वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तां शमीमुपसंगम्य पार्थो वैराटिमब्रवीत् ।
सुकुमारं समाज्ञातं संग्रामे नातिकोविदम् ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tāṁ śamīmupasaṁgamya pārtho vairāṭimabravīt ,
sukumāraṁ samājñātaṁ saṁgrāme nātikovidam.
1. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca tām śamīm upasangamya pārthaḥ vairāṭim
abravīt sukumāram samājñātam saṃgrāme na atikovidam
1. Vaiśampāyana said: Having approached that śami tree, Pārtha (Arjuna) said to the son of Virāṭa (Uttara), who was considered very delicate and not very skilled in battle.
समादिष्टो मया क्षिप्रं धनूंष्यवहरोत्तर ।
नेमानि हि त्वदीयानि सोढुं शक्ष्यन्ति मे बलम् ॥२॥
2. samādiṣṭo mayā kṣipraṁ dhanūṁṣyavaharottara ,
nemāni hi tvadīyāni soḍhuṁ śakṣyanti me balam.
2. samādiṣṭaḥ mayā kṣipram dhanūṃṣi avahara uttara
na imāni hi tvadīyāni soḍhum śakṣyanti me balam
2. O Uttara! You have been commanded by me to quickly take away these bows. Indeed, these bows, which belong to you, will not be able to bear my strength.
भारं वापि गुरुं हर्तुं कुञ्जरं वा प्रमर्दितुम् ।
मम वा बाहुविक्षेपं शत्रूनिह विजेष्यतः ॥३॥
3. bhāraṁ vāpi guruṁ hartuṁ kuñjaraṁ vā pramarditum ,
mama vā bāhuvikṣepaṁ śatrūniha vijeṣyataḥ.
3. bhāram vā api gurum hartum kuñjaram vā pramarditum
mama vā bāhuvikṣepam śatrūn iha vijeṣyataḥ
3. My two (companions), by the exertion of their arms, will here conquer enemies, or carry a heavy burden, or crush an elephant.
तस्माद्भूमिंजयारोह शमीमेतां पलाशिनीम् ।
अस्यां हि पाण्डुपुत्राणां धनूंषि निहितान्युत ॥४॥
4. tasmādbhūmiṁjayāroha śamīmetāṁ palāśinīm ,
asyāṁ hi pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ dhanūṁṣi nihitānyuta.
4. tasmāt bhūmiṃjaya āroha śamīm etām palāśinīm
asyām hi pāṇḍuputrāṇām dhanūṃṣi nihitāni uta
4. Therefore, O Bhumijaya, climb this leafy śamī tree, for indeed, the bows of the sons of Pāṇḍu (Pandavas) are deposited in it.
युधिष्ठिरस्य भीमस्य बीभत्सोर्यमयोस्तथा ।
ध्वजाः शराश्च शूराणां दिव्यानि कवचानि च ॥५॥
5. yudhiṣṭhirasya bhīmasya bībhatsoryamayostathā ,
dhvajāḥ śarāśca śūrāṇāṁ divyāni kavacāni ca.
5. yudhiṣṭhirasya bhīmasya bībhatsoḥ yamayoḥ tathā
dhvajāḥ śarāḥ ca śūrāṇām divyāni kavacāni ca
5. Here are the banners, arrows, and divine armours of Yudhishthira, Bhima, Bibhatsu (Arjuna), and the two Yamas (Nakula and Sahadeva) - these heroes.
अत्र चैतन्महावीर्यं धनुः पार्थस्य गाण्डिवम् ।
एकं शतसहस्रेण संमितं राष्ट्रवर्धनम् ॥६॥
6. atra caitanmahāvīryaṁ dhanuḥ pārthasya gāṇḍivam ,
ekaṁ śatasahasreṇa saṁmitaṁ rāṣṭravardhanam.
6. atra ca etat mahāvīryam dhanuḥ pārthasya gāṇḍivam
ekam śatasahasreṇa saṃmitam rāṣṭravardhanam
6. And here is this greatly powerful bow of Partha (Arjuna), the Gaṇḍīva, which alone is comparable to a hundred thousand (other bows) and enhances the kingdom.
व्यायामसहमत्यर्थं तृणराजसमं महत् ।
सर्वायुधमहामात्रं शत्रुसंबाधकारकम् ॥७॥
7. vyāyāmasahamatyarthaṁ tṛṇarājasamaṁ mahat ,
sarvāyudhamahāmātraṁ śatrusaṁbādhakārakam.
7. vyāyāmasamartham tṛṇarājasamam mahat
sarvāyudhamahāmātram śatrusaṃbādhakārakam
7. It was suitable for intense practice, as vast as a royal palm, containing all great weapons, and causing distress to enemies.
सुवर्णविकृतं दिव्यं श्लक्ष्णमायतमव्रणम् ।
अलं भारं गुरुं वोढुं दारुणं चारुदर्शनम् ।
तादृशान्येव सर्वाणि बलवन्ति दृढानि च ॥८॥
8. suvarṇavikṛtaṁ divyaṁ ślakṣṇamāyatamavraṇam ,
alaṁ bhāraṁ guruṁ voḍhuṁ dāruṇaṁ cārudarśanam ,
tādṛśānyeva sarvāṇi balavanti dṛḍhāni ca.
