धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
अनुक्तं यदि ते किंचिद्वाचा विदुर विद्यते ।
तन्मे शुश्रूषवे ब्रूहि विचित्राणि हि भाषसे ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
anuktaṁ yadi te kiṁcidvācā vidura vidyate ,
tanme śuśrūṣave brūhi vicitrāṇi hi bhāṣase.
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca | anuktam yadi te kiñcit vācā vidura
vidyate | tat me śuśrūṣave brūhi vicitrāṇi hi bhāṣase
1. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "Vidura, if there is anything you have not yet spoken of, please tell it to me, for I desire to hear, and you indeed speak wondrously."
विदुर उवाच ।
धृतराष्ट्र कुमारो वै यः पुराणः सनातनः ।
सनत्सुजातः प्रोवाच मृत्युर्नास्तीति भारत ॥२॥
2. vidura uvāca ,
dhṛtarāṣṭra kumāro vai yaḥ purāṇaḥ sanātanaḥ ,
sanatsujātaḥ provāca mṛtyurnāstīti bhārata.
2. vidura uvāca | dhṛtarāṣṭra kumāraḥ vai yaḥ purāṇaḥ
sanātanaḥ | sanatsujātaḥ provāca mṛtyuḥ na asti iti bhārata
2. Vidura said: "O Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the ancient and eternal youth, Sanatsujāta, declared that death (mṛtyu) does not exist, O Bhārata!"
स ते गुह्यान्प्रकाशांश्च सर्वान्हृदयसंश्रयान् ।
प्रवक्ष्यति महाराज सर्वबुद्धिमतां वरः ॥३॥
3. sa te guhyānprakāśāṁśca sarvānhṛdayasaṁśrayān ,
pravakṣyati mahārāja sarvabuddhimatāṁ varaḥ.
3. sa te guhyān prakāśān ca sarvān hṛdayasaṃśrayān
| pravakṣyati mahārāja sarvabuddhimatām varaḥ
3. "O great king (mahārāja), he (Sanatsujāta), the best of all intelligent ones, will explain to you all the secret and manifest things that reside within your heart."
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
किं त्वं न वेद तद्भूयो यन्मे ब्रूयात्सनातनः ।
त्वमेव विदुर ब्रूहि प्रज्ञाशेषोऽस्ति चेत्तव ॥४॥
4. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
kiṁ tvaṁ na veda tadbhūyo yanme brūyātsanātanaḥ ,
tvameva vidura brūhi prajñāśeṣo'sti cettava.
4. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca | kim tvam na
veda tat bhūyaḥ yat me brūyāt
sanātanaḥ | tvam eva vidura
brūhi prajñāśeṣaḥ asti cet tava
4. Dhṛtarāṣṭra said: "What is it that you do not know, such that the eternal one (Sanatsujāta) would have to tell me more? Vidura, you yourself speak to me, if there is any remnant of wisdom (prajñā) left in you."
विदुर उवाच ।
शूद्रयोनावहं जातो नातोऽन्यद्वक्तुमुत्सहे ।
कुमारस्य तु या बुद्धिर्वेद तां शाश्वतीमहम् ॥५॥
5. vidura uvāca ,
śūdrayonāvahaṁ jāto nāto'nyadvaktumutsahe ,
kumārasya tu yā buddhirveda tāṁ śāśvatīmaham.
5. viduraḥ uvāca | śūdrayonau aham jātaḥ na ataḥ anyat vaktum
utsahe | kumārasya tu yā buddhiḥ veda tām śāśvatīm aham
5. Vidura said: "I am born in a śūdra womb, therefore I am not emboldened to speak anything else. However, I know that the intelligence (buddhi) of the young boy (Sanatsujāta) is eternal."
ब्राह्मीं हि योनिमापन्नः सुगुह्यमपि यो वदेत् ।
न तेन गर्ह्यो देवानां तस्मादेतद्ब्रवीमि ते ॥६॥
6. brāhmīṁ hi yonimāpannaḥ suguhyamapi yo vadet ,
na tena garhyo devānāṁ tasmādetadbravīmi te.
