञैः किं सुखेन वा ।
यस्य मे त्वं महीपाल दुःखान्येतान्यवाप्तवान् ॥४॥
4. kiṁ me rājyena bhogairvā kiṁ yajñaiḥ kiṁ sukhena vā ,
yasya me tvaṁ mahīpāla duḥkhānyetānyavāptavān.
4. kim me rājyena bhogaiḥ vā kim yajñaiḥ kim sukhena
vā yasya me tvam mahīpāla duḥkhāni etāni avāptavān
4. What is this kingdom to me, or enjoyments? What are (Vedic rituals (yajña))? What is happiness (sukha) to me, O protector of the earth, for whom you have attained these sorrows?
पीडितं चापि जानामि राज्यमात्मानमेव च ।
अनेन वचसा तुभ्यं दुःखितस्य जनेश्वर ॥५॥
5. pīḍitaṁ cāpi jānāmi rājyamātmānameva ca ,
anena vacasā tubhyaṁ duḥkhitasya janeśvara.
5. pīḍitam ca api jānāmi rājyam ātmānam eva ca
anena vacasā tubhyam duḥkhitasya janeśvara
5. janeśvara,
duḥkhitasya tubhyam anena vacasā,
api ca rājyam ātmānam eva pīḍitam jānāmi ca.
5. O ruler of people (janeśvara), I know that both the kingdom and myself (ātman) are afflicted. I speak these words to you, who are distressed.
भवान्पिता भवान्माता भवान्नः परमो गुरुः ।
भवता विप्रहीणा हि क्व नु तिष्ठामहे वयम् ॥६॥
6. bhavānpitā bhavānmātā bhavānnaḥ paramo guruḥ ,
bhavatā viprahīṇā hi kva nu tiṣṭhāmahe vayam.
6. bhavān pitā bhavān mātā bhavān naḥ paramaḥ guruḥ
| bhavatā viprahīṇāḥ hi kva nu tiṣṭhāmahe vayam
6. bhavān pitā,
bhavān mātā,
bhavān naḥ paramaḥ guruḥ.
hi,
bhavatā viprahīṇāḥ vayam nu kva tiṣṭhāmahe?
6. You are our father, you are our mother, and you are our supreme spiritual teacher (guru). Indeed, separated from you, where can we possibly remain?
औरसो भवतः पुत्रो युयुत्सुर्नृपसत्तम ।
अस्तु राजा महाराज यं चान्यं मन्यते भवान् ॥७॥
7. auraso bhavataḥ putro yuyutsurnṛpasattama ,
astu rājā mahārāja yaṁ cānyaṁ manyate bhavān.
7. aurasaḥ bhavataḥ putraḥ yuyutsuḥ nṛpasattama |
astu rājā mahārāja yam ca anyam manyate bhavān
7. nṛpasattama,
mahārāja,
yuyutsuḥ bhavataḥ aurasaḥ putraḥ.
ca yam anyam bhavān manyate rājā astu.
7. O best of kings, O great king, Yuyutsu is your natural-born son. And let any other person whom you deem fit also become king.
अहं वनं गमिष्यामि भवान्राज्यं प्रशास्त्विदम् ।
न मामयशसा दग्धं भूयस्त्वं दग्धुमर्हसि ॥८॥
8. ahaṁ vanaṁ gamiṣyāmi bhavānrājyaṁ praśāstvidam ,
na māmayaśasā dagdhaṁ bhūyastvaṁ dagdhumarhasi.
8. aham vanam gamiṣyāmi bhavān rājyam praśāstu idam |
na mām ayaśasā dagdham bhūyaḥ tvam dagdhum arhasi
8. aham vanam gamiṣyāmi.
bhavān idam rājyam praśāstu.
tvam,
ayaśasā dagdham mām,
bhūyaḥ dagdhum na arhasi.
8. I shall go to the forest. May you rule this kingdom. You should not burn me again, as I am already scorched by dishonor.
