वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तत्र तेषु शयानेषु हिडिम्बो नाम राक्षसः ।
अविदूरे वनात्तस्माच्छालवृक्षमुपाश्रितः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tatra teṣu śayāneṣu hiḍimbo nāma rākṣasaḥ ,
avidūre vanāttasmācchālavṛkṣamupāśritaḥ.

rākṣasaḥ avidūre vanāt tasmāt śālavṛkṣam upāśritaḥ
1. Vaiśampāyana said: There, while they were sleeping, a demon (rākṣasa) named Hiḍimba was resting on a śāla tree not far from that forest.
क्रूरो मानुषमांसादो महावीर्यो महाबलः ।
विरूपरूपः पिङ्गाक्षः करालो घोरदर्शनः ।
पिशितेप्सुः क्षुधार्तस्तानपश्यत यदृच्छया ॥२॥
2. krūro mānuṣamāṁsādo mahāvīryo mahābalaḥ ,
virūparūpaḥ piṅgākṣaḥ karālo ghoradarśanaḥ ,
piśitepsuḥ kṣudhārtastānapaśyata yadṛcchayā.
2. krūraḥ mānuṣamāṃsādaḥ mahāvīryaḥ
mahābalaḥ virūparūpaḥ piṅgākṣaḥ
karālaḥ ghoradarśanaḥ piśita īpsuḥ
kṣudhā ārtaḥ tān apaśyat yadṛcchayā
2. He was cruel, a cannibal, exceedingly valorous and mighty, of a hideous form, with tawny eyes, terrifying and dreadful to behold. Desiring flesh and tormented by hunger, he saw them by chance.
ऊर्ध्वाङ्गुलिः स कण्डूयन्धुन्वन्रूक्षाञ्शिरोरुहान् ।
जृम्भमाणो महावक्त्रः पुनः पुनरवेक्ष्य च ॥३॥
3. ūrdhvāṅguliḥ sa kaṇḍūyandhunvanrūkṣāñśiroruhān ,
jṛmbhamāṇo mahāvaktraḥ punaḥ punaravekṣya ca.
3. ūrdhva aṅguliḥ saḥ kaṇḍūyan dhunvan rūkṣān śiroruhān
jṛmbhamāṇaḥ mahāvaktrḥ punaḥ punaḥ avekṣya ca
3. With upraised fingers, scratching and shaking his rough hair, he yawned with a wide mouth and looked again and again.
दुष्टो मानुषमांसादो महाकायो महाबलः ।
आघ्राय मानुषं गन्धं भगिनीमिदमब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. duṣṭo mānuṣamāṁsādo mahākāyo mahābalaḥ ,
āghrāya mānuṣaṁ gandhaṁ bhaginīmidamabravīt.
4. duṣṭaḥ mānuṣamāṃsādaḥ mahākāyaḥ mahābalaḥ
āghrāya mānuṣam gandham bhaginīm idam abravīt
4. That wicked cannibal, huge-bodied and mighty, having smelt human odor, said this to his sister.
उपपन्नश्चिरस्याद्य भक्षो मम मनःप्रियः ।
स्नेहस्रवान्प्रस्रवति जिह्वा पर्येति मे मुखम् ॥५॥
5. upapannaścirasyādya bhakṣo mama manaḥpriyaḥ ,
snehasravānprasravati jihvā paryeti me mukham.
5. upapannaḥ cirasya adya bhakṣaḥ mama manaḥpriyaḥ
snehasrāvān prasravati jihvā paryeti me mukham
5. Today, after a long time, a meal dear to my heart has been obtained. My tongue is dripping with juices, and it moves around my mouth.
अष्टौ दंष्ट्राः सुतीक्ष्णाग्राश्चिरस्यापातदुःसहाः ।
देहेषु मज्जयिष्यामि स्निग्धेषु पिशितेषु च ॥६॥
6. aṣṭau daṁṣṭrāḥ sutīkṣṇāgrāścirasyāpātaduḥsahāḥ ,
deheṣu majjayiṣyāmi snigdheṣu piśiteṣu ca.
6. aṣṭau daṃṣṭrāḥ sutīkṣṇāgrāḥ ca cirasya āpātaduḥsahāḥ
deheṣu majjayiṣyāmi snigdheṣu piśiteṣu ca
6. I will plunge my eight very sharp-pointed fangs, which are difficult to endure upon impact for a long time, into their bodies and fatty flesh.
