अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
तुलाधारस्य वाक्यानि धर्मे जाजलिना सह ॥१॥

atrāpyudāharantīmamitihāsaṁ purātanam ,
tulādhārasya vākyāni dharme jājalinā saha.

1. Bhishma said: In this connection, they also relate this ancient historical account (itihāsa): the words of Tuladhara concerning natural law (dharma) in conversation with Jājali.
वने वनचरः कश्चिज्जाजलिर्नाम वै द्विजः ।
सागरोद्देशमागम्य तपस्तेपे महातपाः ॥२॥
2. vane vanacaraḥ kaścijjājalirnāma vai dvijaḥ ,
sāgaroddeśamāgamya tapastepe mahātapāḥ.

2. A certain twice-born (dvija) named Jājali, a forest dweller, approached the vicinity of the ocean and, as a great ascetic (mahā-tapas), performed severe penance (tapas).
नियतो नियताहारश्चीराजिनजटाधरः ।
मलपङ्कधरो धीमान्बहून्वर्षगणान्मुनिः ॥३॥
3. niyato niyatāhāraścīrājinajaṭādharaḥ ,
malapaṅkadharo dhīmānbahūnvarṣagaṇānmuniḥ.

3. The sage, disciplined and with controlled diet, wore bark-garments, deerskin, and matted hair. Covered in dirt and mud, the wise one (muni) lived for many years.
स कदाचिन्महातेजा जलवासो महीपते ।
चचार लोकान्विप्रर्षिः प्रेक्षमाणो मनोजवः ॥४॥
4. sa kadācinmahātejā jalavāso mahīpate ,
cacāra lokānviprarṣiḥ prekṣamāṇo manojavaḥ.
4. saḥ kadācit mahātejāḥ jalavāsaḥ mahīpate
cacāra lokān viprarṣiḥ prekṣamāṇaḥ manojavah

4. O King, that brahmin sage (viprarṣiḥ), of great splendor, residing in water and swift as thought, once wandered the worlds, observing (everything).
स चिन्तयामास मुनिर्जलमध्ये कदाचन ।
विप्रेक्ष्य सागरान्तां वै महीं सवनकाननाम् ॥५॥
5. sa cintayāmāsa munirjalamadhye kadācana ,
viprekṣya sāgarāntāṁ vai mahīṁ savanakānanām.
5. saḥ cintayāmāsa muniḥ jalamadhye kadācana
viprekṣya sāgarāntām vai mahīm savanakānanām
5. kadācana saḥ muniḥ jalamadhye sāgarāntām

5. Once, that sage, in the middle of the water, having indeed thoroughly observed the earth, which extends to the oceans and is filled with forests and groves, reflected.
न मया सदृशोऽस्तीह लोके स्थावरजङ्गमे ।
अप्सु वैहायसं गच्छेन्मया योऽन्यः सहेति वै ॥६॥
6. na mayā sadṛśo'stīha loke sthāvarajaṅgame ,
apsu vaihāyasaṁ gacchenmayā yo'nyaḥ saheti vai.
6. na mayā sadṛśaḥ asti iha loke sthāvarajaṅgame apsu
vaihāyasam gacchet mayā yaḥ anyaḥ sahet iti vai
6. iha loke sthāvarajaṅgame mayā sadṛśaḥ anyaḥ yaḥ na asti,
(saḥ) apsu vaihāyasam gacchet (vā) mayā (yad) sahet iti vai
6. Indeed, there is no other in this world, among stationary and moving beings, who is similar to me, who could go through the air while in water, or endure as I do.
स दृश्यमानो रक्षोभिर्जलमध्येऽवदत्ततः ।
अब्रुवंश्च पिशाचास्तं नैवं त्वं वक्तुमर्हसि ॥७॥
7. sa dṛśyamāno rakṣobhirjalamadhye'vadattataḥ ,
abruvaṁśca piśācāstaṁ naivaṁ tvaṁ vaktumarhasi.
7. saḥ dṛśyamānaḥ rakṣobhiḥ jalamadhye avadat tataḥ
abruvan ca piśācāḥ tam na evam tvam vaktum arhasi
7. rakṣobhiḥ jalamadhye dṛśyamānaḥ saḥ tataḥ avadat
ca piśācāḥ tam abruvan tvam evam vaktum na arhasi
7. Being seen by the Rākṣasas, he then spoke from the middle of the water. And the piśācas said to him, 'You are not fit to speak in such a way.'
तुलाधारो वणिग्धर्मा वाराणस्यां महायशाः ।
सोऽप्येवं नार्हते वक्तुं यथा त्वं द्विजसत्तम ॥८॥
8. tulādhāro vaṇigdharmā vārāṇasyāṁ mahāyaśāḥ ,
so'pyevaṁ nārhate vaktuṁ yathā tvaṁ dvijasattama.
8. tulādhāraḥ vaṇigdharma vārāṇasyām mahāyaśāḥ saḥ
api evam na arhate vaktum yathā tvam dvijasattama
8. vārāṇasyām mahāyaśāḥ vaṇigdharma tulādhāraḥ saḥ
api evam vaktum na arhate yathā tvam dvijasattama
8. Even Tulādhāra, the highly renowned merchant whose intrinsic nature (dharma) is that of a merchant, residing in Vārāṇasī, is not fit to speak in such a way as you are, O best among Brahmins.
