1. Bhīṣma said: Then, Nārada, the divine sage and friend of Nārāyaṇa, narrated the conversation of Śaṅkara with Umā.
तपश्चचार धर्मात्मा वृषभाङ्कः सुरेश्वरः ।
पुण्ये गिरौ हिमवति सिद्धचारणसेविते ॥२॥
2. tapaścacāra dharmātmā vṛṣabhāṅkaḥ sureśvaraḥ ,
puṇye girau himavati siddhacāraṇasevite.

2. The righteous-souled Lord of gods, whose banner bears a bull (Śiva), performed severe austerities (tapas) on the sacred mountain Himavat, which is frequented by Siddhas and Cāraṇas.
नानौषधियुते रम्ये नानापुष्पसमाकुले ।
अप्सरोगणसंकीर्णे भूतसंघनिषेविते ॥३॥
3. nānauṣadhiyute ramye nānāpuṣpasamākule ,
apsarogaṇasaṁkīrṇe bhūtasaṁghaniṣevite.

3. (The mountain was) charming, rich in various herbs, covered with diverse flowers, thronged by groups of Apsarases, and resorted to by hosts of spirits (bhūtas).
तत्र देवो मुदा युक्तो भूतसंघशतैर्वृतः ।
नानारूपैर्विरूपैश्च दिव्यैरद्भुतदर्शनैः ॥४॥
4. tatra devo mudā yukto bhūtasaṁghaśatairvṛtaḥ ,
nānārūpairvirūpaiśca divyairadbhutadarśanaiḥ.

4. There, the god (Śiva), filled with joy and surrounded by hundreds of hosts of spirits (bhūtas) - some with various forms, some deformed, some divine, and some of wondrous appearance.
सिंहव्याघ्रगजप्रख्यैः सर्वजातिसमन्वितैः ।
क्रोष्टुकद्वीपिवदनैरृक्षर्षभमुखैस्तथा ॥५॥
5. siṁhavyāghragajaprakhyaiḥ sarvajātisamanvitaiḥ ,
kroṣṭukadvīpivadanairṛkṣarṣabhamukhaistathā.

5. With beings resembling lions, tigers, and elephants, endowed with characteristics of all species, having faces like jackals and leopards, and similarly, faces like bears and bulls.
उलूकवदनैर्भीमैः श्येनभासमुखैस्तथा ।
नानावर्णमृगप्रख्यैः सर्वजातिसमन्वयैः ।
किंनरैर्देवगन्धर्वैर्यक्षभूतगणैस्तथा ॥६॥
6. ulūkavadanairbhīmaiḥ śyenabhāsamukhaistathā ,
nānāvarṇamṛgaprakhyaiḥ sarvajātisamanvayaiḥ ,
kiṁnarairdevagandharvairyakṣabhūtagaṇaistathā.

devagandharvaiḥ yakṣabhūtagaṇaiḥ tathā
6. With formidable owl-faced beings, and those with faces like hawks and vultures, resembling deer of various colors, comprising all kinds of species; also with kiṃnaras, divine gandharvas, and hosts of yakṣas and spirit-beings (bhūta), and so on.
दिव्यपुष्पसमाकीर्णं दिव्यमालाविभूषितम् ।
दिव्यचन्दनसंयुक्तं दिव्यधूपेन धूपितम् ।
तत्सदो वृषभाङ्कस्य दिव्यवादित्रनादितम् ॥७॥
7. divyapuṣpasamākīrṇaṁ divyamālāvibhūṣitam ,
divyacandanasaṁyuktaṁ divyadhūpena dhūpitam ,
tatsado vṛṣabhāṅkasya divyavāditranāditam.

7. That assembly hall of the one marked by a bull (Śiva) was filled with divine flowers, adorned with divine garlands, endowed with divine sandalwood, perfumed with divine incense, and resounded by divine musical instruments.
मृदङ्गपणवोद्घुष्टं शङ्खभेरीनिनादितम् ।
नृत्यद्भिर्भूतसंघैश्च बर्हिणैश्च समन्ततः ॥८॥
8. mṛdaṅgapaṇavodghuṣṭaṁ śaṅkhabherīnināditam ,
nṛtyadbhirbhūtasaṁghaiśca barhiṇaiśca samantataḥ.

