वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तस्यां रजन्यां व्युष्टायां धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः ।
उत्थायावश्यकार्याणि कृतवान्भ्रतृभिः सह ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tasyāṁ rajanyāṁ vyuṣṭāyāṁ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
utthāyāvaśyakāryāṇi kṛtavānbhratṛbhiḥ saha.
1. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca | tasyām rajanyām vyuṣṭāyām dharmarājaḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ | utthāya avaśyakāryāṇi kṛtavān bhrātṛbhiḥ saha
1. Vaiśaṃpāyana said: "When that night had passed, Yudhiṣṭhira, the king of natural law (dharma), having risen, performed his necessary duties with his brothers."
ततः संचोदयामास सोऽर्जुनं भ्रातृनन्दनम् ।
दर्शयास्त्राणि कौन्तेय यैर्जिता दानवास्त्वया ॥२॥
2. tataḥ saṁcodayāmāsa so'rjunaṁ bhrātṛnandanam ,
darśayāstrāṇi kaunteya yairjitā dānavāstvayā.
2. tataḥ saṃcodayāmāsa saḥ arjunam bhrātṛnandanam
darśaya astrāṇi kaunteya yaiḥ jitāḥ dānavāḥ tvayā
2. Then he urged Arjuna, the delight of his brothers: "O son of Kunti, display the weapons with which you conquered the demons!"
ततो धनंजयो राजन्देवैर्दत्तानि पाण्डवः ।
अस्त्राणि तानि दिव्यानि दर्शयामास भारत ॥३॥
3. tato dhanaṁjayo rājandevairdattāni pāṇḍavaḥ ,
astrāṇi tāni divyāni darśayāmāsa bhārata.
3. tataḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ rājan devaiḥ dattāni pāṇḍavaḥ
astrāṇi tāni divyāni darśayāmāsa bhārata
3. O King, then Dhanaṃjaya, the Pāṇḍava, O Bhārata, demonstrated those divine weapons which had been bestowed upon him by the gods.
यथान्यायं महातेजाः शौचं परममास्थितः ।
गिरिकूबरं पादपाङ्गं शुभवेणु त्रिवेणुकम् ।
पार्थिवं रथमास्थाय शोभमानो धनंजयः ॥४॥
4. yathānyāyaṁ mahātejāḥ śaucaṁ paramamāsthitaḥ ,
girikūbaraṁ pādapāṅgaṁ śubhaveṇu triveṇukam ,
pārthivaṁ rathamāsthāya śobhamāno dhanaṁjayaḥ.
4. yathānyāyam mahātejāḥ śaucam paramam
āsthitaḥ girikūbaram pādapāṅgam
śubhāveṇu triveṇukam pārthivam
ratham āsthāya śobhamānaḥ dhanaṃjayaḥ
4. The greatly effulgent Dhanaṃjaya (Arjuna), having duly established supreme purity (śauca), mounted his royal chariot, which possessed a pole lofty like a mountain, parts made of wood, auspicious bamboo decorations, and three bamboo staff-like ornaments, and thus he shone splendidly.
ततः सुदंशितस्तेन कवचेन सुवर्चसा ।
धनुरादाय गाण्डीवं देवदत्तं च वारिजम् ॥५॥
5. tataḥ sudaṁśitastena kavacena suvarcasā ,
dhanurādāya gāṇḍīvaṁ devadattaṁ ca vārijam.
5. tataḥ sudaṃśitaḥ tena kavacena suvarcasā
dhanuḥ ādāya gāṇḍīvam devadattam ca vārijam
5. Then, splendidly protected by that well-fitted armor, he took up the Gāṇḍīva bow and the Devadatta conch.
शोशुभ्यमानः कौन्तेय आनुपूर्व्यान्महाभुजः ।
अस्त्राणि तानि दिव्यानि दर्शनायोपचक्रमे ॥६॥
6. śośubhyamānaḥ kaunteya ānupūrvyānmahābhujaḥ ,
astrāṇi tāni divyāni darśanāyopacakrame.