आक्रम्य मानुषं कण्ठमाच्छिद्य धमनीमपि ।
उष्णं नवं प्रपास्यामि फेनिलं रुधिरं बहु ॥७॥
7. ākramya mānuṣaṁ kaṇṭhamācchidya dhamanīmapi ,
uṣṇaṁ navaṁ prapāsyāmi phenilaṁ rudhiraṁ bahu.
7. ākramya mānuṣam kaṇṭham ācchidya dhamanīm api
uṣṇam navam prapāsyāmi phenilam rudhiram bahu
7. Having attacked the human throat and even severed the artery, I will drink much warm, fresh, frothy blood.
गच्छ जानीहि के त्वेते शेरते वनमाश्रिताः ।
मानुषो बलवान्गन्धो घ्राणं तर्पयतीव मे ॥८॥
8. gaccha jānīhi ke tvete śerate vanamāśritāḥ ,
mānuṣo balavāngandho ghrāṇaṁ tarpayatīva me.
8. gaccha jānīhi ke tu ete śerate vanam āśritāḥ
mānuṣaḥ balavān gandhaḥ ghrāṇam tarpayati iva me
8. Go, and ascertain who these are, lying (taking refuge) in the forest. A strong human scent seems to be invigorating my nose.
हत्वैतान्मानुषान्सर्वानानयस्व ममान्तिकम् ।
अस्मद्विषयसुप्तेभ्यो नैतेभ्यो भयमस्ति ते ॥९॥
9. hatvaitānmānuṣānsarvānānayasva mamāntikam ,
asmadviṣayasuptebhyo naitebhyo bhayamasti te.
9. hatvā etān mānuṣān sarvān ānayasva mama antikam
asmadviṣayasuwebhyaḥ na etebhyaḥ bhayam asti te
9. Having killed all these humans, bring them to me. There is no danger for you from these, who are sleeping in our territory.
एषां मांसानि संस्कृत्य मानुषाणां यथेष्टतः ।
भक्षयिष्याव सहितौ कुरु तूर्णं वचो मम ॥१०॥
10. eṣāṁ māṁsāni saṁskṛtya mānuṣāṇāṁ yatheṣṭataḥ ,
bhakṣayiṣyāva sahitau kuru tūrṇaṁ vaco mama.
10. eṣām māṃsāni saṃskṛtya mānuṣāṇām yatheṣṭataḥ
bhakṣayiṣyāva sahitau kuru tūrṇam vacaḥ mama
10. Having prepared the flesh of these humans according to our desire, we two shall eat it together. Do my command quickly!
भ्रातुर्वचनमाज्ञाय त्वरमाणेव राक्षसी ।
जगाम तत्र यत्र स्म पाण्डवा भरतर्षभ ॥११॥
11. bhrāturvacanamājñāya tvaramāṇeva rākṣasī ,
jagāma tatra yatra sma pāṇḍavā bharatarṣabha.
11. bhrātuḥ vacanam ājñāya tvaramāṇā iva rākṣasī
jagāma tatra yatra sma pāṇḍavāḥ bharatarṣabha
11. O best of the Bhāratas, the demoness, understanding her brother's command, went as if in a hurry to where the Pāṇḍavas were.
ददर्श तत्र गत्वा सा पाण्डवान्पृथया सह ।
शयानान्भीमसेनं च जाग्रतं त्वपराजितम् ॥१२॥
12. dadarśa tatra gatvā sā pāṇḍavānpṛthayā saha ,
śayānānbhīmasenaṁ ca jāgrataṁ tvaparājitam.
12. dadarśa tatra gatvā sā pāṇḍavān pṛthayā saha
śayānān bhīmasenam ca jāgratam tu aparājitam
12. Having gone there, she saw the Pāṇḍavas sleeping with Pṛthā, but Bhīmasena was awake and unconquered.
दृष्ट्वैव भीमसेनं सा शालस्कन्धमिवोद्गतम् ।
राक्षसी कामयामास रूपेणाप्रतिमं भुवि ॥१३॥
13. dṛṣṭvaiva bhīmasenaṁ sā śālaskandhamivodgatam ,
rākṣasī kāmayāmāsa rūpeṇāpratimaṁ bhuvi.
13. dṛṣṭvā eva bhīmasenam sā śālaskandham iva
udgatam rākṣasī kāmayāmāsa rūpeṇa apratimam bhuvi
13. The demoness, seeing Bhīmasena, who stood tall like the trunk of a śāla tree, immediately desired him, as he was unequalled in beauty on earth.