8. It was loudly resounded by mṛdaṅgas and paṇavas, reverberated by conches and kettledrums, and by dancing hosts of spirit-beings (bhūta) and peacocks all around.
प्रनृत्ताप्सरसं दिव्यं दिव्यस्त्रीगणसेवितम् ।
दृष्टिकान्तमनिर्देश्यं दिव्यमद्भुतदर्शनम् ॥९॥
9. pranṛttāpsarasaṁ divyaṁ divyastrīgaṇasevitam ,
dṛṣṭikāntamanirdeśyaṁ divyamadbhutadarśanam.

9. Divine, with dancing celestial nymphs (apsarases), attended by groups of divine women, beautiful to behold, indescribable, divine, and of wondrous appearance.
स गिरिस्तपसा तस्य
भूतेशस्य व्यरोचत ॥१०॥

10. That mountain shone splendidly due to Bhūteśa's ascetic practice (tapas).
स्वाध्यायपरमैर्विप्रैर्ब्रह्मघोषैर्विनादितः ।
षट्पदैरुपगीतैश्च माधवाप्रतिमो गिरिः ॥११॥
11. svādhyāyaparamairviprairbrahmaghoṣairvināditaḥ ,
ṣaṭpadairupagītaiśca mādhavāpratimo giriḥ.
11. svādhyāyaparamaiḥ vipraiḥ brahmaghoṣaiḥ vināditaḥ
ṣaṭpadaiḥ upagītaiḥ ca mādhava apratimaḥ giriḥ

11. The mountain, made resonant by the sacred chants (brahmaghoṣa) of Brahmins supremely devoted to Vedic study (svādhyāya) and by the humming of bees, was unequaled, even by Mādhava.
तं महोत्सवसंकाशं भीमरूपधरं पुनः ।
दृष्ट्वा मुनिगणस्यासीत्परा प्रीतिर्जनार्दन ॥१२॥
12. taṁ mahotsavasaṁkāśaṁ bhīmarūpadharaṁ punaḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā munigaṇasyāsītparā prītirjanārdana.
12. tam mahotsavasaṃkāśam bhīmarūpadharam punaḥ
dṛṣṭvā munigaṇasya āsīt parā prītiḥ janārdana
12. janārdana! tam mahotsavasaṃkāśam bhīmarūpadharam
punaḥ dṛṣṭvā munigaṇasya parā prītiḥ āsīt
12. O Janārdana, having seen him who was splendid like a great festival and bore a terrifying form, the group of sages (munis) experienced supreme delight.
मुनयश्च महाभागाः सिद्धाश्चैवोर्ध्वरेतसः ।
मरुतो वसवः साध्या विश्वेदेवाः सनातनाः ॥१३॥
13. munayaśca mahābhāgāḥ siddhāścaivordhvaretasaḥ ,
maruto vasavaḥ sādhyā viśvedevāḥ sanātanāḥ.
13. munayaḥ ca mahābhāgāḥ siddhāḥ ca eva ūrdhvaretasaḥ
marutaḥ vasavaḥ sādhyāḥ viśvedevāḥ sanātanāḥ

13. And the highly revered sages (muni), as well as the perfected beings (siddha) who practice celibacy, along with the Maruts, Vasus, Sadhyas, and the eternal Viśvedevas.
यक्षा नागाः पिशाचाश्च लोकपाला हुताशनाः ।
भावाश्च सर्वे न्यग्भूतास्तत्रैवासन्समागताः ॥१४॥
14. yakṣā nāgāḥ piśācāśca lokapālā hutāśanāḥ ,
bhāvāśca sarve nyagbhūtāstatraivāsansamāgatāḥ.
14. yakṣāḥ nāgāḥ piśācāḥ ca lokapālāḥ hutāśanāḥ bhāvāḥ
ca sarve nyagbhūtāḥ tatra eva āsan samāgatāḥ

