कच्चित्सुखं स्वपिषि त्वं बृहस्पते कच्चिन्मनोज्ञाः परिचारकास्ते ।
कच्चिद्देवानां सुखकामोऽसि विप्र कच्चिद्देवास्त्वां परिपालयन्ति ॥१॥

kaccitsukhaṁ svapiṣi tvaṁ bṛhaspate; kaccinmanojñāḥ paricārakāste ,
kacciddevānāṁ sukhakāmo'si vipra; kacciddevāstvāṁ paripālayanti.

1. Indra said, 'O Bṛhaspati, do you sleep peacefully? Are your attendants agreeable? O sage, do you wish for the well-being of the gods? And do the gods protect you?'
बृहस्पतिरुवाच ।
सुखं शयेऽहं शयने महेन्द्र तथा मनोज्ञाः परिचारका मे ।
तथा देवानां सुखकामोऽस्मि शक्र देवाश्च मां सुभृशं पालयन्ति ॥२॥
2. bṛhaspatiruvāca ,
sukhaṁ śaye'haṁ śayane mahendra; tathā manojñāḥ paricārakā me ,
tathā devānāṁ sukhakāmo'smi śakra; devāśca māṁ subhṛśaṁ pālayanti.
2. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca sukham śaye aham
śayane mahendra tathā manojñāḥ paricārakāḥ
me tathā devānām sukhakāmaḥ asmi
śakra devāḥ ca mām subhṛśam pālayanti
2. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca mahendra aham śayane
sukham śaye tathā me paricārakāḥ
manojñāḥ śakra tathā devānām sukhakāmaḥ
asmi ca devāḥ mām subhṛśam pālayanti
2. Bṛhaspati said, 'O great Indra, I sleep peacefully in bed. And my attendants are likewise pleasing. O Śakra, I am also desirous of the welfare of the gods, and the gods protect me very greatly.'
इन्द्र उवाच ।
कुतो दुःखं मानसं देहजं वा पाण्डुर्विवर्णश्च कुतस्त्वमद्य ।
आचक्ष्व मे तद्द्विज यावदेतान्निहन्मि सर्वांस्तव दुःखकर्तॄन् ॥३॥
3. indra uvāca ,
kuto duḥkhaṁ mānasaṁ dehajaṁ vā; pāṇḍurvivarṇaśca kutastvamadya ,
ācakṣva me taddvija yāvadetā;nnihanmi sarvāṁstava duḥkhakartṝn.
3. indraḥ uvāca kutaḥ duḥkham mānasam
dehajam vā pāṇḍuḥ vivarṇaḥ ca kutaḥ
tvam adya ācakṣva me tat dvija yāvat
etān nihanmi sarvān tava duḥkhakartṝn
3. indraḥ uvāca he dvija kutaḥ mānasam vā dehajam duḥkham (asti)? adya kutaḥ tvam pāṇḍuḥ ca vivarṇaḥ (asi)? tat me ācakṣva,
yāvat tava duḥkhakartṝn sarvān etān nihanmi.
3. Indra said: "From where does this mental or bodily suffering arise? And why are you pale and discolored today? Tell me that, O twice-born (dvija), so that I may slay all those who cause your distress."
बृहस्पतिरुवाच ।
मरुत्तमाहुर्मघवन्यक्ष्यमाणं महायज्ञेनोत्तमदक्षिणेन ।
तं संवर्तो याजयितेति मे श्रुतं तदिच्छामि न स तं याजयेत ॥४॥
4. bṛhaspatiruvāca ,
maruttamāhurmaghavanyakṣyamāṇaṁ; mahāyajñenottamadakṣiṇena ,
taṁ saṁvarto yājayiteti me śrutaṁ; tadicchāmi na sa taṁ yājayeta.
4. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca maruttam āhuḥ maghavan
yakṣyamāṇam mahāyajñena uttamadakṣiṇena
tam saṃvartaḥ yājayitā iti me
śrutam tat icchāmi na saḥ tam yājayeta
4. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca he maghavan,
maruttam uttamadakṣiṇena mahāyajñena yakṣyamāṇam āhuḥ.
saṃvartaḥ tam yājayitā iti me śrutam (asti).
tat (idam) icchāmi,
saḥ tam na yājayeta.
4. Bṛhaspati said: "O Maghavan (Indra), they say that Marutta is about to perform a great Vedic ritual (mahāyajña) with excellent priestly fees. I have heard that Saṃvarta will officiate for him. Therefore, I do not wish that he should officiate for him."
इन्द्र उवाच ।
सर्वान्कामाननुजातोऽसि विप्र यस्त्वं देवानां मन्त्रयसे पुरोधाः ।
उभौ च ते जन्ममृत्यू व्यतीतौ किं संवर्तस्तव कर्ताद्य विप्र ॥५॥
5. indra uvāca ,
sarvānkāmānanujāto'si vipra; yastvaṁ devānāṁ mantrayase purodhāḥ ,
ubhau ca te janmamṛtyū vyatītau; kiṁ saṁvartastava kartādya vipra.
5. indraḥ uvāca sarvān kāmān anujātaḥ asi
vipra yaḥ tvam devānām mantrayase
purodhāḥ ubhau ca te janmamṛtyū vyatītau
kim saṃvartaḥ tava kartā adya vipra
5. indraḥ uvāca he vipra,
tvam sarvān kāmān anujātaḥ asi,
yaḥ tvam devānām purodhāḥ (san) mantrayase.
te ubhau ca janmamṛtyū vyatītau (sthaḥ).
he vipra,
adya saṃvartaḥ kim tava kartā (syāt)?