8. suvarṇavikṛtam divyam ślakṣṇam
āyatam avraṇam alam bhāram gurum
voḍhum dāruṇam cārudarśanam tādṛśāni
eva sarvāṇi balavanti dṛḍhāni ca
8. It was crafted from gold, divine, smooth, long, and without blemish. Capable of bearing a heavy weight, formidable yet beautiful to behold. All of them were similarly powerful and firm.
उत्तर उवाच ।
अस्मिन्वृक्षे किलोद्बद्धं शरीरमिति नः श्रुतम् ।
तदहं राजपुत्रः सन्स्पृशेयं पाणिना कथम् ॥९॥
9. uttara uvāca ,
asminvṛkṣe kilodbaddhaṁ śarīramiti naḥ śrutam ,
tadahaṁ rājaputraḥ sanspṛśeyaṁ pāṇinā katham.
9. uttaraḥ uvāca asmin vṛkṣe kila udbaddham śarīram iti naḥ
śrutam tat aham rājaputraḥ san spṛśeyam pāṇinā katham
9. Uttara said: "Indeed, we have heard that a body (corpse) is tied up in this tree. How, then, can I, being a prince, touch it with my hand?"
नैवंविधं मया युक्तमालब्धुं क्षत्रयोनिना ।
महता राजपुत्रेण मन्त्रयज्ञविदा सता ॥१०॥
10. naivaṁvidhaṁ mayā yuktamālabdhuṁ kṣatrayoninā ,
mahatā rājaputreṇa mantrayajñavidā satā.
10. na evamvidham mayā yuktam ālabdhum kṣatrayoninā
mahatā rājaputreṇa mantrayajñavidā satā
10. It is not proper for me, who am of a warrior origin (kṣatriya) and a great prince, conversant with sacred utterances (mantra) and rituals (yajña), to touch such a thing.
स्पृष्टवन्तं शरीरं मां शववाहमिवाशुचिम् ।
कथं वा व्यवहार्यं वै कुर्वीथास्त्वं बृहन्नडे ॥११॥
11. spṛṣṭavantaṁ śarīraṁ māṁ śavavāhamivāśucim ,
kathaṁ vā vyavahāryaṁ vai kurvīthāstvaṁ bṛhannaḍe.
11. spṛṣṭavantam śarīram mām śavavāham iva aśucim
katham vā vyavahāryam vai kurvīthāḥ tvam bṛhannade
11. O Bṛhannadā, how can you consider me, whose body has touched (the corpse) and is therefore impure (aśucim) like a corpse-bearer, to be fit for interaction?
बृहन्नडोवाच ।
व्यवहार्यश्च राजेन्द्र शुचिश्चैव भविष्यसि ।
धनूंष्येतानि मा भैस्त्वं शरीरं नात्र विद्यते ॥१२॥
12. bṛhannaḍovāca ,
vyavahāryaśca rājendra śuciścaiva bhaviṣyasi ,
dhanūṁṣyetāni mā bhaistvaṁ śarīraṁ nātra vidyate.
12. bṛhannadaḥ uvāca vyavahāryaḥ ca rājendra śuciḥ ca eva
bhaviṣyasi dhanūṃṣi etāni mā bhaiḥ tvam śarīram na atra vidyate
12. Bṛhannadā said: 'O King (rājendra), you will indeed be worthy of interaction and pure (śuci). Do not fear these bows; (the impure) body (śarīra) is not here (to contaminate you or be a source of fear).'
दायादं मत्स्यराजस्य कुले जातं मनस्विनम् ।
कथं त्वा निन्दितं कर्म कारयेयं नृपात्मज ॥१३॥
13. dāyādaṁ matsyarājasya kule jātaṁ manasvinam ,
kathaṁ tvā ninditaṁ karma kārayeyaṁ nṛpātmaja.
13. dāyādam matsyarājasya kule jātam manasvinam
katham tvā ninditam karma kārayeyam nṛpātmaja
13. O Prince (nṛpātmaja), how can I make you, who are a noble (manasvinam) heir born in the lineage of the Matsya king, perform a blameworthy action (karma)?
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
एवमुक्तः स पार्थेन रथात्प्रस्कन्द्य कुण्डली ।
आरुरोह शमीवृक्षं वैराटिरवशस्तदा ॥१४॥
14. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
evamuktaḥ sa pārthena rathātpraskandya kuṇḍalī ,
āruroha śamīvṛkṣaṁ vairāṭiravaśastadā.
14. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca evam uktaḥ saḥ pārthena rathāt
praskandya kuṇḍalī ārūroha śamīvṛkṣam vairāṭiḥ avaśaḥ tadā
14. Vaiśampāyana said: 'Thus addressed by Pārtha (Arjuna), Uttara (vairāṭi), adorned with earrings (kuṇḍalī), then helplessly (avaśaḥ) jumped down from the chariot and climbed the śamī tree.'
