शृणु चेदं महाराज ब्रह्मभूतस्तवं मम ।
ब्रह्मर्षिभिश्च देवैश्च यः पुरा कथितो भुवि ॥१॥

śṛṇu cedaṁ mahārāja brahmabhūtastavaṁ mama ,
brahmarṣibhiśca devaiśca yaḥ purā kathito bhuvi.

1. Bhishma said: O great king, listen to this praise of mine, which pertains to the Supreme Reality (brahman) and was formerly spoken on earth by the Brahmarshis and the gods.
साध्यानामपि देवानां देवदेवेश्वरः प्रभुः ।
लोकभावनभावज्ञ इति त्वां नारदोऽब्रवीत् ।
भूतं भव्यं भविष्यं च मार्कण्डेयोऽभ्युवाच ह ॥२॥
2. sādhyānāmapi devānāṁ devadeveśvaraḥ prabhuḥ ,
lokabhāvanabhāvajña iti tvāṁ nārado'bravīt ,
bhūtaṁ bhavyaṁ bhaviṣyaṁ ca mārkaṇḍeyo'bhyuvāca ha.
2. sādhyānām api devānām devadeveśvaraḥ
prabhuḥ lokabhāvanabhāvajñaḥ iti
tvām nāradaḥ abravīt bhūtam bhavyam
bhaviṣyam ca mārkaṇḍeyaḥ abhyuvāca ha
2. nāradaḥ tvām sādhyānām api devānām
devadeveśvaraḥ prabhuḥ lokabhāvanabhāvajñaḥ
iti abravīt mārkaṇḍeyaḥ ca tvām
bhūtam bhavyam bhaviṣyam ha abhyuvāca
2. Narada declared you to be the supreme Lord, the Lord of the gods of gods, who rules even over the Sadhyas and other deities, and the Knower of the essential nature of the world's beings. Markandeya, indeed, declared you to be the past, the present, and the future.
यज्ञानां चैव यज्ञं त्वां तपश्च तपसामपि ।
देवानामपि देवं च त्वामाह भगवान्भृगुः ।
पुराणे भैरवं रूपं विष्णो भूतपतेति वै ॥३॥
3. yajñānāṁ caiva yajñaṁ tvāṁ tapaśca tapasāmapi ,
devānāmapi devaṁ ca tvāmāha bhagavānbhṛguḥ ,
purāṇe bhairavaṁ rūpaṁ viṣṇo bhūtapateti vai.
3. yajñānām ca eva yajñam tvām tapaḥ ca
tapasām api devānām api devam ca
tvām āha bhagavān bhṛguḥ purāṇe
bhairavam rūpam viṣṇo bhūtapate iti vai
3. bhagavān bhṛguḥ tvām yajñānām ca eva
yajñam ca tapasām api tapaḥ ca devānām
api devam āha purāṇe (tvām) bhairavam
rūpam 'viṣṇo bhūtapate' iti vai (āha)
3. The venerable Bhrigu declared You to be the very essence of Vedic ritual (yajña) among all Vedic rituals, the austerity (tapas) among all austerities, and indeed the God among all gods. Furthermore, in the Purāṇas, You are proclaimed as the terrifying form, "O Viṣṇu, Lord of beings (bhūtapati)!"
वासुदेवो वसूनां त्वं शक्रं स्थापयिता तथा ।
देवदेवोऽसि देवानामिति द्वैपायनोऽब्रवीत् ॥४॥
4. vāsudevo vasūnāṁ tvaṁ śakraṁ sthāpayitā tathā ,
devadevo'si devānāmiti dvaipāyano'bravīt.
4. vāsudevaḥ vasūnām tvam śakram sthāpayitā tathā
devadevaḥ asi devānām iti dvaipāyanaḥ abravīt
4. dvaipāyanaḥ abravīt iti tvam vasūnām vāsudevaḥ
tathā śakram sthāpayitā devānām devadevaḥ asi
4. Dvaipayana (Vyasa) declared: 'You are Vasudeva among the Vasus, and thus the establisher of Shakra (Indra). You are the God of gods among the gods!'