5. Indra said: "O brahmin (vipra), you are born with all desires fulfilled, and you counsel the gods as their chief priest (purodhā). Both birth and death have passed for you. Why should Saṃvarta be your concern today, O brahmin (vipra)?"
बृहस्पतिरुवाच ।
देवैः सह त्वमसुरान्संप्रणुद्य जिघांससेऽद्याप्युत सानुबन्धान् ।
यं यं समृद्धं पश्यसि तत्र तत्र दुःखं सपत्नेषु समृद्धभावः ॥६॥
6. bṛhaspatiruvāca ,
devaiḥ saha tvamasurānsaṁpraṇudya; jighāṁsase'dyāpyuta sānubandhān ,
yaṁ yaṁ samṛddhaṁ paśyasi tatra tatra; duḥkhaṁ sapatneṣu samṛddhabhāvaḥ.
6. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca devaiḥ saha tvam asurān
sampraṇudya jighāṃsase adya api uta
sānubandhān yam yam samṛddham paśyasi
tatra tatra duḥkham sapatneṣu samṛddhabhāvaḥ
6. bṛhaspatiḥ uvāca tvam devaiḥ saha asurān sampraṇudya adya api uta sānubandhān jighāṃsase.
yam yam samṛddham (puruṣam) paśyasi,
tatra tatra sapatneṣu samṛddhabhāvaḥ (eva tava) duḥkham (bhavati).
6. Bṛhaspati said: "You, along with the gods, having completely driven away the asuras, still wish to kill them, even their followers. Whomever you see prosperous, that prosperity of your rivals invariably causes you distress."
अतोऽस्मि देवेन्द्र विवर्णरूपः सपत्नो मे वर्धते तन्निशम्य ।
सर्वोपायैर्मघवन्संनियच्छ संवर्तं वा पार्थिवं वा मरुत्तम् ॥७॥
7. ato'smi devendra vivarṇarūpaḥ; sapatno me vardhate tanniśamya ,
sarvopāyairmaghavansaṁniyaccha; saṁvartaṁ vā pārthivaṁ vā maruttam.
7. ataḥ asmi devendra vivarṇarūpaḥ
sapatnaḥ me vardhate tat niśamya
sarvopāyaiḥ maghavan saṃniyaccha
saṃvartaṃ vā pārthivaṃ vā maruttam
7. Hearing that my rival prospers, O king of gods, I am therefore discolored (pale-faced). O Maghavan, by all means, restrain either Saṃvarta or Marutta the king.
इन्द्र उवाच ।
एहि गच्छ प्रहितो जातवेदो बृहस्पतिं परिदातुं मरुत्ते ।
अयं वै त्वा याजयिता बृहस्पतिस्तथामरं चैव करिष्यतीति ॥८॥
8. indra uvāca ,
ehi gaccha prahito jātavedo; bṛhaspatiṁ paridātuṁ marutte ,
ayaṁ vai tvā yājayitā bṛhaspati;stathāmaraṁ caiva kariṣyatīti.
8. indraḥ uvāca ehi gaccha prahitaḥ
jātavedaḥ bṛhaspatiṃ paridātuṃ marutte
ayam vai tvā yājayitā bṛhaspatiḥ
tathā amaraṃ ca eva kariṣyati iti
8. Indra spoke: 'Come, go forth, O Jātavedas (Agni), sent to entrust Bṛhaspati to Marutta. Indeed, this Bṛhaspati will cause him (Marutta) to perform a Vedic ritual (yajña) and will also render him immortal.'
अग्निरुवाच ।
अयं गच्छामि तव शक्राद्य दूतो बृहस्पतिं परिदातुं मरुत्ते ।
वाचं सत्यां पुरुहूतस्य कर्तुं बृहस्पतेश्चापचितिं चिकीर्षुः ॥९॥
9. agniruvāca ,
ayaṁ gacchāmi tava śakrādya dūto; bṛhaspatiṁ paridātuṁ marutte ,
vācaṁ satyāṁ puruhūtasya kartuṁ; bṛhaspateścāpacitiṁ cikīrṣuḥ.
9. agniḥ uvāca ayam gacchāmi tava śakra
adya dūtaḥ bṛhaspatiṃ paridātuṃ
marutte vācaṃ satyāṃ puruhūtasya kartuṃ
bṛhaspateḥ ca apacitiṃ cikīrṣuḥ
9. Agni spoke: 'I, as your messenger, O Śakra (Indra), go today to entrust Bṛhaspati to Marutta, intending to make the word of Puruhūta (Indra) true and desiring to show respect to Bṛhaspati.'
व्यास उवाच ।
ततः प्रायाद्धूमकेतुर्महात्मा वनस्पतीन्वीरुधश्चावमृद्नन् ।
कामाद्धिमान्ते परिवर्तमानः काष्ठातिगो मातरिश्वेव नर्दन् ॥१०॥
10. vyāsa uvāca ,
tataḥ prāyāddhūmaketurmahātmā; vanaspatīnvīrudhaścāvamṛdnan ,
kāmāddhimānte parivartamānaḥ; kāṣṭhātigo mātariśveva nardan.