6. brāhmīm hi yonim āpannaḥ suguhyam api yaḥ vadet
| na tena garhyaḥ devānām tasmāt etat bravīmi te
6. Indeed, whoever, having attained a divine (brahman-related) birth, speaks even what is very secret, is not to be censured by the gods. Therefore, I tell you this.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
ब्रवीहि विदुर त्वं मे पुराणं तं सनातनम् ।
कथमेतेन देहेन स्यादिहैव समागमः ॥७॥
7. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
bravīhi vidura tvaṁ me purāṇaṁ taṁ sanātanam ,
kathametena dehena syādihaiva samāgamaḥ.
7. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca | bravīhi vidura tvam me purāṇam tam
sanātanam | katham etena dehena syāt iha eva samāgamaḥ
7. Dhritarashtra said: "Vidura, please tell me that ancient and eternal (sanātanam) teaching. How can union (samāgamaḥ) be achieved right here with this very body?"
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
चिन्तयामास विदुरस्तमृषिं संशितव्रतम् ।
स च तच्चिन्तितं ज्ञात्वा दर्शयामास भारत ॥८॥
8. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
cintayāmāsa vidurastamṛṣiṁ saṁśitavratam ,
sa ca taccintitaṁ jñātvā darśayāmāsa bhārata.
8. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca | cintayām āsa viduraḥ tam ṛṣim
saṃśitavratam | saḥ ca tat cintitam jñātvā darśayām āsa bhārata
8. Vaiśampāyana said: "Vidura pondered over that ascetic (ṛṣi) who had taken a firm vow. And the ascetic, knowing what he had pondered, revealed himself, O Bhārata."
स चैनं प्रतिजग्राह विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ।
सुखोपविष्टं विश्रान्तमथैनं विदुरोऽब्रवीत् ॥९॥
9. sa cainaṁ pratijagrāha vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā ,
sukhopaviṣṭaṁ viśrāntamathainaṁ viduro'bravīt.
9. saḥ ca enam pratijagrāha vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā
sukhopaviṣṭam viśrāntam atha enam viduraḥ abravīt
9. And he (Dhṛtarāṣṭra) received him (Sanatsujāta) with rites prescribed by tradition (dharma). After Sanatsujāta was comfortably seated and rested, Vidura then spoke to him.
भगवन्संशयः कश्चिद्धृतराष्ट्रस्य मानसे ।
यो न शक्यो मया वक्तुं तमस्मै वक्तुमर्हसि ।
यं श्रुत्वायं मनुष्येन्द्रः सुखदुःखातिगो भवेत् ॥१०॥
10. bhagavansaṁśayaḥ kaściddhṛtarāṣṭrasya mānase ,
yo na śakyo mayā vaktuṁ tamasmai vaktumarhasi ,
yaṁ śrutvāyaṁ manuṣyendraḥ sukhaduḥkhātigo bhavet.
10. bhagavan saṃśayaḥ kaścit dhṛtarāṣṭrasya
mānase yaḥ na śakyaḥ mayā vaktum
tam asmai vaktum arhasi yam śrutvā ayam
manuṣyendraḥ sukhaduḥkhātigaḥ bhavet
10. O Revered One, there is a certain doubt in Dhṛtarāṣṭra's mind that I am unable to articulate. You ought to speak about it to him, so that hearing it, this lord of men may transcend pleasure and pain.
लाभालाभौ प्रियद्वेष्यौ यथैनं न जरान्तकौ ।
विषहेरन्भयामर्षौ क्षुत्पिपासे मदोद्भवौ ।
अरतिश्चैव तन्द्री च कामक्रोधौ क्षयोदयौ ॥११॥
11. lābhālābhau priyadveṣyau yathainaṁ na jarāntakau ,
viṣaheranbhayāmarṣau kṣutpipāse madodbhavau ,
aratiścaiva tandrī ca kāmakrodhau kṣayodayau.
11. lābhālābhau priyadveṣyau yathā enam
na jarāntakau viṣaheran bhayāmarṣau
kṣutpipāse madodbhavau aratiḥ ca
eva tandrī ca kāmakrodhau kṣayodayau
11. So that gain and loss, liking and disliking, old age and death (antaka) do not overpower him. (May he also transcend) fear and indignation, hunger and thirst, arrogance and its manifestations, discontent and lethargy, desire and wrath, and the dualities of decline and prosperity.
