नारद उवाच ।
आविष्कृतबलं कर्णं ज्ञात्वा राजा तु मागधः ।
आह्वयद्द्वैरथेनाजौ जरासंधो महीपतिः ॥१॥
1. nārada uvāca ,
āviṣkṛtabalaṁ karṇaṁ jñātvā rājā tu māgadhaḥ ,
āhvayaddvairathenājau jarāsaṁdho mahīpatiḥ.

1. Nārada said: Knowing Karṇa's revealed strength, Jarāsandha, the king of Magadha and lord of the earth, challenged him to a duel in battle.
तयोः समभवद्युद्धं दिव्यास्त्रविदुषोर्द्वयोः ।
युधि नानाप्रहरणैरन्योन्यमभिवर्षतोः ॥२॥
2. tayoḥ samabhavadyuddhaṁ divyāstraviduṣordvayoḥ ,
yudhi nānāpraharaṇairanyonyamabhivarṣatoḥ.
2. tayoḥ samabhavat yuddham divyāstraviduṣoḥ dvayoḥ
yudhi nānāpraharanaiḥ anyonyam abhivarṣatoḥ
2. tayoḥ divyāstraviduṣoḥ dvayoḥ yudhi nānāpraharanaiḥ

2. A fierce battle occurred between those two, both experts in divine weapons, as they showered each other with various weapons.
क्षीणबाणौ विधनुषौ भग्नखड्गौ महीं गतौ ।
बाहुभिः समसज्जेतामुभावपि बलान्वितौ ॥३॥
3. kṣīṇabāṇau vidhanuṣau bhagnakhaḍgau mahīṁ gatau ,
bāhubhiḥ samasajjetāmubhāvapi balānvitau.

bāhubhiḥ samasajjetām ubhāv api balānvitau

3. With their arrows depleted, bows broken, and swords shattered, both warriors fell to the ground. Then, endowed with strength, they engaged in combat using their bare arms.
बाहुकण्टकयुद्धेन तस्य कर्णोऽथ युध्यतः ।
बिभेद संधिं देहस्य जरया श्लेषितस्य ह ॥४॥
4. bāhukaṇṭakayuddhena tasya karṇo'tha yudhyataḥ ,
bibheda saṁdhiṁ dehasya jarayā śleṣitasya ha.
4. bāhukaṇṭakayuddhena tasya karṇaḥ atha yudhyataḥ
bibheda sandhim dehasya jarayā śleṣitasya ha
4. atha karṇaḥ bāhukaṇṭakayuddhena yudhyataḥ tasya
dehasya jarayā śleṣitasya sandhim bibheda ha
4. Then, while he (Jarāsandha) was fighting, Karṇa, through arm-to-arm combat, tore apart the joint of his body, which had been weakened by old age.
स विकारं शरीरस्य दृष्ट्वा नृपतिरात्मनः ।
प्रीतोऽस्मीत्यब्रवीत्कर्णं वैरमुत्सृज्य भारत ॥५॥
5. sa vikāraṁ śarīrasya dṛṣṭvā nṛpatirātmanaḥ ,
prīto'smītyabravītkarṇaṁ vairamutsṛjya bhārata.
5. saḥ vikāram śarīrasya dṛṣṭvā nṛpatiḥ ātmanaḥ prītaḥ
asmi iti abravīt karṇam vairam utsṛjya bhārata
5. saḥ nṛpatiḥ ātmanaḥ śarīrasya vikāram dṛṣṭvā vairam
utsṛjya karṇam prītaḥ asmi iti abravīt bhārata
5. O descendant of Bharata, the king, having observed an injury to his own body (ātman), abandoned his hostility and declared to Karna, 'I am pleased.'
प्रीत्या ददौ स कर्णाय मालिनीं नगरीमथ ।
अङ्गेषु नरशार्दूल स राजासीत्सपत्नजित् ॥६॥
6. prītyā dadau sa karṇāya mālinīṁ nagarīmatha ,
aṅgeṣu naraśārdūla sa rājāsītsapatnajit.