अयं श्यामो महाबाहुः सिंहस्कन्धो महाद्युतिः ।
कम्बुग्रीवः पुष्कराक्षो भर्ता युक्तो भवेन्मम ॥१४॥
14. ayaṁ śyāmo mahābāhuḥ siṁhaskandho mahādyutiḥ ,
kambugrīvaḥ puṣkarākṣo bhartā yukto bhavenmama.
14. ayam śyāmaḥ mahābāhuḥ siṃhaskandhaḥ mahādyutiḥ
kambugrīvaḥ puṣkarākṣaḥ bhartā yuktaḥ bhavet mama
14. This dark-complexioned, mighty-armed man with shoulders like a lion and great splendor, possessing a conch-like neck and lotus-like eyes, would be a suitable husband for me.
नाहं भ्रातृवचो जातु कुर्यां क्रूरोपसंहितम् ।
पतिस्नेहोऽतिबलवान्न तथा भ्रातृसौहृदम् ॥१५॥
15. nāhaṁ bhrātṛvaco jātu kuryāṁ krūropasaṁhitam ,
patisneho'tibalavānna tathā bhrātṛsauhṛdam.
15. na aham bhrātṛvacaḥ jātu kuryām krūra upasaṃhitam
patisnehaḥ atibalavān na tathā bhrātṛsauhṛdam
15. I would never carry out a cruel command (vacaḥ) from my brother. Love for a husband is exceedingly strong; brotherly affection is not comparable.
मुहूर्तमिव तृप्तिश्च भवेद्भ्रातुर्ममैव च ।
हतैरेतैरहत्वा तु मोदिष्ये शाश्वतीः समाः ॥१६॥
16. muhūrtamiva tṛptiśca bhavedbhrāturmamaiva ca ,
hatairetairahatvā tu modiṣye śāśvatīḥ samāḥ.
16. muhūrtam iva tṛptiḥ ca bhavet bhrātuḥ mama eva
ca hataiḥ etaiḥ ahatvā tu modiṣye śāśvatīḥ samāḥ
16. Even for a moment, there would be satisfaction for my brother and me if these were slain. But if I do not kill these (people), I shall indeed rejoice for eternal years.
सा कामरूपिणी रूपं कृत्वा मानुषमुत्तमम् ।
उपतस्थे महाबाहुं भीमसेनं शनैः शनैः ॥१७॥
17. sā kāmarūpiṇī rūpaṁ kṛtvā mānuṣamuttamam ,
upatasthe mahābāhuṁ bhīmasenaṁ śanaiḥ śanaiḥ.
17. sā kāmarūpiṇī rūpam kṛtvā mānuṣam uttamam
upatasthe mahābāhum bhīmasenam śanaiḥ śanaiḥ
17. She, who could change her form at will (kāmarūpiṇī), assumed a most excellent human form and slowly approached the mighty-armed Bhimasena.
विलज्जमानेव लता दिव्याभरणभूषिता ।
स्मितपूर्वमिदं वाक्यं भीमसेनमथाब्रवीत् ॥१८॥
18. vilajjamāneva latā divyābharaṇabhūṣitā ,
smitapūrvamidaṁ vākyaṁ bhīmasenamathābravīt.
18. vilajjamānā iva latā divyābharaṇabhūṣitā
smitapūrvam idam vākyam bhīmasenam atha abravīt
18. Adorned with divine ornaments, she, like a bashful creeper, then spoke these words to Bhimasena with a preliminary smile.
कुतस्त्वमसि संप्राप्तः कश्चासि पुरुषर्षभ ।
क इमे शेरते चेह पुरुषा देवरूपिणः ॥१९॥
19. kutastvamasi saṁprāptaḥ kaścāsi puruṣarṣabha ,
ka ime śerate ceha puruṣā devarūpiṇaḥ.
19. kutaḥ tvam asi samprāptaḥ ca asi puruṣarṣabha
kaḥ ime śerate ca iha puruṣāḥ devarūpiṇaḥ
19. From where have you arrived, and who are you, O best among men? And who are these god-like men lying here?
केयं च बृहती श्यामा सुकुमारी तवानघ ।
शेते वनमिदं प्राप्य विश्वस्ता स्वगृहे यथा ॥२०॥
20. keyaṁ ca bṛhatī śyāmā sukumārī tavānagha ,
śete vanamidaṁ prāpya viśvastā svagṛhe yathā.
