ततस्ते तापसाः सर्वे कार्यवन्तोऽभवंस्तदा ।
तां कन्यां चिन्तयन्तो वै किं कार्यमिति धर्मिणः ॥१॥
1. bhīṣma uvāca ,
tataste tāpasāḥ sarve kāryavanto'bhavaṁstadā ,
tāṁ kanyāṁ cintayanto vai kiṁ kāryamiti dharmiṇaḥ.

1. Bhishma said: Then all those righteous (dharma) ascetics became concerned, pondering what should be done about that girl.
केचिदाहुः पितुर्वेश्म नीयतामिति तापसाः ।
केचिदस्मदुपालम्भे मतिं चक्रुर्द्विजोत्तमाः ॥२॥
2. kecidāhuḥ piturveśma nīyatāmiti tāpasāḥ ,
kecidasmadupālambhe matiṁ cakrurdvijottamāḥ.
2. kecit āhuḥ pituḥ veśma nīyatām iti tāpasāḥ |
kecit asmat upālambhe matim cakruḥ dvija uttamāḥ

2. Some ascetics said, "Let her be taken to her father's house." Others, the most excellent among the twice-born (dvija), focused their minds on reproaching us.
केचिच्छाल्वपतिं गत्वा नियोज्यमिति मेनिरे ।
नेति केचिद्व्यवस्यन्ति प्रत्याख्याता हि तेन सा ॥३॥
3. kecicchālvapatiṁ gatvā niyojyamiti menire ,
neti kecidvyavasyanti pratyākhyātā hi tena sā.
3. kecit śālva patim gatvā niyojyam iti menire | na
iti kecit vyavasyanti pratyākhyātā hi tena sā
3. kecit śālva patim gatvā niyojyam iti menire hi

3. Some considered: "One should go to the king of Śālva and entrust her to him." But others decided against this, for she had already been rejected by him.
एवं गते किं नु शक्यं भद्रे कर्तुं मनीषिभिः ।
पुनरूचुश्च ते सर्वे तापसाः संशितव्रताः ॥४॥
4. evaṁ gate kiṁ nu śakyaṁ bhadre kartuṁ manīṣibhiḥ ,
punarūcuśca te sarve tāpasāḥ saṁśitavratāḥ.
4. evam gate kim nu śakyam bhadre kartum manīṣibhiḥ
| punaḥ ūcuḥ ca te sarve tāpasāḥ saṃśitavratāḥ
4. bhadre,
evam gate,
manīṣibhiḥ kim nu kartum śakyam? ca punaḥ te sarve saṃśitavratāḥ tāpasāḥ ūcuḥ
4. When matters have reached this point, dear girl (bhadre), what can the wise ones possibly do?" And again, all those ascetics, who were firm in their vows, spoke.
अलं प्रव्रजितेनेह भद्रे शृणु हितं वचः ।
इतो गच्छस्व भद्रं ते पितुरेव निवेशनम् ॥५॥
5. alaṁ pravrajiteneha bhadre śṛṇu hitaṁ vacaḥ ,
ito gacchasva bhadraṁ te pitureva niveśanam.
5. alam pravrajitena iha bhadre śṛṇu hitam vacaḥ
itaḥ gacchasva bhadram te pituḥ eva niveśanam
5. bhadre iha pravrajitena alam hitam vacaḥ śṛṇu
itaḥ pituḥ eva niveśanam gacchasva te bhadram
5. O gentle lady, enough with this life of a renunciant (pravrajyā) here. Listen to this beneficial advice: Go from here to your father's own home; may good fortune be with you.
प्रतिपत्स्यति राजा स पिता ते यदनन्तरम् ।
तत्र वत्स्यसि कल्याणि सुखं सर्वगुणान्विता ।
न च तेऽन्या गतिर्न्याय्या भवेद्भद्रे यथा पिता ॥६॥
6. pratipatsyati rājā sa pitā te yadanantaram ,
tatra vatsyasi kalyāṇi sukhaṁ sarvaguṇānvitā ,
na ca te'nyā gatirnyāyyā bhavedbhadre yathā pitā.
