वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथा कथयतोरेव तयोर्बुद्धिमतोस्तदा ।
शिवा नक्षत्रसंपन्ना सा व्यतीयाय शर्वरी ॥१॥

1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: As those two intelligent ones were thus conversing, that auspicious, star-filled night passed.
धर्मार्थकामयुक्ताश्च विचित्रार्थपदाक्षराः ।
शृण्वतो विविधा वाचो विदुरस्य महात्मनः ॥२॥
2. dharmārthakāmayuktāśca vicitrārthapadākṣarāḥ ,
śṛṇvato vividhā vāco vidurasya mahātmanaḥ.

2. While listening to the diverse discourses of the great-souled (mahātman) Vidura, which were full of varied meanings, words, and syllables, and which pertained to natural law (dharma), prosperity (artha), and pleasure (kāma)...
कथाभिरनुरूपाभिः कृष्णस्यामिततेजसः ।
अकामस्येव कृष्णस्य सा व्यतीयाय शर्वरी ॥३॥
3. kathābhiranurūpābhiḥ kṛṣṇasyāmitatejasaḥ ,
akāmasyeva kṛṣṇasya sā vyatīyāya śarvarī.

3. That night, filled with suitable stories about Krishna, who possessed immeasurable splendor, passed for him as if he were entirely free from desires.
ततस्तु स्वरसंपन्ना बहवः सूतमागधाः ।
शङ्खदुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैः केशवं प्रत्यबोधयन् ॥४॥
4. tatastu svarasaṁpannā bahavaḥ sūtamāgadhāḥ ,
śaṅkhadundubhinirghoṣaiḥ keśavaṁ pratyabodhayan.

4. Then, many bards and panegyrists, endowed with pleasant voices, awakened Keshava (Krishna) with the sounds of conches and drums.
तत उत्थाय दाशार्ह ऋषभः सर्वसात्वताम् ।
सर्वमावश्यकं चक्रे प्रातःकार्यं जनार्दनः ॥५॥
5. tata utthāya dāśārha ṛṣabhaḥ sarvasātvatām ,
sarvamāvaśyakaṁ cakre prātaḥkāryaṁ janārdanaḥ.

5. Then Janardana (Krishna), the foremost of all Satvatas and a descendant of Dasharha, having risen, performed all the necessary morning duties.
कृतोदकार्यजप्यः स हुताग्निः समलंकृतः ।
तत आदित्यमुद्यन्तमुपातिष्ठत माधवः ॥६॥
6. kṛtodakāryajapyaḥ sa hutāgniḥ samalaṁkṛtaḥ ,
tata ādityamudyantamupātiṣṭhata mādhavaḥ.

6. He (Madhava), having completed his water rituals and sacred recitations (japa), and having offered oblations into the sacred fire, was adorned appropriately. Then Madhava (Krishna) reverently faced the rising sun.
अथ दुर्योधनः कृष्णं शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ।
संध्यां तिष्ठन्तमभ्येत्य दाशार्हमपराजितम् ॥७॥
7. atha duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇaṁ śakuniścāpi saubalaḥ ,
saṁdhyāṁ tiṣṭhantamabhyetya dāśārhamaparājitam.

sandhyām tiṣṭhantam abhyetya dāśārham aparājitam
7. Then Duryodhana, and also Shakuni, the son of Subala, having approached Krishna—the unconquered descendant of Dāśārha—who was standing for his evening worship.
आचक्षेतां तु कृष्णस्य धृतराष्ट्रं सभागतम् ।
कुरूंश्च भीष्मप्रमुखान्राज्ञः सर्वांश्च पार्थिवान् ॥८॥
8. ācakṣetāṁ tu kṛṣṇasya dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ sabhāgatam ,
kurūṁśca bhīṣmapramukhānrājñaḥ sarvāṁśca pārthivān.
8. ācakṣetām tu kṛṣṇasya dhṛtarāṣṭram sabhāgatam
kurūn ca bhīṣmapramukhān rājñaḥ sarvān ca pārthivān
8. They both then reported to Krishna concerning Dhritarashtra, who had come to the assembly, and the Kurus headed by Bhishma, and the kings and all other rulers.
