शल्य उवाच ।
अथैनां रुपिणीं साध्वीमुपातिष्ठदुपश्रुतिः ।
तां वयोरूपसंपन्नां दृष्ट्वा देवीमुपस्थिताम् ॥१॥

Shalya said: Then the oracle (upaśruti) approached that virtuous lady (Damayantī), who had manifested in a visible form. Having seen that divine lady (Damayantī), who was endowed with youth and beauty and was standing nearby...
इन्द्राणी संप्रहृष्टा सा संपूज्यैनामपृच्छत ।
इच्छामि त्वामहं ज्ञातुं का त्वं ब्रूहि वरानने ॥२॥

2. indrāṇī saṁprahṛṣṭā sā saṁpūjyaināmapṛcchata ,
icchāmi tvāmahaṁ jñātuṁ kā tvaṁ brūhi varānane.

Greatly delighted, Indrāṇī honored her and then asked, "O beautiful-faced one, I wish to know who you are. Please tell me."
उपश्रुतिरुवाच ।
उपश्रुतिरहं देवि तवान्तिकमुपागता ।
दर्शनं चैव संप्राप्ता तव सत्येन तोषिता ॥३॥
उपश्रुतिरहं देवि तवान्तिकमुपागता ।
दर्शनं चैव संप्राप्ता तव सत्येन तोषिता ॥३॥

upaśrutirahaṁ devi tavāntikamupāgatā ,
darśanaṁ caiva saṁprāptā tava satyena toṣitā.

Upaśruti replied, "O Goddess, I am Upaśruti, and I have come into your presence. I have indeed been granted your vision and am satisfied by your truthfulness."
पतिव्रतासि युक्ता च यमेन नियमेन च ।
दर्शयिष्यामि ते शक्रं देवं वृत्रनिषूदनम् ।
क्षिप्रमन्वेहि भद्रं ते द्रक्ष्यसे सुरसत्तमम् ॥४॥
दर्शयिष्यामि ते शक्रं देवं वृत्रनिषूदनम् ।
क्षिप्रमन्वेहि भद्रं ते द्रक्ष्यसे सुरसत्तमम् ॥४॥
4. pativratāsi yuktā ca yamena niyamena ca ,
darśayiṣyāmi te śakraṁ devaṁ vṛtraniṣūdanam ,
kṣipramanvehi bhadraṁ te drakṣyase surasattamam.

"You are a devoted wife (pativratā), endowed with discipline (niyama) and self-control (yama). I will show you Śakra, the god who slew Vṛtra. Follow me quickly; may good fortune be yours. You will see the best of the gods."
शल्य उवाच ।
ततस्तां प्रस्थितां देवीमिन्द्राणी सा समन्वगात् ।
देवारण्यान्यतिक्रम्य पर्वतांश्च बहूंस्ततः ।
हिमवन्तमतिक्रम्य उत्तरं पार्श्वमागमत् ॥५॥
ततस्तां प्रस्थितां देवीमिन्द्राणी सा समन्वगात् ।
देवारण्यान्यतिक्रम्य पर्वतांश्च बहूंस्ततः ।

tatastāṁ prasthitāṁ devīmindrāṇī sā samanvagāt ,
devāraṇyānyatikramya parvatāṁśca bahūṁstataḥ ,
himavantamatikramya uttaraṁ pārśvamāgamat.

Śalya narrated, "Then Indrāṇī followed that goddess who had departed. From there, having crossed divine forests and many mountains, and having traversed the Himalayas (Himavat), she reached the northern region."
समुद्रं च समासाद्य बहुयोजनविस्तृतम् ।
आससाद महाद्वीपं नानाद्रुमलतावृतम् ॥६॥

Having reached the ocean, which extended for many yojanas, he arrived at a great island covered with various trees and creepers.
तत्रापश्यत्सरो दिव्यं नानाशकुनिभिर्वृतम् ।
शतयोजनविस्तीर्णं तावदेवायतं शुभम् ॥७॥

7. tatrāpaśyatsaro divyaṁ nānāśakunibhirvṛtam ,
śatayojanavistīrṇaṁ tāvadevāyataṁ śubham.

There he saw a divine lake, surrounded by various birds, which was a hundred yojanas wide, equally long, and auspicious.
तत्र दिव्यानि पद्मानि पञ्चवर्णानि भारत ।
षट्पदैरुपगीतानि प्रफुल्लानि सहस्रशः ॥८॥

8. tatra divyāni padmāni pañcavarṇāni bhārata ,
ṣaṭpadairupagītāni praphullāni sahasraśaḥ.

There, O Bhārata, were divine lotuses of five colors, hymned by bees, and blooming by the thousands.
पद्मस्य भित्त्वा नालं च विवेश सहिता तया ।
बिसतन्तुप्रविष्टं च तत्रापश्यच्छतक्रतुम् ॥९॥
बिसतन्तुप्रविष्टं च तत्रापश्यच्छतक्रतुम् ॥९॥
9. padmasya bhittvā nālaṁ ca viveśa sahitā tayā ,
bisatantupraviṣṭaṁ ca tatrāpaśyacchatakratum.

