गन्धर्व उवाच ।
अथ तस्यामदृश्यायां नृपतिः काममोहितः ।
पातनः शत्रुसंघानां पपात धरणीतले ॥१॥
1. gandharva uvāca ,
atha tasyāmadṛśyāyāṁ nṛpatiḥ kāmamohitaḥ ,
pātanaḥ śatrusaṁghānāṁ papāta dharaṇītale.
1. gandharvaḥ uvāca atha tasyām adṛśyāyām nṛpatiḥ
kāma-mohitaḥ pātanaḥ śatru-saṅghānām papāta dharaṇī-tale
1. The Gandharva said: Then, when she had vanished from sight, the king, utterly bewildered by desire, he who was known as the destroyer of enemy hordes, collapsed onto the ground.
तस्मिन्निपतिते भूमावथ सा चारुहासिनी ।
पुनः पीनायतश्रोणी दर्शयामास तं नृपम् ॥२॥
2. tasminnipatite bhūmāvatha sā cāruhāsinī ,
punaḥ pīnāyataśroṇī darśayāmāsa taṁ nṛpam.
2. tasmin nipatite bhūmau atha sā cāruhāsinī
punaḥ pīnāyataśroṇī darśayāmāsa tam nṛpam
2. Then, after he had fallen to the ground, she, the lovely-smiling woman with ample and broad hips, again revealed herself to the king.
अथाबभाषे कल्याणी वाचा मधुरया नृपम् ।
तं कुरूणां कुलकरं कामाभिहतचेतसम् ॥३॥
3. athābabhāṣe kalyāṇī vācā madhurayā nṛpam ,
taṁ kurūṇāṁ kulakaraṁ kāmābhihatacetasam.
3. atha ābabhāṣe kalyāṇī vācā madhurayā nṛpam
tam kurūṇām kulakaram kāmābhihatacetasam
3. Then, the beautiful woman spoke to the king with a sweet voice, addressing him, the progenitor of the Kuru lineage, whose heart was overwhelmed by desire.
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ भद्रं ते न त्वमर्हस्यरिंदम ।
मोहं नृपतिशार्दूल गन्तुमाविष्कृतः क्षितौ ॥४॥
4. uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha bhadraṁ te na tvamarhasyariṁdama ,
mohaṁ nṛpatiśārdūla gantumāviṣkṛtaḥ kṣitau.
4. uttiṣṭha uttiṣṭha bhadram te na tvam arhasi arindama
moham nṛpatiśārdūla gantum āviṣkṛtaḥ kṣitau
4. Rise, rise! May all be well with you, O vanquisher of foes (arindama)! O tiger among kings (nṛpatiśārdūla), you should not succumb to unconsciousness now that you have appeared on earth.
एवमुक्तोऽथ नृपतिर्वाचा मधुरया तदा ।
ददर्श विपुलश्रोणीं तामेवाभिमुखे स्थिताम् ॥५॥
5. evamukto'tha nṛpatirvācā madhurayā tadā ,
dadarśa vipulaśroṇīṁ tāmevābhimukhe sthitām.
5. evam uktaḥ atha nṛpatiḥ vācā madhurayā tadā
dadarśa vipulaśroṇīm tām eva abhimukhe sthitām
5. Then, thus addressed by her sweet voice, the king beheld her, the one with ample hips, standing directly before him.
अथ तामसितापाङ्गीमाबभाषे नराधिपः ।
मन्मथाग्निपरीतात्मा संदिग्धाक्षरया गिरा ॥६॥
6. atha tāmasitāpāṅgīmābabhāṣe narādhipaḥ ,
manmathāgniparītātmā saṁdigdhākṣarayā girā.
6. atha tām asitāpāṅgīm ābabhāṣe narādhipaḥ
manmathāgniparītātmā saṃdigdhākṣarayā girā
6. Then the king (narādhipaḥ), his spirit (ātman) consumed by the fire of passion (manmathāgni), spoke to her, the one with dark-cornered eyes (asitāpāṅgī), with faltering and indistinct words.
साधु मामसितापाङ्गे कामार्तं मत्तकाशिनि ।
भजस्व भजमानं मां प्राणा हि प्रजहन्ति माम् ॥७॥
7. sādhu māmasitāpāṅge kāmārtaṁ mattakāśini ,
bhajasva bhajamānaṁ māṁ prāṇā hi prajahanti mām.