14. The Yakshas, Nagas, and Pishachas, along with the guardians of the worlds and the fire deities, and indeed all other beings, were present there, having become subordinate and assembled.
ऋतवः सर्वपुष्पैश्च व्यकिरन्त महाद्भुतैः ।
ओषध्यो ज्वलमानाश्च द्योतयन्ति स्म तद्वनम् ॥१५॥
15. ṛtavaḥ sarvapuṣpaiśca vyakiranta mahādbhutaiḥ ,
oṣadhyo jvalamānāśca dyotayanti sma tadvanam.
15. ṛtavaḥ sarvapuṣpaiḥ ca vyakiranta mahādbhutaiḥ
oṣadhyaḥ jvalamānāḥ ca dyotayanti sma tat vanam
15. ṛtavaḥ ca sarvapuṣpaiḥ mahādbhutaiḥ vyakiranta
ca jvalamānāḥ oṣadhyaḥ tat vanam sma dyotayanti
15. The seasons scattered all kinds of wonderfully magnificent flowers, and the shining herbs illuminated that forest.
विहगाश्च मुदा युक्ताः प्रानृत्यन्व्यनदंश्च ह ।
गिरिपृष्ठेषु रम्येषु व्याहरन्तो जनप्रियाः ॥१६॥
16. vihagāśca mudā yuktāḥ prānṛtyanvyanadaṁśca ha ,
giripṛṣṭheṣu ramyeṣu vyāharanto janapriyāḥ.
16. vihagāḥ ca mudā yuktāḥ prānṛtyan vyanadan ca
ha giripṛṣṭheṣu ramyeṣu vyāharantaḥ janapriyāḥ
16. ca mudā yuktāḥ vihagāḥ prānṛtyan ca vyanadan
ha janapriyāḥ ramyeṣu giripṛṣṭheṣu vyāharantaḥ
16. And the birds, filled with joy, danced and sang, indeed, chirping on the delightful mountain peaks, beloved by all people.
तत्र देवो गिरितटे दिव्यधातुविभूषिते ।
पर्यङ्क इव विभ्राजन्नुपविष्टो महामनाः ॥१७॥
17. tatra devo giritaṭe divyadhātuvibhūṣite ,
paryaṅka iva vibhrājannupaviṣṭo mahāmanāḥ.

paryaṅkaḥ iva vibhrājan upaviṣṭaḥ mahāmanāḥ

17. There, on the mountain slope adorned with divine minerals, the great-souled deity was seated, shining as if on a couch.
व्याघ्रचर्माम्बरधरः सिंहचर्मोत्तरच्छदः ।
व्यालयज्ञोपवीती च लोहिताङ्गदभूषणः ॥१८॥
18. vyāghracarmāmbaradharaḥ siṁhacarmottaracchadaḥ ,
vyālayajñopavītī ca lohitāṅgadabhūṣaṇaḥ.

vyālayajñopavītī ca lohitāṅgadabhūṣaṇaḥ

18. He wore a tiger skin as his garment and a lion skin as his upper covering, had serpents as his sacred thread (yajñopavīta), and was adorned with red armlets.
हरिश्मश्रुर्जटी भीमो भयकर्ता सुरद्विषाम् ।
अभयः सर्वभूतानां भक्तानां वृषभध्वजः ॥१९॥
19. hariśmaśrurjaṭī bhīmo bhayakartā suradviṣām ,
abhayaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ bhaktānāṁ vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ.
19. hariśmaśruḥ jaṭī bhīmaḥ bhayakartā suradviṣām
abhayaḥ sarvabhūtānām bhaktānām vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ

19. He was formidable, with a tawny beard and matted hair, the one who causes fear to the enemies of the gods, the giver of fearlessness to all beings and devotees, and the one whose emblem is a bull (vṛṣabhadhvaja).
दृष्ट्वा तमृषयः सर्वे शिरोभिरवनीं गताः ।
विमुक्ताः सर्वपापेभ्यः क्षान्ता विगतकल्मषाः ॥२०॥
20. dṛṣṭvā tamṛṣayaḥ sarve śirobhiravanīṁ gatāḥ ,
vimuktāḥ sarvapāpebhyaḥ kṣāntā vigatakalmaṣāḥ.
20. dṛṣṭvā tam ṛṣayaḥ sarve śirobhiḥ avanīm gatāḥ
vimuktāḥ sarvapāpebhyaḥ kṣāntāḥ vigatakalmaṣāḥ

20. Having seen him, all the sages bowed their heads to the ground, freed from all sins, purified, and with their impurities removed.
तस्य भूतपतेः स्थानं भीमरूपधरं बभौ ।
अप्रधृष्यतरं चैव महोरगसमाकुलम् ॥२१॥
21. tasya bhūtapateḥ sthānaṁ bhīmarūpadharaṁ babhau ,
apradhṛṣyataraṁ caiva mahoragasamākulam.

