युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
के लोका युध्यमानानां शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम् ।
भवन्ति निधनं प्राप्य तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१॥

Yudhiṣṭhira said: O Grandfather, tell me, what realms do those brave warriors attain who fight without turning back and meet their death?
भीष्म उवाच ।

अम्बरीषस्य संवादमिन्द्रस्य च युधिष्ठिर ॥२॥

Bhīṣma said: O Yudhiṣṭhira, in this context, they also recount this ancient legend, the conversation between Ambarīṣa and Indra.
अम्बरीषो हि नाभागः स्वर्गं गत्वा सुदुर्लभम् ।
ददर्श सुरलोकस्थं शक्रेण सचिवं सह ॥३॥

Indeed, Ambarīṣa, the son of Nābhāga, having reached the heaven that is very difficult to attain, saw a minister residing in the world of gods, accompanied by Śakra (Indra).
सर्वतेजोमयं दिव्यं विमानवरमास्थितम् ।
उपर्युपरि गच्छन्तं स्वं वै सेनापतिं प्रभुम् ॥४॥

He saw his own mighty commander, divine and radiant with all splendor, seated in a splendid aerial car, ascending higher and higher.
स दृष्ट्वोपरि गच्छन्तं सेनापतिमुदारधीः ।
ऋद्धिं दृष्ट्वा सुदेवस्य विस्मितः प्राह वासवम् ॥५॥

That high-minded one, having seen the commander (senāpati) ascending and having witnessed Sudeva's prosperity (ṛddhi), was astonished and spoke to Vāsava (Indra).
सागरान्तां महीं कृत्स्नामनुशिष्य यथाविधि ।
चातुर्वर्ण्ये यथाशास्त्रं प्रवृत्तो धर्मकाम्यया ॥६॥

6. sāgarāntāṁ mahīṁ kṛtsnāmanuśiṣya yathāvidhi ,

Having properly governed the entire earth, which is bounded by the oceans, he engaged himself according to the scriptures in the four social orders (cāturvarṇya), out of a desire for righteousness (dharma).

Having studied the Vedas and solely political science, righteously (dharma), through severe celibacy (brahmacarya) and service to the teacher's (ācārya) family.
अतिथीनन्नपानेन पितॄंश्च स्वधया तथा ।
ऋषीन्स्वाध्यायदीक्षाभिर्देवान्यज्ञैरनुत्तमैः ॥८॥

8. atithīnannapānena pitṝṁśca svadhayā tathā ,

Guests (were honored) with food and drink; ancestors with svadhā offerings; similarly, sages (were honored) through vows of self-study (svādhyāya) and gods with excellent Vedic rituals (yajña).
क्षत्रधर्मे स्थितो भूत्वा यथाशास्त्रं यथाविधि ।
उदीक्षमाणः पृतनां जयामि युधि वासव ॥९॥

9. kṣatradharme sthito bhūtvā yathāśāstraṁ yathāvidhi ,

O Vasava, having firmly established myself in the intrinsic nature (dharma) of a warrior, in accordance with the scriptures and proper procedure, I will conquer the army that I face in battle.
देवराज सुदेवोऽयं मम सेनापतिः पुरा ।
आसीद्योधः प्रशान्तात्मा सोऽयं कस्मादतीव माम् ॥१०॥

10. devarāja sudevo'yaṁ mama senāpatiḥ purā ,

O King of gods, this Sudeva was formerly my general, a warrior with a very tranquil spirit (ātman). Why does this very man now behave so exceedingly towards me?
नानेन क्रतुभिर्मुख्यैरिष्टं नैव द्विजातयः ।
तर्पिता विधिवच्छक्र सोऽयं कस्मादतीव माम् ॥११॥

11. nānena kratubhirmukhyairiṣṭaṁ naiva dvijātayaḥ ,
tarpitā vidhivacchakra so'yaṁ kasmādatīva mām.

