उत्तर उवाच ।
सुवर्णविकृतानीमान्यायुधानि महात्मनाम् ।
रुचिराणि प्रकाशन्ते पार्थानामाशुकारिणाम् ॥१॥
1. uttara uvāca ,
suvarṇavikṛtānīmānyāyudhāni mahātmanām ,
rucirāṇi prakāśante pārthānāmāśukāriṇām.

1. Uttara said: These brilliant weapons, adorned with gold, belonging to those swift-acting Pārthas, the great souls, shine brightly.
क्व नु स्विदर्जुनः पार्थः कौरव्यो वा युधिष्ठिरः ।
नकुलः सहदेवश्च भीमसेनश्च पाण्डवः ॥२॥
2. kva nu svidarjunaḥ pārthaḥ kauravyo vā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
nakulaḥ sahadevaśca bhīmasenaśca pāṇḍavaḥ.
2. kva nu svit arjunaḥ pārthaḥ kauravyaḥ vā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ

2. Where, I wonder, are Arjuna, the son of Pṛthā, or Yudhiṣṭhira, the prince of the Kurus, along with Nakula, Sahadeva, and Bhīmasena, the sons of Pāṇḍu?
सर्व एव महात्मानः सर्वामित्रविनाशनाः ।
राज्यमक्षैः पराकीर्य न श्रूयन्ते कदाचन ॥३॥
3. sarva eva mahātmānaḥ sarvāmitravināśanāḥ ,
rājyamakṣaiḥ parākīrya na śrūyante kadācana.
3. sarve eva mahātmānaḥ sarvāmitravināśanāḥ |
rājyam akṣaiḥ parākīrya na śrūyante kadācana
3. All of them are great souls (mahātman), destroyers of all enemies. Yet, having gambled away their kingdom with dice, they are never heard of anywhere.
द्रौपदी क्व च पाञ्चाली स्त्रीरत्नमिति विश्रुता ।
जितानक्षैस्तदा कृष्णा तानेवान्वगमद्वनम् ॥४॥
4. draupadī kva ca pāñcālī strīratnamiti viśrutā ,
jitānakṣaistadā kṛṣṇā tānevānvagamadvanam.
4. draupadī kva ca pāñcālī strīratnam iti viśrutā |
jitān akṣaiḥ tadā kṛṣṇā tān eva anvagamat vanam
4. And where is Draupadī, the princess of Pañcāla, renowned as a jewel among women? Kṛṣṇā, having been lost by dice at that time, indeed followed them into the forest.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
अहमस्म्यर्जुनः पार्थः सभास्तारो युधिष्ठिरः ।
बल्लवो भीमसेनस्तु पितुस्ते रसपाचकः ॥५॥
5. arjuna uvāca ,
ahamasmyarjunaḥ pārthaḥ sabhāstāro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ,
ballavo bhīmasenastu pituste rasapācakaḥ.
5. arjunaḥ uvāca aham asmi arjunaḥ pārthaḥ sabhāstāraḥ
yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ballavaḥ bhīmasenaḥ tu pituḥ te rasapācakaḥ
5. Arjuna said: 'I am Arjuna, the son of Pritha. Yudhiṣṭhira is the courtier. Bhīmasena, however, is Ballava, your father's cook.'
अश्वबन्धोऽथ नकुलः सहदेवस्तु गोकुले ।
सैरन्ध्रीं द्रौपदीं विद्धि यत्कृते कीचका हताः ॥६॥
6. aśvabandho'tha nakulaḥ sahadevastu gokule ,
sairandhrīṁ draupadīṁ viddhi yatkṛte kīcakā hatāḥ.
6. aśvabandhaḥ atha nakulaḥ sahadevaḥ tu gokule
sairandhrīm draupadīm viddhi yat kṛte kīcakāḥ hatāḥ
6. And Nakula is the horse-keeper. Sahadeva, however, is in the cow-pen. Know Draupadī as Sairandhrī, for whose sake the Kīcakas were killed.
उत्तर उवाच ।
दश पार्थस्य नामानि यानि पूर्वं श्रुतानि मे ।
प्रब्रूयास्तानि यदि मे श्रद्दध्यां सर्वमेव ते ॥७॥
7. uttara uvāca ,
daśa pārthasya nāmāni yāni pūrvaṁ śrutāni me ,
prabrūyāstāni yadi me śraddadhyāṁ sarvameva te.
