Sañjaya said: Your son Vikarṇa, having approached that chariotiess and noble-minded Citrasena, helped him mount a chariot.

As that fierce and confused battle was raging so intensely, Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, swiftly rushed towards Yudhiṣṭhira.

Then, the Sañjayas, with their chariots, elephants, and horses, trembled, and they considered Yudhiṣṭhira to have reached the mouth of death.

4.
Yudhiṣṭhira, the mighty scion of Kuru, accompanied by the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva), also went towards Bhīṣma, the son of Śāntanu, that great archer and tiger among men.

5.
Then, the son of Pāṇḍu, showering thousands of arrows in battle, covered Bhīṣma, just as a cloud covers the sun.

6.
O descendant of Bharata, the son of Gaṅgā (Bhīṣma) received those perfectly discharged volleys of arrows by the hundreds and by the thousands.

7.
O respected one, similarly, the volleys of arrows released by Bhīṣma appeared in the sky like flocks of birds.

8.
And in half a moment, Bhīṣma, son of Śāntanu, made the son of Kuntī (Arjuna) invisible in battle, covering him with volleys of arrows piece by piece.

Then, King Yudhiṣṭhira, enraged, dispatched an arrow, venomous-snake-like, towards the great-souled Kauravya (Bhishma).

10.
O King (rājan), before that arrow (tam), which was discharged from his (Yudhiṣṭhira's) bow and still in flight (asaṃprāptam), could reach, the great charioteer (mahārathaḥ) Bhishma cut it in battle (samare) with a razor-sharp arrow (kṣurapreṇa).

11.
Indeed, having cut that arrow (tam nārācam), which was like (the dart of) Death (kālasaṃmitam), in battle (raṇe), Bhishma then killed the gold-adorned (kāñcanabhūṣaṇān) horses (hayān) of the chief of the Kurus (kauravendrasya, i.e., Yudhiṣṭhira).

12.
Indeed, having abandoned his chariot (ratham) whose horses (aśvam) were slain (hata), Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Dharma (natural law) (dharmaputraḥ), quickly (tūrṇam) mounted (āruroha) the chariot (ratham) of the great-souled (mahātmanaḥ) Nakula.

13.
Then, Bhishma, the conqueror of enemy cities, exceedingly enraged, having confronted the two (twins) in battle, overwhelmed them with arrows.

14.
But, O great king, having seen those two (twins) tormented by Bhishma's arrows, (Yudhishthira) then fell into deep anxiety, desiring Bhishma's death.

Then Yudhishthira urged all those obedient allied kings, saying, 'Kill Bhishma, the son of Shantanu!'

16.
Then, all those kings, having heard the words of Partha (Yudhishthira), surrounded the grandfather (Bhishma) with a great host of chariots.

The Pārthas (sons of Pṛthā) saw him, the Kuru warrior, moving actively in battle, just like a lion cub that has entered a herd of deer in the forest.

19.
O great king, having seen him threatening brave warriors in battle and terrifying them with his arrows, they trembled, just as herds of deer (mṛgagaṇā) would tremble before a lion.

The kshatriyas witnessed the formidable action of the lion of the Bharatas (bharatasiṃha) in battle, just as one sees fire, assisted by the wind, wishing to consume dry grass (kakṣam).

22.
O great king, a tumultuous sound arose on the ground from the falling heads, like the sound of falling stones.

But while that tumultuous and extremely fierce battle was ongoing, there was a great intertwining (vyatikara) and confusion among all the armies.

When those battle formations were shattered, the warriors (kṣatriyāḥ) challenged each other individually and stood ready for battle.

Then Bhishma, enraged, disregarded Shikhandi in battle. Considering Shikhandi's female nature (strītva), he proceeded instead towards the Srinjayas.

29.
Then, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the Pāñcāla prince, and Sātyaki, both great charioteers, severely afflicted your army with showers of spears and javelins and many other weapons, O King, and they killed your men in battle.

O best of men (puruṣarṣabha), even while being killed in battle, your men, having adopted a noble (āryā) resolve for combat, did not abandon the fight. And the great charioteers in battle killed people according to their might.