इत्युक्तो जाजलिर्भूतैः प्रत्युवाच महातपाः ।
पश्येयं तमहं प्राज्ञं तुलाधारं यशस्विनम् ॥९॥
9. ityukto jājalirbhūtaiḥ pratyuvāca mahātapāḥ ,
paśyeyaṁ tamahaṁ prājñaṁ tulādhāraṁ yaśasvinam.
9. iti uktaḥ jājaliḥ bhūtaiḥ pratyuvāca mahātapaḥ
paśyeyam tam aham prājñam tulādhāram yaśasvinam
9. bhūtaiḥ iti uktaḥ mahātapaḥ jājaliḥ pratyuvāca
aham tam prājñam yaśasvinam tulādhāram paśyeyam
9. Thus addressed by the spirits, Jājali, who was a great ascetic (tapas), replied, 'I would like to see that wise and famous Tulādhāra.'
इति ब्रुवाणं तमृषिं रक्षांस्युद्धृत्य सागरात् ।
अब्रुवन्गच्छ पन्थानमास्थायेमं द्विजोत्तम ॥१०॥
10. iti bruvāṇaṁ tamṛṣiṁ rakṣāṁsyuddhṛtya sāgarāt ,
abruvangaccha panthānamāsthāyemaṁ dvijottama.
10. iti bruvāṇam tam ṛṣim rakṣāṃsi uddhṛtya sāgarāt
abruvan gaccha panthānam āsthāya imam dvijottama
10. iti bruvāṇam tam ṛṣim sāgarāt uddhṛtya rakṣāṃsi
abruvan dvijottama imam panthānam āsthāya gaccha
10. Having thus spoken, the Rākṣasas, lifting that sage (Jājali) out of the ocean, said, 'O best of Brahmins, take this path and go!'
इत्युक्तो जाजलिर्भूतैर्जगाम विमनास्तदा ।
वाराणस्यां तुलाधारं समासाद्याब्रवीद्वचः ॥११॥
11. ityukto jājalirbhūtairjagāma vimanāstadā ,
vārāṇasyāṁ tulādhāraṁ samāsādyābravīdvacaḥ.
11. iti uktaḥ jājaliḥ bhūtaiḥ jagāma vimanāḥ tadā
vārāṇasyām tulādhāram samāsādya abravīt vacaḥ
11. bhūtaiḥ iti uktaḥ jājaliḥ vimanāḥ tadā jagāma
vārāṇasyām tulādhāram samāsādya vacaḥ abravīt
11. Having been addressed thus by the elemental beings, Jājali, disheartened, then departed. Upon reaching Tulādhāra in Vārāṇasī, he spoke these words.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच ।
किं कृतं सुकृतं कर्म तात जाजलिना पुरा ।
येन सिद्धिं परां प्राप्तस्तन्नो व्याख्यातुमर्हसि ॥१२॥
12. yudhiṣṭhira uvāca ,
kiṁ kṛtaṁ sukṛtaṁ karma tāta jājalinā purā ,
yena siddhiṁ parāṁ prāptastanno vyākhyātumarhasi.
12. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca kim kṛtam sukṛtam karma tāta jājali-nā
purā yena siddhim parām prāptaḥ tat naḥ vyākhyātum arhasi
12. yudhiṣṭhiraḥ uvāca tāta purā jājali-nā yena parām siddhim
prāptaḥ kim sukṛtam karma kṛtam tat naḥ vyākhyātum arhasi
12. Yudhiṣṭhira said: "O father, what meritorious action (karma) was performed by Jājali in the past, by which he attained the highest spiritual perfection (siddhi)? You should explain that to us."
भीष्म उवाच ।
अतीव तपसा युक्तो घोरेण स बभूव ह ।
नद्युपस्पर्शनरतः सायं प्रातर्महातपाः ॥१३॥
13. bhīṣma uvāca ,
atīva tapasā yukto ghoreṇa sa babhūva ha ,
nadyupasparśanarataḥ sāyaṁ prātarmahātapāḥ.
13. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca atīva tapasā yuktaḥ ghoreṇa saḥ babhūva
ha nadī-upasparśana-rataḥ sāyam prātaḥ mahā-tapāḥ
13. bhīṣmaḥ uvāca saḥ atīva ghoreṇa tapasā yuktaḥ ha
babhūva sāyam prātaḥ nadī-upasparśana-rataḥ mahā-tapāḥ
13. Bhīṣma said: "Indeed, he was endowed with extremely severe asceticism (tapas). He was devoted to bathing in rivers both in the evening and in the morning, a great ascetic."
अग्नीन्परिचरन्सम्यक्स्वाध्यायपरमो द्विजः ।
वानप्रस्थविधानज्ञो जाजलिर्ज्वलितः श्रिया ॥१४॥
14. agnīnparicaransamyaksvādhyāyaparamo dvijaḥ ,
vānaprasthavidhānajño jājalirjvalitaḥ śriyā.