6. pratipatsyati rājā sa pitā te yat
anantaram tatra vatsyasi kalyāṇi sukham
sarvaguṇānvitā na ca te anyā
gatiḥ nyāyyā bhavet bhadre yathā pitā
6. sa rājā te pitā yat anantaram
pratipatsyati tatra kalyāṇi sarvaguṇānvitā
sukham vatsyasi ca bhadre te pitā
yathā anyā gatiḥ nyāyyā na bhavet
6. Your father, that king, will manage what comes next. There, O auspicious lady, endowed with all virtues, you will live happily. For you, O gentle lady, no other path (gati) would be as fitting or proper as that of your father.
पतिर्वापि गतिर्नार्याः पिता वा वरवर्णिनि ।
गतिः पतिः समस्थाया विषमे तु पिता गतिः ॥७॥
7. patirvāpi gatirnāryāḥ pitā vā varavarṇini ,
gatiḥ patiḥ samasthāyā viṣame tu pitā gatiḥ.
7. patiḥ vā api gatiḥ nāryāḥ pitā vā varavarṇini
gatiḥ patiḥ samasthāyāḥ viṣame tu pitā gatiḥ
7. varavarṇini nāryāḥ patiḥ vā api pitā vā gatiḥ
samasthāyāḥ patiḥ gatiḥ tu viṣame pitā gatiḥ
7. O lady of excellent complexion (varavarṇinī), for a woman (nārī), her husband (pati) or her father is her refuge (gati). The husband is the refuge for one in a normal situation, but in a difficult one, the father is the refuge.
प्रव्रज्या हि सुदुःखेयं सुकुमार्या विशेषतः ।
राजपुत्र्याः प्रकृत्या च कुमार्यास्तव भामिनि ॥८॥
8. pravrajyā hi suduḥkheyaṁ sukumāryā viśeṣataḥ ,
rājaputryāḥ prakṛtyā ca kumāryāstava bhāmini.
8. pravrajyā hi suduḥkhā iyam sukumāryā viśeṣataḥ
rājaputryāḥ prakṛtyā ca kumāryāḥ tava bhāmini
8. bhāmini iyam pravrajyā hi suduḥkhā viśeṣataḥ
sukumāryā ca prakṛtyā tava rājaputryāḥ kumāryāḥ
8. Indeed, this renunciation (pravrajyā) is exceedingly difficult, especially for a delicate person. And for you, O passionate lady (bhāminī), by your intrinsic nature (prakṛti) as a princess and a maiden, it is particularly so.
भद्रे दोषा हि विद्यन्ते बहवो वरवर्णिनि ।
आश्रमे वै वसन्त्यास्ते न भवेयुः पितुर्गृहे ॥९॥
9. bhadre doṣā hi vidyante bahavo varavarṇini ,
āśrame vai vasantyāste na bhaveyuḥ piturgṛhe.
9. bhadre doṣāḥ hi vidyante bahavaḥ varavarṇini
āśrame vai vasantyāḥ te na bhaveyuḥ pituḥ gṛhe
9. bhadre varavarṇini,
āśrame vasantyāḥ te hi bahavaḥ doṣāḥ vidyante; (te doṣāḥ) pituḥ gṛhe na bhaveyuḥ.
9. O gentle lady, O beautiful one, many drawbacks indeed exist for you while dwelling in this hermitage. Such difficulties would not be present in your father's house.
ततस्तु तेऽब्रुवन्वाक्यं ब्राह्मणास्तां तपस्विनीम् ।
त्वामिहैकाकिनीं दृष्ट्वा निर्जने गहने वने ।
प्रार्थयिष्यन्ति राजेन्द्रास्तस्मान्मैवं मनः कृथाः ॥१०॥
10. tatastu te'bruvanvākyaṁ brāhmaṇāstāṁ tapasvinīm ,
tvāmihaikākinīṁ dṛṣṭvā nirjane gahane vane ,
prārthayiṣyanti rājendrāstasmānmaivaṁ manaḥ kṛthāḥ.