6. śośubhyamānaḥ kaunteyaḥ ānupūrvyāt mahābhujaḥ
astrāṇi tāni divyāni darśanāya upacakrame
6. The mighty-armed (mahābhujaḥ) son of Kunti (kaunteya), shining brightly, began to display those divine weapons (astrāṇi) sequentially.
अथ प्रयोक्ष्यमाणेन दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि तेन वै ।
समाक्रान्ता मही पद्भ्यां समकम्पत सद्रुमा ॥७॥
7. atha prayokṣyamāṇena divyānyastrāṇi tena vai ,
samākrāntā mahī padbhyāṁ samakampata sadrumā.
7. atha prayokṣyamāṇena divyāni astrāṇi tena vai
samākrāntā mahī padbhyām samakampat sadrumā
7. Then, as he was about to deploy those divine weapons (astrāṇi), the earth (mahī), pervaded by his feet, trembled along with its trees (sadrumā).
क्षुभिताः सरितश्चैव तथैव च महोदधिः ।
शैलाश्चापि व्यशीर्यन्त न ववौ च समीरणः ॥८॥
8. kṣubhitāḥ saritaścaiva tathaiva ca mahodadhiḥ ,
śailāścāpi vyaśīryanta na vavau ca samīraṇaḥ.
8. kṣubhitāḥ saritaḥ ca eva tathā eva ca mahodadhiḥ
śailāḥ ca api vyaśīryanta na vavau ca samīraṇaḥ
8. The rivers (saritaḥ) became agitated, and likewise (tathaiva) the great ocean (mahodadhiḥ). The mountains (śailāḥ) also crumbled, and the wind (samīraṇaḥ) did not blow.
न बभासे सहस्रांशुर्न जज्वाल च पावकः ।
न वेदाः प्रतिभान्ति स्म द्विजातीनां कथंचन ॥९॥
9. na babhāse sahasrāṁśurna jajvāla ca pāvakaḥ ,
na vedāḥ pratibhānti sma dvijātīnāṁ kathaṁcana.
9. na babhāse sahasrāṃśuḥ na jajvāla ca pāvakaḥ
na vedāḥ pratibhānti sma dvijātīnām kathañcana
9. The sun (sahasrāṃśuḥ) did not shine, nor did the fire (pāvakaḥ) blaze. Even the Vedas (vedāḥ) did not become clear to the twice-born (dvijātīnām) at all.
अन्तर्भूमिगता ये च प्राणिनो जनमेजय ।
पीड्यमानाः समुत्थाय पाण्डवं पर्यवारयन् ॥१०॥
10. antarbhūmigatā ye ca prāṇino janamejaya ,
pīḍyamānāḥ samutthāya pāṇḍavaṁ paryavārayan.
10. antarbhūmigatāḥ ye ca prāṇinaḥ janamejaya
pīḍyamānāḥ samutthāya pāṇḍavam paryavārayan
10. O Janamejaya, those living beings who were dwelling within the earth, being tormented, rose up and surrounded Arjuna.
वेपमानाः प्राञ्जलयस्ते सर्वे पिहिताननाः ।
दह्यमानास्तदास्त्रैस्तैर्याचन्ति स्म धनंजयम् ॥११॥
11. vepamānāḥ prāñjalayaste sarve pihitānanāḥ ,
dahyamānāstadāstraistairyācanti sma dhanaṁjayam.
11. vepamānāḥ prāñjalayaḥ te sarve pihitānanāḥ
dahyamānāḥ tadā astraiḥ taiḥ yācanti sma dhanañjayam
11. Trembling, all of them, with folded hands and covered faces, being burnt by those weapons, then begged Arjuna.
ततो ब्रह्मर्षयश्चैव सिद्धाश्चैव सुरर्षयः ।
जङ्गमानि च भूतानि सर्वाण्येवावतस्थिरे ॥१२॥
12. tato brahmarṣayaścaiva siddhāścaiva surarṣayaḥ ,
jaṅgamāni ca bhūtāni sarvāṇyevāvatasthire.
