तथा गतेषु शूरेषु तेषां मम च संजय ।
किं वै भीमस्तदाकार्षीत्तन्ममाचक्ष्व संजय ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
tathā gateṣu śūreṣu teṣāṁ mama ca saṁjaya ,
kiṁ vai bhīmastadākārṣīttanmamācakṣva saṁjaya.

1. Dhritarashtra said: "O Sanjaya, when those heroes, both ours and theirs, had thus fallen, what indeed did Bhima do then? Please narrate that to me, O Sanjaya."
संजय उवाच ।
विरथो भीमसेनो वै कर्णवाक्शल्यपीडितः ।
अमर्षवशमापन्नः फल्गुनं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥२॥
2. saṁjaya uvāca ,
viratho bhīmaseno vai karṇavākśalyapīḍitaḥ ,
amarṣavaśamāpannaḥ phalgunaṁ vākyamabravīt.
2. saṃjayaḥ uvāca virathaḥ bhīmasenaḥ vai karṇavākśalyapīḍitaḥ
amarṣavaśam āpannaḥ phalgunam vākyam abravīt

2. Sanjaya said: "Indeed, Bhimasena, dismounted from his chariot and tormented by Karna's taunting words, became overwhelmed with indignation and spoke to Phalguna (Arjuna)."
पुनः पुनस्तूबरक मूढ औदरिकेति च ।
अकृतास्त्रक मा योधीर्बाल संग्रामकातर ॥३॥
3. punaḥ punastūbaraka mūḍha audariketi ca ,
akṛtāstraka mā yodhīrbāla saṁgrāmakātara.
3. punaḥ punaḥ tūbaraka mūḍha audarika iti ca
akṛtāstraka mā yodhīḥ bāla saṃgrāmakātara
3. punaḥ punaḥ,
tūbaraka mūḍha audarika iti ca,
akṛtāstraka bāla saṃgrāmakātara mā yodhīḥ
3. Again and again, Karna called me 'Oh wretch, oh fool, oh glutton!' and said, 'Oh you unskilled in weaponry, oh boy timid of battle, do not fight!'
इति मामब्रवीत्कर्णः पश्यतस्ते धनंजय ।
एवं वक्ता च मे वध्यस्तेन चोक्तोऽस्मि भारत ॥४॥
4. iti māmabravītkarṇaḥ paśyataste dhanaṁjaya ,
evaṁ vaktā ca me vadhyastena cokto'smi bhārata.
4. iti mām abravīt karṇaḥ paśyataḥ te dhanaṃjaya evam
vaktā ca me vadhyaḥ tena ca uktaḥ asmi bhārata
4. dhanaṃjaya,
te paśyataḥ karṇaḥ iti mām abravīt.
ca bhārata,
evam vaktā me vadhyaḥ,
tena ca uktaḥ asmi.
4. O Dhananjaya, Karna spoke to me thus, while you were watching. And he who spoke these words is destined to be killed by me, O Bharata; I have been spoken to by him.
एतद्व्रतं महाबाहो त्वया सह कृतं मया ।
यथैतन्मम कौन्तेय तथा तव न संशयः ॥५॥
5. etadvrataṁ mahābāho tvayā saha kṛtaṁ mayā ,
yathaitanmama kaunteya tathā tava na saṁśayaḥ.
5. etat vratam mahābāho tvayā saha kṛtam mayā
yathā etat mama kaunteya tathā tava na saṃśayaḥ
5. mahābāho,
etat vratam mayā tvayā saha kṛtam.
kaunteya,
yathā etat mama,
tathā tava; na saṃśayaḥ.
5. O mighty-armed (Arjuna), this vow was undertaken by me together with you. O son of Kunti, just as this (vow) is binding upon me, so too is it upon you, without a doubt.
तद्वधाय नरश्रेष्ठ स्मरैतद्वचनं मम ।
यथा भवति तत्सत्यं तथा कुरु धनंजय ॥६॥
6. tadvadhāya naraśreṣṭha smaraitadvacanaṁ mama ,
yathā bhavati tatsatyaṁ tathā kuru dhanaṁjaya.
6. tat vadhāya naraśreṣṭha smara etat vacanam mama
yathā bhavati tat satyam tathā kuru dhanaṃjaya
6. naraśreṣṭha,
tat vadhāya mama etat vacanam smara.
dhanaṃjaya,
yathā tat satyam bhavati,
tathā kuru.
