मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
ततोऽविदूरे नलिनीं प्रभूतकमलोत्पलाम् ।
सीताहरणदुःखार्तः पम्पां रामः समासदत् ॥१॥
1. mārkaṇḍeya uvāca ,
tato'vidūre nalinīṁ prabhūtakamalotpalām ,
sītāharaṇaduḥkhārtaḥ pampāṁ rāmaḥ samāsadat.

1. Mārkaṇḍeya said: Then, not far from that spot, Rama, afflicted by the grief of Sītā’s abduction, reached Pampā, a lake abundant with lotuses and water lilies.
मारुतेन सुशीतेन सुखेनामृतगन्धिना ।
सेव्यमानो वने तस्मिञ्जगाम मनसा प्रियाम् ॥२॥
2. mārutena suśītena sukhenāmṛtagandhinā ,
sevyamāno vane tasmiñjagāma manasā priyām.
2. mārūtena suśītena sukhena amṛtagandhinā |
sevyamānaḥ vane tasmin jagāma manasā priyām
2. As he was refreshed in that forest by a very cool, pleasant wind, which was fragrant like nectar, his mind went to his beloved.
विललाप स राजेन्द्रस्तत्र कान्तामनुस्मरन् ।
कामबाणाभिसंतप्तः सौमित्रिस्तमथाब्रवीत् ॥३॥
3. vilalāpa sa rājendrastatra kāntāmanusmaran ,
kāmabāṇābhisaṁtaptaḥ saumitristamathābravīt.
3. vilalāpa saḥ rājendraḥ tatra kāntām anusmaran |
kāmabāṇābhisantaptaḥ saumitriḥ tam atha abravīt
3. That king (Rāma), remembering his beloved, lamented there, deeply afflicted by the arrows of Kāma (the god of love). Then Lakṣmaṇa (Saumitri) spoke to him.
न त्वामेवंविधो भावः स्प्रष्टुमर्हति मानद ।
आत्मवन्तमिव व्याधिः पुरुषं वृद्धशीलिनम् ॥४॥
4. na tvāmevaṁvidho bhāvaḥ spraṣṭumarhati mānada ,
ātmavantamiva vyādhiḥ puruṣaṁ vṛddhaśīlinam.
4. na tvām evamvidhaḥ bhāvaḥ spraṣṭum arhati māanada
| ātmavantam iva vyādhiḥ puruṣam vṛddhaśīlinam
4. O honorable one (mānada), such a state of mind should not afflict you, just as a disease does not afflict a man who is self-controlled (ātman) and possesses a mature character.
प्रवृत्तिरुपलब्धा ते वैदेह्या रावणस्य च ।
तां त्वं पुरुषकारेण बुद्ध्या चैवोपपादय ॥५॥
5. pravṛttirupalabdhā te vaidehyā rāvaṇasya ca ,
tāṁ tvaṁ puruṣakāreṇa buddhyā caivopapādaya.
5. pravṛttiḥ upalabdhā te vaidehyā rāvaṇasya ca |
tām tvam puruṣakāreṇa buddhyā ca eva upapāday
5. You have obtained information concerning Vaidehī (Sītā) and Rāvaṇa. Now, you should accomplish your objective by human effort (puruṣakāreṇa) and indeed by your intelligence.
अभिगच्छाव सुग्रीवं शैलस्थं हरिपुंगवम् ।
मयि शिष्ये च भृत्ये च सहाये च समाश्वस ॥६॥
6. abhigacchāva sugrīvaṁ śailasthaṁ haripuṁgavam ,
mayi śiṣye ca bhṛtye ca sahāye ca samāśvasa.
6. abhigacchāva sugrīvaṃ śailasthaṃ haripuṅgavam
mayi śiṣye ca bhṛtye ca sahāye ca samāśvasa
6. Let us approach Sugrīva, the chief among monkeys, who is residing on the mountain. Be reassured by me, considering me your disciple, servant, and helper.
एवं बहुविधैर्वाक्यैर्लक्ष्मणेन स राघवः ।
उक्तः प्रकृतिमापेदे कार्ये चानन्तरोऽभवत् ॥७॥
7. evaṁ bahuvidhairvākyairlakṣmaṇena sa rāghavaḥ ,
uktaḥ prakṛtimāpede kārye cānantaro'bhavat.
7. evaṃ bahuvidhaiḥ vākyaiḥ lakṣmaṇena sa rāghavaḥ
uktaḥ prakṛtiṃ āpede kārye ca anantaraḥ abhavat
7. Being thus addressed by Lakṣmaṇa with many kinds of words, Rāghava regained his natural state (prakṛti) and immediately became engaged in the task.
निषेव्य वारि पम्पायास्तर्पयित्वा पितॄनपि ।
प्रतस्थतुरुभौ वीरौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥८॥
8. niṣevya vāri pampāyāstarpayitvā pitṝnapi ,
pratasthaturubhau vīrau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau.
8. niṣevya vāri pampāyāḥ tarpayitvā pitṝn api
pratasthetuḥ ubhau vīrau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau
8. After drinking the water of Pampā and offering libations to their ancestors (pitṝn), both heroic brothers, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa, set out.
तावृश्यमूकमभ्येत्य बहुमूलफलं गिरिम् ।
गिर्यग्रे वानरान्पञ्च वीरौ ददृशतुस्तदा ॥९॥
9. tāvṛśyamūkamabhyetya bahumūlaphalaṁ girim ,
giryagre vānarānpañca vīrau dadṛśatustadā.
9. tau ṛśyamūkam abhyetya bahumūlaphalaṃ girim
giryagre vānarān pañca vīrau dadṛśatuḥ tadā
9. Then, those two heroes, having reached the Ṛṣyamūka mountain, which was abundant with roots and fruits, saw five monkeys on its peak.
सुग्रीवः प्रेषयामास सचिवं वानरं तयोः ।
बुद्धिमन्तं हनूमन्तं हिमवन्तमिव स्थितम् ॥१०॥
10. sugrīvaḥ preṣayāmāsa sacivaṁ vānaraṁ tayoḥ ,
buddhimantaṁ hanūmantaṁ himavantamiva sthitam.
