वैशंपायन उवाच ।
ततः समुद्रे तीर्थानि दक्षिणे भरतर्षभः ।
अभ्यगच्छत्सुपुण्यानि शोभितानि तपस्विभिः ॥१॥
1. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
tataḥ samudre tīrthāni dakṣiṇe bharatarṣabhaḥ ,
abhyagacchatsupuṇyāni śobhitāni tapasvibhiḥ.

1. Vaiśampāyana said: Then, the best among the Bhāratas (Arjuna) proceeded to the extremely holy pilgrimage places (tīrtha) in the southern region of the ocean, which were adorned by ascetics.
वर्जयन्ति स्म तीर्थानि पञ्च तत्र तु तापसाः ।
आचीर्णानि तु यान्यासन्पुरस्तात्तु तपस्विभिः ॥२॥
2. varjayanti sma tīrthāni pañca tatra tu tāpasāḥ ,
ācīrṇāni tu yānyāsanpurastāttu tapasvibhiḥ.

2. However, there were five pilgrimage places (tīrtha) that ascetics used to avoid, even though these very places had formerly been frequented by other ascetics.
अगस्त्यतीर्थं सौभद्रं पौलोमं च सुपावनम् ।
कारंधमं प्रसन्नं च हयमेधफलं च यत् ।
भारद्वाजस्य तीर्थं च पापप्रशमनं महत् ॥३॥
3. agastyatīrthaṁ saubhadraṁ paulomaṁ ca supāvanam ,
kāraṁdhamaṁ prasannaṁ ca hayamedhaphalaṁ ca yat ,
bhāradvājasya tīrthaṁ ca pāpapraśamanaṁ mahat.
3. agastyatīrtham saubhadram paulomam ca
supāvanam | kāraṃdhamam prasannam
ca hayamedhaphalam ca yat | bhāradvājasya
tīrtham ca pāpapraśamanam mahat
3. agastyatīrtham saubhadram ca paulomam

3. There are the Agastya-tīrtha, the Saubhadra-tīrtha, and the Pauloma-tīrtha, which are very purifying. Also the Kārandhama-tīrtha, the Prasanna-tīrtha, and that which yields the fruit of a horse-Vedic ritual (hayamedha). And there is the great Bhāradvāja-tīrtha, which removes sins.
विविक्तान्युपलक्ष्याथ तानि तीर्थानि पाण्डवः ।
दृष्ट्वा च वर्ज्यमानानि मुनिभिर्धर्मबुद्धिभिः ॥४॥
4. viviktānyupalakṣyātha tāni tīrthāni pāṇḍavaḥ ,
dṛṣṭvā ca varjyamānāni munibhirdharmabuddhibhiḥ.

4. Then, the Pandava (Pāṇḍava), having noticed those secluded sacred places (tīrthas), and having seen them being avoided by sages (munis) who possessed a strong sense of what is right (dharma)...
तपस्विनस्ततोऽपृच्छत्प्राज्ञलिः कुरुनन्दनः ।
तीर्थानीमानि वर्ज्यन्ते किमर्थं ब्रह्मवादिभिः ॥५॥
5. tapasvinastato'pṛcchatprājñaliḥ kurunandanaḥ ,
tīrthānīmāni varjyante kimarthaṁ brahmavādibhiḥ.
5. tapasvinaḥ tataḥ apṛcchat prāñjaliḥ kurunandanaḥ
tīrthāni imāni varjyante kim artham brahmavādibhiḥ
5. Then, the delight of the Kurus (Arjuna), with folded hands (prāñjaliḥ), asked the ascetics: 'For what reason are these sacred places (tīrthas) avoided by those who speak of the Absolute Truth (brahman)?'
तापसा ऊचुः ।
ग्राहाः पञ्च वसन्त्येषु हरन्ति च तपोधनान् ।
अत एतानि वर्ज्यन्ते तीर्थानि कुरुनन्दन ॥६॥
6. tāpasā ūcuḥ ,
grāhāḥ pañca vasantyeṣu haranti ca tapodhanān ,
ata etāni varjyante tīrthāni kurunandana.
6. tāpasāḥ ūcuḥ grāhāḥ pañca vasanti eṣu haranti ca
tapodhanān ataḥ etāni varjyante tīrthāni kurunandana
6. The ascetics replied: 'Five crocodiles (grāhas) live in these (waters), and they snatch away those whose wealth is austerity (tapas). Therefore, O delight of the Kurus (kurunandana), these sacred places (tīrthas) are avoided.'
वैशंपायन उवाच ।
तेषां श्रुत्वा महाबाहुर्वार्यमाणस्तपोधनैः ।
जगाम तानि तीर्थानि द्रष्टुं पुरुषसत्तमः ॥७॥
7. vaiśaṁpāyana uvāca ,
teṣāṁ śrutvā mahābāhurvāryamāṇastapodhanaiḥ ,
jagāma tāni tīrthāni draṣṭuṁ puruṣasattamaḥ.