6. O best among men (Arjuna), remember this promise of mine for his slaying. O Dhananjaya, act so that this (promise) becomes true.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य भीमस्यामितविक्रमः ।
ततोऽर्जुनोऽब्रवीत्कर्णं किंचिदभ्येत्य संयुगे ॥७॥
7. tacchrutvā vacanaṁ tasya bhīmasyāmitavikramaḥ ,
tato'rjuno'bravītkarṇaṁ kiṁcidabhyetya saṁyuge.
7. tat śrutvā vacanam tasya bhīmasya amita-vikramaḥ
tataḥ arjunaḥ abravīt karṇam kiñcit abhyetya saṃyuge
7. amita-vikramaḥ arjunaḥ tasya bhīmasya vacanam
śrutvā tataḥ saṃyuge kiñcit abhyetya karṇam abravīt
7. Having heard those words of Bhīma, Arjuna, of immeasurable valor, then, drawing a little closer in battle, spoke to Karṇa.
कर्ण कर्ण वृथादृष्टे सूतपुत्रात्मसंस्तुत ।
अधर्मबुद्धे शृणु मे यत्त्वा वक्ष्यामि सांप्रतम् ॥८॥
8. karṇa karṇa vṛthādṛṣṭe sūtaputrātmasaṁstuta ,
adharmabuddhe śṛṇu me yattvā vakṣyāmi sāṁpratam.
8. karṇa karṇa vṛthā-dṛṣṭe sūta-putra-ātma-saṃstuta
adharma-buddhe śṛṇu me yat tvā vakṣyāmi sāmpratam
8. karṇa karṇa vṛthā-dṛṣṭe sūta-putra-ātma-saṃstuta
adharma-buddhe me yat tvā sāmpratam vakṣyāmi śṛṇu
8. O Karṇa, O Karṇa, whose understanding is flawed, who praises himself as the son of a charioteer, whose intellect is fixed on what is contrary to natural law (dharma), listen to what I will now tell you.
द्विविधं कर्म शूराणां युद्धे जयपराजयौ ।
तौ चाप्यनित्यौ राधेय वासवस्यापि युध्यतः ॥९॥
9. dvividhaṁ karma śūrāṇāṁ yuddhe jayaparājayau ,
tau cāpyanityau rādheya vāsavasyāpi yudhyataḥ.
9. dvividham karma śūrāṇām yuddhe jaya-parājayau tau
ca api anityau rādheya vāsavasya api yudhyataḥ
9. rādheya śūrāṇām yuddhe karma dvividham jaya-parājayau.
tau api anityau vāsavasya api yudhyataḥ.
9. For heroes in battle, action (karma) is of two kinds: victory and defeat. And these two, O son of Rādhā, are impermanent, even for Indra (Vāsava) when he fights.
मुमूर्षुर्युयुधानेन विरथोऽसि विसर्जितः ।
यदृच्छया भीमसेनं विरथं कृतवानसि ॥१०॥
10. mumūrṣuryuyudhānena viratho'si visarjitaḥ ,
yadṛcchayā bhīmasenaṁ virathaṁ kṛtavānasi.
10. mumūrṣuḥ yuyudhānena virathaḥ asi visarjitaḥ
yadṛcchayā bhīmasenam viratham kṛtavān asi
10. mumūrṣuḥ virathaḥ yuyudhānena visarjitaḥ asi.
yadṛcchayā bhīmasenam viratham kṛtavān asi.
10. Desiring death, you were released by Yuyudhāna (Satyaki) after being dismounted from your chariot. Yet, by mere chance, you succeeded in making Bhīmasena chariot-less.
अधर्मस्त्वेष राधेय यत्त्वं भीममवोचथाः ।
युद्धधर्मं विजानन्वै युध्यन्तमपलायिनम् ।
पूरयन्तं यथाशक्ति शूरकर्माहवे तथा ॥११॥
11. adharmastveṣa rādheya yattvaṁ bhīmamavocathāḥ ,
yuddhadharmaṁ vijānanvai yudhyantamapalāyinam ,
pūrayantaṁ yathāśakti śūrakarmāhave tathā.
11. adharmaḥ tu eṣa radheya yat tvam
bhīmam avocathāḥ yuddhadharmam vijānan
vai yudhyantam apalāyinam pūrayantam
yathāśakti śūrakarma āhave tathā
11. radheya eṣaḥ tu adharmaḥ yat tvam
bhīmam avocathāḥ yuddhadharmam
vijānan vai yudhyantam apalāyinam
yathāśakti śūrakarma āhave tathā
11. O son of Rādhā (Rādheya), it is indeed an act against natural law (adharma) that you spoke to Bhīma in such a way. For he was fighting, not fleeing, and performing heroic deeds to the best of his ability in battle, while well aware of the natural law (dharma) of warfare.