apradhṛṣyataram ca eva mahoragasamākulam

21. The abode of that lord of beings appeared terrifying in form, very difficult to approach, and filled with great serpents.
क्षणेनैवाभवत्सर्वमद्भुतं मधुसूदन ।
तत्सदो वृषभाङ्कस्य भीमरूपधरं बभौ ॥२२॥
22. kṣaṇenaivābhavatsarvamadbhutaṁ madhusūdana ,
tatsado vṛṣabhāṅkasya bhīmarūpadharaṁ babhau.
22. kṣaṇena eva abhavat sarvam adbhutam madhusūdana
tat sadas vṛṣabhāṅkasya bhīmarūpadharam babhau
22. madhusūdana kṣaṇena eva sarvam adbhutam abhavat
tat sadas vṛṣabhāṅkasya bhīmarūpadharam babhau
22. O Madhusūdana, in a moment everything became truly wondrous. That assembly hall of the one marked by a bull (Śiva) appeared, assuming a terrifying form.
तमभ्ययाच्छैलसुता भूतस्त्रीगणसंवृता ।
हरतुल्याम्बरधरा समानव्रतचारिणी ॥२३॥
23. tamabhyayācchailasutā bhūtastrīgaṇasaṁvṛtā ,
haratulyāmbaradharā samānavratacāriṇī.

haratulyāmbaradharā samānavratacāriṇī

23. The mountain's daughter (Pārvatī) approached him, surrounded by a multitude of female spirits, dressed in garments like those of Hara (Śiva), and observing similar ascetic vows (vrata).
बिभ्रती कलशं रौक्मं सर्वतीर्थजलोद्भवम् ।
गिरिस्रवाभिः पुण्याभिः सर्वतोऽनुगता शुभा ॥२४॥
24. bibhratī kalaśaṁ raukmaṁ sarvatīrthajalodbhavam ,
girisravābhiḥ puṇyābhiḥ sarvato'nugatā śubhā.

girisravābhiḥ puṇyābhiḥ sarvataḥ anugatā śubhā

24. Bearing a golden pitcher containing waters originating from all sacred bathing places (tīrtha), she, the auspicious one, was followed from all sides by pure mountain streams.
पुष्पवृष्ट्याभिवर्षन्ती गन्धैर्बहुविधैस्तथा ।
सेवन्ती हिमवत्पार्श्वं हरपार्श्वमुपागमत् ॥२५॥
25. puṣpavṛṣṭyābhivarṣantī gandhairbahuvidhaistathā ,
sevantī himavatpārśvaṁ harapārśvamupāgamat.
25. puṣpavṛṣṭyā abhivarṣantī gandhaiḥ bahuvidhaiḥ
tathā sevantī himavatpārśvam harapārśvam upāgamat

25. Showering forth a rain of flowers, accompanied by diverse fragrances, and having frequented the slopes of the Himalayas, she approached Śiva's side.
ततः स्मयन्ती पाणिभ्यां नर्मार्थं चारुदर्शना ।
हरनेत्रे शुभे देवी सहसा सा समावृणोत् ॥२६॥
26. tataḥ smayantī pāṇibhyāṁ narmārthaṁ cārudarśanā ,
haranetre śubhe devī sahasā sā samāvṛṇot.

26. Then, smiling, the beautiful Goddess, for sport, suddenly covered Śiva's (hara) two auspicious eyes with her hands.
संवृताभ्यां तु नेत्राभ्यां तमोभूतमचेतनम् ।
निर्होमं निर्वषट्कारं तत्सदः सहसाभवत् ॥२७॥
27. saṁvṛtābhyāṁ tu netrābhyāṁ tamobhūtamacetanam ,
nirhomaṁ nirvaṣaṭkāraṁ tatsadaḥ sahasābhavat.
27. saṃvṛtābhyām tu netrābhyām tamobhūtam acetanam
nirhomam nirvaṣaṭkāram tat sadaḥ sahasā abhavat
27. tu saṃvṛtābhyām netrābhyām tat sadaḥ sahasā