na anena kratubhiḥ mukhyaiḥ iṣṭam na eva dvijātayaḥ

śakra anena mukhyaiḥ kratubhiḥ na eva iṣṭam na

O Shakra, by him neither were principal Vedic rituals (kratu) performed, nor were Brahmins (dvijātayaḥ) propitiated according to proper procedure. So why does this very man now behave so exceedingly towards me?
इन्द्र उवाच ।
एतस्य विततस्तात सुदेवस्य बभूव ह ।
संग्रामयज्ञः सुमहान्यश्चान्यो युध्यते नरः ॥१२॥

etasya vitatastāta sudevasya babhūva ha ,
saṁgrāmayajñaḥ sumahānyaścānyo yudhyate naraḥ.

indraḥ uvāca etasya vitataḥ tāta sudevasya babhūva ha

indraḥ uvāca tāta etasya sudevasya sumahān vitataḥ
saṃgrāmayajñaḥ babhūva ha yaḥ ca anyaḥ naraḥ yudhyate

12.
Indra said: "O dear one, a very great battle (yajña) of this Sudeva indeed occurred, as it does for any other man who fights."
संनद्धो दीक्षितः सर्वो योधः प्राप्य चमूमुखम् ।
युद्धयज्ञाधिकारस्थो भवतीति विनिश्चयः ॥१३॥

13. saṁnaddho dīkṣitaḥ sarvo yodhaḥ prāpya camūmukham ,
yuddhayajñādhikārastho bhavatīti viniścayaḥ.

sarvaḥ yodhaḥ saṃnaddhaḥ dīkṣitaḥ camūmukham prāpya

Every warrior, fully prepared and consecrated (dīkṣita), upon reaching the vanguard of the army, becomes one who holds the authority to perform the Vedic ritual (yajña) of battle. This is a definite conclusion.
अम्बरीष उवाच ।
कानि यज्ञे हवींष्यत्र किमाज्यं का च दक्षिणा ।
ऋत्विजश्चात्र के प्रोक्तास्तन्मे ब्रूहि शतक्रतो ॥१४॥

14. ambarīṣa uvāca ,
kāni yajñe havīṁṣyatra kimājyaṁ kā ca dakṣiṇā ,
ṛtvijaścātra ke proktāstanme brūhi śatakrato.

14.
ambarīṣaḥ uvāca he śatakrato,
atra yajñe kāni havīṃṣi,
kim ājyam,
kā ca dakṣiṇā (bhavati)? atra ke ṛtvijaḥ ca proktāḥ (santi)? tat me brūhi.
atra yajñe kāni havīṃṣi,
kim ājyam,
kā ca dakṣiṇā (bhavati)? atra ke ṛtvijaḥ ca proktāḥ (santi)? tat me brūhi.
14.
Ambarīṣa said: What are the oblations (havis) in this Vedic ritual (yajña)? What is the clarified butter (ājya), and what is the sacrificial fee (dakṣiṇā)? Who are said to be the priests (ṛtvij) here? Tell me that, O Śatakratu.
इन्द्र उवाच ।
ऋत्विजः कुञ्जरास्तत्र वाजिनोऽध्वर्यवस्तथा ।
हवींषि परमांसानि रुधिरं त्वाज्यमेव च ॥१५॥
ऋत्विजः कुञ्जरास्तत्र वाजिनोऽध्वर्यवस्तथा ।
हवींषि परमांसानि रुधिरं त्वाज्यमेव च ॥१५॥
15. indra uvāca ,
ṛtvijaḥ kuñjarāstatra vājino'dhvaryavastathā ,
havīṁṣi paramāṁsāni rudhiraṁ tvājyameva ca.
ṛtvijaḥ kuñjarāstatra vājino'dhvaryavastathā ,
havīṁṣi paramāṁsāni rudhiraṁ tvājyameva ca.

indraḥ uvāca ṛtvijaḥ kuñjarāḥ tatra vājinaḥ adhvaryavaḥ
tathā havīṃṣi paramāṃsāni rudhiram tu ājyam eva ca
tathā havīṃṣi paramāṃsāni rudhiram tu ājyam eva ca

indraḥ uvāca tatra kuñjarāḥ ṛtvijaḥ (santi),
tathā vājinaḥ adhvaryavaḥ (santi).