10. tataḥ tu te abruvan vākyam brāhmaṇāḥ
tām tapasvinīm tvām iha ekākinīm dṛṣṭvā
nirjane gahane vane prārthayiṣyanti
rājendrāḥ tasmāt mā evam manaḥ kṛthāḥ
10. tataḥ tu te brāhmaṇāḥ tām tapasvinīm vākyam abruvan: iha nirjane gahane vane tvām ekākinīm dṛṣṭvā rājendrāḥ prārthayiṣyanti.
tasmāt manaḥ evam mā kṛthāḥ.
10. Then the brahmins said to that female ascetic: 'Seeing you alone here in this desolate, dense forest, powerful kings will seek you (in marriage). Therefore, do not set your heart on such a life.'
अम्बोवाच ।
न शक्यं काशिनगरीं पुनर्गन्तुं पितुर्गृहान् ।
अवज्ञाता भविष्यामि बान्धवानां न संशयः ॥११॥
11. ambovāca ,
na śakyaṁ kāśinagarīṁ punargantuṁ piturgṛhān ,
avajñātā bhaviṣyāmi bāndhavānāṁ na saṁśayaḥ.
11. ambā uvāca na śakyam kāśīnagarīm punaḥ gantum pituḥ
gṛhān avajñātā bhaviṣyāmi bāndhavānām na saṃśayaḥ
11. ambā uvāca: pituḥ gṛhān kāśīnagarīm punaḥ gantum na śakyam (asti).
bāndhavānām (dvārā) avajñātā bhaviṣyāmi,
(atra) na saṃśayaḥ.
11. Amba said: 'It is not possible for me to return to the city of Kashi, to my father's home. I will certainly be disgraced by my relatives, there is no doubt about it.'
उषिता ह्यन्यथा बाल्ये पितुर्वेश्मनि तापसाः ।
नाहं गमिष्ये भद्रं वस्तत्र यत्र पिता मम ।
तपस्तप्तुमभीप्सामि तापसैः परिपालिता ॥१२॥
12. uṣitā hyanyathā bālye piturveśmani tāpasāḥ ,
nāhaṁ gamiṣye bhadraṁ vastatra yatra pitā mama ,
tapastaptumabhīpsāmi tāpasaiḥ paripālitā.
12. uṣitā hi anyathā bālye pituḥ veśmani
tāpasāḥ na aham gamiṣye bhadram
vaḥ tatra yatra pitā mama tapaḥ
taptum abhīpsāmi tāpasaiḥ paripālitā
12. (ahaṃ hi) bālye pituḥ veśmani anyathā uṣitā.
tāpasāḥ,
yatra mama pitā (asti) tatra ahaṃ na gamiṣye.
vaḥ bhadram (astu)! tāpasaiḥ paripālitā (sati) tapaḥ taptum abhīpsāmi.
12. Amba (continues): 'For I have indeed spent my childhood differently in my father's house. O ascetics, I will not go there, where my father resides. May all be well with you! I desire to undertake (tapas) austerities, protected by other ascetics.'
यथा परेऽपि मे लोके न स्यादेवं महात्ययः ।
दौर्भाग्यं ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठास्तस्मात्तप्स्याम्यहं तपः ॥१३॥
13. yathā pare'pi me loke na syādevaṁ mahātyayaḥ ,
daurbhāgyaṁ brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhāstasmāttapsyāmyahaṁ tapaḥ.
13. yathā pare api me loke na syāt evam mahātyayaḥ
daurbhāgyaṃ brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhāḥ tasmāt tapsyāmi aham tapaḥ
13. brāhmaṇaśreṣṭhāḥ me loke pare api evam mahātyayaḥ
daurbhāgyaṃ na syāt yathā tasmāt aham tapaḥ tapsyāmi
13. O best among brahmins, so that such a great calamity and misfortune may not befall me even in the next world, therefore I shall perform austerity (tapas).
