The ministers said: 'O King of kings, then that king, after placing the snake on the shoulder of that sage who was famished by hunger, returned to his own city.'

Indeed, to that sage was born a son, on a cow, named Śṛṅgi. He was highly renowned, greatly effulgent, of fierce prowess, and exceedingly wrathful.

3.
That sage (Śamīka), having approached Brahmā, indeed performed worship. Subsequently, having been granted permission, Śṛṅgī went there and then heard from his friend how his father (Śamīka) had been thus insulted by your father (King Parīkṣit).

O Janamejaya, O tiger among the Kurus, (Śṛṅgī heard that) your father (Parīkṣit) had made (Śamīka) carry on his shoulder a dead, hanging snake, though he (Śamīka) had committed no offense.

5.
O King (Janamejaya), (Śṛṅgī heard how your father had insulted) that sage (Śamīka) who was exceedingly devout, the foremost among ascetics, one who had conquered his senses, pure, and moreover, engaged in astonishing spiritual practices.

6.
(He heard about that sage) whose self was illuminated by austerity, who was restrained in his own body and senses, of virtuous conduct, of noble speech, very steady, and free from avarice.

(He heard about that sage who was also) noble, free from envy, aged, established in the vow of silence, a refuge for all beings, and who had been wronged by your father.

8.
Then, upon hearing that, the sage's son, who, though a boy, possessed great spiritual power and was considered superior even by elders, became filled with anger and cursed your father.

9.
Having quickly touched water, he then, as if blazing with his spiritual power, angrily spoke these words, directing them at your father.

10.
The serpent Takṣaka, enraged, will destroy with his spiritual power that sinful person who placed a dead snake upon my innocent teacher. O sinful one, behold the strength of my ascetic power: within seven nights from today, he will perish!

Having said this, he went to where his father was. And upon seeing his father, he reported that curse to him.

12.
And that preeminent sage (his father) also sent a message to your father (King Parikshit), saying: 'You have been cursed by my son. O King, be vigilant! O great King, Takṣaka will destroy you with his potent power!'

13.
O Janamejaya, your father, upon hearing that terrible speech, became greatly terrified of Takṣaka, the foremost of serpents, and took precautions.

Then, on that very seventh day, when it had arrived, the brahmin sage Kaśyapa desired to go to the king's presence.

15.
Then, at that time, Takṣaka, the chief of serpents, saw Kaśyapa. Approaching him quickly, the chief of serpents said to Kaśyapa: 'Where are you going in such a hurry, sir? And what task do you intend to accomplish?'

With eyes like lotus petals, the king repeatedly let out long, hot sighs and continuously shed tears from his eyes. Then, the protector of the earth, overwhelmed with sorrow and grief, spoke.

What would he lose if that king were to live, through the grace of Kaśyapa and the good counsel of the ministers?

Indeed, this is a great transgression of the wicked Takṣaka, who gave wealth to the brahmin (Kaśyapa) with the intention that he should not revive the king.