10. sugrīvaḥ preṣayāmāsa sacivaṃ vānaraṃ tayoḥ
buddhimantaṃ hanūmantaṃ himavantam iva sthitam
10. Sugriva sent his intelligent monkey minister, Hanuman, to them; Hanuman was as firm as the Himalayas.
तेन संभाष्य पूर्वं तौ सुग्रीवमभिजग्मतुः ।
सख्यं वानरराजेन चक्रे रामस्ततो नृप ॥११॥
11. tena saṁbhāṣya pūrvaṁ tau sugrīvamabhijagmatuḥ ,
sakhyaṁ vānararājena cakre rāmastato nṛpa.
11. tena sambhāṣya pūrvaṃ tau sugrīvaṃ abhi jagmatuḥ
sakhyaṃ vānararājena cakre rāmaḥ tataḥ nṛpa
11. After they had first conversed with him (Hanuman), those two (Rama and Lakshmana) approached Sugriva. Then, O king, Rama forged a friendship with the king of monkeys.
तद्वासो दर्शयामासुस्तस्य कार्ये निवेदिते ।
वानराणां तु यत्सीता ह्रियमाणाभ्यवासृजत् ॥१२॥
12. tadvāso darśayāmāsustasya kārye nivedite ,
vānarāṇāṁ tu yatsītā hriyamāṇābhyavāsṛjat.
12. tat vāsaḥ darśayāmāsuḥ tasya kārye nivedite
vānarāṇāṃ tu yat sītā hriyamāṇā abhi ava asṛjat
12. When his (Sugriva's) objective was communicated, they showed him the garments that Sita had dropped among the monkeys while she was being abducted.
तत्प्रत्ययकरं लब्ध्वा सुग्रीवं प्लवगाधिपम् ।
पृथिव्यां वानरैश्वर्ये स्वयं रामोऽभ्यषेचयत् ॥१३॥
13. tatpratyayakaraṁ labdhvā sugrīvaṁ plavagādhipam ,
pṛthivyāṁ vānaraiśvarye svayaṁ rāmo'bhyaṣecayat.
13. tat pratyayakaraṃ labdhvā sugrīvaṃ plavagādhipam
pṛthivyāṃ vānaraiśvarye svayaṃ rāmaḥ abhi uṣecayat
13. Having received that evidence which brought conviction, Rama himself consecrated Sugriva, the lord of monkeys, as the sovereign of monkeys on the earth.
प्रतिजज्ञे च काकुत्स्थः समरे वालिनो वधम् ।
सुग्रीवश्चापि वैदेह्याः पुनरानयनं नृप ॥१४॥
14. pratijajñe ca kākutsthaḥ samare vālino vadham ,
sugrīvaścāpi vaidehyāḥ punarānayanaṁ nṛpa.
14. pratijajñe ca kākutsthaḥ samare vālinaḥ vadham
sugrīvaḥ ca api vaidehyāḥ punaḥ ānayanam nṛpa
14. And Rama, the descendant of Kakutstha, pledged to slay Vali in battle. King Sugriva, for his part, also promised the recovery of Sita, the princess of Videha.
इत्युक्त्वा समयं कृत्वा विश्वास्य च परस्परम् ।
अभ्येत्य सर्वे किष्किन्धां तस्थुर्युद्धाभिकाङ्क्षिणः ॥१५॥
15. ityuktvā samayaṁ kṛtvā viśvāsya ca parasparam ,
abhyetya sarve kiṣkindhāṁ tasthuryuddhābhikāṅkṣiṇaḥ.
15. iti uktvā samayam kṛtvā viśvāsya ca parasparam
abhyetya sarve kiṣkindhām tasthuḥ yuddhābhikāṅkṣiṇaḥ
15. Having thus spoken and made a compact, and having established mutual trust, all of them approached Kishkindha and remained there, eager for battle.
सुग्रीवः प्राप्य किष्किन्धां ननादौघनिभस्वनः ।
नास्य तन्ममृषे वाली तं तारा प्रत्यषेधयत् ॥१६॥
16. sugrīvaḥ prāpya kiṣkindhāṁ nanādaughanibhasvanaḥ ,
nāsya tanmamṛṣe vālī taṁ tārā pratyaṣedhayat.
16. sugrīvaḥ prāpya kiṣkindhām nanāda oghanibhasvanaḥ
na asya tat mamṛṣe vālī tam tārā pratyaṣedhayat
16. Having arrived at Kishkindha, Sugriva roared with a sound like a mighty torrent. Vali could not endure that roar of his, and Tara thereupon restrained him.
यथा नदति सुग्रीवो बलवानेष वानरः ।
मन्ये चाश्रयवान्प्राप्तो न त्वं निर्गन्तुमर्हसि ॥१७॥
17. yathā nadati sugrīvo balavāneṣa vānaraḥ ,
manye cāśrayavānprāpto na tvaṁ nirgantumarhasi.
17. yathā nadati sugrīvaḥ balavān eṣaḥ vānaraḥ manye
ca āśrayavān prāptaḥ na tvam nirgantum arhasi
17. (Tara said:) "Because this powerful monkey Sugriva roars, I believe he must have obtained powerful backing. You should not go out."
हेममाली ततो वाली तारां ताराधिपाननाम् ।
प्रोवाच वचनं वाग्मी तां वानरपतिः पतिः ॥१८॥
18. hemamālī tato vālī tārāṁ tārādhipānanām ,
provāca vacanaṁ vāgmī tāṁ vānarapatiḥ patiḥ.
18. hemamālī tataḥ vālī tārām tārādhipānanām
provāca vacanam vāgmī tām vānarapatiḥ patiḥ
18. Then, the eloquent Vali, lord of monkeys and her husband, who was adorned with a golden garland, spoke these words to Tara, whose face was like the moon.
सर्वभूतरुतज्ञा त्वं पश्य बुद्ध्या समन्विता ।
केनापाश्रयवान्प्राप्तो ममैष भ्रातृगन्धिकः ॥१९॥
19. sarvabhūtarutajñā tvaṁ paśya buddhyā samanvitā ,
kenāpāśrayavānprāpto mamaiṣa bhrātṛgandhikaḥ.
