धृतराष्ट्र उवाच ।
दुर्योधन विजानीहि यत्त्वां वक्ष्यामि पुत्रक ।
उत्पथं मन्यसे मार्गमनभिज्ञ इवाध्वगः ॥१॥
1. dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca ,
duryodhana vijānīhi yattvāṁ vakṣyāmi putraka ,
utpathaṁ manyase mārgamanabhijña ivādhvagaḥ.
1. dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ uvāca | duryodhana vijānīhi yat tvām vakṣyāmi
putrakā | utpatham manyase mārgam anabhijñaḥ iva adhvagāḥ
1. Dhritarashtra said: Duryodhana, my dear son, understand what I am about to tell you. You consider this path to be the wrong one, like a traveler who is ignorant of the way.
पञ्चानां पाण्डुपुत्राणां यत्तेजः प्रमिमीषसि ।
पञ्चानामिव भूतानां महतां सुमहात्मनाम् ॥२॥
2. pañcānāṁ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṁ yattejaḥ pramimīṣasi ,
pañcānāmiva bhūtānāṁ mahatāṁ sumahātmanām.
2. pañcānām pāṇḍuputrāṇām yat tejaḥ pramimīṣasi
| pañcānām iva bhūtānām mahatām sumahātmanām
2. You underestimate the prowess of the five sons of Pāṇḍu, just as one would underestimate the immense power of the five great elements, which possess a magnificent nature (ātman).
युधिष्ठिरं हि कौन्तेयं परं धर्ममिहास्थितम् ।
परां गतिमसंप्रेक्ष्य न त्वं वेत्तुमिहार्हसि ॥३॥
3. yudhiṣṭhiraṁ hi kaunteyaṁ paraṁ dharmamihāsthitam ,
parāṁ gatimasaṁprekṣya na tvaṁ vettumihārhasi.
3. yudhiṣṭhiram hi kaunteyam param dharmam iha āsthitam
| parām gatim asaṃprekṣya na tvam vettum iha arhasi
3. You are not able to understand Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, who is established in the supreme natural law (dharma), without properly discerning the ultimate goal.
भीमसेनं च कौन्तेयं यस्य नास्ति समो बले ।
रणान्तकं तर्कयसे महावातमिव द्रुमः ॥४॥
4. bhīmasenaṁ ca kaunteyaṁ yasya nāsti samo bale ,
raṇāntakaṁ tarkayase mahāvātamiva drumaḥ.
4. bhīmasenam ca kaunteyam yasya na asti samaḥ
bale raṇāntakam tarkayase mahāvātam iva drumaḥ
4. You consider Bhimasena, the son of Kunti, who has no equal in strength, to be the ender of battles, just as a tree faces a great storm.
सर्वशस्त्रभृतां श्रेष्ठं मेरुं शिखरिणामिव ।
युधि गाण्डीवधन्वानं को नु युध्येत बुद्धिमान् ॥५॥
5. sarvaśastrabhṛtāṁ śreṣṭhaṁ meruṁ śikhariṇāmiva ,
yudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvānaṁ ko nu yudhyeta buddhimān.
5. sarvaśastrabṛtām śreṣṭham merum śikhariṇām iva
yudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvānam kaḥ nu yudhyeta buddhimān
5. Who among the wise would indeed fight in battle against Arjuna, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, who is the best among all weapon-bearers, like Mount Meru among mountains?
धृष्टद्युम्नश्च पाञ्चाल्यः कमिवाद्य न शातयेत् ।
शत्रुमध्ये शरान्मुञ्चन्देवराडशनीमिव ॥६॥
6. dhṛṣṭadyumnaśca pāñcālyaḥ kamivādya na śātayet ,
śatrumadhye śarānmuñcandevarāḍaśanīmiva.
6. dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ ca pāñcālyaḥ kam iva adya na śātayet
śatrumadhye śarān muñcan devarāṭ aśanīm iva
6. And Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the prince of Pañcāla, releasing arrows amidst the enemies like the king of gods (Indra) casts his thunderbolt, whom indeed would he not cut down today?
सात्यकिश्चापि दुर्धर्षः संमतोऽन्धकवृष्णिषु ।
ध्वंसयिष्यति ते सेनां पाण्डवेयहिते रतः ॥७॥
7. sātyakiścāpi durdharṣaḥ saṁmato'ndhakavṛṣṇiṣu ,
dhvaṁsayiṣyati te senāṁ pāṇḍaveyahite rataḥ.
7. sātyakiḥ ca api durdharṣaḥ saṃmataḥ andhakavṛṣṇiṣu
dhvaṃsayiṣyati te senām pāṇḍaveyahite rataḥ
7. And Sātyaki, the unconquerable hero, honored among the Andhakas and Vṛṣṇis, who is devoted to the welfare of the Pāṇḍavas, will also certainly destroy your army.
यः पुनः प्रतिमानेन त्रीँल्लोकानतिरिच्यते ।
तं कृष्णं पुण्डरीकाक्षं को नु युध्येत बुद्धिमान् ॥८॥
8. yaḥ punaḥ pratimānena trīँllokānatiricyate ,
taṁ kṛṣṇaṁ puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ ko nu yudhyeta buddhimān.
8. yaḥ punaḥ pratimānena trīn lokān atiricyate tam
kṛṣṇam puṇḍarīkākṣam kaḥ nu yudhyeta buddhimān
8. Moreover, what intelligent person would fight against that lotus-eyed Krishna, who by any measure surpasses the three worlds?