नाहं राजा भवान्राजा भवता परवानहम् ।
कथं गुरुं त्वां धर्मज्ञमनुज्ञातुमिहोत्सहे ॥९॥
9. nāhaṁ rājā bhavānrājā bhavatā paravānaham ,
kathaṁ guruṁ tvāṁ dharmajñamanujñātumihotsahe.
9. na aham rājā bhavān rājā bhavatā paravān aham |
katham gurum tvām dharma-jñam anujñātum iha utsahe
9. aham rājā na,
bhavān rājā,
aham bhavatā paravān.
iha dharma-jñam tvām gurum anujñātum katham utsahe?
9. I am no king; you are the king. I am under your authority. How then can I presume to command you, my preceptor (guru) and knower of natural law (dharma)?
न मन्युर्हृदि नः कश्चिद्दुर्योधनकृतेऽनघ ।
भवितव्यं तथा तद्धि वयं ते चैव मोहिताः ॥१०॥
10. na manyurhṛdi naḥ kaścidduryodhanakṛte'nagha ,
bhavitavyaṁ tathā taddhi vayaṁ te caiva mohitāḥ.
10. na manyuḥ hṛdi naḥ kaścit duryodhana-kṛte anagha
| bhavitavyam tathā tat hi vayam te ca eva mohitāḥ
10. anagha,
duryodhana-kṛte naḥ hṛdi kaścit manyuḥ na.
tat hi tathā bhavitavyam.
vayam te ca eva mohitāḥ.
10. O sinless one, we hold no anger in our hearts at all because of Duryodhana. Indeed, it was destined to happen that way, and both we and they were equally deluded.
वयं हि पुत्रा भवतो यथा दुर्योधनादयः ।
गान्धारी चैव कुन्ती च निर्विशेषे मते मम ॥११॥
11. vayaṁ hi putrā bhavato yathā duryodhanādayaḥ ,
gāndhārī caiva kuntī ca nirviśeṣe mate mama.
11. vayam hi putrāḥ bhavataḥ yathā duryodhana-ādayaḥ
| gāndhārī ca eva kuntī ca nirviśeṣe mate mama
11. vayam hi bhavataḥ putrāḥ,
yathā duryodhana-ādayaḥ.
mama mate gāndhārī ca kuntī ca eva nirviśeṣe.
11. Indeed, we are your sons, just like Duryodhana and the others. In my estimation, there is no distinction between Gandhari and Kunti.
स मां त्वं यदि राजेन्द्र परित्यज्य गमिष्यसि ।
पृष्ठतस्त्वानुयास्यामि सत्येनात्मानमालभे ॥१२॥
12. sa māṁ tvaṁ yadi rājendra parityajya gamiṣyasi ,
pṛṣṭhatastvānuyāsyāmi satyenātmānamālabhe.
12. sa mām tvam yadi rājendra parityajya gamiṣyasi |
pṛṣṭhataḥ tvā anuyāsyāmi satyena ātmānam ārabhe
12. rājendra,
sa tvam yadi mām parityajya gamiṣyasi,
pṛṣṭhataḥ tvā anuyāsyāmi.
satyena ātmānam ārabhe.
12. Therefore, O lord of kings, if you depart abandoning me, I will follow you from behind. I vow by my very self (ātman) to do so.
इयं हि वसुसंपूर्णा मही सागरमेखला ।
भवता विप्रहीणस्य न मे प्रीतिकरी भवेत् ॥१३॥
13. iyaṁ hi vasusaṁpūrṇā mahī sāgaramekhalā ,
bhavatā viprahīṇasya na me prītikarī bhavet.
13. iyam hi vasusaṃpūrṇā mahī sāgaramekhalā
bhavatā viprahīṇasya na me prītikari bhavet
13. Indeed, this earth, though filled with riches and girdled by the ocean, will not be pleasing to me if I am separated from you.
