जनमेजय उवाच ।
तमप्रतिमसत्त्वौजोबलवीर्यपराक्रमम् ।
हतं देवव्रतं श्रुत्वा पाञ्चाल्येन शिखण्डिना ॥१॥

धृतराष्ट्रस्तदा राजा शोकव्याकुलचेतनः ।
किमचेष्टत विप्रर्षे हते पितरि वीर्यवान् ॥२॥
2. dhṛtarāṣṭrastadā rājā śokavyākulacetanaḥ ,
kimaceṣṭata viprarṣe hate pitari vīryavān.

2. Then, O sage, what did the powerful King Dhritarashtra do, his mind agitated by grief, when his father (Bhīṣma) was killed?
तस्य पुत्रो हि भगवन्भीष्मद्रोणमुखै रथैः ।
पराजित्य महेष्वासान्पाण्डवान्राज्यमिच्छति ॥३॥
3. tasya putro hi bhagavanbhīṣmadroṇamukhai rathaiḥ ,
parājitya maheṣvāsānpāṇḍavānrājyamicchati.

3. Indeed, O venerable one (Bhagavan), his son desires the kingdom, having defeated the great archer Pāṇḍavas with charioteers led by Bhīṣma and Droṇa.
तस्मिन्हते तु भगवन्केतौ सर्वधनुष्मताम् ।
यदचेष्टत कौरव्यस्तन्मे ब्रूहि द्विजोत्तम ॥४॥
4. tasminhate tu bhagavanketau sarvadhanuṣmatām ,
yadaceṣṭata kauravyastanme brūhi dvijottama.
4. tasmin hate tu bhagavan ketau sarvadhanuṣmatām
yat aceṣṭata kauravyaḥ tat me brūhi dvija-uttama
4. bhagavan dvijottama,
tasmin sarvadhanuṣmatām ketau hate (sati) tu,
kauravyaḥ yat aceṣṭata,
tat me brūhi.
4. O revered one (bhagavan), best among twice-born ones (dvijottama), tell me what the Kuru prince (kauravya) did then, when that foremost among all archers was slain.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
निहतं पितरं श्रुत्वा धृतराष्ट्रो जनाधिपः ।
लेभे न शान्तिं कौरव्यश्चिन्ताशोकपरायणः ॥५॥
5. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
nihataṁ pitaraṁ śrutvā dhṛtarāṣṭro janādhipaḥ ,
lebhe na śāntiṁ kauravyaścintāśokaparāyaṇaḥ.
5. vaiśampāyana uvāca nihataṃ pitaram śrutvā dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ
janādhipaḥ lebhe na śāntim kauravyaḥ cintā-śoka-parāyaṇaḥ

5. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: Hearing that his father (Bhishma) was slain, King Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the Kuru prince, became entirely consumed by anxiety and grief, and found no peace.
तस्य चिन्तयतो दुःखमनिशं पार्थिवस्य तत् ।
आजगाम विशुद्धात्मा पुनर्गावल्गणिस्तदा ॥६॥
6. tasya cintayato duḥkhamaniśaṁ pārthivasya tat ,
ājagāma viśuddhātmā punargāvalgaṇistadā.
6. tasya cintayataḥ duḥkham aniśam pārthivasya
tat ājagāma viśuddha-ātmā punar gāvalgaṇiḥ tadā
6. tadā tasya pārthivasya aniśam duḥkham cintayataḥ (sati),
punar viśuddhātmā gāvalgaṇiḥ tat ājagāma.
6. While that king was thus continuously grieving and anxious, then again Sañjaya (Gāvalgaṇi), the pure-minded one, arrived.
शिबिरात्संजयं प्राप्तं निशि नागाह्वयं पुरम् ।
आम्बिकेयो महाराज धृतराष्ट्रोऽन्वपृच्छत ॥७॥
7. śibirātsaṁjayaṁ prāptaṁ niśi nāgāhvayaṁ puram ,
āmbikeyo mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭro'nvapṛcchata.
7. śibirāt sañjayam prāptam niśi nāga-āhvayam puram
āmbikeyaḥ mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ anvapṛcchat
7. mahārāja,
āmbikeyaḥ dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ (tasmāt) śibirāt niśi nāgāhvayam puram prāptam sañjayam anvapṛcchat.
7. O great king (mahārāja), Dhṛtarāṣṭra, son of Ambikā (Āmbikeya), questioned Sañjaya, who had arrived from the camp at night in the city named Nāga.
श्रुत्वा भीष्मस्य निधनमप्रहृष्टमना भृशम् ।
पुत्राणां जयमाकाङ्क्षन्विललापातुरो यथा ॥८॥
8. śrutvā bhīṣmasya nidhanamaprahṛṣṭamanā bhṛśam ,
putrāṇāṁ jayamākāṅkṣanvilalāpāturo yathā.