14. agnīn paricaran samyak svādhyāya-paramaḥ dvijaḥ
vānaprastha-vidhāna-jñaḥ jājaliḥ jvalitaḥ śriyā
14. jājaliḥ dvijaḥ agnīn samyak paricaran svādhyāya-paramaḥ
vānaprastha-vidhāna-jñaḥ śriyā jvalitaḥ
14. Jājali, a Brahmin (dvija) supremely devoted to Vedic study (svādhyāya) and properly tending the sacred fires, knowledgeable in the observances of a forest-dweller (vānaprastha) life, shone with spiritual radiance.
सत्ये तपसि तिष्ठन्स न च धर्ममवैक्षत ।
वर्षास्वाकाशशायी स हेमन्ते जलसंश्रयः ॥१५॥
15. satye tapasi tiṣṭhansa na ca dharmamavaikṣata ,
varṣāsvākāśaśāyī sa hemante jalasaṁśrayaḥ.
15. satyē tapasi tiṣṭhan saḥ na ca dharmam avaikṣata
varṣāsu ākāśaśāyī saḥ hemante jalasaṃśrayaḥ
15. Remaining steadfast in truthfulness and austerity (tapas), he did not observe the natural law (dharma). In the rainy seasons, he slept under the open sky, and in winter, he resided in water.
वातातपसहो ग्रीष्मे न च धर्ममविन्दत ।
दुःखशय्याश्च विविधा भूमौ च परिवर्तनम् ॥१६॥
16. vātātapasaho grīṣme na ca dharmamavindata ,
duḥkhaśayyāśca vividhā bhūmau ca parivartanam.
16. vātātapasahaḥ grīṣme na ca dharmam avindat
duḥkhaśayyāḥ ca vividhāḥ bhūmau ca parivartanam
16. Enduring wind and sun in summer, he still did not acknowledge the natural law (dharma). [His austerities included] various difficult sleeping arrangements and rolling on the ground.
ततः कदाचित्स मुनिर्वर्षास्वाकाशमास्थितः ।
अन्तरिक्षाज्जलं मूर्ध्ना प्रत्यगृह्णान्मुहुर्मुहुः ॥१७॥
17. tataḥ kadācitsa munirvarṣāsvākāśamāsthitaḥ ,
antarikṣājjalaṁ mūrdhnā pratyagṛhṇānmuhurmuhuḥ.
17. tataḥ kadācit saḥ muniḥ varṣāsu ākāśam āsthitaḥ
antarikṣāt jalam mūrdhnā pratyagṛhṇāt muhurmuhuḥ
17. Then, one time, that ascetic, while situated under the open sky during the rainy seasons, repeatedly received the water from the atmosphere directly on his head.
अथ तस्य जटाः क्लिन्ना बभूवुर्ग्रथिताः प्रभो ।
अरण्यगमनान्नित्यं मलिनो मलसंयुताः ॥१८॥
18. atha tasya jaṭāḥ klinnā babhūvurgrathitāḥ prabho ,
araṇyagamanānnityaṁ malino malasaṁyutāḥ.
18. atha tasya jaṭāḥ klinnāḥ babhūvuḥ grathitāḥ
prabho araṇyagamanāt nityam malinaḥ malasaṃyutāḥ
18. Then, O Lord, his matted locks became wet and tangled. Because of his constant dwelling in the forest, he was perpetually dirty, and [his matted locks were] covered with grime.
स कदाचिन्निराहारो वायुभक्षो महातपाः ।
तस्थौ काष्ठवदव्यग्रो न चचाल च कर्हिचित् ॥१९॥
19. sa kadācinnirāhāro vāyubhakṣo mahātapāḥ ,
tasthau kāṣṭhavadavyagro na cacāla ca karhicit.
19. saḥ kadācit nirāhāraḥ vāyubhakṣaḥ mahātapāḥ
tasthau kāṣṭhavat avyagraḥ na cacāla ca karhicit
19. saḥ mahātapāḥ nirāhāraḥ vāyubhakṣaḥ kadācit
kāṣṭhavat avyagraḥ tasthau ca karhicit na cacāla
19. He, a great ascetic (tapasvin) subsisting on air and abstaining from food, once remained still like a log of wood, completely undisturbed, never moving at all.
तस्य स्म स्थाणुभूतस्य निर्विचेष्टस्य भारत ।
कुलिङ्गशकुनौ राजन्नीडं शिरसि चक्रतुः ॥२०॥
20. tasya sma sthāṇubhūtasya nirviceṣṭasya bhārata ,
kuliṅgaśakunau rājannīḍaṁ śirasi cakratuḥ.
20. tasya sma sthāṇubhūtasya nirviceṣṭasya bhārata
kulingaśakunau rājan nīḍam śirasi cakratuḥ
20. bhārata rājan nirviceṣṭasya sthāṇubhūtasya
tasya śirasi kulingaśakunau nīḍam cakratuḥ sma
20. O Bhārata, O King, while he remained like a motionless tree-trunk, a pair of kulinga birds built a nest on his head.
स तौ दयावान्विप्रर्षिरुपप्रैक्षत दम्पती ।
कुर्वाणं नीडकं तत्र जटासु तृणतन्तुभिः ॥२१॥
21. sa tau dayāvānviprarṣirupapraikṣata dampatī ,
kurvāṇaṁ nīḍakaṁ tatra jaṭāsu tṛṇatantubhiḥ.