19. sarvabhūtarutajñā tvam paśya buddhyā samanvitā
kena apāśrayavān prāptaḥ mama eṣaḥ bhrātṛgandhikaḥ
19. You, who understand the sounds of all creatures and possess wisdom, discern: Who is this person, resembling my brother, who has come seeking refuge?
चिन्तयित्वा मुहूर्तं तु तारा ताराधिपप्रभा ।
पतिमित्यब्रवीत्प्राज्ञा शृणु सर्वं कपीश्वर ॥२०॥
20. cintayitvā muhūrtaṁ tu tārā tārādhipaprabhā ,
patimityabravītprājñā śṛṇu sarvaṁ kapīśvara.
20. cintayitvā muhūrtam tu tārā tārādhipaprabhā
patim iti abravīt prājñā śṛṇu sarvam kapīśvara
20. Having reflected for a moment, the wise Tara, whose radiance was like that of the moon, spoke to her husband thus: 'Listen to everything, O lord of monkeys!'
हृतदारो महासत्त्वो रामो दशरथात्मजः ।
तुल्यारिमित्रतां प्राप्तः सुग्रीवेण धनुर्धरः ॥२१॥
21. hṛtadāro mahāsattvo rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ ,
tulyārimitratāṁ prāptaḥ sugrīveṇa dhanurdharaḥ.
21. hṛtadāraḥ mahāsattvaḥ rāmaḥ daśarathātmajaḥ
tulyārimitratām prāptaḥ sugrīveṇa dhanurdharaḥ
21. Rama, the mighty archer and son of Dasaratha (lit. 'born from the self [ātman] of Dasaratha'), whose wife was abducted, has formed an alliance (lit. 'attained a state of common enemies and friends') with Sugriva.
भ्राता चास्य महाबाहुः सौमित्रिरपराजितः ।
लक्ष्मणो नाम मेधावी स्थितः कार्यार्थसिद्धये ॥२२॥
22. bhrātā cāsya mahābāhuḥ saumitriraparājitaḥ ,
lakṣmaṇo nāma medhāvī sthitaḥ kāryārthasiddhaye.
22. bhrātā ca asya mahābāhuḥ saumitriḥ aparājitaḥ
lakṣmaṇaḥ nāma medhāvī sthitaḥ kāryārthasiddhaye
22. And his mighty-armed, unconquered, intelligent brother, named Lakṣmaṇa, the son of Sumitrā (Saumitri), is present to ensure the fulfillment of objectives.
मैन्दश्च द्विविदश्चैव हनूमांश्चानिलात्मजः ।
जाम्बवानृक्षराजश्च सुग्रीवसचिवाः स्थिताः ॥२३॥
23. maindaśca dvividaścaiva hanūmāṁścānilātmajaḥ ,
jāmbavānṛkṣarājaśca sugrīvasacivāḥ sthitāḥ.
23. maindaḥ ca dvividaḥ ca eva hanumān ca anilātmajaḥ
jāmbavān ṛkṣarājaḥ ca sugrīvasacivāḥ sthitāḥ
23. Maīnda, Dvivida, and Hanūmān, the son of the Wind god (Anila), along with Jāmbavān, the king of the bears, are present as Sugrīva's ministers.
सर्व एते महात्मानो बुद्धिमन्तो महाबलाः ।
अलं तव विनाशाय रामवीर्यव्यपाश्रयात् ॥२४॥
24. sarva ete mahātmāno buddhimanto mahābalāḥ ,
alaṁ tava vināśāya rāmavīryavyapāśrayāt.
24. sarve ete mahātmānaḥ buddhimantaḥ mahābalāḥ
alam tava vināśāya rāmavīryavyapāśrayāt
24. All these great-souled, intelligent, and immensely powerful beings, by relying on Rāma's valor, are more than sufficient for your destruction.
तस्यास्तदाक्षिप्य वचो हितमुक्तं कपीश्वरः ।
पर्यशङ्कत तामीर्षुः सुग्रीवगतमानसाम् ॥२५॥
25. tasyāstadākṣipya vaco hitamuktaṁ kapīśvaraḥ ,
paryaśaṅkata tāmīrṣuḥ sugrīvagatamānasām.
25. tasyāḥ tadā ākṣipya vacaḥ hitam uktam kapīśvaraḥ
paryaśaṅkata tām īrṣuḥ sugrīvagatamanasām
25. Then, the jealous lord of monkeys (Vāli), having scorned her beneficial words that had been spoken, suspected her (Tārā) of having her mind fixed on Sugrīva.
तारां परुषमुक्त्वा स निर्जगाम गुहामुखात् ।
स्थितं माल्यवतोऽभ्याशे सुग्रीवं सोऽभ्यभाषत ॥२६॥
26. tārāṁ paruṣamuktvā sa nirjagāma guhāmukhāt ,
sthitaṁ mālyavato'bhyāśe sugrīvaṁ so'bhyabhāṣata.
26. tārām paruṣam uktvā saḥ nirjagāma guhāmukhāt
sthitam mālyavataḥ abhyāśe sugrīvam saḥ abhyabhāṣata
26. Having spoken harshly to Tara, he exited from the mouth of the cave. He then addressed Sugriva, who was standing near Malyavan.
असकृत्त्वं मया मूढ निर्जितो जीवितप्रियः ।
मुक्तो ज्ञातिरिति ज्ञात्वा का त्वरा मरणे पुनः ॥२७॥
27. asakṛttvaṁ mayā mūḍha nirjito jīvitapriyaḥ ,
mukto jñātiriti jñātvā kā tvarā maraṇe punaḥ.
27. asakṛt tvam mayā mūḍha nirjitaḥ jīvitapriyaḥ
muktaḥ jñātiḥ iti jñātvā kā tvarā maraṇe punaḥ
27. O foolish one, you who love your life, have been defeated by me many times. Knowing that you are a relative, you were released. Why again this haste towards death?