10. vyāsaḥ uvāca tataḥ prāyāt dhūmaketūḥ
mahātmā vanaspatīn vīrudhaḥ ca
avamṛdnan kāmāt himānte parivartamānaḥ
kāṣṭhātigaḥ mātariśvā iva nardan
10. Vyāsa spoke: 'Then the great-souled Dhūmaketū (Agni) departed, crushing both trees and creepers. He moved about at the end of winter according to his will, roaring like the wind (mātariśvan) that transcends all directions.'
मरुत्त उवाच ।
आश्चर्यमद्य पश्यामि रूपिणं वह्निमागतम् ।
आसनं सलिलं पाद्यं गां चोपानय वै मुने ॥११॥
11. marutta uvāca ,
āścaryamadya paśyāmi rūpiṇaṁ vahnimāgatam ,
āsanaṁ salilaṁ pādyaṁ gāṁ copānaya vai mune.
11. maruttaḥ uvāca āścaryam adya paśyāmi rūpiṇam vahnim
āgatam āsanam salilam pādyam gām ca upānaya vai mune
11. Marutta said: 'Today I see a marvel: fire (vahni) has arrived in embodied form. O wise one (muni), please bring a seat, water, water for the feet, and a cow.'
अग्निरुवाच ।
आसनं सलिलं पाद्यं प्रतिनन्दामि तेऽनघ ।
इन्द्रेण तु समादिष्टं विद्धि मां दूतमागतम् ॥१२॥
12. agniruvāca ,
āsanaṁ salilaṁ pādyaṁ pratinandāmi te'nagha ,
indreṇa tu samādiṣṭaṁ viddhi māṁ dūtamāgatam.
12. agniḥ uvāca āsanam salilam pādyam pratinandāmi te
anagha indreṇa tu samādiṣṭam viddhi mām dūtam āgatam
12. Agni said: 'O sinless one, I gratefully accept your seat, water, and water for the feet. But know that I have come as a messenger, specifically instructed by Indra.'
मरुत्त उवाच ।
कच्चिच्छ्रीमान्देवराजः सुखी च कच्चिच्चास्मान्प्रीयते धूमकेतो ।
कच्चिद्देवाश्चास्य वशे यथावत्तद्ब्रूहि त्वं मम कार्त्स्न्येन देव ॥१३॥
13. marutta uvāca ,
kaccicchrīmāndevarājaḥ sukhī ca; kacciccāsmānprīyate dhūmaketo ,
kacciddevāścāsya vaśe yathāva;ttadbrūhi tvaṁ mama kārtsnyena deva.
13. maruttaḥ uvāca kaccit śrīmān devarājaḥ
sukhī ca kaccit ca asmān prīyate
dhūmaketo kaccit devāḥ ca asya vaśe yathāvat
tat brūhi tvam mama kārtsnyena deva
13. Marutta said: 'O smoke-bannered one (dhumaketu), is the glorious king of gods (devarāja) well and happy? Is he also pleased with us? Are the gods truly under his control? Please tell me all of this completely, O god.'
अग्निरुवाच ।
शक्रो भृशं सुसुखी पार्थिवेन्द्र प्रीतिं चेच्छत्यजरां वै त्वया सः ।
देवाश्च सर्वे वशगास्तस्य राजन्संदेशं त्वं शृणु मे देवराज्ञः ॥१४॥
14. agniruvāca ,
śakro bhṛśaṁ susukhī pārthivendra; prītiṁ cecchatyajarāṁ vai tvayā saḥ ,
devāśca sarve vaśagāstasya rāja;nsaṁdeśaṁ tvaṁ śṛṇu me devarājñaḥ.
14. agniḥ uvāca śakraḥ bhṛśam susukhī
pārthivendra prītim ca icchati ajarām vai
tvayā saḥ devāḥ ca sarve vaśagāḥ tasya
rājan sandeśam tvam śṛṇu me devarājaḥ
14. Agni said: 'O king (pārthivendra), Shakra (Indra) is exceedingly happy, and indeed he desires an unfading affection with you. All the gods are obedient to him, O king. Now, listen to my message from the king of gods (devarāja).'
यदर्थं मां प्राहिणोत्त्वत्सकाशं बृहस्पतिं परिदातुं मरुत्ते ।
अयं गुरुर्याजयिता नृप त्वां मर्त्यं सन्तममरं त्वां करोतु ॥१५॥
15. yadarthaṁ māṁ prāhiṇottvatsakāśaṁ; bṛhaspatiṁ paridātuṁ marutte ,
ayaṁ gururyājayitā nṛpa tvāṁ; martyaṁ santamamaraṁ tvāṁ karotu.
15. yadartham mām prāhiṇot tvatsakāśam
bṛhaspatim paridātum marutte
| ayam guruḥ yājayitā nṛpa tvām
martyam santam amaram tvām karotu
15. marutte nṛpa yadartham (saḥ) mām
tvatsakāśam bṛhaspatim paridātum
prāhiṇot ayam guruḥ tvām yājayitā
martyam santam amaram tvām karotu
15. O Marutta, the purpose for which he sent me to your presence was to hand over Bṛhaspati. O king, may this preceptor, the officiant for your Vedic ritual (yajña), make you, though mortal, immortal.