8. Greatly disheartened upon hearing of Bhishma's death, and still wishing for the victory of his sons, he lamented like one deeply distressed.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
संसाध्य तु महात्मानं भीष्मं भीमपराक्रमम् ।
किमकार्षुः परं तात कुरवः कालचोदिताः ॥९॥
9. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
saṁsādhya tu mahātmānaṁ bhīṣmaṁ bhīmaparākramam ,
kimakārṣuḥ paraṁ tāta kuravaḥ kālacoditāḥ.
9. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca saṃsādhya tu mahātmānam bhīṣmam
bhīmaparākramam kim akārṣuḥ param tāta kuravaḥ kālacoditāḥ

9. Dhritarashtra said: "My dear son, after the great-souled (mahātman) Bhishma, whose valor was formidable, had been brought down, what did the Kurus, impelled by time (kāla), do then?"
तस्मिन्विनिहते शूरे दुराधर्षे महौजसि ।
किं नु स्वित्कुरवोऽकार्षुर्निमग्नाः शोकसागरे ॥१०॥
10. tasminvinihate śūre durādharṣe mahaujasi ,
kiṁ nu svitkuravo'kārṣurnimagnāḥ śokasāgare.
10. tasmin vinihate śūre durādharṣe mahojasi kim
nu svit kuravaḥ akārṣuḥ nimagnāḥ śokasāgare
10. tasmin śūre durādharṣe mahojasi vinihate sati

10. When that heroic, invincible, and mighty warrior was slain, what indeed could the Kurus, submerged in an ocean of sorrow, have done?
तदुदीर्णं महत्सैन्यं त्रैलोक्यस्यापि संजय ।
भयमुत्पादयेत्तीव्रं पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम् ॥११॥
11. tadudīrṇaṁ mahatsainyaṁ trailokyasyāpi saṁjaya ,
bhayamutpādayettīvraṁ pāṇḍavānāṁ mahātmanām.
11. tat udīrṇam mahat sainyam trailokyasya api saṃjaya
bhayam utpādayet tīvram pāṇḍavānām mahātmanām
11. he saṃjaya tat udīrṇam mahat sainyam trailokyasya api
tīvram bhayam utpādayet (kim uta) mahātmanām pāṇḍavānām
11. O Sanjaya, that great and formidable army would instill intense fear even in the three worlds, and certainly in the great-souled (mahātman) Pandavas.
देवव्रते तु निहते कुरूणामृषभे तदा ।
यदकार्षुर्नृपतयस्तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥१२॥
12. devavrate tu nihate kurūṇāmṛṣabhe tadā ,
yadakārṣurnṛpatayastanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.

akārṣuḥ nṛpatayaḥ tat mama ācakṣva saṃjaya

12. Sanjaya, tell me what the kings did then, when Devavrata, the best of the Kurus, was killed.
संजय उवाच ।
शृणु राजन्नेकमना वचनं ब्रुवतो मम ।
यत्ते पुत्रास्तदाकार्षुर्हते देवव्रते मृधे ॥१३॥
13. saṁjaya uvāca ,
śṛṇu rājannekamanā vacanaṁ bruvato mama ,
yatte putrāstadākārṣurhate devavrate mṛdhe.
13. saṃjaya uvāca śṛṇu rājan ekamanāḥ vacanam bruvataḥ
mama yat te putrāḥ tadā akārṣuḥ hate devavrate mṛdhe