तमन्वशासच्छत्रुघ्नो रथे तिष्ठन्धनंजयः ।
परिवेष्टनमेतेषां क्षिप्रं चैव व्यपानुद ॥१५॥
15. tamanvaśāsacchatrughno rathe tiṣṭhandhanaṁjayaḥ ,
pariveṣṭanameteṣāṁ kṣipraṁ caiva vyapānuda.
15. tam anvaśāsat śatrughnaḥ rathe tiṣṭhan dhanañjayaḥ
pariveṣṭanam eteṣām kṣipram ca eva vyapānuda
15. Shatrughna, standing in the chariot, instructed Dhananjaya (Arjuna): "Quickly undo the wrappings of these."
तथा संनहनान्येषां परिमुच्य समन्ततः ।
अपश्यद्गाण्डिवं तत्र चतुर्भिरपरैः सह ॥१६॥
16. tathā saṁnahanānyeṣāṁ parimucya samantataḥ ,
apaśyadgāṇḍivaṁ tatra caturbhiraparaiḥ saha.
16. tathā saṃnahanāni eṣām parimucya samantataḥ
apaśyat gāṇḍīvam tatra caturbhiḥ aparaiḥ saha
16. Thus, having untied the wrappings of these (bows) from all sides, he saw the (bow) Gandiva there along with four other (bows).
तेषां विमुच्यमानानां धनुषामर्कवर्चसाम् ।
विनिश्चेरुः प्रभा दिव्या ग्रहाणामुदयेष्विव ॥१७॥
17. teṣāṁ vimucyamānānāṁ dhanuṣāmarkavarcasām ,
viniśceruḥ prabhā divyā grahāṇāmudayeṣviva.
17. teṣām vimucyamānānām dhanuṣām arkavarcasām
viniśceruḥ prabhā divyā grahāṇām udayeṣu iva
17. As those bows, shining with the brilliance of the sun, were being untied, divine splendors emerged from them, similar to (the light) at the rising of planets.
स तेषां रूपमालोक्य भोगिनामिव जृम्भताम् ।
हृष्टरोमा भयोद्विग्नः क्षणेन समपद्यत ॥१८॥
18. sa teṣāṁ rūpamālokya bhogināmiva jṛmbhatām ,
hṛṣṭaromā bhayodvignaḥ kṣaṇena samapadyata.
18. sa teṣām rūpam ālokya bhoginām iva jṛmbhatām
hṛṣṭaromā bhayodvignaḥ kṣaṇena samapadyata
18. He, having observed their appearance, like that of stretching serpents, instantly became one whose hairs stood on end, agitated by fear.
संस्पृश्य तानि चापानि भानुमन्ति बृहन्ति च ।
वैराटिरर्जुनं राजन्निदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१९॥
19. saṁspṛśya tāni cāpāni bhānumanti bṛhanti ca ,
vairāṭirarjunaṁ rājannidaṁ vacanamabravīt.
19. saṃspṛśya tāni cāpāni bhānumanti bṛhanti ca
vairāṭiḥ arjunam rājan idam vacanam abravīt
19. Touching those resplendent and mighty bows, the son of Virāṭa, O King, spoke these words to Arjuna.
उत्तर उवाच ।
बिन्दवो जातरूपस्य शतं यस्मिन्निपातिताः ।
सहस्रकोटि सौवर्णाः कस्यैतद्धनुरुत्तमम् ॥२०॥
20. uttara uvāca ,
bindavo jātarūpasya śataṁ yasminnipātitāḥ ,
sahasrakoṭi sauvarṇāḥ kasyaitaddhanuruttamam.
20. uttaraḥ uvāca bindavaḥ jātarūpasya śatam yasmin
nipātitāḥ sahasrakoṭi sauvarṇāḥ kasya etat dhanuḥ uttamam
20. Uttara said: "On which bow are a hundred drops of pure gold inlaid, and a thousand crores of golden ornaments? Whose is this excellent bow?"
वारणा यस्य सौवर्णाः पृष्ठे भासन्ति दंशिताः ।
सुपार्श्वं सुग्रहं चैव कस्यैतद्धनुरुत्तमम् ॥२१॥
21. vāraṇā yasya sauvarṇāḥ pṛṣṭhe bhāsanti daṁśitāḥ ,
supārśvaṁ sugrahaṁ caiva kasyaitaddhanuruttamam.
21. vāraṇāḥ yasya sauvarṇāḥ pṛṣṭhe bhāsanti daṃśitāḥ
supārśvam sugraham ca eva kasya etat dhanuḥ uttamam
21. Whose bow has golden protective coverings shining on its back, and is both well-formed and easy to grip? Whose is this excellent bow?
तपनीयस्य शुद्धस्य षष्टिर्यस्येन्द्रगोपकाः ।
पृष्ठे विभक्ताः शोभन्ते कस्यैतद्धनुरुत्तमम् ॥२२॥
22. tapanīyasya śuddhasya ṣaṣṭiryasyendragopakāḥ ,
pṛṣṭhe vibhaktāḥ śobhante kasyaitaddhanuruttamam.