त्वामर्थयन्ते गोविन्द दिवि शक्रमिवामराः ।
तावभ्यनन्दद्गोविन्दः साम्ना परमवल्गुना ॥९॥
9. tvāmarthayante govinda divi śakramivāmarāḥ ,
tāvabhyanandadgovindaḥ sāmnā paramavalgunā.
9. tvām arthayante govinda divi śakram iva amarāḥ
tau abhyanandat govindaḥ sāmnā paramavalguna
9. “They implore you, Govinda, just as the gods (amarāḥ) implore Indra in heaven.” Govinda then welcomed those two with exceedingly pleasing and gentle words.
ततो विमल आदित्ये ब्राह्मणेभ्यो जनार्दनः ।
ददौ हिरण्यं वासांसि गाश्चाश्वांश्च परंतपः ॥१०॥
10. tato vimala āditye brāhmaṇebhyo janārdanaḥ ,
dadau hiraṇyaṁ vāsāṁsi gāścāśvāṁśca paraṁtapaḥ.
10. tataḥ vimale āditye brāhmaṇebhyaḥ janārdanaḥ
dadau hiraṇyam vāsāṃsi gāḥ ca aśvān ca paraṃtapaḥ
10. Then, when the sun was shining brightly, Janardana, the vanquisher of foes, gave gold, garments, cows, and horses to the Brahmins.
विसृष्टवन्तं रत्नानि दाशार्हमपराजितम् ।
तिष्ठन्तमुपसंगम्य ववन्दे सारथिस्तदा ॥११॥
11. visṛṣṭavantaṁ ratnāni dāśārhamaparājitam ,
tiṣṭhantamupasaṁgamya vavande sārathistadā.

11. Then, the charioteer approached the unconquered Daśārha, who was standing there after having distributed jewels, and bowed to him.
तमुपस्थितमाज्ञाय रथं दिव्यं महामनाः ।
महाभ्रघननिर्घोषं सर्वरत्नविभूषितम् ॥१२॥
12. tamupasthitamājñāya rathaṁ divyaṁ mahāmanāḥ ,
mahābhraghananirghoṣaṁ sarvaratnavibhūṣitam.
12. tam upasthitam ājñāya ratham divyam mahāmanāḥ
mahābhraghananirghoṣam sarvaratnavibhūṣitam
12. The great-minded one, recognizing that divine chariot—which had arrived, thundering like a dense storm cloud and adorned with all sorts of jewels—...
अग्निं प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा ब्राह्मणांश्च जनार्दनः ।
कौस्तुभं मणिमामुच्य श्रिया परमया ज्वलन् ॥१३॥
13. agniṁ pradakṣiṇaṁ kṛtvā brāhmaṇāṁśca janārdanaḥ ,
kaustubhaṁ maṇimāmucya śriyā paramayā jvalan.
13. agnim pradakṣiṇam kṛtvā brāhmaṇān ca janārdanaḥ
kaustubham maṇim āmuchya śriyā paramayā jvalan
13. Janārdana, after circumambulating the fire and the Brahmins, and having fastened on the Kaustubha jewel, shone with supreme splendor.
कुरुभिः संवृतः कृष्णो वृष्णिभिश्चाभिरक्षितः ।
आतिष्ठत रथं शौरिः सर्वयादवनन्दनः ॥१४॥
14. kurubhiḥ saṁvṛtaḥ kṛṣṇo vṛṣṇibhiścābhirakṣitaḥ ,
ātiṣṭhata rathaṁ śauriḥ sarvayādavanandanaḥ.
14. kurubhiḥ saṃvṛtaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ vṛṣṇibhiḥ ca abhirakṣitaḥ
ātiṣṭhata ratham śauriḥ sarvayādavanandanaḥ
14. Krishna, also known as Śauri and the delight of all Yadavas, who was surrounded by the Kurus and protected by the Vṛṣṇis, then mounted the chariot.
अन्वारुरोह दाशार्हं विदुरः सर्वधर्मवित् ।
सर्वप्राणभृतां श्रेष्ठं सर्वधर्मभृतां वरम् ॥१५॥
15. anvāruroha dāśārhaṁ viduraḥ sarvadharmavit ,
sarvaprāṇabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ sarvadharmabhṛtāṁ varam.
15. anvāruroha dāśārham viduraḥ sarvadharmavit
sarvaprāṇabhṛtām śreṣṭham sarvadharmabhṛtām varam
15. Vidura, who was conversant with all principles of righteousness (dharma), ascended Krishna's chariot, Krishna being the best among all living beings and the most excellent among all who uphold their natural law (dharma).