27. But with (Śiva's) two eyes covered, that assembly suddenly became enveloped in darkness and senseless, devoid of both Vedic fire rituals (homa) and the vaṣaṭ-call.
जनश्च विमनाः सर्वो भयत्राससमन्वितः ।
निमीलिते भूतपतौ नष्टसूर्य इवाभवत् ॥२८॥
28. janaśca vimanāḥ sarvo bhayatrāsasamanvitaḥ ,
nimīlite bhūtapatau naṣṭasūrya ivābhavat.

nimīlite bhūtapatau naṣṭasūryaḥ iva abhavat

28. And all the people became disheartened, filled with fear and dread, just as if the sun had vanished, when the lord of beings (Śiva's) eyes were closed.
ततो वितिमिरो लोकः क्षणेन समपद्यत ।
ज्वाला च महती दीप्ता ललाटात्तस्य निःसृता ॥२९॥
29. tato vitimiro lokaḥ kṣaṇena samapadyata ,
jvālā ca mahatī dīptā lalāṭāttasya niḥsṛtā.

29. Then the world became free of darkness in an instant. And a huge, blazing flame emerged from his forehead.
तृतीयं चास्य संभूतं नेत्रमादित्यसंनिभम् ।
युगान्तसदृशं दीप्तं येनासौ मथितो गिरिः ॥३०॥
30. tṛtīyaṁ cāsya saṁbhūtaṁ netramādityasaṁnibham ,
yugāntasadṛśaṁ dīptaṁ yenāsau mathito giriḥ.
30. tṛtīyam ca asya saṃbhūtam netram ādityasaṃnibham
yugāntasadṛśam dīptam yena asau mathitaḥ giriḥ
30. ca asya tṛtīyam ādityasaṃnibham yugāntasadṛśam
dīptam netram saṃbhūtam yena asau giriḥ mathitaḥ
30. And his third eye, resembling the sun, blazing like the dissolution of an age (yugānta), appeared. By it, that mountain was churned.
ततो गिरिसुता दृष्ट्वा दीप्ताग्निसदृशेक्षणम् ।
हरं प्रणम्य शिरसा ददर्शायतलोचना ॥३१॥
31. tato girisutā dṛṣṭvā dīptāgnisadṛśekṣaṇam ,
haraṁ praṇamya śirasā dadarśāyatalocanā.

31. Then, the long-eyed daughter of the mountain (Girisutā), having seen Hara (Śiva) whose gaze resembled a blazing fire, bowed her head and looked.
दह्यमाने वने तस्मिन्सशालसरलद्रुमे ।
सचन्दनवने रम्ये दिव्यौषधिविदीपिते ॥३२॥

sacandanavane ramye divyauṣadhividīpite.

32. In that burning forest (vana), which was rich with śāla and sarala trees, beautiful with sandalwood trees, and illuminated by divine herbs.
मृगयूथैर्द्रुतैर्भीतैर्हरपार्श्वमुपागतैः ।
शरणं चाप्यविन्दद्भिस्तत्सदः संकुलं बभौ ॥३३॥
33. mṛgayūthairdrutairbhītairharapārśvamupāgataiḥ ,
śaraṇaṁ cāpyavindadbhistatsadaḥ saṁkulaṁ babhau.
33. mṛgayūthaiḥ drutaiḥ bhītaiḥ harapārśvam upāgataiḥ
śaraṇam ca api avindadbhiḥ tat sadaḥ saṃkulam babhau

upāgataiḥ ca api śaraṇam avindadbhiḥ saṃkulam babhau
33. That assembly hall appeared crowded with herds of deer that, fleeing in terror, had approached Śiva's side, yet could not find refuge.
ततो नभःस्पृशज्वालो विद्युल्लोलार्चिरुज्ज्वलः ।
द्वादशादित्यसदृशो युगान्ताग्निरिवापरः ॥३४॥
34. tato nabhaḥspṛśajvālo vidyullolārcirujjvalaḥ ,
dvādaśādityasadṛśo yugāntāgnirivāparaḥ.
34. tataḥ nabhaḥspṛśat jvālaḥ vidyullolārciḥ ujjvalaḥ
dvādaśādityasadṛśaḥ yugāntāgniḥ iva aparaḥ

34. Then, it blazed, with flames touching the sky, brilliant with rays flickering like lightning, resembling the twelve suns, like another fire of the cosmic dissolution (yugāntāgni).
क्षणेन तेन दग्धः स हिमवानभवन्नगः ।
सधातुशिखराभोगो दीनदग्धवनौषधिः ॥३५॥
35. kṣaṇena tena dagdhaḥ sa himavānabhavannagaḥ ,
sadhātuśikharābhogo dīnadagdhavanauṣadhiḥ.