7. vaiśampāyanaḥ uvāca teṣām śrutvā mahābāhuḥ vāryamāṇaḥ
tapodhanaiḥ jagāma tāni tīrthāni draṣṭum puruṣasattamaḥ
7. Vaiśampāyana said: Having heard their words, that best of men (puruṣasattamaḥ), the mighty-armed (mahābāhuḥ) (Arjuna), went to see those sacred places (tīrthas), even though he was being dissuaded by the ascetics (tapodhanas).
ततः सौभद्रमासाद्य महर्षेस्तीर्थमुत्तमम् ।
विगाह्य तरसा शूरः स्नानं चक्रे परंतपः ॥८॥
8. tataḥ saubhadramāsādya maharṣestīrthamuttamam ,
vigāhya tarasā śūraḥ snānaṁ cakre paraṁtapaḥ.
8. tataḥ saubhadram āsādya maharṣeḥ tīrtham uttamam
vigāhya tarasā śūraḥ snānam cakre paraṃtapaḥ
8. Then, the heroic conqueror of enemies, having quickly reached the excellent sacred bathing place associated with the great sage Saubhadra, performed his bath.
अथ तं पुरुषव्याघ्रमन्तर्जलचरो महान् ।
निजग्राह जले ग्राहः कुन्तीपुत्रं धनंजयम् ॥९॥
9. atha taṁ puruṣavyāghramantarjalacaro mahān ,
nijagrāha jale grāhaḥ kuntīputraṁ dhanaṁjayam.
9. atha tam puruṣavyāghram antarjalacaraḥ mahān
nijagrāha jale grāhaḥ kuntīputram dhanaṃjayam
9. Then, a great aquatic creature (antarjalacara), a crocodile (grāha), seized that tiger among men (puruṣavyāghra), Dhananjaya, the son of Kunti (Kuntīputra), in the water.
स तमादाय कौन्तेयो विस्फुरन्तं जलेचरम् ।
उदतिष्ठन्महाबाहुर्बलेन बलिनां वरः ॥१०॥
10. sa tamādāya kaunteyo visphurantaṁ jalecaram ,
udatiṣṭhanmahābāhurbalena balināṁ varaḥ.
10. saḥ tam ādāya kaunteyaḥ visphurantam jalacaram
udatiṣṭhat mahābāhuḥ balena balinām varaḥ
10. He, the son of Kunti (Kaunteya), the mighty-armed (mahābāhu) and best among the strong, taking that aquatic creature (jalacara) which was thrashing about, rose up.
उत्कृष्ट एव तु ग्राहः सोऽर्जुनेन यशस्विना ।
बभूव नारी कल्याणी सर्वाभरणभूषिता ।
दीप्यमाना श्रिया राजन्दिव्यरूपा मनोरमा ॥११॥
11. utkṛṣṭa eva tu grāhaḥ so'rjunena yaśasvinā ,
babhūva nārī kalyāṇī sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā ,
dīpyamānā śriyā rājandivyarūpā manoramā.
11. utkṛṣṭaḥ eva tu grāhaḥ saḥ arjunena
yaśasvinā babhūva nārī
kalyāṇī sarvābharaṇabhūṣitā dīpyamānā
śriyā rājan divyarūpā manoramā
11. But that crocodile (grāha), once pulled out by the illustrious Arjuna, immediately became a beautiful (kalyāṇī) woman, adorned with all ornaments, shining brightly with splendor, O King, and possessing a divine, enchanting form.
तदद्भुतं महद्दृष्ट्वा कुन्तीपुत्रो धनंजयः ।
तां स्त्रियं परमप्रीत इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१२॥
12. tadadbhutaṁ mahaddṛṣṭvā kuntīputro dhanaṁjayaḥ ,
tāṁ striyaṁ paramaprīta idaṁ vacanamabravīt.
12. tat adbhutam mahat dṛṣṭvā kuntīputraḥ dhanañjayaḥ
tām striyam paramaprītaḥ idam vacanam abravīt
12. Seeing that great wonder, Arjuna (Dhanañjaya), the son of Kunti, greatly pleased with that woman, spoke these words.
का वै त्वमसि कल्याणि कुतो वासि जलेचरी ।
किमर्थं च महत्पापमिदं कृतवती पुरा ॥१३॥
13. kā vai tvamasi kalyāṇi kuto vāsi jalecarī ,
kimarthaṁ ca mahatpāpamidaṁ kṛtavatī purā.
13. kā vai tvam asi kalyāṇi kutaḥ vā asi jalecarī
kimartham ca mahat pāpam idam kṛtavatī purā
13. Who are you, O beautiful one? And from where do you come, O water-dweller? For what reason did you commit this great sin (pāpa) before?
नार्युवाच ।
अप्सरास्मि महाबाहो देवारण्यविचारिणी ।
इष्टा धनपतेर्नित्यं वर्गा नाम महाबल ॥१४॥
14. nāryuvāca ,
apsarāsmi mahābāho devāraṇyavicāriṇī ,
iṣṭā dhanapaternityaṁ vargā nāma mahābala.
14. nārī uvāca apsarāḥ asmi mahābāho devāraṇyavicāriṇī
iṣṭā dhanapateḥ nityam vargā nāma mahābala
14. The woman said: "O mighty-armed one, I am an Apsarā who roams in the divine forest. O mighty one, my name is Vargā, and I am always dear to the lord of wealth (Kubera)."