13. Sanjaya said: O King, listen with full attention to my words about what your sons did then, when Devavrata was killed in battle.
निहते तु तदा भीष्मे राजन्सत्यपराक्रमे ।
तावकाः पाण्डवेयाश्च प्राध्यायन्त पृथक्पृथक् ॥१४॥
14. nihate tu tadā bhīṣme rājansatyaparākrame ,
tāvakāḥ pāṇḍaveyāśca prādhyāyanta pṛthakpṛthak.
14. nihate tu tadā bhīṣme rājan satyaparākrame
tāvakāḥ pāṇḍaveyāḥ ca prādhyāyanta pṛthakpṛthak
14. rājan tadā satyaparākrame bhīṣme tu nihate
tāvakāḥ ca pāṇḍaveyāḥ pṛthakpṛthak prādhyāyanta
14. O King, when Bhishma, of true valor, was then killed, your people and the Pandavas both deeply pondered their positions separately.
विस्मिताश्च प्रहृष्टाश्च क्षत्रधर्मं निशाम्य ते ।
स्वधर्मं निन्दमानाश्च प्रणिपत्य महात्मने ॥१५॥
15. vismitāśca prahṛṣṭāśca kṣatradharmaṁ niśāmya te ,
svadharmaṁ nindamānāśca praṇipatya mahātmane.
15. vismitāḥ ca prahr̥ṣṭāḥ ca kṣatradharmam niśāmya
te svadharmam nindamānāḥ ca praṇipatya mahātmane
15. te vismitāḥ ca prahr̥ṣṭāḥ ca kṣatradharmam niśāmya
ca svadharmam nindamānāḥ mahātmane praṇipatya
15. Both astonished and delighted, they observed the warrior's constitution (kṣatradharma); then, blaming their own intrinsic nature (svadharma), they bowed down to the great soul (mahātman).
शयनं कल्पयामासुर्भीष्मायामिततेजसे ।
सोपधानं नरव्याघ्र शरैः संनतपर्वभिः ॥१६॥
16. śayanaṁ kalpayāmāsurbhīṣmāyāmitatejase ,
sopadhānaṁ naravyāghra śaraiḥ saṁnataparvabhiḥ.
16. śayanaṃ kalpayāmāsuḥ bhīṣmāya amitatejase
sopadhānaṃ naravyāghra śaraiḥ sannataparvabhiḥ
16. amitatejase naravyāghra bhīṣmāya sopadhānaṃ
śayanaṃ sannataparvabhiḥ śaraiḥ kalpayāmāsuḥ
16. They prepared a bed for Bhishma, that tiger among men, of immeasurable energy, a bed complete with a pillow, using arrows with bent shafts.
विधाय रक्षां भीष्माय समाभाष्य परस्परम् ।
अनुमान्य च गाङ्गेयं कृत्वा चापि प्रदक्षिणम् ॥१७॥
17. vidhāya rakṣāṁ bhīṣmāya samābhāṣya parasparam ,
anumānya ca gāṅgeyaṁ kṛtvā cāpi pradakṣiṇam.
17. vidhāya rakṣāṃ bhīṣmāya samābhāṣya parasparam
anumānya ca gāṅgeyaṃ kṛtvā ca api pradakṣiṇam
17. bhīṣmāya rakṣāṃ vidhāya parasparam samābhāṣya

17. After providing protection for Bhishma, conversing among themselves, taking leave of Gangeya (Bhishma), and also performing a respectful circumambulation.
क्रोधसंरक्तनयनाः समवेक्ष्य परस्परम् ।
पुनर्युद्धाय निर्जग्मुः क्षत्रियाः कालचोदिताः ॥१८॥
18. krodhasaṁraktanayanāḥ samavekṣya parasparam ,
punaryuddhāya nirjagmuḥ kṣatriyāḥ kālacoditāḥ.
18. krodhasaṃraktanayanāḥ samavekṣya parasparam
punaḥ yuddhāya nirjagmuḥ kṣatriyāḥ kālacoditāḥ

18. With their eyes reddened by wrath, the Kshatriya warriors, having looked at each other and impelled by the force of time (kāla), again set forth for battle.
ततस्तूर्यनिनादैश्च भेरीणां च महास्वनैः ।
तावकानामनीकानि परेषां चापि निर्ययुः ॥१९॥
19. tatastūryaninādaiśca bherīṇāṁ ca mahāsvanaiḥ ,
tāvakānāmanīkāni pareṣāṁ cāpi niryayuḥ.
19. tataḥ tūryaninādaiḥ ca bherīṇāṃ ca mahāsvanaiḥ
tāvakānām anīkāni pareṣāṃ ca api niryayuḥ
19. tataḥ tūryaninādaiḥ ca bherīṇāṃ ca mahāsvanaiḥ
tāvakānām anīkāni ca api pareṣām niryayuḥ
19. Then, amidst the sounds of trumpets and the great roars of drums, your armies (Kauravas) and also those of the enemies (the Pāṇḍavas) advanced.
व्यावृत्तेऽहनि राजेन्द्र पतिते जाह्नवीसुते ।
अमर्षवशमापन्नाः कालोपहतचेतसः ॥२०॥
20. vyāvṛtte'hani rājendra patite jāhnavīsute ,
amarṣavaśamāpannāḥ kālopahatacetasaḥ.
20. vyāvṛtte ahani rājendra patite jāhnavīsute
amarṣavaśam āpannāḥ kāla upahata cetasaḥ
20. rājendra vyāvṛtte ahani jāhnavīsute patite
kāla upahata cetasaḥ amarṣavaśam āpannāḥ
20. O king of kings, when the day had ended and the son of Jahnavī (Bhishma) had fallen, their minds clouded by destiny, they became overcome by indignation.
अनादृत्य वचः पथ्यं गाङ्गेयस्य महात्मनः ।
निर्ययुर्भरतश्रेष्ठाः शस्त्राण्यादाय सर्वशः ॥२१॥
21. anādṛtya vacaḥ pathyaṁ gāṅgeyasya mahātmanaḥ ,
niryayurbharataśreṣṭhāḥ śastrāṇyādāya sarvaśaḥ.
21. anādṛtya vacaḥ pathyam gāṅgeyasya mahātmanaḥ
niryayuḥ bharataśreṣṭhāḥ śastrāṇi ādāya sarvaśaḥ