Indra said: There, the elephants (kuñjara) are the priests (ṛtvij), and likewise, the horses (vājin) are the adhvaryu priests. The oblations (havis) are prime meats, and blood (rudhira) is indeed the clarified butter (ājya).
सृगालगृध्रकाकोलाः सदस्यास्तत्र सत्रिणः ।
आज्यशेषं पिबन्त्येते हविः प्राश्नन्ति चाध्वरे ॥१६॥

16. sṛgālagṛdhrakākolāḥ sadasyāstatra satriṇaḥ ,
ājyaśeṣaṁ pibantyete haviḥ prāśnanti cādhvare.

16.
Jackals, vultures, and owls are the members and participants (sattrin) there. These drink the remnant of the clarified butter (ājya) and eat the oblation (havis) in the sacrifice (adhvara).
प्रासतोमरसंघाताः खड्गशक्तिपरश्वधाः ।
ज्वलन्तो निशिताः पीताः स्रुचस्तस्याथ सत्रिणः ॥१७॥

17. prāsatomarasaṁghātāḥ khaḍgaśaktiparaśvadhāḥ ,
jvalanto niśitāḥ pītāḥ srucastasyātha satriṇaḥ.

prāsa-tomara-saṅghātāḥ khaḍga-śakti-paraśvadhāḥ

atha tasya satriṇaḥ jvalantaḥ niśitāḥ pītāḥ
prāsa-tomara-saṅghātāḥ khaḍga-śakti-paraśvadhāḥ srucaḥ
prāsa-tomara-saṅghātāḥ khaḍga-śakti-paraśvadhāḥ srucaḥ
17.
Now, the clusters of spears and javelins, along with swords, lances, and battle-axes, which are blazing, sharpened, and polished, serve as the sacrificial ladles (sruc) of that sacrificer (satrin).
चापवेगायतस्तीक्ष्णः परकायावदारणः ।
ऋजुः सुनिशितः पीतः सायकोऽस्य स्रुवो महान् ॥१८॥

18. cāpavegāyatastīkṣṇaḥ parakāyāvadāraṇaḥ ,
ṛjuḥ suniśitaḥ pītaḥ sāyako'sya sruvo mahān.

cāpa-vega-āyataḥ tīkṣṇaḥ para-kāya-avadāraṇaḥ

ṛjuḥ su-niśitaḥ pītaḥ sāyakaḥ asya sruvaḥ mahān
18.
asya sāyakaḥ cāpa-vega-āyataḥ tīkṣṇaḥ
para-kāya-avadāraṇaḥ ṛjuḥ su-niśitaḥ pītaḥ mahān sruvaḥ
para-kāya-avadāraṇaḥ ṛjuḥ su-niśitaḥ pītaḥ mahān sruvaḥ
18.
His arrow, impelled by the bow's force, keen, tearing apart enemies' bodies, straight, very sharp, and gleaming, is a great sacrificial spoon (sruva).
द्वीपिचर्मावनद्धश्च नागदन्तकृतत्सरुः ।
हस्तिहस्तगतः खड्गः स्फ्यो भवेत्तस्य संयुगे ॥१९॥

19. dvīpicarmāvanaddhaśca nāgadantakṛtatsaruḥ ,
hastihastagataḥ khaḍgaḥ sphyo bhavettasya saṁyuge.

dvīpi-carma-avanaddhaḥ ca nāga-danta-kṛta-tsaruḥ

19.
ca tasya saṃyuge dvīpi-carma-avanaddhaḥ nāga-danta-kṛta-tsaruḥ

And his sword, which is covered with leopard skin and has a hilt made of elephant tusk, when wielded by one from an elephant, would become the sacrificial spatula (sphya) for him in combat.

Through blazing, sharpened, and polished spears, lances, and battle-axes - which are crafted from steel and are keen - an attack would prove valuable.