भीष्म उवाच ।
इत्येवं तेषु विप्रेषु चिन्तयत्सु तथा तथा ।
राजर्षिस्तद्वनं प्राप्तस्तपस्वी होत्रवाहनः ॥१४॥
14. bhīṣma uvāca ,
ityevaṁ teṣu vipreṣu cintayatsu tathā tathā ,
rājarṣistadvanaṁ prāptastapasvī hotravāhanaḥ.
14. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca iti evam teṣu vipreṣu cintayatsu tathā
tathā rājarṣiḥ tat vanaṃ prāptaḥ tapasvī hotravāhanaḥ
14. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca iti evam teṣu vipreṣu tathā tathā cintayatsu
rājarṣiḥ tapasvī hotravāhanaḥ tat vanaṃ prāptaḥ
14. Bhishma said: While those brahmins were pondering in various ways, the royal sage (rājarṣi) Hotravahana, an ascetic (tapasvī), arrived at that forest.
ततस्ते तापसाः सर्वे पूजयन्ति स्म तं नृपम् ।
पूजाभिः स्वागताद्याभिरासनेनोदकेन च ॥१५॥
15. tataste tāpasāḥ sarve pūjayanti sma taṁ nṛpam ,
pūjābhiḥ svāgatādyābhirāsanenodakena ca.
15. tataḥ te tāpasāḥ sarve pūjayanti sma tam nṛpam
pūjābhiḥ svāgatādyābhiḥ āsanena udakena ca
15. tataḥ te sarve tāpasāḥ tam nṛpam svāgatādyābhiḥ
pūjābhiḥ āsanena udakena ca pūjayanti sma
15. Then, all those ascetics honored that king with various forms of worship (pūjā), beginning with a welcome (svāgata), and with a seat and water.
तस्योपविष्टस्य ततो विश्रान्तस्योपशृण्वतः ।
पुनरेव कथां चक्रुः कन्यां प्रति वनौकसः ॥१६॥
16. tasyopaviṣṭasya tato viśrāntasyopaśṛṇvataḥ ,
punareva kathāṁ cakruḥ kanyāṁ prati vanaukasaḥ.
16. tasya upaviṣṭasya tataḥ viśrāntasya upaśṛṇvataḥ
punaḥ eva kathām cakruḥ kanyām prati vanaukasaḥ
16. tataḥ tasya upaviṣṭasya viśrāntasya upaśṛṇvataḥ
vanaukasaḥ kanyām prati punaḥ eva kathām cakruḥ
16. Then, as he sat down, rested, and listened, the forest dwellers (vanaukasaḥ) again recounted the story concerning the maiden.
अम्बायास्तां कथां श्रुत्वा काशिराज्ञश्च भारत ।
स वेपमान उत्थाय मातुरस्याः पिता तदा ।
तां कन्यामङ्कमारोप्य पर्याश्वासयत प्रभो ॥१७॥
17. ambāyāstāṁ kathāṁ śrutvā kāśirājñaśca bhārata ,
sa vepamāna utthāya māturasyāḥ pitā tadā ,
tāṁ kanyāmaṅkamāropya paryāśvāsayata prabho.
17. ambāyāḥ tām kathām śrutvā kāśirājñaḥ
ca bhārata saḥ vepamānaḥ utthāya
mātuḥ asyāḥ pitā tadā tām kanyām
aṅkam āropya paryāśvāsayata prabho
17. bhārata prabho asyāḥ mātuḥ pitā
kāśirājñaḥ ca ambāyāḥ tām kathām śrutvā
tadā saḥ vepamānaḥ utthāya tām
kanyām aṅkam āropya paryāśvāsayata
17. O Bhārata, after hearing that story of Ambā concerning the king of Kāśi, her mother's father, trembling, then rose. O Lord, he placed his daughter on his lap and consoled her.