7. sādhu mām asitāpāṅge kāmārtam mattakāśini
bhajasva bhajamānam mām prāṇāḥ hi prajahanti mām
7. O lady with dark eye-corners (asitāpāṅge) and intoxicating radiance (mattakāśini), please kindly accept me, who is tormented by desire (kāmārta) and devoted to you. Indeed, my very life breaths (prāṇā) will abandon me.
त्वदर्थं हि विशालाक्षि मामयं निशितैः शरैः ।
कामः कमलगर्भाभे प्रतिविध्यन्न शाम्यति ॥८॥
8. tvadarthaṁ hi viśālākṣi māmayaṁ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ,
kāmaḥ kamalagarbhābhe pratividhyanna śāmyati.
8. tvadartham hi viśālākṣi mām ayam niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ
kāmaḥ kamalagarbhābhe pratividhyan na śāmyati
8. Indeed, O lady with wide eyes (viśālākṣi), O lady with the radiance of a lotus's heart (kamalagarbhābhe), it is for your sake that this god of love (Kāma) ceaselessly pierces me with his sharp arrows and does not calm down.
ग्रस्तमेवमनाक्रन्दे भद्रे काममहाहिना ।
सा त्वं पीनायतश्रोणि पर्याप्नुहि शुभानने ॥९॥
9. grastamevamanākrande bhadre kāmamahāhinā ,
sā tvaṁ pīnāyataśroṇi paryāpnuhi śubhānane.
9. grastam evam anākrande bhadre kāmamahāhinā
sā tvam pīnāyataśroṇi paryāpnuhi śubhānane
9. O good lady (bhadre), O one without a cry of distress (anākrande), I am thus consumed by the great serpent of desire (Kāma). Therefore, O you with plump and broad hips (pīnāyataśroṇi), O beautiful-faced one (śubhānane), please accept me.
त्वय्यधीना हि मे प्राणाः किंनरोद्गीतभाषिणि ।
चारुसर्वानवद्याङ्गि पद्मेन्दुसदृशानने ॥१०॥
10. tvayyadhīnā hi me prāṇāḥ kiṁnarodgītabhāṣiṇi ,
cārusarvānavadyāṅgi padmendusadṛśānane.
10. tvayi adhīnāḥ hi me prāṇāḥ kinnarotgītabhāṣiṇi
cārusarvānavadyāṅgi padmendusa dṛśānane
10. Indeed, my very life (prāṇā) is dependent on you, O lady whose speech is like the songs of the Kinnaras (kinnarotgītabhāṣiṇī), O lady whose every limb is beautiful and faultless (cārusarvānavadyāṅgi), O lady whose face resembles a lotus and the moon (padmendusadṛśānan).
न ह्यहं त्वदृते भीरु शक्ष्ये जीवितुमात्मना ।
तस्मात्कुरु विशालाक्षि मय्यनुक्रोशमङ्गने ॥११॥
11. na hyahaṁ tvadṛte bhīru śakṣye jīvitumātmanā ,
tasmātkuru viśālākṣi mayyanukrośamaṅgane.
11. na hi aham tvadṛte bhīru śakṣye jīvitum ātmanā
tasmāt kuru viśālākṣi mayi anukrośam aṅgane
11. Indeed, O timid one (bhīru), I cannot live by myself (ātman) without you. Therefore, O wide-eyed lady (viśālākṣi), O beautiful lady (aṅgane), show me compassion.
भक्तं मामसितापाङ्गे न परित्यक्तुमर्हसि ।
त्वं हि मां प्रीतियोगेन त्रातुमर्हसि भामिनि ॥१२॥
12. bhaktaṁ māmasitāpāṅge na parityaktumarhasi ,
tvaṁ hi māṁ prītiyogena trātumarhasi bhāmini.
12. bhaktam mām asitāpāṅge na parityaktum arhasi
tvam hi mām prīti-yogena trātum arhasi bhāmini
12. O dark-eyed one (asitāpāṅge), you ought not to abandon me, your devotee. Indeed, O beautiful one (bhāmini), you ought to protect me through the bond of love (prīti-yoga).
गान्धर्वेण च मां भीरु विवाहेनैहि सुन्दरि ।
विवाहानां हि रम्भोरु गान्धर्वः श्रेष्ठ उच्यते ॥१३॥
13. gāndharveṇa ca māṁ bhīru vivāhenaihi sundari ,
vivāhānāṁ hi rambhoru gāndharvaḥ śreṣṭha ucyate.
13. gāndharveṇa ca mām bhīru vivāhena ehi sundari
vivāhānām hi rambhoru gāndharvaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ ucyate
13. O timid one (bhīru), O beautiful one (sundari), come to me through the Gandharva marriage. For indeed, O lotus-thighed one (rambhoru), the Gandharva marriage is declared to be the best among all types of marriages.