22. tapanīyasya śuddhasya ṣaṣṭiḥ yasya indragopakāḥ
pṛṣṭhe vibhaktāḥ śobhante kasya etat dhanuḥ uttamam
22. On whose bow do sixty 'indragopaka' gems of pure refined gold (tapanīya) shine, beautifully arranged on its back? Whose is this excellent bow?
सूर्या यत्र च सौवर्णास्त्रयो भासन्ति दंशिताः ।
तेजसा प्रज्वलन्तो हि कस्यैतद्धनुरुत्तमम् ॥२३॥
23. sūryā yatra ca sauvarṇāstrayo bhāsanti daṁśitāḥ ,
tejasā prajvalanto hi kasyaitaddhanuruttamam.
23. sūryāḥ yatra ca sauvarṇāḥ trayaḥ bhāsanti daṃśitāḥ
tejasā prajvalantaḥ hi kasya etat dhanuḥ uttamam
23. Whose is this excellent bow, on which three golden suns, splendidly adorned, shine, truly blazing with radiance?
शालभा यत्र सौवर्णास्तपनीयविचित्रिताः ।
सुवर्णमणिचित्रं च कस्यैतद्धनुरुत्तमम् ॥२४॥
24. śālabhā yatra sauvarṇāstapanīyavicitritāḥ ,
suvarṇamaṇicitraṁ ca kasyaitaddhanuruttamam.
24. śālabhāḥ yatra sauvarṇāḥ tapanīyavicitritāḥ
suvarṇamaṇicitram ca kasya etat dhanuḥ uttamam
24. Whose is this excellent bow, on which there are golden moth-like figures adorned with refined gold, and variegated with gold and jewels?
इमे च कस्य नाराचाः सहस्रा लोमवाहिनः ।
समन्तात्कलधौताग्रा उपासङ्गे हिरण्मये ॥२५॥
25. ime ca kasya nārācāḥ sahasrā lomavāhinaḥ ,
samantātkaladhautāgrā upāsaṅge hiraṇmaye.
25. ime ca kasya nārācāḥ sahasrāḥ lomavāhinaḥ
samantāt kaladhautāgrāḥ upāsaṅge hiraṇmaye
25. And whose are these thousands of iron arrows, finely feathered, with tips of pure gold all around, in this golden quiver?
विपाठाः पृथवः कस्य गार्ध्रपत्राः शिलाशिताः ।
हारिद्रवर्णाः सुनसाः पीताः सर्वायसाः शराः ॥२६॥
26. vipāṭhāḥ pṛthavaḥ kasya gārdhrapatrāḥ śilāśitāḥ ,
hāridravarṇāḥ sunasāḥ pītāḥ sarvāyasāḥ śarāḥ.
26. vipāṭhāḥ pṛthavaḥ kasya gārdhrapatrāḥ śilāśitāḥ
hāridravarṇāḥ sunasāḥ pītāḥ sarvāyasāḥ śarāḥ
26. Whose are these wide, yellow, entirely iron arrows, broad-headed, feathered with eagle wings, sharpened on stone, and with keen points?
कस्यायमसितावापः पञ्चशार्दूललक्षणः ।
वराहकर्णव्यामिश्रः शरान्धारयते दश ॥२७॥
27. kasyāyamasitāvāpaḥ pañcaśārdūlalakṣaṇaḥ ,
varāhakarṇavyāmiśraḥ śarāndhārayate daśa.
27. kasya ayam asitāvāpaḥ pañcaśārdūlalakṣaṇaḥ
varāhakarṇavyāmiśraḥ śarān dhārayate daśa
27. Whose is this dark quiver, marked with five tigers and adorned with boar's ears, that holds ten arrows?
कस्येमे पृथवो दीर्घाः सर्वपारशवाः शराः ।
शतानि सप्त तिष्ठन्ति नाराचा रुधिराशनाः ॥२८॥
28. kasyeme pṛthavo dīrghāḥ sarvapāraśavāḥ śarāḥ ,
śatāni sapta tiṣṭhanti nārācā rudhirāśanāḥ.
28. kasya ime pṛthavaḥ dīrghāḥ sarvapāraśavāḥ śarāḥ
śatāni sapta tiṣṭhanti nārācāḥ rudhirāśanāḥ
28. Whose are these broad, long, and entirely metallic arrows? There are seven hundred blood-drinking iron darts.
कस्येमे शुकपत्राभैः पूर्वैरर्धैः सुवाससः ।
उत्तरैरायसैः पीतैर्हेमपुङ्खैः शिलाशितैः ॥२९॥
29. kasyeme śukapatrābhaiḥ pūrvairardhaiḥ suvāsasaḥ ,
uttarairāyasaiḥ pītairhemapuṅkhaiḥ śilāśitaiḥ.
29. kasya ime śukapattrābhaiḥ pūrvaiḥ ardhaiḥ suvāsasaḥ
uttaraiḥ āyasaiḥ pītaiḥ hemapuṅkhaiḥ śilāśitaiḥ
29. Whose are these arrows, whose front parts are well-fletched like parrot feathers, and whose rear parts are yellow, made of iron, with golden nocks, and sharpened on stone?