12. tataḥ brahmarṣayaḥ ca eva siddhāḥ ca eva surarṣayaḥ
jaṅgamāni ca bhūtāni sarvāṇi eva avatasthire
12. Then, the Brahmin sages, the perfected beings, and the divine sages, indeed all moving creatures, took their stand.
राजर्षयश्च प्रवरास्तथैव च दिवौकसः ।
यक्षराक्षसगन्धर्वास्तथैव च पतत्रिणः ॥१३॥
13. rājarṣayaśca pravarāstathaiva ca divaukasaḥ ,
yakṣarākṣasagandharvāstathaiva ca patatriṇaḥ.
13. rājarṣayaḥ ca pravarāḥ tathā eva ca divaukasaḥ
yakṣarākṣasagandharvāḥ tathā eva ca patatriṇaḥ
13. And the foremost royal sages, and similarly the celestial beings, as well as Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, Gandharvas, and likewise the birds (all gathered).
ततः पितामहश्चैव लोकपालाश्च सर्वशः ।
भगवांश्च महादेवः सगणोऽभ्याययौ तदा ॥१४॥
14. tataḥ pitāmahaścaiva lokapālāśca sarvaśaḥ ,
bhagavāṁśca mahādevaḥ sagaṇo'bhyāyayau tadā.
14. tataḥ pitāmahaḥ ca eva lokapālāḥ ca sarvaśaḥ
bhagavān ca mahādevaḥ sagaṇaḥ abhyāyayau tadā
14. Then, Brahmā (Pitāmaha) and all the guardians of the worlds, as well as the venerable great god (Mahādeva) with his retinue, arrived at that time.
ततो वायुर्महाराज दिव्यैर्माल्यैः सुगन्धिभिः ।
अभितः पाण्डवांश्चित्रैरवचक्रे समन्ततः ॥१५॥
15. tato vāyurmahārāja divyairmālyaiḥ sugandhibhiḥ ,
abhitaḥ pāṇḍavāṁścitrairavacakre samantataḥ.
15. tataḥ vāyuḥ mahārāja divyaiḥ mālyaiḥ sugandhibhiḥ
abhitaḥ pāṇḍavān citraiḥ avacakre samantataḥ
15. Then, O great king, Vayu showered the Pāṇḍavas all around with divine, fragrant, and variegated garlands.
जगुश्च गाथा विविधा गन्धर्वाः सुरचोदिताः ।
ननृतुः संघशश्चैव राजन्नप्सरसां गणाः ॥१६॥
16. jaguśca gāthā vividhā gandharvāḥ suracoditāḥ ,
nanṛtuḥ saṁghaśaścaiva rājannapsarasāṁ gaṇāḥ.
16. jaguḥ ca gāthāḥ vividhāḥ gandharvāḥ suracoditāḥ
nanṛtuḥ saṃghaśaḥ ca eva rājan apsarasām gaṇāḥ
16. And the Gandharvas, inspired by the gods, sang various songs, while, O king, hosts of Apsarases indeed danced in groups.
तस्मिंस्तु तुमुले काले नारदः सुरचोदितः ।
आगम्याह वचः पार्थं श्रवणीयमिदं नृप ॥१७॥
17. tasmiṁstu tumule kāle nāradaḥ suracoditaḥ ,
āgamyāha vacaḥ pārthaṁ śravaṇīyamidaṁ nṛpa.
17. tasmin tu tumule kāle nāradaḥ suracoditaḥ
āgamya āha vacaḥ pārtham śravaṇīyam idam nṛpa
17. But, O king, at that tumultuous time, Nārada, impelled by the gods, approached and spoke these words, which were worthy of being heard, to Pārtha (Arjuna).
अर्जुनार्जुन मा युङ्क्ष्व दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि भारत ।
नैतानि निरधिष्ठाने प्रयुज्यन्ते कदाचन ॥१८॥
18. arjunārjuna mā yuṅkṣva divyānyastrāṇi bhārata ,
naitāni niradhiṣṭhāne prayujyante kadācana.
18. arjuna arjuna mā yuṅkṣva divyāni astrāṇi bhārata
na etāni niradhiṣṭhāne prayujyante kadācana
18. O Arjuna, O Arjuna, O Bhārata, do not employ these divine weapons. They are never to be used without a proper target or a suitable context.
