प्रविष्टयोर्महाराज पार्थवार्ष्णेययोस्तदा ।
दुर्योधने प्रयाते च पृष्ठतः पुरुषर्षभे ॥१॥

जवेनाभ्यद्रवन्द्रोणं महता निस्वनेन च ।
पाण्डवाः सोमकैः सार्धं ततो युद्धमवर्तत ॥२॥
2. javenābhyadravandroṇaṁ mahatā nisvanena ca ,
pāṇḍavāḥ somakaiḥ sārdhaṁ tato yuddhamavartata.

2. Then the Pāṇḍavas, accompanied by the Somakas, swiftly rushed towards Droṇa with a mighty roar, and thereupon the battle commenced.
तद्युद्धमभवद्घोरं तुमुलं लोमहर्षणम् ।
पाञ्चालानां कुरूणां च व्यूहस्य पुरतोऽद्भुतम् ॥३॥
3. tadyuddhamabhavadghoraṁ tumulaṁ lomaharṣaṇam ,
pāñcālānāṁ kurūṇāṁ ca vyūhasya purato'dbhutam.
3. tat yuddham abhavat ghoram tumulam lomaharṣaṇam
pāñcālānām kurūṇām ca vyūhasya purataḥ adbhutam

3. That terrible, tumultuous, hair-raising, and astonishing battle occurred in front of the battle formation of the Pāñcālas and the Kurus.
राजन्कदाचिन्नास्माभिर्दृष्टं तादृङ्न च श्रुतम् ।
यादृङ्मध्यगते सूर्ये युद्धमासीद्विशां पते ॥४॥
4. rājankadācinnāsmābhirdṛṣṭaṁ tādṛṅna ca śrutam ,
yādṛṅmadhyagate sūrye yuddhamāsīdviśāṁ pate.
4. rājan kadācit na asmābhiḥ dṛṣṭam tādṛk na ca śrutam
yādṛk madhyagate sūrye yuddham āsīt viśām pate
4. rājan viśām pate asmābhiḥ tādṛk yādṛk madhyagate
sūrye yuddham āsīt tat kadācit na dṛṣṭam ca na śrutam
4. O King (rājan), we have never seen or heard of such a battle, O Lord of the people (viśām pate), as the one that took place when the sun was at its zenith.
धृष्टद्युम्नमुखाः पार्था व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः ।
द्रोणस्य सैन्यं ते सर्वे शरवर्षैरवाकिरन् ॥५॥
5. dhṛṣṭadyumnamukhāḥ pārthā vyūḍhānīkāḥ prahāriṇaḥ ,
droṇasya sainyaṁ te sarve śaravarṣairavākiran.

5. All those Pārthas, led by Dhṛṣṭadyumna, with their battle formations arrayed, attacked and showered Drona's army with torrents of arrows.
वयं द्रोणं पुरस्कृत्य सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरम् ।
पार्षतप्रमुखान्पार्थानभ्यवर्षाम सायकैः ॥६॥
6. vayaṁ droṇaṁ puraskṛtya sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ varam ,
pārṣatapramukhānpārthānabhyavarṣāma sāyakaiḥ.

pārṣatapramukhān pārthān abhyavarṣāma sāyakaiḥ

6. We, with Droṇa - the foremost among all weapon-bearers - at our lead, showered arrows upon the Pārthas, who were headed by Drupada's son (Dhṛṣṭadyumna).
महामेघाविवोदीर्णौ मिश्रवातौ हिमात्यये ।
सेनाग्रे विप्रकाशेते रुचिरे रथभूषिते ॥७॥
7. mahāmeghāvivodīrṇau miśravātau himātyaye ,
senāgre viprakāśete rucire rathabhūṣite.

senā agre viprakāśete rucire rathabhūṣite

7. At the forefront of the army, the two, splendid and adorned with chariots, shone brightly, like two great clouds appearing with mixed winds at the end of winter.
समेत्य तु महासेने चक्रतुर्वेगमुत्तमम् ।
जाह्नवीयमुने नद्यौ प्रावृषीवोल्बणोदके ॥८॥
8. sametya tu mahāsene cakraturvegamuttamam ,
jāhnavīyamune nadyau prāvṛṣīvolbaṇodake.