21. Disregarding the beneficial words of the great-souled son of Gangā (Bhishma), the foremost among the Bharatas went forth, fully taking up their weapons.
मोहात्तव सपुत्रस्य वधाच्छांतनवस्य च ।
कौरव्या मृत्युसाद्भूताः सहिताः सर्वराजभिः ॥२२॥
22. mohāttava saputrasya vadhācchāṁtanavasya ca ,
kauravyā mṛtyusādbhūtāḥ sahitāḥ sarvarājabhiḥ.
22. mohāt tava saputrasya vadhāt śāntanavasya ca
kauravyāḥ mṛtyusāt bhūtāḥ sahitāḥ sarvarājabhiḥ
22. tava saputrasya mohāt ca śāntanavasya vadhāt
kauravyāḥ sarvarājabhiḥ sahitāḥ mṛtyusāt bhūtāḥ
22. Due to the delusion (moha) of you, with your sons, and due to the killing of Shantanu's son (Bhishma), the Kauravas, along with all the kings, became subject to death.
अजावय इवागोपा वने श्वापदसंकुले ।
भृशमुद्विग्नमनसो हीना देवव्रतेन ते ॥२३॥
23. ajāvaya ivāgopā vane śvāpadasaṁkule ,
bhṛśamudvignamanaso hīnā devavratena te.
23. ajāvayaḥ iva agopāḥ vane śvāpada saṃkule
bhṛśam udvigna manasaḥ hīnāḥ devavratena te
23. te agopāḥ śvāpadasaṃkule vane ajāvayaḥ iva
bhṛśam udvignamanasaḥ devavratena hīnāḥ
23. Like goats and sheep without a shepherd in a forest infested with wild animals, they (the Kauravas), their minds greatly agitated, were devoid of Devavrata (Bhishma).
पतिते भरतश्रेष्ठे बभूव कुरुवाहिनी ।
द्यौरिवापेतनक्षत्रा हीनं खमिव वायुना ॥२४॥
24. patite bharataśreṣṭhe babhūva kuruvāhinī ,
dyaurivāpetanakṣatrā hīnaṁ khamiva vāyunā.
24. patite bharataśreṣṭhe babhūva kuruvāhinī
dyauḥ iva apetanakṣatrā hīnam kham iva vāyunā
24. bharataśreṣṭhe patite kuruvāhinī apetanakṣatrā dyauḥ iva,
vāyunā hīnam kham iva babhūva.
24. When the foremost of the Bharatas (Bhishma) fell, the Kuru army became like a sky without its constellations, or like space deprived of air.
विपन्नसस्येव मही वाक्चैवासंस्कृता यथा ।
आसुरीव यथा सेना निगृहीते पुरा बलौ ॥२५॥
25. vipannasasyeva mahī vākcaivāsaṁskṛtā yathā ,
āsurīva yathā senā nigṛhīte purā balau.
25. vipannasasyā iva mahī vāk ca eva asaṃskṛtā
yathā āsurī iva yathā senā nigṛhīte purā balau
25. mahī vipannasasyā iva,
ca eva asaṃskṛtā vāk yathā,
purā balau nigṛhīte āsurī senā yathā iva.
25. And like an earth whose crops have failed, or like unrefined speech, or like an army of asuras when Bala was captured in ancient times.
विधवेव वरारोहा शुष्कतोयेव निम्नगा ।
वृकैरिव वने रुद्धा पृषती हतयूथपा ॥२६॥
26. vidhaveva varārohā śuṣkatoyeva nimnagā ,
vṛkairiva vane ruddhā pṛṣatī hatayūthapā.
26. vidhavā iva varārohā śuṣkatoyā iva nimnagā
vṛkaiḥ iva vane ruddhā pṛṣatī hatayūthapā
26. varārohā vidhavā iva,
nimnagā śuṣkatoyā iva,
vane vṛkaiḥ iva ruddhā hatayūthapā pṛṣatī.
26. The Kuru army became like a beautiful woman widowed, or like a riverbed with dried-up water, or like a spotted deer whose herd-leader has been killed, restrained by wolves in the forest.
स्वाधर्षा हतसिंहेव महती गिरिकन्दरा ।
भारती भरतश्रेष्ठ पतिते जाह्नवीसुते ॥२७॥
27. svādharṣā hatasiṁheva mahatī girikandarā ,
bhāratī bharataśreṣṭha patite jāhnavīsute.
27. svādharṣā hatasiṃhā iva mahatī girikandarā
bhāratī bharataśreṣṭha patite jāhnavīsute
27. bharataśreṣṭha,
jāhnavīsute patite,
mahatī bhāratī hatasiṃhā iva girikandarā svādharṣā.
27. O foremost of the Bharatas, when the son of Janhavi (Bhishma) fell, the great Bhārata army became like a mighty mountain cave whose protecting lion has been killed, now easily assailable.
विष्वग्वातहता रुग्णा नौरिवासीन्महार्णवे ।
बलिभिः पाण्डवैर्वीरैर्लब्धलक्षैर्भृशार्दिता ॥२८॥
28. viṣvagvātahatā rugṇā naurivāsīnmahārṇave ,
balibhiḥ pāṇḍavairvīrairlabdhalakṣairbhṛśārditā.
28. viṣvaghāta-hatā rugṇā nauḥ iva āsīt mahā-arṇave
balibhiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ vīraiḥ labdha-lakṣaiḥ bhṛśārditā
28. (sā senā) viṣvaghāta-hatā rugṇā nauḥ mahā-arṇave iva