Indeed, the blood that flows on the earth during battle, shed with passionate intensity, that is his complete oblation (pūrṇāhuti), which, like an offering (hotṛ), is abundant and grants all desires.

For the warrior whose commands 'Cut!' and 'Break!' are heard at the forefront of the army, the chanters of the Sama Veda sing his praises (sāmāni) in the abode of Yama.

They call the front of the enemy army its 'place of offerings' (havirdhāna). It is a collection of elephants, horses, and armored warriors. The fire altar known as Śyenacita is prescribed for his Vedic ritual (yajña).

Here, the headless body (kabandha) that rises up when thousands are slain – that, indeed, is called the eight-cornered (aṣṭāśri) sacrificial post (yūpa) made of Khadira wood for that hero.

O king, the elephants, driven by goads, roar as if summoned by offerings. With the resounding sound of palms and the ritual exclamation, the war drum in that battle is considered the Udgātṛ priest, who chants three Sāmans.

He who, when a Brahmin's property is being stolen, abandons his dear body in battle, having erected himself as the sacrificial post (yūpa), performs a Vedic ritual (yajña) with infinite offerings (dakṣiṇā).

This army-river, whose banners and flags are its willows, which consists of slain vehicles, and whose waters are blood; it is completely full, and difficult for men attempting to cross it to traverse.

This river, whose mighty crocodiles are slain elephants, is inauspicious and carries (souls) to the other world. Its banks are spears, swords, and banners, and its rafts (or 'birds' of prey) are vultures, kites, and other carrion birds.

This river, characterized by the deeds of man-eaters, brings confusion to the fearful. In the great sacrificial ritual (yajña) of warriors, this (river) is considered its concluding purifying bath (avabhṛtha).

For the one whose front ranks of enemy armies are made into a wife's chamber (patnīśālā), and whose own armies serve as the place for sacrificial offerings (havirdhāna) – that, the wise declare, belongs to him.

The sacrificial hall (sadas) is considered the internal fire of the warriors, and the āgnīdhra (priest/altar) is the northern direction. All worlds are close at hand (adūrataḥ) from the position of the enemy army's vulnerable rear (kalatra).

When the battle array (vyūha) on both sides extends with the sky as its front, that (battlefield) becomes his altar (vedī); and similarly, in a (sacrificial) ritual (yajña), the Vedas are perpetually considered the three fires.
यस्तु योधः परावृत्तः संत्रस्तो हन्यते परैः ।
अप्रतिष्ठं स नरकं याति नास्त्यत्र संशयः ॥३९॥

But whichever warrior, having retreated and being terrified, is killed by enemies, he goes to an unending hell (narakam); there is no doubt about this.

The warrior whose blood, with its force, causes a river to be flooded and strewn with hair, flesh, and bones, he would attain the supreme state (paramām gatim).

Indeed, the one who, having killed the enemy commander, mounts his chariot, that person displays the mighty stride of Vishnu and possesses wisdom (kratu) equal to Brihaspati.

One should never grieve for a hero slain in battle. For a hero killed (hata) in battle is indeed not to be grieved for; he is glorified in the heaven world.

Indeed, for the one slain (hata), no offerings of food, no water, no ritual bathing, nor even a period of ritual impurity (aśauca) is desired to be performed. Now, hear from me about the worlds (lokāḥ) he attains.

Thousands of excellent celestial nymphs, hurrying, indeed run towards a hero slain in battle, thinking, "He shall become my husband!"

An aged army should not be killed, nor a woman, nor a Brahmin (dvija); and whoever says, "I am yours," with a mouth full of grass (a sign of surrender), should indeed not be killed.

I [defeated] Vṛtra, Bala, Pāka, Virocana who possessed a hundred illusions (māyā), and the irresistible Namuci, and Śambara who possessed many illusions (māyā).

Having slain Vipracitti, the Daitya, along with all the sons of Danu and also Prahlada, in battle, I then became the lord of the gods.