पश्यतां सर्वसैन्यानां केशवस्य ममैव च ।
विरथो भीमसेनेन कृतोऽसि बहुशो रणे ।
न च त्वां परुषं किंचिदुक्तवान्पण्डुनन्दनः ॥१२॥
12. paśyatāṁ sarvasainyānāṁ keśavasya mamaiva ca ,
viratho bhīmasenena kṛto'si bahuśo raṇe ,
na ca tvāṁ paruṣaṁ kiṁciduktavānpaṇḍunandanaḥ.
12. paśyatām sarvasainyānām keśavasya
mama eva ca virathaḥ bhīmasenena
kṛtaḥ asi bahuśaḥ raṇe na ca tvām
paruṣam kiñcit uktavān pāṇḍunandanaḥ
12. sarvasainyānām keśavasya mama eva
ca paśyatām raṇe bhīmasenena bahuśaḥ
virathaḥ kṛtaḥ asi ca pāṇḍunandanaḥ
tvām kiñcit paruṣam na uktavān
12. While all the armies, Keśava, and I myself were watching, you were made charipless by Bhīmasena many times in battle. And yet, the son of Pāṇḍu (Pāṇḍunandana) did not speak anything harsh to you.
यस्मात्तु बहु रूक्षं च श्रावितस्ते वृकोदरः ।
परोक्षं यच्च सौभद्रो युष्माभिर्निहतो मम ॥१३॥
13. yasmāttu bahu rūkṣaṁ ca śrāvitaste vṛkodaraḥ ,
parokṣaṁ yacca saubhadro yuṣmābhirnihato mama.
13. yasmāt tu bahu rūkṣam ca śrāvitaḥ te vṛkodaraḥ
parokṣam yat ca saubhadraḥ yuṣmābhiḥ nihataḥ mama
13. yasmāt tu te vṛkodaraḥ bahu rūkṣam śrāvitaḥ ca
yat mama saubhadraḥ yuṣmābhiḥ parokṣam nihataḥ
13. Because it was by you that Vṛkodara (Bhīma) was made to hear many harsh words; and also because Saubhadra (Abhimanyu), my son, was killed by you all in my absence.
तस्मादस्यावलेपस्य सद्यः फलमवाप्नुहि ।
त्वया तस्य धनुश्छिन्नमात्मनाशाय दुर्मते ॥१४॥
14. tasmādasyāvalepasya sadyaḥ phalamavāpnuhi ,
tvayā tasya dhanuśchinnamātmanāśāya durmate.
14. tasmāt asya avalepasya sadyaḥ phalam avāpnuhi
tvayā tasya dhanuḥ chinnam ātmanāśāya durmate
14. tasmāt asya avalepasya phalam sadyaḥ avāpnuhi durmate,
tvayā ātmanāśāya tasya dhanuḥ chinnam
14. Therefore, immediately reap the fruit of this arrogance (avalepa)! O evil-minded one (durmate), his bow was cut by you for your own destruction (ātmanāśa).
तस्माद्वध्योऽसि मे मूढ सभृत्यबलवाहनः ।
कुरु त्वं सर्वकृत्यानि महत्ते भयमागतम् ॥१५॥
15. tasmādvadhyo'si me mūḍha sabhṛtyabalavāhanaḥ ,
kuru tvaṁ sarvakṛtyāni mahatte bhayamāgatam.
15. tasmāt vadhyaḥ asi me mūḍha sa-bhṛtya-bala-vāhanaḥ
| kuru tvam sarva-kṛtyāni mahat te bhayam āgatam
15. tasmāt mūḍha sa-bhṛtya-bala-vāhanaḥ me vadhyaḥ
asi mahat bhayam te āgatam tvam sarva-kṛtyāni kuru
15. Therefore, you, deluded one, deserve to be killed by me, along with your servants, army, and vehicles. Great fear has come upon you, so fulfill all your duties now.
हन्तास्मि वृषसेनं ते प्रेक्षमाणस्य संयुगे ।
ये चान्येऽप्युपयास्यन्ति बुद्धिमोहेन मां नृपाः ।
तांश्च सर्वान्हनिष्यामि सत्येनायुधमालभे ॥१६॥
16. hantāsmi vṛṣasenaṁ te prekṣamāṇasya saṁyuge ,
ye cānye'pyupayāsyanti buddhimohena māṁ nṛpāḥ ,
tāṁśca sarvānhaniṣyāmi satyenāyudhamālabhe.