इत्युक्तः प्राह सुग्रीवो भ्रातरं हेतुमद्वचः ।
प्राप्तकालममित्रघ्नो रामं संबोधयन्निव ॥२८॥
28. ityuktaḥ prāha sugrīvo bhrātaraṁ hetumadvacaḥ ,
prāptakālamamitraghno rāmaṁ saṁbodhayanniva.
28. iti uktaḥ prāha sugrīvaḥ bhrātaram hetumat vacaḥ
prāptakālam amitraghnaḥ rāmam saṃbodhayan iva
28. Thus addressed, Sugriva spoke reasoned words to his brother. It was as if Sugriva, the slayer of enemies, was instructing Rama at an opportune moment.
हृतदारस्य मे राजन्हृतराज्यस्य च त्वया ।
किं नु जीवितसामर्थ्यमिति विद्धि समागतम् ॥२९॥
29. hṛtadārasya me rājanhṛtarājyasya ca tvayā ,
kiṁ nu jīvitasāmarthyamiti viddhi samāgatam.
29. hṛtadārasya me rājan hṛtarājyasya ca tvayā
kim nu jīvitasāmarthyam iti viddhi samāgatam
29. O king, my wife has been abducted and my kingdom seized by you. What indeed is the purpose of my life? Know that this situation has befallen me.
एवमुक्त्वा बहुविधं ततस्तौ संनिपेततुः ।
समरे वालिसुग्रीवौ शालतालशिलायुधौ ॥३०॥
30. evamuktvā bahuvidhaṁ tatastau saṁnipetatuḥ ,
samare vālisugrīvau śālatālaśilāyudhau.
30. evam uktvā bahuvidham tataḥ tau saṃnipetatuḥ
samare vālisugrīvau śālatālaśilāyudhau
30. Thus having spoken in many ways, those two, Vali and Sugriva, who wielded śāla trees, tāla trees, and rocks as weapons, then clashed in battle.
उभौ जघ्नतुरन्योन्यमुभौ भूमौ निपेततुः ।
उभौ ववल्गतुश्चित्रं मुष्टिभिश्च निजघ्नतुः ॥३१॥
31. ubhau jaghnaturanyonyamubhau bhūmau nipetatuḥ ,
ubhau vavalgatuścitraṁ muṣṭibhiśca nijaghnatuḥ.
31. ubhau jaghṇatuḥ anyonyam ubhau bhūmau nipetatuḥ
ubhau vavalgatuḥ citram muṣṭibhiḥ ca nijaghṇatuḥ
31. Both struck each other, and both fell to the ground. Both leaped wonderfully, and they struck each other with fists.
उभौ रुधिरसंसिक्तौ नखदन्तपरिक्षतौ ।
शुशुभाते तदा वीरौ पुष्पिताविव किंशुकौ ॥३२॥
32. ubhau rudhirasaṁsiktau nakhadantaparikṣatau ,
śuśubhāte tadā vīrau puṣpitāviva kiṁśukau.
32. ubhau rudhirasaṃsiktāu nakhadantaparikṣatau
śuśubhāte tadā vīrau puṣpitāu iva kiṃśukāu
32. Both, soaked in blood and wounded by nails and teeth, then shone like two flowering Kimśuka trees.
न विशेषस्तयोर्युद्धे तदा कश्चन दृश्यते ।
सुग्रीवस्य तदा मालां हनूमान्कण्ठ आसजत् ॥३३॥
33. na viśeṣastayoryuddhe tadā kaścana dṛśyate ,
sugrīvasya tadā mālāṁ hanūmānkaṇṭha āsajat.
33. na viśeṣaḥ tayoḥ yuddhe tadā kaścana dṛśyate
sugrīvasya tadā mālām hanūmān kaṇṭha āsajat
33. At that time, no distinction was visible in the battle between those two. Then Hanuman placed a garland on Sugriva's neck.
स मालया तदा वीरः शुशुभे कण्ठसक्तया ।
श्रीमानिव महाशैलो मलयो मेघमालया ॥३४॥
34. sa mālayā tadā vīraḥ śuśubhe kaṇṭhasaktayā ,
śrīmāniva mahāśailo malayo meghamālayā.
34. saḥ mālayā tadā vīraḥ śuśubhe kaṇṭhasaktayā
śrīmān iva mahāśailaḥ malayaḥ meghamālayā
34. Then, that valiant hero shone, adorned with a garland around his neck, just like the glorious great Malaya mountain shines with a garland of clouds.
कृतचिह्नं तु सुग्रीवं रामो दृष्ट्वा महाधनुः ।
विचकर्ष धनुःश्रेष्ठं वालिमुद्दिश्य लक्ष्यवत् ॥३५॥
35. kṛtacihnaṁ tu sugrīvaṁ rāmo dṛṣṭvā mahādhanuḥ ,
vicakarṣa dhanuḥśreṣṭhaṁ vālimuddiśya lakṣyavat.
35. kṛtacinham tu sugrīvam rāmaḥ dṛṣṭvā mahādhanuḥ
vicakarṣa dhanuḥśreṣṭham vālim uddiśya lakṣyavat
35. But Rama, the great archer, seeing Sugriva, who was marked with a sign, drew his excellent bow, aiming at Vali as if at a target.
विस्फारस्तस्य धनुषो यन्त्रस्येव तदा बभौ ।
वितत्रास तदा वाली शरेणाभिहतो हृदि ॥३६॥
36. visphārastasya dhanuṣo yantrasyeva tadā babhau ,
vitatrāsa tadā vālī śareṇābhihato hṛdi.
36. visphāraḥ tasya dhanuṣaḥ yantrasya iva tadā
babhau vitatrāsa tadā vālī śareṇa abhihataḥ hṛdi
36. Then, the twang of his bow resonated like the sound of a machine. At that moment, Vali, struck in the heart by the arrow, trembled.
स भिन्नमर्माभिहतो वक्त्राच्छोणितमुद्वमन् ।
ददर्शावस्थितं राममारात्सौमित्रिणा सह ॥३७॥
37. sa bhinnamarmābhihato vaktrācchoṇitamudvaman ,
dadarśāvasthitaṁ rāmamārātsaumitriṇā saha.