ततो दुर्योधनः कृष्णं शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः ।
द्वितीयेन रथेनैनमन्वयातां परंतपम् ॥१६॥
16. tato duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇaṁ śakuniścāpi saubalaḥ ,
dvitīyena rathenainamanvayātāṁ paraṁtapam.
16. tataḥ duryodhanaḥ kṛṣṇam śakuniḥ ca api saubalaḥ
dvitīyena rathena enam anvayātām parantapam
16. Then Duryodhana, along with Shakuni, the son of Subala, followed Krishna, the tormentor of foes, in a second chariot.
सात्यकिः कृतवर्मा च वृष्णीनां च महारथाः ।
पृष्ठतोऽनुययुः कृष्णं रथैरश्वैर्गजैरपि ॥१७॥
17. sātyakiḥ kṛtavarmā ca vṛṣṇīnāṁ ca mahārathāḥ ,
pṛṣṭhato'nuyayuḥ kṛṣṇaṁ rathairaśvairgajairapi.
17. sātyakiḥ kṛtavarmā ca vṛṣṇīnām ca mahārathāḥ
pṛṣṭhataḥ anuyayuḥ kṛṣṇam rathaiḥ aśvaiḥ gajaiḥ api
17. Satyaki, Kritavarma, and the great charioteers of the Vṛṣṇi clan followed Krishna from behind, accompanied by their chariots, horses, and elephants.
तेषां हेमपरिष्कारा युक्ताः परमवाजिभिः ।
गच्छतां घोषिणश्चित्राश्चारु बभ्राजिरे रथाः ॥१८॥
18. teṣāṁ hemapariṣkārā yuktāḥ paramavājibhiḥ ,
gacchatāṁ ghoṣiṇaścitrāścāru babhrājire rathāḥ.
18. teṣām hemapariṣkārāḥ yuktāḥ paramavājibhiḥ
gacchhatām ghoṣiṇaḥ citrāḥ cāru babhrājire rathāḥ
18. As they traveled, their chariots, adorned with gold and yoked with excellent horses, were resonant and splendid, shining beautifully.
संमृष्टसंसिक्तरजः प्रतिपेदे महापथम् ।
राजर्षिचरितं काले कृष्णो धीमाञ्श्रिया ज्वलन् ॥१९॥
19. saṁmṛṣṭasaṁsiktarajaḥ pratipede mahāpatham ,
rājarṣicaritaṁ kāle kṛṣṇo dhīmāñśriyā jvalan.
19. saṃmṛṣṭasaṃsiktarajaḥ pratipede mahāpatham
rājarṣicaritam kāle kṛṣṇaḥ dhīmān śriyā jvalan
19. Kṛṣṇa, intelligent and resplendent with glory, at the appropriate time proceeded on the great highway. Its dust had been swept clean and sprinkled, in a manner befitting a royal sage (rājarṣi).
ततः प्रयाते दाशार्हे प्रावाद्यन्तैकपुष्कराः ।
शङ्खाश्च दध्मिरे तत्र वाद्यान्यन्यानि यानि च ॥२०॥
20. tataḥ prayāte dāśārhe prāvādyantaikapuṣkarāḥ ,
śaṅkhāśca dadhmire tatra vādyānyanyāni yāni ca.
20. tataḥ prayāte dāśārhe prāvādyanta ekapuṣkarāḥ
śaṅkhāḥ ca dadhmire tatra vādyāni anyāni yāni ca
20. Then, as Daśārha (Kṛṣṇa) departed, single-mouthed drums were sounded, and conch shells were blown there, along with various other musical instruments.
प्रवीराः सर्वलोकस्य युवानः सिंहविक्रमाः ।
परिवार्य रथं शौरेरगच्छन्त परंतपाः ॥२१॥
21. pravīrāḥ sarvalokasya yuvānaḥ siṁhavikramāḥ ,
parivārya rathaṁ śaureragacchanta paraṁtapāḥ.
21. pravīrāḥ sarvalokasya yuvānaḥ siṃhavikramāḥ
parivārya ratham śaureḥ agacchant paraṃtapāḥ
21. The foremost heroes of all the people, young men possessing the valor of lions and tormentors of foes, surrounded the chariot of Śauri (Kṛṣṇa) and went forth.