मरुत्त उवाच ।
संवर्तोऽयं याजयिता द्विजो मे बृहस्पतेरञ्जलिरेष तस्य ।
नासौ देवं याजयित्वा महेन्द्रं मर्त्यं सन्तं याजयन्नद्य शोभेत् ॥१६॥
16. marutta uvāca ,
saṁvarto'yaṁ yājayitā dvijo me; bṛhaspaterañjalireṣa tasya ,
nāsau devaṁ yājayitvā mahendraṁ; martyaṁ santaṁ yājayannadya śobhet.
16. maruttaḥ uvāca | saṃvartaḥ ayam yājayitā
dvijaḥ me | bṛhaspateḥ añjaliḥ eṣaḥ
tasya | na asau devam yājayitvā mahendram
martyam santam yājayan adya śobhet
16. maruttaḥ uvāca ayam saṃvartaḥ me dvijaḥ
yājayitā tasya eṣaḥ añjaliḥ bṛhaspateḥ
asau (bṛhaspatiḥ) devam mahendram yājayitvā
martyam santam yājayan adya na śobhet
16. Marutta said: 'This Saṃvarta is my Brahmin ritual (yajña) officiant. His (Saṃvarta's) reverence (añjali) is directed towards Bṛhaspati. That one (Bṛhaspati), having officiated a Vedic ritual (yajña) for the great Indra, would not be suitable today to officiate for a mortal being (martya).'
अग्निरुवाच ।
ये वै लोका देवलोके महान्तः संप्राप्स्यसे तान्देवराजप्रसादात् ।
त्वां चेदसौ याजयेद्वै बृहस्पतिर्नूनं स्वर्गं त्वं जयेः कीर्तियुक्तः ॥१७॥
17. agniruvāca ,
ye vai lokā devaloke mahāntaḥ; saṁprāpsyase tāndevarājaprasādāt ,
tvāṁ cedasau yājayedvai bṛhaspati;rnūnaṁ svargaṁ tvaṁ jayeḥ kīrtiyuktaḥ.
17. agniḥ uvāca | ye vai lokāḥ devaloke
mahāntaḥ | tān devarājaprasādāt samprāpsyase
| tvam cet asau bṛhaspatiḥ vai yājayet
nūnam tvam kīrtiyuktaḥ svargam jayeḥ
17. agniḥ uvāca devaloke ye vai mahāntaḥ lokāḥ,
tān devarājaprasādāt samprāpsyase cet asau bṛhaspatiḥ vai tvām yājayet nūnam kīrtiyuktaḥ tvam svargam jayeḥ
17. Agni said: 'Those great worlds that exist in the realm of the gods, you will certainly attain them by the grace of the king of gods. If that Bṛhaspati indeed officiates a Vedic ritual (yajña) for you, then surely you, endowed with fame, would conquer heaven.'
तथा लोका मानुषा ये च दिव्याः प्रजापतेश्चापि ये वै महान्तः ।
ते ते जिता देवराज्यं च कृत्स्नं बृहस्पतिश्चेद्याजयेत्त्वां नरेन्द्र ॥१८॥
18. tathā lokā mānuṣā ye ca divyāḥ; prajāpateścāpi ye vai mahāntaḥ ,
te te jitā devarājyaṁ ca kṛtsnaṁ; bṛhaspatiścedyājayettvāṁ narendra.
18. tathā lokāḥ mānuṣāḥ ye ca divyāḥ |
prajāpateḥ ca api ye vai mahāntaḥ | te
te jitāḥ | devarājyam ca kṛtsnam |
bṛhaspatiḥ cet yājayet tvām narendra
18. narendra tathā ye mānuṣāḥ ca divyāḥ lokāḥ,
ca api ye prajāpateḥ vai mahāntaḥ te te jitāḥ ca kṛtsnam devarājyam cet bṛhaspatiḥ tvām yājayet
18. O king (narendra), similarly, those human and divine worlds, and also those great worlds of Prajāpati - all of those will be conquered for you, and the entire kingdom of the gods (will be yours), if Bṛhaspati officiates a Vedic ritual (yajña) for you.
संवर्त उवाच ।
मास्मानेवं त्वं पुनरागाः कथंचिद्बृहस्पतिं परिदातुं मरुत्ते ।
मा त्वां धक्ष्ये चक्षुषा दारुणेन संक्रुद्धोऽहं पावक तन्निबोध ॥१९॥
19. saṁvarta uvāca ,
māsmānevaṁ tvaṁ punarāgāḥ kathaṁci;dbṛhaspatiṁ paridātuṁ marutte ,
mā tvāṁ dhakṣye cakṣuṣā dāruṇena; saṁkruddho'haṁ pāvaka tannibodha.
19. saṃvartaḥ uvāca | mā asmān evam tvam
punaḥ āgāḥ kathañcit bṛhaspatim paridātum
marutte | mā tvām dhakṣye cakṣuṣā dāruṇena
saṃkruddhaḥ aham pāvaka tat nibodha
19. Sāṃvarta said: "Do not ever approach us again in this manner to hand over Bṛhaspati to Marutta. O Pāvaka (fire god), know that I, being greatly enraged, will burn you with my fierce eye."
व्यास उवाच ।
ततो देवानगमद्धूमकेतुर्दाहाद्भीतो व्यथितोऽश्वत्थपर्णवत् ।
तं वै दृष्ट्वा प्राह शक्रो महात्मा बृहस्पतेः संनिधौ हव्यवाहम् ॥२०॥
20. vyāsa uvāca ,
tato devānagamaddhūmaketu;rdāhādbhīto vyathito'śvatthaparṇavat ,
taṁ vai dṛṣṭvā prāha śakro mahātmā; bṛhaspateḥ saṁnidhau havyavāham.