पूर्वे प्रजानिसर्गेषु दक्षमाहुः प्रजापतिम् ।
स्रष्टारं सर्वभूतानामङ्गिरास्त्वां ततोऽब्रवीत् ॥५॥
5. pūrve prajānisargeṣu dakṣamāhuḥ prajāpatim ,
sraṣṭāraṁ sarvabhūtānāmaṅgirāstvāṁ tato'bravīt.
5. pūrve prajānisargeṣu dakṣam āhuḥ prajāpatim
sraṣṭāram sarvabhūtānām aṅgirāḥ tvām tataḥ abravīt
5. pūrve prajānisargeṣu dakṣam prajāpatim sarvabhūtānām
sraṣṭāram āhuḥ tataḥ aṅgirāḥ tvām abravīt
5. In the previous creations of beings, they named Dakṣa Prajāpati, the creator of all creatures. It was then that Aṅgiras spoke of you.
अव्यक्तं ते शरीरोत्थं व्यक्तं ते मनसि स्थितम् ।
देवा वाक्संभवाश्चेति देवलस्त्वसितोऽब्रवीत् ॥६॥
6. avyaktaṁ te śarīrotthaṁ vyaktaṁ te manasi sthitam ,
devā vāksaṁbhavāśceti devalastvasito'bravīt.
6. avyaktam te śarīrottham vyaktam te manasi sthitam
devāḥ vāksaṃbhavāḥ ca iti devalaḥ tu asitaḥ abravīt
6. te avyaktam śarīrottham te vyaktam manasi sthitam
devāḥ ca vāksaṃbhavāḥ iti devalaḥ tu asitaḥ abravīt
6. The unmanifest (avyakta) has arisen from your body, and the manifest (vyakta) is situated in your mind. Furthermore, the gods are born from speech – thus indeed Asita Devala spoke.
शिरसा ते दिवं व्याप्तं बाहुभ्यां पृथिवी धृता ।
जठरं ते त्रयो लोकाः पुरुषोऽसि सनातनः ॥७॥
7. śirasā te divaṁ vyāptaṁ bāhubhyāṁ pṛthivī dhṛtā ,
jaṭharaṁ te trayo lokāḥ puruṣo'si sanātanaḥ.
7. śirasā te divam vyāptam bāhubhyām pṛthivī dhṛtā
jaṭharam te trayaḥ lokāḥ puruṣaḥ asi sanātanaḥ
7. te śirasā divam vyāptam te bāhubhyām pṛthivī dhṛtā
te jaṭharam trayaḥ lokāḥ puruṣaḥ sanātanaḥ asi
7. Heaven is pervaded by your head, the earth is supported by your two arms. Your abdomen contains the three worlds. You are the eternal cosmic person (puruṣa).
एवं त्वामभिजानन्ति तपसा भाविता नराः ।
आत्मदर्शनतृप्तानामृषीणां चापि सत्तमः ॥८॥
8. evaṁ tvāmabhijānanti tapasā bhāvitā narāḥ ,
ātmadarśanatṛptānāmṛṣīṇāṁ cāpi sattamaḥ.
8. evam tvām abhijānanti tapasā bhāvitāḥ narāḥ
ātmadarśanatṛptānām ṛṣīṇām ca api sattamaḥ
8. evam tapasā bhāvitāḥ narāḥ tvām abhijānanti
ca api sattamaḥ ātmadarśanatṛptānām ṛṣīṇām
8. Thus, men purified by austerity (tapas) recognize you. And, O best among the good (sattama), even sages who are content with the vision of the self (ātman) [recognize you].
राजर्षीणामुदाराणामाहवेष्वनिवर्तिनाम् ।
सर्वधर्मप्रधानानां त्वं गतिर्मधुसूदन ॥९॥
9. rājarṣīṇāmudārāṇāmāhaveṣvanivartinām ,
sarvadharmapradhānānāṁ tvaṁ gatirmadhusūdana.
