Duryodhana, having merely smiled, scratched the earth with his foot. The ill-minded one stood without saying anything, somewhat downcast.

30.
O king, seeing Duryodhana thus disregarding (him) and scratching the earth, anger seized Maitreya.

That Maitreya, the foremost among sages, having fallen under the sway of anger and also impelled by fate, set his mind on cursing him.

Then, having sipped water for ritual purification, Maitreya, whose eyes were reddened by anger, cursed that wicked-minded son of Dhritarashtra (Duryodhana).

A great war, caused by your hostility, will arise, in which the powerful Bhima will break your thighs with blows from his mace.

When these words had been spoken, King Dhritarashtra appeased the sage, saying, "May this not come to pass!"

Maitreya said, "O king, if your son achieves peace, then, dear one, the curse will not come to pass. Otherwise, it will certainly manifest."

Vaiśampāyana said, "But that king, the father of Duryodhana, feeling embarrassed then, asked Maitreya, 'How was Kirmīra slain by Bhīma?'"

Maitreya said, "I will not speak, as you harbor envy (asūyā) and your son does not wish to listen. This Vidura will tell you everything after I have left."

Vaiśampāyana said, "Having spoken in this manner, Maitreya departed the way he had arrived. Distressed by the slaying of Kirmīra, Duryodhana went outside."