20. vyāsaḥ uvāca | tataḥ devān agamat
dhūmaketuḥ dāhāt bhītaḥ vyathitaḥ aśvatthaparṇavat
| tam vai dṛṣṭvā prāha śakraḥ
mahātmā bṛhaspateḥ saṃnidhau havyavāham
20. Vyāsa said: "Then Dhūmaketu (Agni), terrified by the prospect of being burnt and agitated like an Aśvattha leaf, went to the gods. Seeing him, the great-souled Śakra (Indra) addressed Havyavāha (Agni) in the presence of Bṛhaspati."
यत्त्वं गतः प्रहितो जातवेदो बृहस्पतिं परिदातुं मरुत्ते ।
तत्किं प्राह स नृपो यक्ष्यमाणः कच्चिद्वचः प्रतिगृह्णाति तच्च ॥२१॥
21. yattvaṁ gataḥ prahito jātavedo; bṛhaspatiṁ paridātuṁ marutte ,
tatkiṁ prāha sa nṛpo yakṣyamāṇaḥ; kaccidvacaḥ pratigṛhṇāti tacca.
21. yat tvam gataḥ prahitaḥ jātavedaḥ
bṛhaspatim paridātum marutte |
tat kim prāha sa nṛpaḥ yakṣyamāṇaḥ
kaccit vacaḥ pratigṛhṇāti ca tat
21. "Since you, O Jātavedas (Agni), were dispatched to hand over Bṛhaspati to Marutta, what did that king, who is desirous of performing a (Vedic ritual/yajña), say? And does he indeed accept our proposal?"
अग्निरुवाच ।
न ते वाचं रोचयते मरुत्तो बृहस्पतेरञ्जलिं प्राहिणोत्सः ।
संवर्तो मां याजयितेत्यभीक्ष्णं पुनः पुनः स मया प्रोच्यमानः ॥२२॥
22. agniruvāca ,
na te vācaṁ rocayate marutto; bṛhaspaterañjaliṁ prāhiṇotsaḥ ,
saṁvarto māṁ yājayitetyabhīkṣṇaṁ; punaḥ punaḥ sa mayā procyamānaḥ.
22. agniḥ uvāca | na te vācam rocayate
maruttaḥ bṛhaspateḥ añjalim prāhiṇot
saḥ | saṃvartaḥ mām yājayita iti
abhīkṣṇam punaḥ punaḥ saḥ mayā procyamānaḥ
22. Agni said: "Marutta does not agree with your words; instead, he has extended an oblation (añjali) to Bṛhaspati. While I was being repeatedly urged by him, he kept asserting: 'Sāṃvarta will officiate my (Vedic ritual/yajña)."'
उवाचेदं मानुषा ये च दिव्याः प्रजापतेर्ये च लोका महान्तः ।
तांश्चेल्लभेयं संविदं तेन कृत्वा तथापि नेच्छेयमिति प्रतीतः ॥२३॥
23. uvācedaṁ mānuṣā ye ca divyāḥ; prajāpaterye ca lokā mahāntaḥ ,
tāṁścellabheyaṁ saṁvidaṁ tena kṛtvā; tathāpi neccheyamiti pratītaḥ.
23. uvāca idam mānuṣāḥ ye ca divyāḥ
prajāpateḥ ye ca lokāḥ mahāntaḥ tān
ca cet labheyam saṃvidam tena kṛtvā
tathā api na iccheyam iti pratītaḥ
23. pratītaḥ idam uvāca: "ye mānuṣāḥ,
ye ca divyāḥ,
prajāpateḥ ye ca mahāntaḥ lokāḥ (santi),
tān ca (lokānām) saṃvidam tena kṛtvā cet labheyam tathā api na iccheyam iti.
"
23. He declared this, convinced: "Even if I were to attain knowledge (saṃvid) regarding these great realms - those of humans, those of divine beings, and those of Prajāpati - even then, I would not desire it."
इन्द्र उवाच ।
पुनर्भवान्पार्थिवं तं समेत्य वाक्यं मदीयं प्रापय स्वार्थयुक्तम् ।
पुनर्यद्युक्तो न करिष्यते वचस्ततो वज्रं संप्रहर्तास्मि तस्मै ॥२४॥
24. indra uvāca ,
punarbhavānpārthivaṁ taṁ sametya; vākyaṁ madīyaṁ prāpaya svārthayuktam ,
punaryadyukto na kariṣyate vaca;stato vajraṁ saṁprahartāsmi tasmai.
24. indraḥ uvāca punaḥ bhavān pārthivam tam
sametya vākyam madīyam prāpaya svārthayuktam
punaḥ yadi uktaḥ na kariṣyate
vacaḥ tataḥ vajram samprahartā asmi tasmai
24. indraḥ uvāca: "bhavān punaḥ tam pārthivam sametya svārthayuktam madīyam vākyam prāpaya.
punaḥ yadi uktaḥ vacaḥ na kariṣyate,
tataḥ tasmāi vajram samprahartā asmi.
"
24. Indra said: "You (honored one) must go again, approach that earthly king, and convey my message, which is for your own benefit. If, again, he does not follow what is said, then I will strike him with the thunderbolt."