37. saḥ bhinnamarmābhihataḥ vaktrāt śoṇitam udvaman
dadarśa avasthitam rāmam ārāt saumitriṇā saha
37. He (Vali), struck with his vital organs pierced and disgorging blood from his mouth, saw Rama standing close by, accompanied by Lakshmana.
गर्हयित्वा स काकुत्स्थं पपात भुवि मूर्छितः ।
तारा ददर्श तं भूमौ तारापतिमिव च्युतम् ॥३८॥
38. garhayitvā sa kākutsthaṁ papāta bhuvi mūrchitaḥ ,
tārā dadarśa taṁ bhūmau tārāpatimiva cyutam.

38. Having reproached Rama (Kākutstha), he fell unconscious to the ground. Tara saw him on the ground, like the fallen moon (the lord of stars).
हते वालिनि सुग्रीवः किष्किन्धां प्रत्यपद्यत ।
तां च तारापतिमुखीं तारां निपतितेश्वराम् ॥३९॥
39. hate vālini sugrīvaḥ kiṣkindhāṁ pratyapadyata ,
tāṁ ca tārāpatimukhīṁ tārāṁ nipatiteśvarām.

39. With Valin slain, Sugriva took possession of Kishkindha, and he also took Tara, whose face resembled the moon (tārāpati), and whose lord (husband) had fallen.
रामस्तु चतुरो मासान्पृष्ठे माल्यवतः शुभे ।
निवासमकरोद्धीमान्सुग्रीवेणाभ्युपस्थितः ॥४०॥
40. rāmastu caturo māsānpṛṣṭhe mālyavataḥ śubhe ,
nivāsamakaroddhīmānsugrīveṇābhyupasthitaḥ.
40. rāmaḥ tu caturaḥ māsān pṛṣṭhe mālyavataḥ śubhe
nivāsam akarot dhīmān sugrīveṇa abhyupasthitaḥ
40. But the wise Rama made his dwelling for four months on the beautiful Malyavan peak, accompanied by Sugriva.
रावणोऽपि पुरीं गत्वा लङ्कां कामबलात्कृतः ।
सीतां निवेशयामास भवने नन्दनोपमे ।
अशोकवनिकाभ्याशे तापसाश्रमसंनिभे ॥४१॥
41. rāvaṇo'pi purīṁ gatvā laṅkāṁ kāmabalātkṛtaḥ ,
sītāṁ niveśayāmāsa bhavane nandanopame ,
aśokavanikābhyāśe tāpasāśramasaṁnibhe.

41. Ravana, too, compelled by the force of desire, went to his city, Lanka. He then placed Sita in a palace that resembled the Nandana garden, near the Ashoka grove, which itself was like a hermitage (āśrama).
भर्तृस्मरणतन्वङ्गी तापसीवेषधारिणी ।
उपवासतपःशीला तत्र सा पृथुलेक्षणा ।
उवास दुःखवसतीः फलमूलकृताशना ॥४२॥
42. bhartṛsmaraṇatanvaṅgī tāpasīveṣadhāriṇī ,
upavāsatapaḥśīlā tatra sā pṛthulekṣaṇā ,
uvāsa duḥkhavasatīḥ phalamūlakṛtāśanā.

42. There, she, with slender limbs due to the remembrance of her husband (bhartṛsmaraṇa), wearing the garb of a female ascetic (tāpasī), and dedicated to fasting and ascetic practices (tapas), the broad-eyed one, lived in miserable dwellings, subsisting on fruits and roots as her food.
दिदेश राक्षसीस्तत्र रक्षणे राक्षसाधिपः ।
प्रासासिशूलपरशुमुद्गरालातधारिणीः ॥४३॥
43. dideśa rākṣasīstatra rakṣaṇe rākṣasādhipaḥ ,
prāsāsiśūlaparaśumudgarālātadhāriṇīḥ.

43. There, the lord of demons (rākṣasādhipaḥ) commanded demonesses for guarding, who were wielding spears, swords, pikes, axes, clubs, and firebrands.
द्व्यक्षीं त्र्यक्षीं ललाटाक्षीं दीर्घजिह्वामजिह्विकाम् ।
त्रिस्तनीमेकपादां च त्रिजटामेकलोचनाम् ॥४४॥
44. dvyakṣīṁ tryakṣīṁ lalāṭākṣīṁ dīrghajihvāmajihvikām ,
tristanīmekapādāṁ ca trijaṭāmekalocanām.
44. dvyakṣīm tryakṣīm lalāṭākṣīm dīrghajihvām
ajihvikām tristnīm ekapādām ca trijaṭām ekalocanām
44. (He commanded demonesses who were) two-eyed, three-eyed, forehead-eyed, long-tongued, tongueless, three-breasted, one-footed, and also Trijatā, the one-eyed demoness.
एताश्चान्याश्च दीप्ताक्ष्यः करभोत्कटमूर्धजाः ।
परिवार्यासते सीतां दिवारात्रमतन्द्रिताः ॥४५॥
45. etāścānyāśca dīptākṣyaḥ karabhotkaṭamūrdhajāḥ ,
parivāryāsate sītāṁ divārātramatandritāḥ.
45. etāḥ ca anyāḥ ca dīptākṣyaḥ karabhotkaṭamūrdhajāḥ
parivārya āsate sītām divārātram atandritāḥ
45. And these, as well as other demonesses, with glaring eyes and fierce, camel-like hair, vigilantly sit surrounding Sītā day and night.
तास्तु तामायतापाङ्गीं पिशाच्यो दारुणस्वनाः ।
तर्जयन्ति सदा रौद्राः परुषव्यञ्जनाक्षराः ॥४६॥
46. tāstu tāmāyatāpāṅgīṁ piśācyo dāruṇasvanāḥ ,
tarjayanti sadā raudrāḥ paruṣavyañjanākṣarāḥ.