35. In a moment, that mountain (naga) Himavat was consumed by that (fire), its vast mineral-laden peaks and its forests and herbs sadly burnt.
तं दृष्ट्वा मथितं शैलं शैलराजसुता ततः ।
भगवन्तं प्रपन्ना सा साञ्जलिप्रग्रहा स्थिता ॥३६॥
36. taṁ dṛṣṭvā mathitaṁ śailaṁ śailarājasutā tataḥ ,
bhagavantaṁ prapannā sā sāñjalipragrahā sthitā.

bhagavantam prapannā sā sāñjalipragrahā sthitā

36. Seeing that mountain (śaila) shattered, the daughter of the mountain king (Śailarājasutā) then approached the venerable (bhagavan) one, standing with folded hands.
उमां शर्वस्तदा दृष्ट्वा स्त्रीभावागतमार्दवाम् ।
पितुर्दैन्यमनिच्छन्तीं प्रीत्यापश्यत्ततो गिरिम् ॥३७॥
37. umāṁ śarvastadā dṛṣṭvā strībhāvāgatamārdavām ,
piturdainyamanicchantīṁ prītyāpaśyattato girim.
37. umāṃ śarvaḥ tadā dṛṣṭvā strībhāvāgatamārdavām pituḥ
dainyam anicchantīṃ prītyā apaśyat tataḥ girim

37. Then, Śarva, seeing Umā who had become gentle with feminine grace and who did not desire her father's humiliation, looked at the mountain with affection.
ततोऽभवत्पुनः सर्वः प्रकृतिस्थः सुदर्शनः ।
प्रहृष्टविहगश्चैव प्रपुष्पितवनद्रुमः ॥३८॥
38. tato'bhavatpunaḥ sarvaḥ prakṛtisthaḥ sudarśanaḥ ,
prahṛṣṭavihagaścaiva prapuṣpitavanadrumaḥ.
38. tataḥ abhavat punaḥ sarvaḥ prakṛtisthaḥ sudarśanaḥ
prahṛṣṭavihagaḥ ca eva prapuṣpitavanadrumaḥ
38. tataḥ punaḥ sarvaḥ prakṛtisthaḥ sudarśanaḥ
prahṛṣṭavihagaḥ ca eva prapuṣpitavanadrumaḥ abhavat
38. Then, everything returned to its natural state (prakṛti), beautiful to behold, with birds joyful and forest trees blossoming.
प्रकृतिस्थं गिरिं दृष्ट्वा प्रीता देवी महेश्वरम् ।
उवाच सर्वभूतानां पतिं पतिमनिन्दिता ॥३९॥
39. prakṛtisthaṁ giriṁ dṛṣṭvā prītā devī maheśvaram ,
uvāca sarvabhūtānāṁ patiṁ patimaninditā.

uvāca sarvabhūtānām patim patim aninditā

39. Seeing the mountain restored to its natural state (prakṛti), the delighted goddess, blameless (Pārvatī), spoke to Maheśvara, her husband and the lord of all beings.
भगवन्सर्वभूतेश शूलपाणे महाव्रत ।
संशयो मे महाञ्जातस्तं मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥४०॥
40. bhagavansarvabhūteśa śūlapāṇe mahāvrata ,
saṁśayo me mahāñjātastaṁ me vyākhyātumarhasi.

saṃśayaḥ me mahān jātaḥ tam me vyākhyātum arhasi
40. bhagavan sarvabhūteśa śūlapāṇe mahāvrata me