कस्यायं सायको दीर्घः शिलीपृष्ठः शिलीमुखः ।
वैयाघ्रकोशे निहितो हेमचित्रत्सरुर्महान् ॥३०॥
30. kasyāyaṁ sāyako dīrghaḥ śilīpṛṣṭhaḥ śilīmukhaḥ ,
vaiyāghrakośe nihito hemacitratsarurmahān.
30. kasya ayam sāyakaḥ dīrghaḥ śilīpṛṣṭhaḥ śilīmukhaḥ
vaiyāghrakośe nihitaḥ hemacitrattsaruḥ mahān
30. Whose is this long, mighty arrow, with a slender shaft and a sharp point, kept in a tiger-skin quiver, and adorned with a golden and variegated grip?
सुफलश्चित्रकोशश्च किङ्किणीसायको महान् ।
कस्य हेमत्सरुर्दिव्यः खड्गः परमनिर्व्रणः ॥३१॥
31. suphalaścitrakośaśca kiṅkiṇīsāyako mahān ,
kasya hematsarurdivyaḥ khaḍgaḥ paramanirvraṇaḥ.
31. suphalaḥ citrakośaḥ ca kiṅkiṇīsāyakaḥ mahān
kasya hematsaruḥ divyaḥ khaḍgaḥ paramanirvraṇaḥ
31. Whose is this great sword, which is effective, has a wonderfully decorated sheath, and is adorned with tinkling bells? Whose is this divine sword, possessing a golden hilt and utterly flawless?
कस्यायं विमलः खड्गो गव्ये कोशे समर्पितः ।
हेमत्सरुरनाधृष्यो नैषध्यो भारसाधनः ॥३२॥
32. kasyāyaṁ vimalaḥ khaḍgo gavye kośe samarpitaḥ ,
hematsaruranādhṛṣyo naiṣadhyo bhārasādhanaḥ.
32. kasya ayam vimalaḥ khaḍgaḥ gavye kośe samarpitaḥ
hematsaruḥ anādhṛṣyaḥ naiṣadhyaḥ bhārasādhanaḥ
32. Whose is this spotless sword, which is kept in a cowhide sheath? It has a golden hilt, is irresistible, belongs to the king of Niṣadha, and accomplishes great tasks.
कस्य पाञ्चनखे कोशे सायको हेमविग्रहः ।
प्रमाणरूपसंपन्नः पीत आकाशसंनिभः ॥३३॥
33. kasya pāñcanakhe kośe sāyako hemavigrahaḥ ,
pramāṇarūpasaṁpannaḥ pīta ākāśasaṁnibhaḥ.
33. kasya pāñcanakhe kośe sāyakaḥ hemavigrahaḥ
pramāṇarūpasaṃpannaḥ pītaḥ ākāśasaṃnibhaḥ
33. Whose is this arrow (sāyaka), with a golden body, kept in a sheath made from the hide of a five-clawed animal? It is endowed with perfect measure and form, is yellow-golden, and shines like the sky.
कस्य हेममये कोशे सुतप्ते पावकप्रभे ।
निस्त्रिंशोऽयं गुरुः पीतः सैक्यः परमनिर्व्रणः ॥३४॥
34. kasya hemamaye kośe sutapte pāvakaprabhe ,
nistriṁśo'yaṁ guruḥ pītaḥ saikyaḥ paramanirvraṇaḥ.
34. kasya hemamaye kośe sutapte pāvakaprabhe nistriṃśaḥ
ayam guruḥ pītaḥ saikyaḥ paramanirvraṇaḥ
34. Whose is this sword (nistriṃśa), kept in a golden sheath, which is intensely brilliant and shines like fire? This heavy, yellow-golden, iron-made sword is utterly flawless.
निर्दिशस्व यथातत्त्वं मया पृष्टा बृहन्नडे ।
विस्मयो मे परो जातो दृष्ट्वा सर्वमिदं महत् ॥३५॥
35. nirdiśasva yathātattvaṁ mayā pṛṣṭā bṛhannaḍe ,
vismayo me paro jāto dṛṣṭvā sarvamidaṁ mahat.
35. nirdeśasva yathātattvam mayā pṛṣṭā bṛhannale
vismayaḥ me paraḥ jātaḥ dṛṣṭvā sarvam idam mahat
35. Bṛhannalā, as I have asked you, please explain the truth. Great astonishment has arisen in me after seeing all this magnificent display.
बृहन्नडोवाच ।
यन्मां पूर्वमिहापृच्छः शत्रुसेनानिबर्हणम् ।
गाण्डीवमेतत्पार्थस्य लोकेषु विदितं धनुः ॥३६॥
36. bṛhannaḍovāca ,
yanmāṁ pūrvamihāpṛcchaḥ śatrusenānibarhaṇam ,
gāṇḍīvametatpārthasya lokeṣu viditaṁ dhanuḥ.
36. bṛhannalaḥ uvāca yat mām pūrvam iha apṛcchaḥ śatrusenānibarhaṇam
gāṇḍīvam etat pārthasya lokeṣu viditam dhanuḥ
36. Bṛhannalā said, "O destroyer of enemy armies, what you previously asked me about here - this Gāṇḍīva is Pārtha's (Arjuna's) bow, renowned in all the worlds."
