मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततो विनिर्याय पुरात्कुम्भकर्णः सहानुगः ।
अपश्यत्कपिसैन्यं तज्जितकाश्यग्रतः स्थितम् ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
tato viniryāya purātkumbhakarṇaḥ sahānugaḥ ,
apaśyatkapisainyaṁ tajjitakāśyagrataḥ sthitam.

1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, having departed from the city, Kumbhakarṇa, accompanied by his followers, saw that monkey army standing with Jitakāśya at its front.
तमभ्येत्याशु हरयः परिवार्य समन्ततः ।
अभ्यघ्नंश्च महाकायैर्बहुभिर्जगतीरुहैः ।
करजैरतुदंश्चान्ये विहाय भयमुत्तमम् ॥२॥
2. tamabhyetyāśu harayaḥ parivārya samantataḥ ,
abhyaghnaṁśca mahākāyairbahubhirjagatīruhaiḥ ,
karajairatudaṁścānye vihāya bhayamuttamam.
2. tam abhyetya āśu harayaḥ parivārya
samantataḥ abhyaghnan ca mahākāyaiḥ
bahubhiḥ jagatīruhaiḥ karajaiḥ
atudan ca anye vihāya bhayam uttamam
2. The monkeys quickly approached him and surrounded him from all sides. They struck him with many large trees, while others, having completely abandoned fear, pierced him with their nails.
बहुधा युध्यमानास्ते युद्धमार्गैः प्लवंगमाः ।
नानाप्रहरणैर्भीमं राक्षसेन्द्रमताडयन् ॥३॥
3. bahudhā yudhyamānāste yuddhamārgaiḥ plavaṁgamāḥ ,
nānāpraharaṇairbhīmaṁ rākṣasendramatāḍayan.
3. bahudhā yudhyamānāḥ te yuddhamārgaiḥ plavaṅgamāḥ
nānāpraharanaiḥ bhīmam rākṣasendram atāḍayan
3. Those monkeys, fighting in many ways with various battle techniques, struck the formidable king of rākṣasas with diverse weapons.
स ताड्यमानः प्रहसन्भक्षयामास वानरान् ।
पनसं च गवाक्षं च वज्रबाहुं च वानरम् ॥४॥
4. sa tāḍyamānaḥ prahasanbhakṣayāmāsa vānarān ,
panasaṁ ca gavākṣaṁ ca vajrabāhuṁ ca vānaram.
4. sa tāḍyamānaḥ prahasan bhakṣayāmāsa vānarān
panasam ca gavākṣam ca vajrabāhum ca vānaram
4. While being struck, he laughed and devoured the monkeys, specifically Panasa, Gavākṣa, and the monkey Vajrabāhu.
तद्दृष्ट्वा व्यथनं कर्म कुम्भकर्णस्य रक्षसः ।
उदक्रोशन्परित्रस्तास्तारप्रभृतयस्तदा ॥५॥
5. taddṛṣṭvā vyathanaṁ karma kumbhakarṇasya rakṣasaḥ ,
udakrośanparitrastāstāraprabhṛtayastadā.
5. tad dṛṣṭvā vyathanam karma kumbhakarṇasya rakṣasaḥ
udakrośan paritrastāḥ tāraprabhṛtayaḥ tadā
5. Seeing that distressing act (karma) of the rākṣasa Kumbhakarna, Tāra and the others, greatly terrified, cried out at that moment.
तं तारमुच्चैः क्रोशन्तमन्यांश्च हरियूथपान् ।
अभिदुद्राव सुग्रीवः कुम्भकर्णमपेतभीः ॥६॥
6. taṁ tāramuccaiḥ krośantamanyāṁśca hariyūthapān ,
abhidudrāva sugrīvaḥ kumbhakarṇamapetabhīḥ.
6. tam tāram uccaiḥ krośantam anyān ca hariyūthapān
abhidudrāva sugrīvaḥ kumbhakarṇam apetabhīḥ
6. Fearless Sugriva rushed towards Kumbhakarna, who was engaged with Tāra, loudly shouting, and other monkey commanders.
ततोऽभिपत्य वेगेन कुम्भकर्णं महामनाः ।
शालेन जघ्निवान्मूर्ध्नि बलेन कपिकुञ्जरः ॥७॥
7. tato'bhipatya vegena kumbhakarṇaṁ mahāmanāḥ ,
śālena jaghnivānmūrdhni balena kapikuñjaraḥ.
7. tataḥ abhipatya vegena kumbhakarṇam mahāmanāḥ
śālena jaghnivān mūrdhni balena kapikuñjaraḥ
7. Then, the great-souled best among monkeys (Sugriva), having rushed towards Kumbhakarna with speed, struck him on the head with a śāla tree with great force.