8. Having come together, the two great armies indeed created an immense momentum, just like the rivers Gaṅgā and Yamunā with their abundant waters during the rainy season.
नानाशस्त्रपुरोवातो द्विपाश्वरथसंवृतः ।
गदाविद्युन्महारौद्रः संग्रामजलदो महान् ॥९॥
9. nānāśastrapurovāto dvipāśvarathasaṁvṛtaḥ ,
gadāvidyunmahāraudraḥ saṁgrāmajalado mahān.

9. This great battle-cloud, with its vanguard wind being various weapons, surrounded by elephants, horses, and chariots, and tremendously fierce with maces resembling lightning...
भारद्वाजानिलोद्धूतः शरधारासहस्रवान् ।
अभ्यवर्षन्महारौद्रः पाण्डुसेनाग्निमुद्धतम् ॥१०॥
10. bhāradvājāniloddhūtaḥ śaradhārāsahasravān ,
abhyavarṣanmahāraudraḥ pāṇḍusenāgnimuddhatam.

abhyavarṣat mahāraudraḥ pāṇḍusenāgnim uddhatam

10. The tremendously fierce (battle-cloud), agitated by the wind that was Bhāradvāja (Droṇa) and possessing thousands of showers of arrows, rained down upon the fierce fire of the Pāṇḍava army.
समुद्रमिव घर्मान्ते विवान्घोरो महानिलः ।
व्यक्षोभयदनीकानि पाण्डवानां द्विजोत्तमः ॥११॥
11. samudramiva gharmānte vivānghoro mahānilaḥ ,
vyakṣobhayadanīkāni pāṇḍavānāṁ dvijottamaḥ.
11. samudram iva gharmānte vivān ghoraḥ mahānilaḥ
vi akṣobhayat anīkāni pāṇḍavānām dvijottamaḥ
11. dvijottamaḥ pāṇḍavānām anīkāni vi akṣobhayat,
ghoraḥ mahānilaḥ gharmānte samudram iva vivān.
11. The best among the twice-born (dvijottama), Drona, agitated the armies of the Pandavas, just as a fierce, great wind blowing at the end of summer agitates the ocean.
तेऽपि सर्वप्रयत्नेन द्रोणमेव समाद्रवन् ।
बिभित्सन्तो महासेतुं वार्योघाः प्रबला इव ॥१२॥
12. te'pi sarvaprayatnena droṇameva samādravan ,
bibhitsanto mahāsetuṁ vāryoghāḥ prabalā iva.
12. te api sarvaprayatnena droṇam eva sam adravan
bibhitsantaḥ mahāsetum vāri oghāḥ prabalāḥ iva
12. te api sarvaprayatnena droṇam eva sam adravan,
prabalāḥ vāri oghāḥ mahāsetum bibhitsantaḥ iva.
12. They also, with their utmost effort, rushed directly at Drona, just as powerful torrents of water rush, desiring to breach a great dam.
वारयामास तान्द्रोणो जलौघानचलो यथा ।
पाण्डवान्समरे क्रुद्धान्पाञ्चालांश्च सकेकयान् ॥१३॥
13. vārayāmāsa tāndroṇo jalaughānacalo yathā ,
pāṇḍavānsamare kruddhānpāñcālāṁśca sakekayān.
13. vārayāmāsa tān droṇaḥ jalaughān achalaḥ yathā
pāṇḍavān samare kruddhān pāñcālān ca sakekayān
13. droṇaḥ achalaḥ yathā jalaughān,
tān pāṇḍavān samare kruddhān ca sakekayān pāñcālān vārayāmāsa.
13. Drona checked them – the enraged Pandavas and the Pancalas along with the Kekayas in battle – just as a mountain checks torrents of water.
अथापरेऽपि राजानः परावृत्य समन्ततः ।
महाबला रणे शूराः पाञ्चालानन्ववारयन् ॥१४॥
14. athāpare'pi rājānaḥ parāvṛtya samantataḥ ,
mahābalā raṇe śūrāḥ pāñcālānanvavārayan.
14. atha apare api rājānaḥ parāvṛtya samantataḥ
mahābalāḥ raṇe śūrāḥ pāñcālān anu avārayan
14. atha apare api mahābalāḥ raṇe śūrāḥ rājānaḥ parāvṛtya samantataḥ pāñcālān anu avārayan.
14. Then, other kings, mighty and valiant in battle, having turned back and surrounded them from all sides, also restrained the Pancalas.
ततो रणे नरव्याघ्रः पार्षतः पाण्डवैः सह ।
संजघानासकृद्द्रोणं बिभित्सुररिवाहिनीम् ॥१५॥
15. tato raṇe naravyāghraḥ pārṣataḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha ,
saṁjaghānāsakṛddroṇaṁ bibhitsurarivāhinīm.
15. tataḥ raṇe naravyāghraḥ pārṣataḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha
saṃjaghāna asakṛt droṇam bibhitsur arivāhinīm
15. tataḥ naravyāghraḥ pārṣataḥ pāṇḍavaiḥ saha raṇe
arivāhinīm bibhitsur droṇam asakṛt saṃjaghāna
15. Then, the tiger among men, Dhṛṣṭadyumna (pārṣata), along with the Pāṇḍavas, repeatedly struck Droṇa, intending to pierce the enemy's army.
यथैव शरवर्षाणि द्रोणो वर्षति पार्षते ।
तथैव शरवर्षाणि धृष्टद्युम्नोऽभ्यवर्षत ॥१६॥
16. yathaiva śaravarṣāṇi droṇo varṣati pārṣate ,
tathaiva śaravarṣāṇi dhṛṣṭadyumno'bhyavarṣata.
16. yathā eva śaravarṣāṇi droṇaḥ varṣati pārṣate
tathā eva śaravarṣāṇi dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ abhyavarṣata
16. yathā eva droṇaḥ pārṣate śaravarṣāṇi varṣati
tathā eva dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ śaravarṣāṇi abhyavarṣata
16. Just as Droṇa showered barrages of arrows upon Dhṛṣṭadyumna (pārṣate), so too Dhṛṣṭadyumna showered barrages of arrows.
सनिस्त्रिंशपुरोवातः शक्तिप्रासर्ष्टिसंवृतः ।
ज्याविद्युच्चापसंह्रादो धृष्टद्युम्नबलाहकः ॥१७॥
17. sanistriṁśapurovātaḥ śaktiprāsarṣṭisaṁvṛtaḥ ,
jyāvidyuccāpasaṁhrādo dhṛṣṭadyumnabalāhakaḥ.
17. saniṣtriṃśapurovātaḥ śaktiprāsarṣṭisaṃvṛtaḥ
jyāvidyuccāpasaṃhrādaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnabalāhakaḥ

17. Dhṛṣṭadyumna, like a rain-cloud (balāhaka), whose vanguard wind was his swords, whose body was enveloped by spears, javelins, and lances, and whose bowstring was lightning and bow the thunder.
शरधाराश्मवर्षाणि व्यसृजत्सर्वतोदिशम् ।
निघ्नन्रथवराश्वौघांश्छादयामास वाहिनीम् ॥१८॥
18. śaradhārāśmavarṣāṇi vyasṛjatsarvatodiśam ,
nighnanrathavarāśvaughāṁśchādayāmāsa vāhinīm.
18. śaradhārāśmavarṣāṇi vyasṛjat sarvatodiśam
nighnan rathavarāśvaughān chādayāmāsa vāhinīm
18. saḥ sarvatodiśam śaradhārāśmavarṣāṇi vyasṛjat
rathavarāśvaughān nighnan vāhinīm chādayāmāsa
18. He (Dhṛṣṭadyumna) discharged barrages of arrows, torrents, and stones in all directions, striking down excellent chariots and throngs of horses, thus covering the enemy's army.
यं यमार्छच्छरैर्द्रोणः पाण्डवानां रथव्रजम् ।
ततस्ततः शरैर्द्रोणमपाकर्षत पार्षतः ॥१९॥
19. yaṁ yamārchaccharairdroṇaḥ pāṇḍavānāṁ rathavrajam ,
tatastataḥ śarairdroṇamapākarṣata pārṣataḥ.
19. yam yam ārchat śaraiḥ droṇaḥ pāṇḍavānām rathavrajām
tataḥ tataḥ śaraiḥ droṇam apākarṣata pārṣataḥ
19. droṇaḥ yam yam pāṇḍavānām rathavrajām śaraiḥ ārchat,
tataḥ tataḥ pārṣataḥ śaraiḥ droṇam apākarṣata.
19. Whichever part of the Pāṇḍavas' chariot formation Droṇa afflicted with his arrows, from there, from that very spot, Pārṣata (Dhṛṣṭadyumna) repelled Droṇa with his arrows.
तथा तु यतमानस्य द्रोणस्य युधि भारत ।
धृष्टद्युम्नं समासाद्य त्रिधा सैन्यमभिद्यत ॥२०॥
20. tathā tu yatamānasya droṇasya yudhi bhārata ,
dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ samāsādya tridhā sainyamabhidyata.
20. tathā tu yatamānasya droṇasya yudhi bhārata
dhṛṣṭadyumnam samāsādya tridhā sainyam abhidyata
20. bhārata,
tu tathā yudhi yatamānasya droṇasya (sainyam) dhṛṣṭadyumnam samāsādya,
sainyam tridhā abhidyata.
20. But as Droṇa was thus striving in battle, O descendant of Bharata, his army, upon encountering Dhṛṣṭadyumna, was split into three divisions.
भोजमेके न्यवर्तन्त जलसंधमथापरे ।
पाण्डवैर्हन्यमानाश्च द्रोणमेवापरेऽव्रजन् ॥२१॥
21. bhojameke nyavartanta jalasaṁdhamathāpare ,
pāṇḍavairhanyamānāśca droṇamevāpare'vrajan.
21. bhojam eke nyavartanta jalasaṃdham atha apare
pāṇḍavaiḥ hanyamānāḥ ca droṇam eva apare avrajan
21. eke bhojam nyavartanta,
atha apare jalasaṃdham (nyavartanta).
ca pāṇḍavaiḥ hanyamānāḥ apare droṇam eva avrajan.
21. Some (soldiers) retreated to Bhoja, while others turned towards Jalasandha. And still others, being struck down by the Pāṇḍavas, fled specifically to Droṇa.
सैन्यान्यघटयद्यानि द्रोणस्तु रथिनां वरः ।
व्यधमच्चापि तान्यस्य धृष्टद्युम्नो महारथः ॥२२॥
22. sainyānyaghaṭayadyāni droṇastu rathināṁ varaḥ ,
vyadhamaccāpi tānyasya dhṛṣṭadyumno mahārathaḥ.
22. sainyāni aghaṭayat yāni droṇaḥ tu rathinām varaḥ
vyadhamat ca api tāni asya dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ mahārathaḥ
22. tu rathinām varaḥ droṇaḥ yāni sainyāni aghaṭayat,
(tāni) ca api asya mahārathaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ tāni vyadhamat.
22. Whatever formations of troops Droṇa, who was the foremost among charioteers, arranged, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the great charioteer, also swiftly dispersed those very formations of his.
धार्तराष्ट्रास्त्रिधाभूता वध्यन्ते पाण्डुसृञ्जयैः ।
अगोपाः पशवोऽरण्ये बहुभिः श्वापदैरिव ॥२३॥
23. dhārtarāṣṭrāstridhābhūtā vadhyante pāṇḍusṛñjayaiḥ ,
agopāḥ paśavo'raṇye bahubhiḥ śvāpadairiva.
23. dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ tridhābhūtāḥ vadhyante pāṇḍusṛñjayaiḥ
agopāḥ paśavaḥ araṇye bahubhiḥ śvāpadaiḥ iva
23. dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ tridhābhūtāḥ pāṇḍusṛñjayaiḥ vadhyante
agopāḥ paśavaḥ araṇye bahubhiḥ śvāpadaiḥ iva
23. The sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, having split into three factions, are being slaughtered by the Pāṇḍavas and Sṛñjayas, much like unprotected cattle in a forest are killed by numerous wild predators.