भवदीयमिदं सर्वं शिरसा त्वां प्रसादये ।
त्वदधीनाः स्म राजेन्द्र व्येतु ते मानसो ज्वरः ॥१४॥
14. bhavadīyamidaṁ sarvaṁ śirasā tvāṁ prasādaye ,
tvadadhīnāḥ sma rājendra vyetu te mānaso jvaraḥ.
14. bhavadīyam idam sarvam śirasā tvām prasādaye
tvatadhīnāḥ sma rājanindra vyetu te mānasaḥ jvaraḥ
14. All this belongs to you; I bow my head to seek your grace. We are completely dependent on you, O King of Kings. May your mental anguish be dispelled.
भवितव्यमनुप्राप्तं मन्ये त्वां तज्जनाधिप ।
दिष्ट्या शुश्रूषमाणस्त्वां मोक्ष्यामि मनसो ज्वरम् ॥१५॥
15. bhavitavyamanuprāptaṁ manye tvāṁ tajjanādhipa ,
diṣṭyā śuśrūṣamāṇastvāṁ mokṣyāmi manaso jvaram.
15. bhavitavyam anuprāptam manye tvām tat janādhipa
diṣṭyā śuśrūṣamāṇaḥ tvām mokṣyāmi manasaḥ jvaram
15. O lord of people, I believe that what was destined to happen has now befallen you. Fortunately, by serving you, I shall free myself from the anguish of my mind.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
तापस्ये मे मनस्तात वर्तते कुरुनन्दन ।
उचितं हि कुलेऽस्माकमरण्यगमनं प्रभो ॥१६॥
16. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
tāpasye me manastāta vartate kurunandana ,
ucitaṁ hi kule'smākamaraṇyagamanaṁ prabho.
16. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca tāpasye me manaḥ tāta vartate
kurunandana ucitam hi kule asmākam araṇyagamanam prabho
16. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: 'My mind, dear son, is inclined towards an ascetic life, O delight of the Kurus. Indeed, for our family, O lord, resorting to the forest is the proper course of action.'
चिरमस्म्युषितः पुत्र चिरं शुश्रूषितस्त्वया ।
वृद्धं मामभ्यनुज्ञातुं त्वमर्हसि जनाधिप ॥१७॥
17. ciramasmyuṣitaḥ putra ciraṁ śuśrūṣitastvayā ,
vṛddhaṁ māmabhyanujñātuṁ tvamarhasi janādhipa.
17. ciram asmi uṣitaḥ putra ciram śuśrūṣitaḥ tvayā
vṛddham mām abhyanujñātum tvam arhasi janādhipa
17. putra janādhipa,
aham ciram uṣitaḥ asmi,
ca tvayā ciram śuśrūṣitaḥ (asmi).
tvam vṛddham mām abhyanujñātum arhasi.
17. O son, I have resided here for a long time, and you have served me for a long time. O lord of men, you should now grant permission to me, who is old.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
इत्युक्त्वा धर्मराजानं वेपमानः कृताञ्जलिम् ।
उवाच वचनं राजा धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः ॥१८॥
18. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
ityuktvā dharmarājānaṁ vepamānaḥ kṛtāñjalim ,
uvāca vacanaṁ rājā dhṛtarāṣṭro'mbikāsutaḥ.
18. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca iti uktvā dharmarājānam vepamānaḥ
kṛtāñjalim uvāca vacanam rājā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ ambikāsutaḥ
18. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca.
iti dharmarājānam uktvā vepamānaḥ kṛtāñjalim rājā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ ambikāsutaḥ vacanam uvāca.
18. Vaiśampāyana said: Having thus spoken to Yudhiṣṭhira, the king (dharma-rāja), Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the son of Ambikā, trembling and with folded hands, spoke these words.
संजयं च महामात्रं कृपं चापि महारथम् ।
अनुनेतुमिहेच्छामि भवद्भिः पृथिवीपतिम् ॥१९॥
19. saṁjayaṁ ca mahāmātraṁ kṛpaṁ cāpi mahāratham ,
anunetumihecchāmi bhavadbhiḥ pṛthivīpatim.