7. uttaraḥ uvāca daśa pārthasya nāmāni yāni pūrvam śrutāni
me prabrūyāḥ tāni yadi me śraddadhyām sarvam eva te
7. Uttara said: 'If you would tell me the ten names of Partha (Arjuna) which I have heard before, I would indeed believe all you say.'
अर्जुन उवाच ।
हन्त तेऽहं समाचक्षे दश नामानि यानि मे ।
अर्जुनः फल्गुनो जिष्णुः किरीटी श्वेतवाहनः ।
बीभत्सुर्विजयः कृष्णः सव्यसाची धनंजयः ॥८॥
8. arjuna uvāca ,
hanta te'haṁ samācakṣe daśa nāmāni yāni me ,
arjunaḥ phalguno jiṣṇuḥ kirīṭī śvetavāhanaḥ ,
bībhatsurvijayaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ savyasācī dhanaṁjayaḥ.
8. arjunaḥ uvāca hanta te aham samācakṣe
daśa nāmāni yāni me arjunaḥ phalgunaḥ
jiṣṇuḥ kirīṭī śvetavāhanaḥ bībhatsuḥ
vijayaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ savyasācī dhanañjayaḥ
8. Arjuna said: 'Indeed, I will tell you my ten names: Arjuna, Phalguna, Jiṣṇu, Kirīṭī, Śvetavāhana, Bībhatsu, Vijaya, Kṛṣṇa, Savyasācī, and Dhanañjaya.'
उत्तर उवाच ।
केनासि विजयो नाम केनासि श्वेतवाहनः ।
किरीटी नाम केनासि सव्यसाची कथं भवान् ॥९॥
9. uttara uvāca ,
kenāsi vijayo nāma kenāsi śvetavāhanaḥ ,
kirīṭī nāma kenāsi savyasācī kathaṁ bhavān.
9. uttaraḥ uvāca | kena asi vijayaḥ nāma | kena asi
śvetavāhanaḥ | kirīṭī nāma kena asi savyasācī katham bhavān
9. Uttara said: "By what reason are you named Vijaya? By what reason are you called Śvetavāhana? By what reason are you named Kiriṭī? How are you Savyasācī (ambidextrous)?"
अर्जुनः फल्गुनो जिष्णुः कृष्णो बीभत्सुरेव च ।
धनंजयश्च केनासि प्रब्रूहि मम तत्त्वतः ।
श्रुता मे तस्य वीरस्य केवला नामहेतवः ॥१०॥
10. arjunaḥ phalguno jiṣṇuḥ kṛṣṇo bībhatsureva ca ,
dhanaṁjayaśca kenāsi prabrūhi mama tattvataḥ ,
śrutā me tasya vīrasya kevalā nāmahetavaḥ.
10. arjunaḥ phalgunaḥ jiṣṇuḥ kṛṣṇaḥ
bībhatsuḥ eva ca | dhanaṃjayaḥ ca kena
asi prabrūhi mama tattvataḥ | śrutā
me tasya vīrasya kevalā nāmahetavaḥ
10. You are Arjuna, Phalguna, Jiṣṇu, Kṛṣṇa, and Bibhatsu, as well as Dhanañjaya. By what reasons are you called these? Please explain fully to me, for I have only heard the mere causes of that hero's names.
अर्जुन उवाच ।
सर्वाञ्जनपदाञ्जित्वा वित्तमाच्छिद्य केवलम् ।
मध्ये धनस्य तिष्ठामि तेनाहुर्मां धनंजयम् ॥११॥
11. arjuna uvāca ,
sarvāñjanapadāñjitvā vittamācchidya kevalam ,
madhye dhanasya tiṣṭhāmi tenāhurmāṁ dhanaṁjayam.
11. arjunaḥ uvāca | sarvān janapadān jitvā vittam ācchidya
kevalam | madhye dhanasya tiṣṭhāmi tena āhuḥ mām dhanaṃjayam
11. Arjuna said: "Having conquered all provinces and taken only their wealth, I stand amidst riches. Therefore, people call me Dhanañjaya."