ततोऽन्ये बहुसाहस्रा विचित्राद्भुतवाससः ।
असिप्रासायुधधराः कृष्णस्यासन्पुरःसराः ॥२२॥
22. tato'nye bahusāhasrā vicitrādbhutavāsasaḥ ,
asiprāsāyudhadharāḥ kṛṣṇasyāsanpuraḥsarāḥ.
22. tataḥ anye bahusāhasrāḥ vicitrādbhūtavāsasaḥ
asiprāsāyudhadharāḥ kṛṣṇasya āsan puraḥsarāḥ
22. Then, many thousands of others, clad in wondrous and splendid garments, bearing swords, spears, and other weapons, served as Kṛṣṇa's vanguard.
गजाः परःशतास्तत्र वराश्चाश्वाः सहस्रशः ।
प्रयान्तमन्वयुर्वीरं दाशार्हमपराजितम् ॥२३॥
23. gajāḥ paraḥśatāstatra varāścāśvāḥ sahasraśaḥ ,
prayāntamanvayurvīraṁ dāśārhamaparājitam.
23. gajāḥ paraḥśatāḥ tatra varāḥ ca aśvāḥ sahasraśaḥ
prayāntam anvayuḥ vīram dāśārham aparājitam
23. More than a hundred elephants and thousands of excellent horses followed the unconquered hero, Daśārha, as he departed.
पुरं कुरूणां संवृत्तं द्रष्टुकामं जनार्दनम् ।
सवृद्धबालं सस्त्रीकं रथ्यागतमरिंदमम् ॥२४॥
24. puraṁ kurūṇāṁ saṁvṛttaṁ draṣṭukāmaṁ janārdanam ,
savṛddhabālaṁ sastrīkaṁ rathyāgatamariṁdamam.
24. puram kurūṇām saṃvṛttam draṣṭukāmam janārdanam
savṛddhabālam sastrīkam rathyāgatam ariṃdamam
24. The city of the Kurus became crowded with old people, children, and women who had come out onto the streets, all eager to see Janārdana, the subduer of enemies.
वेदिकापाश्रिताभिश्च समाक्रान्तान्यनेकशः ।
प्रचलन्तीव भारेण योषिद्भिर्भवनान्युत ॥२५॥
25. vedikāpāśritābhiśca samākrāntānyanekaśaḥ ,
pracalantīva bhāreṇa yoṣidbhirbhavanānyuta.
25. vedikāpāśritābhiḥ ca samākrāntāni anekaśaḥ
pracalanti iva bhāreṇa yoṣidbhiḥ bhavanāni uta
25. And the houses, largely filled and crowded by women, as well as by those leaning on platforms, seemed to be trembling under their weight.
संपूज्यमानः कुरुभिः संशृण्वन्विविधाः कथाः ।
यथार्हं प्रतिसत्कुर्वन्प्रेक्षमाणः शनैर्ययौ ॥२६॥
26. saṁpūjyamānaḥ kurubhiḥ saṁśṛṇvanvividhāḥ kathāḥ ,
yathārhaṁ pratisatkurvanprekṣamāṇaḥ śanairyayau.
26. sampūjyamānaḥ kurubhiḥ saṃśṛṇvan vividhāḥ kathāḥ
yathārham pratisatkurvan prekṣamāṇaḥ śanaiḥ yayau
26. Being honored by the Kurus, listening to various stories, appropriately returning greetings, and observing the surroundings, he proceeded slowly.
ततः सभां समासाद्य केशवस्यानुयायिनः ।
सशङ्खैर्वेणुनिर्घोषैर्दिशः सर्वा व्यनादयन् ॥२७॥
27. tataḥ sabhāṁ samāsādya keśavasyānuyāyinaḥ ,
saśaṅkhairveṇunirghoṣairdiśaḥ sarvā vyanādayan.
27. tataḥ sabhām samāsādya keśavasya anuyāyinaḥ
saśaṅkhaiḥ veṇunirghoṣaiḥ diśaḥ sarvā vyanādayan
27. Then, having reached the assembly hall, the followers of Keśava made all directions resound with the sounds of conches and flutes.