19. saṃjayam ca mahāmātram kṛpam ca api mahāratham
anunetum iha icchāmi bhavadbhiḥ pṛthivīpatim
19. iha bhavadbhiḥ saṃjayam mahāmātram ca kṛpam
mahāratham ca api pṛthivīpatim anunetum icchāmi
19. Here, I desire that you all help me persuade Sañjaya, the great minister, Kṛpa, the great charioteer, and also the lord of the earth (Yudhiṣṭhira).
ग्लायते मे मनो हीदं मुखं च परिशुष्यति ।
वयसा च प्रकृष्टेन वाग्व्यायामेन चैव हि ॥२०॥
20. glāyate me mano hīdaṁ mukhaṁ ca pariśuṣyati ,
vayasā ca prakṛṣṭena vāgvyāyāmena caiva hi.
20. glāyate me manaḥ hi idam mukham ca pariśuṣyati
vayasā ca prakṛṣṭena vāgvyāyāmena ca eva hi
20. hi idam me manaḥ glāyate,
ca mukham pariśuṣyati.
ca prakṛṣṭena vayasā ca vāgvyāyāmena eva hi.
20. Indeed, this mind of mine becomes weary, and my face completely dries up, due to advanced age and the exertion of continuous speech.
इत्युक्त्वा स तु धर्मात्मा वृद्धो राजा कुरूद्वहः ।
गान्धारीं शिश्रिये धीमान्सहसैव गतासुवत् ॥२१॥
21. ityuktvā sa tu dharmātmā vṛddho rājā kurūdvahaḥ ,
gāndhārīṁ śiśriye dhīmānsahasaiva gatāsuvat.
21. iti uktvā saḥ tu dharmātmā vṛddhaḥ rājā kurūdvahaḥ
gāndhārīm śiśriye dhīmān sahasā eva gatāsuvat
21. saḥ tu dhīmān dharmātmā vṛddhaḥ rājā kurūdvahaḥ
iti uktvā sahasā eva gatāsuvat gāndhārīm śiśriye
21. Having thus spoken, that wise, old king, whose nature was righteous (dharmātmā) and who was the leader of the Kurus, suddenly leaned upon Gandhari as if he were lifeless.
तं तु दृष्ट्वा तथासीनं निश्चेष्टं कुरुपार्थिवम् ।
आर्तिं राजा ययौ तूर्णं कौन्तेयः परवीरहा ॥२२॥
22. taṁ tu dṛṣṭvā tathāsīnaṁ niśceṣṭaṁ kurupārthivam ,
ārtiṁ rājā yayau tūrṇaṁ kaunteyaḥ paravīrahā.
22. tam tu dṛṣṭvā tathā āsīnam niśceṣṭam kurupārthivam
ārtim rājā yayau tūrṇam kaunteyaḥ paravīrahā
22. kaunteyaḥ paravīrahā rājā tam niśceṣṭam tathā
āsīnam kurupārthivam dṛṣṭvā tūrṇam ārtim yayau
22. But having seen that Kuru king thus seated and motionless, King Yudhishthira (kaunteya), the slayer of hostile heroes, quickly fell into distress.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
यस्य नागसहस्रेण दशसंख्येन वै बलम् ।
सोऽयं नारीमुपाश्रित्य शेते राजा गतासुवत् ॥२३॥
23. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
yasya nāgasahasreṇa daśasaṁkhyena vai balam ,
so'yaṁ nārīmupāśritya śete rājā gatāsuvat.
23. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca yasya nāgasahasreṇa daśasaṃkhyena
vai balam saḥ ayam nārīm upāśritya śete rājā gatāsuvat
23. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca yasya balam daśasaṃkhyena nāgasahasreṇa vai,
saḥ ayam rājā nārīm upāśritya gatāsuvat śete
23. Yudhishthira said: 'That king, whose strength was indeed equal to ten thousand elephants, now lies down having resorted to a woman, as if lifeless.'