एकतो ह्यस्य दाराश्च ज्ञातयश्च सबान्धवाः ।
आत्मा च पृथिवी चेयमेकतश्च धनंजयः ॥९॥
9. ekato hyasya dārāśca jñātayaśca sabāndhavāḥ ,
ātmā ca pṛthivī ceyamekataśca dhanaṁjayaḥ.
9. ekataḥ hi asya dārāḥ ca jñātayaḥ ca sabāndhavāḥ
ātmā ca pṛthivī ca iyam ekataḥ ca dhananjayaḥ
9. Indeed, on one side are his wives, relatives, and kinsmen; his very self (ātman) and this entire earth. And on the other side is Dhananjaya (Arjuna).
वासुदेवोऽपि दुर्धर्षो यतात्मा यत्र पाण्डवः ।
अविषह्यं पृथिव्यापि तद्बलं यत्र केशवः ॥१०॥
10. vāsudevo'pi durdharṣo yatātmā yatra pāṇḍavaḥ ,
aviṣahyaṁ pṛthivyāpi tadbalaṁ yatra keśavaḥ.
10. vāsudevaḥ api durdharṣaḥ yata-ātmā yatra pāṇḍavaḥ
aviṣahyam pṛthivyā api tat balam yatra keśavaḥ
10. Where the Pandava (Arjuna) is, there is also Vasudeva (Krishna), who is self-controlled (yata-ātman) and invincible. Where Keshav (Krishna) is, that power is irresistible even for the earth.
तिष्ठ तात सतां वाक्ये सुहृदामर्थवादिनाम् ।
वृद्धं शांतनवं भीष्मं तितिक्षस्व पितामहम् ॥११॥
11. tiṣṭha tāta satāṁ vākye suhṛdāmarthavādinām ,
vṛddhaṁ śāṁtanavaṁ bhīṣmaṁ titikṣasva pitāmaham.
11. tiṣṭha tāta satām vākye suhṛdām arthavādinām
vṛddham śāntanavam bhīṣmam titikṣasva pitāmaham
11. Dear one (tāta), abide by the counsel of noble friends who speak what is beneficial. Endure your grandfather, the aged Bhishma, son of Shantanu.
मां च ब्रुवाणं शुश्रूष कुरूणामर्थवादिनम् ।
द्रोणं कृपं विकर्णं च महाराजं च बाह्लिकम् ॥१२॥
12. māṁ ca bruvāṇaṁ śuśrūṣa kurūṇāmarthavādinam ,
droṇaṁ kṛpaṁ vikarṇaṁ ca mahārājaṁ ca bāhlikam.
12. mām ca bruvāṇam śuśrūṣa kurūṇām arthavādinam
droṇam kṛpam vikarṇam ca mahārājam ca bāhlikam
12. And listen to me, who speaks for the welfare of the Kurus, as well as to Droṇa, Kṛpa, Vikarṇa, and the great king Bāhlika.
एते ह्यपि यथैवाहं मन्तुमर्हसि तांस्तथा ।
सर्वे धर्मविदो ह्येते तुल्यस्नेहाश्च भारत ॥१३॥
13. ete hyapi yathaivāhaṁ mantumarhasi tāṁstathā ,
sarve dharmavido hyete tulyasnehāśca bhārata.
13. ete hi api yathā eva aham mantum arhasi tān tathā
sarve dharmavidaḥ hi ete tulyasnehāḥ ca bhārata
13. Indeed, you should regard them just as you regard me. For all these, O Bhārata, are knowers of (dharma) natural law and possess equal affection.
यत्तद्विराटनगरे सह भ्रातृभिरग्रतः ।
उत्सृज्य गाः सुसंत्रस्तं बलं ते समशीर्यत ॥१४॥
14. yattadvirāṭanagare saha bhrātṛbhiragrataḥ ,
utsṛjya gāḥ susaṁtrastaṁ balaṁ te samaśīryata.
14. yat tat virāṭanagare saha bhrātṛbhiḥ agrataḥ
utsṛjya gāḥ susaṃtrastam balam te samaśīryata
14. That army of yours, which was utterly terrified and abandoned the cows in the city of Virāṭa, with your brothers leading the way, was scattered.
यच्चैव तस्मिन्नगरे श्रूयते महदद्भुतम् ।
एकस्य च बहूनां च पर्याप्तं तन्निदर्शनम् ॥१५॥
15. yaccaiva tasminnagare śrūyate mahadadbhutam ,
ekasya ca bahūnāṁ ca paryāptaṁ tannidarśanam.
15. yat ca eva tasmin nagare śrūyate mahat adbhutam
ekasya ca bahūnām ca paryāptam tat nidarśanam
15. And that great marvel which is recounted regarding that city is a sufficient example both for one individual and for many.
अर्जुनस्तत्तथाकार्षीत्किं पुनः सर्व एव ते ।
सभ्रातॄनभिजानीहि वृत्त्या च प्रतिपादय ॥१६॥
16. arjunastattathākārṣītkiṁ punaḥ sarva eva te ,
sabhrātṝnabhijānīhi vṛttyā ca pratipādaya.
16. arjunaḥ tat tathā akārṣīt kim punaḥ sarve eva
te sabhrātṝn abhijānīhi vṛttyā ca pratipādaya
16. Arjuna acted in that manner, so how much more will all of them (the Pāṇḍavas and their allies). Therefore, you should recognize them along with their brothers and determine their character through their actions.