āsīt balibhiḥ vīraiḥ labdha-lakṣaiḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ bhṛśārditā
28. The army was greatly tormented, like a damaged ship struck by winds from all directions in the great ocean, by the strong, heroic Pandavas who had achieved their objective.
सा तदासीद्भृशं सेना व्याकुलाश्वरथद्विपा ।
विषण्णभूयिष्ठनरा कृपणा द्रष्टुमाबभौ ॥२९॥
29. sā tadāsīdbhṛśaṁ senā vyākulāśvarathadvipā ,
viṣaṇṇabhūyiṣṭhanarā kṛpaṇā draṣṭumābabhau.
29. sā tadā āsīt bhṛśam senā vyākula-aśva-ratha-dvipā
viṣaṇṇa-bhūyiṣṭha-narā kṛpaṇā draṣṭum ābabhau
29. sā senā tadā bhṛśam vyākula-aśva-ratha-dvipā
viṣaṇṇa-bhūyiṣṭha-narā kṛpaṇā draṣṭum ābabhau āsīt
29. That army then was greatly agitated, with its horses, chariots, and elephants in disarray, and most of its men dejected. It appeared pitiable to behold.
तस्यां त्रस्ता नृपतयः सैनिकाश्च पृथग्विधाः ।
पाताल इव मज्जन्तो हीना देवव्रतेन ते ।
कर्णं हि कुरवोऽस्मार्षुः स हि देवव्रतोपमः ॥३०॥
30. tasyāṁ trastā nṛpatayaḥ sainikāśca pṛthagvidhāḥ ,
pātāla iva majjanto hīnā devavratena te ,
karṇaṁ hi kuravo'smārṣuḥ sa hi devavratopamaḥ.
30. tasyām trastāḥ nṛpatayaḥ sainikāḥ ca
pṛthagvidhāḥ pātāle iva majjantaḥ
hīnāḥ devavratena te karṇam hi
kuravaḥ asmārṣuḥ saḥ hi devavratopamaḥ
30. tasyām trastāḥ pṛthagvidhāḥ nṛpatayaḥ
ca sainikāḥ pātāle iva majjantaḥ
devavratena hīnāḥ te kuravaḥ hi
karṇam asmārṣuḥ hi saḥ devavratopamaḥ
30. In that army, frightened kings and soldiers of various kinds, sinking as if into the netherworld, and bereft of Devavrata (Bhīṣma), indeed, those Kurus remembered Karṇa, for he was indeed like Devavrata (Bhīṣma).
सर्वशस्त्रभृतां श्रेष्ठं रोचमानमिवातिथिम् ।
बन्धुमापद्गतस्येव तमेवोपागमन्मनः ॥३१॥
31. sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ rocamānamivātithim ,
bandhumāpadgatasyeva tamevopāgamanmanaḥ.
31. sarva-śastra-bhṛtām śreṣṭham rocamānam iva atithim
bandhum āpad-gatasya iva tam eva upāgamat manaḥ
31. manaḥ tam eva upāgamat sarva-śastra-bhṛtām śreṣṭham
rocamānam atithim iva āpad-gatasya bandhum iva
31. Their minds approached him alone, as one would approach the best among all weapon-bearers, appearing like a shining guest, or a kinsman to one fallen into distress.
चुक्रुशुः कर्ण कर्णेति तत्र भारत पार्थिवाः ।
राधेयं हितमस्माकं सूतपुत्रं तनुत्यजम् ॥३२॥
32. cukruśuḥ karṇa karṇeti tatra bhārata pārthivāḥ ,
rādheyaṁ hitamasmākaṁ sūtaputraṁ tanutyajam.
32. cukruśuḥ karṇa karṇa iti tatra bhārata pārthivāḥ
rādheyam hitam asmākam sūtaputram tanutyajam
32. bhārata tatra pārthivāḥ rādheyam asmākam hitam
sūtaputram tanutyajam karṇa karṇa iti cukruśuḥ
32. O Bhārata, the kings there cried out, 'Karṇa! Karṇa!' concerning Radheya, the son of the charioteer, our benefactor, who was giving up his life.
स हि नायुध्यत तदा दशाहानि महायशाः ।
सामात्यबन्धुः कर्णो वै तमाह्वयत माचिरम् ॥३३॥
33. sa hi nāyudhyata tadā daśāhāni mahāyaśāḥ ,
sāmātyabandhuḥ karṇo vai tamāhvayata māciram.
33. sa hi na ayudhyata tadā daśāhāni mahāyaśāḥ
sāmātyabandhuḥ karṇaḥ vai tam āhvayata mā ciram
33. hi mahāyaśāḥ saḥ tadā daśāhāni na ayudhyata
vai sāmātyabandhuḥ karṇaḥ tam mā ciram āhvayata
33. Indeed, that highly renowned one (Karṇa) did not fight then for ten days. Karṇa himself, with his ministers and relatives, indeed urged him (Bhīṣma), 'Do not delay!'
भीष्मेण हि महाबाहुः सर्वक्षत्रस्य पश्यतः ।
रथेषु गण्यमानेषु बलविक्रमशालिषु ।
संख्यातोऽर्धरथः कर्णो द्विगुणः सन्नरर्षभः ॥३४॥
34. bhīṣmeṇa hi mahābāhuḥ sarvakṣatrasya paśyataḥ ,
ratheṣu gaṇyamāneṣu balavikramaśāliṣu ,
saṁkhyāto'rdharathaḥ karṇo dviguṇaḥ sannararṣabhaḥ.
34. bhīṣmeṇa hi mahābāhuḥ sarvakṣatrasya
paśyataḥ ratheṣu gaṇyamāneṣu
balavikramaśāliṣu saṃkhyātaḥ ardharathaḥ
karṇaḥ dviguṇaḥ san nararṣabhaḥ