16. hantā asmi vṛṣasenam te prekṣamāṇasya
saṃyuge | ye ca anye api upayāsyanti
buddhimōhena mām nṛpāḥ | tān ca
sarvān haniṣyāmi satyena āyudham ālabhe
16. (aham) te vṛṣasenam prekṣamāṇasya saṃyuge
hantā asmi ye ca anye api nṛpāḥ
buddhimōhena mām upayāsyanti tān ca sarvān
haniṣyāmi (aham) satyena āyudham ālabhe
16. I will kill your Vṛṣasena right before your eyes in battle. And any other kings who, out of delusion (buddhimoha), approach me, I will kill them all. I swear this by my weapon.
त्वां च मूढाकृतप्रज्ञमतिमानिनमाहवे ।
दृष्ट्वा दुर्योधनो मन्दो भृशं तप्स्यति पातितम् ॥१७॥
17. tvāṁ ca mūḍhākṛtaprajñamatimāninamāhave ,
dṛṣṭvā duryodhano mando bhṛśaṁ tapsyati pātitam.
17. tvām ca mūḍha-akṛta-prajñam ati-māninam āhave |
dṛṣṭvā duryodhanaḥ mandaḥ bhṛśam tapsyati pātitam
17. duryodhanaḥ mandaḥ mūḍha-akṛta-prajñam ati-māninam
tvām ca āhave pātitam dṛṣṭvā bhṛśam tapsyati
17. And Duryodhana, that dull-witted fellow, will grieve greatly when he sees you - foolish, lacking in wisdom (prajña), and excessively arrogant - fallen in battle.
अर्जुनेन प्रतिज्ञाते वधे कर्णसुतस्य तु ।
महान्सुतुमुलः शब्दो बभूव रथिनां तदा ॥१८॥
18. arjunena pratijñāte vadhe karṇasutasya tu ,
mahānsutumulaḥ śabdo babhūva rathināṁ tadā.
18. arjunena pratijñāte vadhe karṇa-sutasya tu |
mahān su-tumulaḥ śabdaḥ babhūva rathinām tadā
18. arjunena karṇa-sutasya vadhe pratijñāte tu
tadā rathinām mahān su-tumulaḥ śabdaḥ babhūva
18. When Arjuna swore to kill Karna's son, a great and tumultuous roar arose from the charioteers at that moment.
तस्मिन्नाकुलसंग्रामे वर्तमाने महाभये ।
मन्दरश्मिः सहस्रांशुरस्तं गिरिमुपागमत् ॥१९॥
19. tasminnākulasaṁgrāme vartamāne mahābhaye ,
mandaraśmiḥ sahasrāṁśurastaṁ girimupāgamat.
19. tasmin ākula-saṅgrāme vartamāne mahābhaye
mandaraśmiḥ sahasrāṁśuḥ astam girim upāgamat
19. mahābhaye ākula-saṅgrāme tasmin vartamāne
mandaraśmiḥ sahasrāṁśuḥ astam girim upāgamat
19. While that turbulent and greatly fearsome battle was ongoing, the sun, with its dimming rays, went towards the setting mountain (i.e., set).
ततो राजन्हृषीकेशः संग्रामशिरसि स्थितम् ।
तीर्णप्रतिज्ञं बीभत्सुं परिष्वज्येदमब्रवीत् ॥२०॥
20. tato rājanhṛṣīkeśaḥ saṁgrāmaśirasi sthitam ,
tīrṇapratijñaṁ bībhatsuṁ pariṣvajyedamabravīt.
20. tataḥ rājan hṛṣīkeśaḥ saṅgrāma-śirasi sthitam
tīrṇa-pratijñam bībhatsum pariṣvajya idam abravīt
20. rājan tataḥ hṛṣīkeśaḥ saṅgrāma-śirasi sthitam
tīrṇa-pratijñam bībhatsum pariṣvajya idam abravīt
20. Then, O king, Hrishikesha (Kṛṣṇa) embraced Bībhatsu (Arjuna), who stood at the forefront of the battle having fulfilled his vow (pratijñā), and said this.
दिष्ट्या संपादिता जिष्णो प्रतिज्ञा महती त्वया ।
दिष्ट्या च निहतः पापो वृद्धक्षत्रः सहात्मजः ॥२१॥
21. diṣṭyā saṁpāditā jiṣṇo pratijñā mahatī tvayā ,
diṣṭyā ca nihataḥ pāpo vṛddhakṣatraḥ sahātmajaḥ.
