बृहदश्व उवाच ।
वृते तु नैषधे भैम्या लोकपाला महौजसः ।
यान्तो ददृशुरायान्तं द्वापरं कलिना सह ॥१॥
1. bṛhadaśva uvāca ,
vṛte tu naiṣadhe bhaimyā lokapālā mahaujasaḥ ,
yānto dadṛśurāyāntaṁ dvāparaṁ kalinā saha.

1. Bṛhadaśva said: However, after Damayantī, Bhīma's daughter, had chosen the king of Niṣadha (Nala), the immensely powerful guardians of the world (lokapālāḥ), who were on their way back, saw Dvāpara approaching along with Kali.
अथाब्रवीत्कलिं शक्रः संप्रेक्ष्य बलवृत्रहा ।
द्वापरेण सहायेन कले ब्रूहि क्व यास्यसि ॥२॥
2. athābravītkaliṁ śakraḥ saṁprekṣya balavṛtrahā ,
dvāpareṇa sahāyena kale brūhi kva yāsyasi.
2. atha abravīt kalim śakraḥ saṃprekṣya balavṛtrahā
dvāpareṇa sahāyena kale brūhi kva yāsyasi
2. Then Indra (Śakra), the slayer of Bala and Vṛtra, observing Kali accompanied by Dvāpara, asked: 'O Kali, tell me, where are you going?'
ततोऽब्रवीत्कलिः शक्रं दमयन्त्याः स्वयंवरम् ।
गत्वाहं वरयिष्ये तां मनो हि मम तद्गतम् ॥३॥
3. tato'bravītkaliḥ śakraṁ damayantyāḥ svayaṁvaram ,
gatvāhaṁ varayiṣye tāṁ mano hi mama tadgatam.
3. tataḥ abravīt kaliḥ śakram damayantyāḥ svayaṃvaram
gatvā aham varayiṣye tām manaḥ hi mama tadgatam
3. Then Kali replied to Indra: 'I will go to Damayantī's self-choice ceremony (svayaṃvara) and choose her, because my mind is certainly set on her.'
तमब्रवीत्प्रहस्येन्द्रो निर्वृत्तः स स्वयंवरः ।
वृतस्तया नलो राजा पतिरस्मत्समीपतः ॥४॥
4. tamabravītprahasyendro nirvṛttaḥ sa svayaṁvaraḥ ,
vṛtastayā nalo rājā patirasmatsamīpataḥ.
4. tam abravīt prahasya indraḥ nirvṛttaḥ saḥ svayaṃvaraḥ
vṛtaḥ tayā nalaḥ rājā patiḥ asmat samīpataḥ
4. Indra, laughing, said to him that the self-choice (svayaṃvara) ceremony was concluded. King Nala had been chosen by her as her husband, right in their presence.
एवमुक्तस्तु शक्रेण कलिः कोपसमन्वितः ।
देवानामन्त्र्य तान्सर्वानुवाचेदं वचस्तदा ॥५॥
5. evamuktastu śakreṇa kaliḥ kopasamanvitaḥ ,
devānāmantrya tānsarvānuvācedaṁ vacastadā.
5. evam uktaḥ tu śakreṇa kaliḥ kopa-samanvitaḥ
devān āmantrya tān sarvān uvāca idam vacaḥ tadā
5. Thus addressed by Indra (Śakra), Kali, filled with anger, summoned all those gods and then spoke these words.
देवानां मानुषं मध्ये यत्सा पतिमविन्दत ।
ननु तस्या भवेन्न्याय्यं विपुलं दण्डधारणम् ॥६॥
6. devānāṁ mānuṣaṁ madhye yatsā patimavindata ,
nanu tasyā bhavennyāyyaṁ vipulaṁ daṇḍadhāraṇam.
6. devānām mānuṣam madhye yat sā patim avindata
nanu tasyā bhavet nyāyyam vipulam daṇḍa-dhāraṇam
6. In the presence of the gods, since that human woman chose a husband, surely a great punishment should be imposed upon her.
एवमुक्ते तु कलिना प्रत्यूचुस्ते दिवौकसः ।
अस्माभिः समनुज्ञातो दमयन्त्या नलो वृतः ॥७॥
7. evamukte tu kalinā pratyūcuste divaukasaḥ ,
asmābhiḥ samanujñāto damayantyā nalo vṛtaḥ.