21. saḥ tau dayāvān viprarṣiḥ upapraikṣata dampatī
kurvāṇam nīḍakam tatra jaṭāsu tṛṇatantubhiḥ
21. saḥ dayāvān viprarṣiḥ tau dampatī kurvāṇam
nīḍakam tatra jaṭāsu tṛṇatantubhiḥ upapraikṣata
21. That compassionate Brahmin sage (viprarṣi) observed the pair of birds and the small nest being built there in his matted hair with strands of grass.
यदा स न चलत्येव स्थाणुभूतो महातपाः ।
ततस्तौ परिविश्वस्तौ सुखं तत्रोषतुस्तदा ॥२२॥
22. yadā sa na calatyeva sthāṇubhūto mahātapāḥ ,
tatastau pariviśvastau sukhaṁ tatroṣatustadā.
22. yadā saḥ na calati eva sthāṇubhūtaḥ mahātapāḥ
tataḥ tau pariviśvastau sukham tatra uṣatuḥ tadā
22. yadā saḥ mahātapāḥ sthāṇubhūtaḥ eva na calati,
tadā tataḥ tau pariviśvastau tatra sukham uṣatuḥ
22. When that great ascetic (tapasvin) remained utterly motionless like a tree-trunk, then those two birds, completely confident, lived there happily.
अतीतास्वथ वर्षासु शरत्काल उपस्थिते ।
प्राजापत्येन विधिना विश्वासात्काममोहितौ ॥२३॥
23. atītāsvatha varṣāsu śaratkāla upasthite ,
prājāpatyena vidhinā viśvāsātkāmamohitau.
23. atītāsu atha varṣāsu śaratkālaḥ upasthite
prājāpatyena vidhinā viśvāsāt kāmamohitau
23. atha varṣāsu atītāsu śaratkālaḥ upasthite
kāmamohitau viśvāsāt prājāpatyena vidhinā
23. Then, after the rainy seasons had passed and autumn had arrived, the two (sky-dwellers), deluded by desire (kāma) and acting out of trust, proceeded according to the divine ordinance (vidhi) of Prajāpati.
तत्रापातयतां राजञ्शिरस्यण्डानि खेचरौ ।
तान्यबुध्यत तेजस्वी स विप्रः संशितव्रतः ॥२४॥
24. tatrāpātayatāṁ rājañśirasyaṇḍāni khecarau ,
tānyabudhyata tejasvī sa vipraḥ saṁśitavrataḥ.
24. tatra āpātayatām rājan śirasi aṇḍāni khecarau
tāni abudhyata tejasvī saḥ vipraḥ saṃśitavrataḥ
24. rājan khecarau tatra śirasi aṇḍāni āpātayatām
tejasvī saḥ saṃśitavrataḥ vipraḥ tāni abudhyata
24. O King, there, the two sky-dwellers laid their eggs on his head. That luminous Brahmin (vipra), firm in his vows, perceived them.
बुद्ध्वा च स महातेजा न चचालैव जाजलिः ।
धर्मे धृतमना नित्यं नाधर्मं स त्वरोचयत् ॥२५॥
25. buddhvā ca sa mahātejā na cacālaiva jājaliḥ ,
dharme dhṛtamanā nityaṁ nādharmaṁ sa tvarocayat.
25. buddhvā ca saḥ mahātejāḥ na cacāla eva jājaliḥ
dharme dhṛtamanāḥ nityam na adharmam saḥ tu arocayat
25. ca buddhvā saḥ mahātejāḥ jājaliḥ na eva cacāla
dharme nityam dhṛtamanāḥ saḥ tu adharmam na arocayat
25. And having perceived (this), that great-spirited Jājali did not move at all. His mind ever fixed on (natural) law (dharma), he indeed did not approve of unrighteousness (adharma).
अहन्यहनि चागम्य ततस्तौ तस्य मूर्धनि ।
आश्वासितौ वै वसतः संप्रहृष्टौ तदा विभो ॥२६॥
26. ahanyahani cāgamya tatastau tasya mūrdhani ,
āśvāsitau vai vasataḥ saṁprahṛṣṭau tadā vibho.
26. ahani ahani ca āgamya tataḥ tau tasya mūrdhani
āśvāsitau vai vasataḥ samprahṛṣṭau tadā vibho
26. vibho ca ahani ahani āgamya tataḥ tau tasya
mūrdhani āśvāsitau vai samprahṛṣṭau tadā vasataḥ
26. And having come day by day to his head, O mighty one, those two, comforted and greatly delighted, indeed resided there then.
अण्डेभ्यस्त्वथ पुष्टेभ्यः प्रजायन्त शकुन्तकाः ।
व्यवर्धन्त च तत्रैव न चाकम्पत जाजलिः ॥२७॥
27. aṇḍebhyastvatha puṣṭebhyaḥ prajāyanta śakuntakāḥ ,
vyavardhanta ca tatraiva na cākampata jājaliḥ.