मम सख्यश्चतस्रोऽन्याः सर्वाः कामगमाः शुभाः ।
ताभिः सार्धं प्रयातास्मि लोकपालनिवेशनम् ॥१५॥
15. mama sakhyaścatasro'nyāḥ sarvāḥ kāmagamāḥ śubhāḥ ,
tābhiḥ sārdhaṁ prayātāsmi lokapālaniveśanam.
15. mama sakhyaḥ catasraḥ anyāḥ sarvāḥ kāmagamāḥ śubhāḥ
tābhiḥ sārdham prayātā asmi lokapālaniveśanam
15. I have four other female companions, all auspicious and able to go anywhere at will. With them, I had gone to the dwelling of the world-guardians.
ततः पश्यामहे सर्वा ब्राह्मणं संशितव्रतम् ।
रूपवन्तमधीयानमेकमेकान्तचारिणम् ॥१६॥
16. tataḥ paśyāmahe sarvā brāhmaṇaṁ saṁśitavratam ,
rūpavantamadhīyānamekamekāntacāriṇam.
16. tataḥ paśyāmahe sarvāḥ brāhmaṇam saṃśitavratam
rūpavantam adhīyānam ekam ekāntacāriṇam
16. Then all of us observed a brahmin (brāhmaṇa) who was firm in his vows, handsome, engaged in study, and living in solitude.
तस्य वै तपसा राजंस्तद्वनं तेजसावृतम् ।
आदित्य इव तं देशं कृत्स्नं स व्यवभासयत् ॥१७॥
17. tasya vai tapasā rājaṁstadvanaṁ tejasāvṛtam ,
āditya iva taṁ deśaṁ kṛtsnaṁ sa vyavabhāsayat.
17. tasya vai tapasā rājan tadvanam tejasā āvṛtam
āditya iva tam deśam kṛtsnam sa vyavabhāsayat
17. O king, that forest was indeed enveloped in splendor (tejas) by his asceticism (tapas). He illuminated the entire region, just like the sun (āditya).
तस्य दृष्ट्वा तपस्तादृग्रूपं चाद्भुतदर्शनम् ।
अवतीर्णाः स्म तं देशं तपोविघ्नचिकीर्षया ॥१८॥
18. tasya dṛṣṭvā tapastādṛgrūpaṁ cādbhutadarśanam ,
avatīrṇāḥ sma taṁ deśaṁ tapovighnacikīrṣayā.
18. tasya dṛṣṭvā tapas tādṛk rūpam ca adbhutadarśanam
avatīrṇāḥ sma tam deśam tapovighnacikīrṣayā
18. Having seen his intense asceticism (tapas) and his marvelously beautiful form (rūpa), we descended to that region with the intention of disrupting his penance (tapas).
अहं च सौरभेयी च समीची बुद्बुदा लता ।
यौगपद्येन तं विप्रमभ्यगच्छाम भारत ॥१९॥
19. ahaṁ ca saurabheyī ca samīcī budbudā latā ,
yaugapadyena taṁ vipramabhyagacchāma bhārata.
19. aham ca saurabheyī ca samīcī budbudā latā
yaugapadyena tam vipram abhyagacchāma bhārata
19. And I, along with Saurabheyī, Samīcī, Budbudā, and Latā, approached that brahmin (vipra) at the same time, O Bhārata.
गायन्त्यो वै हसन्त्यश्च लोभयन्त्यश्च तं द्विजम् ।
स च नास्मासु कृतवान्मनो वीर कथंचन ।
नाकम्पत महातेजाः स्थितस्तपसि निर्मले ॥२०॥
20. gāyantyo vai hasantyaśca lobhayantyaśca taṁ dvijam ,
sa ca nāsmāsu kṛtavānmano vīra kathaṁcana ,
nākampata mahātejāḥ sthitastapasi nirmale.
20. gāyantyaḥ vai hasantyaḥ ca lobhayantyaḥ
ca tam dvijam | saḥ ca na asmāsu
kṛtavān manaḥ vīra kathaṃcana | na
akampata mahātejāḥ sthitaḥ tapasi nirmale
20. Singing, laughing, and enticing that Brahmin, he, O hero, never fixed his mind on us in any way. That highly effulgent one remained unshaken, established in pure austerity (tapas).
सोऽशपत्कुपितोऽस्मांस्तु ब्राह्मणः क्षत्रियर्षभ ।
ग्राहभूता जले यूयं चरिष्यध्वं शतं समाः ॥२१॥
21. so'śapatkupito'smāṁstu brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyarṣabha ,
grāhabhūtā jale yūyaṁ cariṣyadhvaṁ śataṁ samāḥ.
21. saḥ aśapat kupitaḥ asmān tu brāhmaṇaḥ kṣatriyarṣabha
| grāhabhūtāḥ jale yūyam cariṣyadhvam śatam samāḥ
21. Infuriated, that Brahmin then cursed us, O best of warriors: 'You all shall wander in the water as crocodiles for a hundred years.'
