धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
चक्षुष्मतां वै स्पृहयामि संजय द्रक्ष्यन्ति ये वासुदेवं समीपे ।
विभ्राजमानं वपुषा परेण प्रकाशयन्तं प्रदिशो दिशश्च ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
cakṣuṣmatāṁ vai spṛhayāmi saṁjaya; drakṣyanti ye vāsudevaṁ samīpe ,
vibhrājamānaṁ vapuṣā pareṇa; prakāśayantaṁ pradiśo diśaśca.
1. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca cakṣuṣmatām vai
spṛhayāmi saṃjaya drakṣyanti ye
vāsudevam samīpe vibhrājamānam vapuṣā
pareṇa prakāśayantam pradiśaḥ diśaḥ ca
1. Dhritarashtra said: "O Sanjaya, I truly envy those who possess eyes, as they will see Vasudeva (Krishna) nearby, shining brilliantly with his supreme form, illuminating all the cardinal and intermediate directions."
ईरयन्तं भारतीं भारतानामभ्यर्चनीयां शंकरीं सृञ्जयानाम् ।
बुभूषद्भिर्ग्रहणीयामनिन्द्यां परासूनामग्रहणीयरूपाम् ॥२॥
2. īrayantaṁ bhāratīṁ bhāratānā;mabhyarcanīyāṁ śaṁkarīṁ sṛñjayānām ,
bubhūṣadbhirgrahaṇīyāmanindyāṁ; parāsūnāmagrahaṇīyarūpām.
2. īrayantam bhāratīm bhāratānām
abhyarcanīyām śaṅkarīm sṛñjayānām
bubhūṣadbhiḥ grahaṇīyām
anindyām parāsūnām agrahaṇīyarūpām
2. Him (Kṛṣṇa), who inspires valor (bhāratī)—that valor which is worthy of worship by the Bhāratas and benevolent to the Sṛñjayas; which is to be attained by those desiring prosperity, is irreproachable, and whose form is ungraspable by those whose lives are forfeit.
समुद्यन्तं सात्वतमेकवीरं प्रणेतारमृषभं यादवानाम् ।
निहन्तारं क्षोभणं शात्रवाणां मुष्णन्तं च द्विषतां वै यशांसि ॥३॥
3. samudyantaṁ sātvatamekavīraṁ; praṇetāramṛṣabhaṁ yādavānām ,
nihantāraṁ kṣobhaṇaṁ śātravāṇāṁ; muṣṇantaṁ ca dviṣatāṁ vai yaśāṁsi.
3. samudyantam sātvatam ekavīram
praṇetāram ṛṣabham yādavānām
nihantāram kṣobhaṇam śātravāṇām
muṣṇantam ca dviṣatām vai yaśāṃsi
3. He is the manifest Sātvata, the unparalleled hero, the leader and chief of the Yadavas. He is the destroyer and agitator of foes, and indeed, he steals the glory of his adversaries.
द्रष्टारो हि कुरवस्तं समेता महात्मानं शत्रुहणं वरेण्यम् ।
ब्रुवन्तं वाचमनृशंसरूपां वृष्णिश्रेष्ठं मोहयन्तं मदीयान् ॥४॥
4. draṣṭāro hi kuravastaṁ sametā; mahātmānaṁ śatruhaṇaṁ vareṇyam ,
bruvantaṁ vācamanṛśaṁsarūpāṁ; vṛṣṇiśreṣṭhaṁ mohayantaṁ madīyān.
4. draṣṭāraḥ hi kuravaḥ tam sametāḥ
mahātmānam śatruhaṇam vareṇyam
bruvantam vācam anṛśaṃsarūpām
vṛṣṇiśreṣṭham mohayantam madīyān
4. Indeed, the assembled Kauravas beheld him—the great-souled (mahātman), the slayer of enemies, the most excellent one—uttering benevolent words. This best of the Vṛṣṇis (Kṛṣṇa) was bewildering my (Dhṛtarāṣṭra's) men.
ऋषिं सनातनतमं विपश्चितं वाचः समुद्रं कलशं यतीनाम् ।
अरिष्टनेमिं गरुडं सुपर्णं पतिं प्रजानां भुवनस्य धाम ॥५॥
5. ṛṣiṁ sanātanatamaṁ vipaścitaṁ; vācaḥ samudraṁ kalaśaṁ yatīnām ,
ariṣṭanemiṁ garuḍaṁ suparṇaṁ; patiṁ prajānāṁ bhuvanasya dhāma.
5. ṛṣim sanātanatamam vipaścitam
vācaḥ samudram kalaśam yatīnām
ariṣṭanemim garuḍam suparṇam
patim prajānām bhuvanasya dhāma
5. He is the most ancient sage (ṛṣi), the omniscient one, the ocean of knowledge, and the very vessel for ascetics (yatī). He is the one with an unimpeded wheel, he is Garuḍa, the beautiful-winged one, the lord of creatures (prajā), and the abode (dhāma) of the universe.
सहस्रशीर्षं पुरुषं पुराणमनादिमध्यान्तमनन्तकीर्तिम् ।
शुक्रस्य धातारमजं जनित्रं परं परेभ्यः शरणं प्रपद्ये ॥६॥
6. sahasraśīrṣaṁ puruṣaṁ purāṇa;manādimadhyāntamanantakīrtim ,
śukrasya dhātāramajaṁ janitraṁ; paraṁ parebhyaḥ śaraṇaṁ prapadye.
6. sahasraśīrṣam puruṣam purāṇam
anādimadhyāntam anantakīrtim
śukrasya dhātāram ajam janitram
param parebhyaḥ śaraṇam prapadye
6. I take refuge in that supreme cosmic person (puruṣa) who has a thousand heads, is ancient, without beginning, middle, or end, of infinite fame, the creator of the semen (or prosperity), unborn, the progenitor, and superior to all others.
त्रैलोक्यनिर्माणकरं जनित्रं देवासुराणामथ नागरक्षसाम् ।
नराधिपानां विदुषां प्रधानमिन्द्रानुजं तं शरणं प्रपद्ये ॥७॥
7. trailokyanirmāṇakaraṁ janitraṁ; devāsurāṇāmatha nāgarakṣasām ,
narādhipānāṁ viduṣāṁ pradhāna;mindrānujaṁ taṁ śaraṇaṁ prapadye.
7. trailokyanirmāṇakaram janitram
devāsurāṇām atha nāgarakṣasām
narādhipānām viduṣām pradhānam
indrānujam tam śaraṇam prapadye
7. I take refuge in that younger brother of Indra, who is the creator of the three worlds, the progenitor of gods, asuras, nāgas, and rākṣasas, and the chief among kings and the wise.