ततः सा समितिः सर्वा राज्ञाममिततेजसाम् ।
संप्राकम्पत हर्षेण कृष्णागमनकाङ्क्षया ॥२८॥
28. tataḥ sā samitiḥ sarvā rājñāmamitatejasām ,
saṁprākampata harṣeṇa kṛṣṇāgamanakāṅkṣayā.
28. tataḥ sā samitiḥ sarvā rājñām amitatejasām
samprākampata harṣeṇa kṛṣṇāgamanakāṅkṣayā
28. Then, that entire assembly of kings of immeasurable splendor trembled with joy due to their eager anticipation of Kṛṣṇa's arrival.
ततोऽभ्याशगते कृष्णे समहृष्यन्नराधिपाः ।
श्रुत्वा तं रथनिर्घोषं पर्जन्यनिनदोपमम् ॥२९॥
29. tato'bhyāśagate kṛṣṇe samahṛṣyannarādhipāḥ ,
śrutvā taṁ rathanirghoṣaṁ parjanyaninadopamam.
29. tataḥ abhyāśagate kṛṣṇe samahṛṣyan narādhipāḥ
śrutvā tam rathanirghoṣam parjanyaninadopamam
29. Then, as Kṛṣṇa approached, the kings rejoiced, having heard the sound of his chariot, which resembled the rumble of thunderclouds.
आसाद्य तु सभाद्वारमृषभः सर्वसात्वताम् ।
अवतीर्य रथाच्छौरिः कैलासशिखरोपमात् ॥३०॥
30. āsādya tu sabhādvāramṛṣabhaḥ sarvasātvatām ,
avatīrya rathācchauriḥ kailāsaśikharopamāt.
30. āsādya tu sabhādvāram ṛṣabhaḥ sarvasātvatām
avatīrya rathāt śauriḥ kailāsaśikharopamāt
30. Then, having indeed reached the entrance of the assembly hall, Śauri (Kṛṣṇa), the foremost among all Sātvatas, descended from his chariot, which resembled a peak of Mount Kailāsa.
नगमेघप्रतीकाशां ज्वलन्तीमिव तेजसा ।
महेन्द्रसदनप्रख्यां प्रविवेश सभां ततः ॥३१॥
31. nagameghapratīkāśāṁ jvalantīmiva tejasā ,
mahendrasadanaprakhyāṁ praviveśa sabhāṁ tataḥ.
31. nagameghapratīkāśām jvalantīm iva tejasā |
mahendrasadanaprakhyām praviveśa sabhām tataḥ
31. Then he entered the assembly hall, which was renowned like the abode of the great Indra, and appeared like mountains and clouds, shining as if ablaze with splendor.
पाणौ गृहीत्वा विदुरं सात्यकिं च महायशाः ।
ज्योतींष्यादित्यवद्राजन्कुरून्प्रच्छादयञ्श्रिया ॥३२॥
32. pāṇau gṛhītvā viduraṁ sātyakiṁ ca mahāyaśāḥ ,
jyotīṁṣyādityavadrājankurūnpracchādayañśriyā.
32. pāṇau gṛhītvā viduram sātyakim ca mahāyaśāḥ |
jyotīṃṣi ādityavat rājan kurūn pracchādayan śriyā
32. The greatly renowned one (Krishna), taking Vidura and Satyaki by the hand, shone like many suns, eclipsing the Kurus with his splendor.
अग्रतो वासुदेवस्य कर्णदुर्योधनावुभौ ।
वृष्णयः कृतवर्मा च आसन्कृष्णस्य पृष्ठतः ॥३३॥
33. agrato vāsudevasya karṇaduryodhanāvubhau ,
vṛṣṇayaḥ kṛtavarmā ca āsankṛṣṇasya pṛṣṭhataḥ.
33. agrataḥ vāsudevasya karṇaduryodhanau ubhau |
vṛṣṇayaḥ kṛtavarmā ca āsan kṛṣṇasya pṛṣṭhataḥ
33. Both Karna and Duryodhana were in front of Vasudeva (Krishna), while the Vrishnis and Kritavarma were behind Krishna.
धृतराष्ट्रं पुरस्कृत्य भीष्मद्रोणादयस्ततः ।
आसनेभ्योऽचलन्सर्वे पूजयन्तो जनार्दनम् ॥३४॥
34. dhṛtarāṣṭraṁ puraskṛtya bhīṣmadroṇādayastataḥ ,
āsanebhyo'calansarve pūjayanto janārdanam.
