कर्ण उवाच ।
दुर्योधन तव प्रज्ञा न सम्यगिति मे मतिः ।
न ह्युपायेन ते शक्याः पाण्डवाः कुरुनन्दन ॥१॥
1. karṇa uvāca ,
duryodhana tava prajñā na samyagiti me matiḥ ,
na hyupāyena te śakyāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ kurunandana.

1. Karṇa said: "O Duryodhana, I believe your judgment is not sound. Indeed, O delight of the Kurus, the Pāṇḍavas cannot be conquered by your stratagems."
पूर्वमेव हि ते सूक्ष्मैरुपायैर्यतितास्त्वया ।
निग्रहीतुं यदा वीर शकिता न तदा त्वया ॥२॥
2. pūrvameva hi te sūkṣmairupāyairyatitāstvayā ,
nigrahītuṁ yadā vīra śakitā na tadā tvayā.
2. pūrvam eva hi te sūkṣmaiḥ upāyaiḥ yatitāḥ tvayā
nigrahītum yadā vīra śakitāḥ na tadā tvayā
2. Indeed, O hero, you had already attempted to restrain them with subtle means, but you were unable to do so then.
इहैव वर्तमानास्ते समीपे तव पार्थिव ।
अजातपक्षाः शिशवः शकिता नैव बाधितुम् ॥३॥
3. ihaiva vartamānāste samīpe tava pārthiva ,
ajātapakṣāḥ śiśavaḥ śakitā naiva bādhitum.
3. iha eva vartamānāḥ te samīpe tava pārthiva
ajātapakṣāḥ śiśavaḥ śakitāḥ na eva bādhitum
3. O king, even when they were present right here, near you, like unfledged chicks, you were utterly unable to harm them.
जातपक्षा विदेशस्था विवृद्धाः सर्वशोऽद्य ते ।
नोपायसाध्याः कौन्तेया ममैषा मतिरच्युत ॥४॥
4. jātapakṣā videśasthā vivṛddhāḥ sarvaśo'dya te ,
nopāyasādhyāḥ kaunteyā mamaiṣā matiracyuta.
4. jātapakṣāḥ videśasthāḥ vivṛddhāḥ sarvaśaḥ adya te
na upāyasādhyāḥ kaunteyāḥ mama eṣā matiḥ acyuta
4. Now, they are fully grown, with their wings developed, residing entirely in foreign lands. O unswerving one (Duryodhana), these sons of Kuntī cannot be vanquished by stratagems; this is my firm opinion.
न च ते व्यसनैर्योक्तुं शक्या दिष्टकृता हि ते ।
शङ्किताश्चेप्सवश्चैव पितृपैतामहं पदम् ॥५॥
5. na ca te vyasanairyoktuṁ śakyā diṣṭakṛtā hi te ,
śaṅkitāścepsavaścaiva pitṛpaitāmahaṁ padam.
5. na ca te vyasanaiḥ yoktum śakyāḥ diṣṭakṛtāḥ hi te
śaṅkitāḥ ca īpsavaḥ ca eva pitṛpaitāmaham padam
5. Moreover, they cannot be subjected to misfortunes, for they are indeed shaped by destiny. And they are both apprehensive and eager for their paternal and ancestral position.
परस्परेण भेदश्च नाधातुं तेषु शक्यते ।
एकस्यां ये रताः पत्न्यां न भिद्यन्ते परस्परम् ॥६॥
6. paraspareṇa bhedaśca nādhātuṁ teṣu śakyate ,
ekasyāṁ ye ratāḥ patnyāṁ na bhidyante parasparam.
6. paraspareṇa bhedaḥ ca na adhātum teṣu śakyate |
ekasyām ye ratāḥ patnyām na bhidyante parasparam
6. It is not possible to sow discord among them. Those who are devoted to one wife do not become separated from each other.
न चापि कृष्णा शक्येत तेभ्यो भेदयितुं परैः ।
परिद्यूनान्वृतवती किमुताद्य मृजावतः ॥७॥
7. na cāpi kṛṣṇā śakyeta tebhyo bhedayituṁ paraiḥ ,
paridyūnānvṛtavatī kimutādya mṛjāvataḥ.