स तामपृच्छत्कार्त्स्न्येन व्यसनोत्पत्तिमादितः ।
सा च तस्मै यथावृत्तं विस्तरेण न्यवेदयत् ॥१८॥
18. sa tāmapṛcchatkārtsnyena vyasanotpattimāditaḥ ,
sā ca tasmai yathāvṛttaṁ vistareṇa nyavedayat.
18. saḥ tām apṛcchat kārtsnyena vyasanotpattim āditaḥ
sā ca tasmai yathāvṛttam vistareṇa nyavedayat
18. saḥ tām āditaḥ kārtsnyena vyasanotpattim apṛcchat
ca sā tasmai yathāvṛttam vistareṇa nyavedayat
18. He questioned her thoroughly, asking about the origin of her misfortune from the very beginning. And she, in turn, narrated to him in detail exactly what had happened.
ततः स राजर्षिरभूद्दुःखशोकसमन्वितः ।
कार्यं च प्रतिपेदे तन्मनसा सुमहातपाः ॥१९॥
19. tataḥ sa rājarṣirabhūdduḥkhaśokasamanvitaḥ ,
kāryaṁ ca pratipede tanmanasā sumahātapāḥ.
19. tataḥ saḥ rājarṣiḥ abhūt duḥkhaśokasammanvitaḥ
kāryam ca pratipede tat manasā sumahātapāḥ
19. tataḥ saḥ rājarṣiḥ duḥkhaśokasammanvitaḥ abhūt
ca sumahātapāḥ tat kāryam manasā pratipede
19. Then that royal sage became filled with sorrow and grief. And that ascetic of great austerity (tapas) took up that task with his mind.
अब्रवीद्वेपमानश्च कन्यामार्तां सुदुःखितः ।
मा गाः पितृगृहं भद्रे मातुस्ते जनको ह्यहम् ॥२०॥
20. abravīdvepamānaśca kanyāmārtāṁ suduḥkhitaḥ ,
mā gāḥ pitṛgṛhaṁ bhadre mātuste janako hyaham.
20. abravīt vepamānaḥ ca kanyām ārtām suduḥkhitaḥ mā
gāḥ pitṛgṛham bhadre mātuḥ te janakaḥ hi aham
20. ca vepamānaḥ suduḥkhitaḥ (saḥ) ārtām kanyām abravīt: "bhadre,
pitṛgṛham mā gāḥ hi aham te mātuḥ janakaḥ"
20. And, trembling and deeply grieved, he spoke to his distressed daughter (Ambā): 'O gentle one, do not go to your father's house; for I am indeed your mother's father.'
दुःखं छेत्स्यामि तेऽहं वै मयि वर्तस्व पुत्रिके ।
पर्याप्तं ते मनः पुत्रि यदेवं परिशुष्यसि ॥२१॥
21. duḥkhaṁ chetsyāmi te'haṁ vai mayi vartasva putrike ,
paryāptaṁ te manaḥ putri yadevaṁ pariśuṣyasi.
21. duḥkham chetsyāmi te aham vai mayi vartasva putrike
paryāptam te manaḥ putri yat evam pariśuṣyasi
21. putrike aham vai te duḥkham chetsyāmi.
putri te manaḥ yat evam pariśuṣyasi,
tat paryāptam.
mayi vartasva.
21. O dear daughter, I will certainly put an end to your sorrow. O daughter, your mind is distressed enough that you are withering away like this. Therefore, turn to me.
गच्छ मद्वचनाद्रामं जामदग्न्यं तपस्विनम् ।
रामस्तव महद्दुःखं शोकं चापनयिष्यति ।
हनिष्यति रणे भीष्मं न करिष्यति चेद्वचः ॥२२॥
22. gaccha madvacanādrāmaṁ jāmadagnyaṁ tapasvinam ,
rāmastava mahadduḥkhaṁ śokaṁ cāpanayiṣyati ,
haniṣyati raṇe bhīṣmaṁ na kariṣyati cedvacaḥ.