अधिष्ठाने न वानार्तः प्रयुञ्जीत कदाचन ।
प्रयोगे सुमहान्दोषो ह्यस्त्राणां कुरुनन्दन ॥१९॥
19. adhiṣṭhāne na vānārtaḥ prayuñjīta kadācana ,
prayoge sumahāndoṣo hyastrāṇāṁ kurunandana.
19. adhiṣṭhāne na vā anārtaḥ prayuñjīta kadācana
prayoge sumahān doṣaḥ hi astrāṇām kurunandana
19. One who is not in distress should never employ (them), not even with a proper target. For, O delight of the Kurus, there is indeed a very great harm in the (improper) use of weapons.
एतानि रक्ष्यमाणानि धनंजय यथागमम् ।
बलवन्ति सुखार्हाणि भविष्यन्ति न संशयः ॥२०॥
20. etāni rakṣyamāṇāni dhanaṁjaya yathāgamam ,
balavanti sukhārhāṇi bhaviṣyanti na saṁśayaḥ.
20. etāni rakṣyamāṇāni dhanañjaya yathā āgamam
balavanti sukhārhāṇi bhaviṣyanti na saṃśayaḥ
20. O Dhanañjaya, these (weapons), when protected according to tradition (āgama), will be powerful and conducive to well-being; there is no doubt about this.
अरक्ष्यमाणान्येतानि त्रैलोक्यस्यापि पाण्डव ।
भवन्ति स्म विनाशाय मैवं भूयः कृथाः क्वचित् ॥२१॥
21. arakṣyamāṇānyetāni trailokyasyāpi pāṇḍava ,
bhavanti sma vināśāya maivaṁ bhūyaḥ kṛthāḥ kvacit.
21. arakṣyamāṇāni etāni trailokyasya api pāṇḍava
bhavanti sma vināśāya mā evam bhūyaḥ kṛthāḥ kvacit
21. O Pāṇḍava, if these (weapons) are not protected, they become the cause of destruction even for the three worlds. Therefore, do not ever act in such a way again.
अजातशत्रो त्वं चैव द्रक्ष्यसे तानि संयुगे ।
योज्यमानानि पार्थेन द्विषतामवमर्दने ॥२२॥
22. ajātaśatro tvaṁ caiva drakṣyase tāni saṁyuge ,
yojyamānāni pārthena dviṣatāmavamardane.
22. ajātaśatro tvam ca eva drakṣyase tāni saṃyuge
yojyamānāni pārthena dviṣatām avamardane
22. O Ajātaśatru, you will certainly see those (divine weapons) being employed by Pārtha in battle for the destruction of the enemies.
निवार्याथ ततः पार्थं सर्वे देवा यथागतम् ।
जग्मुरन्ये च ये तत्र समाजग्मुर्नरर्षभ ॥२३॥
23. nivāryātha tataḥ pārthaṁ sarve devā yathāgatam ,
jagmuranye ca ye tatra samājagmurnararṣabha.
23. nivārya atha tataḥ pārtham sarve devāḥ yathāgatam
jagmuḥ anye ca ye tatra samājagmuḥ naraṛṣabha
23. O best among men (naraṛṣabha), then, having stopped Pārtha, all the gods departed as they had arrived, and so did the others who had assembled there.
तेषु सर्वेषु कौरव्य प्रतियातेषु पाण्डवाः ।
तस्मिन्नेव वने हृष्टास्त ऊषुः सह कृष्णया ॥२४॥
24. teṣu sarveṣu kauravya pratiyāteṣu pāṇḍavāḥ ,
tasminneva vane hṛṣṭāsta ūṣuḥ saha kṛṣṇayā.
24. teṣu sarveṣu kauravya pratiyāteṣu pāṇḍavāḥ
tasmin eva vane hṛṣṭāḥ te ūṣuḥ saha kṛṣṇayā
24. O descendant of Kuru (kauravya), when all of them had departed, the Pāṇḍavas, delighted, dwelled in that very forest with Kṛṣṇā.