21. diṣṭyā saṁpāditā jiṣṇo pratijñā mahatī tvayā
diṣṭyā ca nihataḥ pāpaḥ vṛddhakṣatraḥ saha-ātmajaḥ
21. jiṣṇo diṣṭyā tvayā mahatī pratijñā saṁpāditā ca
diṣṭyā pāpaḥ vṛddhakṣatraḥ saha-ātmajaḥ nihataḥ
21. Fortunately, O Jiṣṇu (Arjuna), that great vow (pratijñā) was fulfilled by you. And fortunately, the wicked Vṛddhakṣatra was slain along with his son.
धार्तराष्ट्रबलं प्राप्य देवसेनापि भारत ।
सीदेत समरे जिष्णो नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥२२॥
22. dhārtarāṣṭrabalaṁ prāpya devasenāpi bhārata ,
sīdeta samare jiṣṇo nātra kāryā vicāraṇā.
22. dhārtarāṣṭra-balam prāpya deva-senā api bhārata
sīdet samare jiṣṇo na atra kāryā vicāraṇā
22. bhārata jiṣṇo dhārtarāṣṭra-balam prāpya
deva-senā api samare sīdet atra vicāraṇā na kāryā
22. O Bhārata, even the army of the gods, upon encountering the Dhārtarāṣṭra army, would become dejected in battle, O Jiṣṇu (Arjuna). There is no need for deliberation here.
न तं पश्यामि लोकेषु चिन्तयन्पुरुषं क्वचित् ।
त्वदृते पुरुषव्याघ्र य एतद्योधयेद्बलम् ॥२३॥
23. na taṁ paśyāmi lokeṣu cintayanpuruṣaṁ kvacit ,
tvadṛte puruṣavyāghra ya etadyodhayedbalam.
23. na tam paśyāmi lokeṣu cintayan puruṣam kvacit
tvat ṛte puruṣavyāghra yaḥ etat yodhayet balam
23. puruṣavyāghra cintayan aham lokeṣu kvacit tam
puruṣam na paśyāmi yaḥ tvat ṛte etat balam yodhayet
23. O tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), pondering, I do not see anyone anywhere in the worlds (lokeṣu), except for you, who could lead this army in battle.
महाप्रभावा बहवस्त्वया तुल्याधिकापि वा ।
समेताः पृथिवीपाला धार्तराष्ट्रस्य कारणात् ।
ते त्वां प्राप्य रणे क्रुद्धं नाभ्यवर्तन्त दंशिताः ॥२४॥
24. mahāprabhāvā bahavastvayā tulyādhikāpi vā ,
sametāḥ pṛthivīpālā dhārtarāṣṭrasya kāraṇāt ,
te tvāṁ prāpya raṇe kruddhaṁ nābhyavartanta daṁśitāḥ.
24. mahāprabhāvāḥ bahavaḥ tvayā tulyādhikāḥ
api vā sametāḥ pṛthivīpālāḥ
dhārtarāṣṭrasya kāraṇāt te tvām prāpya
raṇe kruddham na abhyavartanta daṃśitāḥ
24. dhārtarāṣṭrasya kāraṇāt bahavaḥ
mahāprabhāvāḥ tvayā tulyādhikāḥ api vā
pṛthivīpālāḥ sametāḥ te daṃśitāḥ raṇe
kruddham tvām prāpya na abhyavartanta
24. Many kings (pṛthivīpālāḥ) of great power (mahāprabhāvāḥ), even those equal to or greater than you, gathered for Duryodhana's sake. Yet, though fully armored, they did not turn to face you when they encountered you, enraged, in battle (raṇa).
तव वीर्यं बलं चैव रुद्रशक्रान्तकोपमम् ।
नेदृशं शक्नुयात्कश्चिद्रणे कर्तुं पराक्रमम् ।
यादृशं कृतवानद्य त्वमेकः शत्रुतापनः ॥२५॥
25. tava vīryaṁ balaṁ caiva rudraśakrāntakopamam ,
nedṛśaṁ śaknuyātkaścidraṇe kartuṁ parākramam ,
yādṛśaṁ kṛtavānadya tvamekaḥ śatrutāpanaḥ.
25. tava vīryam balam ca eva rudraśakrāntakopam
am na īdṛśam śaknuyāt
kaścit raṇe kartum parākramam yādṛśam
kṛtavān adya tvam ekaḥ śatrutāpanaḥ
25. tava vīryam balam ca eva rudraśakrāntakopam
am kaścit raṇe īdṛśam
parākramam kartum śaknuyāt yādṛśam
ekaḥ tvam śatrutāpanaḥ adya kṛtavān
25. Your valor (vīrya) and strength (bala) are indeed like the wrath of Rudra, Śakra (Indra), and Antaka (Yama). No one could display such prowess (parākrama) in battle (raṇa) as you, the tormentor of foes, have done alone today.