कालः संग्रसते योधान्धृष्टद्युम्नेन मोहितान् ।
संग्रामे तुमुले तस्मिन्निति संमेनिरे जनाः ॥२४॥
24. kālaḥ saṁgrasate yodhāndhṛṣṭadyumnena mohitān ,
saṁgrāme tumule tasminniti saṁmenire janāḥ.
24. kālaḥ saṃgrasate yodhān dhṛṣṭadyumnena mohitān
saṃgrāme tumule tasmin iti saṃmenire janāḥ
24. janāḥ iti saṃmenire kālaḥ dhṛṣṭadyumnena
mohitān yodhān tasmin tumule saṃgrāme saṃgrasate
24. People concluded, "Time is devouring the warriors who have been confounded by Dhṛṣṭadyumna in that tumultuous battle."
कुनृपस्य यथा राष्ट्रं दुर्भिक्षव्याधितस्करैः ।
द्राव्यते तद्वदापन्ना पाण्डवैस्तव वाहिनी ॥२५॥
25. kunṛpasya yathā rāṣṭraṁ durbhikṣavyādhitaskaraiḥ ,
drāvyate tadvadāpannā pāṇḍavaistava vāhinī.
25. kunṛpasya yathā rāṣṭram durbhikṣavyādhitaskaraiḥ
drāvyate tadvat āpannā pāṇḍavaiḥ tava vāhinī
25. yathā kunṛpasya rāṣṭram दुर्भिक्षव्याधितस्करैः
drāvyate tadvat tava vāhinī pāṇḍavaiḥ āpannā
25. Just as the kingdom of a bad ruler is ruined by famine, disease, and thieves, so too your army has been afflicted by the Pāṇḍavas.
अर्करश्मिप्रभिन्नेषु शस्त्रेषु कवचेषु च ।
चक्षूंषि प्रतिहन्यन्ते सैन्येन रजसा तथा ॥२६॥
26. arkaraśmiprabhinneṣu śastreṣu kavaceṣu ca ,
cakṣūṁṣi pratihanyante sainyena rajasā tathā.
26. arkarasmiprabhinneṣu śastreṣu kavaceṣu ca
cakṣūṃṣi pratihanyante sainyena rajasā tathā
26. śastreṣu kavaceṣu ca arkarasmiprabhinneṣu
cakṣūṃṣi pratihanyante tathā sainyena rajasā
26. The eyes are obstructed by the dust from the army, just as they are by the sun's rays dazzling upon the weapons and armors.
त्रिधाभूतेषु सैन्येषु वध्यमानेषु पाण्डवैः ।
अमर्षितस्ततो द्रोणः पाञ्चालान्व्यधमच्छरैः ॥२७॥
27. tridhābhūteṣu sainyeṣu vadhyamāneṣu pāṇḍavaiḥ ,
amarṣitastato droṇaḥ pāñcālānvyadhamaccharaiḥ.
27. tridhābhūteṣu sainyeṣu vadhyamāneṣu pāṇḍavaiḥ
amarṣitaḥ tataḥ droṇaḥ pāñcālān vyadhamat śaraiḥ
27. pāṇḍavaiḥ vadhyamāneṣu tridhābhūteṣu sainyeṣu
tataḥ amarṣitaḥ droṇaḥ śaraiḥ pāñcālān vyadhamat
27. As the armies, having been divided into three parts, were being slaughtered by the Pāṇḍavas, Droṇa, enraged, then completely destroyed the Pāñcālas with his arrows.
मृद्नतस्तान्यनीकानि निघ्नतश्चापि सायकैः ।
बभूव रूपं द्रोणस्य कालाग्नेरिव दीप्यतः ॥२८॥
28. mṛdnatastānyanīkāni nighnataścāpi sāyakaiḥ ,
babhūva rūpaṁ droṇasya kālāgneriva dīpyataḥ.
28. mṛdnataḥ tāni anīkāni nighnataḥ ca api sāyakaiḥ
babhūva rūpam droṇasya kālāgneḥ iva dīpyataḥ
28. tāni anīkāni mṛdnataḥ ca sāyakaiḥ nighnataḥ api
droṇasya rūpam dīpyataḥ kālāgneḥ iva babhūva
28. While he was crushing those armies and also striking them down with arrows, Droṇa's appearance became like that of the blazing fire of universal destruction (kālāgni).
रथं नागं हयं चापि पत्तिनश्च विशां पते ।
एकैकेनेषुणा संख्ये निर्बिभेद महारथः ॥२९॥
29. rathaṁ nāgaṁ hayaṁ cāpi pattinaśca viśāṁ pate ,
ekaikeneṣuṇā saṁkhye nirbibheda mahārathaḥ.
29. ratham nāgam hayam ca api pattinaḥ ca viśām pate
ekaikena iṣuṇā saṃkhye nirbibheda mahārathaḥ
29. viśām pate (he) mahārathaḥ saṃkhye ekaikena iṣuṇā
ratham nāgam hayam ca api pattinaḥ ca nirbibheda
29. O lord of the people, that great warrior (Droṇa) in battle pierced (through) chariots, elephants, horses, and even foot soldiers, each with a single arrow.
पाण्डवानां तु सैन्येषु नास्ति कश्चित्स भारत ।
दधार यो रणे बाणान्द्रोणचापच्युताञ्शितान् ॥३०॥
30. pāṇḍavānāṁ tu sainyeṣu nāsti kaścitsa bhārata ,
dadhāra yo raṇe bāṇāndroṇacāpacyutāñśitān.
30. pāṇḍavānām tu sainyeṣu na asti kaścit saḥ bhārata
dadhāra yaḥ raṇe bāṇān droṇacāpacyutān śitān
30. bhārata! tu pāṇḍavānām sainyeṣu saḥ kaścit na
asti yaḥ raṇe droṇacāpacyutān śitān bāṇān dadhāra
30. But, O Bhārata, among the Pāṇḍavas' armies, there was no one who could withstand in battle the sharp arrows shot from Droṇa's bow.
तत्पच्यमानमर्केण द्रोणसायकतापितम् ।
बभ्राम पार्षतं सैन्यं तत्र तत्रैव भारत ॥३१॥
31. tatpacyamānamarkeṇa droṇasāyakatāpitam ,
babhrāma pārṣataṁ sainyaṁ tatra tatraiva bhārata.