Having pierced the lotus's stalk, he entered along with her. And having penetrated the lotus's fibers, he saw Śatakratu (Indra) there.
तं दृष्ट्वा च सुसूक्ष्मेण रूपेणावस्थितं प्रभुम् ।
सूक्ष्मरूपधरा देवी बभूवोपश्रुतिश्च सा ॥१०॥

10. taṁ dṛṣṭvā ca susūkṣmeṇa rūpeṇāvasthitaṁ prabhum ,
sūkṣmarūpadharā devī babhūvopaśrutiśca sā.

tam dṛṣṭvā ca susūkṣmeṇa rūpeṇa avasthitam prabhum

And having seen that lord, who was present in a very subtle form, the goddess herself assumed a subtle form and became an upaśruti (a celestial voice).
इन्द्रं तुष्टाव चेन्द्राणी विश्रुतैः पूर्वकर्मभिः ।
स्तूयमानस्ततो देवः शचीमाह पुरंदरः ॥११॥

11. indraṁ tuṣṭāva cendrāṇī viśrutaiḥ pūrvakarmabhiḥ ,
stūyamānastato devaḥ śacīmāha puraṁdaraḥ.

indram tuṣṭāva ca indrāṇī viśrutaiḥ pūrvakarmabhiḥ
stūyamānaḥ tataḥ devaḥ śacīm āha purandaraḥ

Indrāṇī praised Indra for his renowned past deeds. Then, the god Purandara (Indra), being thus praised, spoke to Śacī.
किमर्थमसि संप्राप्ता विज्ञातश्च कथं त्वहम् ।
ततः सा कथयामास नहुषस्य विचेष्टितम् ॥१२॥

12. kimarthamasi saṁprāptā vijñātaśca kathaṁ tvaham ,
tataḥ sā kathayāmāsa nahuṣasya viceṣṭitam.

kimartham asi samprāptā vijñātaḥ ca katham tu
aham tataḥ sā kathayāmāsa nahuṣasya viceṣṭitam

"For what reason have you arrived, and how have you come to know me?" Then she recounted Nahuṣa's improper conduct.
इन्द्रत्वं त्रिषु लोकेषु प्राप्य वीर्यमदान्वितः ।
दर्पाविष्टश्च दुष्टात्मा मामुवाच शतक्रतो ।
उपतिष्ठ मामिति क्रूरः कालं च कृतवान्मम ॥१३॥
दर्पाविष्टश्च दुष्टात्मा मामुवाच शतक्रतो ।
उपतिष्ठ मामिति क्रूरः कालं च कृतवान्मम ॥१३॥
13. indratvaṁ triṣu lokeṣu prāpya vīryamadānvitaḥ ,
darpāviṣṭaśca duṣṭātmā māmuvāca śatakrato ,
upatiṣṭha māmiti krūraḥ kālaṁ ca kṛtavānmama.

indratvam triṣu lokeṣu prāpya
vīryamadānvitaḥ darpāviṣṭaḥ ca duṣṭātmā

iti krūraḥ kālam ca kṛtavān mama
vīryamadānvitaḥ darpāviṣṭaḥ ca duṣṭātmā

Having obtained the position of Indra (indratva) in the three worlds, and being filled with the intoxication of power and consumed by arrogance, that evil-minded Nahuṣa said to me, "O Śatakratu (Indra), serve me!" That cruel fellow also set a deadline for me.
यदि न त्रास्यसि विभो करिष्यति स मां वशे ।
एतेन चाहं संतप्ता प्राप्ता शक्र तवान्तिकम् ।
जहि रौद्रं महाबाहो नहुषं पापनिश्चयम् ॥१४॥
एतेन चाहं संतप्ता प्राप्ता शक्र तवान्तिकम् ।
जहि रौद्रं महाबाहो नहुषं पापनिश्चयम् ॥१४॥
14. yadi na trāsyasi vibho kariṣyati sa māṁ vaśe ,
etena cāhaṁ saṁtaptā prāptā śakra tavāntikam ,
jahi raudraṁ mahābāho nahuṣaṁ pāpaniścayam.

jahi raudraṁ mahābāho nahuṣaṁ pāpaniścayam.

yadi na trāsyasi vibho kariṣyati sa

14.
If you do not protect me, O all-pervading lord, he will subjugate me. Distressed by this, O Śakra, I have come to your presence. O mighty-armed one, slay the fierce Nahuṣa, who is determined to commit evil (pāpa).
प्रकाशयस्व चात्मानं दैत्यदानवसूदन ।
तेजः समाप्नुहि विभो देवराज्यं प्रशाधि च ॥१५॥

Manifest your true self (ātman), O destroyer of Daityas and Dānavas. Regain your power and glory (tejas), O lord, and rule the kingdom of the devas.