अग्निरुवाच ।
गन्धर्वराड्यात्वयं तत्र दूतो बिभेम्यहं वासव तत्र गन्तुम् ।
संरब्धो मामब्रवीत्तीक्ष्णरोषः संवर्तो वाक्यं चरितब्रह्मचर्यः ॥२५॥
25. agniruvāca ,
gandharvarāḍyātvayaṁ tatra dūto; bibhemyahaṁ vāsava tatra gantum ,
saṁrabdho māmabravīttīkṣṇaroṣaḥ; saṁvarto vākyaṁ caritabrahmacaryaḥ.
25. agniḥ uvāca gandharvarājaḥ yātu ayam
tatra dūtaḥ bibhemi aham vāsava tatra
gantum saṃrabdhaḥ mām abravīt tīkṣṇaroṣaḥ
saṃvartaḥ vākyam caritabrahmacaryaḥ
25. agniḥ uvāca: "ayam gandharvarājaḥ tatra dūtaḥ yātu.
he vāsava,
aham tatra gantum bibhemi.
tīkṣṇaroṣaḥ,
caritabrahmacaryaḥ saṃvartaḥ saṃrabdhaḥ (san) mām vākyam abravīt (yathā.
.
.
)"
25. Agni said: "Let this Gandharva king go there as a messenger. O Vāsava (Indra), I am afraid to go there. Saṃvarta, intensely enraged and one who has practiced celibacy (brahmacarya), spoke these words to me."
यद्यागच्छेः पुनरेवं कथंचिद्बृहस्पतिं परिदातुं मरुत्ते ।
दहेयं त्वां चक्षुषा दारुणेन संक्रुद्ध इत्येतदवैहि शक्र ॥२६॥
26. yadyāgaccheḥ punarevaṁ kathaṁci;dbṛhaspatiṁ paridātuṁ marutte ,
daheyaṁ tvāṁ cakṣuṣā dāruṇena; saṁkruddha ityetadavaihi śakra.
26. yadi āgaccheḥ punaḥ evam kathañcit
bṛhaspatim paridātum marute
daheyam tvām cakṣuṣā dāruṇena
saṃkruddhaḥ iti etat avaihi śakra
26. he śakra,
etat avaihi (yat saṃvartaḥ abravīt): "yadi kathañcit evaṃ punaḥ marute bṛhaspatim paridātum āgaccheḥ,
(tarhi) saṃkruddhaḥ aham tvām dāruṇena cakṣuṣā daheyam iti.
"
26. "If you ever come again in this manner, somehow to deliver Bṛhaspati to Marut, I will burn you with my terrible eye, being greatly enraged." Know this as what he said, O Śakra (Indra).
इन्द्र उवाच ।
त्वमेवान्यान्दहसे जातवेदो न हि त्वदन्यो विद्यते भस्मकर्ता ।
त्वत्संस्पर्शात्सर्वलोको बिभेत्यश्रद्धेयं वदसे हव्यवाह ॥२७॥
27. indra uvāca ,
tvamevānyāndahase jātavedo; na hi tvadanyo vidyate bhasmakartā ,
tvatsaṁsparśātsarvaloko bibhe;tyaśraddheyaṁ vadase havyavāha.
27. indraḥ uvāca tvam eva anyān dahase
jātavedaḥ na hi tvat anyaḥ vidyate
bhasmakartā tvatsaṃsparśāt sarvalokaḥ
bibheti aśraddheyam vadase havyavāha
27. indraḥ uvāca jātavedaḥ tvam eva anyān
dahase hi tvat anyaḥ bhasmakartā na
vidyate tvatsaṃsparśāt sarvalokaḥ
bibheti havyavāha aśraddheyam vadase
27. Indra said: "You alone consume others, O Fire (jātavedas); indeed, there is no one else apart from you who can reduce things to ashes. The entire world trembles at your touch. Yet, O carrier of oblations (havyavāh), you speak something unbelievable."
अग्निरुवाच ।
दिवं देवेन्द्र पृथिवीं चैव सर्वां संवेष्टयेस्त्वं स्वबलेनैव शक्र ।
एवंविधस्येह सतस्तवासौ कथं वृत्रस्त्रिदिवं प्राग्जहार ॥२८॥
28. agniruvāca ,
divaṁ devendra pṛthivīṁ caiva sarvāṁ; saṁveṣṭayestvaṁ svabalenaiva śakra ,
evaṁvidhasyeha satastavāsau; kathaṁ vṛtrastridivaṁ prāgjahāra.
28. agniḥ uvāca divam devendra pṛthivīm ca
eva sarvām saṃveṣṭayeḥ tvam svabalena
eva śakra evam vidhasya iha sataḥ tava
asau katham vṛtraḥ tridivam prāk jahāra
28. agniḥ uvāca devendra śakra tvam svabalena
eva divam ca sarvām pṛthivīm eva
saṃveṣṭayeḥ iha evam vidhasya sataḥ tava
asau vṛtraḥ katham prāk tridivam jahāra
28. Agni said: "O Indra, chief of the gods (devendra), O mighty one (śakra), you could indeed envelop the entire heaven and earth with your own strength. How then did Vṛtra previously seize the three worlds (tridivam) from you, who are so powerful and present here?"
