कर्ण उवाच ।
राधेयोऽहमाधिरथिः कर्णस्त्वामभिवादये ।
प्राप्ता किमर्थं भवती ब्रूहि किं करवाणि ते ॥१॥
1. karṇa uvāca ,
rādheyo'hamādhirathiḥ karṇastvāmabhivādaye ,
prāptā kimarthaṁ bhavatī brūhi kiṁ karavāṇi te.

abhivādaye prāptā kimartham bhavatī brūhi kim karavāṇi te

bhavatī kimartham prāptā (asi)? brūhi kim te karavāṇi?
1. Karna said: "I am Radheya, Adhiratha's son, Karna. I salute you. For what purpose have you arrived? Tell me, what may I do for you?"
कुन्त्युवाच ।
कौन्तेयस्त्वं न राधेयो न तवाधिरथः पिता ।
नासि सूतकुले जातः कर्ण तद्विद्धि मे वचः ॥२॥
2. kuntyuvāca ,
kaunteyastvaṁ na rādheyo na tavādhirathaḥ pitā ,
nāsi sūtakule jātaḥ karṇa tadviddhi me vacaḥ.
2. kuntī uvāca kaunteyaḥ tvam na rādheyaḥ na tava ādhirathaḥ
pitā na asi sūtakule jātaḥ karṇa tat viddhi me vacaḥ
2. kuntī uvāca karṇa,
tvam kaunteyaḥ (asi) na rādheyaḥ.
tava pitā na ādhirathaḥ.
na sūtakule jātaḥ asi.
tat me vacaḥ viddhi.
2. Kunti said: "You are Kaunteya, not Radheya. Adhiratha is not your father. You were not born in the Sūta (charioteer) family, Karna. Know this to be my word."
कानीनस्त्वं मया जातः पूर्वजः कुक्षिणा धृतः ।
कुन्तिभोजस्य भवने पार्थस्त्वमसि पुत्रक ॥३॥
3. kānīnastvaṁ mayā jātaḥ pūrvajaḥ kukṣiṇā dhṛtaḥ ,
kuntibhojasya bhavane pārthastvamasi putraka.
3. kānīnaḥ tvam mayā jātaḥ pūrvajaḥ kukṣiṇā dhṛtaḥ
kuntibhojasya bhavane pārthaḥ tvam asi putraka
3. putraka tvam mayā kānīnaḥ jātaḥ pūrvajaḥ kukṣiṇā
dhṛtaḥ tvam kuntibhojasya bhavane pārthaḥ asi
3. You are my son (kānīna), born of me before marriage, and you were carried in my womb as the elder. O son, you are [like] Pārtha (Arjuna), [who was raised] in Kuntibhoja's house.
प्रकाशकर्मा तपनो योऽयं देवो विरोचनः ।
अजीजनत्त्वां मय्येष कर्ण शस्त्रभृतां वरम् ॥४॥
4. prakāśakarmā tapano yo'yaṁ devo virocanaḥ ,
ajījanattvāṁ mayyeṣa karṇa śastrabhṛtāṁ varam.
4. prakāśakarmā tapanaḥ yaḥ ayam devaḥ virocanaḥ
ajījanat tvām mayi eṣaḥ karṇa śastrabṛtām varam
4. karṇa,
yaḥ ayam prakāśakarmā tapanaḥ virocanaḥ devaḥ,
eṣaḥ mayi śastrabṛtām varam tvām ajījanat
4. This radiant god, the scorching sun, whose actions are brilliant, he begot you in me. O Karna, (you are) the best among weapon-bearers.
कुण्डली बद्धकवचो देवगर्भः श्रिया वृतः ।
जातस्त्वमसि दुर्धर्ष मया पुत्र पितुर्गृहे ॥५॥
5. kuṇḍalī baddhakavaco devagarbhaḥ śriyā vṛtaḥ ,
jātastvamasi durdharṣa mayā putra piturgṛhe.
5. kuṇḍalī baddhakavacaḥ devagarbhaḥ śriyā vṛtaḥ
jātaḥ tvam asi durdharṣa mayā putra pituḥ gṛhe
5. putra durdharṣa,
tvam mayā kuṇḍalī baddhakavacaḥ devagarbhaḥ śriyā vṛtaḥ pituḥ gṛhe jātaḥ asi
5. O unconquerable son, you were born of me, adorned with earrings and wearing armor, of divine origin and endowed with splendor, in your father's house.
स त्वं भ्रातॄनसंबुद्ध्वा मोहाद्यदुपसेवसे ।
धार्तराष्ट्रान्न तद्युक्तं त्वयि पुत्र विशेषतः ॥६॥
6. sa tvaṁ bhrātṝnasaṁbuddhvā mohādyadupasevase ,
dhārtarāṣṭrānna tadyuktaṁ tvayi putra viśeṣataḥ.
6. saḥ tvam bhrātṝn asambuddhvā mohāt yat upasevase
dhārtarāṣṭrān na tat yuktam tvayi putra viśeṣataḥ
6. putra,
saḥ tvam mohāt bhrātṝn asambuddhvā yat dhārtarāṣṭrān upasevase,
tat tvayi viśeṣataḥ na yuktam
6. Therefore, O son, that you serve the Dhārtarāṣṭras (Kauravas) out of delusion (moha), without recognizing your brothers – that is not appropriate for you, especially.