46. ताः तु ताम् आयतापाङ्गीम् पिशाच्यः दारुणस्वनाः
तर्जयन्ति सदा रौद्राः परुषव्यञ्जनाक्षराः
46. But those fierce female demons (piśācyaḥ), perpetually uttering harsh and dreadful sounds, constantly threatened her, who had long and lovely eyes, with their cruel words.
खादाम पाटयामैनां तिलशः प्रविभज्य ताम् ।
येयं भर्तारमस्माकमवमन्येह जीवति ॥४७॥
47. khādāma pāṭayāmaināṁ tilaśaḥ pravibhajya tām ,
yeyaṁ bhartāramasmākamavamanyeha jīvati.
47. खादाम पाटयाम एनाम् तिलशः प्रविभज्य ताम्
या इयम् भर्तारम् अस्माकम् अवमन्य इह जीवति
47. Let us eat her! Let us tear her to pieces, dividing her into tiny portions, this one who lives here disrespecting our master (bhartāram).
इत्येवं परिभर्त्सन्तीस्त्रास्यमाना पुनः पुनः ।
भर्तृशोकसमाविष्टा निःश्वस्येदमुवाच ताः ॥४८॥
48. ityevaṁ paribhartsantīstrāsyamānā punaḥ punaḥ ,
bhartṛśokasamāviṣṭā niḥśvasyedamuvāca tāḥ.
48. इति एवम् परिभर्त्सन्तीः त्रास्यमाना पुनः पुनः
भर्तृशोकसमाविष्टा निःश्वस्य इदम् उवाच ताः
48. Being thus repeatedly threatened and terrified, she, overwhelmed by sorrow for her husband (bhartṛśoka), sighed and spoke these words to them.
आर्याः खादत मां शीघ्रं न मे लोभोऽस्ति जीविते ।
विना तं पुण्डरीकाक्षं नीलकुञ्चितमूर्धजम् ॥४९॥
49. āryāḥ khādata māṁ śīghraṁ na me lobho'sti jīvite ,
vinā taṁ puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ nīlakuñcitamūrdhajam.
49. आर्याः खादत माम् शीघ्रम् न मे लोभः अस्ति जीविते
विना तम् पुण्डरीकाक्षम् नीलकुञ्चितमूर्धजम्
49. O esteemed ones, eat me quickly. I have no desire for life (jīvite) without him, the lotus-eyed one (puṇḍarīkākṣam) with dark, curly hair.
अप्येवाहं निराहारा जीवितप्रियवर्जिता ।
शोषयिष्यामि गात्राणि व्याली तालगता यथा ॥५०॥
50. apyevāhaṁ nirāhārā jīvitapriyavarjitā ,
śoṣayiṣyāmi gātrāṇi vyālī tālagatā yathā.
50. api eva aham nirāhārā jīvitapriyavarjitā
śoṣayiṣyāmi gātrāṇi vyālī tālagatā yathā
50. Even I, without food and deprived of my life and my beloved (Rāma), will make my body waste away, just like a female serpent caught in a palm tree.
न त्वन्यमभिगच्छेयं पुमांसं राघवादृते ।
इति जानीत सत्यं मे क्रियतां यदनन्तरम् ॥५१॥
51. na tvanyamabhigaccheyaṁ pumāṁsaṁ rāghavādṛte ,
iti jānīta satyaṁ me kriyatāṁ yadanantaram.
51. na tu anyam abhigaccheyam pumāṃsam rāghavāt
ṛte iti jānīta satyam me kriyatām yat anantaram
51. But I would not approach any other man except for Rāghava. Know this to be my truth. Let whatever comes next be done.
तस्यास्तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राक्षस्यस्ताः खरस्वनाः ।
आख्यातुं राक्षसेन्द्राय जग्मुस्तत्सर्वमादितः ॥५२॥
52. tasyāstadvacanaṁ śrutvā rākṣasyastāḥ kharasvanāḥ ,
ākhyātuṁ rākṣasendrāya jagmustatsarvamāditaḥ.
52. tasyāḥ tat vacanam śrutvā rākṣasyaḥ tāḥ kharasvanāḥ
ākhyātum rākṣasendrāya jagmuḥ tat sarvam āditaḥ
52. Having heard her words, those harsh-voiced female demons went to the lord of rākṣasas (Rāvaṇa) to report all of that from the very beginning.
गतासु तासु सर्वासु त्रिजटा नाम राक्षसी ।
सान्त्वयामास वैदेहीं धर्मज्ञा प्रियवादिनी ॥५३॥
53. gatāsu tāsu sarvāsu trijaṭā nāma rākṣasī ,
sāntvayāmāsa vaidehīṁ dharmajñā priyavādinī.

53. When all those (other female demons) had departed, a female demon named Trijaṭā, who understood the natural law (dharma) and spoke kindly, comforted Vaidehī (Sītā).
सीते वक्ष्यामि ते किंचिद्विश्वासं कुरु मे सखि ।
भयं ते व्येतु वामोरु शृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥५४॥
54. sīte vakṣyāmi te kiṁcidviśvāsaṁ kuru me sakhi ,
bhayaṁ te vyetu vāmoru śṛṇu cedaṁ vaco mama.
54. sīte vakṣyāmi te kiṃcit viśvāsam kuru me sakhi
bhayam te vyetu vāmoru śṛṇu ca idam vacaḥ mama
54. Sita, I will tell you something; have faith in me, my friend. Let your fear vanish, O beautiful-thighed one. And listen to this word of mine.
अविन्ध्यो नाम मेधावी वृद्धो राक्षसपुंगवः ।
स रामस्य हितान्वेषी त्वदर्थे हि स मावदत् ॥५५॥
55. avindhyo nāma medhāvī vṛddho rākṣasapuṁgavaḥ ,
sa rāmasya hitānveṣī tvadarthe hi sa māvadat.
55. avindhyaḥ nāma medhāvī vṛddhaḥ rākṣasapuṃgavaḥ
saḥ rāmasya hitānveṣī tvadarthe hi saḥ mā avadat
55. A wise and aged leader among the rākṣasas, by the name of Avindhya, who was a seeker of Rama's welfare, indeed spoke to me on your behalf.