सर्वायुधमहामात्रं शातकुम्भपरिष्कृतम् ।
एतत्तदर्जुनस्यासीद्गाण्डीवं परमायुधम् ॥३७॥
37. sarvāyudhamahāmātraṁ śātakumbhapariṣkṛtam ,
etattadarjunasyāsīdgāṇḍīvaṁ paramāyudham.
37. sarvāyudhamahāmātram śātakuṃbhapariṣkṛtam etat
tat arjunasya āsīt gāṇḍīvam param āyudham
37. Adorned with pure gold, this Gāṇḍīva was Arjuna's supreme weapon, the foremost of all weapons.
यत्तच्छतसहस्रेण संमितं राष्ट्रवर्धनम् ।
येन देवान्मनुष्यांश्च पार्थो विषहते मृधे ॥३८॥
38. yattacchatasahasreṇa saṁmitaṁ rāṣṭravardhanam ,
yena devānmanuṣyāṁśca pārtho viṣahate mṛdhe.
38. yat tat śatasahasreṇa saṃmitam rāṣṭravardhanam
yena devān manuṣyān ca pārthaḥ viṣahate mṛdhe
38. That bow, which is equivalent to a hundred thousand (weapons) and enhances the kingdom, is what Pārtha (Arjuna) uses to conquer both gods and humans in battle.
देवदानवगन्धर्वैः पूजितं शाश्वतीः समाः ।
एतद्वर्षसहस्रं तु ब्रह्मा पूर्वमधारयत् ॥३९॥
39. devadānavagandharvaiḥ pūjitaṁ śāśvatīḥ samāḥ ,
etadvarṣasahasraṁ tu brahmā pūrvamadhārayat.
39. deva dānava gandharvaiḥ pūjitam śāśvatīḥ samāḥ
etat varṣasahasram tu brahmā pūrvam adhārayat
39. Worshipped by gods, demons, and celestial musicians (gandharvas) for perpetual years, Brahmā (brahman) formerly held this (bow) for a thousand years.
ततोऽनन्तरमेवाथ प्रजापतिरधारयत् ।
त्रीणि पञ्चशतं चैव शक्रोऽशीति च पञ्च च ॥४०॥
40. tato'nantaramevātha prajāpatiradhārayat ,
trīṇi pañcaśataṁ caiva śakro'śīti ca pañca ca.
40. tataḥ anantaram eva atha prajāpatiḥ adhārayat
trīṇi pañcaśatam ca eva śakraḥ aśīti ca pañca ca
40. Thereafter, Prajāpati (lord of creatures) immediately held it for three times five hundred (1500) years. And indeed, Śakra (Indra) held it for eighty-five years.
सोमः पञ्चशतं राजा तथैव वरुणः शतम् ।
पार्थः पञ्च च षष्टिं च वर्षाणि श्वेतवाहनः ॥४१॥
41. somaḥ pañcaśataṁ rājā tathaiva varuṇaḥ śatam ,
pārthaḥ pañca ca ṣaṣṭiṁ ca varṣāṇi śvetavāhanaḥ.
41. somaḥ pañcaśatam rājā tathā eva varuṇaḥ śatam
pārthaḥ pañca ca ṣaṣṭim ca varṣāṇi śvetavāhanaḥ
41. King Soma held it for five hundred (years). Likewise, Varuṇa (held it for) a hundred (years). And Pārtha (Arjuna), also known as Śvetavāhana, held it for sixty-five years.
महावीर्यं महद्दिव्यमेतत्तद्धनुरुत्तमम् ।
पूजितं सुरमर्त्येषु बिभर्ति परमं वपुः ॥४२॥
42. mahāvīryaṁ mahaddivyametattaddhanuruttamam ,
pūjitaṁ suramartyeṣu bibharti paramaṁ vapuḥ.
42. mahāvīryam mahat divyam etat tat dhanuḥ uttamam
pūjitam suramartyeṣu bibharti paramam vapuḥ
42. This great, mighty, divine, and excellent bow, which is revered by both gods and mortals, possesses a supreme form.
सुपार्श्वं भीमसेनस्य जातरूपग्रहं धनुः ।
येन पार्थोऽजयत्कृत्स्नां दिशं प्राचीं परंतपः ॥४३॥
43. supārśvaṁ bhīmasenasya jātarūpagrahaṁ dhanuḥ ,
yena pārtho'jayatkṛtsnāṁ diśaṁ prācīṁ paraṁtapaḥ.
43. supārśvam bhīmasenasya jātarūpagraham dhanuḥ yena
pārthaḥ ajayat kṛtsnām diśam prācīm paraṃtapaḥ
43. This is Bhīmasena's well-proportioned bow, which has a golden grip, and with which Arjuna, the tormentor of foes, conquered the entire eastern direction.
इन्द्रगोपकचित्रं च यदेतच्चारुविग्रहम् ।
राज्ञो युधिष्ठिरस्यैतद्वैराटे धनुरुत्तमम् ॥४४॥
44. indragopakacitraṁ ca yadetaccāruvigraham ,
rājño yudhiṣṭhirasyaitadvairāṭe dhanuruttamam.