34. dhṛtarāṣṭram puraskṛtya bhīṣmadroṇādayaḥ tataḥ
| āsanebhyaḥ acalan sarve pūjayantaḥ janārdanam
34. Then, placing Dhritarashtra at the forefront, Bhishma, Drona, and all the others rose from their seats, honoring Janardana (Krishna).
अभ्यागच्छति दाशार्हे प्रज्ञाचक्षुर्महामनाः ।
सहैव भीष्मद्रोणाभ्यामुदतिष्ठन्महायशाः ॥३५॥
35. abhyāgacchati dāśārhe prajñācakṣurmahāmanāḥ ,
sahaiva bhīṣmadroṇābhyāmudatiṣṭhanmahāyaśāḥ.
35. abhyāgacchati dāśārhe prajñācakṣuḥ mahāmanāḥ
saha eva bhīṣmadroṇābhyām udatiṣṭhat mahāyaśāḥ
35. When Kṛṣṇa (Dāśārha) approached, the great-minded and highly renowned king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, whose vision was wisdom, stood up along with Bhīṣma and Droṇa.
उत्तिष्ठति महाराजे धृतराष्ट्रे जनेश्वरे ।
तानि राजसहस्राणि समुत्तस्थुः समन्ततः ॥३६॥
36. uttiṣṭhati mahārāje dhṛtarāṣṭre janeśvare ,
tāni rājasahasrāṇi samuttasthuḥ samantataḥ.

36. As the great king Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the lord of men, rose, those thousands of kings also stood up all around him.
आसनं सर्वतोभद्रं जाम्बूनदपरिष्कृतम् ।
कृष्णार्थे कल्पितं तत्र धृतराष्ट्रस्य शासनात् ॥३७॥
37. āsanaṁ sarvatobhadraṁ jāmbūnadapariṣkṛtam ,
kṛṣṇārthe kalpitaṁ tatra dhṛtarāṣṭrasya śāsanāt.

37. There, a universally excellent seat, adorned with gold, was prepared for Kṛṣṇa by the command of Dhṛtarāṣṭra.
स्मयमानस्तु राजानं भीष्मद्रोणौ च माधवः ।
अभ्यभाषत धर्मात्मा राज्ञश्चान्यान्यथावयः ॥३८॥
38. smayamānastu rājānaṁ bhīṣmadroṇau ca mādhavaḥ ,
abhyabhāṣata dharmātmā rājñaścānyānyathāvayaḥ.
38. smayamānaḥ tu rājānam bhīṣmadroṇau ca mādhavaḥ
abhyabhāṣata dharmātmā rājñaḥ ca anyān yathāvayaḥ
38. But Mādhava (Kṛṣṇa), whose soul was righteous (dharma), smiled and addressed the king, Bhīṣma, Droṇa, and other kings according to their age.
तत्र केशवमानर्चुः सम्यगभ्यागतं सभाम् ।
राजानः पार्थिवाः सर्वे कुरवश्च जनार्दनम् ॥३९॥
39. tatra keśavamānarcuḥ samyagabhyāgataṁ sabhām ,
rājānaḥ pārthivāḥ sarve kuravaśca janārdanam.
39. tatra keśavam ānarcuḥ samyak abhyāgatam sabhām
rājānaḥ pārthivāḥ sarve kuravaḥ ca janārdanam
39. There, all the kings, rulers, and the Kurus, upon his arrival at the assembly, properly worshipped Keshava (Krishna) and Janardana (Krishna).
तत्र तिष्ठन्स दाशार्हो राजमध्ये परंतपः ।
अपश्यदन्तरिक्षस्थानृषीन्परपुरंजयः ॥४०॥
40. tatra tiṣṭhansa dāśārho rājamadhye paraṁtapaḥ ,
apaśyadantarikṣasthānṛṣīnparapuraṁjayaḥ.
40. tatra tiṣṭhan saḥ dāśārhaḥ rājamadhye paraṃtapaḥ
apaśyat antarikṣasthān ṛṣīn parapurañjayaḥ
40. While standing there amidst the kings, that descendant of Dasharha (Krishna), the scorcher of foes, the conqueror of enemy cities, saw the sages dwelling in the sky.