6. prītyā dadau saḥ karṇāya mālinīm nagarīm atha
aṅgeṣu naraśārdūla saḥ rājā āsīt sapatnajit
6. atha saḥ rājā prītyā karṇāya mālinīm nagarīm
dadau naraśārdūla aṅgeṣu saḥ sapatnajit āsīt
6. Then, out of affection, that king gave the city of Malini to Karna. O tiger among men, that king (Duryodhana) became a vanquisher of rivals in Anga.
पालयामास चम्पां तु कर्णः परबलार्दनः ।
दुर्योधनस्यानुमते तवापि विदितं तथा ॥७॥
7. pālayāmāsa campāṁ tu karṇaḥ parabalārdanaḥ ,
duryodhanasyānumate tavāpi viditaṁ tathā.
7. pālayāmāsa campām tu karṇaḥ parabalārdanaḥ
duryodhanasya anumate tava api viditam tathā
7. tu parabalārdanaḥ karṇaḥ duryodhanasya anumate
campām pālayāmāsa tathā tava api viditam
7. Indeed, Karna, the tormentor of enemy forces, ruled Champa with Duryodhana's permission. And this, likewise, is known to you.
एवं शस्त्रप्रतापेन प्रथितः सोऽभवत्क्षितौ ।
त्वद्धितार्थं सुरेन्द्रेण भिक्षितो वर्मकुण्डले ॥८॥
8. evaṁ śastrapratāpena prathitaḥ so'bhavatkṣitau ,
tvaddhitārthaṁ surendreṇa bhikṣito varmakuṇḍale.
8. evam śastrapratāpena prathitaḥ saḥ abhavat kṣitau
tvad-hitārtham surendreṇa bhikṣitaḥ varma-kuṇḍale
8. evam saḥ śastrapratāpena kṣitau prathitaḥ abhavat
tvad-hitārtham surendreṇa varma-kuṇḍale bhikṣitaḥ
8. Thus, by the might of his weapons, he became renowned on earth. For your welfare, the lord of gods, Indra, begged him for his armor and earrings.
स दिव्ये सहजे प्रादात्कुण्डले परमार्चिते ।
सहजं कवचं चैव मोहितो देवमायया ॥९॥
9. sa divye sahaje prādātkuṇḍale paramārcite ,
sahajaṁ kavacaṁ caiva mohito devamāyayā.
9. sa divye sahaje prādāt kuṇḍale paramārcite
sahajaṃ kavacaṃ ca eva mohitaḥ devamāyayā
9. sa devamāyayā mohitaḥ divye sahaje paramārcite
kuṇḍale ca sahajaṃ kavacaṃ eva prādāt
9. He, bewildered by the divine illusion (māyā), gave away his divine, innate, and supremely radiant earrings, and also his innate armor.
विमुक्तः कुण्डलाभ्यां च सहजेन च वर्मणा ।
निहतो विजयेनाजौ वासुदेवस्य पश्यतः ॥१०॥
10. vimuktaḥ kuṇḍalābhyāṁ ca sahajena ca varmaṇā ,
nihato vijayenājau vāsudevasya paśyataḥ.
10. vimuktaḥ kuṇḍalābhyām ca sahajena ca varmaṇā
nihataḥ vijayena ājau vāsudevasya paśyataḥ
10. saḥ kuṇḍalābhyām ca sahajena varmaṇā ca vimuktaḥ
vāsudevasya paśyataḥ ājau vijayena nihataḥ
10. Freed from both his earrings and his innate armor, he was killed in battle by Arjuna (Vijaya) while Vāsudeva (Krishna) watched.
ब्राह्मणस्याभिशापेन रामस्य च महात्मनः ।
कुन्त्याश्च वरदानेन मायया च शतक्रतोः ॥११॥
11. brāhmaṇasyābhiśāpena rāmasya ca mahātmanaḥ ,
kuntyāśca varadānena māyayā ca śatakratoḥ.