40. O Lord (bhagavan), Lord of all beings, bearer of the trident, observer of a great vow! A great doubt has arisen in me; you ought to explain that to me.
किमर्थं ते ललाटे वै तृतीयं नेत्रमुत्थितम् ।
किमर्थं च गिरिर्दग्धः सपक्षिगणकाननः ॥४१॥
41. kimarthaṁ te lalāṭe vai tṛtīyaṁ netramutthitam ,
kimarthaṁ ca girirdagdhaḥ sapakṣigaṇakānanaḥ.
41. kimartham te lalāṭe vai tṛtīyam netram utthitam
kimartham ca giriḥ dagdhaḥ sapakṣigaṇakānanaḥ
41. kimartham te lalāṭe vai tṛtīyam netram utthitam
ca kimartham sapakṣigaṇakānanaḥ giriḥ dagdhaḥ
41. Why did a third eye appear on your forehead? And why was the mountain, along with its flocks of birds and forests, incinerated?
किमर्थं च पुनर्देव प्रकृतिस्थः क्षणात्कृतः ।
तथैव द्रुमसंछन्नः कृतोऽयं ते महेश्वर ॥४२॥
42. kimarthaṁ ca punardeva prakṛtisthaḥ kṣaṇātkṛtaḥ ,
tathaiva drumasaṁchannaḥ kṛto'yaṁ te maheśvara.
42. kimartham ca punar deva prakṛtisthaḥ kṣaṇāt kṛtaḥ
tathā eva drumasamchannaḥ kṛtaḥ ayam te maheśvara
42. ca kimartham deva punar prakṛtisthaḥ kṣaṇāt kṛtaḥ ca
tathā eva maheśvara te ayam drumasamchannaḥ kṛtaḥ
42. And why, O god, were you instantly restored to your original nature (prakṛti)? And similarly, O great lord (Maheśvara), why was this (mountain) made covered with trees again by you?
महेश्वर उवाच ।
नेत्रे मे संवृते देवि त्वया बाल्यादनिन्दिते ।
नष्टालोकस्ततो लोकः क्षणेन समपद्यत ॥४३॥
43. maheśvara uvāca ,
netre me saṁvṛte devi tvayā bālyādanindite ,
naṣṭālokastato lokaḥ kṣaṇena samapadyata.

anindite naṣṭālokaḥ tataḥ lokaḥ kṣaṇena samapadyata

43. Maheśvara said: 'O blameless goddess, my two eyes were covered by you out of childishness. Consequently, the world immediately became devoid of light.'
नष्टादित्ये तथा लोके तमोभूते नगात्मजे ।
तृतीयं लोचनं दीप्तं सृष्टं ते रक्षता प्रजाः ॥४४॥
44. naṣṭāditye tathā loke tamobhūte nagātmaje ,
tṛtīyaṁ locanaṁ dīptaṁ sṛṣṭaṁ te rakṣatā prajāḥ.
44. naṣṭāditye tathā loke tamobhūte nagātmaje
tṛtīyam locanam dīptam sṛṣṭam te rakṣatā prajāḥ