31. O descendant of Bharata, that army of Dhrishtadyumna, being scorched by Droṇa's arrows as if by the sun, wandered all over the place.
तथैव पार्षतेनापि काल्यमानं बलं तव ।
अभवत्सर्वतो दीप्तं शुष्कं वनमिवाग्निना ॥३२॥
32. tathaiva pārṣatenāpi kālyamānaṁ balaṁ tava ,
abhavatsarvato dīptaṁ śuṣkaṁ vanamivāgninā.
32. tathā eva pārṣatena api kālyamānam balam tava
abhavat sarvataḥ dīptam śuṣkam vanam iva agninā
32. tathā eva pārṣatena api kālyamānam tava balam
sarvataḥ abhavat śuṣkam vanam agninā iva dīptam
32. In the same way, your army, being harassed by Dhrishtadyumna, became ablaze everywhere, just like a dry forest set on fire.
वध्यमानेषु सैन्येषु द्रोणपार्षतसायकैः ।
त्यक्त्वा प्राणान्परं शक्त्या प्रायुध्यन्त स्म सैनिकाः ॥३३॥
33. vadhyamāneṣu sainyeṣu droṇapārṣatasāyakaiḥ ,
tyaktvā prāṇānparaṁ śaktyā prāyudhyanta sma sainikāḥ.