ततस्तानभिसंप्रेक्ष्य नारदप्रमुखानृषीन् ।
अभ्यभाषत दाशार्हो भीष्मं शांतनवं शनैः ॥४१॥
41. tatastānabhisaṁprekṣya nāradapramukhānṛṣīn ,
abhyabhāṣata dāśārho bhīṣmaṁ śāṁtanavaṁ śanaiḥ.
41. tataḥ tān abhisaṃprekṣya nāradapramukhān ṛṣīn
abhyabhāṣata dāśārhaḥ bhīṣmam śāṃtanavam śanaiḥ
41. Then, having thoroughly observed those sages led by Narada, the descendant of Dasharha (Krishna) softly addressed Bhishma, the son of Shantanu.
पार्थिवीं समितिं द्रष्टुमृषयोऽभ्यागता नृप ।
निमन्त्र्यन्तामासनैश्च सत्कारेण च भूयसा ॥४२॥
42. pārthivīṁ samitiṁ draṣṭumṛṣayo'bhyāgatā nṛpa ,
nimantryantāmāsanaiśca satkāreṇa ca bhūyasā.
42. pārthivīm samitim draṣṭum ṛṣayaḥ abhyāgatāḥ nṛpa
nimantryantām āsanaiḥ ca satkāreṇa ca bhūyasā
42. O King, the sages have arrived to witness this earthly assembly. Let them be invited with seats and abundant hospitality.
नैतेष्वनुपविष्टेषु शक्यं केनचिदासितुम् ।
पूजा प्रयुज्यतामाशु मुनीनां भावितात्मनाम् ॥४३॥
43. naiteṣvanupaviṣṭeṣu śakyaṁ kenacidāsitum ,
pūjā prayujyatāmāśu munīnāṁ bhāvitātmanām.
43. na eteṣu anupaviṣṭeṣu śakyam kenacit āsitum
pūjā prayujyatām āśu munīnām bhāvitātmanām
43. While these sages have not yet been seated, it is not proper for anyone to sit. Therefore, quickly offer respectful worship to these sages whose inner self (ātman) has been cultivated.
ऋषीञ्शांतनवो दृष्ट्वा सभाद्वारमुपस्थितान् ।
त्वरमाणस्ततो भृत्यानासनानीत्यचोदयत् ॥४४॥
44. ṛṣīñśāṁtanavo dṛṣṭvā sabhādvāramupasthitān ,
tvaramāṇastato bhṛtyānāsanānītyacodayat.
44. ṛṣīn śāntanavaḥ dṛṣṭvā sabhādvāram upasthitān
tvaramāṇaḥ tataḥ bhṛtyān āsanāni iti acodayat
44. After seeing the sages present at the assembly hall's entrance, Bhishma (śāntanavaḥ), hurrying, then instructed his servants concerning the seats.
आसनान्यथ मृष्टानि महान्ति विपुलानि च ।
मणिकाञ्चनचित्राणि समाजह्रुस्ततस्ततः ॥४५॥
45. āsanānyatha mṛṣṭāni mahānti vipulāni ca ,
maṇikāñcanacitrāṇi samājahrustatastataḥ.
45. āsanāni atha mṛṣṭāni mahānti vipulāni ca
maṇikāñcanacitrāṇi samājahruḥ tataḥ tataḥ
45. Then, clean, large, and extensive seats, adorned with jewels and gold, were brought from various places.
तेषु तत्रोपविष्टेषु गृहीतार्घेषु भारत ।
निषसादासने कृष्णो राजानश्च यथासनम् ॥४६॥
46. teṣu tatropaviṣṭeṣu gṛhītārgheṣu bhārata ,
niṣasādāsane kṛṣṇo rājānaśca yathāsanam.
46. teṣu tatra upaviṣṭeṣu gṛhītārgheṣu bhārata
niṣasāda āsane kṛṣṇaḥ rājānaḥ ca yathāsanam
46. O Bhārata, after those sages had taken their seats there and received their ceremonial offerings, Krishna sat on his designated seat, and the other kings sat down according to their proper places.
दुःशासनः सात्यकये ददावासनमुत्तमम् ।
विविंशतिर्ददौ पीठं काञ्चनं कृतवर्मणे ॥४७॥
47. duḥśāsanaḥ sātyakaye dadāvāsanamuttamam ,
viviṁśatirdadau pīṭhaṁ kāñcanaṁ kṛtavarmaṇe.