स महात्मा महावेगः कुम्भकर्णस्य मूर्धनि ।
बिभेद शालं सुग्रीवो न चैवाव्यथयत्कपिः ॥८॥
8. sa mahātmā mahāvegaḥ kumbhakarṇasya mūrdhani ,
bibheda śālaṁ sugrīvo na caivāvyathayatkapiḥ.
8. saḥ mahātmā mahāvegaḥ kumbhakarṇasya mūrdhni
bibheda śālam sugrīvaḥ na ca eva avyathayat kapiḥ
8. That great-souled, very swift Sugriva broke the śāla tree on Kumbhakarna's head, but the monkey (Sugriva) did not pain him at all.
ततो विनद्य प्रहसञ्शालस्पर्शविबोधितः ।
दोर्भ्यामादाय सुग्रीवं कुम्भकर्णोऽहरद्बलात् ॥९॥
9. tato vinadya prahasañśālasparśavibodhitaḥ ,
dorbhyāmādāya sugrīvaṁ kumbhakarṇo'haradbalāt.
9. tataḥ vinadya prahasan śālasparśavibodhitaḥ
dorbhyām ādāya sugrīvam kumbhakarṇaḥ aharat balāt
9. Then, Kumbhakarna, having roared and laughing, awakened by the touch of the śāla tree, seized Sugriva with his two arms and carried him away by force.
ह्रियमाणं तु सुग्रीवं कुम्भकर्णेन रक्षसा ।
अवेक्ष्याभ्यद्रवद्वीरः सौमित्रिर्मित्रनन्दनः ॥१०॥
10. hriyamāṇaṁ tu sugrīvaṁ kumbhakarṇena rakṣasā ,
avekṣyābhyadravadvīraḥ saumitrirmitranandanaḥ.
10. hriyamāṇam tu sugrīvam kumbhakarṇena rakṣasā |
avekṣya abhyadravat vīraḥ saumitriḥ mitranandanaḥ
10. Upon seeing Sugriva being carried away by the demon (rakṣas) Kumbhakarna, the heroic Saumitri (Lakshmana), who delights his friends, rushed towards him.
सोऽभिपत्य महावेगं रुक्मपुङ्खं महाशरम् ।
प्राहिणोत्कुम्भकर्णाय लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा ॥११॥
11. so'bhipatya mahāvegaṁ rukmapuṅkhaṁ mahāśaram ,
prāhiṇotkumbhakarṇāya lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā.
11. saḥ abhipatya mahāvegam rukmapuṅkham mahāśaram
| prāhiṇot kumbhakarṇāya lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā
11. Lakshmana, the slayer of enemy heroes, having rushed forth, discharged a very swift, golden-feathered, great arrow at Kumbhakarna.
स तस्य देहावरणं भित्त्वा देहं च सायकः ।
जगाम दारयन्भूमिं रुधिरेण समुक्षितः ॥१२॥
12. sa tasya dehāvaraṇaṁ bhittvā dehaṁ ca sāyakaḥ ,
jagāma dārayanbhūmiṁ rudhireṇa samukṣitaḥ.
12. saḥ tasya dehāvaraṇam bhittvā deham ca sāyakaḥ
| jagāma dārayan bhūmim rudhireṇa samukṣitaḥ
12. That arrow, having pierced his body armor and body, passed through, tearing the earth, drenched in blood.
तथा स भिन्नहृदयः समुत्सृज्य कपीश्वरम् ।
कुम्भकर्णो महेष्वासः प्रगृहीतशिलायुधः ।
अभिदुद्राव सौमित्रिमुद्यम्य महतीं शिलाम् ॥१३॥
13. tathā sa bhinnahṛdayaḥ samutsṛjya kapīśvaram ,
kumbhakarṇo maheṣvāsaḥ pragṛhītaśilāyudhaḥ ,
abhidudrāva saumitrimudyamya mahatīṁ śilām.
13. tathā saḥ bhinnahṛdayaḥ samutsṛjya
kapīśvaram | kumbhakarṇaḥ maheṣvāsaḥ
pragṛhītaśilāyudhaḥ | abhidudrāva
saumitrim udyamya mahatīm śilām
13. Then, Kumbhakarna, whose heart was pierced, having released the lord of monkeys (Sugriva), and having taken up a great rock as his weapon, rushed towards Saumitri (Lakshmana) after lifting up a huge rock.
तस्याभिद्रवतस्तूर्णं क्षुराभ्यामुच्छ्रितौ करौ ।
चिच्छेद निशिताग्राभ्यां स बभूव चतुर्भुजः ॥१४॥
14. tasyābhidravatastūrṇaṁ kṣurābhyāmucchritau karau ,
ciccheda niśitāgrābhyāṁ sa babhūva caturbhujaḥ.