33. sainyeṣu droṇapārṣatasāyakaiḥ vadhyamāneṣu,

33. While the armies were being slaughtered by the arrows of Droṇa and Dhrishtadyumna, the soldiers, having abandoned their lives, fought with supreme strength (śakti).
तावकानां परेषां च युध्यतां भरतर्षभ ।
नासीत्कश्चिन्महाराज योऽत्याक्षीत्संयुगं भयात् ॥३४॥
34. tāvakānāṁ pareṣāṁ ca yudhyatāṁ bharatarṣabha ,
nāsītkaścinmahārāja yo'tyākṣītsaṁyugaṁ bhayāt.
34. tāvakānām pareṣām ca yudhyatām bharatarṣabha na
āsīt kaścit mahārāja yaḥ atyākṣīt saṃyugam bhayāt

34. O bull among the Bhāratas, O great king, among your warriors and those of the enemy who were fighting, there was no one who abandoned the battle out of fear.
भीमसेनं तु कौन्तेयं सोदर्याः पर्यवारयन् ।
विविंशतिश्चित्रसेनो विकर्णश्च महारथः ॥३५॥
35. bhīmasenaṁ tu kaunteyaṁ sodaryāḥ paryavārayan ,
viviṁśatiścitraseno vikarṇaśca mahārathaḥ.

35. But his own brothers surrounded Bhimasena, the son of Kunti. Vivimshati, Chitrasena, and Vikarna, the great charioteer, were among them.
विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ क्षेमधूर्तिश्च वीर्यवान् ।
त्रयाणां तव पुत्राणां त्रय एवानुयायिनः ॥३६॥
36. vindānuvindāvāvantyau kṣemadhūrtiśca vīryavān ,
trayāṇāṁ tava putrāṇāṁ traya evānuyāyinaḥ.

36. Vinda and Anuvinda, the two princes of Avanti, and the valorous Kshemadhurti - these three were the only followers for your three sons.
बाह्लीकराजस्तेजस्वी कुलपुत्रो महारथः ।
सहसेनः सहामात्यो द्रौपदेयानवारयत् ॥३७॥
37. bāhlīkarājastejasvī kulaputro mahārathaḥ ,
sahasenaḥ sahāmātyo draupadeyānavārayat.