27. aṇḍebhyaḥ tu atha puṣṭebhyaḥ prajāyanta śakuntakāḥ
vyavardhanta ca tatra eva na ca akampata jājaliḥ
27. atha tu puṣṭebhyaḥ aṇḍebhyaḥ śakuntakāḥ prajāyanta
ca tatra eva vyavardhanta ca jājaliḥ na akampata
27. Then, from those well-nourished eggs, little birds were born. They grew right there, and Jājali remained unshaken.
स रक्षमाणस्त्वण्डानि कुलिङ्गानां यतव्रतः ।
तथैव तस्थौ धर्मात्मा निर्विचेष्टः समाहितः ॥२८॥
28. sa rakṣamāṇastvaṇḍāni kuliṅgānāṁ yatavrataḥ ,
tathaiva tasthau dharmātmā nirviceṣṭaḥ samāhitaḥ.
28. saḥ rakṣamāṇaḥ tu aṇḍāni kuliṅgānām yatavrataḥ
tathā eva tasthau dharmātmā nirviceṣṭaḥ samāhitaḥ
28. saḥ yatavrataḥ kuliṅgānām aṇḍāni rakṣamāṇaḥ
dharmātmā tathā eva nirviceṣṭaḥ samāhitaḥ tasthau
28. He, Jājali, firm in his vows (vrata), protected the sparrows' eggs. That righteous soul (dharmātman) remained still and concentrated, just as before, without any movement.
ततस्तु कालसमये बभूवुस्तेऽथ पक्षिणः ।
बुबुधे तांश्च स मुनिर्जातपक्षाञ्शकुन्तकान् ॥२९॥
29. tatastu kālasamaye babhūvuste'tha pakṣiṇaḥ ,
bubudhe tāṁśca sa munirjātapakṣāñśakuntakān.
29. tataḥ tu kālasamaye babhūvuḥ te atha pakṣiṇaḥ
bubudhe tān ca saḥ muniḥ jātapakṣān śakuntakān
29. tataḥ tu kālasamaye atha te pakṣiṇaḥ babhūvuḥ
ca saḥ muniḥ tān jātapakṣān śakuntakān bubudhe
29. Then, in due course, they became fully developed birds. That sage understood them as fledgling birds, having grown their wings.
ततः कदाचित्तांस्तत्र पश्यन्पक्षीन्यतव्रतः ।
बभूव परमप्रीतस्तदा मतिमतां वरः ॥३०॥
30. tataḥ kadācittāṁstatra paśyanpakṣīnyatavrataḥ ,
babhūva paramaprītastadā matimatāṁ varaḥ.
30. tataḥ kadācit tān tatra paśyan pakṣīn yatavrataḥ
babhūva paramaprītaḥ tadā matimatām varaḥ
30. tataḥ kadācit tatra tān pakṣīn paśyan yatavrataḥ
matimatām varaḥ tadā paramaprītaḥ babhūva
30. Then, one day, seeing those birds there, Jājali, who was firm in his vows (vrata), became extremely pleased. He was indeed the best among the wise.
तथा तानभिसंवृद्धान्दृष्ट्वा चाप्नुवतां मुदम् ।
शकुनौ निर्भयौ तत्र ऊषतुश्चात्मजैः सह ॥३१॥
31. tathā tānabhisaṁvṛddhāndṛṣṭvā cāpnuvatāṁ mudam ,
śakunau nirbhayau tatra ūṣatuścātmajaiḥ saha.
31. tathā tān abhisaṃvṛddhān dṛṣṭvā ca āpnuvatām mudam
śakunau nirbhayau tatra ūṣatuḥ ca ātmajaiḥ saha
31. tathā śakunau nirbhayau tān abhisaṃvṛddhān mudam
āpnuvatām ca dṛṣṭvā tatra ātmajaiḥ saha ca ūṣatuḥ
31. And having seen their offspring fully grown and experiencing joy, the two fearless birds lived there with their children.
जातपक्षांश्च सोऽपश्यदुड्डीनान्पुनरागतान् ।
सायं सायं द्विजान्विप्रो न चाकम्पत जाजलिः ॥३२॥
32. jātapakṣāṁśca so'paśyaduḍḍīnānpunarāgatān ,
sāyaṁ sāyaṁ dvijānvipro na cākampata jājaliḥ.
32. jātaprakṣān ca saḥ apaśyat uḍḍīnān punar āgatān
sāyam sāyam dvijān vipraḥ na ca akampata jājaliḥ
32. ca saḥ jātaprakṣān uḍḍīnān punar āgatān dvijān
sāyam sāyam apaśyat ca vipraḥ jājaliḥ na akampata
32. And he saw the birds, now winged, flying away and returning again every evening. Still, the Brahmin (vipra) Jājali did not waver.
कदाचित्पुनरभ्येत्य पुनर्गच्छन्ति संततम् ।
त्यक्ता मातृपितृभ्यां ते न चाकम्पत जाजलिः ॥३३॥
33. kadācitpunarabhyetya punargacchanti saṁtatam ,
tyaktā mātṛpitṛbhyāṁ te na cākampata jājaliḥ.
33. kadācit punar abhyetya punar gacchanti santatam
tyaktāḥ mātṛpitṛbhyām te na ca akampata jājaliḥ
33. kadācit punar abhyetya punar santatam gacchanti te mātṛpitṛbhyām tyaktāḥ api,
jājaliḥ na ca akampata
33. Sometimes, having returned, they (the birds) would continuously fly away again. Although they were abandoned by their mother and father, Jājali did not waver.