bhīṣmeṇa mahābāhuḥ karṇaḥ
balavikramaśāliṣu ratheṣu gaṇyamāneṣu
dviguṇaḥ san ardharathaḥ saṃkhyātaḥ
34. Indeed, as all kṣatriyas looked on, the mighty-armed Karṇa was counted by Bhīṣma as an 'Ardharatha' (half-chariot warrior), even though he was twice as formidable among the charioteers who were being ranked for their strength and valor, O best among men.
रथातिरथसंख्यायां योऽग्रणीः शूरसंमतः ।
पितृवित्ताम्बुदेवेशानपि यो योद्धुमुत्सहेत् ॥३५॥
35. rathātirathasaṁkhyāyāṁ yo'graṇīḥ śūrasaṁmataḥ ,
pitṛvittāmbudeveśānapi yo yoddhumutsahet.
35. ratha atiratha saṃkhyāyām yaḥ agraṇīḥ śūrasaṃmataḥ
pitṛ vitta ambudeva īśān api yaḥ yoddhum utsahet
35. yaḥ rathātirathasaṃkhyāyām śūrasaṃmataḥ agraṇīḥ
yaḥ pitṛ vitta ambudeva īśān api yoddhum utsahet
35. He who is the foremost, esteemed by valiant warriors, in the ranking of 'Ratha' (chariot warrior) and 'Atiratha' (great chariot warrior); he who would dare to fight even the ancestral spirits (pitṛs), the god of wealth (Kubera), the god of water (Varuṇa), and the supreme lords (Īśānas).
स तु तेनैव कोपेन राजन्गाङ्गेयमुक्तवान् ।
त्वयि जीवति कौरव्य नाहं योत्स्ये कथंचन ॥३६॥
36. sa tu tenaiva kopena rājangāṅgeyamuktavān ,
tvayi jīvati kauravya nāhaṁ yotsye kathaṁcana.
36. saḥ tu tena eva kopena rājan gāṅgeyam uktavān
tvayi jīvati kauravya na aham yotsye kathaṃcana
36. rājan saḥ tu tena eva kopena gāṅgeyam uktavān
kauravya tvayi jīvati aham kathaṃcana na yotsye
36. But he, O King, spoke to Bhishma (Gāṅgeya) with that very anger: "O scion of Kuru (Kauravya), as long as you are alive, I will not fight at all."
त्वया तु पाण्डवेयेषु निहतेषु महामृधे ।
दुर्योधनमनुज्ञाप्य वनं यास्यामि कौरव ॥३७॥
37. tvayā tu pāṇḍaveyeṣu nihateṣu mahāmṛdhe ,
duryodhanamanujñāpya vanaṁ yāsyāmi kaurava.
37. tvayā tu pāṇḍaveyeṣu nihateṣu mahāmṛdhe
duryodhanam anujñāpya vanam yāsyāmi kaurava
37. kaurava tu tvayā mahāmṛdhe pāṇḍaveyeṣu
nihateṣu duryodhanam anujñāpya vanam yāsyāmi
37. But, O scion of Kuru (Kaurava), after you have slain the Pandavas in the great battle, I will obtain Duryodhana's permission and go to the forest.
पाण्डवैर्वा हते भीष्मे त्वयि स्वर्गमुपेयुषि ।
हन्तास्म्येकरथेनैव कृत्स्नान्यान्मन्यसे रथान् ॥३८॥
38. pāṇḍavairvā hate bhīṣme tvayi svargamupeyuṣi ,
hantāsmyekarathenaiva kṛtsnānyānmanyase rathān.
38. pāṇḍavaiḥ vā hate bhīṣme tvayi svargam upeyuṣi hantā
asmi ekarathena eva kṛtsnān anyān manyase rathān
38. vā bhīṣme pāṇḍavaiḥ hate tvayi svargam upeyuṣi
ekarathena eva kṛtsnān anyān rathān manyase hantā asmi
38. Or, if you, Bhishma, are killed by the Pandavas and have ascended to heaven, then with my single chariot, I will slay all those whom you consider [to be worthy] warriors.
एवमुक्त्वा महाराज दशाहानि महायशाः ।
नायुध्यत ततः कर्णः पुत्रस्य तव संमते ॥३९॥
39. evamuktvā mahārāja daśāhāni mahāyaśāḥ ,
nāyudhyata tataḥ karṇaḥ putrasya tava saṁmate.
39. evam uktvā mahārāja daśa ahāni mahāyaśāḥ na
ayudhyata tataḥ karṇaḥ putrasya tava saṃmate
39. mahārāja evam uktvā,
mahāyaśāḥ karṇaḥ tataḥ putrasya tava saṃmate daśa ahāni na ayudhyata
39. O great king, having spoken thus, the greatly renowned Karna did not fight for ten days thereafter, with your son's (Duryodhana's) consent.
भीष्मः समरविक्रान्तः पाण्डवेयस्य पार्थिव ।
जघान समरे योधानसंख्येयपराक्रमः ॥४०॥
40. bhīṣmaḥ samaravikrāntaḥ pāṇḍaveyasya pārthiva ,
jaghāna samare yodhānasaṁkhyeyaparākramaḥ.
40. bhīṣmaḥ samara-vikrāntaḥ pāṇḍaveyasya pārthiva
jaghāna samare yodhān asaṅkhyeya-parākramaḥ
40. pārthiva bhīṣmaḥ samara-vikrāntaḥ asaṅkhyeya-parākramaḥ