20. kā iyam ca bṛhatī śyāmā sukumārī tava anagha
śete vanam idam prāpya viśvastā svagṛhe yathā
20. And who is this tall, dark-skinned, very delicate woman, O sinless one, who lies here in this forest, having arrived, as confidently as if in her own home?
नेदं जानाति गहनं वनं राक्षससेवितम् ।
वसति ह्यत्र पापात्मा हिडिम्बो नाम राक्षसः ॥२१॥
21. nedaṁ jānāti gahanaṁ vanaṁ rākṣasasevitam ,
vasati hyatra pāpātmā hiḍimbo nāma rākṣasaḥ.
21. na idam jānāti gahanam vanam rākṣasa-sevitam
vasati hi atra pāpa-ātmā hiḍimbaḥ nāma rākṣasaḥ
21. You are not familiar with this deep forest, which is frequented by demons (rākṣasa). Indeed, a wicked-souled demon (rākṣasa) named Hiḍimba lives here.
तेनाहं प्रेषिता भ्रात्रा दुष्टभावेन रक्षसा ।
बिभक्षयिषता मांसं युष्माकममरोपम ॥२२॥
22. tenāhaṁ preṣitā bhrātrā duṣṭabhāvena rakṣasā ,
bibhakṣayiṣatā māṁsaṁ yuṣmākamamaropama.
22. tena aham preṣitā bhrātrā duṣṭa-bhāvena rakṣasā
bibhakṣay-iṣatā māṃsam yuṣmākam amara-upama
22. I was sent by that wicked-minded demon (rākṣasa), my brother, who desires to devour your flesh, O one comparable to an immortal (amara).
साहं त्वामभिसंप्रेक्ष्य देवगर्भसमप्रभम् ।
नान्यं भर्तारमिच्छामि सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥२३॥
23. sāhaṁ tvāmabhisaṁprekṣya devagarbhasamaprabham ,
nānyaṁ bhartāramicchāmi satyametadbravīmi te.
23. sā aham tvām abhi-samprekṣya deva-garbha-sama-prabham
na anyam bhartāram icchāmi satyam etat bravīmi te
23. Having seen you, shining with a splendor equal to that of a divine being (deva), I desire no other husband. I tell you this truth.
एतद्विज्ञाय धर्मज्ञ युक्तं मयि समाचर ।
कामोपहतचित्ताङ्गीं भजमानां भजस्व माम् ॥२४॥
24. etadvijñāya dharmajña yuktaṁ mayi samācara ,
kāmopahatacittāṅgīṁ bhajamānāṁ bhajasva mām.
24. etat vijñāya dharma-jña yuktam mayi samācara
kāma-upahata-citta-aṅgīm bhaja-mānām bhajasva mām
24. Having understood this, O knower of righteousness (dharma), behave appropriately towards me. Accept me, whose mind and body are overwhelmed by desire (kāma), and who is devoted to you.
त्रास्येऽहं त्वां महाबाहो राक्षसात्पुरुषादकात् ।
वत्स्यावो गिरिदुर्गेषु भर्ता भव ममानघ ॥२५॥
25. trāsye'haṁ tvāṁ mahābāho rākṣasātpuruṣādakāt ,
vatsyāvo giridurgeṣu bhartā bhava mamānagha.
25. trāsye aham tvām mahā-bāho rākṣasāt puruṣa-adakāt
vatsyāvaḥ giri-durgeṣu bhartā bhava mama anagha
25. O mighty-armed one, I shall save you from that man-eating demon (rākṣasa). We two shall live in mountain fortresses. Be my husband, O sinless one.
अन्तरिक्षचरा ह्यस्मि कामतो विचरामि च ।
अतुलामाप्नुहि प्रीतिं तत्र तत्र मया सह ॥२६॥
26. antarikṣacarā hyasmi kāmato vicarāmi ca ,
atulāmāpnuhi prītiṁ tatra tatra mayā saha.
26. antarikṣacarā hi asmi kāmataḥ vicarāmi ca
atulām āpnuhi prītim tatra tatra mayā saha
26. Indeed, I am a sky-dweller, moving about at will. Therefore, attain incomparable joy with me, wherever we may go.
भीम उवाच ।
मातरं भ्रातरं ज्येष्ठं कनिष्ठानपरानिमान् ।
परित्यजेत को न्वद्य प्रभवन्निव राक्षसि ॥२७॥
27. bhīma uvāca ,
mātaraṁ bhrātaraṁ jyeṣṭhaṁ kaniṣṭhānaparānimān ,
parityajeta ko nvadya prabhavanniva rākṣasi.