आयसी प्रतिमा येन भीमसेनस्य वै पुरा ।
चूर्णीकृता बलवता स बलार्थी श्रितः स्त्रियम् ॥२४॥
24. āyasī pratimā yena bhīmasenasya vai purā ,
cūrṇīkṛtā balavatā sa balārthī śritaḥ striyam.
24. āyasī pratimā yena bhīmasenasya vai purā
cūrṇīkṛtā balavatā saḥ balārthī śritaḥ striyam
24. yena balavatā purā bhīmasenasya āyasī pratimā vai cūrṇīkṛtā,
saḥ balārthī striyam śritaḥ
24. He, by whom an iron statue of Bhimasena was indeed crushed in the past by his powerful strength, that powerful one (balārthī) now relies upon a woman.
धिगस्तु मामधर्मज्ञं धिग्बुद्धिं धिक्च मे श्रुतम् ।
यत्कृते पृथिवीपालः शेतेऽयमतथोचितः ॥२५॥
25. dhigastu māmadharmajñaṁ dhigbuddhiṁ dhikca me śrutam ,
yatkṛte pṛthivīpālaḥ śete'yamatathocitaḥ.
25. dhik astu mām adharmajñam dhik buddhim dhik ca me
śrutam yat kṛte pṛthivīpālaḥ śete ayam atathocitaḥ
25. mām adharmajñam dhik astu buddhim dhik ca me śrutam
dhik yat kṛte ayam pṛthivīpālaḥ atathocitaḥ śete
25. Shame upon me, who is ignorant of what is right (dharma)! Shame upon my intellect, and shame upon my learning, because of me this protector of the earth lies in an unfitting state.
अहमप्युपवत्स्यामि यथैवायं गुरुर्मम ।
यदि राजा न भुङ्क्तेऽयं गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ॥२६॥
26. ahamapyupavatsyāmi yathaivāyaṁ gururmama ,
yadi rājā na bhuṅkte'yaṁ gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī.
26. aham api upavatsyāmi yathā eva ayam guruḥ mama
yadi rājā na bhuṅkte ayam gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī
26. aham api upavatsyāmi yathā eva ayam mama guruḥ
yadi ayam rājā na bhuṅkte ca yaśasvinī gāndhārī
26. I too shall fast, just like this preceptor (guru) of mine. If this king does not eat, and the glorious Gāndhārī also (does not eat).
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततोऽस्य पाणिना राजा जलशीतेन पाण्डवः ।
उरो मुखं च शनकैः पर्यमार्जत धर्मवित् ॥२७॥
27. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tato'sya pāṇinā rājā jalaśītena pāṇḍavaḥ ,
uro mukhaṁ ca śanakaiḥ paryamārjata dharmavit.
27. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ asya pāṇinā rājā jalaśītena
pāṇḍavaḥ uraḥ mukham ca śanakaiḥ paryamārjat dharmavit
27. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca tataḥ dharmavit rājā pāṇḍavaḥ
jalaśītena pāṇinā asya uraḥ ca mukham śanakaiḥ paryamārjat
27. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, King Yudhiṣṭhira, the knower of proper conduct (dharma), gently wiped his (Dhṛtarāṣṭra's) chest and face slowly with his hand, which was cool with water.
तेन रत्नौषधिमता पुण्येन च सुगन्धिना ।
पाणिस्पर्शेन राज्ञस्तु राजा संज्ञामवाप ह ॥२८॥
28. tena ratnauṣadhimatā puṇyena ca sugandhinā ,
pāṇisparśena rājñastu rājā saṁjñāmavāpa ha.
28. tena ratnauṣadhimatā puṇyena ca sugandhinā
pāṇisparśena rājñaḥ tu rājā saṃjñām avāpa ha
28. rājñaḥ tena ratnauṣadhimatā ca puṇyena
sugandhinā pāṇisparśena tu rājā saṃjñām avāpa ha
28. Indeed, by that sacred, fragrant touch of King Yudhiṣṭhira's hand, which was imbued with the power of jewels and herbs, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra regained consciousness.