47. duḥśāsanaḥ sātyakaye dadau āsanam uttamam
viviṃśatiḥ dadau pīṭham kāñcanam kṛtavarmaṇe
47. Duḥśāsana offered an excellent seat to Sātyaki, while Viviṃśati presented a golden stool to Kṛtavarman.
अविदूरेऽथ कृष्णस्य कर्णदुर्योधनावुभौ ।
एकासने महात्मानौ निषीदतुरमर्षणौ ॥४८॥
48. avidūre'tha kṛṣṇasya karṇaduryodhanāvubhau ,
ekāsane mahātmānau niṣīdaturamarṣaṇau.
48. avidūre atha kṛṣṇasya karṇaduryodhanau
ubhau ekāsane mahātmānau niṣīdatuḥ amarṣaṇau
48. Then, not far from Kṛṣṇa, both Karṇa and Duryodhana, those great-souled (mahātman) and intolerant (amarṣaṇa) individuals, sat down together on a single seat.
गान्धारराजः शकुनिर्गान्धारैरभिरक्षितः ।
निषसादासने राजा सहपुत्रो विशां पते ॥४९॥
49. gāndhārarājaḥ śakunirgāndhārairabhirakṣitaḥ ,
niṣasādāsane rājā sahaputro viśāṁ pate.
49. gāndhārarājaḥ śakuniḥ gāndhāraiḥ abhirakṣitaḥ
niṣasāda āsane rājā sahaputraḥ viśām pate
49. O Lord of the people, King Śakuni, the ruler of Gāndhāra and guarded by the Gāndhāras, sat down on a seat with his son.
विदुरो मणिपीठे तु शुक्लस्पर्ध्याजिनोत्तरे ।
संस्पृशन्नासनं शौरेर्महामतिरुपाविशत् ॥५०॥
50. viduro maṇipīṭhe tu śuklaspardhyājinottare ,
saṁspṛśannāsanaṁ śaurermahāmatirupāviśat.
50. viduraḥ maṇipīṭhe tu śuklaspardhyājinottare
saṃspṛśan āsanam śaureḥ mahāmatiḥ upāviśat
50. But the highly intelligent (mahāmati) Vidura, touching the seat of Śauri (Kṛṣṇa), sat down on a jeweled stool that was covered with a superior white deerskin, itself so fine as to be worthy of emulation.
चिरस्य दृष्ट्वा दाशार्हं राजानः सर्वपार्थिवाः ।
अमृतस्येव नातृप्यन्प्रेक्षमाणा जनार्दनम् ॥५१॥
51. cirasya dṛṣṭvā dāśārhaṁ rājānaḥ sarvapārthivāḥ ,
amṛtasyeva nātṛpyanprekṣamāṇā janārdanam.
51. cirasya dṛṣṭvā dāśārham rājānaḥ sarvapārthivāḥ
amṛtasya iva na atṛpyan prekṣamāṇā janārdanam
51. All the kings, having seen the descendant of Daśārha (Kṛṣṇa) after a long time, did not feel satisfied, as if gazing at nectar, as they looked upon Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa).
अतसीपुष्पसंकाशः पीतवासा जनार्दनः ।
व्यभ्राजत सभामध्ये हेम्नीवोपहितो मणिः ॥५२॥
52. atasīpuṣpasaṁkāśaḥ pītavāsā janārdanaḥ ,
vyabhrājata sabhāmadhye hemnīvopahito maṇiḥ.
52. atasīpuṣpasaṃkāśaḥ pītavāsā janārdanaḥ vi
abhrājat sabhā madhye hemani iva upahitaḥ maṇiḥ
52. Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), resembling a flax flower and clad in yellow garments, shone brightly in the midst of the assembly like a jewel set in gold.
ततस्तूष्णीं सर्वमासीद्गोविन्दगतमानसम् ।
न तत्र कश्चित्किंचिद्धि व्याजहार पुमान्क्वचित् ॥५३॥
53. tatastūṣṇīṁ sarvamāsīdgovindagatamānasam ,
na tatra kaścitkiṁciddhi vyājahāra pumānkvacit.
53. tataḥ tūṣṇīm sarvam āsīt govindagatamānasam na
tatra kaścit kiñcit hi vyājahāra pumān kvacit
53. Then, everything became silent, as everyone's mind was fixed on Govinda (Kṛṣṇa). No one present there spoke anything at all.