27. bhīmaḥ uvāca mātaram bhrātaram jyeṣṭham kaniṣṭhān aparān
imān parityajeta kaḥ nu adya prabhavan iva rākṣasi
27. Bhīma said: 'O demoness (rākṣasī), who indeed, now, would abandon his mother, his elder brother, and these other younger ones, acting as if he were a completely independent lord (prabhavann iva)?'
को हि सुप्तानिमान्भ्रातॄन्दत्त्वा राक्षसभोजनम् ।
मातरं च नरो गच्छेत्कामार्त इव मद्विधः ॥२८॥
28. ko hi suptānimānbhrātṝndattvā rākṣasabhojanam ,
mātaraṁ ca naro gacchetkāmārta iva madvidhaḥ.
28. kaḥ hi suptān imān bhrātṝn dattvā rākṣasabhojanam
mātaram ca naraḥ gacchet kāmārtaḥ iva madvidhaḥ
28. Indeed, what man like me, afflicted by desire (kāma), would abandon these sleeping brothers and his mother, having offered them as food for demons?
राक्षस्युवाच ।
यत्ते प्रियं तत्करिष्ये सर्वानेतान्प्रबोधय ।
मोक्षयिष्यामि वः कामं राक्षसात्पुरुषादकात् ॥२९॥
29. rākṣasyuvāca ,
yatte priyaṁ tatkariṣye sarvānetānprabodhaya ,
mokṣayiṣyāmi vaḥ kāmaṁ rākṣasātpuruṣādakāt.
29. rākṣasī uvāca yat te priyam tat kariṣye sarvān etān
prabodhaya mokṣayiṣyāmi vaḥ kāmam rākṣasāt puruṣādakāt
29. The demoness (rākṣasī) said: 'Whatever is dear to you, that I will do. Awaken all of them. I will deliver you from the demon Puruṣāda, as you wish.'
भीम उवाच ।
सुखसुप्तान्वने भ्रातॄन्मातरं चैव राक्षसि ।
न भयाद्बोधयिष्यामि भ्रातुस्तव दुरात्मनः ॥३०॥
30. bhīma uvāca ,
sukhasuptānvane bhrātṝnmātaraṁ caiva rākṣasi ,
na bhayādbodhayiṣyāmi bhrātustava durātmanaḥ.
30. bhīmaḥ uvāca sukhasuptān vane bhrātṝn mātaram ca eva
rākṣasi na bhayāt bodhayiṣyāmi bhrātuḥ tava durātmanaḥ
30. Bhīma said: 'O demoness (rākṣasī), I will not awaken my brothers and mother, who are sleeping peacefully in the forest, out of fear of your evil-minded (durātman) brother.'
न हि मे राक्षसा भीरु सोढुं शक्ताः पराक्रमम् ।
न मनुष्या न गन्धर्वा न यक्षाश्चारुलोचने ॥३१॥
31. na hi me rākṣasā bhīru soḍhuṁ śaktāḥ parākramam ,
na manuṣyā na gandharvā na yakṣāścārulocane.
31. na hi me rākṣasāḥ bhīru soḍhum śaktāḥ parākramam
na manuṣyāḥ na gandharvāḥ na yakṣāḥ cārulocane
31. O timid one, demons are certainly not capable of enduring my valor. Nor are humans, nor gandharvas, nor yakṣas, O lovely-eyed one.
गच्छ वा तिष्ठ वा भद्रे यद्वापीच्छसि तत्कुरु ।
तं वा प्रेषय तन्वङ्गि भ्रातरं पुरुषादकम् ॥३२॥
32. gaccha vā tiṣṭha vā bhadre yadvāpīcchasi tatkuru ,
taṁ vā preṣaya tanvaṅgi bhrātaraṁ puruṣādakam.
32. gaccha vā tiṣṭha vā bhadre yat vā api icchasi tat
kuru tam vā preṣaya tanvaṅgi bhrātaram puruṣādakam
32. O auspicious one, you may either go or stay, or indeed do whatever else you desire. Or, O slender-limbed one, send that man-eating brother.