37. The glorious King Bahlika, a noble scion and great charioteer, along with his army and ministers, held back the sons of Draupadi.
शैब्यो गोवासनो राजा योधैर्दशशतावरैः ।
काश्यस्याभिभुवः पुत्रं पराक्रान्तमवारयत् ॥३८॥
38. śaibyo govāsano rājā yodhairdaśaśatāvaraiḥ ,
kāśyasyābhibhuvaḥ putraṁ parākrāntamavārayat.

38. King Saibya Govasana, with at least a thousand warriors, checked the mighty son of Kashya, Abhibhu.
अजातशत्रुं कौन्तेयं ज्वलन्तमिव पावकम् ।
मद्राणामीश्वरः शल्यो राजा राजानमावृणोत् ॥३९॥
39. ajātaśatruṁ kaunteyaṁ jvalantamiva pāvakam ,
madrāṇāmīśvaraḥ śalyo rājā rājānamāvṛṇot.

39. King Śalya, the lord of the Madras, surrounded King Yudhiṣṭhira (ajātaśatru), Kuntī's son, who was blazing like a fire.
दुःशासनस्त्ववस्थाप्य स्वमनीकममर्षणः ।
सात्यकिं प्रययौ क्रुद्धः शूरो रथवरं युधि ॥४०॥
40. duḥśāsanastvavasthāpya svamanīkamamarṣaṇaḥ ,
sātyakiṁ prayayau kruddhaḥ śūro rathavaraṁ yudhi.
40. duḥśāsanaḥ tu avasthāpya svamanīkam amarṣaṇaḥ
sātyakim prayayau kruddhaḥ śūraḥ rathavaram yudhi

40. But the wrathful (amarṣaṇaḥ) Duḥśāsana, having stationed his own army, angrily and heroically advanced towards Sātyaki (who was on) his excellent chariot, in battle.
स्वकेनाहमनीकेन संनद्धकवचावृतः ।
चतुःशतैर्महेष्वासैश्चेकितानमवारयम् ॥४१॥
41. svakenāhamanīkena saṁnaddhakavacāvṛtaḥ ,
catuḥśatairmaheṣvāsaiścekitānamavārayam.

41. I, clad in well-prepared armor, with my own army and four hundred great archers, held back Chekitāna.
शकुनिस्तु सहानीको माद्रीपुत्रमवारयत् ।
गान्धारकैः सप्तशतैश्चापशक्तिशरासिभिः ॥४२॥
42. śakunistu sahānīko mādrīputramavārayat ,
gāndhārakaiḥ saptaśataiścāpaśaktiśarāsibhiḥ.

42. But Śakuni, with his army and seven hundred Gandhāra warriors armed with bows, spears (śakti), arrows, and swords, blocked the son of Mādrī.
विन्दानुविन्दावावन्त्यौ विराटं मत्स्यमार्छताम् ।
प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा महेष्वासौ मित्रार्थेऽभ्युद्यतौ युधि ॥४३॥
43. vindānuvindāvāvantyau virāṭaṁ matsyamārchatām ,
prāṇāṁstyaktvā maheṣvāsau mitrārthe'bhyudyatau yudhi.

43. The two great archers, Vind and Anuvinda, princes of Avanti, for the sake of their friend, stood ready in battle, having resolved to give up their lives, and attacked King Virāṭa, the Matsya.
शिखण्डिनं याज्ञसेनिं रुन्धानमपराजितम् ।
बाह्लिकः प्रतिसंयत्तः पराक्रान्तमवारयत् ॥४४॥
44. śikhaṇḍinaṁ yājñaseniṁ rundhānamaparājitam ,
bāhlikaḥ pratisaṁyattaḥ parākrāntamavārayat.

44. Bāhlika, fully prepared, prevented the unconquered and valorous Shikhaṇḍin, the son of Yajñasena, who was obstructing (him).
धृष्टद्युम्नं च पाञ्चाल्यं क्रूरैः सार्धं प्रभद्रकैः ।
आवन्त्यः सह सौवीरैः क्रुद्धरूपमवारयत् ॥४५॥
45. dhṛṣṭadyumnaṁ ca pāñcālyaṁ krūraiḥ sārdhaṁ prabhadrakaiḥ ,
āvantyaḥ saha sauvīraiḥ kruddharūpamavārayat.