एवमेव हते कर्णे सानुबन्धे दुरात्मनि ।
वर्धयिष्यामि भूयस्त्वां विजितारिं हतद्विषम् ॥२६॥
26. evameva hate karṇe sānubandhe durātmani ,
vardhayiṣyāmi bhūyastvāṁ vijitāriṁ hatadviṣam.
26. evam eva hate karṇe sānubandhe durātmani
vardhayiṣyāmi bhūyas tvām vijitārim hatadviṣam
26. evam eva durātmani sānubandhe karṇe hate aham
bhūyas tvām vijitārim hatadviṣam vardhayiṣyāmi
26. Now that the wicked Karṇa, along with his followers, has been slain, I shall further enhance your prosperity, for you have conquered your adversaries and killed your enemies.
तमर्जुनः प्रत्युवाच प्रसादात्तव माधव ।
प्रतिज्ञेयं मयोत्तीर्णा विबुधैरपि दुस्तरा ॥२७॥
27. tamarjunaḥ pratyuvāca prasādāttava mādhava ,
pratijñeyaṁ mayottīrṇā vibudhairapi dustarā.
27. tam arjunaḥ prati uvāca prasādāt tava mādhava
pratijñā iyam mayā uttīrṇā vibudhaiḥ api dustarā
27. mādhava tava prasādāt tam arjunaḥ prati uvāca
iyam pratijñā vibudhaiḥ api dustarā mayā uttīrṇā
27. Arjuna replied to him, "O Madhava, by your grace, this vow, difficult to fulfill even for the gods, has been accomplished by me."
अनाश्चर्यो जयस्तेषां येषां नाथोऽसि माधव ।
त्वत्प्रसादान्महीं कृत्स्नां संप्राप्स्यति युधिष्ठिरः ॥२८॥
28. anāścaryo jayasteṣāṁ yeṣāṁ nātho'si mādhava ,
tvatprasādānmahīṁ kṛtsnāṁ saṁprāpsyati yudhiṣṭhiraḥ.
28. anāścaryaḥ jayaḥ teṣām yeṣām nāthaḥ asi mādhava tvat
prasādāt mahīm kṛtsnām samprāpsyati yudhiṣṭhiraḥ
28. mādhava yeṣām tvaṃ nāthaḥ asi teṣām jayaḥ anāścaryaḥ
tvat prasādāt yudhiṣṭhiraḥ kṛtsnām mahīm samprāpsyati
28. O Madhava, the victory of those whose protector you are is not surprising. By your grace, Yudhishthira will obtain the entire earth.
तवैव भारो वार्ष्णेय तवैव विजयः प्रभो ।
वर्धनीयास्तव वयं प्रेष्याश्च मधुसूदन ॥२९॥
29. tavaiva bhāro vārṣṇeya tavaiva vijayaḥ prabho ,
vardhanīyāstava vayaṁ preṣyāśca madhusūdana.

vardhanīyāḥ tava vayam preṣyāḥ ca madhusūdana
29. vārṣṇeya prabho madhusūdana bhāraḥ tava eva

29. O descendant of Vrishni (Vārṣṇeya), O Lord (prabho), the responsibility is indeed yours, and the victory is indeed yours. We are to be sustained by you, and we are your servants, O destroyer of Madhu (madhusūdana).
एवमुक्तः स्मयन्कृष्णः शनकैर्वाहयन्हयान् ।
दर्शयामास पार्थाय क्रूरमायोधनं महत् ॥३०॥
30. evamuktaḥ smayankṛṣṇaḥ śanakairvāhayanhayān ,
darśayāmāsa pārthāya krūramāyodhanaṁ mahat.

darśayāmāsa pārthāya krūram āyodhanam mahat

30. Having been spoken to in this manner, Krishna, smiling and slowly driving the horses, showed Arjuna (Pārtha) the vast, fierce battlefield.
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच ।
प्रार्थयन्तो जयं युद्धे प्रथितं च महद्यशः ।
पृथिव्यां शेरते शूराः पार्थिवास्त्वच्छरैर्हताः ॥३१॥
31. śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca ,
prārthayanto jayaṁ yuddhe prathitaṁ ca mahadyaśaḥ ,
pṛthivyāṁ śerate śūrāḥ pārthivāstvaccharairhatāḥ.