7. evam ukte tu kalinā pratyūcuḥ te divaukasaḥ
asmābhiḥ samanujñātaḥ damayantyā nalaḥ vṛtaḥ
7. But when Kali had spoken thus, those gods replied, "Nala was chosen by Damayantī with our permission."
कश्च सर्वगुणोपेतं नाश्रयेत नलं नृपम् ।
यो वेद धर्मानखिलान्यथावच्चरितव्रतः ॥८॥
8. kaśca sarvaguṇopetaṁ nāśrayeta nalaṁ nṛpam ,
yo veda dharmānakhilānyathāvaccaritavrataḥ.
8. kaḥ ca sarvaguṇopetam na āśrayeta nalam nṛpam
yaḥ veda dharmān akhilān yathāvat caritavrataḥ
8. Who would not take refuge in King Nala, who is endowed with all good qualities, who knows all the natural laws (dharma) as they truly are, and who has fulfilled his vows?
यस्मिन्सत्यं धृतिर्दानं तपः शौचं दमः शमः ।
ध्रुवाणि पुरुषव्याघ्रे लोकपालसमे नृपे ॥९॥
9. yasminsatyaṁ dhṛtirdānaṁ tapaḥ śaucaṁ damaḥ śamaḥ ,
dhruvāṇi puruṣavyāghre lokapālasame nṛpe.
9. yasmin satyam dhṛtiḥ dānam tapaḥ śaucam damaḥ
śamaḥ dhruvāṇi puruṣavyāghre lokapālasame nṛpe
9. In that king, who is a tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra) and equal to the world-protectors, truthfulness, fortitude, generosity (dāna), austerity (tapas), purity, self-control, and tranquility are firmly established.
आत्मानं स शपेन्मूढो हन्याच्चात्मानमात्मना ।
एवंगुणं नलं यो वै कामयेच्छपितुं कले ॥१०॥
10. ātmānaṁ sa śapenmūḍho hanyāccātmānamātmanā ,
evaṁguṇaṁ nalaṁ yo vai kāmayecchapituṁ kale.
10. ātmānam saḥ śapet mūḍhaḥ hanyāt ca ātmānam ātmanā
evaṃguṇam nalam yaḥ vai kāmayet śapituṃ kale
10. That fool would curse his own self (ātman) and kill his self (ātman) by his own self (ātman), O Kali, whoever indeed desires to curse Nala, who possesses such qualities.
कृच्छ्रे स नरके मज्जेदगाधे विपुलेऽप्लवे ।
एवमुक्त्वा कलिं देवा द्वापरं च दिवं ययुः ॥११॥
11. kṛcchre sa narake majjedagādhe vipule'plave ,
evamuktvā kaliṁ devā dvāparaṁ ca divaṁ yayuḥ.
11. kṛcchre saḥ narake majjet agādhe vipule aplave
evam uktvā kalim devāḥ dvāparam ca divam yayuḥ
11. He would sink into a dreadful, vast, unfathomable, and inescapable hell. Having spoken thus to Kali, the gods and Dvapara went to heaven.
ततो गतेषु देवेषु कलिर्द्वापरमब्रवीत् ।
संहर्तुं नोत्सहे कोपं नले वत्स्यामि द्वापर ॥१२॥
12. tato gateṣu deveṣu kalirdvāparamabravīt ,
saṁhartuṁ notsahe kopaṁ nale vatsyāmi dvāpara.
12. tataḥ gateṣu deveṣu kaliḥ dvāparam abravīt
saṃhartum na utsahe kopam nale vatsyāmi dvāpara
12. Then, after the gods had departed, Kali spoke to Dvapara, 'O Dvapara, I am unable to restrain my anger. I will reside in Nala.'
भ्रंशयिष्यामि तं राज्यान्न भैम्या सह रंस्यते ।
त्वमप्यक्षान्समाविश्य कर्तुं साहाय्यमर्हसि ॥१३॥
13. bhraṁśayiṣyāmi taṁ rājyānna bhaimyā saha raṁsyate ,
tvamapyakṣānsamāviśya kartuṁ sāhāyyamarhasi.
13. bhraṃśayiṣyāmi tam rājyāt na bhaimyā saha raṃsyate
| tvam api akṣān samāviśya kartum sāhāyyam arhasi
13. I will cause him to fall from his kingdom, and he will not be able to enjoy himself with Bhīmī. You too should provide help by entering the dice.