अथ ते दिवसं चारीं गत्वा सायं पुनर्नृप ।
उपावर्तन्त तत्रैव निवासार्थं शकुन्तकाः ॥३४॥
34. atha te divasaṁ cārīṁ gatvā sāyaṁ punarnṛpa ,
upāvartanta tatraiva nivāsārthaṁ śakuntakāḥ.
34. atha te divasam cārīm gatvā sāyam punar nṛpa
upāvartanta tatra eva nivāsārtham śakuntakāḥ
34. atha nṛpa,
te śakuntakāḥ divasam cārīm gatvā sāyam punar nivāsārtham tatra eva upāvartanta
34. Then, O King, after having spent the day wandering, those little birds (śakuntaka) would return again in the evening to that very place for dwelling.
कदाचिद्दिवसान्पञ्च समुत्पत्य विहंगमाः ।
षष्ठेऽहनि समाजग्मुर्न चाकम्पत जाजलिः ॥३५॥
35. kadāciddivasānpañca samutpatya vihaṁgamāḥ ,
ṣaṣṭhe'hani samājagmurna cākampata jājaliḥ.
35. kadācit divasān pañca samutpatya vihaṅgamāḥ
ṣaṣṭhe ahani samājagmuḥ na ca akampata jājaliḥ
35. kadācit vihaṅgamāḥ pañca divasān samutpatya
ṣaṣṭhe ahani samājagmuḥ ca jājaliḥ na akampata
35. Sometimes, the birds would fly away for five days and then return on the sixth day. Even then, Jājali did not waver.
क्रमेण च पुनः सर्वे दिवसानि बहून्यपि ।
नोपावर्तन्त शकुना जातप्राणाः स्म ते यदा ॥३६॥
36. krameṇa ca punaḥ sarve divasāni bahūnyapi ,
nopāvartanta śakunā jātaprāṇāḥ sma te yadā.
36. krameṇa ca punaḥ sarve divasāni bahūni api na
upāvartanta śakunāḥ jāta-prāṇāḥ sma te yadā
36. krameṇa ca punaḥ te śakunāḥ sarve api bahūni
divasāni yadā jāta-prāṇāḥ (sma) na upāvartanta
36. And then, after some time, even though many days passed, all the birds, having acquired (new) life, did not return.
कदाचिन्मासमात्रेण समुत्पत्य विहंगमाः ।
नैवागच्छंस्ततो राजन्प्रातिष्ठत स जाजलिः ॥३७॥
37. kadācinmāsamātreṇa samutpatya vihaṁgamāḥ ,
naivāgacchaṁstato rājanprātiṣṭhata sa jājaliḥ.
37. kadācit māsa-mātreṇa samutpatya vihaṅgamāḥ na
eva āgacchan tataḥ rājan prātiṣṭhata sa jājaliḥ
37. kadācit vihaṅgamāḥ māsa-mātreṇa samutpatya na
eva āgacchan tataḥ rājan saḥ jājaliḥ prātiṣṭhata
37. At one point, the birds flew away for as long as a month and did not return at all. Then, O King, Jājali himself set out.
ततस्तेषु प्रलीनेषु जाजलिर्जातविस्मयः ।
सिद्धोऽस्मीति मतिं चक्रे ततस्तं मान आविशत् ॥३८॥
38. tatasteṣu pralīneṣu jājalirjātavismayaḥ ,
siddho'smīti matiṁ cakre tatastaṁ māna āviśat.
38. tataḥ teṣu pralīneṣu jājaliḥ jāta-vismayaḥ siddhaḥ
asmi iti matim cakre tataḥ tam mānaḥ āviśat
38. tataḥ teṣu pralīneṣu jājaliḥ jāta-vismayaḥ (san)
"siddhaḥ asmi" iti matim cakre tataḥ mānaḥ tam āviśat
38. Then, with the birds having completely vanished, Jājali was filled with great wonder. He then conceived the thought, 'I am perfected!' And immediately, pride (māna) entered him.
स तथा निर्गतान्दृष्ट्वा शकुन्तान्नियतव्रतः ।
संभावितात्मा संभाव्य भृशं प्रीतस्तदाभवन् ॥३९॥
39. sa tathā nirgatāndṛṣṭvā śakuntānniyatavrataḥ ,
saṁbhāvitātmā saṁbhāvya bhṛśaṁ prītastadābhavan.
39. saḥ tathā nirgatān dṛṣṭvā śakuntān niyatavrataḥ
saṃbhāvitātmā saṃbhāvya bhṛśaṃ prītaḥ tadā abhavat
39. niyatavrataḥ saṃbhāvitātmā saḥ tathā śakuntān
nirgatān dṛṣṭvā saṃbhāvya bhṛśaṃ tadā prītaḥ abhavat
39. He, disciplined in his vows and self-esteemed, having thus seen the birds depart and having found satisfaction, then became exceedingly pleased.
स नद्यां समुपस्पृश्य तर्पयित्वा हुताशनम् ।
उदयन्तमथादित्यमभ्यगच्छन्महातपाः ॥४०॥
40. sa nadyāṁ samupaspṛśya tarpayitvā hutāśanam ,
udayantamathādityamabhyagacchanmahātapāḥ.