9. rājṛṣīṇām udārāṇām āhaveṣu anivartinām
sarvadharma-pradhānānām tvam gatiḥ madhusūdana
9. madhusūdana tvam udārāṇām āhaveṣu anivartinām
sarvadharma-pradhānānām rājṛṣīṇām gatiḥ
9. O Madhusūdana, you are the refuge for the generous royal sages who never retreat in battles and who are preeminent in all aspects of natural law (dharma).
एष ते विस्तरस्तात संक्षेपश्च प्रकीर्तितः ।
केशवस्य यथातत्त्वं सुप्रीतो भव केशवे ॥१०॥
10. eṣa te vistarastāta saṁkṣepaśca prakīrtitaḥ ,
keśavasya yathātattvaṁ suprīto bhava keśave.
10. eṣaḥ te vistaraḥ tāta saṃkṣepaḥ ca prakīrtitaḥ
keśavasya yathātattvam suprītaḥ bhava keśave
10. tāta eṣaḥ te vistaraḥ ca saṃkṣepaḥ keśavasya yathātattvam prakīrtitaḥ.
keśave suprītaḥ bhava.
10. O dear one, this detailed account and summary of Keśava, presenting him as he truly is, has been recounted to you. May you be greatly pleased with Keśava.
संजय उवाच ।
पुण्यं श्रुत्वैतदाख्यानं महाराज सुतस्तव ।
केशवं बहु मेने स पाण्डवांश्च महारथान् ॥११॥
11. saṁjaya uvāca ,
puṇyaṁ śrutvaitadākhyānaṁ mahārāja sutastava ,
keśavaṁ bahu mene sa pāṇḍavāṁśca mahārathān.
11. sañjaya uvāca puṇyam śrutvā etat ākhyānam mahārāja
sutaḥ tava keśavam bahu mene sa pāṇḍavān ca mahārathān
11. sañjaya uvāca: mahārāja,
tava sutaḥ etat puṇyam ākhyānam śrutvā saḥ keśavam ca mahārathān pāṇḍavān bahu mene.
11. Sañjaya said: "Having heard this sacred narrative, O great king, your son greatly esteemed Keśava and the Pāṇḍavas, those great chariot warriors."
तमब्रवीन्महाराज भीष्मः शांतनवः पुनः ।
माहात्म्यं ते श्रुतं राजन्केशवस्य महात्मनः ॥१२॥
12. tamabravīnmahārāja bhīṣmaḥ śāṁtanavaḥ punaḥ ,
māhātmyaṁ te śrutaṁ rājankeśavasya mahātmanaḥ.
12. tam abravīt mahārāja bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavaḥ punaḥ
māhātmyam te śrutam rājan keśavasya mahātmanaḥ
12. mahārāja,
śāntanavaḥ bhīṣmaḥ punaḥ tam abravīt: rājan,
te mahātmanaḥ keśavasya māhātmyam śrutam.
12. O great king, Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, again spoke to him: "O King, you have heard the profound greatness of the great-souled (ātman) Keśava."
नरस्य च यथातत्त्वं यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ।
यदर्थं नृषु संभूतौ नरनारायणावुभौ ॥१३॥
13. narasya ca yathātattvaṁ yanmāṁ tvaṁ paripṛcchasi ,
yadarthaṁ nṛṣu saṁbhūtau naranārāyaṇāvubhau.
13. narasya ca yathātattvam yat mām tvam paripṛcchasi
yat artham nṛṣu saṃbhūtau nara-nārāyaṇau ubhau
13. tvam mām yat narasya yathātattvam ca paripṛcchasi
yat artham nṛṣu ubhau nara-nārāyaṇau saṃbhūtau
13. As you truly inquire of me regarding Nara's intrinsic nature (tattva), and for what purpose both Nara and Narayana were born among men.
अवध्यौ च यथा वीरौ संयुगेष्वपराजितौ ।
यथा च पाण्डवा राजन्नगम्या युधि कस्यचित् ॥१४॥
14. avadhyau ca yathā vīrau saṁyugeṣvaparājitau ,
yathā ca pāṇḍavā rājannagamyā yudhi kasyacit.