7. na ca api kṛṣṇā śakyeta tebhyaḥ bhedayitum paraiḥ
| paridyūnān vṛtavatī kim uta adya mṛjāvataḥ
7. Nor can Draupadī be separated from them by others. She chose them when they were emaciated and suffering; how much more so will she remain with them now, when they are splendid?
ईप्सितश्च गुणः स्त्रीणामेकस्या बहुभर्तृता ।
तं च प्राप्तवती कृष्णा न सा भेदयितुं सुखम् ॥८॥
8. īpsitaśca guṇaḥ strīṇāmekasyā bahubhartṛtā ,
taṁ ca prāptavatī kṛṣṇā na sā bhedayituṁ sukham.
8. īpsitaḥ ca guṇaḥ strīṇām ekasyā bahubhartṛtā |
tam ca prāptavatī kṛṣṇā na sā bhedayitum sukham
8. Indeed, a desired quality for women, for one woman, is to have many husbands. And Draupadī has attained that; thus, it is not easy to separate her.
आर्यवृत्तश्च पाञ्चाल्यो न स राजा धनप्रियः ।
न संत्यक्ष्यति कौन्तेयान्राज्यदानैरपि ध्रुवम् ॥९॥
9. āryavṛttaśca pāñcālyo na sa rājā dhanapriyaḥ ,
na saṁtyakṣyati kaunteyānrājyadānairapi dhruvam.
9. āryavṛttaḥ ca pāñcālyaḥ na saḥ rājā dhanapriyaḥ |
na saṃtyakṣyati kaunteyān rājyadānaiḥ api dhruvam
9. Furthermore, the King of Pañcāla is of noble character; he is not a ruler who loves wealth. He will certainly not abandon the sons of Kuntī (Kaunteyāḥ), even with gifts of kingdoms.
तथास्य पुत्रो गुणवाननुरक्तश्च पाण्डवान् ।
तस्मान्नोपायसाध्यांस्तानहं मन्ये कथंचन ॥१०॥
10. tathāsya putro guṇavānanuraktaśca pāṇḍavān ,
tasmānnopāyasādhyāṁstānahaṁ manye kathaṁcana.
10. tathā asya putraḥ guṇavān anuraktaḥ ca pāṇḍavān |
tasmāt na upāyasādhyān tān aham manye kathaṃcana
10. Similarly, his (Drupada's) son is virtuous and devoted to the Pāṇḍavas. Therefore, I do not consider them to be won over by any stratagem whatsoever.
इदं त्वद्य क्षमं कर्तुमस्माकं पुरुषर्षभ ।
यावन्न कृतमूलास्ते पाण्डवेया विशां पते ।
तावत्प्रहरणीयास्ते रोचतां तव विक्रमः ॥११॥
11. idaṁ tvadya kṣamaṁ kartumasmākaṁ puruṣarṣabha ,
yāvanna kṛtamūlāste pāṇḍaveyā viśāṁ pate ,
tāvatpraharaṇīyāste rocatāṁ tava vikramaḥ.
11. idam tu adya kṣamam kartum asmākam
puruṣarṣabha yāvat na kṛtamūlāḥ
te pāṇḍaveyāḥ viśām pate tāvat
praharaṇīyāḥ te rocatām tava vikramaḥ
11. O best among men (puruṣarṣabha), O lord of the people, it is proper for us to do this today, as long as those Pāṇḍavas have not established firm roots. Let your valor be pleasing, and let them be attacked until then.
अस्मत्पक्षो महान्यावद्यावत्पाञ्चालको लघुः ।
तावत्प्रहरणं तेषां क्रियतां मा विचारय ॥१२॥
12. asmatpakṣo mahānyāvadyāvatpāñcālako laghuḥ ,
tāvatpraharaṇaṁ teṣāṁ kriyatāṁ mā vicāraya.
12. asmatpakṣaḥ mahān yāvat yāvat pāñcālakaḥ laghuḥ
tāvat praharaṇam teṣām kriyatām mā vicāraya
12. As long as our side is strong and the Pāñcālas are weak, let an attack be made upon them. Do not hesitate!
वाहनानि प्रभूतानि मित्राणि बहुलानि च ।
यावन्न तेषां गान्धारे तावदेवाशु विक्रम ॥१३॥
13. vāhanāni prabhūtāni mitrāṇi bahulāni ca ,
yāvanna teṣāṁ gāndhāre tāvadevāśu vikrama.
