मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततो ब्रह्मर्षयः सिद्धा देवराजर्षयस्तथा ।
हव्यवाहं पुरस्कृत्य ब्रह्माणं शरणं गताः ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
tato brahmarṣayaḥ siddhā devarājarṣayastathā ,
havyavāhaṁ puraskṛtya brahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ.
1. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca tataḥ brahmarṣayaḥ siddhāḥ devarājarṣayaḥ
tathā havyavāham puraskṛtya brahmāṇam śaraṇam gatāḥ
1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, the brahminical sages (brahmarṣayaḥ), the perfected beings (siddhāḥ), and also the divine royal sages (devarājarṣayaḥ), placing Agni (Havyavāha) in front, went to Brahmā for refuge.
अग्निरुवाच ।
यः स विश्रवसः पुत्रो दशग्रीवो महाबलः ।
अवध्यो वरदानेन कृतो भगवता पुरा ॥२॥
2. agniruvāca ,
yaḥ sa viśravasaḥ putro daśagrīvo mahābalaḥ ,
avadhyo varadānena kṛto bhagavatā purā.
2. agniḥ uvāca yaḥ saḥ viśravasaḥ putraḥ daśagrīvaḥ
mahābalaḥ avadhyaḥ varadānena kṛtaḥ bhagavatā purā
2. Agni said: That one, who is the son of Viśravas, the ten-headed and greatly powerful one, was made immune to death (avadhyaḥ) by a boon (varadānena) by the Lord (Bhagavān) in ancient times.
स बाधते प्रजाः सर्वा विप्रकारैर्महाबलः ।
ततो नस्त्रातु भगवन्नान्यस्त्राता हि विद्यते ॥३॥
3. sa bādhate prajāḥ sarvā viprakārairmahābalaḥ ,
tato nastrātu bhagavannānyastrātā hi vidyate.
3. saḥ bādhate prajāḥ sarvāḥ viprakāraiḥ mahābalaḥ
tataḥ naḥ trātu bhagavan na anyaḥ trātā hi vidyate
3. That greatly powerful one harasses all creatures with various acts of oppression. Therefore, O Lord (Bhagavan), protect us, for no other savior (trātā) truly exists!
ब्रह्मोवाच ।
न स देवासुरैः शक्यो युद्धे जेतुं विभावसो ।
विहितं तत्र यत्कार्यमभितस्तस्य निग्रहे ॥४॥
4. brahmovāca ,
na sa devāsuraiḥ śakyo yuddhe jetuṁ vibhāvaso ,
vihitaṁ tatra yatkāryamabhitastasya nigrahe.
4. brahmā uvāca na saḥ devāsuraiḥ śakyaḥ yuddhe jetum
vibhāvaso vihitam tatra yatkāryam abhitaḥ tasya nigrahe
4. Brahmā said: "O Vibhāvasu, he cannot be conquered in battle by either gods or asuras. Therefore, whatever action is necessary for his complete subjugation has already been ordained."
तदर्थमवतीर्णोऽसौ मन्नियोगाच्चतुर्भुजः ।
विष्णुः प्रहरतां श्रेष्ठः स कर्मैतत्करिष्यति ॥५॥
5. tadarthamavatīrṇo'sau manniyogāccaturbhujaḥ ,
viṣṇuḥ praharatāṁ śreṣṭhaḥ sa karmaitatkariṣyati.
5. tadartham avatīrṇaḥ asau mat niyogāt caturbhujaḥ
viṣṇuḥ praharatām śreṣṭhaḥ saḥ karma etat kariṣyati
5. For that purpose, the four-armed Viṣṇu, who is the foremost among warriors, has descended by my command. He will accomplish this action (karma).
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
पितामहस्ततस्तेषां संनिधौ वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।
सर्वैर्देवगणैः सार्धं संभवध्वं महीतले ॥६॥
6. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
pitāmahastatasteṣāṁ saṁnidhau vākyamabravīt ,
sarvairdevagaṇaiḥ sārdhaṁ saṁbhavadhvaṁ mahītale.
6. mārkaṇḍeyaḥ uvāca pitāmahaḥ tataḥ teṣām saṃnidhau vākyam
abravīt sarvaiḥ devagaṇaiḥ sārdham saṃbhavadhvam mahītale
6. Mārkaṇḍeya said: "Then the grandfather (Brahmā) spoke in their presence, saying: 'All of you, together with all the hosts of gods, should take birth on the earth!'"
विष्णोः सहायानृक्षीषु वानरीषु च सर्वशः ।
जनयध्वं सुतान्वीरान्कामरूपबलान्वितान् ॥७॥
7. viṣṇoḥ sahāyānṛkṣīṣu vānarīṣu ca sarvaśaḥ ,
janayadhvaṁ sutānvīrānkāmarūpabalānvitān.
7. viṣṇoḥ sahāyān ṛkṣīṣu vānarīṣu ca sarvaśaḥ
janayadhvam sutān vīrān kāmarūpabalānvitān
7. Give birth to heroic sons, endowed with strength and forms according to their will, who will be helpers of Viṣṇu, everywhere, among the female bears and female monkeys.
ततो भागानुभागेन देवगन्धर्वदानवाः ।
अवतर्तुं महीं सर्वे रञ्जयामासुरञ्जसा ॥८॥
8. tato bhāgānubhāgena devagandharvadānavāḥ ,
avatartuṁ mahīṁ sarve rañjayāmāsurañjasā.