अभिप्रयामि संग्रामे यदहं युद्धदुर्मदान् ।
नाजित्वा विनिवर्तामि तेन मां विजयं विदुः ॥१२॥
12. abhiprayāmi saṁgrāme yadahaṁ yuddhadurmadān ,
nājitvā vinivartāmi tena māṁ vijayaṁ viduḥ.
12. abhiprayāmi saṃgrāme yat aham yuddhadurmadān
| na ajitvā vinivartāmi tena mām vijayam viduḥ
12. Since I advance into battle against those fiercely arrogant in combat and do not return without conquering them, for that reason they call me Vijaya.
श्वेताः काञ्चनसंनाहा रथे युज्यन्ति मे हयाः ।
संग्रामे युध्यमानस्य तेनाहं श्वेतवाहनः ॥१३॥
13. śvetāḥ kāñcanasaṁnāhā rathe yujyanti me hayāḥ ,
saṁgrāme yudhyamānasya tenāhaṁ śvetavāhanaḥ.
13. śvetāḥ kāñcanasaṃnāhāḥ rathe yujyanti me hayāḥ
saṃgrāme yudhyamānasya tena aham śvetavāhanaḥ
13. My white horses, adorned with golden harnesses, are yoked to my chariot. Therefore, because I fight in battle, I am known as Śvetavāhana (one whose steeds are white).
उत्तराभ्यां च पूर्वाभ्यां फल्गुनीभ्यामहं दिवा ।
जातो हिमवतः पृष्ठे तेन मां फल्गुनं विदुः ॥१४॥
14. uttarābhyāṁ ca pūrvābhyāṁ phalgunībhyāmahaṁ divā ,
jāto himavataḥ pṛṣṭhe tena māṁ phalgunaṁ viduḥ.
14. uttarābhyām ca pūrvābhyām phalgunībhyām aham divā
jātaḥ himavataḥ pṛṣṭhe tena mām phalgunaṃ viduḥ
14. I was born on the peak of the Himalayas during the day, under the influence of both the earlier and later Phalguni constellations (nakṣatras). For this reason, they know me as Phalguna.
पुरा शक्रेण मे दत्तं युध्यतो दानवर्षभैः ।
किरीटं मूर्ध्नि सूर्याभं तेन माहुः किरीटिनम् ॥१५॥
15. purā śakreṇa me dattaṁ yudhyato dānavarṣabhaiḥ ,
kirīṭaṁ mūrdhni sūryābhaṁ tena māhuḥ kirīṭinam.
15. purā śakreṇa me dattaṃ yudhyataḥ dānavavarṣabhaiḥ
kirīṭaṃ mūrdhni sūryābhaṃ tena mām āhuḥ kirīṭinam
15. Formerly, when I was fighting the foremost Dānavas (demons), Indra (Śakra) gave me a sun-like diadem for my head. Therefore, they call me Kirīṭin (the crowned one).
न कुर्यां कर्म बीभत्सं युध्यमानः कथंचन ।
तेन देवमनुष्येषु बीभत्सुरिति मां विदुः ॥१६॥
16. na kuryāṁ karma bībhatsaṁ yudhyamānaḥ kathaṁcana ,
tena devamanuṣyeṣu bībhatsuriti māṁ viduḥ.
16. na kuryām karma bībhatsaṃ yudhyamānaḥ kathaṃcana
tena devamanuṣyeṣu bībhatsuḥ iti mām viduḥ
16. While fighting, I would never do any repulsive deed (karma) by any means. Therefore, among gods and humans, they know me as Bibhatsu (the one who abhors vile deeds).
उभौ मे दक्षिणौ पाणी गाण्डीवस्य विकर्षणे ।
तेन देवमनुष्येषु सव्यसाचीति मां विदुः ॥१७॥
17. ubhau me dakṣiṇau pāṇī gāṇḍīvasya vikarṣaṇe ,
tena devamanuṣyeṣu savyasācīti māṁ viduḥ.
17. ubhau me dakṣiṇau pāṇī gāṇḍīvasya vikarṣaṇe
tena devamānuṣyeṣu savyasācī iti mām viduḥ
17. Both my hands are equally adept at drawing the Gaṇḍīva bow. Therefore, among gods and humans, they know me as Savyasācī.