13. vāhanāni prabhūtāni mitrāṇi bahulāni ca
yāvat na teṣām gāndhāre tāvat eva āśu vikrama
13. O Gāndhāra, attack quickly as long as they (the Pāṇḍavas) do not have abundant vehicles and numerous allies.
यावच्च राजा पाञ्चाल्यो नोद्यमे कुरुते मनः ।
सह पुत्रैर्महावीर्यैस्तावदेवाशु विक्रम ॥१४॥
14. yāvacca rājā pāñcālyo nodyame kurute manaḥ ,
saha putrairmahāvīryaistāvadevāśu vikrama.
14. yāvat ca rājā pāñcālyaḥ na udyame kurute manaḥ
saha putraiḥ mahāvīryaiḥ tāvat eva āśu vikrama
14. And as long as King Pāñcālya does not set his mind on exerting effort with his highly powerful sons, you must attack quickly!
यावन्नायाति वार्ष्णेयः कर्षन्यादववाहिनीम् ।
राज्यार्थे पाण्डवेयानां तावदेवाशु विक्रम ॥१५॥
15. yāvannāyāti vārṣṇeyaḥ karṣanyādavavāhinīm ,
rājyārthe pāṇḍaveyānāṁ tāvadevāśu vikrama.
15. yāvat na āyāti vārṣṇeyaḥ karṣan yādavavāhinīm
rājyārthe pāṇḍaveyānām tāvat eva āśu vikrama
15. As long as Vārṣṇeya (Kṛṣṇa) does not arrive, drawing the Yādava army for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas' kingdom, you must attack quickly!
वसूनि विविधान्भोगान्राज्यमेव च केवलम् ।
नात्याज्यमस्ति कृष्णस्य पाण्डवार्थे महीपते ॥१६॥
16. vasūni vividhānbhogānrājyameva ca kevalam ,
nātyājyamasti kṛṣṇasya pāṇḍavārthe mahīpate.
16. vasūni vividhān bhogān rājyam eva ca kevalam
na atyājyam asti kṛṣṇasya pāṇḍavārthe mahīpate
16. O King, for the sake of the Pāṇḍavas, Kṛṣṇa considers nothing as truly abandonable - neither wealth, nor various enjoyments, nor even the kingdom itself.
विक्रमेण मही प्राप्ता भरतेन महात्मना ।
विक्रमेण च लोकांस्त्रीञ्जितवान्पाकशासनः ॥१७॥
17. vikrameṇa mahī prāptā bharatena mahātmanā ,
vikrameṇa ca lokāṁstrīñjitavānpākaśāsanaḥ.
17. vikrameṇa mahī prāptā bharatena mahātmanā
vikrameṇa ca lokān trīn jitavān pākaśāsanaḥ
17. The great-souled Bharata acquired the earth through his valor. And Indra, the destroyer of Pāka (Pākaśāsanaḥ), conquered the three worlds through his valor.
विक्रमं च प्रशंसन्ति क्षत्रियस्य विशां पते ।
स्वको हि धर्मः शूराणां विक्रमः पार्थिवर्षभ ॥१८॥
18. vikramaṁ ca praśaṁsanti kṣatriyasya viśāṁ pate ,
svako hi dharmaḥ śūrāṇāṁ vikramaḥ pārthivarṣabha.
18. vikramam ca praśaṃsanti kṣatriyasya viśām pate
svakaḥ hi dharmaḥ śūrāṇām vikramaḥ pārthivarṣabha
18. O Lord of the people (viśāṃ pate), they praise the valor (vikrama) of a kṣatriya. Indeed, O best of kings (pārthivarṣabha), valor (vikrama) is the intrinsic nature (dharma) of heroes.
ते बलेन वयं राजन्महता चतुरङ्गिणा ।
प्रमथ्य द्रुपदं शीघ्रमानयामेह पाण्डवान् ॥१९॥
19. te balena vayaṁ rājanmahatā caturaṅgiṇā ,
pramathya drupadaṁ śīghramānayāmeha pāṇḍavān.