40. saḥ nadyām samupaspṛśya tarpayitvā hutāśanam
udayantam atha ādityam abhyagacchat mahātapaḥ
40. mahātapaḥ saḥ nadyām samupaspṛśya hutāśanam
tarpayitvā atha udayantam ādityam abhyagacchat
40. He, the great ascetic (mahātapas), having bathed in the river and having propitiated the fire, then approached the rising sun.
संभाव्य चटकान्मूर्ध्नि जाजलिर्जपतां वरः ।
आस्फोटयत्तदाकाशे धर्मः प्राप्तो मयेति वै ॥४१॥
41. saṁbhāvya caṭakānmūrdhni jājalirjapatāṁ varaḥ ,
āsphoṭayattadākāśe dharmaḥ prāpto mayeti vai.
41. saṃbhāvya caṭakān mūrdhni jājaliḥ japatām varaḥ
āsphoṭayat tadā ākāśe dharmaḥ prāptaḥ mayā iti vai
41. japatām varaḥ jājaliḥ mūrdhni caṭakān saṃbhāvya tadā
ākāśe "mayā dharmaḥ prāptaḥ vai" iti āsphoṭayat
41. Jājali, the foremost among those who chant, having revered the sparrows (that were perched) on his head, then clapped his hands in the sky, (proclaiming) 'Indeed, the natural law (dharma) has been attained by me!'
अथान्तरिक्षे वागासीत्तां स शुश्राव जाजलिः ।
धर्मेण न समस्त्वं वै तुलाधारस्य जाजले ॥४२॥
42. athāntarikṣe vāgāsīttāṁ sa śuśrāva jājaliḥ ,
dharmeṇa na samastvaṁ vai tulādhārasya jājale.
42. atha antarikṣe vāk āsīt tām saḥ śuśrāva jājaliḥ
dharmeṇa na samaḥ tvam vai tulādhārasya jājale
42. atha antarikṣe vāk āsīt.
jājaliḥ saḥ tām śuśrāva: "he jājale,
tvam dharmeṇa tulādhārasya samaḥ na vai"
42. Then a voice was in the sky. Jājali heard that (voice): 'O Jājali, you are certainly not equal to Tulādhāra in terms of natural law (dharma)!'
वाराणस्यां महाप्राज्ञस्तुलाधारः प्रतिष्ठितः ।
सोऽप्येवं नार्हते वक्तुं यथा त्वं भाषसे द्विज ॥४३॥
43. vārāṇasyāṁ mahāprājñastulādhāraḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ ,
so'pyevaṁ nārhate vaktuṁ yathā tvaṁ bhāṣase dvija.
43. vārāṇasyām mahāprājñaḥ tulādhāraḥ pratiṣṭhitaḥ saḥ
api evam na arhate vaktum yathā tvam bhāṣase dvija
43. dvija vārāṇasyām pratiṣṭhitaḥ mahāprājñaḥ tulādhāraḥ
saḥ api tvam yathā bhāṣase evam vaktum na arhate
43. O Brahmin, even the greatly wise Tuladhara, who is renowned in Varanasi, is not fit to speak in the manner you are speaking.
सोऽमर्षवशमापन्नस्तुलाधारदिदृक्षया ।
पृथिवीमचरद्राजन्यत्रसायंगृहो मुनिः ॥४४॥
44. so'marṣavaśamāpannastulādhāradidṛkṣayā ,
pṛthivīmacaradrājanyatrasāyaṁgṛho muniḥ.
44. saḥ amarṣavaśam āpannaḥ tulādhāradidṛkṣayā
pṛthivīm acarat rājan yatra sāyaṅgṛhaḥ muniḥ
44. rājan saḥ muniḥ amarṣavaśam āpannaḥ
tulādhāradidṛkṣayā yatra sāyaṅgṛhaḥ pṛthivīm acarat
44. O King, that sage, having become overwhelmed by indignation, wandered the earth with the desire to see Tuladhara, whose dwelling was wherever evening found him.
कालेन महतागच्छत्स तु वाराणसीं पुरीम् ।
विक्रीणन्तं च पण्यानि तुलाधारं ददर्श सः ॥४५॥
45. kālena mahatāgacchatsa tu vārāṇasīṁ purīm ,
vikrīṇantaṁ ca paṇyāni tulādhāraṁ dadarśa saḥ.
45. kālena mahatā āgacchat saḥ tu vārāṇasīm purīm
vikrīṇantam ca paṇyāni tulādhāram dadarśa saḥ
45. saḥ tu mahatā kālena vārāṇasīm purīm āgacchat
saḥ ca paṇyāni vikrīṇantam tulādhāram dadarśa
45. After a long time, that sage arrived at the city of Varanasi. There, he saw Tuladhara selling his merchandise.
सोऽपि दृष्ट्वैव तं विप्रमायान्तं भाण्डजीवनः ।
समुत्थाय सुसंहृष्टः स्वागतेनाभ्यपूजयत् ॥४६॥
46. so'pi dṛṣṭvaiva taṁ vipramāyāntaṁ bhāṇḍajīvanaḥ ,
samutthāya susaṁhṛṣṭaḥ svāgatenābhyapūjayat.