14. tasya abhidravataḥ tūrṇam kṣurābhyām ucchritau
karau ciccheda niśitāgrābhyām sa babhūva caturbhujaḥ
14. As he (Kabandha) quickly rushed forward, (Lakṣmaṇa) cut off his two upraised hands with two sharp-pointed arrows (kṣura). Then he (Kabandha) became four-armed.
तानप्यस्य भुजान्सर्वान्प्रगृहीतशिलायुधान् ।
क्षुरैश्चिच्छेद लघ्वस्त्रं सौमित्रिः प्रतिदर्शयन् ॥१५॥
15. tānapyasya bhujānsarvānpragṛhītaśilāyudhān ,
kṣuraiściccheda laghvastraṁ saumitriḥ pratidarśayan.
15. tān api asya bhujān sarvān pragṛhītaśilāyudhān
kṣuraiḥ ciccheda laghvastram saumitriḥ pratidarśayan
15. Lakṣmaṇa (saumitriḥ), demonstrating his swiftness in archery, cut off all of his (Kabandha's) arms, which were holding stone weapons, with his arrows (kṣuraiḥ).
स बभूवातिकायश्च बहुपादशिरोभुजः ।
तं ब्रह्मास्त्रेण सौमित्रिर्ददाहाद्रिचयोपमम् ॥१६॥
16. sa babhūvātikāyaśca bahupādaśirobhujaḥ ,
taṁ brahmāstreṇa saumitrirdadāhādricayopamam.
16. sa babhūva atikāyaḥ ca bahupādaśirobhujaḥ tam
brahmāstreṇa saumitriḥ dadāha adricayopamam
16. And he (Kabandha) became enormously huge-bodied, with many feet, heads, and arms. Lakṣmaṇa (saumitriḥ) then burnt him, who resembled a heap of mountains, with the Brahmā weapon (brahmāstra).
स पपात महावीर्यो दिव्यास्त्राभिहतो रणे ।
महाशनिविनिर्दग्धः पादपोऽङ्कुरवानिव ॥१७॥
17. sa papāta mahāvīryo divyāstrābhihato raṇe ,
mahāśanivinirdagdhaḥ pādapo'ṅkuravāniva.
17. sa papāta mahāvīryaḥ divyāstrābhihataḥ raṇe
mahāśanivinirdagdhaḥ pādapaḥ aṅkuravān iva
17. That greatly powerful (demon) fell on the battlefield, struck by the divine weapon, just like a young tree with sprouts (aṅkuravān), burnt down by a mighty thunderbolt.
तं दृष्ट्वा वृत्रसंकाशं कुम्भकर्णं तरस्विनम् ।
गतासुं पतितं भूमौ राक्षसाः प्राद्रवन्भयात् ॥१८॥
18. taṁ dṛṣṭvā vṛtrasaṁkāśaṁ kumbhakarṇaṁ tarasvinam ,
gatāsuṁ patitaṁ bhūmau rākṣasāḥ prādravanbhayāt.
18. tam dṛṣṭvā vṛtrasaṃkāśam kumbhakarṇam tarasvinam
gatāsum patitam bhūmau rākṣasāḥ prādravan bhayāt
18. Upon seeing that mighty Kumbhakarṇa, who resembled Vṛtra, fallen lifeless on the ground, the Rākṣasas fled in fear.
तथा तान्द्रवतो योधान्दृष्ट्वा तौ दूषणानुजौ ।
अवस्थाप्याथ सौमित्रिं संक्रुद्धावभ्यधावताम् ॥१९॥
19. tathā tāndravato yodhāndṛṣṭvā tau dūṣaṇānujau ,
avasthāpyātha saumitriṁ saṁkruddhāvabhyadhāvatām.
19. tathā tān dravataḥ yodhān dṛṣṭvā tau dūṣaṇānujau
avasthāpya atha saumitrim saṃkruddhau abhyadhāvatām
19. Then, upon seeing those fleeing warriors, Dūṣaṇa's two younger brothers, after positioning Lakṣmaṇa (saumitri), both rushed forward in great anger.
तावाद्रवन्तौ संक्रुद्धौ वज्रवेगप्रमाथिनौ ।
प्रतिजग्राह सौमित्रिर्विनद्योभौ पतत्रिभिः ॥२०॥
20. tāvādravantau saṁkruddhau vajravegapramāthinau ,
pratijagrāha saumitrirvinadyobhau patatribhiḥ.
20. tau ādravantau saṃkruddhau vajravegapramāthinau
pratijagrāha saumitriḥ vinadya ubhau patatribhiḥ
20. Lakṣmaṇa (saumitri) met those two, who were rushing towards him, greatly enraged and destructive with the speed of a thunderbolt (vajra), by roaring and shooting arrows at both of them.