40. O King, Bhishma, mighty in battle and of immeasurable valor, slew the warriors of the Pandavas in combat.
तस्मिंस्तु निहते शूरे सत्यसंधे महौजसि ।
त्वत्सुताः कर्णमस्मार्षुस्तर्तुकामा इव प्लवम् ॥४१॥
41. tasmiṁstu nihate śūre satyasaṁdhe mahaujasi ,
tvatsutāḥ karṇamasmārṣustartukāmā iva plavam.
41. tasmin tu nihate śūre satya-saṃdhe mahā-ojasi
tvat-sutāḥ karṇam asmārṣuḥ tartu-kāmāḥ iva plavam
41. tu tasmin śūre satya-saṃdhe mahā-ojasi nihate
tvat-sutāḥ tartu-kāmāḥ plavam iva karṇam asmārṣuḥ
41. But when that hero, true to his vow and of great energy, was slain, your sons remembered Karna, just as those desiring to cross (a body of water) remember a boat.
तावकास्तव पुत्राश्च सहिताः सर्वराजभिः ।
हा कर्ण इति चाक्रन्दन्कालोऽयमिति चाब्रुवन् ॥४२॥
42. tāvakāstava putrāśca sahitāḥ sarvarājabhiḥ ,
hā karṇa iti cākrandankālo'yamiti cābruvan.
42. tāvakāḥ tava putrāḥ ca sahitāḥ sarva-rāja-bhiḥ hā
karṇa iti ca ākrandan kālaḥ ayam iti ca abruvan
42. tava putrāḥ ca tāvakāḥ sarva-rāja-bhiḥ sahitāḥ hā
karṇa iti ca ākrandan ca ayam kālaḥ iti abruvan
42. Your sons and your men, accompanied by all the kings, cried out, 'Alas, Karna!' and said, 'This is the critical time!'
जामदग्न्याभ्यनुज्ञातमस्त्रे दुर्वारपौरुषम् ।
अगमन्नो मनः कर्णं बन्धुमात्ययिकेष्विव ॥४३॥
43. jāmadagnyābhyanujñātamastre durvārapauruṣam ,
agamanno manaḥ karṇaṁ bandhumātyayikeṣviva.
43. jāmadagnyā abhi-anujñātam astre durvāra-pauruṣam
agaman naḥ manaḥ karṇam bandhum ātyayikeṣu iva
43. naḥ manaḥ astre durvāra-pauruṣam jāmadagnyā
abhi-anujñātam karṇam agaman bandhum ātyayikeṣu iva
43. Our minds turned to Karna, who was sanctioned by Jamadagni's son (Parashurama) in the knowledge of weapons and possessed irresistible might, just as one turns to a kinsman in emergencies.
स हि शक्तो रणे राजंस्त्रातुमस्मान्महाभयात् ।
त्रिदशानिव गोविन्दः सततं सुमहाभयात् ॥४४॥
44. sa hi śakto raṇe rājaṁstrātumasmānmahābhayāt ,
tridaśāniva govindaḥ satataṁ sumahābhayāt.
44. sa hi śaktaḥ raṇe rājan trātum asmān mahābhayāt
tridaśān iva govindaḥ satatam sumahābhayāt
44. rājan sa hi raṇe asmān mahābhayāt trātum śaktaḥ
iva govindaḥ tridaśān satatam sumahābhayāt
44. Indeed, O King, he is capable in battle of protecting us from great fear, just as Govinda (Kṛṣṇa) constantly protects the gods from very great fear.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तथा कर्णं युधि वरं कीर्तयन्तं पुनः पुनः ।
आशीविषवदुच्छ्वस्य धृतराष्ट्रोऽब्रवीदिदम् ॥४५॥
45. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tathā karṇaṁ yudhi varaṁ kīrtayantaṁ punaḥ punaḥ ,
āśīviṣavaducchvasya dhṛtarāṣṭro'bravīdidam.
45. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tathā karṇam yudhi varam kīrtayantam
punaḥ punaḥ āśīviṣavat ucchvasya dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ abravīt idam
45. vaiśaṃpāyanaḥ uvāca tathā yudhi varam karṇam punaḥ punaḥ
kīrtayantam āśīviṣavat ucchvasya dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ idam abravīt
45. Vaiśampāyana said: As (Sañjaya was) thus repeatedly praising Karṇa, the best in battle, Dhṛtarāṣṭra sighed like a venomous snake and spoke this.
यत्तद्वैकर्तनं कर्णमगमद्वो मनस्तदा ।
अप्यपश्यत राधेयं सूतपुत्रं तनुत्यजम् ॥४६॥
46. yattadvaikartanaṁ karṇamagamadvo manastadā ,
apyapaśyata rādheyaṁ sūtaputraṁ tanutyajam.
46. yat tat vaikartanam karṇam agamat vaḥ manaḥ tadā
api apaśyata rādheyam sūtaputram tanutyajam
46. yat tadā vaḥ manaḥ vaikartanam karṇam agamat
api rādheyam sūtaputram tanutyajam apaśyata
46. When your minds were then fixed on Karṇa, the son of Vikartana (Sūrya), did you also see Rādhā's son, the charioteer's son, abandoning his body (dying)?
अपि तन्न मृषाकार्षीद्युधि सत्यपराक्रमः ।
संभ्रान्तानां तदार्तानां त्रस्तानां त्राणमिच्छताम् ॥४७॥
47. api tanna mṛṣākārṣīdyudhi satyaparākramaḥ ,
saṁbhrāntānāṁ tadārtānāṁ trastānāṁ trāṇamicchatām.
47. api tat na mṛṣā akārṣīt yudhi satyaparākramaḥ
saṃbhrāntānām ārtānām trastānām trāṇam icchatām
47. api yudhi satyaparākramaḥ tat na mṛṣā akārṣīt
saṃbhrāntānām ārtānām trastānām trāṇam icchatām
47. Did not that warrior of true valor (Karṇa) in battle make it false (i.e., fail to protect) for those who were bewildered, distressed, frightened, and desiring protection?
अपि तत्पूरयां चक्रे धनुर्धरवरो युधि ।
यत्तद्विनिहते भीष्मे कौरवाणामपावृतम् ॥४८॥
48. api tatpūrayāṁ cakre dhanurdharavaro yudhi ,
yattadvinihate bhīṣme kauravāṇāmapāvṛtam.
48. api tat pūrayām cakre dhanurdhara-varaḥ yudhi
yat tat vinihate bhīṣme kauravāṇām apāvṛtam
48. dhanurdhara-varaḥ api yudhi tat apāvṛtam yat
tat bhīṣme vinihate kauravāṇām pūrayām cakre
48. The best of archers (Karna) also filled that gap in battle which had been opened for the Kauravas when Bhishma was slain.
तत्खण्डं पूरयामास परेषामादधद्भयम् ।
कृतवान्मम पुत्राणां जयाशां सफलामपि ॥४९॥
49. tatkhaṇḍaṁ pūrayāmāsa pareṣāmādadhadbhayam ,
kṛtavānmama putrāṇāṁ jayāśāṁ saphalāmapi.
49. tat khaṇḍam pūrayām āsa pareṣām ādadhat bhayam
kṛtavān mama putrāṇām jayāśām saphalām api
49. tat khaṇḍam pareṣām bhayam ādadhat pūrayām
āsa mama putrāṇām jayāśām api saphalām kṛtavān
49. He (Karna) filled that gap, striking fear into the enemies, and he even made the hope of victory of my (Dhṛtarāṣṭra's) sons successful.