46. saḥ api dṛṣṭvā eva tam vipram āyāntam bhāṇḍajīvanaḥ
samutthāya susaṃhṛṣṭaḥ svāgatena abhyapūjayat
46. bhāṇḍajīvanaḥ saḥ api tam vipram āyāntam dṛṣṭvā
eva samutthāya susaṃhṛṣṭaḥ svāgatena abhyapūjayat
46. And that merchant, whose livelihood was from selling goods, immediately upon seeing the Brahmin approaching, rose up exceedingly delighted and welcomed him with honor.
तुलाधार उवाच ।
आयानेवासि विदितो मम ब्रह्मन्न संशयः ।
ब्रवीमि यत्तु वचनं तच्छृणुष्व द्विजोत्तम ॥४७॥
47. tulādhāra uvāca ,
āyānevāsi vidito mama brahmanna saṁśayaḥ ,
bravīmi yattu vacanaṁ tacchṛṇuṣva dvijottama.
47. tulādhāraḥ uvāca | ayam eva asi viditaḥ mama brahman na
saṃśayaḥ | bravīmi yat tu vacanam tat śṛṇuṣva dvijottama
47. tulādhāraḥ uvāca brahman dvijottama,
tvam mama viditaḥ eva asi,
saṃśayaḥ na tu yat vacanam bravīmi,
tat śṛṇuṣva
47. Tulādhāra said: "O Brahmin, you are indeed known to me; there is no doubt about it. Now, listen to the words that I shall speak, O best among the twice-born."
सागरानूपमाश्रित्य तपस्तप्तं त्वया महत् ।
न च धर्मस्य संज्ञां त्वं पुरा वेत्थ कथंचन ॥४८॥
48. sāgarānūpamāśritya tapastaptaṁ tvayā mahat ,
na ca dharmasya saṁjñāṁ tvaṁ purā vettha kathaṁcana.
48. sāgarānūpam āśritya tapas taptam tvayā mahat | na
ca dharmasya saṃjñām tvam purā vettha kathaṃcana
48. tvayā sāgarānūpam āśritya mahat tapas taptam ca
purā tvam dharmasya saṃjñām kathaṃcana na vettha
48. You performed great austerities (tapas) having settled in a coastal marshland. Yet, you had no comprehension whatsoever of natural law (dharma) before then.
ततः सिद्धस्य तपसा तव विप्र शकुन्तकाः ।
क्षिप्रं शिरस्यजायन्त ते च संभावितास्त्वया ॥४९॥
49. tataḥ siddhasya tapasā tava vipra śakuntakāḥ ,
kṣipraṁ śirasyajāyanta te ca saṁbhāvitāstvayā.
49. tataḥ siddhasya tapasā tava vipra śakuntakāḥ |
kṣipram śirasi ajāyanta te ca saṃbhāvitāḥ tvayā
49. tataḥ vipra,
tava siddhasya tapasā śakuntakāḥ kṣipram śirasi ajāyanta ca te tvayā saṃbhāvitāḥ
49. Then, O Brahmin, as a result of your accomplished austerities (tapas), small birds quickly appeared on your head, and you cherished them.
जातपक्षा यदा ते च गताश्चारीमितस्ततः ।
मन्यमानस्ततो धर्मं चटकप्रभवं द्विज ।
खे वाचं त्वमथाश्रौषीर्मां प्रति द्विजसत्तम ॥५०॥
50. jātapakṣā yadā te ca gatāścārīmitastataḥ ,
manyamānastato dharmaṁ caṭakaprabhavaṁ dvija ,
khe vācaṁ tvamathāśrauṣīrmāṁ prati dvijasattama.
50. jātapakṣāḥ yadā te ca gatāḥ cārīm itas
tataḥ | manyamānaḥ tataḥ dharmam
caṭaka-prabhavam dvija | khe vācam tvam
atha aśrauṣīḥ mām prati dvijasattama
50. yadā te ca jātapakṣāḥ itas tataḥ cārīm gatāḥ,
tataḥ dvija,
tvam caṭaka-prabhavam dharmam manyamānaḥ,
atha dvijasattama,
mām prati vācam khe aśrauṣīḥ
50. When they grew wings and began to fly here and there for foraging, then, O twice-born, you, considering natural law (dharma) to have originated from those sparrows, heard a voice in the sky, O best of the twice-born, which was directed towards me.
अमर्षवशमापन्नस्ततः प्राप्तो भवानिह ।
करवाणि प्रियं किं ते तद्ब्रूहि द्विजसत्तम ॥५१॥
51. amarṣavaśamāpannastataḥ prāpto bhavāniha ,
karavāṇi priyaṁ kiṁ te tadbrūhi dvijasattama.
51. amarṣa-vaśam āpannaḥ tataḥ prāptaḥ bhavān iha
karavāṇi priyam kim te tat brūhi dvija-sattama
51. bhavān tataḥ amarṣa-vaśam āpannaḥ iha prāptaḥ
te priyam kim karavāṇi tat dvija-sattama brūhi
51. Then, having fallen under the sway of indignation, you have arrived here. What agreeable thing shall I do for you? Tell me that, O best among brahmins (dvijasattama).