तपत्युवाच ।
नाहमीशात्मनो राजन्कन्या पितृमती ह्यहम् ।
मयि चेदस्ति ते प्रीतिर्याचस्व पितरं मम ॥१४॥
14. tapatyuvāca ,
nāhamīśātmano rājankanyā pitṛmatī hyaham ,
mayi cedasti te prītiryācasva pitaraṁ mama.
14. tapatī uvāca na aham īśā ātmanaḥ rājan kanyā pitṛmatī
hi aham mayi cet asti te prītiḥ yācasva pitaram mama
14. Taptī said: "O king (rājan), I am not mistress of myself. For I am a maiden who has a father. If you have love (prīti) for me, then ask my father."
यथा हि ते मया प्राणाः संगृहीता नरेश्वर ।
दर्शनादेव भूयस्त्वं तथा प्राणान्ममाहरः ॥१५॥
15. yathā hi te mayā prāṇāḥ saṁgṛhītā nareśvara ,
darśanādeva bhūyastvaṁ tathā prāṇānmamāharaḥ.
15. yathā hi te mayā prāṇāḥ saṃgṛhītā nara-īśvara
darśanāt eva bhūyas tvam tathā prāṇān mama āharaḥ
15. O lord of men (nareśvara), just as my sight captivated your vital breaths (prāṇa), so too, merely by your gaze, you have now taken my vital breaths (prāṇa) in return.
न चाहमीशा देहस्य तस्मान्नृपतिसत्तम ।
समीपं नोपगच्छामि न स्वतन्त्रा हि योषितः ॥१६॥
16. na cāhamīśā dehasya tasmānnṛpatisattama ,
samīpaṁ nopagacchāmi na svatantrā hi yoṣitaḥ.
16. na ca aham īśā dehasya tasmāt nṛpati-sattama
samīpam na upagacchāmi na svatantrā hi yoṣitaḥ
16. And I am not mistress of this body. Therefore, O best of kings (nṛpati-sattama), I will not approach you, for women are indeed not independent.
का हि सर्वेषु लोकेषु विश्रुताभिजनं नृपम् ।
कन्या नाभिलषेन्नाथं भर्तारं भक्तवत्सलम् ॥१७॥
17. kā hi sarveṣu lokeṣu viśrutābhijanaṁ nṛpam ,
kanyā nābhilaṣennāthaṁ bhartāraṁ bhaktavatsalam.
17. kā hi sarveṣu lokeṣu viśrutābhijanam nṛpam kanyā
na abhilaṣeta nātham bhartāram bhaktavatsalam
17. Indeed, which maiden in all the worlds would not desire as a husband a king of renowned lineage, a lord who is affectionate towards his devotees/subjects?
तस्मादेवंगते काले याचस्व पितरं मम ।
आदित्यं प्रणिपातेन तपसा नियमेन च ॥१८॥
18. tasmādevaṁgate kāle yācasva pitaraṁ mama ,
ādityaṁ praṇipātena tapasā niyamena ca.
18. tasmāt evam gate kāle yācasva pitaram mama
ādityam praṇipātena tapasā niyamena ca
18. Therefore, under these circumstances, implore my father, the Sun God (āditya), with prostration, with asceticism (tapas), and with self-control.
स चेत्कामयते दातुं तव मामरिमर्दन ।
भविष्याम्यथ ते राजन्सततं वशवर्तिनी ॥१९॥
19. sa cetkāmayate dātuṁ tava māmarimardana ,
bhaviṣyāmyatha te rājansatataṁ vaśavartinī.
19. sa cet kāmayate dātum tava mām arimardana
bhaviṣyāmi atha te rājan satatam vaśavartinī
19. O vanquisher of enemies, if he (my father) desires to give me to you, then, O king, I will always remain obedient to your will.
अहं हि तपती नाम सावित्र्यवरजा सुता ।
अस्य लोकप्रदीपस्य सवितुः क्षत्रियर्षभ ॥२०॥
20. ahaṁ hi tapatī nāma sāvitryavarajā sutā ,
asya lokapradīpasya savituḥ kṣatriyarṣabha.
20. aham hi tapatī nāma sāvitrī-avarajā sutā
asya lokapradīpasya savituḥ kṣatriya-ṛṣabha
20. O best of kṣatriyas, I am indeed named Tapati, the younger sister of Savitri, and the daughter of this lamp of the world, Savitṛ (the Sun God).