31. Śrī Kṛṣṇa spoke: The heroes and kings who prayed for victory in battle and great renown now lie on the earth, slain by your arrows.
विकीर्णशस्त्राभरणा विपन्नाश्वरथद्विपाः ।
संछिन्नभिन्नवर्माणो वैक्लव्यं परमं गताः ॥३२॥
32. vikīrṇaśastrābharaṇā vipannāśvarathadvipāḥ ,
saṁchinnabhinnavarmāṇo vaiklavyaṁ paramaṁ gatāḥ.
32. vikīrṇaśastrābharaṇāḥ vipannāśvarathadvipāḥ |
saṃchinnabhinnavarmāṇaḥ vaiklavyam paramam gatāḥ
32. paramam vaiklavyam gatāḥ vikīrṇaśastrābharaṇāḥ

32. They lie with their weapons and ornaments scattered, their horses, chariots, and elephants fallen, and their armors shattered and broken; they have reached the utmost state of distress.
ससत्त्वा गतसत्त्वाश्च प्रभया परया युताः ।
सजीवा इव लक्ष्यन्ते गतसत्त्वा नराधिपाः ॥३३॥
33. sasattvā gatasattvāśca prabhayā parayā yutāḥ ,
sajīvā iva lakṣyante gatasattvā narādhipāḥ.
33. sasattvāḥ gatasattvāḥ ca prabhayā parayā yutāḥ
| sajīvāḥ iva lakṣyante gatasattvāḥ narādhipāḥ
33. gatasattvāḥ narādhipāḥ ca sasattvāḥ

33. The kings, devoid of life (gatasattvā), yet appear as if still possessing vitality (sasattvā), endowed with supreme splendor, seeming to be alive.
तेषां शरैः स्वर्णपुङ्खैः शस्त्रैश्च विविधैः शितैः ।
वाहनैरायुधैश्चैव संपूर्णां पश्य मेदिनीम् ॥३४॥
34. teṣāṁ śaraiḥ svarṇapuṅkhaiḥ śastraiśca vividhaiḥ śitaiḥ ,
vāhanairāyudhaiścaiva saṁpūrṇāṁ paśya medinīm.
34. teṣām śaraiḥ svarṇapuṅkhaiḥ śastraiḥ ca vividhaiḥ śitaiḥ
| vāhanaiḥ āyudhaiḥ ca eva saṃpūrṇām paśya medinīm

34. Behold the earth completely filled with their golden-feathered arrows, various sharp weapons, conveyances, and arms.
वर्मभिश्चर्मभिर्हारैः शिरोभिश्च सकुण्डलैः ।
उष्णीषैर्मुकुटैः स्रग्भिश्चूडामणिभिरम्बरैः ॥३५॥
35. varmabhiścarmabhirhāraiḥ śirobhiśca sakuṇḍalaiḥ ,
uṣṇīṣairmukuṭaiḥ sragbhiścūḍāmaṇibhirambaraiḥ.
35. varmabhiḥ carmabhiḥ hāraiḥ śirobhiḥ ca sakuṇḍalaiḥ
uṣṇīṣaiḥ mukuṭaiḥ sragbhiḥ cūḍāmaṇibhiḥ ambaraiḥ
35. varmabhiḥ carmabhiḥ hāraiḥ śirobhiḥ sakuṇḍalaiḥ ca
uṣṇīṣaiḥ mukuṭaiḥ sragbhiḥ cūḍāmaṇibhiḥ ambaraiḥ
35. With armors, shields, necklaces, and heads adorned with earrings, with turbans, crowns, garlands, crest-jewels, and garments.
कण्ठसूत्रैरङ्गदैश्च निष्कैरपि च सुप्रभैः ।
अन्यैश्चाभरणैश्चित्रैर्भाति भारत मेदिनी ॥३६॥
36. kaṇṭhasūtrairaṅgadaiśca niṣkairapi ca suprabhaiḥ ,
anyaiścābharaṇaiścitrairbhāti bhārata medinī.

anyaiḥ ca ābharaṇaiḥ citraiḥ bhāti bhārata medinī

suprabhaiḥ api ca anyaiḥ citraiḥ ābharaṇaiḥ ca bhāti
36. O Bharata, the earth shines with neck-chains, armlets, and also with resplendent golden ornaments, and with other variegated and wonderful adornments.
चामरैर्व्यजनैश्चित्रैर्ध्वजैश्चाश्वरथद्विपैः ।
विविधैश्च परिस्तोमैरश्वानां च प्रकीर्णकैः ॥३७॥
37. cāmarairvyajanaiścitrairdhvajaiścāśvarathadvipaiḥ ,
vividhaiśca paristomairaśvānāṁ ca prakīrṇakaiḥ.