सीता मद्वचनाद्वाच्या समाश्वास्य प्रसाद्य च ।
भर्ता ते कुशली रामो लक्ष्मणानुगतो बली ॥५६॥
56. sītā madvacanādvācyā samāśvāsya prasādya ca ,
bhartā te kuśalī rāmo lakṣmaṇānugato balī.
56. sītā matvacanāt vācyā samāśvāsya prasādya ca
bhartā te kuśalī rāmaḥ lakṣmaṇānugataḥ balī
56. Sita should be addressed with my words, after having comforted and appeased her. Your husband, Rama, is well, accompanied by Lakshmana, and strong.
सख्यं वानरराजेन शक्रप्रतिमतेजसा ।
कृतवान्राघवः श्रीमांस्त्वदर्थे च समुद्यतः ॥५७॥
57. sakhyaṁ vānararājena śakrapratimatejasā ,
kṛtavānrāghavaḥ śrīmāṁstvadarthe ca samudyataḥ.
57. sakhyam vānararājena śakrapratimatejasā
kṛtavān rāghavaḥ śrīmān tvadarthe ca samudyataḥ
57. The glorious Rama (rāghavaḥ) has formed an alliance with the king of the monkeys, who possesses a splendor comparable to Indra. And he is now ready for your sake.
मा च तेऽस्तु भयं भीरु रावणाल्लोकगर्हितात् ।
नलकूबरशापेन रक्षिता ह्यस्यनिन्दिते ॥५८॥
58. mā ca te'stu bhayaṁ bhīru rāvaṇāllokagarhitāt ,
nalakūbaraśāpena rakṣitā hyasyanindite.
58. mā ca te astu bhayam bhīru rāvaṇāt lokagarhitāt
nalakūbaraśāpena rakṣitā hi asya anindite
58. And may you, O timid one, have no fear from Rāvaṇa, who is condemned by the world. For you are protected from him, O blameless one, by Nalakūbara's curse.
शप्तो ह्येष पुरा पापो वधूं रम्भां परामृशन् ।
न शक्तो विवशां नारीमुपैतुमजितेन्द्रियः ॥५९॥
59. śapto hyeṣa purā pāpo vadhūṁ rambhāṁ parāmṛśan ,
na śakto vivaśāṁ nārīmupaitumajitendriyaḥ.
59. śaptaḥ hi eṣaḥ purā pāpaḥ vadhūm rambhām parāmṛśan
na śaktaḥ vivaśām nārīm upaitum ajitendriyaḥ
59. For this wicked one was cursed long ago, when he violated his daughter-in-law, Rambhā. Being one who has not conquered his senses, he is now unable to approach a helpless woman.
क्षिप्रमेष्यति ते भर्ता सुग्रीवेणाभिरक्षितः ।
सौमित्रिसहितो धीमांस्त्वां चेतो मोक्षयिष्यति ॥६०॥
60. kṣiprameṣyati te bhartā sugrīveṇābhirakṣitaḥ ,
saumitrisahito dhīmāṁstvāṁ ceto mokṣayiṣyati.
60. kṣipram eṣyati te bhartā sugrīveṇa abhirakṣitaḥ
saumitrisahitaḥ dhīmān tvām cetaḥ mokṣayiṣyati
60. Your husband will quickly arrive, protected by Sugrīva. The wise one (Rāma), accompanied by Saumitri (Lakṣmaṇa), will surely liberate you from this place.
स्वप्ना हि सुमहाघोरा दृष्टा मेऽनिष्टदर्शनाः ।
विनाशायास्य दुर्बुद्धेः पौलस्त्यकुलघातिनः ॥६१॥
61. svapnā hi sumahāghorā dṛṣṭā me'niṣṭadarśanāḥ ,
vināśāyāsya durbuddheḥ paulastyakulaghātinaḥ.
61. svapnāḥ hi sumahāghorāḥ dṛṣṭāḥ me aniṣṭadarśanāḥ
vināśāya asya durbuddheḥ paulastyakulaghātinaḥ
61. Indeed, I have seen extremely dreadful dreams, which portend misfortune. These dreams are for the destruction of this wicked-minded one (Rāvaṇa), who is the destroyer of the Paulastya family.
दारुणो ह्येष दुष्टात्मा क्षुद्रकर्मा निशाचरः ।
स्वभावाच्छीलदोषेण सर्वेषां भयवर्धनः ॥६२॥
62. dāruṇo hyeṣa duṣṭātmā kṣudrakarmā niśācaraḥ ,
svabhāvācchīladoṣeṇa sarveṣāṁ bhayavardhanaḥ.
62. dāruṇaḥ hi eṣaḥ duṣṭātmā kṣudrakarmā niśācaraḥ
svabhāvāt śīladoṣeṇa sarveṣām bhayavardhanaḥ
62. This night-roaming demon (niśācara) is indeed cruel, evil-minded, and performs wicked deeds. By his very nature (svabhāva) and flaws in character, he increases fear in everyone.
स्पर्धते सर्वदेवैर्यः कालोपहतचेतनः ।
मया विनाशलिङ्गानि स्वप्ने दृष्टानि तस्य वै ॥६३॥
63. spardhate sarvadevairyaḥ kālopahatacetanaḥ ,
mayā vināśaliṅgāni svapne dṛṣṭāni tasya vai.
63. spardhate sarvadevaiḥ yaḥ kālopahatacetanaḥ
mayā vināśaliṅgāni svapne dṛṣṭāni tasya vai
63. He, whose consciousness is afflicted by time (kāla), rivals all the gods. I have indeed seen signs of his destruction in a dream.
तैलाभिषिक्तो विकचो मज्जन्पङ्के दशाननः ।
असकृत्खरयुक्ते तु रथे नृत्यन्निव स्थितः ॥६४॥
64. tailābhiṣikto vikaco majjanpaṅke daśānanaḥ ,
asakṛtkharayukte tu rathe nṛtyanniva sthitaḥ.