45. And the prince of Avanti, along with the Sauviras, prevented Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the Pāñcāla, who was accompanied by the fierce Prabhadrakas and had assumed an enraged form.
घटोत्कचं तथा शूरं राक्षसं क्रूरयोधिनम् ।
अलायुधोऽद्रवत्तूर्णं क्रुद्धमायान्तमाहवे ॥४६॥
46. ghaṭotkacaṁ tathā śūraṁ rākṣasaṁ krūrayodhinam ,
alāyudho'dravattūrṇaṁ kruddhamāyāntamāhave.

alāyudhaḥ adravat tūrṇam kruddham āyāntam āhave

46. And Alāyudha quickly rushed towards the brave demon Ghaṭotkaca, a fierce fighter, who was enraged and approaching in battle.
अलम्बुसं राक्षसेन्द्रं कुन्तिभोजो महारथः ।
सैन्येन महता युक्तः क्रुद्धरूपमवारयत् ॥४७॥
47. alambusaṁ rākṣasendraṁ kuntibhojo mahārathaḥ ,
sainyena mahatā yuktaḥ kruddharūpamavārayat.

47. Kuntibhoja, a great warrior, accompanied by a large army, resisted Alambusa, the lord of the Rākṣasas, who was in a furious form.
सैन्धवः पृष्ठतस्त्वासीत्सर्वसैन्यस्य भारत ।
रक्षितः परमेष्वासैः कृपप्रभृतिभी रथैः ॥४८॥
48. saindhavaḥ pṛṣṭhatastvāsītsarvasainyasya bhārata ,
rakṣitaḥ parameṣvāsaiḥ kṛpaprabhṛtibhī rathaiḥ.
48. saindhavaḥ pṛṣṭhataḥ tu āsīt sarvasainyasya bhārata
rakṣitaḥ parameṣvāsaiḥ kṛpaprabhṛtibhiḥ rathaiḥ
48. bhārata saindhavaḥ tu sarvasainyasya pṛṣṭhataḥ āsīt,
kṛpaprabhṛtibhiḥ parameṣvāsaiḥ rathaiḥ rakṣitaḥ
48. O Bhārata, Saindhava (Jayadratha) was indeed at the rear of the entire army, protected by Kṛpa and other excellent archers on their chariots.
तस्यास्तां चक्ररक्षौ द्वौ सैन्धवस्य बृहत्तमौ ।
द्रौणिर्दक्षिणतो राजन्सूतपुत्रश्च वामतः ॥४९॥
49. tasyāstāṁ cakrarakṣau dvau saindhavasya bṛhattamau ,
drauṇirdakṣiṇato rājansūtaputraśca vāmataḥ.

drauṇiḥ dakṣiṇataḥ rājan sūtaputraḥ ca vāmataḥ
49. rājan,
saindhavasya tasya dvau bṛhattamau cakrarakṣau āstām: dakṣiṇataḥ drauṇiḥ ca vāmataḥ sūtaputraḥ
49. O King, Saindhava had two most mighty wheel-guards: Drauṇi (Aśvatthāman) on his right and the son of the charioteer (Karṇa) on his left.
पृष्ठगोपास्तु तस्यासन्सौमदत्तिपुरोगमाः ।
कृपश्च वृषसेनश्च शलः शल्यश्च दुर्जयः ॥५०॥
50. pṛṣṭhagopāstu tasyāsansaumadattipurogamāḥ ,
kṛpaśca vṛṣasenaśca śalaḥ śalyaśca durjayaḥ.
50. pṛṣṭhagopāḥ tu tasya āsan saumadattipurhogamāḥ
kṛpaḥ ca vṛṣasenaḥ ca śalaḥ śalyaḥ ca durjayaḥ

50. His rearguards, led by Saumadatti (Bhuriśravas), were Kṛpa, Vṛṣasena, Śala, and the unconquerable Śalya.
नीतिमन्तो महेष्वासाः सर्वे युद्धविशारदाः ।
सैन्धवस्य विधायैवं रक्षां युयुधिरे तदा ॥५१॥
51. nītimanto maheṣvāsāḥ sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ ,
saindhavasya vidhāyaivaṁ rakṣāṁ yuyudhire tadā.
51. nītimantaḥ maheṣvāsāḥ sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ
saindhavasya vidhāya evam rakṣām yuyudhire tadā
51. nītimantaḥ maheṣvāsāḥ sarve yuddhaviśāradāḥ

51. All those who were wise, great archers, and skilled in battle, having thus provided protection for Saindhava (Jayadratha), then fought.