एतद्धर्मफलं पुत्र नराणां धर्मनिश्चये ।
यत्तुष्यन्त्यस्य पितरो माता चाप्येकदर्शिनी ॥७॥
7. etaddharmaphalaṁ putra narāṇāṁ dharmaniścaye ,
yattuṣyantyasya pitaro mātā cāpyekadarśinī.
7. etat dharmaphalam putra narāṇām dharmaniścaye
yat tuṣyanti asya pitaraḥ mātā ca api ekadarśinī
7. putra narāṇām dharmaniścaye etat dharmaphalam
yat asya pitaraḥ ca ekadarśinī mātā api tuṣyanti
7. O son, this is the fruit of the constitution (dharma) for people who are resolute in their conviction regarding the constitution (dharma): that his ancestors and his mother, who also sees with a unified perspective, are pleased.
अर्जुनेनार्जितां पूर्वं हृतां लोभादसाधुभिः ।
आच्छिद्य धार्तराष्ट्रेभ्यो भुङ्क्ष्व यौधिष्ठिरीं श्रियम् ॥८॥
8. arjunenārjitāṁ pūrvaṁ hṛtāṁ lobhādasādhubhiḥ ,
ācchidya dhārtarāṣṭrebhyo bhuṅkṣva yaudhiṣṭhirīṁ śriyam.
8. arjunena arjitām pūrvam hṛtām lobhāt asādhubhiḥ ācchidya
dhārtarāṣṭrebhyaḥ bhuṅkṣva yaudhiṣṭhirīm śriyam
8. arjunena pūrvam arjitām lobhāt asādhubhiḥ hṛtām
yaudhiṣṭhirīm śriyam dhārtarāṣṭrebhyaḥ ācchidya bhuṅkṣva
8. Having snatched away from the Dhārtarāṣṭras the prosperity (śrī) belonging to Yudhiṣṭhira - which was formerly acquired by Arjuna but stolen out of greed by the wicked - enjoy it.
अद्य पश्यन्तु कुरवः कर्णार्जुनसमागमम् ।
सौभ्रात्रेण तदालक्ष्य संनमन्तामसाधवः ॥९॥
9. adya paśyantu kuravaḥ karṇārjunasamāgamam ,
saubhrātreṇa tadālakṣya saṁnamantāmasādhavaḥ.
9. adya paśyantu kuravaḥ karṇārjunasamāgamam
saubhrātreṇa tat ālakṣya sannamantām asādhavaḥ
9. adya kuravaḥ karṇārjunasamāgamam paśyantu
saubhrātreṇa tat ālakṣya asādhavaḥ sannamantām
9. Today, let the Kurus observe the coming together of Karṇa and Arjuna. Having seen that (union) as a display of fraternal spirit, let the wicked (asādhu) submit.
कर्णार्जुनौ वै भवतां यथा रामजनार्दनौ ।
असाध्यं किं नु लोके स्याद्युवयोः सहितात्मनोः ॥१०॥
10. karṇārjunau vai bhavatāṁ yathā rāmajanārdanau ,
asādhyaṁ kiṁ nu loke syādyuvayoḥ sahitātmanoḥ.
10. karṇārjunau vai bhavatām yathā rāmajanārdanau
asādhyam kim nu loke syāt yuvayoḥ sahitātmanoḥ
10. karṇārjunau vai bhavatām yathā rāmajanārdanau
yuvayoḥ sahitātmanoḥ loke kim nu asādhyam syāt
10. Karṇa and Arjuna are truly like Rāma and Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa) for all of you. What, then, could be impossible in the world for you two, whose inner beings (ātman) are united?
कर्ण शोभिष्यसे नूनं पञ्चभिर्भ्रातृभिर्वृतः ।
वेदैः परिवृतो ब्रह्मा यथा वेदाङ्गपञ्चमैः ॥११॥
11. karṇa śobhiṣyase nūnaṁ pañcabhirbhrātṛbhirvṛtaḥ ,
vedaiḥ parivṛto brahmā yathā vedāṅgapañcamaiḥ.
11. karṇa śobhiṣyase nūnam pañcabhiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ vṛtaḥ
vedaiḥ parivṛtaḥ brahmā yathā vedāṅgapañcamaiḥ
11. karṇa nūnam pañcabhiḥ bhrātṛbhiḥ vṛtaḥ śobhiṣyase
yathā brahmā vedaiḥ vedāṅgapañcamaiḥ parivṛtaḥ
11. Karna, you will surely shine, surrounded by your five brothers, just as Brahma shines, surrounded by the Vedas and the five Vedangas (auxiliary sciences of the Vedas).
उपपन्नो गुणैः श्रेष्ठो ज्येष्ठः श्रेष्ठेषु बन्धुषु ।
सूतपुत्रेति मा शब्दः पार्थस्त्वमसि वीर्यवान् ॥१२॥
12. upapanno guṇaiḥ śreṣṭho jyeṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭheṣu bandhuṣu ,
sūtaputreti mā śabdaḥ pārthastvamasi vīryavān.
12. upapannaḥ guṇaiḥ śreṣṭhaḥ jyeṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭheṣu bandhuṣu
sūtaputra iti mā śabdaḥ pārthaḥ tvam asi vīryavān
12. tvam guṇaiḥ upapannaḥ śreṣṭhaḥ
jyeṣṭhaḥ śreṣṭheṣu bandhuṣu (asi)
(tvām) sūtaputra iti mā śabdaḥ
(astu) tvam vīryavān pārthaḥ asi
12. Endowed with excellent qualities, the eldest among your best relatives, do not let the word 'son of a charioteer' (sūtaputra) be associated with you. You are Pārtha, full of valor.