इन्द्र उवाच ।
न चण्डिका जङ्गमा नो करेणुर्न वारिसोमं प्रपिबामि वह्ने ।
न दुर्बले वै विसृजामि वज्रं को मेऽसुखाय प्रहरेन्मनुष्यः ॥२९॥
29. indra uvāca ,
na caṇḍikā jaṅgamā no kareṇu;rna vārisomaṁ prapibāmi vahne ,
na durbale vai visṛjāmi vajraṁ; ko me'sukhāya praharenmanuṣyaḥ.
29. indraḥ uvāca na caṇḍikā jaṅgamā no
kareṇuḥ na vārisomam prapibāmi
vahne na durale vai visṛjāmi vajram
kaḥ me asukhāya praharet manuṣyaḥ
29. indraḥ uvāca vahne aham na caṇḍikā
jaṅgamā na kareṇuḥ na vārisomam
prapibāmi vai durale vajram na visṛjāmi
kaḥ manuṣyaḥ me asukhāya praharet
29. Indra said: "O Fire (vahne), I am not a roving goddess Caṇḍikā, nor am I an elephant cow, nor do I drink water-soma. Indeed, I do not hurl my thunderbolt (vajra) at the weak. What mortal would dare strike me to cause me misery?"
प्रव्राजयेयं कालकेयान्पृथिव्यामपाकर्षं दानवानन्तरिक्षात् ।
दिवः प्रह्रादमवसानमानयं को मेऽसुखाय प्रहरेत मर्त्यः ॥३०॥
30. pravrājayeyaṁ kālakeyānpṛthivyā;mapākarṣaṁ dānavānantarikṣāt ,
divaḥ prahrādamavasānamānayaṁ; ko me'sukhāya prahareta martyaḥ.
30. pravrājayeyam kālakeyān pṛthivyām
apākarṣam dānavān antarikṣāt
divaḥ prahlādam avasānam ānayam
kaḥ me asukhāya praharet martyaḥ
30. aham kālakeyān pṛthivyām pravrājayeyam
dānavān antarikṣāt apākarṣam
divaḥ prahlādam avasānam ānayam
kaḥ martyaḥ me asukhāya praharet
30. "I would banish the Kālakeyas from the earth and drag the Dānavas down from the atmosphere. I would bring Prahlāda down from heaven to his demise. What mortal (martya) would dare strike me to cause me misery?"
अग्निरुवाच ।
यत्र शर्यातिं च्यवनो याजयिष्यन्सहाश्विभ्यां सोममगृह्णदेकः ।
तं त्वं क्रुद्धः प्रत्यषेधीः पुरस्ताच्छर्यातियज्ञं स्मर तं महेन्द्र ॥३१॥
31. agniruvāca ,
yatra śaryātiṁ cyavano yājayiṣya;nsahāśvibhyāṁ somamagṛhṇadekaḥ ,
taṁ tvaṁ kruddhaḥ pratyaṣedhīḥ purastā;ccharyātiyajñaṁ smara taṁ mahendra.
31. agniḥ uvāca yatra śaryātim cyavanaḥ
yājayişyan saha aśvibhyām somam agṛhṇat
ekaḥ tam tvam kruddhaḥ pratyaṣedhīḥ
purastāt śaryātīyajñam smara tam mahendra
31. mahendra smara tam yatra cyavanaḥ
yājayişyan śaryātim saha aśvibhyām somam
ekaḥ agṛhṇat tvam kruddhaḥ purastāt
pratyaṣedhīḥ tam śaryātīyajñam agniḥ uvāca
31. Agni spoke: "O great Indra, remember that occasion when Cyavana, while officiating for King Śaryāti in a Vedic ritual (yajña), was about to accept the soma offering for the Aśvins, uniquely. You, becoming enraged, previously obstructed him at that very Vedic ritual (yajña) of Śaryāti."
वज्रं गृहीत्वा च पुरंदर त्वं संप्राहार्षीश्च्यवनस्यातिघोरम् ।
स ते विप्रः सह वज्रेण बाहुमपागृह्णात्तपसा जातमन्युः ॥३२॥
32. vajraṁ gṛhītvā ca puraṁdara tvaṁ; saṁprāhārṣīścyavanasyātighoram ,
sa te vipraḥ saha vajreṇa bāhu;mapāgṛhṇāttapasā jātamanyuḥ.
32. vajram gṛhītvā ca purandara tvam
samprāhārṣīḥ cyavanasya atighoram
saḥ te vipraḥ saha vajreṇa
bāhum apāgṛhṇāt tapasā jātamanuḥ
32. ca purandara tvam vajram gṛhītvā
atighoram samprāhārṣīḥ cyavanasya
saḥ vipraḥ jātamanuḥ tapasā
te bāhum saha vajreṇa apāgṛhṇāt
32. And you, O Purandara, having grasped the thunderbolt, struck Cyavana a most terrible blow. But that sage (vipra), his anger aroused, by means of his ascetic power (tapas), seized your arm along with the thunderbolt.
ततो रोषात्सर्वतो घोररूपं सपत्नं ते जनयामास भूयः ।
मदं नामासुरं विश्वरूपं यं त्वं दृष्ट्वा चक्षुषी संन्यमीलः ॥३३॥
33. tato roṣātsarvato ghorarūpaṁ; sapatnaṁ te janayāmāsa bhūyaḥ ,
madaṁ nāmāsuraṁ viśvarūpaṁ; yaṁ tvaṁ dṛṣṭvā cakṣuṣī saṁnyamīlaḥ.