44. indragopakacitram ca yat etat cāruvigraham rājñaḥ
yudhiṣṭhirasya etat vairāṭe dhanuḥ uttamam
44. And this excellent bow, beautiful in form and adorned with the colors of cochineals, belongs to King Yudhiṣṭhira, (which is currently) in the kingdom of Virāṭa.
सूर्या यस्मिंस्तु सौवर्णाः प्रभासन्ते प्रभासिनः ।
तेजसा प्रज्वलन्तो वै नकुलस्यैतदायुधम् ॥४५॥
45. sūryā yasmiṁstu sauvarṇāḥ prabhāsante prabhāsinaḥ ,
tejasā prajvalanto vai nakulasyaitadāyudham.
45. sūryāḥ yasmin tu sauvarṇāḥ prabhāsante prabhāsinaḥ
tejasā prajvalantaḥ vai nakulasya etat āyudham
45. This is Nakula's weapon, on which golden suns, brilliant and blazing with splendor, indeed shine forth.
शलभा यत्र सौवर्णास्तपनीयविचित्रिताः ।
एतन्माद्रीसुतस्यापि सहदेवस्य कार्मुकम् ॥४६॥
46. śalabhā yatra sauvarṇāstapanīyavicitritāḥ ,
etanmādrīsutasyāpi sahadevasya kārmukam.
46. śalabhāḥ yatra sauvarṇāḥ tapanīyavicitritāḥ
etat mādrīputrasya api sahadevasya kārmukam
46. This is also the bow of Sahadeva, the son of Mādrī, on which golden figures resembling locusts, splendidly variegated with refined gold, are depicted.
ये त्विमे क्षुरसंकाशाः सहस्रा लोमवाहिनः ।
एतेऽर्जुनस्य वैराटे शराः सर्पविषोपमाः ॥४७॥
47. ye tvime kṣurasaṁkāśāḥ sahasrā lomavāhinaḥ ,
ete'rjunasya vairāṭe śarāḥ sarpaviṣopamāḥ.
47. ye tu ime kṣurasaṃkāśāḥ sahasrā lomavāhinaḥ
ete arjunasya vairāṭe śarāḥ sarpaviṣopamāḥ
47. These thousands of Arjuna's arrows, which are sharp like razors and carry away hair (of the enemy), are like snake venom in the Virāṭa war.
एते ज्वलन्तः संग्रामे तेजसा शीघ्रगामिनः ।
भवन्ति वीरस्याक्षय्या व्यूहतः समरे रिपून् ॥४८॥
48. ete jvalantaḥ saṁgrāme tejasā śīghragāminaḥ ,
bhavanti vīrasyākṣayyā vyūhataḥ samare ripūn.
48. ete jvalantaḥ saṃgrāme tejasā śīghragāminaḥ
bhavanti vīrasya akṣayyāḥ vyūhataḥ samare ripūn
48. These (arrows), blazing in battle with their brilliance and moving swiftly, become inexhaustible for the hero, routing enemies in combat.
ये चेमे पृथवो दीर्घाश्चन्द्रबिम्बार्धदर्शनाः ।
एते भीमस्य निशिता रिपुक्षयकराः शराः ॥४९॥
49. ye ceme pṛthavo dīrghāścandrabimbārdhadarśanāḥ ,
ete bhīmasya niśitā ripukṣayakarāḥ śarāḥ.
49. ye ca ime pṛthavaḥ dīrghāḥ candrabimbārdhadarśanāḥ
ete bhīmasya niśitāḥ ripukṣayakarāḥ śarāḥ
49. And these broad, long arrows, which appear like a half-moon disc, are Bhīma's sharpened arrows that destroy enemies.
हारिद्रवर्णा ये त्वेते हेमपुङ्खाः शिलाशिताः ।
नकुलस्य कलापोऽयं पञ्चशार्दूललक्षणः ॥५०॥
50. hāridravarṇā ye tvete hemapuṅkhāḥ śilāśitāḥ ,
nakulasya kalāpo'yaṁ pañcaśārdūlalakṣaṇaḥ.
50. hāridravarṇāḥ ye tu ete hemapuṅkhāḥ śilāśitāḥ
nakulasya kalāpaḥ ayam pañcaśārdūlalakṣaṇaḥ
50. These arrows, yellow like turmeric, with golden shafts, and sharpened on stone, constitute Nakula's quiver, which is marked with five tigers.
येनासौ व्यजयत्कृत्स्नां प्रतीचीं दिशमाहवे ।
कलापो ह्येष तस्यासीन्माद्रीपुत्रस्य धीमतः ॥५१॥
51. yenāsau vyajayatkṛtsnāṁ pratīcīṁ diśamāhave ,
kalāpo hyeṣa tasyāsīnmādrīputrasya dhīmataḥ.