8. tataḥ bhāgānubhāgena deva-gandharva-dānavāḥ
avatartum mahīm sarve rañjayām āsuḥ añjasā
8. Then, all the gods (deva), gandharvas, and dānavas, by their respective portions, descended to the earth and instantly gladdened it.
तेषां समक्षं गन्धर्वीं दुन्दुभीं नाम नामतः ।
शशास वरदो देवो देवकार्यार्थसिद्धये ॥९॥
9. teṣāṁ samakṣaṁ gandharvīṁ dundubhīṁ nāma nāmataḥ ,
śaśāsa varado devo devakāryārthasiddhaye.
9. teṣām samakṣam gandharvīm dundubhīm nāma nāmataḥ
śaśāsa varadaḥ devaḥ deva-kārya-artha-siddhaye
9. Before them, the boon-granting god (deva) commanded the gandharvī named Dundubhī for the fulfillment of the gods' purpose.
पितामहवचः श्रुत्वा गन्धर्वी दुन्दुभी ततः ।
मन्थरा मानुषे लोके कुब्जा समभवत्तदा ॥१०॥
10. pitāmahavacaḥ śrutvā gandharvī dundubhī tataḥ ,
mantharā mānuṣe loke kubjā samabhavattadā.
10. pitāmaha-vacaḥ śrutvā gandharvī dundubhī tataḥ
mantharā mānuṣe loke kubjā samabhavat tadā
10. Having heard the words of the Grandfather (Brahmā), the gandharvī Dundubhī then became Mantharā, a hunchbacked woman, in the human world at that time.
शक्रप्रभृतयश्चैव सर्वे ते सुरसत्तमाः ।
वानरर्क्षवरस्त्रीषु जनयामासुरात्मजान् ।
तेऽन्ववर्तन्पितॄन्सर्वे यशसा च बलेन च ॥११॥
11. śakraprabhṛtayaścaiva sarve te surasattamāḥ ,
vānararkṣavarastrīṣu janayāmāsurātmajān ,
te'nvavartanpitṝnsarve yaśasā ca balena ca.
11. śakra-prabhṛtayaḥ ca eva sarve te
sura-sattamāḥ vānara-ṛkṣa-vara-strīṣu
janayām āsuḥ ātmajān te anu-avartanta
pitṝn sarve yaśasā ca balena ca
11. And indeed, all those foremost among the gods (deva), led by Indra (śakra), begot sons (ātman) among the excellent wives of the monkeys and bears. All of them then followed their fathers (pitṛ) in fame and strength.
भेत्तारो गिरिशृङ्गाणां शालतालशिलायुधाः ।
वज्रसंहननाः सर्वे सर्वे चौघबलास्तथा ॥१२॥
12. bhettāro giriśṛṅgāṇāṁ śālatālaśilāyudhāḥ ,
vajrasaṁhananāḥ sarve sarve caughabalāstathā.
12. bhettāraḥ giriśṛṅgāṇām śālatālaśilāyudhāḥ
vajrasaṃhananāḥ sarve sarve ca oghabalāḥ tathā
12. They were shatterers of mountain peaks, using sal trees, palm trees, and rocks as their weapons. All of them possessed bodies as hard as a thunderbolt (vajra), and all had the strength of a great flood.
कामवीर्यधराश्चैव सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः ।
नागायुतसमप्राणा वायुवेगसमा जवे ।
यत्रेच्छकनिवासाश्च केचिदत्र वनौकसः ॥१३॥
13. kāmavīryadharāścaiva sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ ,
nāgāyutasamaprāṇā vāyuvegasamā jave ,
yatrecchakanivāsāśca kecidatra vanaukasaḥ.
13. kāmavīryadharāḥ ca eva sarve
yuddhaviśāradāḥ nāgāyutasamaprāṇāḥ
vāyuvegasamāḥ jave yatrecchakanivāsāḥ
ca kecit atra vanaukasaḥ
13. And all of them possessed desired valor and were skilled in battle. They had life-force (prāṇa) equal to ten thousand elephants and were equal to the speed of wind in swiftness. Some of these forest-dwellers resided wherever they wished.
एवं विधाय तत्सर्वं भगवाँल्लोकभावनः ।
मन्थरां बोधयामास यद्यत्कार्यं यथा यथा ॥१४॥
14. evaṁ vidhāya tatsarvaṁ bhagavāँllokabhāvanaḥ ,
mantharāṁ bodhayāmāsa yadyatkāryaṁ yathā yathā.
14. evam vidhāya tat sarvam bhagavān lokabhāvanaḥ
mantharām bodhayāmāsa yat yat kāryam yathā yathā
14. Having thus accomplished all that, the venerable Lord (bhagavān), the sustainer of the worlds, instructed Manthara on whatever tasks needed to be done and how they should be carried out.
सा तद्वचनमाज्ञाय तथा चक्रे मनोजवा ।
इतश्चेतश्च गच्छन्ती वैरसंधुक्षणे रता ॥१५॥
15. sā tadvacanamājñāya tathā cakre manojavā ,
itaścetaśca gacchantī vairasaṁdhukṣaṇe ratā.
15. sā tat vacanam ājñāya tathā cakre manojavā itaḥ
ca itaḥ ca gacchanti vairasaṃdhukṣaṇe ratā
15. Having understood his words, she, swift as thought, then acted accordingly. Moving here and there, she was intent on kindling animosity.