11. brāhmaṇasya abhiśāpena rāmasya ca mahātmanaḥ
kuntyāḥ ca varadānena māyayā ca śatakratoḥ
11. saḥ nihataḥ brāhmaṇasya abhiśāpena ca mahātmanaḥ
rāmasya ca kuntyāḥ varadānena ca śatakratoḥ māyayā ca
11. (He was defeated) by the curse of the Brahmin, by the curse of the great-souled Rama (Paraśurāma), by the boon given by Kunti, and by the illusion (māyā) of Śatakratu (Indra).
भीष्मावमानात्संख्यायां रथानामर्धकीर्तनात् ।
शल्यात्तेजोवधाच्चापि वासुदेवनयेन च ॥१२॥
12. bhīṣmāvamānātsaṁkhyāyāṁ rathānāmardhakīrtanāt ,
śalyāttejovadhāccāpi vāsudevanayena ca.
12. bhīṣmāvamānāt saṃkhyāyām rathānām ardhakīrtanāt
śalyāt tejovadhāt ca api vāsudevanayena ca
12. saḥ nihataḥ bhīṣmāvamānāt saṃkhyāyām rathānām
ardhakīrtanāt śalyāt tejovadhāt ca api vāsudevanayena ca
12. (He was defeated) due to the disrespect shown to Bhishma, due to his being counted as only half a charioteer in the enumeration of warriors, due to the destruction of his valor by Śalya, and also by the strategy of Vāsudeva (Krishna).
रुद्रस्य देवराजस्य यमस्य वरुणस्य च ।
कुबेरद्रोणयोश्चैव कृपस्य च महात्मनः ॥१३॥
13. rudrasya devarājasya yamasya varuṇasya ca ,
kuberadroṇayoścaiva kṛpasya ca mahātmanaḥ.
13. rudrasya devarājasya yamasya varuṇasya ca
kuberadroṇayoḥ ca eva kṛpasya ca mahātmanaḥ
13. rudrasya devarājasya yamasya varuṇasya ca
kuberadroṇayoḥ ca eva kṛpasya ca mahātmanaḥ
13. Of Rudra, of the king of gods (Indra), of Yama, and of Varuna; and indeed, of Kubera and Drona, and of the great-souled (ātman) Kripa.
अस्त्राणि दिव्यान्यादाय युधि गाण्डीवधन्वना ।
हतो वैकर्तनः कर्णो दिवाकरसमद्युतिः ॥१४॥
14. astrāṇi divyānyādāya yudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvanā ,
hato vaikartanaḥ karṇo divākarasamadyutiḥ.
14. astrāṇi divyāni ādāya yudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvanā
hataḥ vaikartanaḥ karṇaḥ divākarasamadyutiḥ
14. gāṇḍīvadhanvanā yudhi divyāni astrāṇi ādāya
vaikartanaḥ divākarasamadyutiḥ karṇaḥ hataḥ
14. Having taken up divine weapons in battle, Karna, the son of Vikartana (Surya), who shone with the splendor of the sun, was killed by the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow.
एवं शप्तस्तव भ्राता बहुभिश्चापि वञ्चितः ।
न शोच्यः स नरव्याघ्रो युद्धे हि निधनं गतः ॥१५॥
15. evaṁ śaptastava bhrātā bahubhiścāpi vañcitaḥ ,
na śocyaḥ sa naravyāghro yuddhe hi nidhanaṁ gataḥ.
15. evam śaptaḥ tava bhrātā bahubhiḥ ca api vañcitaḥ na
śocyaḥ saḥ naravyāghraḥ yuddhe hi nidhanam gataḥ
15. evam tava bhrātā śaptaḥ bahubhiḥ ca api vañcitaḥ
saḥ naravyāghraḥ na śocyaḥ hi yuddhe nidhanam gataḥ
15. Your brother was thus cursed and also deceived by many. That tiger among men should not be grieved for, as he indeed met his end in battle.