51. yena asau vyajayat kṛtsnām pratīcīm diśam āhave
kalāpaḥ hi eṣa tasya āsīt mādrīputrasya dhīmataḥ
51. Indeed, this quiver belonged to that intelligent son of Mādrī (Sahadeva), with which he conquered the entire western direction in battle.
ये त्विमे भास्कराकाराः सर्वपारशवाः शराः ।
एते चित्राः क्रियोपेताः सहदेवस्य धीमतः ॥५२॥
52. ye tvime bhāskarākārāḥ sarvapāraśavāḥ śarāḥ ,
ete citrāḥ kriyopetāḥ sahadevasya dhīmataḥ.
52. ye tu ime bhāskarākārāḥ sarvapāraśavāḥ śarāḥ
ete citrāḥ kriyopetāḥ sahadevasya dhīmataḥ
52. But these arrows, which shine like the sun and are all made of steel, these wonderful and effective ones belong to intelligent Sahadeva.
ये त्विमे निशिताः पीताः पृथवो दीर्घवाससः ।
हेमपुङ्खास्त्रिपर्वाणो राज्ञ एते महाशराः ॥५३॥
53. ye tvime niśitāḥ pītāḥ pṛthavo dīrghavāsasaḥ ,
hemapuṅkhāstriparvāṇo rājña ete mahāśarāḥ.
53. ye tu ime niśitāḥ pītāḥ pṛthavaḥ dīrghavāsasaḥ
hemapuṅkhāḥ triparvāṇaḥ rājñaḥ ete mahāśarāḥ
53. But these sharpened, yellow, broad, and long-feathered arrows, with golden fletching and three sections, these great arrows belong to the King.
यस्त्वयं सायको दीर्घः शिलीपृष्ठः शिलीमुखः ।
अर्जुनस्यैष संग्रामे गुरुभारसहो दृढः ॥५४॥
54. yastvayaṁ sāyako dīrghaḥ śilīpṛṣṭhaḥ śilīmukhaḥ ,
arjunasyaiṣa saṁgrāme gurubhārasaho dṛḍhaḥ.
54. yaḥ tu ayam sāyakaḥ dīrghaḥ śilīpṛṣṭhaḥ śilīmukhaḥ
arjunasya eṣa saṅgrāme gurubhārasahaḥ dṛḍhaḥ
54. But this long arrow, sharp-backed and sharp-pointed, is Arjuna's; it is firm and capable of enduring a great burden in battle.
वैयाघ्रकोशस्तु महान्भीमसेनस्य सायकः ।
गुरुभारसहो दिव्यः शात्रवाणां भयंकरः ॥५५॥
55. vaiyāghrakośastu mahānbhīmasenasya sāyakaḥ ,
gurubhārasaho divyaḥ śātravāṇāṁ bhayaṁkaraḥ.
55. vaiyāghrakośaḥ tu mahān bhīmasenasya sāyakaḥ
gurubhārasahaḥ divyaḥ śātravāṇām bhayaṃkaraḥ
55. Bhimasena's great weapon, which is housed in a tiger-skin sheath, is divine, capable of enduring heavy burdens, and terrifying to enemies.
सुफलश्चित्रकोशश्च हेमत्सरुरनुत्तमः ।
निस्त्रिंशः कौरवस्यैष धर्मराजस्य धीमतः ॥५६॥
56. suphalaścitrakośaśca hematsaruranuttamaḥ ,
nistriṁśaḥ kauravasyaiṣa dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ.
56. suphalaḥ citrakośaḥ ca hematsaruḥ anuttamaḥ
nistriṃśaḥ kauravasya eṣa dharmarājasya dhīmataḥ
56. This sword (nistriṃśa) belonging to the wise king of righteousness (dharma), Yudhishthira, a Kuru prince, is exceedingly effective, beautifully sheathed, gold-hilted, and unsurpassed.
यस्तु पाञ्चनखे कोशे निहितश्चित्रसेवने ।
नकुलस्यैष निस्त्रिंशो गुरुभारसहो दृढः ॥५७॥
57. yastu pāñcanakhe kośe nihitaścitrasevane ,
nakulasyaiṣa nistriṁśo gurubhārasaho dṛḍhaḥ.
57. yaḥ tu pāñcanakhe kośe nihitaḥ citrasevane
nakulasya eṣa nistriṃśaḥ gurubhārasahaḥ dṛḍhaḥ
57. This sword (nistriṃśa) of Nakula, which is housed in a sheath made of the skin of a five-clawed animal and also has a beautifully adorned covering, is strong and capable of enduring heavy burdens.
यस्त्वयं विमलः खड्गो गव्ये कोशे समर्पितः ।
सहदेवस्य विद्ध्येनं सर्वभारसहं दृढम् ॥५८॥
58. yastvayaṁ vimalaḥ khaḍgo gavye kośe samarpitaḥ ,
sahadevasya viddhyenaṁ sarvabhārasahaṁ dṛḍham.
58. yaḥ tu ayam vimalaḥ khaḍgaḥ gavye kośe samarpitaḥ
sahadevasya viddhi enam sarvabhārasaham dṛḍham
58. This spotless sword, which is placed in a cow-hide sheath, know it to be Sahadeva's; it is strong and capable of enduring all burdens.