22. gaccha mat vacanāt rāmam jāmadagnyam
tapasvinam rāmaḥ tava mahat duḥkham
śokam ca apanayisyati haniṣyati
raṇe bhīṣmam na kariṣyati cet vacaḥ
22. tvam mat vacanāt jāmadagnyam tapasvinam rāmam gaccha.
rāmaḥ tava mahat duḥkham śokam ca apanayiṣyati.
cet saḥ vacaḥ na kariṣyati tadā saḥ raṇe bhīṣmam haniṣyati.
22. Go, according to my word, to Rāma (Paraśurāma), the ascetic, the son of Jamadagni. Rāma will remove your great sorrow and grief. If (Bhīṣma) does not comply with (Rāma's) command, then (Rāma) will kill Bhīṣma in battle.
तं गच्छ भार्गवश्रेष्ठं कालाग्निसमतेजसम् ।
प्रतिष्ठापयिता स त्वां समे पथि महातपाः ॥२३॥
23. taṁ gaccha bhārgavaśreṣṭhaṁ kālāgnisamatejasam ,
pratiṣṭhāpayitā sa tvāṁ same pathi mahātapāḥ.
23. tam gaccha bhārgavaśreṣṭham kālāgnisamatejasam
pratiṣṭhāpayitā saḥ tvām same pathi mahātapāḥ
23. tvam tam bhārgavaśreṣṭham kālāgnisamatejasam gaccha.
saḥ mahātapāḥ tvām same pathi pratiṣṭhāpayitā.
23. Go to him, the foremost of the Bhārgavas (Paraśurāma), whose splendor is like the destructive fire of time. That great ascetic (tapasvin) will establish you on the right path.
ततस्तु सस्वरं बाष्पमुत्सृजन्ती पुनः पुनः ।
अब्रवीत्पितरं मातुः सा तदा होत्रवाहनम् ॥२४॥
24. tatastu sasvaraṁ bāṣpamutsṛjantī punaḥ punaḥ ,
abravītpitaraṁ mātuḥ sā tadā hotravāhanam.
24. tataḥ tu sasvaram bāṣpam utsṛjantī punaḥ punaḥ
abravīt pitaram mātuḥ sā tadā hotravāhanam
24. tataḥ tu sā tadā punaḥ punaḥ sasvaram bāṣpam utsṛjantī mātuḥ pitaram hotravāhanam abravīt.
24. Then, she, repeatedly shedding noisy tears, addressed her maternal grandfather, Hotravāhana.
अभिवादयित्वा शिरसा गमिष्ये तव शासनात् ।
अपि नामाद्य पश्येयमार्यं तं लोकविश्रुतम् ॥२५॥
25. abhivādayitvā śirasā gamiṣye tava śāsanāt ,
api nāmādya paśyeyamāryaṁ taṁ lokaviśrutam.
25. abhivādayitvā śirasā gamiṣye tava śāsanāt
api nāma adya paśyeyam āryam tam lokaviśrutam
25. śirasā abhivādayitvā tava śāsanāt gamiṣye
api nāma adya lokaviśrutam tam āryam paśyeyam
25. After bowing my head in salutation, I will depart at your command. Oh, if only I could see that noble, world-renowned person today!
कथं च तीव्रं दुःखं मे हनिष्यति स भार्गवः ।
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुमथ यास्यामि तत्र वै ॥२६॥
26. kathaṁ ca tīvraṁ duḥkhaṁ me haniṣyati sa bhārgavaḥ ,
etadicchāmyahaṁ śrotumatha yāsyāmi tatra vai.
26. katham ca tīvram duḥkham me haniṣyati saḥ bhārgavaḥ
etat icchāmi aham śrotum atha yāsyāmi tatra vai
26. ca saḥ bhārgavaḥ me tīvram duḥkham katham haniṣyati
aham etat śrotum icchāmi atha vai tatra yāsyāmi
26. And how will that descendant of Bhṛgu (Bhārgava) alleviate my intense suffering? I wish to hear this, and only then will I go there.