ततः सुतुमुलं युद्धमभवल्लोमहर्षणम् ।
दूषणानुजयोः पार्थ लक्ष्मणस्य च धीमतः ॥२१॥
21. tataḥ sutumulaṁ yuddhamabhavallomaharṣaṇam ,
dūṣaṇānujayoḥ pārtha lakṣmaṇasya ca dhīmataḥ.
21. tataḥ sutumulam yuddham abhavat lomaharṣaṇam
dūṣaṇānujayoḥ pārtha lakṣmaṇasya ca dhīmataḥ
21. Then a very tumultuous and hair-raising battle ensued between Dūṣaṇa's two younger brothers, Pārtha, and the intelligent Lakṣmaṇa.
महता शरवर्षेण राक्षसौ सोऽभ्यवर्षत ।
तौ चापि वीरौ संक्रुद्धावुभौ तौ समवर्षताम् ॥२२॥
22. mahatā śaravarṣeṇa rākṣasau so'bhyavarṣata ,
tau cāpi vīrau saṁkruddhāvubhau tau samavarṣatām.
22. mahatā śaravarṣeṇa rākṣasau saḥ abhyavarṣata tau
ca api vīrau saṃkruddhau ubhau tau samavarṣatām
22. He showered the two rākṣasas with a mighty barrage of arrows. And those two enraged heroes, both of them, showered (arrows) back upon him.
मुहूर्तमेवमभवद्वज्रवेगप्रमाथिनोः ।
सौमित्रेश्च महाबाहोः संप्रहारः सुदारुणः ॥२३॥
23. muhūrtamevamabhavadvajravegapramāthinoḥ ,
saumitreśca mahābāhoḥ saṁprahāraḥ sudāruṇaḥ.
23. muhūrtam evam abhavat vajravegapramāthinoḥ
saumitreḥ ca mahābāhoḥ saṃprahāraḥ sudāruṇaḥ
23. Thus, for a moment, an exceedingly fierce battle took place between the mighty-armed Lakṣmaṇa (Saumitri) and Vajravega and Pramathin.
अथाद्रिशृङ्गमादाय हनूमान्मारुतात्मजः ।
अभिद्रुत्याददे प्राणान्वज्रवेगस्य रक्षसः ॥२४॥
24. athādriśṛṅgamādāya hanūmānmārutātmajaḥ ,
abhidrutyādade prāṇānvajravegasya rakṣasaḥ.
24. atha adriśṛṅgam ādāya hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ
abhidrutya ādade prāṇān vajravegasya rakṣasaḥ
24. Then, Hanuman, the son of Vāyu (Maruta), taking a mountain peak, rushed forward and seized the life (prāṇa) of the rākṣasa Vajravega.
नीलश्च महता ग्राव्णा दूषणावरजं हरिः ।
प्रमाथिनमभिद्रुत्य प्रममाथ महाबलः ॥२५॥
25. nīlaśca mahatā grāvṇā dūṣaṇāvarajaṁ hariḥ ,
pramāthinamabhidrutya pramamātha mahābalaḥ.
25. nīlaḥ ca mahatā grāvṇā dūṣaṇāvarajam hariḥ
pramāthinam abhidrutya pramamātha mahābalaḥ
25. And the mighty monkey (hari) Nila, attacking Pramathin, the younger brother of Dūṣaṇa, crushed him with a great rock.
ततः प्रावर्तत पुनः संग्रामः कटुकोदयः ।
रामरावणसैन्यानामन्योन्यमभिधावताम् ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ prāvartata punaḥ saṁgrāmaḥ kaṭukodayaḥ ,
rāmarāvaṇasainyānāmanyonyamabhidhāvatām.
26. tataḥ prāvartata punaḥ saṃgrāmaḥ kaṭukodayaḥ
rāmarāvaṇasainyānām anyonyam abhidhāvatām
26. Then, the battle with a bitter outcome between the armies of Rama and Ravana, who were charging at each other, commenced once more.
शतशो नैरृतान्वन्या जघ्नुर्वन्यांश्च नैरृताः ।
नैरृतास्तत्र वध्यन्ते प्रायशो न तु वानराः ॥२७॥
27. śataśo nairṛtānvanyā jaghnurvanyāṁśca nairṛtāḥ ,
nairṛtāstatra vadhyante prāyaśo na tu vānarāḥ.
27. śataśaḥ nairṛtān vanyāḥ jaghnuḥ vanyān ca nairṛtāḥ
nairṛtāḥ tatra vadhyante prāyaśaḥ na tu vānarāḥ
27. Hundreds of forest-dwellers killed Rākṣasas, and Rākṣasas, in turn, killed forest-dwellers. In that battle, mostly the Rākṣasas were being killed, but not the monkeys (vānarās).