44. When the sun was lost and the world had thus become dark, O daughter of the mountain, a radiant third eye was created by you for protecting the creatures (prajāḥ).
तस्य चाक्ष्णो महत्तेजो येनायं मथितो गिरिः ।
त्वत्प्रियार्थं च मे देवि प्रकृतिस्थः क्षणात्कृतः ॥४५॥
45. tasya cākṣṇo mahattejo yenāyaṁ mathito giriḥ ,
tvatpriyārthaṁ ca me devi prakṛtisthaḥ kṣaṇātkṛtaḥ.
45. tasya ca akṣṇaḥ mahat tejaḥ yena ayam mathitaḥ giriḥ |
tvat-priyārtham ca me devi prakṛti-sthaḥ kṣaṇāt kṛtaḥ
45. devi tasya akṣṇaḥ ca mahat tejaḥ yena ayam giriḥ mathitaḥ
tvat-priyārtham ca me kṣaṇāt prakṛti-sthaḥ kṛtaḥ
45. O Goddess, from his eye emanated a great radiance, by which this mountain was churned. And for your pleasure, he was instantly restored to his natural state (prakṛtistha).
उमोवाच ।
भगवन्केन ते वक्त्रं चन्द्रवत्प्रियदर्शनम् ।
पूर्वं तथैव श्रीकान्तमुत्तरं पश्चिमं तथा ॥४६॥
46. umovāca ,
bhagavankena te vaktraṁ candravatpriyadarśanam ,
pūrvaṁ tathaiva śrīkāntamuttaraṁ paścimaṁ tathā.
46. umā uvāca | bhagavan kena te vaktram candra-vat priya-darśanam
| pūrvam tathā eva śrī-kāntam uttaram paścimam tathā
46. umā uvāca bhagavan kena te vaktram candra-vat priya-darśanam
tathā eva pūrvam śrī-kāntam uttaram paścimam tathā
46. Umā spoke: 'O revered one, by what means is your face as pleasing to behold as the moon? And how, similarly, are your eastern, northern, and western faces so glorious?'
दक्षिणं च मुखं रौद्रं केनोर्ध्वं कपिला जटाः ।
केन कण्ठश्च ते नीलो बर्हिबर्हनिभः कृतः ॥४७॥
47. dakṣiṇaṁ ca mukhaṁ raudraṁ kenordhvaṁ kapilā jaṭāḥ ,
kena kaṇṭhaśca te nīlo barhibarhanibhaḥ kṛtaḥ.
47. dakṣiṇam ca mukham raudram kena ūrdhvam kapilāḥ jaṭāḥ
| kena kaṇṭhaḥ ca te nīlaḥ barhi-barha-nibhaḥ kṛtaḥ
47. kena dakṣiṇam mukham ca raudram kena te ūrdhvam kapilāḥ
jaṭāḥ kena ca te kaṇṭhaḥ barhi-barha-nibhaḥ nīlaḥ kṛtaḥ
47. And by what means is your southern face fierce? By what means are your tawny matted locks, standing upright? And by what means is your neck made blue, resembling a peacock's feather?
हस्ते चैतत्पिनाकं ते सततं केन तिष्ठति ।
जटिलो ब्रह्मचारी च किमर्थमसि नित्यदा ॥४८॥
48. haste caitatpinākaṁ te satataṁ kena tiṣṭhati ,
jaṭilo brahmacārī ca kimarthamasi nityadā.
48. haste ca etat pinākam te satatam kena tiṣṭhati
| jaṭilaḥ brahmacārī ca kim-artham asi nityadā
48. kena ca etat pinākam te haste satatam tiṣṭhati
kim-artham ca nityadā jaṭilaḥ brahmacārī asi
48. And by what means does this Pināka bow constantly remain in your hand? And for what reason are you always a matted-haired celibate (brahmacārī)?
एतं मे संशयं सर्वं वद भूतपतेऽनघ ।
सधर्मचारिणी चाहं भक्ता चेति वृषध्वज ॥४९॥
49. etaṁ me saṁśayaṁ sarvaṁ vada bhūtapate'nagha ,
sadharmacāriṇī cāhaṁ bhaktā ceti vṛṣadhvaja.
49. etam me saṃśayam sarvam vada bhūtapate anagha
sadharmacāriṇī ca aham bhaktā ca iti vṛṣadhvaja
49. O sinless Lord of beings (bhūtapati), O Bull-bannered one (vṛṣadhvaja), please resolve this entire doubt for me. For I am your devoted consort and a co-performer of your duties (dharma).
एवमुक्तः स भगवाञ्शैलपुत्र्या पिनाकधृक् ।
तस्या वृत्त्या च बुद्ध्या च प्रीतिमानभवत्प्रभुः ॥५०॥
50. evamuktaḥ sa bhagavāñśailaputryā pinākadhṛk ,
tasyā vṛttyā ca buddhyā ca prītimānabhavatprabhuḥ.
50. evam uktaḥ saḥ bhagavān śailaputryā pinākadhṛk
tasyāḥ vṛttyā ca buddhyā ca prītimān abhavat prabhuḥ
50. Thus addressed by the daughter of the mountain (śailaputrī), the revered Lord, wielder of the Pinaka bow (pinākadhṛk), became pleased by her demeanor and intelligence.
ततस्तामब्रवीद्देवः सुभगे श्रूयतामिति ।
हेतुभिर्यैर्ममैतानि रूपाणि रुचिरानने ॥५१॥
51. tatastāmabravīddevaḥ subhage śrūyatāmiti ,
hetubhiryairmamaitāni rūpāṇi rucirānane.
51. tataḥ tām abravīt devaḥ subhage śrūyatām iti
hetubhiḥ yaiḥ mama etāni rūpāṇi rucirānane
51. Then the God spoke to her: 'O beautiful one (subhage), please listen to the reasons by which these forms of mine (exist), O lovely-faced one (rucirānanā).'