19. te balena vayam rājan mahatā caturaṅgiṇā
pramathya drupadam śīghram ānayāma iha pāṇḍavān
19. O King, with that great four-limbed army, we shall swiftly subdue Drupada and bring the Pāṇḍavas here.
न हि साम्ना न दानेन न भेदेन च पाण्डवाः ।
शक्याः साधयितुं तस्माद्विक्रमेणैव ताञ्जहि ॥२०॥
20. na hi sāmnā na dānena na bhedena ca pāṇḍavāḥ ,
śakyāḥ sādhayituṁ tasmādvikrameṇaiva tāñjahi.
20. na hi sāmnā na dānena na bhedena ca pāṇḍavāḥ
śakyāḥ sādhayitum tasmāt vikrameṇa eva tān jahi
20. Indeed, the Pāṇḍavas cannot be swayed by conciliation, nor by gifts, nor by creating divisions. Therefore, subdue them only through valor (vikrameṇa eva).
तान्विक्रमेण जित्वेमामखिलां भुङ्क्ष्व मेदिनीम् ।
नान्यमत्र प्रपश्यामि कार्योपायं जनाधिप ॥२१॥
21. tānvikrameṇa jitvemāmakhilāṁ bhuṅkṣva medinīm ,
nānyamatra prapaśyāmi kāryopāyaṁ janādhipa.
21. tān vikrameṇa jitvā imām akhilām bhuṅkṣva medinīm
na anyam atra prapaśyāmi kāryopāyam janādhipa
21. O lord of people, having conquered them through your valor, rule this entire earth. I see no other course of action in this matter.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
श्रुत्वा तु राधेयवचो धृतराष्ट्रः प्रतापवान् ।
अभिपूज्य ततः पश्चादिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥२२॥
22. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
śrutvā tu rādheyavaco dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ pratāpavān ,
abhipūjya tataḥ paścādidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
22. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca śrutvā tu rādheyavacaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ
pratāpavān abhipūjya tataḥ paścāt idam vacanam abravīt
22. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, the majestic Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having heard the words of Rādhā's son (Karṇa), honored him and afterwards spoke these words.
उपपन्नं महाप्राज्ञे कृतास्त्रे सूतनन्दने ।
त्वयि विक्रमसंपन्नमिदं वचनमीदृशम् ॥२३॥
23. upapannaṁ mahāprājñe kṛtāstre sūtanandane ,
tvayi vikramasaṁpannamidaṁ vacanamīdṛśam.
23. upapannam mahāprājñe kṛtāstre sūtanandane
tvayi vikramasampannam idam vacanam īdṛśam
23. This kind of statement, full of valor, is indeed fitting for you, the greatly intelligent and weapon-skilled son of the charioteer (Karṇa).
भूय एव तु भीष्मश्च द्रोणो विदुर एव च ।
युवां च कुरुतां बुद्धिं भवेद्या नः सुखोदया ॥२४॥
24. bhūya eva tu bhīṣmaśca droṇo vidura eva ca ,
yuvāṁ ca kurutāṁ buddhiṁ bhavedyā naḥ sukhodayā.
24. bhūya eva tu bhīṣmaḥ ca droṇaḥ vidura eva ca
yuvām ca kurutām buddhim bhavet yā naḥ sukhodayā
24. Moreover, let Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and Vidura, and you two (Karṇa and Duryodhana), deliberate and form a plan which may result in happiness for us.
तत आनाय्य तान्सर्वान्मन्त्रिणः सुमहायशाः ।
धृतराष्ट्रो महाराज मन्त्रयामास वै तदा ॥२५॥
25. tata ānāyya tānsarvānmantriṇaḥ sumahāyaśāḥ ,
dhṛtarāṣṭro mahārāja mantrayāmāsa vai tadā.
25. tataḥ ānāyya tān sarvān mantriṇaḥ sumahāyaśāḥ
dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ mahārāja mantrayāmāsa vai tadā
25. O great king (Janamejaya), then the very glorious Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having summoned all those ministers, indeed held a consultation at that time.