पृथिव्यां चतुरन्तायां वर्णो मे दुर्लभः समः ।
करोमि कर्म शुक्लं च तेन मामर्जुनं विदुः ॥१८॥
18. pṛthivyāṁ caturantāyāṁ varṇo me durlabhaḥ samaḥ ,
karomi karma śuklaṁ ca tena māmarjunaṁ viduḥ.
18. pṛthivyām caturantāyām varṇaḥ me durlabhaḥ samaḥ
karomi karma śuklam ca tena mām arjunam viduḥ
18. On this four-cornered earth, a complexion matching mine is rare. Also, I perform pure actions (karma). Therefore, they know me as Arjuna.
अहं दुरापो दुर्धर्षो दमनः पाकशासनिः ।
तेन देवमनुष्येषु जिष्णुनामास्मि विश्रुतः ॥१९॥
19. ahaṁ durāpo durdharṣo damanaḥ pākaśāsaniḥ ,
tena devamanuṣyeṣu jiṣṇunāmāsmi viśrutaḥ.
19. aham durāpaḥ durdharṣaḥ damanaḥ pākaśāsaniḥ
tena devamānuṣyeṣu jiṣṇunāma asmi viśrutaḥ
19. I am difficult to approach, unassailable, and a subduer; I am also the son of Indra (Pākaśāsana). Therefore, among gods and humans, I am renowned by the name Jiṣṇu.
कृष्ण इत्येव दशमं नाम चक्रे पिता मम ।
कृष्णावदातस्य सतः प्रियत्वाद्बालकस्य वै ॥२०॥
20. kṛṣṇa ityeva daśamaṁ nāma cakre pitā mama ,
kṛṣṇāvadātasya sataḥ priyatvādbālakasya vai.
20. kṛṣṇaḥ iti eva daśamam nāma cakre pitā mama
kṛṣṇāvadātasya sataḥ priyatvāt bālakasya vai
20. My father indeed gave me the tenth name, 'Kṛṣṇa,' due to his affection for the boy who possessed both dark and fair qualities.
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः पार्थं स वैराटिरभ्यवादयदन्तिकात् ।
अहं भूमिंजयो नाम नाम्नाहमपि चोत्तरः ॥२१॥
21. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ pārthaṁ sa vairāṭirabhyavādayadantikāt ,
ahaṁ bhūmiṁjayo nāma nāmnāhamapi cottaraḥ.
21. vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca tataḥ pārtham saḥ vairāṭiḥ abhyavādayat
antikāt aham bhūmiṃjayaḥ nāma nāmnā aham api ca uttaraḥ
21. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, that son of Virāṭa (Uttara) saluted Arjuna (Pārtha) from nearby. He said, "My name is Bhūmiñjaya, and I am also known by the name Uttara."
दिष्ट्या त्वां पार्थ पश्यामि स्वागतं ते धनंजय ।
लोहिताक्ष महाबाहो नागराजकरोपम ।
यदज्ञानादवोचं त्वां क्षन्तुमर्हसि तन्मम ॥२२॥
22. diṣṭyā tvāṁ pārtha paśyāmi svāgataṁ te dhanaṁjaya ,
lohitākṣa mahābāho nāgarājakaropama ,
yadajñānādavocaṁ tvāṁ kṣantumarhasi tanmama.
22. diṣṭyā tvām pārtha paśyāmi svāgatam
te dhanaṃjaya lohitākṣa mahābāho
nāgarājakaropama yat ajñānāt
avocam tvām kṣantum arhasi tat mama
22. Fortunately, O Pārtha, I see you! Welcome to you, O Dhanañjaya! O red-eyed one, O mighty-armed one, whose arms are like the trunks of a lordly elephant! Please forgive me for what I said to you out of ignorance.
यतस्त्वया कृतं पूर्वं विचित्रं कर्म दुष्करम् ।
अतो भयं व्यतीतं मे प्रीतिश्च परमा त्वयि ॥२३॥
23. yatastvayā kṛtaṁ pūrvaṁ vicitraṁ karma duṣkaram ,
ato bhayaṁ vyatītaṁ me prītiśca paramā tvayi.
23. yataḥ tvayā kṛtam pūrvam vicitram karma duṣkaram
ataḥ bhayam vyatītam me prītiḥ ca paramā tvayi
23. Since you have previously performed such a wonderful and arduous deed (karma), my fear has therefore vanished, and I have the highest affection for you.