33. tataḥ roṣāt sarvataḥ ghorarūpam
sapatnam te janayāmāsa bhūyaḥ
madam nāma asuram viśvarūpam yam
tvam dṛṣṭvā cakṣuṣī samnyamīlaḥ
33. tataḥ roṣāt bhūyaḥ te sapatnam ghorarūpam madam nāma asuram
viśvarūpam janayāmāsa yam tvam dṛṣṭvā cakṣuṣī samnyamīlaḥ
33. Then, out of anger, he (Cyavana) again generated for you a dreadful-looking enemy, by name Mada, a demon (asura) of cosmic form, at the sight of whom you closed both your eyes.
हनुरेका जगतीस्था तथैका दिवं गता महतो दानवस्य ।
सहस्रं दन्तानां शतयोजनानां सुतीक्ष्णानां घोररूपं बभूव ॥३४॥
34. hanurekā jagatīsthā tathaikā; divaṁ gatā mahato dānavasya ,
sahasraṁ dantānāṁ śatayojanānāṁ; sutīkṣṇānāṁ ghorarūpaṁ babhūva.
34. hanuḥ ekā jagatīsthā tathā ekā
divam gatā mahataḥ dānavasya
sahasram dantānām śatayojanānām
sutīkṣṇānām ghorarūpam babhūva
34. mahataḥ dānavasya ekā hanuḥ
jagatīsthā tathā ekā divam gatā
sahasram dantānām śatayojanānām
sutīkṣṇānām ghorarūpam babhūva
34. One jaw of that mighty demon (dānava) was situated on the earth, and the other had reached the sky. A thousand teeth, each a hundred yojanas long and exceedingly sharp, became a dreadful sight.
वृत्ताः स्थूला रजतस्तम्भवर्णा दंष्ट्राश्चतस्रो द्वे शते योजनानाम् ।
स त्वां दन्तान्विदशन्नभ्यधावज्जिघांसया शूलमुद्यम्य घोरम् ॥३५॥
35. vṛttāḥ sthūlā rajatastambhavarṇā; daṁṣṭrāścatasro dve śate yojanānām ,
sa tvāṁ dantānvidaśannabhyadhāva;jjighāṁsayā śūlamudyamya ghoram.
35. vṛttāḥ sthūlāḥ rajatastambhavarṇāḥ
daṃṣṭrāḥ catasraḥ dve śate yojanānām
saḥ tvām dantān vidaśan abhyadhāvat
jighāṃsayā śūlam udyamya ghoram
35. catasraḥ daṃṣṭrāḥ vṛttāḥ sthūlāḥ
rajatastambhavarṇāḥ dve śate yojanānām
saḥ tvām dantān vidaśan ghoram
śūlam udyamya jighāṃsayā abhyadhāvat
35. Four tusks, round, thick, and the color of silver pillars, each two hundred *yojanas* long - he rushed towards you, gnashing his teeth, raising a terrible spear with the intention to kill.
अपश्यस्त्वं तं तदा घोररूपं सर्वे त्वन्ये ददृशुर्दर्शनीयम् ।
यस्माद्भीतः प्राञ्जलिस्त्वं महर्षिमागच्छेथाः शरणं दानवघ्न ॥३६॥
36. apaśyastvaṁ taṁ tadā ghorarūpaṁ; sarve tvanye dadṛśurdarśanīyam ,
yasmādbhītaḥ prāñjalistvaṁ maharṣi;māgacchethāḥ śaraṇaṁ dānavaghna.
36. apaśyaḥ tvam tam tadā ghorarūpam
sarve tu anye dadṛśuḥ darśanīyam
yasmāt bhītaḥ prāñjaliḥ tvam maharṣim
āgacchethāḥ śaraṇam dānavaghna
36. dānavaghna tvam tadā tam ghorarūpam
apaśyaḥ tu anye sarve darśanīyam
dadṛśuḥ yasmāt bhītaḥ tvam
prāñjaliḥ śaraṇam maharṣim āgacchethāḥ
36. You then saw him in a terrible form, while all others perceived him as beautiful. Frightened by him, you, with folded hands, approached the great sage for refuge, O slayer of Dānavas.
क्षत्रादेवं ब्रह्मबलं गरीयो न ब्रह्मतः किंचिदन्यद्गरीयः ।
सोऽहं जानन्ब्रह्मतेजो यथावन्न संवर्तं गन्तुमिच्छामि शक्र ॥३७॥
37. kṣatrādevaṁ brahmabalaṁ garīyo; na brahmataḥ kiṁcidanyadgarīyaḥ ,
so'haṁ jānanbrahmatejo yathāva;nna saṁvartaṁ gantumicchāmi śakra.
37. kṣatrāt evam brahmabalam garīyaḥ na
brahmatas kiñcit anyat garīyaḥ
saḥ aham jānan brahmatejaḥ yathāvat
na saṃvartam gantum icchāmi śakra
37. evam kṣatrāt brahmabalam garīyaḥ
brahmatas kiñcit anyat na garīyaḥ
śakra saḥ aham yathāvat brahmatejaḥ
jānan saṃvartam gantum na icchāmi
37. Thus, the power of (brahman) is superior to that of the warrior (kṣatra); nothing else is superior to (brahman). Therefore, O Indra, knowing the spiritual power (brahma-tejas) as it truly is, I do not wish to face destruction.