14. avadhyau ca yathā vīrau saṃyugeṣu aparājitau
yathā ca pāṇḍavā rājan agamyā yudhi kasyacit
14. yathā vīrau avadhyau ca saṃyugeṣu aparājitau
ca yathā rājan pāṇḍavā yudhi kasyacit agamyā
14. And just as these two heroes (Nara and Narayana) are not to be slain (avadhyau) and are unconquered in battles, so too, O King, the Pāṇḍavas are unconquerable in battle by anyone.
प्रीतिमान्हि दृढं कृष्णः पाण्डवेषु यशस्विषु ।
तस्माद्ब्रवीमि राजेन्द्र शमो भवतु पाण्डवैः ॥१५॥
15. prītimānhi dṛḍhaṁ kṛṣṇaḥ pāṇḍaveṣu yaśasviṣu ,
tasmādbravīmi rājendra śamo bhavatu pāṇḍavaiḥ.
15. prītimān hi dṛḍham kṛṣṇaḥ pāṇḍaveṣu yaśasviṣu
tasmāt bravīmi rājendra śamaḥ bhavatu pāṇḍavaiḥ
15. hi kṛṣṇaḥ dṛḍham prītimān yaśasviṣu pāṇḍaveṣu
tasmāt rājendra bravīmi pāṇḍavaiḥ śamaḥ bhavatu
15. Indeed, Kṛṣṇa is firmly devoted to the glorious Pāṇḍavas. Therefore, O King of kings, I say: let there be peace with the Pāṇḍavas.
पृथिवीं भुङ्क्ष्व सहितो भ्रातृभिर्बलिभिर्वशी ।
नरनारायणौ देवाववज्ञाय नशिष्यसि ॥१६॥
16. pṛthivīṁ bhuṅkṣva sahito bhrātṛbhirbalibhirvaśī ,
naranārāyaṇau devāvavajñāya naśiṣyasi.
16. pṛthivīm bhuṅkṣva sahitaḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ balibhiḥ
vaśī nara-nārāyaṇau devau avajñāya naśiṣyasi
16. vaśī pṛthivīm balibhiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ
bhuṅkṣva nara-nārāyaṇau devau avajñāya naśiṣyasi
16. O master (vaśī), rule the earth along with your mighty brothers. By disregarding the divine (deva) Nara and Narayana, you will perish.
एवमुक्त्वा तव पिता तूष्णीमासीद्विशां पते ।
व्यसर्जयच्च राजानं शयनं च विवेश ह ॥१७॥
17. evamuktvā tava pitā tūṣṇīmāsīdviśāṁ pate ,
vyasarjayacca rājānaṁ śayanaṁ ca viveśa ha.
17. evam uktvā tava pitā tūṣṇīm āsīt viśām pate
vyasarjayat ca rājānam śayanam ca viveśa ha
17. viśām pate tava pitā evam uktvā tūṣṇīm āsīt
ca rājānam vyasarjayat ca śayanam viveśa ha
17. O lord of people, having spoken thus, your father remained silent. He then dismissed the king and went to bed.
राजापि शिबिरं प्रायात्प्रणिपत्य महात्मने ।
शिश्ये च शयने शुभ्रे तां रात्रिं भरतर्षभ ॥१८॥
18. rājāpi śibiraṁ prāyātpraṇipatya mahātmane ,
śiśye ca śayane śubhre tāṁ rātriṁ bharatarṣabha.
18. rājā api śibiram prāyāt praṇipatya mahātmane
śiśye ca śayane śubhre tām rātrim bharatarṣabha
18. bharatarṣabha rājā api mahātmane praṇipatya
śibiram prāyāt ca śubhre śayane tām rātrim śiśye
18. O best of the Bharatas, the king also returned to his camp, having bowed down to the one with a great soul (mahātman). He then lay down on his clean bed for that night.