64. tailābhiṣiktaḥ vikacaḥ majjan paṅke daśānanaḥ
asakṛt kharayukte tu rathe nṛtyan iva sthitaḥ
64. The ten-headed demon (Daśānana) was seen anointed with oil, with disheveled hair, sinking in the mud. Moreover, he appeared as if dancing repeatedly in a chariot yoked with donkeys.
कुम्भकर्णादयश्चेमे नग्नाः पतितमूर्धजाः ।
कृष्यन्ते दक्षिणामाशां रक्तमाल्यानुलेपनाः ॥६५॥
65. kumbhakarṇādayaśceme nagnāḥ patitamūrdhajāḥ ,
kṛṣyante dakṣiṇāmāśāṁ raktamālyānulepanāḥ.
65. kumbhakarṇādayaḥ ca ime nagnāḥ patitamūrdhajāḥ
kṛṣyante dakṣiṇām āśām raktamālyānulepanāḥ
65. And these, Kumbhakarna and others, naked, with disheveled hair, and adorned with red garlands and unguents, are being dragged towards the southern direction.
श्वेतातपत्रः सोष्णीषः शुक्लमाल्यविभूषणः ।
श्वेतपर्वतमारूढ एक एव विभीषणः ॥६६॥
66. śvetātapatraḥ soṣṇīṣaḥ śuklamālyavibhūṣaṇaḥ ,
śvetaparvatamārūḍha eka eva vibhīṣaṇaḥ.

66. Vibhīṣaṇa, holding a white parasol, wearing a turban, and adorned with white garlands, was seen alone, having ascended the white mountain.
सचिवाश्चास्य चत्वारः शुक्लमाल्यानुलेपनाः ।
श्वेतपर्वतमारूढा मोक्ष्यन्तेऽस्मान्महाभयात् ॥६७॥
67. sacivāścāsya catvāraḥ śuklamālyānulepanāḥ ,
śvetaparvatamārūḍhā mokṣyante'smānmahābhayāt.
67. sacivāḥ ca asya catvāraḥ śuklamālyānulepanāḥ
śvetaparvatam ārūḍhāḥ mokṣyante asmān mahābhayāt
67. And his four ministers, adorned with white garlands and ointments, having ascended the white mountain, will deliver us from great danger.
रामस्यास्त्रेण पृथिवी परिक्षिप्ता ससागरा ।
यशसा पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां पूरयिष्यति ते पतिः ॥६८॥
68. rāmasyāstreṇa pṛthivī parikṣiptā sasāgarā ,
yaśasā pṛthivīṁ kṛtsnāṁ pūrayiṣyati te patiḥ.
68. rāmasya astreṇa pṛthivī parikṣiptā sasāgarā
yaśasā pṛthivīm kṛtsnām pūrayiṣyati te patiḥ
68. The earth with its oceans has been pervaded by Rāma's weapon. Your husband will fill the entire earth with his fame.
अस्थिसंचयमारूढो भुञ्जानो मधुपायसम् ।
लक्ष्मणश्च मया दृष्टो निरीक्षन्सर्वतो दिशः ॥६९॥
69. asthisaṁcayamārūḍho bhuñjāno madhupāyasam ,
lakṣmaṇaśca mayā dṛṣṭo nirīkṣansarvato diśaḥ.
69. asthisañcayam ārūḍhaḥ bhuñjānaḥ madhupāyasam
lakṣmaṇaḥ ca mayā dṛṣṭaḥ nirīkṣan sarvataḥ diśaḥ
69. I saw Lakṣmaṇa, who was sitting atop a pile of bones, eating honey-pudding, and looking in all directions.
रुदती रुधिरार्द्राङ्गी व्याघ्रेण परिरक्षिता ।
असकृत्त्वं मया दृष्टा गच्छन्ती दिशमुत्तराम् ॥७०॥
70. rudatī rudhirārdrāṅgī vyāghreṇa parirakṣitā ,
asakṛttvaṁ mayā dṛṣṭā gacchantī diśamuttarām.

asakṛt tvam mayā dṛṣṭā gacchantī diśam uttarām
70. I have seen you repeatedly, crying, with your limbs wet with blood, and protected by a tiger, as you journeyed towards the northern direction.
हर्षमेष्यसि वैदेहि क्षिप्रं भर्तृसमन्विता ।
राघवेण सह भ्रात्रा सीते त्वमचिरादिव ॥७१॥
71. harṣameṣyasi vaidehi kṣipraṁ bhartṛsamanvitā ,
rāghaveṇa saha bhrātrā sīte tvamacirādiva.
71. harṣam eṣyasi vaidehi kṣipram bhartṛsamanvitā
rāghaveṇa saha bhrātrā sīte tvam acirāt iva
71. O Vaidehī, you will quickly find joy, reunited with your husband Rāghava, along with his brother (Lakṣmaṇa). O Sītā, this will happen for you as if very soon.
इति सा मृगशावाक्षी तच्छ्रुत्वा त्रिजटावचः ।
बभूवाशावती बाला पुनर्भर्तृसमागमे ॥७२॥
72. iti sā mṛgaśāvākṣī tacchrutvā trijaṭāvacaḥ ,
babhūvāśāvatī bālā punarbhartṛsamāgame.
72. iti sā mṛgaśāvākṣī tat śrutvā trijaṭā vacaḥ
babhūva āśāvatī bālā punar bhartṛsamāgame
72. Thus, that doe-eyed young woman, having heard Trijaṭā's words, became hopeful again concerning reunion with her husband.
यावदभ्यागता रौद्राः पिशाच्यस्ताः सुदारुणाः ।
ददृशुस्तां त्रिजटया सहासीनां यथा पुरा ॥७३॥
73. yāvadabhyāgatā raudrāḥ piśācyastāḥ sudāruṇāḥ ,
dadṛśustāṁ trijaṭayā sahāsīnāṁ yathā purā.
73. yāvat abhyāgatāḥ raudrāḥ piśācyaḥ tāḥ sudāruṇāḥ
dadṛśuḥ tām trijaṭayā saha āsīnām yathā purā
73. Meanwhile, those fierce and extremely dreadful female demons arrived. They saw her, Sītā, sitting with Trijaṭā, just as she had been before.