37. cāmaraiḥ vyajanaiḥ citraiḥ dhvajaiḥ ca aśvarathadvipaiḥ
vividhaiḥ ca paristomaiḥ aśvānām ca prakīrṇakaiḥ
37. cāmaraiḥ vyajanaiḥ citraiḥ dhvajaiḥ ca aśvarathadvipaiḥ
vividhaiḥ aśvānām paristomaiḥ ca prakīrṇakaiḥ ca
37. With chowries, with variegated fans and banners, with horses, chariots, and elephants; and with various housings for horses, and with their scattered ornaments or decorations.
कुथाभिश्च विचित्राभिर्वरूथैश्च महाधनैः ।
संस्तीर्णां वसुधां पश्य चित्रपट्टैरिवावृताम् ॥३८॥
38. kuthābhiśca vicitrābhirvarūthaiśca mahādhanaiḥ ,
saṁstīrṇāṁ vasudhāṁ paśya citrapaṭṭairivāvṛtām.
38. kuthābhiḥ ca vicitrābhiḥ varūthaiḥ ca mahādhanaiḥ
saṃstīrṇām vasudhām paśya citrapaṭṭaiḥ iva āvṛtām
38. paśya kuthābhiḥ vicitrābhiḥ ca mahādhanaiḥ varūthaiḥ
ca saṃstīrṇām vasudhām citrapaṭṭaiḥ iva āvṛtām
38. And with variegated horse blankets, and with very costly chariots or their trappings, behold the earth, strewn and covered as if with painted cloths.
नागेभ्यः पतितानन्यान्कल्पितेभ्यो द्विपैः सह ।
सिंहान्वज्रप्रणुन्नेभ्यो गिर्यग्रेभ्य इव च्युतान् ॥३९॥
39. nāgebhyaḥ patitānanyānkalpitebhyo dvipaiḥ saha ,
siṁhānvajrapraṇunnebhyo giryagrebhya iva cyutān.
39. nāgebhyaḥ patitān anyān kalpitebhyaḥ dvipaiḥ saha |
siṃhān vajrapranuṇṇebhyaḥ giryagrebhyaḥ iva cyutān
39. anyān nāgebhyaḥ patitān,
kalpitebhyaḥ dvipaiḥ saha (patitān),
vajrapranuṇṇebhyaḥ giryagrebhyaḥ iva cyutān siṃhān (paśya)
39. You can see others fallen from elephants, and (others fallen) from the arrayed (formations), along with elephants. You also see lion-like warriors fallen as if from mountain peaks struck down by a thunderbolt.
संस्यूतान्वाजिभिः सार्धं धरण्यां पश्य चापरान् ।
पदातिसादिसंघांश्च क्षतजौघपरिप्लुतान् ॥४०॥
40. saṁsyūtānvājibhiḥ sārdhaṁ dharaṇyāṁ paśya cāparān ,
padātisādisaṁghāṁśca kṣatajaughapariplutān.
40. saṃsyūtān vājibhiḥ sārdhaṃ dharaṇyāṃ paśya ca
aparān | padātisādisaṅghān ca kṣatajaughapariprutān
40. ca aparān vājibhiḥ sārdhaṃ dharaṇyāṃ saṃsyūtān,
ca padātisādisaṅghān kṣatajaughapariprutān paśya.
40. And see other (warriors) lying on the earth, intertwined with horses, as well as throngs of infantry and cavalry completely submerged in torrents of blood.
संजय उवाच ।
एवं संदर्शयन्कृष्णो रणभूमिं किरीटिनः ।
स्वैः समेतः स मुदितः पाञ्चजन्यं व्यनादयत् ॥४१॥
41. saṁjaya uvāca ,
evaṁ saṁdarśayankṛṣṇo raṇabhūmiṁ kirīṭinaḥ ,
svaiḥ sametaḥ sa muditaḥ pāñcajanyaṁ vyanādayat.
41. saṃjaya uvāca | evaṃ saṃdarśayan kṛṣṇaḥ raṇabhūmim
kirīṭinaḥ | svaiḥ sametaḥ sa muditaḥ pāñcajanyam vyanādayat

muditaḥ saḥ,
pāñcajanyam vyanādayat.
41. Sanjaya said: Thus, showing the battlefield to the crowned one (Arjuna), Kṛṣṇa, delighted and accompanied by his own (kinsmen), blew his conch Pāñcajanya.
